Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity is not oblivious to the storm around him but he remains confident in coach Mark Richt.
ATHENS – Stationed in his first fire storm since becoming athletic director, Greg McGarity last Saturday chose to go in a different direction than some of the angry, torch-carrying villagers in Athens who believe the best course of action following SEC losses is to open more “Fire [Coach]” Facebook pages.
McGarity waited for Georgia coach Mark Richt to address his team after the home loss to Arkansas, waited until Richt released most of the players from a holding room under the stands at Sanford Stadium and then walked in.
“I don’t generally go into the locker room because I don’t feel I really belong in there,” he said. “What I did do was go in there after the game, but before the media came in, just to see Mark and the 12 or 14 players who were still there waiting for interviews. I just said, ‘Mark, let’s get ready to go next week. Call me if you need anything.’ I just felt he needed to know I was there to support him.”
Let’s start with the elephant in the room: McGarity said he has confidence in Richt and the direction of the football program. He responded, “Absolutely,” when asked.
But he also was wary of even going down that road.
“I know how the spin goes on these things,” he said. “I’ve seen how things are written and what’s said. People think, ‘Oh, he gave him a vote of confidence. You know what that means.’ But it’s not like that. I just want people to know that we’re working hard and we’re driven to get better every day.”
The Bulldogs are 0-2 in the SEC for the first time in 17 years. The coach in charge then (Ray Goff) is associated with a low point in Bulldogs’ history. That isn’t the case with Richt. He won two SEC championships in his first five years at a school that hadn’t won one in 20.
But national championships at Alabama, Florida and LSU have changed the landscape. The Dogs leveled off. South Carolina, Arkansas and Auburn are on the rebound.
The good news: Mark Richt's Bulldogs could be favored in their next five games.
Barbarians are at the gate.
There are Facebook pages to fire Richt and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo. There’s a “Fire Mark Richt” website. Juvenile or not, it’s the reality of life in the SEC. McGarity knows that, but he’s not walking around campus, swinging an ax.
“You can’t make a snap judgment on things, especially sitting in my chair right now,” he said. “I haven’t even been here a month.
“We’ve played one-fourth of the season. In athletics, people can turn things around in a hurry when they believe in themselves and they believe in their leadership. I think if our team had not fought back in the fourth quarter [against Arkansas], we would have some concerns, but that’s not what we saw.”
The Dogs conceivably could win their next five games, beginning Saturday night at Mississippi State, before heading to Jacksonville. But losses to South Carolina and Arkansas — following the summer’s arrests, last year’s 4-4 SEC record and the 2008 slide down from a preseason No. 1 ranking – appears to have split the fan base on Richt.
McGarity spoke at a quarterback club meeting Monday morning in Athens. Reading the audience wasn’t difficult.
“It would’ve been very easy to show up there if we were 3-0 and ranked,” he said. “I knew some people in that group were upset. I’m sure everybody is disappointed. But at the same time, I have to do everything in my power to support the team and show leadership. People look to leaders at times like this, just like players look to coaches.”
Asked if there were any harsh remarks at the breakfast, McGarity laughed and said: “No, but I don’t know what happened after I left.”
It’s probably for the best.

In a realistic point I thought we would split games with USC/Arkansas. Well, we didn’t. So that puts us one game behind. If we reel off 5 straight wins which I think we can it will calm the storm.
I want to save my judgement on where the direction of the program is going right now. I can see it honestly both ways. However, if your are 6-2 going to Jacksonville and win that game then I think the coaches have not lost control. If we lose again before Jacksonville, then the players have given up and we are in a huge whole. Then something has to change other than a coordinator or two.

Would firing Bobo middle (early) in the season like this make things better, or worse? I’m not sure.
I like everything about our team except for him. He’s in over his head. He needs to go to a subdivision school and perfect his craft. UGA needs better (and they should be able to do better!)

Look, here’s the truth…. read the trends
Anyone who knows anything about business and/or management know this… trends do not lie.
People, especially Richt, defended Willie Martinez way too long after it was clear his effectiveness was marginal at best. The trend and the numbers told the story, yet excuse after excuse after excuse has been made.
Since Jim Donnan’s recruiting talent has been purged from the pipeline, arrests have gone up and performance has gone down.
The numbers don’t lie. The trend is pointing down. Where is the empirical evidence that anything will change between now and the time Arron Murray is a senior? We’ll have to roll out younger players to replace the experienced ones leaving in critical positions like offensive and defensive lines… We don’t seem to be getting nearly enough from our tailbacks anymore… Our WR corp is still not as strong as we need it to be… and there are coaching deficiencies everywhere…
Some people like to come here and quack about all the glory CMR has brought – 7th winningest coach, 6 top 10 finishes, #2 in 2007 , yada, yada, yada…
The trend says we’re sliding down again but where is the sign we are going to be better anytime soon?

No need to fire anyone right now- midseason? At the end of the season if the offense does not progessive, which with the return of AJ you think it will, then Bobo’s is in trouble.
If this season ends up being a 8-5 season, which could very well happen then CMR will have a not to fun meeting with the AD. At that point CMR will have to evaluate once again the staff, but this time himself as the point man for the program.
CMR at the end of the season may have to ask himself, what Pat Dye once asked of the team. Is he man enough for the job?

