Occasionally, we here at Weekend Predictions, home of the world’s only 100 percent guaranteed financial projections, assuming you didn’t fall for one of those silly picks we just put out there for comic relief, bring in a consultant.
So let me introduce you to my new market analyst, Todd Fuhrman, race and sports book analyst at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, where I once helped fund a significant expansion. I phoned Todd because Georgia opened this week as an underdog to Mississippi State, which is somewhat like the Ukraine opening as an underdog to Lichtenstein. These Dogs haven’t lost to those Dogs since 1974 (1951 in Starkville, when bread was 16 cents. Starkville looked the same, though.).

Trust me. I have a system.
Todd’s research goes back only 20 years but he’s never seen Georgia less than 3 1/2 point favorites. Why is Mississippi State favored?
“It’s tough to get behind Georgia,” he said. “Their passing game is stagnant without A.J. Green, their freshman quarterback has played well in spurts but he’s inconsistent and I think a lot of people were surprised how they came out against Arkansas.”
Can you offer any other tips?
“Sure.”
Where’s the best buffet?
“We have a 24-hour buffet with unlimited access for $45.”
Should I split 10’s?
“It depends what the dealer is showing, but why not?”
Red or black?
“Always black.”
Over/under on Cher’s age?
“Low 60s.”
Back to the game. Georgia opened as 2-point dogs on one line. It has since moved to pick ‘em. Momentum!
If they lose this, you’ll never see another Georgia win predicted in this disturbed corner of the universe.
Athens Dogs win in Starkville.
Devoted reader and commenter “Ted Striker” suggests this strategy might help Georgia ends its 0-2 slump in the SEC.

(Where Knowledge is Good)
Gaylord the Camel: He's representin'.
North C. State at North Ave.: Al Groh’s defense rebounded nicely in Chapel Hill. Now the trick is not turning back into Dave Wommack. The Wolfpack has scored 106 points in three games, including eight touchdown passes by QB Russell Wilson. OMG, research. What’s gotten into me? Tech wins but take State and 8 ½.
The G at Campbell: The Panthers hung with Jacksonville State last week. Impressive. Now they face the Fighting Camels of Campbell. Shockingly, a school with “Gaylord the Camel” as its mascot does not award athletic scholarships. Either that or they offer them and everybody just laughs. State by 3, say I.
Alabama at Arkansas:The Pigfaces are 3-0 and ranked No. 10. Ever have one those perfect days and then somebody drops a piano out the window? Arkansas: Don’t look up. Bama covers 7.
South Carolina at Auburn: Gene Chizik said his team needs to be more physical. The last time I heard a coach say that, Mark Richt’s team was getting drilled in Columbia. Take the gift 3 but Chickens win this straight up.
Kentucky at Florida: HBO’s Bryant Gumbel thinks the NCAA should put the Gators on probation for all of their arrests, reasoning: “I’m no legal expert, not by a long shot, but I do believe that driving drunk, robbing a convenience store, and hitting your girlfriend are all worse offenses than dealing with an agent.” I think I suddenly like Bryant Gumbel. Do I need a shot? Gators cover 14.
NFL Snack Pack

Year's over, Drew. You can put the trophy down now.
Falcons at Saints: The Falcons’ defense goes from facing Dennis Dixon and Derek Anderson to Drew Brees. But the Saints are coming off a short week and they just lost Reggie Bush, who has a broken leg to go with his fractured conscience. I have no idea why I’m doing this: Take the 4 but the Falcons win in an upset.
Eagles at Jaguars: Michael Vick is a starter again. The Philadelphia Daily News was so excited that it ran the headline, “Top Dog,” which I guess was a cute play on words, assuming you weren’t one of Bad Newz Kennels’ failed low-round draft picks. Fetch: Eagles cover 3.
Stooges at Dolphins: The New York Jets have devolved from reality show to a Three Stooges episode, when the gun powder accidentally falls into the pancake batter (oh Curly, not again). This week, Braylon Edwards was arrested for driving with twice the legal limit of alcohol and half the legal minimum for brains. Rex Ryan, a walking F-bomb on TV, suddenly says he’s tired of the drama. Seriously? Miami covers 2 ½.
Don't worry, Wade. Jerry's very patient.
Cowboys at Texans: Dallas is 0-2 after going 11-5 last year. It’s the Wade Phillips Market Correction. Phillips still has a chance to pass his father, Bum, in career coaching victories but at this point he’ll be happy with return airfare as a gift. Wrap this: Dallas wins on the road (but take the 3 points).
Lions at Vikings: Minnesota is 0-2 and Brett Favre doesn’t have any receivers. How long before he suddenly says he can’t play through the ankle pain any more? Just sayin’. Vikes win but take Detroit and 11.
♦
♦
Braylon Edwards gets pulled over for DUI. (I could watch this 1,000 times, and probably have.)
♦
Dept. of Hindsight
Last week: 10-1 straight up, 5-6 against the line.
Bottom dollars: 26-6 straight up, 17-14-1 against the line.
Lock of the week: Deadbolt.
♦
SACK SCHULTZ: Dude, this contest is like totally ruining my street cred. Went 10-5 last week. At 31-14 overall. Two guys named Ills (Georgia) and Axmann (Wisconsin) lead at 39-6. I’m pretty sure they’re cheating. If you haven’t played, it’s not too late too humiliate me! Click here for details and then here to enter.

