Weekend Predictions: Falcons, Jackets win (Dogs? Feh)

update

Before we get to this week’s big issues — can Georgia win a game, and is Oregon being replaced on future schedules by Catawba and the flag football team from Bob’s Catfish And Such — we have this important news update:

A bear broke into a car this week in Colorado and went joy riding. According to a story broken by the BBC, because apparently there’s nothing interesting going on in England, the bear broke into the car when he saw a sandwich (maybe he just had a buzz), then knocked the gear shifter into neutral, causing the car to roll out of a driveway, down an embankment and into trees.

Impressed by the element of surprise in this attack, Mark Richt immediately signed the bear as his new offensive coordinator. (I might have made up that last part.)

This week, Georgia faces Colorado, which generally inflicts less damage than its Sprint Cup wannabe wildlife.

Good news: The Trembling Chihuahuas are undefeated this season when they don’t play SEC teams! Athletic director Greg McGarity, sensing a problem, dropped a future home-and-home series with Oregon but added games against Charleston Southern and Georgia Southern.

A move into the Sun Belt is still pending.

By the way, A.J. Green is back. I guess that’s why Georgia is favored. Sorry, been burned too much by these guys. Give me Colorado and the 4 1/2.  In fact, give me the Buffs straight up.

OK, Dogs fans. If you’ve got some time (about seven minutes), this A.J. Green highlight tape should make you feel better

Sis Boom Bah

This guard is not protecting Paul Johnson, he's protecting Tech's players from Johnson.

I'm pretty sure this guard is not protecting Paul Johnson -- he's protecting Tech's players from Johnson.

Tech at Wake: Paul Johnson said, “We need to play like our hair is on fire.” I was thinking more the backside, but hair works. The defense has allowed 12 touchdowns in the last three games and has an ACC low two interceptions. Is something wrong with Al Groh’s flamethrower? Jackets cover 9 ½.

Morehead State at G-State: The first Homecoming week included the pageantry of a golf-cart parade through the concrete campus. It was a success — none of the carts got booted. This is what I know about Morehead State: They went 2-6-1 even with Phil Simms at quarterback. Panthers by 6.

Florida at Alabama: Nick Saban denies a Wall Street Journal report that he has run off at least 12 players since 2007 and hid them as medical redshirts. “Those are medical decisions made by our medical staff,” he said. And if you need a follow-up comment from the doctors, they’ll be sitting on the 50 on Saturday. Roll Tide! Meanwhile, according to my pal Pat Dooley in Gainesville, Florida hadn’t been an underdog since 2007 (to LSU) and hadn’t been an underdog by this many points since 2003 (10 to LSU). LSU won the BCS title both years. Parade time in Baton Rouge? No. Just Tuscaloosa. Bama covers 8.

Tennessee at LSU: It’s hard not to like Derek Dooley. But when your team is going overtime to beat UAB by a field goal at home, you’ve got problems. Tigers cover 16.

East Carolina at North Carolina: A new report ties an agent with a former Tar Heels assistant coach, John Blake, who resigned three weeks ago. I would say the NCAA is about to bring down the Tar Heels, but that would suggest Butch Davis ever did much to prop them up. Still, UNC covers 13.

Dez Bryant and the Dallas Cowboys sit down to their feast, as the hungry townspeople look on, hoping for fallen scraps.

(Purchase two games and get a free a copy of, “The Dallas Cowboys’ Guide to Narcissism and Gluttony,” which includes a copy of Dez Bryant’s $54,896 dinner bill, or about $2,700 per person. Bryant will be signing books today at the Dallas food bank.)

Phoney Niners at Falcons: San Francisco just fired offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye because it’s easier blaming a 33-year NFL coach for being unable to turn Alex Smith into Johnny Unitas than it is admitting you drafted a lunkhead and might as well have thrown $49.5 million into a food processor. Meanwhile, the Falcons suddenly are everybody’s flavor of the month. Birds cover 7.

