The Falcons' sideline erupts after Matt Bryant's 46-yard field goal clinches a win over New Orleans.
NEW ORLEANS – The calendar screams that it’s too early for grand proclamations. Week three games in the NFL don’t decide division titles or playoff berths. They merely give us some sense of direction.
But we just learned something about the Falcons.
They won a game against the defending Super Bowl champions. They won a game on the road and in the Superdome, where they hadn’t won since 2002. They had a 19-play touchdown drive that tested their resilience. They had a field goal drive in overtime when the offensive line assumed control of the game.
More? They had a kicker, Matt Bryant, who had to try three times for a winning field goal because his first two attempts were negated by penalties. They had a defensive end, John Abraham, who came back into the game late despite being relatively blinded in one eye.
Is that a strong enough indication of direction?
The Falcons defeated the New Orleans Saints in overtime Sunday, 27-24. Had they lost, they still would have been publicly embraced for their performance. Instead, they won, and their stature grew.
“No moral victories. No more of those for us. We’re done with that,” Roddy White said.
“We could have easily flinched or been talking about what-ifs,” linebacker Mike Peterson said.
There were enough of those last season. The Falcons fell short too many times in a season that had high expectations. They lost two close games to the Saints, and in overtime to New York, and were body slammed in Dallas.
On Sunday, we saw the team we expected last year. It felt more like 2008. So it wasn’t surprising when owner Arthur Blank was asked if he remembered the last Falcons’ victory of such significance and he responded: “When we beat the Vikings two years ago to go to the playoffs.”
The Falcons were only average in their opening loss at Pittsburgh. They were far better last week, blowing out Arizona. But New Orleans was a bigger test on a bigger stage. They responded. They looked committed.
Start with Abraham. With the Falcons leading 24-21 and the Saints driving in the final three minutes, the defensive end was poked in the right eye, suffering a scratched pupil. He suffered from double-vision. But he came out for only a few plays.
“They were like, ‘Are you done?’” Abraham said. “But you can’t come out of a game like this. I had one good eye. All I had to do was get around the end.”
This is how you tell something about a football team. The Falcons trailed 7-0 after only three minutes. But the defense intercepted Drew Brees twice in the first half, and the second one turned into that 19-play touchdown drive (including two fourth-down conversions) that tied the game at 14-14.
Trailing again at 21-17, Matt Ryan hit White for a 22-yard score. Then the Saints tied it. They looked like they would win it, only to have kicker Garrett Hartley miss a 29-yard field goal try.
The Falcons had one more chance to will themselves to a victory, and they did. They ran the ball eight straight plays from their own 41 with Michael Turner and Jason Snelling, setting up Bryant for a 41-yard attempt.
His first attempt was blocked. But the Saints had just called timeout. His second attempt was good. But the Falcons were flagged for false start. His third attempt was perfect.
The Falcons celebrated but tried to keep the party in check. It was just one win in the third week of a long season. As Peterson said, “There’s no reason to start printing T-shirts and organizing a parade.”
But if this season turns into something special, remember when they started building the floats.

The Falcons are well coached and are very mature in their attitudes towards finishing the game. They look like a team (New England comes to mind) that has a very business-like attitude and that knows that this game was a small piece of the puzzle in a long and enduring season. Again Jeff, another fine article from someone who knows how to preach it!

The offense is finally coming around and the defense still needs improvement. We have to stop the big play ability of teams…especially the Saints. We did not do that today. Good win and let’s stay discipline in our defensive assignments. Who Dat? Dem Falcons beat dem Saints!!!

Absolutely HUGE win today. A big day for Turner, of course, but can’t help but think that Snelling might have helped the Birds put it away sooner. Great to see them finally go to Gonzalez more on 3rd down as well. If Ryan had another deep threat, this team just might be unstoppable…

All in all a very good game today. We did what we needed to do to win. We limited the big plays (you won’t stop all of them from the Saints), we kept Bree’s off the field, and we took care of the football. Glad to see another Falcons-Saints game go down to the wire. Undoubtedly one of the best rivalries in the NFL. Now we are even with the Saints in the Superdome! 45-37 Falcons all time.

While Brees was clutch late, he made early mistakes that came back to haunt his team, throwing an interception on a flea-flicker and another when he tried to underhand a pass, Brett Favre-style, to Graham as he was falling forward. Brent Grimes made Atlanta’s first interception and DeCoud the second. Brees also sacked by John Abraham and Jonathan Babineaux.
Ryan, by contrast, minimized mistakes, going 19 of 30 with no interceptions and taking only one sack by Will Smith.

The media is not big on anything from Georgia so don’t worry about the lack of respect. We just have to earn ours on the field. If anyone looks at the complete embarassment this franchise was a little over 2 years ago they have to be blind not to see how far it has come. This was a good win. I wouldn’t say its a turn the corner win or a dynasty catalyst but it did turn some heads. Good Job Birds.

Lets face it, since Mike Vick, Atlanta has not gotten any love from any of the “Networks”. About the only time you hear them talk about Atlanta is when they start talking about Vick. That story is over. He admitted to not trying while he was here, and the Falcons are much better off without him. Don’t they realize that he plays for Philly now? The best thing we can do is ignore them. Now and in the future. For after all they are all bandwagon jumpers and we don’t need them!

The O-Line is All-Pro. Matty Ice is super cool again… unfazed and machine-like. Jason Snelling will prolong Turner’s awesome abilities by several years… what a beast; Snelling deserves a raise. Van Gorders D plays mean and fast… and they get off the field, and sometimes stay off for 10+ minutes of clock thanks to the punishing grind of the offense. It’s all so textbook. So professional. So simple. So perfect.
Thank you, Mr. Blank. Thank you for all of the competence you have bestowed upon the Falcons. The GM, the coaches, the players. You learn quickly, sir, and you truly care. We are grateful.

You know Matty ice isn’t content with missing on those deep balls to Harry two weeks in a row so look for the to fix that. We knew Brees was gonna get his yards it was just a matter of if we can get turnovers and we did just that. Since the bags went away, the Saints have fielded a decent team each year; each year their downfall is mid to late season collapse.
Last year, they did not collapse. This year, the Falcons have precipitated their collapse. Let’s all hope they are still in it in December so we can officially eliminate them.