Jeff: A storm at UGA is if attendance was in the 40,000 range. A storm at UGA would be if no one purchased tickets, except at discount prices. A storm would be if UGA was only shown on Thursday night games if Boise State was not playing. But heck, if Tech can exist under these conditions, UGA is safe at their current level. Perhaps there is no storm.

I see a program that has a redshirt freshman quarterback and a new defensive coordinator who is trying a different tactic. There will be bumps in the road either way. Overall I like what I see on offense we just need to tweak the pass coverage, tackles and the offensive line. I would hold off on the torches and pitchforks until we get deeper into the season.

Everyone needs a little perspective. Here you go:
Dooley record: 7-3-1, 6-4, 10-1, 7-4, 8-2-1, 5-5-1, 5-5, 11-1, 7-4, 7-4-1, 6-6, 9-3, 10-2, 5-6, 9-2-1, 6-5, 12-0, 10-2, 11-1, 10-1-1, 7-4-1, 7-3-2, 8-4, 9-3, 9-3, and then he got the keys to the kingdom (A.D.)
Goff’s record: 6-6, 4-7, 9-3, 10-2, 5-6, 6-4-1, 6-6, and he got the boot.
Donnan’s record: 5-6, 10-2, 9-3, 8-4, 8-4, and he got the boot.
Richt’s record: 8-4, 13-1, 11-3, 10-2, 10-3, 9-4, 11-2, 10-3, 8-5.
Holy Crap, Are you guys freaking crazy. We’ve got one National Championship in the modern era, and somehow we think that we’re supposed to be world -beaters every year. You guys are crazy. Mark Richt may never win a national championship, but he is the best dang coach that we’ve ever had including Vince Dooley. In Dooley’s first 10 years, he lost 5 games a year twice and 4 games a year four times.
And don’t give me that, his success was when he was playing with Donnan’s players. You said the same thing when Goff went 9-3 and 10-2, and you said that about Donnan when he went 10-2 and 9-3.
And all of you crazy people calling for bobo’s head. Please remember that he is a bulldog. He cheered for him like crazy during that comeback and ot win at AU, and now you are killing him. He loves UGA more than you do, so shut up. I think I recall all of you complaining about CMR needed a OC. He needs to let someone else call the plays, blah, blah, blah. You got what you wanted, so shut up. You know the plays before they are going to be called, because you’ve watched every snap for the past ten years.
And quit talking about Alabama, Alabama, Alabama. Just turn into an Alabama fan if you’ve got such a man crush on Nick Satan. He is a snake. Just ask those boys in La and Miami. He’s not loyal.
I’m so fed up with you fans, that I’m about ready to root against the dawgs, so that CMR will get fired, take a year off, and go coach somewhere where he is appreciated.

cantondawg, you and others may very well be correct.
I will go out on a short limb here and say there is no way this team wins 10 straight.
Make no mistake here – I do not support mid-season change. I will support this program to the very end.
I will NOT, however, sugarcoat facts, ignore trends and underestimate perception. Right now, the proud Bulldog Nation is down, we are once again, for what appears to be the 3rd year out of the last 4, in a “rebuilding” mode.
At some point in a project lifecycle, a reassesment has to take place. There are very distint periods where every program has to “re-stock and re-build”, but 3 out of every 4 years shouldn’t have to be written off.
If we want to be ‘elite’, we have to demand better.
I want my program to be ‘elite’, I don’t know about some of us…

CMR is the head of our beloved football program, and we need to stand beside him now more than ever. Let’s wait to judge until after the season. I will admit being nervous about the direction, but we have to give the new personnel (revamped D coaching staff) time to make their mark. Let’s do our best to be patient this year.
Shame on all of you who left the game early on Saturday. We gotta support this team through thick and thin. You leaving early only hurts the program.

“If this season ends up being a 8-5 season, which could very well happen”
Frankly I don’t see 8 wins. Who are we going to beat? I’m not so sure we even get by Miss State this weekend. Colorado and Vanderbilt are not gimmes with this team. And with the “3rd and 4 so everybody go deep” play calling by Bobo, this season is looking bad.
Yea, AJ Green would make a difference on offense, but he doesn’t play defense or call the plays, so he’s not going to be the savior for this season.

I think the people who want to fire Richt wanted to fire him before the season began. It wasn’t hard to guess that losing both these games would be quite possible, that we’d be happy enough to split them. Games don’t always work out the way you want. We knew to expect bumps this season. Neither of these was a “bad” loss (unlike, say, Kentucky last year). But I get the feeling some people wanted us to lose to prove their case.
Those who think nothing less than an undefeated season is acceptable need a reality check.
Also, is there such a thing these days as a loss that DOESN’T demand someone be fired?

