Do Omar Infante and the Braves have enough healthy bodies left to win the wild card? (AP photo)
Welcome back to Turner Field for a game involving what remains of your Atlanta Braves.
To all of the injury issues the team has had in the season — not the least of which were losing Chipper Jones and pitcher Kris Medlen for the year and pitchers Jair Jurrjens and Takashi Saito for extended periods, we add this: Martin Prado is “definitely going to be out for a while” with a hip-pointer, manager Bobby Cox said after Monday’s game.
The biggest problem with that: There’s not “a while” left in the season. In fact, there are more letters in “a while” (six) than there are games left on the Braves’ schedule (five).
Prado might be toast, but the Braves aren’t, yet. They enter tonight’s game against Florida with a one-half game lead over San Diego and 4 1/2 over all-but-dead Colorado in the National League wild card race.
Prado is having an MRI and was not available for comment before the game. Cox said he was “feeling better” today. But, even though we’re talking about one of the toughest players on the team, it would be surprising to see him back in the lineup this season. A hip-pointer is an extremely painful injury, one that prevents a player from pivoting — which eliminates pretty much every movement in a baseball game (fielding, throwing, hitting).
How are the Braves still here? They’re like Monty Python’s “Black Knight,” who kept fighting on despite severed limbs. (”It’s only a flesh wound!” … I am invincible! The Black Knight always triumphs!”)
In fact, since everybody can use a laugh these days . . .
On a related note, the “Black Knight” is batting third and playing center field for the Braves tonight.
OK, seriously. The lineup includes these changes: Catcher Brian McCann is batting third to replace Prado; the struggling Melky Cabrera (hitting only .229 with one homer in his last 49 games) is hitting fifth; Brooks Conrad starts at third base and hits seventh.
Pitching tonight on only three days rest (in place of the injured Jurrjens) is Tim Hudson. He’s only 1-4 with a 6.10 earned run average in five September starts after going 6-0 with a 1.43 ERA in his previous eight outings. One positive omen: Hudson has pitched on three days rest three times before in the regular season, going 2-0 with a 2.61 ERA.
That’s it for now. I’ll be back to live blog at game time. Can the Braves hang on?

Jeff,
The Braves can hang on, and I think this move for Huddy and Lowe might push them over the edge.
Prado’s injury is really going to hurt the Braves if they can get into the playoffs.
Know what’s interesting? The poor play of September doesn’t usually result in poor play in postseason (or vice-versa = playing well does not mean a great postseason). Only one of many examples is the 2006 St. Louis Cardinals. I’ve been talking to Bradley about writing a blog, and he said he might do that. But nothing yet.

Re: Herschel Talker
Its easy to judge on the surface to judge Bobby Cox, but if there is ever a season to see his genius…his uncanny ability to manage players way beyond their normal capabilities…it is this year. This year I have more respect for him than past years…even though I am frustrated by his tactics.
Wouldn’t be surprised if Melky doesn’t get a 2-hit night tonight…

Season on line. Must win situation.
Melky hitting 5th, Conrad 7th, and Ankiel 8th. Awesome.
I guess this is why Glaus, Diaz, McLouth, and Hinkse aren’t in the lineup.
Career against Sanchez:
Glaus 0 for 5
Diaz 2 for 8
McLouth 0 for 9
Hinske 0 for 10
Interesting enough:
Cabrera 3 for 6
Ankiel 2 for 2

Hey Herschel and all the idiots that will now try and bash Bobby. What else is he supposed to do. We lost Chipper and Prado, our two best offensive players. Take the two best offensive studs off any other playoff team and lets see how good that team does. What is bobby supposed to do, hit McClouth 5th? Or maybe Ankiel? Or should Conrad be our new stud? Bobby has his arms tied, there is not much we can do but hope these mediocre players (gonzalez, ankiel, mcclouth, cabrera) step up. The braves are not going to make it out of the first round anyway, but lets hope they can make Bobby proud in these final games. Let the old man go out a winner.

Sure wish GM would start talking to the Nationals about Dunn. He is one of those Braves killers. He would be awesome with Prado, McCann, Haywood, Infante. We could then purchsaae a 12 foot boat with trolling motor and put Glause, Lee, Meldy, out fishing This would clear up problems with first base. I would get McCann to start working on first base and use Ross more as catcher.