All due respect and congratulations to Mike Vick, but I’d rather talk about the guy that led us to victory vs. the defending Super Bowl champions today; Matt Ryan is establishing himself, ladies and gentlemen. It’s time to start recognizing that.
Gotta love Matty Ice and the way he played today, without question; he controlled the game, controlled the team, and apparently lit a fire under some tail feathers before that last drive in a manner that I don’t think even he would’ve expected before the game. I’m not going to talk about 13-15 wins, but I WILL say this; Atlanta’s the best team in this division, and we’ll be a factor in January.

How about Matt Ryan in the 4th Qtr? His fire & passion during the late time out when he took control, pushed asst. coaches out of the way, willing the whole offense to the sidelline where it looked like he said: “No mistakes! Play smart! Now let’s go kick their a$$!”

Who Dat Brees? It’s the Falcons, that who dat is. Time to change your chant aints fans. Ya’ll stole it from the Bengals anyway.
Truth – time and time again you make posts that you obviously have no knowledge what you’re talking about…case in point, the excerpt above. New Orleans fans have been using the Who Dat chant as far back as I can remember which is somewhere in the early ’70s. It was the Bengals who began copying the Saints by starting a “Who Dey” chant.
You recently posted that Michael Vick hasn’t played “anybody” yet and alluded to the fact that he wouldn’t perform well against a “good” team. How short is your memory? He nearly led his team to victory after entering the game for an injured Kevin Kolb against Green Bay. I would say that GB is an upper echelon team.
So if you want to continue blogging and spitting off at the mouth with untrue statements then why not consider changing your name from Truth to False!!

Garrard, who was benched last week after throwing four interceptions against the Chargers, was even worse against Philadelphia. Yes, worse. Although Garrard threw just one interception, he tossed up at least four more balls that could have been picked.
Garrard finished 13 of 30 for 105 yards and was sacked six times. Defensive ends Brandon Graham and Trent Cole abused Jaguars offensive tackles Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton early and often, getting the kind of steady pressure that gives Garrard trouble.
Garrard finished with a passer rating of 39.

By the way, we Vick fans have hated that egghead Dilfer since the day ESPN got him. He and Tim Hasselbeck both sure are awful confident about their talent evaluating abilities, considering their very subpar careers.
TV sports journalists in general form their narratives in their mind and then try to fit the facts into their narrative, rather than letting the facts determine the narrative. This is the central, overriding problem with sports journalism. If they would just report what happens, I think we’d all be a lot happier.

How did Michael Vick “steal Atlanta’s spotlight,” Marshall? I’m not sure I understand that one.
He played a very good game against a team that won’t be in the playoffs. Matt Ryan played a very good game on the road against the New Orleans Saints. I’d say that’s pretty much an advantage: Falcons scenario, wouldn’t you?
I wish Vick all the best and hope he finds true redemption in Philly, and that’s coming from someone that pretty much hates all things Philadelphia except for cheese steak, Rocky, and Always Sunny. But saying that he “stole the spotlight” by beating the Jacksonville Jaguars is a little much, don’t you think?

Good to see you poop. I agree with you, the Saints did let them back in the game in overtime however the Falcons let them back in with that stupid (non) hot call when the punt hit Decouds foot and Breezy let them back in with that shuffle pass to a red shirt and Ryan with that pass where he forgot Douglas was playing for Jenkins (shorter and slower) and timed the pass wrong for a touchdown…. That’s part of what makes football football. Great game, both teams. Enjoy your posts though, you actually think before you speak, unlike others on these blogs.

Well, I won’t disagree with that, Marshall. The Vick story IS a better story. He’s coming back from a lot of poor decisions that he’d made in his first run as a franchise player, and deserves every amount of adulation he can receive so long as he stays on the right path. I hope he does well in his run with Philly or wherever else his roads lead.
That said, I don’t miss the guy. I wish him well, but Matt Ryan’s our guy now, and he’s done a good job this season in proving himself to be a franchise quarterback in his own right.

It’s hard for a lot of people (in Atlanta especially) to understand how the Vick story could be more intriguing than the Falcons over the Saints. You guys didn’t have a problem when he was the lead story when he was running circles around the league as a Falcon. The guy is an extraordinary talent and that’s what interests viewers as far as TV/Media is concerned. And, the fact that he is doing it after hitting rock bottom makes it all the more intriguing no matter what team he is playing against.

Just think about where our franchise was three years ago, with Bobby Petrino and Mike Vick dominating the headlines here in Atlanta. Ryan was our first pick in the draft that offseason, and we brought in a relatively unknown head coach candidate in Mike Smith, and since then we’ve made the playoffs and gone 9-7 in the two full seasons. Today, we’re 2-1 after beating the Saints on the road, and our only loss was a road loss that we could’ve won against a team that’s gone undefeated thus far in 2010.
Three years ago, we thought our franchise was set back another five seasons from the embarrassments that both Vick and Petrino had given us. Falcons fans — and Falcons haters — need to remember and recognize that tonight. We were going NOWHERE. Now there’s a real spark in the city with this franchise, and Ryan and Coach Smith have been a big part of all that.

Atlanta fans aren’t going to give the guy credit because his actions essentially left this franchise and this city in the cold, Marshall; who goes from being the face of professional football to doing some of the stuff he was doing behind the scenes? I’m not trying to slam him by saying that, because the past is the past and — you’re right — he has apparently turned things around, but there’s a reason the Atlanta fanbase doesn’t like the guy, and it has nothing to do with anything other than the fact that he played a major part in destroying that which he’d helped build.
Mike Vick is an extraordinary talent; in truth, there’s never been another quarterback like him, with the possible exception of Randall Cunningham in his early days, when it comes to a combination of his legs plus his arm. But he did it to himself with Falcons fans, and you can’t blame the majority of us for turning our back on him after all that we’d trusted him with.

If not for that fluky punt recovery that bounced off DeCoud (and should have been a penalty on New Orleans for kick-catch interference in the first place) the Saints aren’t even in the game. you can make the argument that a couple of Falcon play calls kept the Saints (in) the game before overtime was needed.

I’m not sure I’d want Mike Vick in that situation, truth be told. We’ve seen his decision making processes in the past, and they weren’t always the best ones when he was under pressure. Green Bay at Lambeau aside in the playoffs a few years ago, he wasn’t always someone I wanted in those situations because, despite the dangers of his legs at the time, he would make terrible decisions throwing the football/protecting it.
So far, through 10 quarters, he’s done well in the passing department since returning to being a starter, but I’m still not going to deem him the saviour of the Eagles after playing the likes of the Lions and Jaguars.

