Poll time: Who deserves most blame for Georgia’s offense?

Mark Richt, Aaron Murray and Mike Bobo are wondering what happened to the offense.

Mark Richt, Aaron Murray and Mike Bobo are wondering what happened to the offense.

Before getting to the point of this blog, let me quickly weigh in on Georgia coach Mark Richt’s decision to kick Demetre Baker off the team for a DUI and underage drinking: kudos.

This isn’t to celebrate a foolish youth’s mistakes. Baker isn’t the first college kid to be involved in underage drinking and driving. But Richt’s only hope of getting through to players in his program — which has seen 10 arrests since the spring — may be a zero tolerance stance because clearly nothing else has been working.

Who deserves the blame for Georgia's offensive problems?

View Results

Loading ... Loading ...

Baker will be fine. Public humiliation is a shock to the system but it can be good for one’s personal growth.

Now, about the Georgia offense: No kudos.

The Bulldogs were held to two field goals at South Carolina, smothered for a good part of the Arkansas game and were limited to two field goals Saturday at Mississippi State until a meaningless touchdown with 1:27 left  in the game.

Pass protection has been erratic and run blocking has been poor, surprising given that the offensive line was supposed to be the strength of the team. Quarterback Aaron Murray has made typical freshman mistakes but for the most part he has been impressive. The running game has been disappointing and Kris Durham has been the lone receiver to make big plays in the absence of the suspended A.J. Green (who returns this week).

So who should take the most blame for this? Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo has been the most criticized. He deserves some credit for falling on the sword in Starkville, saying: “You can’t turn the ball over, and you can’t have penalties. That’s coaching. It’s our fault.”

But by now, you should know where I stand on this: Issues always start at the top. To me, the problem is less play-calling (albeit, that’s some of it) than it is attitude and intelligence. That’s on the head coach.

Whom do you blame for the struggles? Here are some options:

♦ Richt: The Dogs did not look prepared to play Saturday in Starkville, nor have they looked well prepared in the past several SEC games (2-7 going back to last year). They often don’t play with a sense of urgency. They’re not committing as many personal foul penalties in the past but we still see too many mental breakdowns and times when they get beat physically. The head coach sets the tone.

♦ Bobo:  He has been criticized for not using more high-percentage short passes in the game plan, and for a lack of creativity in the game plan. But as we’ve  previously discussed in this corner,  Xs and Os don’t work if a team isn’t knocking over the opponent.

♦ Stacy Searels: Either Georgia’s linemen have been way overrated or the offensive line coach isn’t coaching them up. Searels is in his fourth season in Athens. He was highly regarded when he arrived from LSU in 2007 and was believed to have been given a raise to not go to Auburn with new head coach Gene Chizik last year.

I’ll throw two other choices into the poll: All of the above and none of the above (which is a vote to blame the players).

So who takes the hit for this?

LogoGrass_652173aSACK SCHULTZ: Dude, this contest is like totally ruining my street cred. Went 10-5 last week. At 31-14 overall. Two guys named Ills (Georgia) and Axmann (Wisconsin) lead at 39-6. I’m pretty sure they’re cheating. If you haven’t played, it’s not too late too humiliate me! Click here for details and then here to enter.

Who deserves most blame for the lousy, non-existent, over-rated, and over-hyped offense? Why, that would be the lousy, non-existent, over-rated, and over-hyped HC, named Richt.( 2.5 million per year) Now that’s what I called a wise use of money, from Richt’s point of view, that is.

Jeff,

As I posted on Tony’s page, we need to go back to what actually worked — Richt calling plays and Bobo coaching QBs…The delegation experiment that began with the Sugar Bowl vs. Hawaii (if memory serves correct) needs to be rexamined quickly!

UGA's three backs

Right now, UGA is the weakest SEC team at the running back position. That kid Thomas is too small and should never have been recruited. He is fast but they do not use him in plays that his speed will pay dividends on. Duh. Run him up the middle??? all 5′5″ and 165 lbs of him. Duh.