Coach Richt is failing once again at addressing an immediate concern. It took him two years to finally replace his defensive coordinator. Last year, he did not play his two freshman quarterbacks when Joe Cox was playing with a dead arm. How much would that experience last year have helped Murray this year against South Carolina and Arkansas? Would Mettneberger have got in trouble down in Valdosta if he saw playing time last year?
Again, the Georgia Bulldog offense continues to stall due to inconsistent play calling by the offensive coordinator. The OC also oversees the offensive line. For the past three years inept and inconsistent play calling on the offensive side of the ball has been killing Bulldog drives. Bobo is still here and the Dogs still have problems. Once again, Coach Richt is failing to make a command decision. Once again, Coach Richt is failing at keeping his players out of trouble.
Where does Coach Richt think that this continued inconsistency is acceptable since he is doing the same things that he was doing in years past? The road, folks. That is where Coach Richt and Coach Bobo are heading. They are fixing to hit the road. All of this inconsistency is unacceptable. Correct it NOW or hit the road. Go Dogs!!!

There were plenty of fans inside and outside of the stadium grousing about play calling, coaching, player performance, etc. — even during the Herschel Walker years. Those who say it wasn’t so either have short memories, didn’t pay attention or weren’t there.

The defense is still playing with a secondary recruited by Willie, so that isn’t going to get much better overnight….but there was some progress Saturday I thought (except those pesky TD receptions).
The offense is the glaringly obvious problem. I mean we scored SIX points against SC and Furman scored three times as many?
We have been glaringly missing a big physical back here at Tailback U and it showed the past two Saturdays. I certainly hope we get the young man from Carver. He’ll be starting next year if he comes to Georgia or he can sit for a year or two at Alabama.

robodawg,
As jtdawg pointed out earlier, there is a trend developing and it’s not good. Saban comes into Alabama replacing Mike Shula(who was terrible), and wins the National Championship in 3 years. Richt has been here 10 years and we are about as close to winning the National Championship as Vanderbilt is.
Arkansas, Auburn and even South Carolina are passing us by. Instead of Richt taking us to the “Next” level, he has taken us “Down” a level. There is indeed a trend, and it’s not good.

We all support our team, we just want the very best opportunity for our team to have success. Fire Mark Richt, really? Let’s look at this team. Very talented, but inexperienced redshirt freshman quarterback. New defensive scheme with players not recruited for this scheme. Played two good football teams with legitimate chances to win each game. At the beginning of the year, I would have been happy with 9-3 record under these circumstances. Slow your roll dawg nation. If anything, be very concerned about the play calling moreso than the players. By the way, the word out of the South Carolina game was “missed tackles”. Why did no one talk about missed tackels when Herschel was running through people? Lattimore is a great, not good, back. Give him credit. Mallett is a first rounder next April. Give him credit. Bulldawg nation I understand the anxiety I have it too but we lost to two good football teams this year I believe that were both more mature than we were in key areas..Dont let the early losses fool you because it does look uglier when you lose early in the season especially two conference games but with that being said I believe we are going to finish 10-2 and win the SEC east…South carolina with their conference schedule is going to finish 5-3 in the conference. Florida will lose to alabama and us and we will get the tie breaker at 6-2 in the conference. Our team has been battle tested against two strong teams early in the season and this only will make things alot easier on us as the season goes by..Arkansas is going to scare Alabama next week folks mark that down. Their offense is going to make fans of many teams question their defensive coordinators..lol. I cant wait for Todd grantham to get his players into the system we will have faster linebackers with closing speed that will stop the little underneath routes to running backs like you saw arkansas do to us. And we will have a taller and more physical secondary, not willie martinez’s secondary. Just give it a year or two on defense. Offensively I have been wanting bobo to go for a long time but if our offensive line would man up it would help things out tremendously and our running backs have NO VISION that worries me so we must get isiah crowell at Georgia next year that can make plays even when the offensive line is not at their best. If you thought murray looked good so far wait until kris durham and aj green are on the field at the same time. I will close by saying firing coach richt this season would be a disaster unless he only won like 4 or 5 games because we need this deep recruiting class bad in Georgia this year! Also for those that say we need to hire kirby smart I am sorry but would be a terrible hire he has proven absolutly nothing to me that would make me believe he is a good head coach. At alabama nick saban is the defensive coordinator not kirby smart I can assure you that. That would be another ray goff in the making! Lets rally Dawg nation behind this team there is a lot of football to be played ….GO DAWGS!!!

There are 4, 5, 6 plays in almost every game that could determine who wins and who loses……
The Dawgs have been within that 4 – 6 play window in both losses. We didn’t make a play and the other team did. That doesn’t mean that the sky is falling….it just means we lost 2 winnable games.
History shows that winning 80% of our games is a good year for Georgia. Most of our players are from Georgia. We are truly rooting for Georgia football and with mostly Georgia-grown players.
Do I wish we had won these past 2 games? Absolutely. Do I think we should have won both of these past 2 games? Absolutely.
But we didn’t. So…..we just get ready for the next game and plan and prepare to win that game and the next game………and every other game we play.