Eagles2010,
Matt got to the playoff’s in his first season and Vick didn’t do that. Vick also wasn’t consistent enough to win two seasons in a row. Matt Ryan has NEVER HAD A LOSING SEASON. I’ll take that over a loss in the NFC game given it’s only Matt’s 3rd year.

Matt Ryan took them to the playoffs his rookie season — and was a key reason that they went that far, and it was the YEAR AFTER Vick’s mess [along with Bobby Petrino] — and they lost to the eventual NFC champion Cardinals by six points.
That’s just as impressive as anything Mike Vick has ever done, man.

1. I saw Matt Ryan attempt a pass downfield. That was almost scary because it was the very bomb pass attempt that I’ve seen. (He might have tried one last week, but I was on vacation in the Bahamas. And it WAS the Cardinals, right?) But this was the first pass that I saw.
2. I saw Mike Smith go for it… twice… on 4th and short. Those plays changed the entire complexion of the game, IMO. The offense fed off that.
3. I saw a team with absolutely NO ANSWER for Tony Gonzalez. We all knew where the passes were going to go, but they STILL couldn’t do anything about it. That was quite amazing, as well.
4. I saw Matt Ryan tearing INTO some player that must have missed an assignment or something. That showed me that he was really vocal in his leadership. He even had a swagger. And those scrambles really showed some guts.
5. I saw Drew Brees making terrible decisions. That’s not something you see everyday. And I have always liked Brent Grimes. He’s small, but he’s tough.
I think that this game could be a signature game for the season. I just hope that the Falcons see this as a good win, but a win of only one game; because we were a chip shot away from losing that game.

I’m amused by the Saints fans who are saying “they let us back in the game”… they are conveniently ignoring the number of times the Falcons “let them back in the game”. Every great game has missed opportunities and requires execution. I was just as annoyed when we failed to get a touchdown after getting the ball on the 2 yard line (much easier in my opinion than hitting a 29 yard field goal), but we didn’t execute… if we’d lost because of it, that doesn’t mean the Saints wouldn’t have earned a victory.
And to the inevitable Mike Vick morons who will be showing up on these blogs until he retires or gets indicted for another crime – Mike Vick is doing exactly what he did in Atlanta. He’s carving up horrible defenses who aren’t ready for him (Detroit? JAX? really??), and he’s going to start getting drilled when he plays good teams and competent defenses start planning for him. Just give it a few weeks. He’s an exciting player, but he’s far from a great QB.
But if we decide one day that we really did want a felon on our team who kills defenseless animals and can’t lead a team, we’ll definitely regret letting that douchebag go.

“he went into the Superdome and played a mistake free, smart game and put his team in postion to win.”
i was greatly impressed with Matt today. i am a huge critic of his game, heck he’s our QB.. but today he managed the game well. took what the d gave him.. 3 yrds here in there by either feet or check downs. he didnt (force) what wasnt there. did not put up gaudy numbers but truthfully i dont think thats his game. he’s a guy that u can win with in a balanced system.. dont expect too much from him statistically; crowning him the next Peyton or this or that.. he has the skill to make all throws, just hope he makes the reads and makes the smart throw. after hearing so much about how smart he was at times he proves the opposite. today that wasnt the case. i loved his moxie.. his leadership.. and aggressiveness.. where at times i question his guts.

You’re entitled to disagree, Tex. I just know that Ryan took essentially the same team that’d been hopeless the year before to a fantastic year in his first season, and he almost beat the eventual NFC champion on the road in his first-ever playoff season to cap it all off.
Vick’s game in Green Bay was a good day, though; I won’t question that, at all.

Oh please stop it with the “Vick vs. Ryan” stuff. Vick isn’t here. He’s doing quite well in Philly. Matt Ryan is here. Even though he hasn’t won a playoff game yet, he just might this year.
But Matt Ryan’s game is very different from Mike Vick’s. Vick is big-play, Matt Ryan is controlled and methodical. The trick is the system. Mike Vick has to win every game in Philly in order for Philly to win, Matt Ryan just have to be smart and make good decisions and accurate passes. And they have identical records.
Right now, Philly needs the superstar. A superstar will mess up the Falcons system. So I don’t think that Vick will play as good here than what he is playing right now for the Eagles.
(But 3 TDs and 1 Rushing TD, which equates for all scores, looks really sweet on a Falcons box score… especially with almost 300 yards passing!)

I am a Saints fan and I say congratulations. Falcons won and that’s the bottom line. Been watching Saints-Falcons games for a long time, this one rates in the top 5. However, I still believe in the end the Saints will be the better team and has a better chance to go back to the Super Bowl. Falcons secondary still has some issues and Matt Ryan just doesn’t strike me as a super bowl caliber QB, running game is definitely in the top 2 or 3 in the league. Coach ishowed some balls today for a change. All in all Atlanta has a nice team, if Saints don’t turn it over Falcons get an L, but congrats can’t wait until December.

Comparing Michael Vick to Matt Ryan is completely unfair to Matt Ryan. Vick made the second round of the playoffs in his first year as a starter (age 22), the NFC Championship Game in his second season as a starter (age 24), and made three Pro Bowls in four total seasons as a starter. Ryan made the first round of the playoffs in his first season as a starter (age 23) and missed the playoffs in his second season as a starter (age 24). Expecting Ryan, or anyone else for that matter, to accomplish that much at that age is not at all fair, especially considering that Ryan doesn’t have the otherworldly talent that Vick does.
I keep saying this, but the proper guy to compare Ryan to is Joe Flacco, who came into the league in the same draft as Ryan and is the same age as Ryan. So far in their careers, Ryan started off better out of the gate but Flacco has shown more progress, although Ryan has gotten off to a better start this season. In order for Ryan to live up to the higher draft status and much larger contract he has than Flacco, he should reasonably be expected to significantly outperform Flacco over the course of his career. That is a fair expectation to have.

They could put Vick and the Eagles on the cover story of CNN.com tomorrow morning and I wouldn’t give two craps about it. It won’t change the fact that we took a team that hadn’t been beaten in many games — the defending Super Bowl champion Saints — and beat them in their own yard with our guy leading the way today.