Redskins at Eagles: Michael Vick makes his first home start for Philly, and he’s opposed by the former Eagles quarterback, Donovan McNabb, who made 139 but was chased out of town because he only went 10-4 last year. Wait. Huh? I’d love to pick a Skins upset here, but the flotsam surrounding McNabb prevents me. Vick over McNabb (but take Wash and 6).

Ravens at Steelers: This is the Steelers’ final game without Ben Roethlisberger. They’re 3-0.

Your odds are 2-1 Chan? Which way are you going?

Your odds are 2-1 Chan? Which way are you going?

So much for missing his leadership. Or his arm. Or his drooling. But: Baltimore wins this in an upset (take the 1).

N.Y. Jets at Buffalo: Chan Gailey is such a nice man. I’m not sure if I have the heart to tell him that BetUS.com just e-mailed me odds on the first NFL coach to fired, and Gailey is a 2-1 favorite. Unfortunately, there are no odds on Rex Ryan to spontaneously combust. Jets win, but take the Bills and 5.

Panthers at Saints: Just in case any Falcons’ fans needed a pick-me-up: Drew Brees is wearing a knee brace this week and says he’s “sore” from a hit by John Abraham. Alas: New Orleans covers the 13 ½.

♦♦♦

Bottom Dollars

Last week: 7-4 straight up, 6-5 against the line.

Season totes: 33-10 straight up, 23-19-1 against the line

Locks: Bagels.

LogoGrass_652173aSACK SCHULTZ: Making a little comeback. Went 12-3 last week and I’m at 43-17 through four. Leaders are “JohnDaly” (that one?), “Tuckys,” “Tola” and “Terrijaca” at 52-8. They cheat. Note to all: You’re going down. Want to join the fun? Click here for details and then here to enter.

AJ Green is finally back but he doesn’t act like someone who by his actions contributed to his teams losses. I wouldn’t bet a popped kernel of popcorn on the Georgia game.

Falcons win, they’ll cover the spread but I think the 49ers will come and play tough. It won’t be an Arizona game…………..

Really, you think the Neaux Geaux Saints will cover 13.5? Shouldn’t they pull Wheeze if they get a sizeable lead.

Great news for the DAWGS! Grantham just signed Fat Bast@rd – who had a year of eligibilty – to play nose tackle. NOBODY will be able to move him off the line.

The only thing Coach Richt has to worry about is to keep the QB Mini-Me away from him so he doesn’t try to eat him into his belly. Make sure to keep Fat Bast@rd full of baby backed ribs and he’ll be OK.

Also, Damon was only in Buckhead that night to try to get Coach Richt’s mojo back. #2 took it from the Coach during his visit to a tanning spa when I was feeling really evil.

Sure hope FB helps out. Grantham hired my son Scotty as DB Coach but you can see how that’s worked out. Then again, Scotty doesn’t get it, he just doesn’t.

I’m off to Boulder to create an oxygen inversion dome to help the puppies out against the Buff’s.

I guess Saban doesn’t break rules doing this or with his practice of signing more players to scholarships than he actually has scholarships to offer, but sooner or later this has got to hurt him, and Bama. He’s a great coach, but those things just seem like he stretches the rules as far as he can.

Jeff, am I just “misremembering” (a roger Clemens verb), or didn’t Butch Davis have problems with the NCAA at Miami?

How do you divide 34 uga points by the value of a field goal(3)? We know UGA can’t find the endzone unless the game is over for the dawgs. Maybe DAWG HOUSE you should sa UGA 30. 30 is only 10 field goals for Walsh to kick.

Jeff, if you are smart you would take some of that Chan Gailey action.

anyone who thinks Buffalo will fire Gailey this season is smoking crack. He is in his first season as the teams coach – that in and of itself is an automatic bye for one season. Plus he not only had the stones to bench Trent Edwards he got the waste of a QB off the team completely.

That is the type of decisive action Bills fans have been craving after the Dick Jouran wishy-washy blah years. Gailey made his decision that Edwards was never going to get beyond his Capt. tentaive issues and then made sure there was no chance of there being any type of QB Controversy.