He deserves to let it play out. It could go either way. UGA athletics is a lot like a business ( it is really)
When the money quits coming. When lot’s of folks don’t renew tickets. That’s when the alarm goes off.
200 or 300 hundred people not renewing won’t raise an eyebrow… let 4,000 not renew and a million or two in Hartman fund money not come in, people will take notice. I think Mark needs to juice up the program. I think Searles and Bobo need to go at year end. I think if Mark really means business, he ask to lay out 750,000 for the best OC available and say 500,000 for the best OL coach out there. We are stale. After watching Clemson this weekend, our offense looks like the 50’s. I think I could game plan for it. Clemson had Auburn on their heels all night.

The team needs to wake up and the coaching staff does also. Just because you won a SEC Title when UF was down does not give you a free pass into lala land with the program. It is high time the results on the field reflect all the hype that the coaches make a big deal out of during recruiting. Go do it!

Anyone calling for Mark Richt’s job is ignorant.
Need I remind any of y’all that it took Bobby Bowden over 25 years of coaching to win his first Championship. And the only reason he DID win in 1993, is because he finally gave up the playcalling duties to his young OC, Mark Richt.
Now, I was with many other people and thought that Richt needed to give up the play calling duties because the offense had grown safe.
Now I wonder if Richt started calling games that way because he knew his BFF Soft Willie was so far in over his head as a DC, that he had to ensure the offense play it safe, so as to not put the onus on Soft Willie.
Regardless, this team hasn’t won the East with Bobo as the OC, and we can honestly say they should have in 2007, but Bobo cost us the South Carolina game that year and Soft Willie cost us the Tennessee game.
Here are the fact: Richt feels beholden to Bobo. Not only is he Bobo’s mentor, but he knows (as we all do) that Bobo has 5 kids under the age of 5 years old. He can’t fire Bobo. Now, repurposing Bobo might be the way to go.
Relieve Bobo of his play calling duties, but have Bobo still be the OC, you know, like Neil Calloway was the OC. Be involved in game planning, still be the QB Coach. Still have a job at Georgia. He IS a good QB coach. Greene, Shock, Stafford, Murray. Bobo has a fine record as a QB coach.
He just cannot for the life of him call an offensive football game that has any semblance of rhyme or reason.
On a critical 3rd and 4, who sends three receivers 10 and 20 yards down field without a single shallow crossing route or a running back outlet receiver coming out of the backfield???
I mean, COME ON!
But again, anyone calling for Richt’s head at this juncture is simply ignorant.
Most in Bulldog Nation always knew that the stars were aligning for 2011. Hell, Bill King and a great many of us said THAT before the start of LAST season. How 2009 and 2010 were the steppingstones to 2011.
As to why Murray didn’t play last year, that IS on Richt. Yes, Murray was hurt at the start of the year, but once October rolled around, think even BEFORE the Kentucky game, he should have pulled Cox’s behind.
At least last year served as proof to how 2006 would have gone if JTIII was the guy all year. Sheesh.
As for the yahoos talking trash about Grantham, I mean… REALLY? First of all, you people can’t tell the night and day difference between the Martinez and Grantham eras? Let me just point you to the part of the stat sheet that reads “Defensive Penalties,” specifically, the part that reads, “stupid, stupid, undisciplined personal foul penalties.”
Yeah, forgot about all that, didn’t y’all? It’s gonna take more than a spring, fall, and 3 games for Grantham to get his defense installed correctly. PLUS, we’re missing what the 3-4 really needs. The Mountain at Nose Tackle. It’s gonna take a good part of the year to get everything running smoothly with the 3-4. Don’t be Chicken Little on Grantham yet. We suffered through 5 horrible years of Soft Willie.
So don’t try and run CTG off after 3 games, fools!

The program is fine. We probably win one of those games if we had AJ. Not to make an excuse but if you take the best player off each team then there is going to be some attrition. Anyway, college football goes through changes. USC is simply better this year. That’s not saying their program is any better. Richt is our coach and should be for a long time regardless of what happens this week or the next. Georgia football is pointed in the right direction.

Okay we lost at columbia to a solid south carolina team this year and we played them early in the year. We just lost to an arkansas team that will prob give Alabama all they can handle this year. The reason why things look so bad right now is because our losses didnt get spread out and we happened to play two very good football teams. We lost to teams that were not named florida or tennesse but the teams we just lost to are better than those teams this year I believe. Arkansas did not blow us out and we should of beat them. Aj puts us over the top in that game. I am telling you if we can get through this week it’s going to be down hill from there With AJ coming back and us not playing offenses as good as a arkansas

I’m afraid we are falling into the same trap that the Breves fell into with Bobby Cox. He won the World Series back in 1995 but has sucked ever since then. But based on that 1 good year, he got a free pass for the next 15 years.
We are doing the same thing with Richt. He won the SEC back in 05 so let’s give him a free pass for the next 10-15. That’s not how it works people. If you want to be a 8-4, 7-5 program, then you should be happy with Richt. If you want to get to the next upper levels of the SEC along side Alabama and Florida, then you have to demand more.