Thee guys made our whole city proud today! this game reminded me why I have been a fan since all of my life. his is the type of Falcons team we, the fans, have always known you guys are capable of being. I think a championship is definitely in our future. Thank you Ryan/Gonzalez/Snelling/Turner/White and everybody else on the team-excellent, excellent job!
…And on the road no less. I felt terrible sitting there watching the Saints fans act like jacka*ses toward our players. And did anyone catch them breaking into song JUST BEFORE their kicker missed the field goal?? Mouths soon dropped afterward. Classic.

Dezz Nuttz – “throw the ball deep consistently, utilizing incredible foot work, throwing off foot or across his body on the run”… lol, too bad he can’t complete anything he throws.
i know what you’re thinking – “wow! he had 2 great games against sucky teams! he’s back!”. but the larger data on his passing game is horrible. and yet people like you will continue to worship him. you’ll point out that he took a team to the NFC championship game (for some reason losing the NFC championship game is now the determining factor for QB success), but then you’ll conveniently ignore where he took his team (hint – NOWHERE) after that. and he even admitted he was a horrible leader and didn’t work hard at all. but again, you’ll brush that aside.
and are you seriously still using the “deez nuts” joke?? i haven’t heard that since about 1998… i can tell your wit is really cutting edge!

Grit and professionalism. Refusal to give up and a feeling that we belong. Great teams fight, great teams battle and they get knocked down and they get up and do it again. Great teams make their own luck, and great teams win on the road.
What a battle today, and this is a good football team, and one day they will be great. Perhaps this is the year they leap to the level of greatness.
Man, I enjoy watching these guys, ever since Dimitroff and Smith, this is fun and they know what they are doing.
Our Falcons, just beat the world champs in their own backyard, and the ball bounced our way.

only an Eagles fan is delusional enough to come on a board of a team that beat the defending Superbowl champs and brag because they beat a team who is laughably bad.
this is why Eagles fans are generally considered the equivalent of human trash. if you don’t believe that, look at the crowd shots from their games – it’s like a lepor colony. I heard there’s a contest where if you can spot an attractive woman at an Eagles game, you win $1,000. No one has ever won…

Saints were in a gift giving mood I guess. Clearly the better team lost but you can’t have turnovers and miss field goals that High School kickers make. I see the Saints going 14-2 and Falcons 10-6 so there is a chance if Falcons get in with wild card they might play a third time.

Falcons will have good teams, win good regular season games, have teams miss 29 yard field goals but when it comes down to it they just won’t get it done. Ryan is good but not great, Defense is average but not great. Only great teams win Super Bowls. Don’t you get that? Yes the Saints kicker missed the game winner…but along the way the Falcon’s play inspired ball…..
Sometime it is better to get lucky along with being good.
I would imagine on the way to the Super Bowl last year, the Saints were good and got lucky a few times that made a difference.
Today Matt Ryan looked like a big time QB in situations he needed to produce in.
The defense looks to be getting batter, more pressure on the QB, and showing speed.
They should be proud of the effort, and the win…..great job hanging tough in a very tough environment !

the Saints needed this loss to bring them back down to earth. Drew Brees and Sean Peyton spent too much time writing books and doing interviews and commercials.
It was a short week for the Saints and they got the tough Falcons. Even with the mistakes the Saints made, it still took everything the Falcons had, plus a Saints missed FG, for the Falcons to knock off the Defending Super Bowl champs.
The funny thing about this though is that we’ve just made the Falcons season while getting our season on track.
The Saints will be fine and the Falcons will be the Falcons which is inconsistent.

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. — The numbers tell the story about Michael Vick’s almost overnight maturation from lethal scrambler into calm, precise pocket passer.
Vick, in his debut as the official Eagles’ starting quarterback, let loose for 291 yards and three touchdown passes in Sunday’s 28-3 dissection of the lifeless Jaguars.
It was the fourth-highest passing total of his career, and touchdown passes of 61 and 45 yards to DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin, respectively, marked the first time he’d ever thrown multiple touchdowns of at least 40 yards in one game.
He also compiled his third consecutive passer rating above 100.0 for the first time and still hasn’t thrown an interception since his final season in Atlanta, a streak that dates back to 2006.
Adding to the list of accolades, the Vick-led offense has now scored seven touchdowns in eight red-zone trips, including two more against the Jaguars.
“He’s been playing his heart out for the last six quarters, including this game here,” coach Andy Reid said. “It’s a tribute to what he has done and how he has handled things.”
But the real story behind Vick’s transformation into Reid’s version of pure, pass-first West Coast quarterback comes in the vignettes from his teammates and coaches. After the game, Jackson described to reporters how he implored Vick to quit the pocket-poise nonsense every once in a while to remind the worn-out Jags that the Eagles still boasted the league’s ultimate weapon at their disposal.
“A couple of times, man, I’m like, “Mike, C’mon, you gotta move a little more. You gotta use your feet and you gotta use your legs,’ ” Jackson, who went over 100 yards receiving for the second straight game, recalled. “He was like, “Man, I don’t really have no legs.’ I was like, “Man, I don’t really wanna hear that. Create. You’re Michael Vick, the fastest quarterback in the league.’ ”
Vick said Reid echoed a similar sentiment at the halftime, moments after the quarterback’s footwork helped keep alive the play that resulted in a 16-yard touchdown pass to Maclin with four seconds to go, the touchdown that provided plenty of cushion against a Jacksonville team that showed no interest in second-half comebacks.

This was a great game! Today’s victory was a lucky one, however, sometimes it is better to be lucky than to be good in the NFL. The Atlanta Falcons will not go as far as they think without addressing the issues of:
1) Mularkey’s predicatable and conservative play-calling
2) Sam Baker and his limitations playing the LT position
3) Untimely penalties at crucial times in the game
These have been the “constants” present with this team in all three games so far. Not that big of a concern last week since we waxing the Cardinals. Unless these items are resolved, they WILL lead the this teams first lost, and the ones to follow. The Defense is actually pretty good, but still a work in progress. They should be very good by season’s end.
FALCONS MANAGEMENT – do your fans a favor and resolve these issues immediately so we can truly enjoy this season!

wow, happy the falcons won but let’s get some perspective on the win.
1) Luckiest win since 1998 NFC championship. NFL kickers miss that kick maybe twice out of 100 times. But sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.
2) The defense could not stop the Saints passing. Brees had 365 yards passing and was not pressured often. Only the Saints stopped the Saints with turnovers.
3) The O-line is still having problems protecting Ryan.
Said that, the Falcons now have their two toughest road games out of the way and sit 2-1, where most everyone thought they would be. The schedule lines up very well and the Falcons SHOULD go 5-2 at home at worst and go at least 4-2 on the road, if not 5-1, with Philly being the only real road test left. The home sked is much tougher with BAL, NO, and GB left. 12-4 is achievable and 10 wins is probable barring any catastrophic injuries to Ryan.
Division title? Probably not, Saint’s schedule is weak too, only potential losses are PIT, at DAL, at BAL, and at ATL, but with some help the division could be for the taking when Saints come to the dome.