King and ealey are just not very good at all. Ealey is actually a liability and you will see him fumble over and over on the goal line. The GT game last year was a false echo. You all thought that the UGA running game had arrived in Grant Field just in time. I knew then that it was GT’s weak, weak, weak D line that allowed these two clowns to move the chains.

UGA has failed in recruiting at this position ( r back) and in the quality O line players. Same is true on the D line. This can be repaired but it will not happen until Murray is a senior. Too bad that we will waste his talent.

UGA has been set back for three years because Mark Richt and his staff have FAILED In recruiting. The high rankings in recruiting are there ONLY because of the AJ Greens and the A Murrays and the O Charles and the B Smiths ……………NOT BECAUSE of good linemen and running backs. See Alabama.

Go Dogs.

When you get two georgia “good ole boys” like Bobo and Searles, you end up with a Heisman candidate Qb (who went to high school down the street) at Auburn, and an offensive lline that’s missing the likes of James Carpenter, Chance Warmack (two georgia kids who make up the left side of Alabama’s offensive line) and a future Tennesee All- America right tackle in Jujuan James, from N. Gwinnett High for gosh sakes. You’re simply not going to get a fair and impartial evaluation of these type of players from coaches like Searles and Bobo, especially Bobo and Cam Newton. Bobo should be fired for that alone.

Seriously….the poll has the players playing better at the bottom. Was it the coaches who fumbled inside the 5 (how many times)…is it the coaches who can’t block….is it the coaches who get sacked…?

Give it time…we have a freshman qb and a new defensive scheme. Quit bashing the coaches. I agree, the coaches are at the top and are to get their players ready…but the players have to execute–end of story.

Well as many has said already it starts from the top. My opinion and im no coach but UGA has been known for yrs as a power (in ur face) type of team. The main prob now is we lack power!!! Our O-line is weak and our backs are nothing special, no speed, no tackle breaking abilities and no power. Ingredients for power football, which we lack!! So with this being said you need to try something new to make what u have work. This is the challenge for the coaches. Try to find a way to makem them look good. They obviously have looked good at some point or they wouldnt be there to begin with. Murray is doing ok, i guess. Defense needs to focus on pass proection!!!! DUH!! We aint bad on the run,not great either. I think our defense has for the most part kept us in the games but no scoring is the biggest issue. Try options or tosses or something different, please. Coach Richt, the SEC has us figured out!!

I wouldn’t even give Bobo the option of going to the press box. His dumb a** would be packing. Part of the problem though. If I am the HC and I think our O would be better off in the press box that is where he would be if things weren’t working. As CMR said after the game, we were calling running plays blindly- cause Bobo had not a clue what to call.

I have read all the blogs about it ain’t Richt it ain’t Bobo get real…Keep Murray in for 2 downs, run 1 down and bring in WR Gray for short range throw the ball more to Durham and not to the other 9 receivers on the team, next quit running the ball from the 20 yard line and under. 4 and out kick field goal

The Reaction from UGA Commitments…

——————————————————————————–

I checked in with a number of the Georgia commitments for you guys to see what they had to say about their commitment. I asked them all the same question – What does UGA’s slow start mean to you and does it affect you at all?

Here is what they said…

Chris Mayes: “The slow start does not affect me at all.”

David Andrews: “UGA is young at key positions and their defense is learning a new system on the fly. I’m a Georgia boy and will always be a Dawg because it’s the red and black no matter what.”

Amalo Herrera: “I think it is just that a lot of players are out and that they are learning a new defense. My feelings for UGA haven’t changed.”

Hunter Long: “I think they are just going through a rough patch and I think they still have a chance to be good this year when they get stuff worked out. What they are doing now has no effect on my choice. I am still solid to UGA.”

Nathan Theus: “It is unexpected. I still feel that the Lord has led me to Georgia for a reason. Things can always change, but I am not about winning and losing. If things were to change, I know I have to keep my opportunities open and keep evaluating. I’m going to keep Christ first and I know I will end up in the right place.”