The players responded to the changes and played their hearts out in NE last week, almost pulling off an epic upset.

Trust me, right now Gailey will get a complete pass this season from Buffalo fans and management. The Bills very well may go 1-15, 2-14 — won’t matter — Gailey will be Bills Coach next season – GARAUNTEED!

Jeff, you have reached a new height of a–holedom. Beating up Georgia about playing lesser teams when Florida plays the “Little Sisters of the Poor”, “Littler Sisters of the Poor” and “So Poor We Ain’t got Sisters” every year and that’s O.K. Plus the Gators get an extra home game every year, “neutral field” my rear. Alabama is scheduled to play GSU, that was really a gutsy choice on Bama’s part. Granted the Dawgs are reeling this year, but give them some slack for doing the same things that other SEC teams have been doing for years.

Historically, Georgia is more prestigious than either of those teams — but not as much as Dawgs fans like to think. In all my travels, I’m not sure I’ve ever come across a fan base whose self-perception is so far from reality. Georgia fashions itself a national power in the vein of Ohio State, USC, et. al., based primarily off one glorious three-year run 30 years ago with Herschel Walker (and some kick-butt years in the 1940s).

Has CMR considered playing some of our true freshmen? First, they can’t be any worse than many of our starters, and second, to see what we have for the future. Third, if they are really good, then they will be gone after three years anyway. Alex Ogletree is head & shoulders better than Jakkar “Hit Man” (who is playing like Prince Miller). Ken Malcombe is the type of back you run up the middle, not Carlton Thomas, and what about our offensive (no pun intended) linemen? Just my opinion.

Jeff, Saban had to find a way to move out Mike Shula’s recruits (Alabama’s version of Mark RIcht), to make room for guys who could actually play football. I love that the guy who whined to the newspaper waited until he had finished with his free education before suddenly feeling persecuted.

While it is possible they may score close to 30 (mainly because AJ Green would count for most of the points), I’m downright speechless that there are a few people on this blog that think the UGA defense will only give up 10 and 12 points to Colorado. Their defense (especially that pathetic excuse of a secondary) has been almost as bad as Mike Bobo’s play calling on offense this year. I don’t think they’ll hold CU to 10 points even if the Buffs told them what play they were running and who the ball was going to. Please point me in the direction of your local crack dealer.

jumbeauxtiger ,

I think it’s entirely possbile to lose this game.

I think the first clue will be what happens on the coin toss. I know this sounds stupid but hear me out. If we win the coin toss and Richt defers to the 2nd half like he always does, I’m going to shoot the TV.

You DON”T want your opponent to gain the momentum. They are having a Blackout, they are honoring the 1990 NC team, the crowd will really get into it if they score first.

And our guys will be like “well here we go again” and all the pressure falls on us. We need to score first and take the crowd out of it.

But Richt will pull that same dumb move like he always does and defer if we win the coin toss. So either way Colorado will get the ball first.

Also they are coming off a bye week, it’s a long road trip for us. I hate to tell you, but I think Schultz may be right on this.

The Frisco beat writer says that he believes that the niners may beat the Falcons even though the OC, Raye was fired after the game last week. It is a dangerous game for the Falcons after that emotional game last week. When you really think about it, is there any better match than the Buffalo Bills and Chan Gailey? Jeff,

These Florida Gator fans are for the most part very well meaning fans, however there seems to be a ton of those Florida Trailer Trash types who want to belittle Georgia, Auburn, and Alabama fans by deeming their program has superior and they can not lose attitude. I guess they think because they have won them all except two games in the past two years that they are the most dominant team in the nation. Well even though many of our teams have fallen on hard times and some are on the rebound and others are on the downward spiral, what goes around comes around and either way, a team like Alabama, LSU or Auburn will put the Florida Trailer Trash type fans in their place.