Saints should have won, but didn’t finish the drill. The result of this is a loss for them and a win for the Falcons. Deal with it. As I have always mentioned before, no disrespect but the Saints are a team not built for three or four more years. I read from someone on ESPN comments that Saints are like the Patriots (wrong!)
The falcons are building a dynasty like the Patriots did. It will be a gradual climb but I am very confident we will see the Falcons in he Superbowl within the next few years. (and not for just one year like in 98) There are two big differences Blank and Benson. Benson is somewhat of a budget owner, Blank is willing to spend whatever within the constraints of the NFL to win a championship and we will get there. This game was for one thing and only one thing only, last year was last year (Saints). To make a statement to Brees and company get used to second place in the division from now on. ( Barring Injuries) Brees is one big hit away from retirement Saints Fans.

Seasons have a way of evening out, as they had a chance to beat the Steelers before overtime and lost. This time New Orleans missed from 31 yards and the Falcons hit from 46, but it’s only three games in and defense is still porous to a good passing attack. I’m beginning to believe the defensive coach is not adjusting to the changes in offense, and too many of the Falcons need to take smart pill like Decoo (what was he doing running around where the ball was coming down, and he also did it later but didn’t get in the play). Ryan needs to learn to bear down when the Falcons are leading.
About the Vick fans still ranting and raving, he’s doing well so be fans of the Eagles and show up on their blogs in Philly and root for them.

It takes a pimp-homer to elevate a single win into a harbinger of a Lombardi trophy. If Saints idiot kicker doesn’t play shankapotamus, the buzzards lose. And, don’t forget how the Steelers (a real team) stomped your guts out only 2 weeks ago. But, falkin fanz need their delusions. it’s all they have.

If the queen had a set of gonads, she would be the king.
The cold hard fact is that the saints lost in OT today, after the Falcons rammed the ball down their throats, and scored on them for the win.
Once again, the saints lost today, to a better team. Live with it.

It’s FAR too early for grand proclamations – the Chiefs are what, 3-0?
Great game. The kids and Robinson are adding a LOT of energy on defense; I still say two years from now this team will be a defensive powerhouse. Hailing from Missouri, it’s great to see Moore and Weatherspoon play tough and play well, and Gonzalez showed everyone why he’s a Hall of Famer.
I thought Smith would pull the plug on Turner in favor of Snelling, but after Snelling came in Turner started hitting the holes with some authority. I like those two splitting the load and keeping each other fresh.
The NFC South is on-notice.

I just read that I’m an Auburn fan. Interesting.
[My first ever college football game experience: Auburn vs. UGA, 1997 Auburn wins, and a five year old girl gets shoved off her seat by some raging middle-aged man whom I'm pretty sure never went to college for getting excited after an Auburn big play. No joke, either. For the record, I'm a Georgia fan who actually WENT to college.]

Great game, HVE TO CLEAN Up special teams, especially kick returns. Ari took one to the house that got called back on a questionable hold & N.O. almost took a punt & KR to the house today! But great game. D. Robinson showed why we went & got him, think about it, how often did you hear the man he was defendings name called? Mike Peterson played well & Matt steped it up BIGTIME!!! This was real growth game for him. Like the rest of the Offense, ESPN had a great point saying Ryan struggled mightily in the season-opening loss to Pittsburgh. But the quarterback has been exceptionally sharp in wins over Arizona and New Orleans. The biggest difference has been on third downs. In the Pittsburgh game, Ryan was 4-for-11 on third-down pass attempts and averaged 4.2 yards per attempt with a 49.8 passer rating. In the past two weeks, Ryan has completed 18 of 22 passes on third downs, averaged 10.5 yards per attempt, thrown four touchdowns with no interceptions and compiled a 150.2 passer rating.
That’s the Matt we need to get to where we wanna be! Great game guys now on to S.F. no slip ups bc they’re pissed their 0-3 & will be looking to get off the snid & their capable, look they should have beat N.O. last week!

let’s give Matt Ryan credit he has arrived as one of the better quarterbacks in the league. We need Improvement in special teams. Keith Armstrong is not cutting it as the coach. Way too many big plays. Vangorder is not doing a good job either, His defense in zone coverage, often times are out of position. And we give up too many big plays. We need a scat back who can get too the outside with speed. Where is Michael Jenkins? he needs to get back on the field. The Falcons showed mental toughness against the Saints and that’s good enough for me.

“New Orleans Saints defense couldn’t get off field vs. Atlanta Falcons”
Let’s see ………….Time of possession: Atlanta 45:50 NO 27:15
Let’s see………….Total Yards Atlanta 417 NO 398
Let’s see………….Final Score 27-24
Howie Long writes:
The Saints, the defending champs, have to be a little concerned. Not only did they lose in overtime to their biggest rival in the NFC South, the Atlanta Falcons, but they also still have to play a month or more without Reggie Bush, who can turn a 5-yard dump-off pass into 15, 25 yards or even a touchdown. They also lost cornerback Tracy Porter, one of their defensive stars in the Super Bowl, and that’s not good, either.
The Falcons won by being able to pound the ball on the Saints. They have something very good going right now with Michael Turner and Jason Snelling pounding the middle of the line. But I came away from the game being impressed by the growth of quarterback Matt Ryan. A year ago, he went into the Superdome, and he threw three interceptions, two inside the 5-yard line. Today, zero.
Instead, it was Drew Brees who uncharacteristically turned the ball over. Since the 15th game of last season, he had gone 241 pass attempts without a pick. But he threw two interceptions today, so turnovers were the difference.
Each and every personnel move general manager Thomas Dimitroff and coach Mike Smith have made was geared toward beating New Orleans, particularly on defense with the acquisition of Dunta Robinson and rookie linebacker Sean Witherspoon. They made moves to improve their overall team speed and pass coverage, and it’s working.
Brees took a big hit on his left knee toward the end of the game. I’m not sure whether that factored into Sean Payton’s decision to not try to punch it in when they got down to the Atlanta 11-yard line. Payton opted to kick the field goal immediately with a first down. And when Garrett Hartley missed that 29-yarder, the Saints defense got worn down on the final drive.
Defensively, the Saints have made a living off giving up the yards and counting on their opponents to make mistakes. No defense does a better job of stripping the ball away from the opponents. But with the exception of the fluke turnover on the punt return, the Saints produced zip in this big division game.