Georgia wins over Mississippi State: nobody likes a Bully.
Georgia Tech wins, doesn’t cover: as much as I wish it was so, I don’t think Tech’s defense has improved yet; I think it was more a matter of the offense’s 10+ minute drive that got the Heels out of rhythm.
Georgia State wins too: for once it’s OK to smoke Camels.
Bama wins: Arky’s inability to run the ball gets it in trouble.
Gamecocks win: I can’t imagine Auburn bouncing back so quickly from such an emotional and physical game.
Florida wins: Bobby Rainey (Western Kentucky, 5th in the nation in rushing) lit up the Cats for 184 yards. No reason to think the Gators won’t have success on the ground either.
Falcons over Saints: not only did Nawlins play Monday it also spent a day flying home again. Saints won’t be prepared for a change.
Other NFL winners: Dolphins, Cowboys and Vikings.
Wagers of the week: NCAA-Kansas State -7 over UCF; NFL-Dallas +3 over Houston

Please people what did you expect? I think 8-4, 7-5 would be considered a realistic season this year. We have a new D scheme that doesn’t quite have the correct players in it yet. We played tough and with a lot of heart so far. Our O has been a challenge but not because of the players. I have a feeling that South Carolina is in for a rude awakening Saturday night.
The media fell in love with them after the beat UGA, but then people started to realize that UGA isn’t that good after all, especially on defense. SC’s other wins (Southern Miss, Furman) don’t really excite anyone outside of Columbia. Nevertheless, the Gamecocks have sneaked into a top 15 ranking without really beating anyone.
Expect South Carolina to get punched in the mouth Saturday. Auburn’s defense is more physical and exponentially better than UGA’s defense. South Carolina’s OL doesn’t have the depth to compete, and they will have problems running the ball. The game will fall into Garcia’s hands, and everyone knows that result.
Auburn by at least a touchdown, probably 10+

MSU v UGA is a PK
Bama is a 7.5 fav (You gave them 4)
FLA is a 14 fav (You gave them 18)
LSU is a 10 fav (You gave them 3)
So to recap, you basically pick the spread on every game except GT (who is a 8 fav) and you have them losing by 10 at home

NC State’s D is similar to UNC’s (without Austin, Quinn and the starting DBs).
Both have OK lines and good LBs (assuming Nate Irving is close to his 2008 form).
GT will move the ball on State – the big question is whether they can stop Wilson.
The sports radio folks up here in the Triangle expect State to win – but then again they were talking on Monday that UNC should have beaten GT.

Paul – Georgia Tech has simply got to stop scoring on long runs. It’s hurting them. The ball control in the 2nd half of the UNC game gave Groh extra time to make defense adjustments. More of TJ Barnes, less of 290 lb. NTs.

Delbert – I think it will be similar to the UNC game – quick scores from both teams in the first half. In the 2nd half I expect GT to keep pounding it inside and wear out State, while keeping Wilson on the bench.
Beast – GT doesn’t need to stop Wilson – just slow him enough to hold State to FGs a couple of times. I have confidence that GT can move the ball on State and I expect this game to be similar to GT-MSU last year.

