Georgia Tech doesn’t look ACC ready, starting with defense

Paul Johnson's offense, led by Joshua Nesbitt, scored just one touchdown in its last nine possessions but struggled big-time defensively.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – In the final game before opening the defense of its ACC championship, Georgia Tech missed tackles, missed assignments, dropped passes, roughed the kicker, roughed the quarterback, certainly roughed its own fan base, shanked a punt 13 yards, seem to float in and out of consciousness against a team that a week ago was dropped by North Dakota State and looked so bad on defense that one was tempted to ask, “So, anybody have Dave Wommack’s phone number?”

Forget the question of whether the Yellow Jackets are ready for next Saturday’s ACC opener against North Carolina. They’re not. The only question is: How deep is the hole?

“There’s nothing magic I can say, like,  ‘Abracadabra, kazaam,’ and it’s going to be fixed,” coach Paul Johnson said. “You just have to get better.”

The Jackets just suffered the worst loss of the Johnson era. Projected to win by two touchdowns, they lost 28-25 on Saturday to a Kansas team that a week before was dropped by North Dakota State 6-3.

Fortunately, North Dakota State isn’t also on Tech’s schedule.

Kansas receiver Daymond Patterson spins away from Tech's Kyle Jackson. He finished with seven catches, including a touchdown.

Kansas receiver Daymond Patterson spins away from Tech's Kyle Jackson. He finished with seven catches, including a touchdown.

Humiliation was well represented on both sides of the ball. Even Johnson’s vaunted offense struggled. The Jackets scored one touchdown in their last nine possessions.

But the problems really start with the one area on Tech’s team that figured to improve this season, and the one area that absolutely had to: defense.

When Johnson fired Wommack and hired Al Groh, he had no illusions that Tech suddenly would morph into Alabama. He just figured the Jackets would be better than Alabama-Birmingham. Hasn’t happened.

Tech continues to miss tackles and blow assignments. The middle of the defense looks soft against the run, even going back to last week’s game against South Carolina State (178 yards rushing) . When Kansas went to a no-huddle early in the game, watching Tech’s players was like looking at a kicked fire ant hill.

The Jayhawks scored touchdowns on two of their first three possessions. They converted four of their first five third-down situations. It would have been five out of six, if not for a dropped pass. They had a freshman running back, James Sims, rush for 101 yards. They had a receiver, Daymond Patterson, with seven catches for 85 yards and a touchdown.

So much for the Groh effect.

To what extent this can be attributed to a slow transition to Groh’s 3-4 and how much of it is simply bad play can’t be certain.

“You’ve got to get off blocks,” Johnson said. “Sooner or later, it can’t all be the scheme.”

True enough. But who takes the fall for players coming out flat (linebacker Kyle Jackson: “We didn’t look like we were ready to play. We came out kind of dull.”)? Or failing in basics like making a tackle?

“I’m in charge of it,” Groh said. “If there’s any finger to be pointed, it’s at me.”

Groh said the Jackets have practiced enough against the no-huddle, so “to say that was the issue would be a cop-out.”

He said of the 3-4 scheme: “It is what it is. We’ve made the transition. We’re playing the defense. We just have to play it well enough. You’re not going to be competitively tough if you just start making excuses.”

When asked if Kansas — who managed only a field goal in 12 possessions against North Dakota State — is a team that should score four touchdowns against the Jackets, Groh got a little testy.

“That’s fantasy football. I just deal with what happened today,” he said.

But it’s not fantasy — Kansas really did score only three points.

Groh: “That was then. This is now. That’s not the game coaches play. Coaches play the game that’s played today. The rest is talk radio, those guys who have all the answers.”

If Groh has the answers, it doesn’t show. The Jackets go to Chapel Hill next week to start things for real, and as Jackson said when asked if he felt like the team was ready: “You know — I feel like we’ve got a lot of work to do.”

Maybe you missed . . .

Only positive thing I can think of is that we played possibly our worst game under CPJ and still had a chance to win at the end. We should have gotten killed the way that we played.

This loss was all on the coaches. Tech was confused in all 3 phases of the game. They looked as though they had no scheme for either the offense or the defense. Despite all their ineptitude, they had a chance to win this game at the end. But even then, they didnt really look like they knew what they wanted to do. The scariest thing was the offense. Just as in their last two bowl games: if the option gets stuffed, they have no way to adjust. They meekly go down in flames. If they can’t put up 45 points per game, this will be a long, cold sesaon…

Man, remember the mid-1990’s when a Gt or UGa fan would watch some of their game, then get ready for the real games that day to follow. There is some form of relief in knowing that your team just isn’t in line for anything big, so you can instead watch the rest of the games and enjoy your day.