Saints Geaux U, you guys were lucky to even get to overtime. A miracle bounce off of our punt return team and a miracle save back inbounds, a no call horse caller on Matt Ryan(A QB for christ sakes!), a no call on a face mask takedown of our kick returner, etc, etc… There were so many suspect calls and no calls that went the Saints way, as always in the Katrina Dome.
Face it, we beat you the entire game. The missed field goal in OT is called “karma” after all of the voodoo calls throughout the game. We dat fool, we dat.

Jeff……The Falcons looked great but that was one thing that alarmed me. The Falcons owned time of possession, ran the ball down the Saints throat, basically dominated the game and yet if it were not for a shanked field goal the Saints would have still won.
Falcons D is still giving up the big play and it almost got us beat for a 2nd time.

WHERE IS HIRAM SAINT???????? We should have lost this game – and yes, the refs were siding with NO- Shockey clearly held on that TD pass. We should have lost this game – two big stupid run back plays, a queer turn over on a kicked ball that hit Decoud in the back of the leg. We should have lost this game. HARTLEY SHANKS IT!!!! We should have lost this game. Midway throught the game: MAN, WE ARE ACTUALLY GOOD – we moved the ball well, throwing to everyone; was worried about Turner, but he started to turn it on in the 3rd quarter – would have liked to see a little more Snelling – if turner is #1, Snelling is #1A. We should have lost this game – BUT WE WOOOOOOONNNN!!!!

I love my Falcons but Turner is the most overrated RB I’ve seen in a long time. Play Snelling more and keep Twinkle Toes on the sideline. And don’t tell me about the big runs he broke- anybody could have run through those holes and probably broken it off for more yards too. He is painful to watch as he tip toes into the hole. This team is solid, but Turner not so much.

Saints Go U: Buddy, you got pounded all day. Brees made a key error. If not for 2 bad special team coverages and the lucky punt striking Decoud, you lose 21-3. We pushed your defense around the field all day long – Falcons on the way up, Saints just treading water in Lake Ponchartrain.

Great game overall. thats what a division rivalry game is suppose to be like, I hate blow outs in any game. Matt Ryan has now gained my support as a guy who can lead his team in the big game. Its a great win for the falcons to grow on. I was in the superdome yesterday and it was hostile. For the falcons to battle the Saints and the Fans was a great victory. We use to get 30,000 fans in the superdome, those days are over, we my have had 7,000 yesterday. It felt good to walk out the superdome yesterday with bragging rights for a change.

I am so proud of this team! That was just a huge win for us, I didn’t realize it’d been that long since we won in the Superdome! I screamed myself hoarse when Bryant made that field goal! Bryant seemed a little iffy in preseason but man, he came through big time for the team yesterday. Finally, it all came together. Matt Ryan was fired up and played tough and smart. He ran for yards when it was available (I’d been begging him to do that in prior weeks). Our receivers was wonderful and shout-out to my boy, Finn who didn’t have a ball thrown his way but was blocking like crazy, he was taking guys out! Tough running from Turner and Snelling (love Snelling). Too many penalties from Sam Baker! Even though we didn’t get any points from our turnover recoveries, awesome game from the defense! Would’ve like to seen Bierman get to the QB but Abe, Peterson, Grimey (don’t tell me he’s too short to play CB! Guy has heart and fire), wow. Mike Smith has guts galore, I wouldn’t have gone for the 2nd 4th down conversion but he did and it paid off! For once, I didn’t even have any complaints about Mularkey’s playcalling. We didn’t even miss Jenkins, I like our receivers as is. Way to go Birds!! Now don’t have a letdown against a ticked off 49er team next week. Dome field advantage, go get ‘em!

Remember it was a BAD coaching call to go for it on 4th down in the fourth quarter that ALMOST allowed the Saints to win. In fact, in most games the Falcons would have lost because most kickers are not going to miss a 29 yard field goal. With that said it sure is nice to come away with a win. The running game appears on track and Ryan seems like a man in charge again. Defense looked really good I thought in spite of a few long pass plays which the Saints and Brees will ALWAYS get.
Overall, Great win guys! Ryan fourth down run where he would NOT be denied the first down to me turned the game around.

What is the point of rehashing all the Vick Stuff? He’s gone, he isn’t coming back, he burned his bridges here, I wish him well in Philly but why are we talking about him still? It is completely pointless! I agree with the guy who said it makes more sense to compare Ryan to Flacco, I always watch Joe and think, she we have taken him instead? They are pretty evenly matched, interesting to see how it plays out. Matt is a very smart guy, doesn’t have alot of arm strength but that isn’t always necessary to be successful in this league. I like the way he played yesterday, poised but fired up and smartly! Go stuff it Trent Dilfer where the sun don’t shine!

My take: it isn’t that Turner is slow to the point of attack – it’s his absolute REFUSAL to cut to or run to daylight. Can somebody tell me what’s up with that? His low center of gravity style suits the run game kinda like Warrick Dunn had, but Turner just seems to not want to cut, spin, bounce out, or do anything to get free from a stack of bodies. My son and I have nicknamed him “Piles”, cuz wherever the pile on a football field is, #33 is sure to run into it. Follow Mughelli and bounce, MT!!!