For you UGA, LSU, AUBURN, OR ALABAMA Fans, keep it classy and when UF does take that spanking feel free to beat them down like the dog many of these homer fans are.

This is not the UF Tebow teams of the past, when it is 3rd down and 7 yards in that tough game, you do not have Tebow to run 8 yards to get it for you, just remember that.

The arrest record at UF is not much better than UGA’s and the recent failures in the Athletic Department, as well as the coaches defections is all pointing toward a future beat down.

Shultzie, Keep up with the times man! UGA has always played Georgia Southern — once about every four years. Since you haven’t been keeping up on in-state sports — Southern has been very appreciative to the Dawgs for playing them, the revenue generated by those games was a big boost to their program. On the other hand, Tech has always been too scared to play Georgia Southern (they don’t want an embarassing loss to a IAA school). It took CPJ coming to Tech to finally put Southern on the schedule. Too bad they did that — Southern will beat them. I agree it would have been fun to see Georgia play Oregon down the road — but get realistic, you have to give your team a fighting chance compared to what the other big names do with their out of conference schedules. UGA cancels one home and away series and you discredit them like that. Where was all your praise when Georgia was playing Arizona State (had tied for the PAC 10 title the year before), Big 12 competition on the rise (Oklahoma State and Colorado), Boise State (first BCS school to really give them a shot at a big name brand program during the regular season), Clemson (perennial competitor in the ACC), Central Michigan (coming off MAC Championship), Troy State (coming off Sun Belt Chanpionship) — all in addition to Georgia Tech every year, and the list could go on. Also, how convenient you left out the fact that UGA will be playing Lousiville. Louisville is no pushover and you wouldn’t want them as your homecoming opponent. Have you already been told your contract expires at the end of the year — because you write like you really don’t care how stupid it makes you look.

Yes, we would love to have Charlie Strong and Dan Mullen on the UF Staff, but they earned their way to being head coaches, and we wish them well. Every program which is successful looses assistant coaches who move on to become head coaches. It is very likely that Kirby Smart will be moving up from BAMA in the next couple of years because he is rapidly earning his chance to be a head coach. The Head Coach is only one element in a successful program, and they all earn their chance to have their own programs. The Assistant Coaches, as a whole, are more valuable.
I bet the UGA Fans would like to be in the position of UF and BAMA. Look at FSU. They have been sort of wimpy since Mark Richt took over at UGA.

9-3, maybe. 8-4, possibly. But 7-5? Take out the two joke games and that means Georgia, with 5 Top 10 recruiting classes on campus, went 5-5 against its peers. Impressive…

Ranking local teams:

Falcons: Brees is in a knee brace (but could probably make a 29 yard field goal)

Braves; Brooks Conrad joins the lore of the Cox years

Thrashers: Have a good feeling here (see below)

UGA Basketball: Fox a legacy of the good things Damon Evans did

GT Basketball: .500 season

GT Football: .500 season (whoops)

Hawks: Have a bad feeling here

UGA Football: Damon Evans didn’t hire Richt and he did schedule Oregon. McGarrity screwed up. Its College of Charleston with the good looking women, not Charleston Southern.

So far I have been 100% right on dawgs.

I pick dawgs to win this week. Colorado is no good and Green is back (I think he should be suspended by his coaches for at least one game).

I’m nervous the Falcons will come out flat after the huge win last week. This is where we find out if the Falcons are a playoff team, by beating the teams they should beat.

Jeff, anybody related to the U has some issue. Davis, Richt, etc. The U was the most arrogant, classless team ever. Most of the current NCAA rules are in place today because of the U.

I remember a U player was TV the other day remembering his good ole days. Forgot his name. He was still proud that he went to the tunnel and disappeared for a while after a touchdown. I almost puked.

Jeff,

I like UGA to cover the -4.5. I predicted that they would lose to MSU last week, but this offense is eventually going to get it in gear. Look for the running game to get back on track this week.

I like Tech straight up, but would take Wake +10.

I too like Bama to cover the -8, and I think it will be a high scoring game.