Tech still has no defense, it is pitifal. Tyler Melton couldn’t catch a cold, and should never be allowed to play wide reciever, and Mr. Hill is not much better. Face it, without Thomas we have NO passing game, and for all the good Joshua does he is no passer. However, when he does put the ball on target no one can catch it consistantly. We looked lost out there at times, worse than CPJ’s first season. Looks like at least 4 maybe 5 losses for this team maybe more. Today was really pathetic, and feel that for the first time CPJ was out coached, and his team was not ready or focused, of course if somebody could throw and catch, it might have been different.

Say what you want to say but this team is in trouble. Until we develop a passing game, every team we play will put 8-9 men in the box and DARE Tech to beat them with a passing game. Tech’s passing game is an embarrassment. Our receivers had man-to-man all day and we could not capitalize. Without a passing game, the LB’s will play tight and crush the LOS on every play. A strong passing game keeps the defense honest and gives the running game space to operate.

The defense is a joke. Our defense looks like it is coached by Peewee Herman. They are not mean, dirty, nor nasty. Look at some of the top NCAA defenses. These guys look mean and act like they want to rip off your head. Our defense looks like they are afraid to get dirty. Defense wins championships but not Tech’s.

It could be a long day against UNC next Saturday.

UNC loses to Pitt & LSU, FSU loses to Florida & OK. VT loses to Boise & James Madison, Miami loses to Wisconsin & OSU, Boston College loses to USC. Clemson loses to SC.

A high school offense, Absolutely no passing game, no defense in spite of Groh expertise. It takes first class athletes to win. Thanks CPJ for killing the season early, Started listening and loving Tech in the late 40’s with my late Dad. Living retired in Florida–going boating. A long year it will be for these Jackets. It looks like we believed that if we rolled our helmets on the field we would win based on our season last year. Kansas did not get that memo. Neither will anyone else left on the schedule. The coaching needs to improve. The all powerful offense was offensive today. I expect the defense to be mediocre. I have been told that this offense will score points and be very difficult to defend. I think I have been told an untruth. It will be interesting to see what CPJ comes up with moving forward. I agree with SC’s comment about the DC’s position/pay. We may have taken the “easy” road in hiring a semi-retired and inexpensive DC. A younger guy who’s hungry to eventually make Head Coach, who’s both skilled and passionate in D coaching, might be worth the extra bucks. The D squad needs spit-n-fire from above. We seem to have a tradition of coming out flat in a lot of games going back to before Johnson. The attitude, mindset and ‘culture’ that’s supposedly being changed is obviously still mired in the same apathy in regards to playing on the field. The problem isn’t so much the offense or defensive schemes but simple fundamentals, execution and attitude. I saw it last year and I see it now: come out and smack Tech in the mouth a few times and they seem to lose interest and focus. With such basic issues continuing to exist it doesn’t matter one iota what offensive/ defensive scheme Tech runs. They will struggle.

Been a Tech fan for more than 50 years, so I’ve seen a lot of highs and lows. I don’t jump on and off the bandwagon, and I will not ridicule the players and coaches. But the disappointment and frustration with how they played and coached today are there, nevertheless.

I would be less than honest if I said I was hopeful for the rest of the season after the first two games. As Schultzie noted, the middle of the defense looked so “soft.” That was the exact word that went thru my mind watching last week and this week. They may be lighter than most teams– especially the interior three— but they also appear slow off the ball and slow to react. That’s a combination that does not bode well. And frankly, experience as the season goes on won’t help size and speed/quickness.

As for the new scheme, I am no coach but common sense says that you play the 3-4 you darn better have interior people who have some size and are not easily man-handled. So what do you do? Live with what you have? Go back to the 4-3? I dunno. I’m not paid the big bucks to make those decisions.

Offensively, I like Johnson’s office, but when you simply are not going to be able to grind it out and bust a big play on the ground down after down, series after series against an athletic, well-coached defense. You have to be able to throw the ball some for crying out loud. And not just the homerun ball. Tech’s short-mid range passing game is absolutely horrendous.

Nesbitt is a warrior thru and thru, and he is able to take a tremendous amount of punishment, Neither can anyone ever question his heart. He can rocket it long, but he seems to have little or no consistent touch, especially on out patterns. I just wonder how much they work on throwing the ball in practice, especially when it comes to timing routes.