Even I must admit I am proud of Falcons. Sometimes entire seasons swing on one play. That play was probably the short field goal miss by Saints. That splits uprights then world champions are 3-0 on way to another division title. Falcons drop that one to fall to 1-2 then it is uphill all the way. Not impossible but highly improbable. Falcons spat in face of providence in Pennsylvania after short field goal miss by Steelers. Not this Sunday. Ball control was excellent. Almost flawless turnover wise. If only some dunderheads would learn to watch out for punts. There is actually cause for optimism. Never thought I would type that. Time for a solid winning streak. No regression. STENDEK

Ryan ended the day 19 of 30 passing for 228 yards, two touchdowns, and a rating of 108. It was the second straight week he’s had a QB rating above 100 and the 11th time in his career. The Falcons are 11-0 when Ryan eclipses the century mark in quarterback rating.

I said I will come back so here I am… a few notes Falcons fans, you can’t sit here and complain that you gave the games away to the Saints last year and the ref’s jobbed you then when the Saints have the same thing happen, not expect to hear the same comments when the shoe is on the other foot.
Front Row, whatever else happens, you are no longer allowed to complain about officiating and your “homey calls” BS. Despite what you think, the refs aren’t giving the Saints games.
Next, the Falcons played well, they executed perfectly. No real TO’s (except for that fluke punt that hit the guy on the foot), and they didn’t miss a gimme FG. I don’t get all the comments about this being a DOMINATING performance by ATL. They averaged less than 4 ypc until overtime on that last drive and held Turner under 4 ypc for the game, that is unspectacular but solid. The Saints demise was not getting off the field on 3rd down thus leading to the huge time of possession advantage. The running game was part of the equation but Tony Gonzalez was the bigger factor. 9/18 on 3rd downs, 2/3 on 4th downs killed the Saints. I was dumbfounded that Gonzalez was WIDE OPEN play after play after play. And all that said, the Falcons won by 3 pts in a game the Saints should have won.
I am not taking anything away from the Falcons. They deserved this win. They were the better team Sunday, but if you expect to hear how great your team is you have to win by more than a fg on a day where your opponent turned the ball over 3 times… then missed a 29 yd kick to allow you the chance to win.

Legendary561: I’m no Eagles fan (go Dolphins) but I even I know Vick, pound for pound, is the best player in the NFL. He takes a 2 year break from football and comes back better than he was before. He’s a beast!
Also, Merrill Hoge said this morning, “There’s only two player in this league that can elevate their team to an extra level, Peyton Manning and Michael Vick”. WOW! Vick being mentioned in the same breath as Peyton again surely signals his revival 100%.

It is true that had Hartley hit the 29-yarder in overtime we would have lost. But remember, had Brett Favre not made the stupidest play of his career last January, the Saints wouldn’t have gone to the super bowl.

I’m not offended by the lack of coverage from most media outlets. This is Atlanta, when have we EVER gotten coverage from any of the media outlets??? I am however puzzled at the opposing players, in this case Lance Moore, who think that scoring a touchdown and then doing “The Dirty Bird” is something offensive when no one in a Falcon uniform has done the Dirty Bird in a decade. That only makes Moore and any other player who does that look stupid as well as uninformed.

Defensively, the Saints have made a living off giving up the yards and counting on their opponents to make mistakes. No defense does a better job of stripping the ball away from the opponents. But with the exception of the fluke turnover on the punt return, the Saints produced zip in this big division game.

This is what one means when it is said that they ” snatched victory out of the jaws of defeat.”
Let’s face it: the Falcons were Damned lucky to win that game, but if I remember correctly, the Steelers were lucky to score the only touchdown of the game at the most opportunistic time of the game. Also, didn’t these same Saints get “lucky” with an onside kick in some “meaningless” game against the vaunted Colts last season? Weren’t they decided underdogs in that game? I’m sure we remember what happened after that, don’t we???

Everyone talking about the luck on the missed FG, true that was lucky but the Saints aren’t even in a position to tie the game b4 regulation without the LUCK OF THE PUNT THAT GOES OFF DeCoud’s leg & gets saved in bounds by inches! You wanna talk about luck, how many times does a ball bounce off a players leg while they are inches away from being out of bounds & they are not involved directly in the action, only to have the ball barely stay in bounds & be passed from one defender to another? Statistically i bet you that even rarer than a missed 29 yard fg, so if you wanna focus on the luck, lets take some time to focus our attention there!!!! Because that set them up for a a TD & without it, the Falcons retain possession & run the clock down & the Saints are down 10 instead of 3 which means the last second fg at the end of regulation doesn’t suffice!!! Come on get real ppl!
& All ya’ll saying Turner is a bum, to slow & needs to be replaced by Snelling are you serious? The man is top ten in the league in rushing & your crying to replace him? What sense does it make to bench the 8th rated rusher in the league…….? & he would have been higher than that had he not set out the entire 2cnd half last week. The man gained 114 yards yesterday, what do you want from him?
This M. Vick hate kills me, I mean the man served his time, get over it! & this whole he’s only doing well against sorry teams thing will answer itself, just watch as it plays out. I just hope it doesn’t kill us in week 6 bc despite what any of ya’ll want to say, that man is a player & the last time I checked, the Packers weren’t a weak/sorry defense or team……but yet in 1 half he throw for 175 a TD with a passer rating of 101 & rushed for over 100 yards in just 11 attempts bringing them back from being blown out essentially. But I know I know, they didn’t game plan for him, so we can’t count that game really……get real ppl!
& finally all ya’ll bashing D. Robinson in the preseason calling him & loser & saying he was a stupid pick up, WHERE R YA’LL NOW???

Let’s not forget about the super lucky ball bounce off of Decoud’s heel that went back into the field of play, that is just as lucky as the Aint’s missing a chip shot field goal to win the game. If that hadn’t of happened, I don’t think that game would have even gone to overtime at all. Both teams had their chance in that game, but the better team won. >>>TEAM<<< means all players,,, including the kicker.

Hey Jeff, one of you guys shouold write about the fact that there are NO Atlanta Falcons in the NFL Hall of Fame. Falcons have been around for almost 50 years! None! The 2 listed on the HOF site were Falcons very briefly (neither of them bolded as being their main team).
Check out http://www.profootballhof.com/hof/teams.aspx
What about top 10 all time tackles leader Jessie Tuggle, or perenial All-Pro center Jeff Van Note or amazing QB surrounded by bad teams, Steve Bartkowski? Even returner Billy “White Shoes” Johnson, 17 year player Mike Kenn or All-Decade Team for the 1960s, Tommy Nobis. This is a travesty to me. For crying out loud, Rickey Jackson, linebacker for the Saints and Russ Grimm of the Redskins were just put in. Decent players, but look at the Falcons list above!