And I like LSU straight up, but Tennessee +16.5.

Alphare,

Dude the U was bada$$ back in the day! Who cares about class! Such PC garbage! Football is a violent game, and the only way to get respect is to take it!

I’m so sick of ESPN cramming Pu$$y A$$es like Tim Tebow down my throat, telling who I should admire! Talk about making me want to vomit! Give me the Canes any day of the week. They were fun and spit in the face of those NCAA douche bags with their continous success. The Canes might have been thugs but at least they were honest about it, unlike Urban Meyer who also has thugs on his team yet pretends to run a ” clean program”. What a joke!

you may admire thugs, but most people don’t.

I think Richt’s end-zone celebration at Jax is a U tradition. If I were the ref for that game, I’d zero out UGA’s score at the end of the game.

All this concern about UGA scheduling cupcakes for their ooc games. No worries, won’t be long before UGA will be the ooc cupcake all the other teams are trying to schedule. Things are looking up mutts. I hear Vandy is looking to lock you guys up as their homecoming opponent for the long term.

ever wonder what happened to michael vicks dogs?

http://www.VICKDOGMOVIE.com

you should watch this documentary movie on his dogs and what happened to some of them…its won several awards including BEST SOCIAL COMMENTARY AT THE ACTION ON FILM FESTIVAL and takes a look at the aftermath of what happened after he was busted for dog-fighting.

Rather than focusing on the dog fighting problem, the movie sheds light on solutions leading to “Vicktory” for all the underdogs in the movie – tattooed people, pitbulls, parolees and all the other people in this world that society has turned their back on through ignorance and racism.
The movie also examines the life of Brandon Bond and his struggle with balancing fame, fortune and the Rock-N-Roll tattoo lifestyle with a more fulfilling life that focuses on the betterment of both animals and society as a whole.

Its got celebrities like Debbie and Danny Trejo, Michael Berryman, Pixie Acia and Donal Logue, the movie takes you on an incredible journey you will never forget!

Proceeds for this film will be going to Villa Lobos Pitbull Rescue.

Billo WHAT is NEW? New would be UGA winning and the UGA fans not crying like lil girla. What would be new is if UGA could beat the Gators. New wouls be if the UGA fans were still in the stadium in the 4th quarter against Kentucky. New would be if a UGA mascot could live through a season. New would be if a UGA freshman girl could stay sober and out of the Free Health Clinic on campus every other day. New would be if a UGA player could gop a month without needing BAIL money. SO WHAT IS NEW?

Made some major life-changing decisions today…. I’m not going to think you sports writers at AJC know everything, which you obviously don’t, and I’m going back to church. People who read your blogs might want to consider doing the same before they get too hateful to change. If the AJC had a team name, it would be the Devils for sure.

Jeff, you are the only sportswriter in this town with any sense. The Dogs will not even come close, and I will take UC and give UGA fans 5 1/2 and still cover the spread. AJ Green is not going to make any difference, and if he does, it shows you just how much trouble this program is really in.

If you depend that much on one player, you’re team is beyond sorry, and I do believe UGA sucks beyond belief. Only GT sucks worse.

Unfortunately, this is Georgia football – – total lack of discipline, arrests, penalties, turnovers, sloppy play, bad decisions like going for it on fourth and one on your own 25 yard line in the second quarter when your down by 7 points (remember arkansas). Until someone at the top brings in a top coach, this is what it is. Any wonder why the first three DCs offered the job last year turned it down?

Just look at the difference between the Shula and Saban eras at Bama.

Jeff is a joke– He has always hated Georgia and never had anything nice to say about the red and black. He is really getting a thrill kicking us now that we are down– It is a shame because he has the tools to be a very good writter but he is so bias and hates Georgia so much that it is not in his DNA to be fair and balanced when it comes to Georgia– Jeff remember what Louis said many years ago, “you can eat our food, you can marry our women, but we are sick and tired of getting the LA slant on everything you write– Don’t forget, Delta is ready when you are.”