Sterling Bailey: “It hurts, but I know this year is a rebuilding year and I have faith that by the end of the season, it will be different. Next year we will be ready and more determined than ever. Their losing does not change my decision at all. I am going to stand on my choice no matter what. Go Dawgs!”

Christian LeMay: “It has no affect on me at all. My commitment remains the same. I believe in the coaching staff at UGA.”

Watts Dantzler: “I’m UGA.”

Nick Marshall: “It doesn’t bother me and I am still a solid commitment.”

Justin Scott-Wesley: “The wins and losses do not mean much to me. I’m more concerned with how the team plays and how the coaches coach. I’m still committed, but I am looking at other schools just in case their is a major coaching change in Athens. I am looking at Clemson, Louisville, and Wake Forest mainly right now.”

Chris Conley: “It doesn’t affect me. I can see their potential and that excites me. I can see myself contributing to their game plan and developing into a play-maker. I am not wavering.”

Devin Bowman: “Georgia is doing okay this year. They have a good quarterback that I think will lead Georgia to some SEC championships before he leaves. I think when A.J. Green comes back, things will change for Georgia. I am still committed and I plan to be there in the spring, but I may visit South Carolina. I have decided if I will take an official visit there yet or not.”

Zach DeBell: “My commitment to Coach Mark Richt and his staff is not based on Georgia’s win-loss record. I believe they will turn this around.”

BromoDawg, that worked before the new, “Super Coaches” in the SEC. Richt would be just as inept as Bobo at gameplanning for a conference game.

Kiffin said, “Georgia is the easiest team on our schedule to prepare for. They are running the same stuff they have run for 10 years.” That was BEFORE a mediocre UT held Bobo/Richt to (THREE) points.

I agree it would help, at least temporarily, but Richt needs new blood at OC. Someone who can add in some spread offense, and someone who can utilize our tight ends. Dammit, we have 3 of the best tight ends in the country, and the’ve caught, what, 5 passes in 4 games?

How can you expect a group of separate individuals who don’t have the discipline to follow the coaches’ instructions as to off-the-field basic behavior to have the discipline to follow the proper blocking assignments, hit the correct hole, etc.? This group of individuals lacks one thing: discipline. Before he kicked that kid off the assemblage of individuals, Coach Richt should have locked him in the locker room for a half hour or so with the other individuals. Maybe that would be a start toward developing… a team.

Mistake #1 = Making your friend DC when VanGorder left.
Mistake #2 = Keeping your friend 2 years too long at DC
Mistake #3 = Redshirting Moreno
Mistake #4 = No one ready to fill in for Moreno when he left early
Mistake #5 = No one ready to fill in for Stafford when he left early
Mistake #6 = Not playing Murray or Metzenburger last year (I know Murray was hurt but not the entire year, if Murray continues to progress then he will leave early)
Mistake #7 = Making Bobo the OC, he wasn’t and isn’t ready. Probably will be one day but still too young.
Mistake #8 = Not injecting new blood in the recruiting process. Gardner is getting old, Grantham is pro coach who proablay loathes recruiting, Lakatos is from the North (No Connections), that leaves Bobo as our best recruiter besides Gardner.
Richt can pull this out but needs to face his mistakes and correct them immediately.

Doing things that noone would expect. Not the ol “wilddog” either, thats never worked. Look at that play Miss St did Sat when they converted. “Blame” is just the lazy way of dodgin an actual explaining of something and you don’t know the answer to. At fault is the inability to run block. Period. Everything else is just white noise. No, thats not the only problem but its the only one that matters. None of the other stuff matters IF the line was creating the holes we need to have even an average running game. Nobody would care about the play calling, nobody would care who was animated on the sideline, nobody would care that we have an imature team. Nobody would care because we would be 3-1 if not 4-0. Can’t run. Simple as that. Way too many factors as to why we can’t run the ball to pin the “blame” on one thing or one person.