Bryant Gumbel should get his facts correct. No Florida player held up a convenience store nor hit his girl friend. A large portion of the arrest were for underage drinking. 90% of the students on a college campus drink underage. Most of the players committing more serious offenses have been dismissed from the team. Like Auburn’s star quarterback Cam Newton. Bryant’s comments are just sensational journalism.

Bye Bye
September 23rd, 2010
8:29 pm
How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.
Sit back and be grateful for the seven or eight wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 50, and only after a bowl win over a nobody opponent.
It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.
Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.
Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.
Feel those hobnail boots in your face?

I hope my UGA Dawgs lose…seriously. It seems the only way we can force Richt to make any decisions is to put pressure on him…and the only way that seems to happen is when UGA loses, fans stop coming to the game, and folks stop contributing money. I hope they lose the rest of their games even to heaven forbid, the hated gators and jackets. The bleeding needs to really flow before change can occur at UGA football. This is what is about to happen, write this down. UGA will defeat Miss St. this weekend not badly but maybe by 10. When AJ returns, we will gain confidence even though we could have been just as good without AJ. Players will play better, coaches will coach better and we will either win out or lose one more game. Steve and all those delusional Auburn fans. Funny stuff. Carolina will DRILL Auburn.
Take SC and NC State. Easy money. UGA will probably lose to Miss State. No way that team recovers from the season-ending loss to Arkansas. Well, it isn’t really a season-ending loss, but the Richt coaching staff isn’t smart enough to educate them that Florida and South Carolina have IMMENSELY harder schedules left to play that what UGA has. Then again, Mike Bobo is a staff member. Miss State wins by at least four, say 27-23. I will say it again, 2011 is Richt’s final year in Athens.

Bama is just to physical for Arkansas and will wear them down half way through the 3rd quarter. Mallet has a tendency to fade as the game goes on. Bama by 14. UGA on the road is a toss up and they lost their 1st two close games (on the scoreboard at least) … time for them to win one. UGA by 3. Kentucky is not good enough to beat Florida and the refs in the Swamp though it will be a low scoring affair. Florida by 10. South Carolina is more physical than Auburn and Auburn’s defense is still suspect. This will be a shootout. UGA dropped two picks against Garcia but Auburn won’t and they will win at home by 3. LSU by 10 over West Virginia. To big and a good defense.

I still think a lot of folks are underestimating how bad Georgia really is this year. Mallet is great, but Arkansas isn’t and Georgia made them look better than they really were. South Carolina beat us with one guy for crying out loud.
Richt really has this team playing at a low point. The d-backs are confused, the O and D lines are weak, the receivers can’t get separation, and the running backs can’t break tackles. Everyone on this team is waiting for someone else to make the play.
I hate to say it, but I think we are on a 3 game losing streak after Saturday night. I think Miss State not only wins, but could even win by 10 or more points. Come on Dawgs, prove me wrong.

Bryant Gumble was not just referring to the Gators with his convienience store and beating up girlfriends comment….but he was with the drunk driving comment….but “this Georgia HOMER writer” was trying to say those two things were related to Gator plays….which is not true…and WHICH IS JUST BAD JOURNALISM…especially when the writer is a Georgia fan….and Georgia has more arrests than the Gators do….and their former AD was a drunk driver and they had to go to Florida to get a decent AD. DUI’s and verbal threats are terrible offenses….but you do not ruin someone’s career or life over one offense (Dunlap, Hammond, Rainey)….especially when those players had been model citizens before they made bad decisions. But writing stories where facts are intentionally misused just amounts to BAD JOURNALISM. Period. And you do not put a program on probation because a player gets a DUI. That breaks city laws, not NCAA rules. But I do think a program should lose scholarships if that program does not correct an obvious problem….and both Florida and Georgia have an obvious problem with players respecting and followng the law.

I’ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team. When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?
As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the State of Georgia.
Will it never end? Apparently not while Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is perhaps the biggest hypocrite in the United States. But even with all the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still can’t win the SEC.
So you’re paying him to be BCS champions, but he can’t even win his SEC division. So why do you pay him millions of dollars a year?
Just asking.

Neither Dunlap, Rainey, or Hammond had ever been in trouble before their one and only encounter with the law. I would hardly describe any of the three as established “thugs”. All three made terrible decisions that have and are impacting their college football careers. But the stupidity has to end sometime or the head coaches should and will eventually be help responsible…and it will hurt the programs if things don’t change internally.