Look, we are talking about Paterno and Bowden. Legends, but how different was college football in the 80’s and 90’s when each won it. The reality is that there are PLENTY of young coaches out there who are more than qualified forthe job, lets not be naive.
If you think CMR will be the coach at this school for another 10 years without winning a NT then I think again thats pretty fool hearty. The days of a coach staying at a program for 20 years until he wins is over. CMR window is closing whether the die hard supporters like it or not. CMR has a window of 3-4 years if he can turn this season around to produce what would be considered Elite results or he will be shown the door just like Tuberville and Fulmer.

cantondawg, I have to respectfully disagree.
A 5 star rating from magazine service looking to make money from football fans/enthusiasts does not make football players. Tennessee was raiding Georgia targeting those same type of players and produced exactly one SEC championship and a NC in the timeframe Donnan was here. Not exactly conference dominating, I would say, but very good nonetheless.
Donnan’s staff, however, in retrospect had a very good eye for “football” talent, not recruit rankings. He got the very talent here from this state needed to be very dominant for the early part of the 2000’s, regardless of the grading “stars”. There is no doubt Donan whiffed on talent as well, highly ranked players that were trouble on and off the field.
But it’s obvious this regime has stars in their eyes, regardless of character or “football” mentality. Alot of “me” players that are’nt making plays. I think recruiting is focusing on the wrong types of players at times as well.

Get real. That guy has no interest in coaching college ball and I doubt if he’d even be a good fit. Who else? Dan Mullen? The O will obviously get better with AJ, but not if Murray doesn’t get some pass blocking. Bobo stood there Saturday watching our QB get squashed and didn’t have a clue to combat that pass rush, except endlessly try draws, that got nowhere.
Every DC in the SEC is gonna do what UT did last year to UGA’s offense, and Bobo isn’t good enough to adjust.

When an offensive coordinator lays the blame on a player’s failure to get rid of the ball, then that coach is not looking in the mirror-FAILURE TO EXECUTE.
When a head coach continues to allow inadequate, inconsistent, and inept play calling to continue for three years running, then that coach is not making the correct decisions-FAILURE TO EXECUTE.

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.
Sit back and be grateful for the six or seven wins you’ll get most years. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.
It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.
Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.
Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

Since dawgtards seem to love living in the past, how about remembering the Jan Kemp trial, which exposed UGA and Vince Dooley for the jokes that they were. My favorite quote from the trial was this one:
O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for the defense, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”
The best thing about the trial was that it completely killed Vince Dooley’s shot at Congress, since he was exposed as a fraud and a cheat during the trial. Make no mistake – Dooley knew everything that was going on.
Nothing has changed in the almost three decades since the trial. If anything, the abuses are even worse. Exhibit #1: Jim Harrick and son.
Today the players are even more illiterate and felonious and, well, just plain stupid, as evidenced by their arrest records and record number of penalties. Even Vince Dooley couldn’t have controlled this mob, much less Mark Richt. And now even the fired former AD is a drunk debaucherer.
There’s a reason why UGA is known as The Cesspool of the South.
But hey, congratualations to all dawgtards for clinching the Fulmer/Richt Cup.

You Dawg fans who keep repeating “30-24″ like a mantra enjoy yourselves all you want. The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.
UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.
Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is practically worthless.
Jan Kemp exposed the crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or self-discipline.
The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against dummy-athletes, it’s usually no contest.
It’s pretty pathetic to see UGA fans who typically have never been within miles of a college classroom and who live or die with UGA’s weekly results on the football field.
So keep on posting your “30-24″ all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old job back at the Waffle House before your unemployment checks stop coming.

Also, when I said “Nothing has changed in the almost three decades since the trial. If anything, the abuses are even worse”, what I meant by that is that UGA was administering beatings of GT on a regular basis before, during and since. However, since that time, it really has gotten “worse”….much worse…..51-7…..8 of 9….ugh….

this is just week four coming up and the foaming of the mouth is intense. Another loss or two will bring more anger and the the old apathy feeling kicks in………Let’s let the next few weeks play out and see what unfolds. It is ALL about COACHING now. We know what we got in a team…..But let this team lose to State, Tenn and Tech, it’s gonna be interesting……If I’m the AD, I ‘m looking HARD at what these coach’s can do with this team from here out…..If they lose this team and get beat by teams that we should not lose to ( I’ll name them, State, Colorado,Tenn, Vandy, Kentucky, Idaho, Tech)then I don’t want to predict the outcome of Mark’s tenure. Fla and AU are probably L’s.
My guess is Mark comes back if we lose them all, for 2011, which we won’t lose them all.