I am still trying to be hopeful. I won’t give up on this team, players or coaches. But from what I have seen against a pair of teams which were to be— and nothing has changed my mind— two of the three weakest teams on the schedule, well, it’s going to be tough road.

Guess the main reason I have hope is that the ACC as a whole is weak with the possible exception of Miami which at least competed today against a strong opponent.

Oh yes, there was some good news today. It came out of Columbia.

GIve Kansas’s defense some credit. This was a well coached defense today who played their zones perfectly and made the tackles which forced Tech to try more pass plays than I think they would have liked. Tech did not look like a well coached defense or special teams today.

Man, some real joke of GT fans out there! We did stink today guys and likely may not win our division given what i saw today. However, you still support your team..period!! I will take 8 wins if we can get it considering our talent level seems a bit depleted. We played so bad on special teams and defense that it was painful. I think Groh is a good coach but we DO NOT have the personnel to run that 3-4 scheme. UGA has better athletes than we do and can pull off that scheme better than us. We are to small up front and our linebackers are just not fast enough and just don’t have great skills i’m afraid. I am surprised a little that we have not improved on defense at. Same bad habits as last year with some of the same guys. POOR TACKLING!!!

A 13 yard punt and roughing the kicker and quarterback were the real killers. Stupid penalties and the combination of dropped passes and nesbitt struggling throwing, is tough to watch. I stand with the people who are upset about this loss, but it’s only our 2nd game guys and we can turn it around. It will be up to the players and coach johnson if he can get their attension to step it up on both sides of the ball. We are still 0-0 in conference play unlike uga who is 0-1 and have ryan mallet coming into town next. I think both teams could be in for a potential long season.

Good luck with Groh, folks. I actually feel bad for you because I hate Groh more than I hate GT. If you had been paying attention to how Groh dismantled UVA with his incompetence over the last four years or so, you would have been screaming bloody murder when you hired him as DC. Get used to Groh’s “testy” responses to any question he doesn’t like. He thinks he is smarter than everyone else, and is insulted that anyone would dare question anything he does. The worst part? By the time your coach realizes the 3-4 isn’t going to work, you’ll have a roster full of the wrong recruits slotted in the wrong place learning the wrong technique. And then you’ll have to waste another year transitioning back to the 4-3. In the meantime, try to love “read and react”. By the way, if you think you will get Groh to leave quietly, think again. He doesn’t take rejection well.

PS If he hires his son to coach the d-backs, run for the hills

Our lack of a passing game falls directly on Paul Johnson. Nesbitt was hitting receivers in the hands and they couldn’t hold on. Why? Because in practice they get no reps catching the ball. They spend all their time learning blocking schemes for the running game. I love the option but if we can’t pass reliably we will never achieve prolonged success.

well said **old school**………..really do not know what to say about the defense…….it really doesn’t matter whether the offense picks it up or not if our defense gives up YARDS (over 300) to a kansas offense that could muster only 3 points against a school in the dakotas and is ranked in the 15th percentile for offense…….”does not bode well” is putting it mildly……..as far as the offense, the rushing yards were there…..the option worked……but as happens in college football, penalties, special teams play, and turnovers can muck things up……..and then adjustments need to be made……and when you’re playing catch-up, you might need to be able to complete a pass or two…….it’s called balance……..and being able to pass the ball would do wonders to keep opposing
defenses “off balance” when running the option……..and until nesbitt proves he can pass with
consistency, then tech will be at the mercy of a running game that cannot afford ANY miscues on handoffs, pitches, etc, and a porous defense that in a few seconds, can negate a 10 minute triple option drive for a TD…..go jackets

Yes the D is a problem. But it really isn’t any worse than last year. Didn’t we give up alot of points last year to questionable teams? MS state? FSU? Vandy?
The real problem is the offense and special teams. Going from a marginal passing attack last year to a non-existant one will kill us. The opposing D’s have no reason to not sell out against the run when the QB can’t hit his targets and the recievers can’t handle the passes. Special teams was atrocious this afternoon. A 13 yd punt that resulted in a KU TD? A running-into-the-kicker penalty that resulted in a KU TD? An out of bounds kickoff that resulted in a KU TD?
Last year our D was not good but we could outscore opponents and control the clock.