“Responsibility” goes without saying and nobody needs to point out that coaches are responsible for the performance of thier team.

WonderDawg – nope. I just remember that Richt at UGA was not Richt at FSU. I think that a lot of people who kill Bobo are listening to the commentators too much and not watching the game critically. The people saying that he only wants to go downfield all the time are wrong. Most of the pass plays have routes at 2-3 levels. You can’t expect the primary receiver to be open at the right time, every time…that’s called football. The problem is the O-line, plain and simple…and it has been for a long, long time.

I’ve heard that the strength and conditioning program is weak also. I don’t know about that, but I’ve played plenty of offensive line and it’s easy to see when the guys can’t open holes. If we could run block, no one would be bitching about Bobo calling a run play. What do you people want? Line up and throw it every down? You’ve got to be able to run the ball consistently to win. We can’t run the ball and we have the personell to be able to do it. Seems like Searels isn’t really the best offensive line coach in the SEC. He’s had 3 years to live up to the hype and hasn’t done it.

Maybe swimming with the kids in the summer is not what they need, coach…I think when CMR stepped away from the play calling he also stepped away from the emotional involvement he needs to have with the team…he really does look way too removed on the sideline. It all starts with and ends with CMR.

I have believed for two years that he has over stayed his welcome. A once proud program has been turned into the second coming of FSU. Except he can’t win a NC with his recruits. Regardless, his style of coaching never seems to reflect intensity, passion or urgency. I truely believe he is most interested in missioning inner city youths than coaching a Div 1A program. Until we hire a coach (and staff) that is more interested in building a winner instead of sacrificing the team for friends, we are doomed to become the new whipping child of the SEC.

And it hurts like hell already…

As a Georgia fan for the past 72 years, I sense that most Georgia football players are inferior in athleticism to those at other schools. You can’t teach a running back to fake a defensive man out of position while running in stride. That tallent is inbred. A defensive lineman learns to get around his offensive opponent before he gets to college. An offensive lineman knows how to anticipate his defensive opponent’s moves to get around him . Defensive linemen know how to tackle and running backs learm how to block before they get to college. Most of Georgia’s footballl players have not reduced these basics to instinct. I bellieve Georgia has recruited a bunch of players who are having to be taught the basics and the coaches don’t have the time to do this and prepare them for the real game. CMR is not going to admit this because these are the players he recruited plus it would totally demoralize the entire team. Georgia fans need to resign to accepting this team as not a choice group of athletes and maybe the recruiting team will luck up on a better bunch in years to come. P.S. to the recruiting staff: The better running backs are those over 6′2″ and weigh move than 225 pounds.

I am a long time UGA man. UGA class of 71 & 73. Wife and family are too.

This year is bad, but just take a look: In the SC game ealey fumbles on the 3, Kris Durham has to slow down on a bomb that he caught but was tackled out on the 25 or so and we ended up with a FG. Orson Charles at the goal had one Murray pass go just behind him ( catchable ball ) and that was a TD blown. Also, earlier in the game we had the left side line fly route just 4 ” beyond the receiver’s finger tips and one more Murray under thrown ball that would have been a TD. Woulda, coulda, I know. We did not make the plays and it wore us down on a very hot day.

The same thing happened in the Arkansas game AND we allowed a bad punt snap to be picked up by them and run out for the first down and that led to a TD on one of their next 3 or 4 plays. We could have easily, easily dropped the punter back on their 18 and maybe scored. We won the SEC vs Arkansas by BLOCKING A PUNT in almost the same spot. Did ealey not fumble again??

Now, vs MSU that clown ealey fumbles yet again on the 3 yd line. Had we scored there that game would have been far different and the D would have had some more gas. Woulda coulda, I know.

See? If we had just made these plays we would be undefeated. I know now that we are lousy but negativity picks up steam rollng down hill.

This can all be cure with a new staff with focus on line men and line men and running backs and yes, some more running backs. Two years more with a new staff and the giggling stops.

Go Dogs.