UGA Insider, and others,
Most of us are not supporting a “Fire CMR right now!” mentality. But stop ignoring facts.
“All of this bs about fire CMR is asinine! Wake up UGA fans… all college football programs run in constant cycles. Please remember that Alabama was playing in the Independence Bowl only 3 short years ago. Auburn has been down recently and so has UT. Yes, SC and Arkansas are better this year but when they lose their experienced qb’s they will be back in the toilet.”
UGA fans need to wake up?
How about our “constant cycle” being rebuilding 3 out of every 4 years?
How about “wait till next year!”??
How about looking at the facts, the trends, compare.
Mark Richt and this staff is getting paid to be a top SEC team – this top SEC team is 10-11 vs our own Eastern Conference teams since 2005.
Bulldog nation expects a constant from its football team – smart, tough, physical football. When was the last time we watched our top SEC team show that kind of tough, physical football other teams fear? Vs. Hawaii in the 2007 Sugar Bowl?
When’s the last time we beat an equally good, or superior team? In our own stadium even?
How come Jim Donnan got run for losing to TN, SC, and FL but it’s unfair to criticize Mark Richt for doing the exact same thing?
Is anyone very tired and annoyed that we lose to FL every year? Doesn’t it hurt any of the blind homer’s feelings that Jacksonville isn’t even a rivalry game any more? Are we just supposed to hope for a New Years day bowl (now that there are 163 of them anymore) and at least beat GT? Is that where are hopes for our program are supposed to stop?
Or I guess we are supposed to just take it for what it is.
How about analyzing what is really happening here and wishing that staus quo isn’t good enough?
Facts, just make “some of us fans” foolish I guess. Man, it’s funny how the door only swings one way for some people..

Bottom line,
McGarity (sic), Richt and staff need to seriously analyze the defficiencies of where we are, how we got here,a nd how to adjust mentality and practice to get those issues corrected.
Every “business” should be run in the same manner. If it was your business, and you consistently underachieved or didn’t meet expectations you strongly feel you are capable of (and you are paying your CEO to achieve), then shouldn’t you analyze it and fix it?
Don’t hate Bulldog Nation supporters for wanting better; not all of us are ridiculous in our expecations and what it takes to meet them.

I’ll take 7-5 as a positive season at this point. Get to a bowl game (preferrably one that has a jersey with no post game value to it)and win that. But IMO I think we will do better as the season progresses and might end up much better than these last two games have shown. One thing for sure they did not quit in either of those games. That speaks volumes for these kids and the heart of this team. Are they going to make mistakes, sure with a new QB and new D scheme. Forgive them of these and be fan. I support Coach Richt 100%. Haha, I went over to the AJC Tech blog the Sunday after the Kansas game and Tech fans were calling PJ, “fat ass” and calling his offense “high school.”
Now, one win against a team the same Techies called “depleted by suspensions” when LSU beat them, and all is forgiven.
My point is, losing breeds discontent at all traditionally successful programs, not just at UGA.

Fellow Dawgers,
Please, allow the Yechers to project their frustrations onto us. You must have sympathy for them. They have yet again hired an overrated, overpaid coach that is only further pushing their dead program back to it’s rightful home of mediocrity. They have a campus that is properly situated right smack in the middle of the Atlanta ghettos where you stand a better chance of getting robbed or mugged walking to class than passing a pretty, English speaking, girl. Their baseball and basketball programs are the epitome of what an annually overrated, over-hyped team is. And most Tech fans never even attended the institute. And the ones that did couldn’t hack the engineering classes so they were left jumping onto the “M-train” like 95% of the athletes. Getting a management degree from Tech and bragging about it is like getting a physical education degree from Harvard. What a waste of time and money. So please, have pity on our little sisters from the slums of Atlanta!!!

What I expect the new AD to do is come up with a plan to stop the off the field discipline problems. That’s where this whole thing is killing us. It is nothing but a big distraction from focusing 100% on the football field. You can’t have a team with players being suspended for X number of games then coming back like nothing happened.

I think what concerns me the most is that I’ve heard CMR say on more than one occasion in the last 3 years that the coaching staff is doing the same thing today that it was doing back in the first 5 years at UGA. Any good business leader (believe me this is a business) knows situations change, personnel changes and what used to work may not work now. We all have to change to continue to reach the goals we set before us. I hope CMR knows and understands this.

Was that because he was playing with Jim Donnan’s recruits?
I believe CMR is an excellent x’s and o’s coach, but you’ve got to have the horses no matter who the coach is.

If I was Tech, I would be very proud of the 1990 Championship. I’m sure I would use it as weapon in the blog war. I think a few facts get forgotten. We remember the 5 downs. We remember the “clip” during the Rocket return. No one remembers that Colorado went into the bowl game with it’s second string qb and it’s third string tailback. I believe the second string qb got hurt and was out of the game during the first half. Tech played in a second tier bowl against the #17 team in the nation and some how leaped over Colorado. I think Notre Dame was ranked around #9. Again, I would gladly take the title. I wouldn’t scream too much about having to share it.