Kansas looked like they had ignored SD St and prepared all summer for Tech. If so, it wasn’t a bad strategy. They ignored the pass, stacked the line, knew their assignments, and contained the running game just enough. As we’ve seen repeatedly, when the rushing isn’t quite getting it done and Tech plays poor defense, they can get beat by anyone.

OK, Tech saw man coverage and attempted to pass more. Good idea. But, based on recent performance I have to wonder if they really practice this part of the offense, or just draw it up in the huddle. The “route running” was imprecise, the timing was off, the balls that were decently thrown appeared to surprise receivers, and Nesbitt’s sloppy mechanics often resulted in passes being badly off target. The running game was not effective when needed. The A-backs didn’t break many one-on-one tackles and there were too many 2nd or 3rd and longs to sustain drives.

The defense was the biggest disappointment, though. They were on the field forever and looked untalented, physically overmatched, and confused about their assignments. They didn’t tackle worth a damn. Even when they got close enough to make contact, they didn’t wrap up and the D-line and LBs were manhandled much like Iowa did last year. Groh’s in-game adjustments didn’t impress, either.

Finally, all facets of the kicking game looked like they are viewed internally as an afterthought.

Appears everyone – coaches and players – have a lot of work and soul searching to do if they are going to get better and have a year they can be proud of.

Just when I thought the ACC couldn’t embarrass themselves any worse they have what might be the worst Saturday of any alleged major conference in BCS history. Tech loses to a team that lost a week ago to North Dakota State, Va Tech loses at home to a subdivision team, Florida State is slaughtered by Oklahoma and Miami would have lost to Ohio State by 30+ points but for 2 kick returns for touchdowns.

How about taking away the ACC’s automatic BCS berth this year and giving it to the Mountain West winner?

Did anyone but me notice that Joshua pitched the ball lots more than he kept. He only kept it mostly when he passed it or was going for a touchdown.
Teams with quick backs are gonna hurt us cause we seem to get caught up with the flow and down stay at home at position.
Kansas stopped our pitches with the corners coming up hard and tackling. Speaking of which how many times did GT player use their shoulders or head to try knock the players down. You only do that if they are running up the sideline to knock them out of bounds. THEY HAVE GOT TO LOCK UP on oppositing RBs or WRs.
In my opinion, Joshua had a good game throwing the ball. Problem seem to be nobody could catch it or run the right route. Good example: going for it, 4th and five, from THEIR 49 yd. line, he threw a pass about 7 yards to Hill on the right sideline. Problem is Hill was 25 yards down the field. We only needed 5 yards.
I have always been AGAINST “going for it” all the time. Inside their 20 maybe 2 yards or less, OK.
Old School, I have been a GT fan for almost 60 years. I have seen most all the games except when I was in the Air Force for 3 1/2 years and all I am saying is something is wrong whether it is the players (lack of talent?), coaches or preparation.
Same thing happened to GT as happened to South Fla. and Tennessee. Looked good til the other team scored a touchdown … then the real offense showed up on the opposing team.
When Kansas scored it was like someone turn a light on.

Did you check the Dawg blog today?
Richt has a much unhappier fan base than CPJ.
Not even close.

Could that be because their expectations are higher, and rightfully so. It is starting to really look ike GT football is what is always has been. Mediocre. Hiring Pau Johnson was absolutely the worst long range hire in college football history. Drad traded our future for short term success that really, at this level is nothing more than gimmick ball. The gigs up. The monumental flaws of Paul Johnson football are front and center now. Get rid of his fat, arrogant butt today before he can recruit us another #50 class. What quality recruit in his right mind wants to come here and abandon all hope of an NFL career, QBs..forget it. WRs..LMAO! Even RBs don’t want to come here that have NFL aspirations and leave with no preparation whatsoever for the nuances required at the next level. And what coach in his right mind would be stupid enough to follow a Paul Johnson team devoid of anything resembling real offensive football talent.

You have to admit it guys. GT75 has a point. GT’s talent level continues to regress under PJ. It’s obvious on both sides of the ball. Furthermore he needs to shut his mouth. He has done absolutely nothing yet to justify all the man love some of you guys show him. Winning last years ACC Championship against a 7-5 Clemson team and then getting his butt handed to him in embarrassing fashion proved what guys? When is he going to consistently beat even moderately good OOC teams? The way it looks now that may be never. Face it. trying to portray the ACC as anything but mediocrity is like putting lipstick and a pretty dress on a pig.