Oh, but the Braves don’t have to talk to the Nationals. Dunn isn’t signed past this season. Unless you’re talking about trading for him, which is pointless because he can’t be on the postseason roster. We definitely need a LF that can hit next year, though, and he could be that guy, no matter what side of the plate he hits from.
Oh, and if we were going to send Lee and Glaus packing now, Freeman would be the 1B. McCann is staying behind the plate.

I think we’ve got enough young arms that we don’t have to re-invest the money that we’re spending on Wags and Saito back into the ‘pen, and I don’t really know that we need to pick up Farnsworth’s option. Add into that the money we’re not spending on Glaus and Lee, and we should have enough money left after giving the guys who are due raises to spend some significant money on a LF. It may not be quite enough to get Dunn, but we’ll see.

I would venture a bet that an FBI agent or CIA operative wouldn’t feel as much pressure as a Braves starter the next five games. Melky batting 5th, resting players in the middle of a pressurized wild card race. These guys can rest after the season. I think she’s saying if they weren’t on the verge of playing themselves out of a playoff spot after having held a significant lead the division. Given, they’ve dealt with a lot of adversity, but there’s been a lot of defensive miscues and a number of guys aren’t producing to the levels expected of them. I think a lot of people see them as a team on its last legs, not a team that’s poised to contend for the World Series, so a lot of folks aren’t that excited about them right now.

Good thing it didn’t matter, but jesse you are creating a lot more difficulty than was actually there.
I think you are confusing Mayben’s dribbler for Uggla’s 2 hopper. He was still on the dirt 4 or 5 quick steps in when he caught the ball…

91 was outstanding. Your right. Probably the best because they were so bad for so long and they turned it around so quickly (also a product of Cox when he was GM) but if you think about who was on the 91 team I would have to argue that they had more talented everyday players than we do now yet we still have great shot to get in. I have never seen a mgr take such a collection of utility players and juggle it enough everyday to make it work. It’s just unbelieveable how we have won 87 games with virtually no power.
And now, he will prove it again because Prado is done.

Are we going to get the same column from Mark Bradley about how this team can still get to the playoffs? Not with this patch job of a team and Bobby’s managing. You got a middle infielder (Conrad) playing third, a center fielder (Cabrera) who is also obese playing left, people in and out of the lineup at different spots, and no one is hitting. I just turned off the game after that infield hit mess. You got a runner on third, PLAY IN.
Thanks for all the great years Bobby. Sad to see you go out like this. Next year I would love for the Braves organization to give someone like Joe Maddon an offer he can’t refuse…and have a regular center fielder (and first baseman, third baseman, left fielder).

I don’t like the Phillies make no mistake. But he held his team together this year with a ton of injuries and no bullpen. His team doesn’t squeeze the bat so hard that they couldn’t produce more than 2 runs when it counts… Hellz yeah i would take Charlie over Lord Bobby. If you want to know why Bobby Cox will never win another playoff series, all you have to do is look at what just happened. Man on third and only one out. All you need is someone who can make contact, but Bobby lets Ankiel he with the most strikeouts on the team, instead of sending up Hinski. Of course Ankiel strikes out. Hinski saves Bobby’s behind with homerun but how often will that happen in the playoffs.
Just saying

Hinske hit .200 in July in August. That’s supposed to have him in the lineup regularly? I suppose with this weak-hitting bunch it should, but it is not a strike against Cox than Hinske has been sitting.

Hate to tell you this, but McCann’s hitting right around his career averages. Average is a little low, but the OBP is higher. OPS is about 10 points lower than average, but is higher than last year. The problem is the guy is not a cleanup hitter. He’s a number 5 or 6 guy. You put someone who can hit cleanup in front of him, and you’d have no complaints about him.

Baseball is different than other sports. the last place team has a better chance of beating a first place team in a 7 game series than in most other sport. there’s a lot more about success in the postseason than just the manager and the players; a lot of it has to do with momentum and luck. the mark of a good manager is all time wins and winning percentage, and Bobby doesn’t trail many in those categories

Brian only has 5 all-star games in his first 5 yrs, 3 silver slugger awards to go with a 290 career batting average. Yea, hes barely above average. Oh yeah, who was the all-star game MVP this yr? Thats right, Brian Mccann. Why dont you learn some baseball knowledge Pete and try supporting our atlanta braves instead of being negative and talking nonsense.