I love the way the media now tries to create controversy and “stories” so that they can attract readers. Actually I hate it.
We lost a couple of games to 2 good SEC teams. We are not at the top of the heap. BFD.
In every game someone has to win and someone has to lose. Some teams just have better teams some years than others. That is reality.
I have a lot of confidence in CMR. He has won 90 games in 9 years and will probably win 100 games in 10 years. He runs a stable ship.
I hate the media for trying to hold a football coach responsible for their players’ mistakes off the field when the coach has had them for 2 or 3 years and their parents had them for 18 or 19 years.Hold the parents accountable or would that not be politically correct for you.
Its always the teacher or coach. It never is the kid or his parents. The crap gets old.
Vince Dooley won 201 games in 25 years and for you non math majors that averages out to approx 8 wins a year – and colleges started playing 11 games during the regular season and a bowl game in 1971 which was 8 years into Coach Dooley’s 25 year career. Based on that, he would be run out of town by today’s unreasonable media jerks and jerks that call themselves fans.
Real fans stick by their team and a good coach through thick and thin. But today’s media writers and younger fans do not have the class of those 25 years ago. I mean lets face it Jeff, you are no Jesse Outlar.
So Jeff, quit pandering to the negative. There are plenty of wonderful things to write about the Bulldogs including graduation rate compared to the rest of BCS schools, GPA’s, the success that former players find as a result of their experience at UGA and oh yeah the 90 victories the football team has over the past 9 years which puts them towards the top of the list as one of the most successful BCS programs in the country.
And Jeff -by the way – go soak your head and shut your trap while you are doing it.

This year is a lot like 2001. The defense needs a total revamping, and a freshman QB is at the helm. That 2001 team won 8 regular season games and lost the bowl game to Boston College. Well, that freshman (Greene) became the all-time leader in wins, and Van Gorder’s defense became one of the best in the nation. Richt spent the next 7 years at the top of the SEC averaging over 10 wins a season.
It would not be a disaster if this year’s team did the same. As long as similar improvements are made, there is no reason to believe Richt wont have the Dawgs right back at the top next year with another top defense and a seasoned Murray at the helm for 3 more years.

They hired Meyer and won 2 more titles since then. UGA looks at Richt’s past accomplishments and gives him a bye for current and recent poor teams. Go freaking figure…

I hate the Tech posers that come on UGA blogs.
I hope McGarrity drops Tech from the schedule like second period french. We could pick up Clemson or Notre Dame or FSU every year earlier in the schedule.
We might not win as many against them as we win against Tech, but those schools’ people have a lot more class than Tech haters, you know – the Wanna Bees.
And it would cut into Tech AA revenue so deeply that the GTAA would probably start running financial deficits (again).
So what do you think? Would all of you other real Dawg fans out there like to dropkick Tech off the schedule and be done with their smart mouth arses?

Defense is simply tackling and coverage. Man on man. Yeah, some zone and blitzing but pretty much man on man. Blown coverages and arm tackling has killed UGA this year.

You sound like the voice of reason in a wilderness of irrationality.
As you stated the middle part of the dogs schedule is favorable and they stand a good chance of winning 5 straight and going into the UF game at 6-2 with some momentum. That’s not bad.
The last thing the dogs need to do now is panic. Still a lot of football to be played.

When recruiting time rolls around this year, and IF we are told that we have a recruiting class in the top 3 in the nation, I’m gonna send some terminal cases of Montezuma’s revenge to whomever begat such lies and untruths. The fans have been sold such a bill of goods for years now, so where is the proof? Did the arrests, etc. knock the ’stars’ so low that they are incapable of playing football, or is it the usual riot of partying and heck raising among the jocks? The pitiful performances are in full view, witness Ealy’s whiff of a block in the waning seconds of the game. What’s up with that? If the players are not committed to playing football, and had rather booze around, as well as other things, then, just call it like it is and save the rah rahing for another time.

A team that will pay an assistant coach $750,000 and let a little dog that wants to be mascot hang on until they find a white-a$$ed dog to be the next Uga . . . is a team in disarray. Why won’t they name me the next Uga? “Brown a$$ed and too old”, they say. Well, McGarity’s ears stick out and Richt is developing a bald spot. I think it is time they make a commitment to me and they need to do it before we get to Mississippi State where they have some bulldogs of their own. I don’t want to play second fiddle to another mascot. I wish Coach Richt felt the same way about playing second fiddle to another SEC team. Hey A Fan – very good points about UGA. I still remember the Dump Dooley campaigns every year from 1969-1975. Let’s be honest: UGA would like a better coach but doesn’t believe it can get one.
Therefore, it is simply easier to call another school’s coach a disloyal snake in order to make oneself feel better. Snake or not, the thought doesn’t help UGA.

I watch a high school football game almost every week. When the playoffs come around, I watch nearly every game, on tv of course. I see better fundamentals of blocking, tackling, and holding on to the ball than I see when watching a UGA game. I wonder what happens to the ’star’ athletes when they report for duty at UGA. Do they go brain dead after a few beers, or what? Maybe beer should be banned in Clarke County.