GT75 at this point I would have to agree with you. I was talking to my brother last night & he & I agree that this offense & the hiring of Groh are going to be the downfall of Tech football for years to come. Someone made a comment earlier “great teams sometimes fall hard”. Maybe so but we are not a great or even good team. Great teams like Alabama, Florida Ohio State don’t lose to vastly inferior competion. Great teams don’t choke in bowls. Great teams play win week in & week out. This is probably going to be a 6-6 year & a loss to Utah State in the Humanitarian bowl IF we get there.

I pulled up the sports section to read this from Kansas City. Believe me GT fans, we are as stunned as you are. After last week, we felt our year would be longer than yours. Now we are saying… “Who are those guys?”. We still do not know which team will show up each week. You have to understand a lot of our offense today was based on a yellow flag. Can’t live on that forever, but it sure boosted the effort today. Clearly Tech is better than they played Saturday. Keep the head up and the Buzz On.

Alabama lost to LOUISIANA MONROE three years ago! It was a turning point. Florida lost to a vastly inferior (on paper) Mississippi team. Southern California lost to a meddling Stanford when they hadn’t lost to the likes of Auburn or Ohio State. Sir, that argument does not stand the test. There’s not one team in the staged atmosphere of what is D-1 college football that can not have their butt handed to them by anyone if they don’t play the game correctly, smartly, and with respect that your opponent might just beat you…

Have these pro coaches every worked out for Tech. This defense looked exactly like the stuff Gailey use to put on the field. Maybe Paul bought into what we all buy into now days the hype. Groh’s resume looks impressive, but you start to see a pattern of a man going though the motions. His press conference sounded a lot like a Gailey press conference too. Johnson has been pretty good at cutting through the crap and I think he will figure this one out. This is the kind of stuff that make coaches like Spurrier legends, they see beyond the resumes and press clippings. They have their own minds. Even over at Alabama they don’t hire a resume they go out find a promising young assistant right out from under Georgia’s nose and make him into the resume. Both teams in this state need to find a dc on the raise not the back end of his career. Johnson will adjust.

The good (or at least hopeful)
We lost our first road game last year at Miami (an ACC game) and still won the ACC. Since the rest of the ACC sucks (has to be the worst BCS conference after yesterday’s debacles), I think we still have a chance.

1. CPJ really choked with the play calling. He panicked and went to the pass. We had plenty of time to run the ball and grind it out and score the last touchdown. In Nesbitt’s legs I trust, In Nesbitt’s arm I do not.

2. A new defensive scheme is going to take time to learn, but please teach the guys how to tackle. Way to many guys trying to make the highlight film “blow up” hit instead of wrapping your arms around the ball carrier and bringing him to the ground.

3. Move AA back to A back. He is not a B back, but he is a very good A back. Rotate in Lyons and Cox at B-back – they don’t mind getting beat up and they run hard.

4. Can we find someone that kick a ball into the endzone? I see high school guys kick it through the endzone every Friday night. I know the college kickoff is at the 30 (10 yards further back), but we can’t seem to even kick it past the 10 yd line.

5. We are in our 3rd year of CPJ recruits. Anyone wowed by any of his recruits?

6. Where is the speed option? That was one of our best plays the last two years and I have not seen it run this year.

I believe when one of the television announcers said toward the end of the game yesterday that this offense is not a “come from behind” offense, where the quarterback must drop back in the pocket and throw the ball when time is running out. No truer statement that I have heard. Nesbitt cannot pass and he proved once again yesterday that unless PJ can have a secondary passing attack, this team will always go down, even to Kansas who lost last week to a 1AA school in N. Dakota State. They depend solely upon the run, and when it’s not there or they need to come from behind, game over.

All I can say is that I am appreciative of Paul Johnson and his ability to bring Tech back out of despair, but I believe his ego is getting the best of him. He is going to run the same plays, same offense no matter what. Outside of the ACC, (and I love the wins against Vandy and Miss, State) but they are the bottom dwellers of the SEC, he has not won not ONE big out of conference game and it’s because Tech has NO passing attack. Look back, big losses to LSU, UGA, Iowa and now Kansas of all teams. When will he let his ego slide and start passing. I don’t understand it, unless Nesbitt just can’t pass? Johnson will win, yes, in the ACC but before long frustration will set in. Just look in Athens. Richt has 2 SEC championships, 3 BCS bowl games, 8 Top 20 rankings and a 91-27 record and his job is on the line. I hope Johnson wises up sooner than later. I would much rather Johnson and Groh fixing the problems this week than Gailey and Tenuta. If the poor performance continues throughout the season, then we should be concerned. Until then, our football program is in good hands and on the way up.(unlike the direction of the basketball program)

Now why is everyone getting so worked up about PJohnson not developing a passing game. He’s not dumb, but his QB is woeful throwing, and before he let’s his team get in disarray, he will work some new tricks into the game plan. As he goes forward, I think he’ll have the future QB’s pitching more to save the QB from so many hits, which truly affects the QB’s ability to throw.