Pivotal Play: The game’s final possession was huge. The game’s final kick is a no-brainer. But perhaps the pivotal play was a series of eight plays leading up to the game-ender.
Sensing a swing in momentum after Hartley’s missed field goal and a gassed New Orleans defense, Atlanta ripped off eight straight run plays that burned clock and yards.
Running back Jason Snelling and Michael Turner rushed for 36 yards, an average of 4.5 yards per carry.

I would disagree, he did lead his team to victory but unfortunately his kicker couldn’t make a 29 yard fg. Are you really bragging about a 3 pt win?
The Saints had 3 turnovers, lost the time of possession advantage by a 2-1 margin, and was still a 29 yd FG away from beating the Falcons. I am not hating, kudos to the Falcons for perfect execution and beating the Saints at their own game by capitalizing on your opponent’s mistake. My point is this was a close game that could have gone either way. You would swear by some of the comments on here (yours included) that the Falcons won by 3 td’s and shut the Saints down.

Congratulations Falcons on a great win! Anytime you make a championship run you have to overcome adversity, and get some breaks. The Falcons had to overcome the Saints big plays and the crazy punt off of DeCoud’s leg. And get a break like the missed FG in overtime.
Coach Smith pressed the issue and had a “win” mentality as opposed to being conservative. The last two games have been that way. The two fourth down conversions on that 10+ minute touhcdown drive showed me alot. I hope they keep that “win” mentatility for every game.
Ryan seemed to be in control the entire game. He commanded the huddle and make all the right decisions. Glad to see Tony G back. He looked slow the first two games. Turner got some tough yards and managed to get over 100, but he still looks much slower than he did in 2008…need to get Snelling more touches. The defense gave up some yards (another big TD play), but the three turnovers were huge! Got to remain opportunistic and take advantage of every break.
Now, let’s rest, and then get to work on the 49ers, a surpising 0-3. The win over the Saints is great, but its means nothing if you can’t build on it. No time to let up, lose focus and allow the Niners to get confidence. Let’s support the home team and DEFEND THE DOME on Sunday!

I am still miffed how you leave a TE that is going to the Hall of Fame and leads the NFL in damn near every statistical category in the history of the position wide open time and again on 3rd down. The back breaker wasn’t the running game it was the 3rd down/4th down conversion success that kept drives going. Falcons had plenty of 3rd and 5+ situations that weren’t converted via the run.

The Falcons played well, but the Saints played better. Falcons won on the scoreboard only. Goes to show its often better to be lucky than good. This team is 9-7, 10-6 or so. Good, maybe better than last year, but nothing that great. Not yet, anyway.

special teams(sloppy). corners -(lacking).lucky (yes) still a great win by birds, but new orleans shot it self in the foot. and dont tell me im a bandwagon jumper. I ve been A falcons fan long before some of you could even spell bandwagon.this team still would struggle with colts and patriots. more work to be done folks. the secondary is still very suspect.

Hey so -called Falcon fan critics. Take a chill pill, we won the flippin game. A win is a win. It doesn’t matter how many points you win by.Arizona beat Oakland 24-23 yesterday. Guess what ,the game counts toward their record. When the Aints beat us last year 26-23, we didn’t say we only lost by three points, like the sore loser Aint fans are doing. Get a life, do the math and learn the game. Good grief.

You guys are really funny. You beat the super bowl champs in our house for the first time since 2002 and all of a sudden the falcants are the team to beat. But for our field goal kicker missing a easy field goal, you guys would be on this site crying. But I understand, this was your super bowl , which is about as close as your falcants will get to winning one. I saw a guy walking up canal st, today waving his falcants flag like it was a super bowl flag, that’s some funny stuff. I told him waive that falcants flag dude, while we waive our super bowl flag. Now come December we get to return the favor, so get ready while we second line out the Georgia dome with a win, you guys know how we do it. Oh and by the way, where does the falcants keep their Lombardi? Oh, I know, know where because they don’t have one.

The term “luck” is pervasive in common speech.[4] There are at least two senses people usually mean when they use the term, the proscriptive sense and the descriptive sense. In a proscriptive sense, luck is the deterministic concept that there is a force which proscribes that certain events occur very much the way the laws of physics will proscribe that certain events occur. In a descriptive sense, luck is only a descriptive name we give to events after they occur which we find to be fortuitous.

Kicking the Aints azz is way sweeter than winning a Super Bowl. Beating the Aints is what we do. The refs bailed your azz out last year in the Super Dome aka Toliet Bowl when Grimes picked off Mrs. Brees pass but was called for pass interference. Now, take that to the bank, loser.

When and if your sorry team ever win a super bowl them you guys can talk, other then that shut up, because you ain’t won sh.. Yet. All that stupid talk about luck, your sorry falcants wish they could get that luck and win 13 games in a row, lose 3 in a row then go on to win the super bowl. Like I said I understand, you FINALLY beat the saints after we won the last 7 out of 8 game a against your sorry team. Have fun now, it just goes to show, you guys are happy with getting a regular season win, we on the other hand get to party with the Lombardi. You guys would not know anything about that, your sorry team is still trying to win one. A question for you kids, what two teams in the NFC south that does not have a Lombardi trophy or banner hanging from the rafters. One is the Carolina panthers and the other is? You guessed right, the falcants, now that’s some funny stuff.

Speaking of toilet bowl, I guess that’s what they call the Georgia dome. For some reason they can’t seem to sell it out, must be the smell of a lousy team. I mean didn’t the falcants organization have to buy the remaining tickets so the game could be shown on tv last week. Ya, the falcants really have a loyal following. That thing you call a toilet bowl has hosted more super bowls then any other city, what about that rag roof thing in Atlanta. Maybe one super bowl you guys got to host. Go win a suer bowl HATERS, then come bcd and talk to me. Until then you guys are Luke my teacher would say when I was a kid, empty wagons makes the most noise. That’s what you people are, now run along little boys and girls. The super bowl champion saints are polishing their trophy, and dusting the space off for a second one.

Seems like ya’ll be talin’ a lot of smack on here but I think I can sum it all up by quoting a blog from a NO fan. “So yes, I’ll admit the Saints didn’t play their best game, but neither did the Falcons. And its that fact that scares the s**t out of the Who Dat nation.”