I do believe we are in good hands with McGarity long term. I do have some serious concerns about the direction of this program. As many posters have stated, the off field issues really raise questions of who besides the players are in charge of the program. How many off field arrests has Saban had the last 2 years? Bobo throws his RSF QB under the bus- He should have been fired for that alone. Next I hear that Granthem has been reigned in because he is too EMOTIONAL. I hope that is not true. His players responded and admitted that they need it. If you have ever played football, you know it is part of the game to have a good coach that cares crawl up your backside. I was at SC and AR and saw no emotion come from TG as in the first game. Let him Coach or he will be gone. Next, from a very reliable source, our star JR. LB from ‘09 that was having a difficult time with the decision to skip this year- Left due to no discipline, players cheating on their workouts (skipping) with someone signing off on them, lack of commitment from other players. Was he right? 9 off field arrests- maybe so. Wonder why other teams are stronger and faster? This answers alot of that. If anyone had told me that Murray as a RSF would have played at the high level as he has for the first 3 games, I would have bet the farm that we would be 3-0 in spite of BoBo. I have always believed 100% in CMR. I am extremely sad to say to day that I am no longer sure. I can only trust that if he loves the University of Georgia as much as I do, he will continue to make the proper changes that will right this ship. I hope that he can honestly look himself in the mirror and make the commitment to do what is in the best interest of our program. I am confident that Greg McGarity will. There are issues that must be recognized and dealt with now if I am CMR. I hope that he has not waited until it is too late, but its not looking too good.

Don’t doubt it – Dawgs will win handily in Starkeville, unless they are worse than I perceive
However, there sure is a lot of goody-goody going on here by some. Do I believe these Bulldogs will be much better by the end of this, considering the change in defense and RF QB? Absolutely. Do I believe we’re going to roll into Jacksonville (6-2)…. nope, not one bit. Doesn’t mean it will not happen, but…
Someone give me one season since 2004 we didn’t lose a game we abosolutely should have won…. just one….. and by lose, I me really LOSE.
Unfortunately, for as good a man CMR is, and a fine cach as well (don’t doubt that for one second), something is terribly missing consistency-wise from CMR and his program.
I think we see at least one more loss between now and Jacksonville — then life gets a little harder.
We’ll see improvement; and if nothing changes this year, then what do we expect for next? Oh, just wait til 2011……

Why can’t we get a young OC like clemson? Hell that kid is from my hometown up here in North Georgia. Will Muschamp is from Rome, Georgia. All of these great young asssitant coaches from the state of Georgia and we end up with retards like Willie and Bobo. A HUGE part of Richt’s job is the ability to recognize young talent in the coordinator ranks. So let me ask all of the Richt defenders what grade would they give him for hiring Willie and bozo? If you say anything other than an F your a damn liar.

Unfortunately that was my point. They would not bite. The problems are much deeper than 0-2 start in the SEC. I was at SC. The team came out of the tunnel in slow motion, no energy, and honestly they acted like they just stepped off of a space ship. We were in both games with a chance to win. We just were not ready when the first whistle sounded like so many of CMR’s teams over the entire 10 years. I cannot count the number of times that we have spotted teams 14-21 plus points and then come back to make it close. This should never happen (if you get your team ready to play).

The bottom line is that CMR is a good man but not necessarily a good Head Coach. A good Head Coach will be more decisive, making changes to better his staff and team regardless of which assistant may be hurt in the process. CMR waited too long to relieve Willie of the DC job and so he was not in position to do the same to Bobo, as to dismiss both Coordinators at the same time would be almost suicidal. College Football is bigger now than before, and SEC and other major programs are employing better coordinators from the pros or from smaller programs. I was excited for Bobo because he is a Bulldog, but I want the program to be competitive with Florida,Alabama,LSU,and other national programs, and Bobo has not demonstrated that he is capable of competing with these schools. I believe Grantham will need more time to recruit his players, therefore it is nonsense to criticise the defense now, furthermore except for the missed tackles in Columbia and the blown coverages against ARK, they performrd well. Murray will be good for years, but Richt needs to improve his staff if he is correct the downward spiral and recriting has to be better. Every year we read of great recruting class, yet we struggle against the bottom feeders in the SEC. CMR should be given another two years to turn it around or be fired. The apologists like Cantondawg, who believes that Georgia cannot replace CMR are crazy. The Chicago Bulls replaced their coach with their Assistant Coach and won six NBA titles. The New Orleans Saints hired an Assistant Coach from Dallas who was not in great demand and won the superbowl shortly afterwards. Oklahoma won the NC after hiring an assistant from Florida.
The folks that have voiced their displeasure are loyal fans of the program, and all wants whatever is best for the program, we are just not happy with the current trend.

I honestly the team will continue to get better each week, however that does not mean they will win each week! I am sure the players didn’t think they would be 1 and 2 right now but the results are what they are. The team will learn from their mistakes. It is certainly not time to dump on the players and coaches. Vince had some pretty ugly years when the fan base expected nothing but undefeated seasons. This is a game and the majority of the players will not go to the next level and play on Sunday so I plan to support them as best as I can, win or lose, they are still Bulldogs!

If Georgia played as well as Clemson did against Auburn I would feel better about the program. Georgia will do better as the season progresses, Murray becomes more confident, and the defense playing better in the new scheme. What I am not sure about is whether Bobo can match wits with the other teams DC. I will be watching Tennessee going forward, because we all agree that they are down, but I feel confident that Dooley will have them moving in the right direction pretty soon, and then what will all the apologists for CMR say.