One thing I disliked about coaching is the fact that “everybody’s a coach”… after the fact. Doesn’t matter if they ever played, much less coached. Just the way it is.

(1) At this level, motivation is ALL on the players as Bedford said. If you can’t motivate yourself by now, you don’t belong playing Division I football.

(2) GT did look confused at first by the Kansas up-tempo approach. Took too long to adjust. This IS on the coaches.

(3) Team play depends on muual respect and trust. This will happen with Coach Groh and the players from game-to-game. His age has nothing to do with it.

(4) Some of the play calling might be questionable but that should wait until Coach Johnson debriefs the game.

Everything else is just so much farting into the wind.

ON THE WAY UP, Always a Jacket! Puhleeze! Look how weak both our Oline and Dline are. Look at it. And Paul Johnson has HIS recruits now. So much for that. This program can’t afford another 2 or 3 years of that kind of recruiting. It’s plain as PJ’s chin. This program can’t afford this kind of talent drain and be viable in the near future. Paul Johnson’s recruiting, 5 play offense, and GT’s inability to go out and get REAL coaches is going to bite the entire program in the butt. We need a real coach with a real vision and the ability to get us there. Anyone that doesn’t see this train going in reverse just doesn’t want to.

[...] Georgia Tech just lost a non-conference game to Kansas, a seemingly punch-drunk program that was reeling from a defeat against North Dakota State, and doesn’t seem nearly ready for conference play (notwithstanding that the ACC didn’t exactly look like a super power this weekend). [...]

Butts Wagner

September 12th, 2010
12:21 pm

I don’t think anything is really wrong with the running game. Teams don’t respect the passing game and are just loading up the line of scrimmage to take away anything inside. Instead, GT is getting their 5 yds per running play on the outside. As we’ve been saying since sometime last year, if GT can just make 10 pass completions per game, the offense will be transformed from outsiders’ perceptions. If defenses have to honestly worry about passing plays on all downs, there will be so much more space for the running game to operate.

The story on defense is the same as last year. Not sure which is the problem that needs immediate fixing: Getting blown off the line of scrimmage or the missed tackles. I lean towards trying to get some control back at the line of scrimmage. Being able to block running lanes and getting some pressure on the quarterback is probably going to solve some of the missed tackling problems. I don’t think Groh is the problem. We had these problems before he came here.

Nate

+1 to Butts on all accounts! Anyone giving up hope on this team now isn’t a real Tech fan plain and simple. This is the same f-ing story that UGA fans said after the LSU, Miami, Iowa, and UGA losses. Teams lose games and CPJ will correct, period. This team will rebound and finish 8-4, 9-3 at best. Anyone who thinks we were better off with Gailey obviously never watched Tech play then. Even with acceptable talent the best Gailey could do was 8-4 and he would never win the ACC Championship, period. Grow a pair and support this team.

Ya know, I’ve stayed away from the boards for the past several years due to all of the idiots out there who don’t know a darn thing about football posting up crap. Here is the bottom line folks… not one team in the ACC outside of UNC has an OL or DL worth a crap. It showed today in every ACC game against a quality opponent. This conference is officially irrelevant.

CPJ is a good coach and knows X’s and O’s better than most in the business. However, his ego is what keeps him from joining the elite. I like Nesbitt… he’s a heck of an athlete but he is not a true dual threat QB. The Tech WR’s act like prima donna’s while the OL is undersized and couldn’t open a hole in the middle of a DL if Moses was there to help them part it. Don’t get me started on the RB’s… soft, soft, soft.

The defense reminds me of pop warner days when the kids are young and cannot properly cover their assignments. Kind of like having a six year old at cornerback that shoots in to the backfield on every play and the opponent runs a sweep to that side scoring a long TD four or five times.

The 3-4 defense is a joke unless you have a flippin’ nose tackle to man that middle. Tech obviously doesn’t have anyone capable of filling that position so we end up with the Twinkie defense… nice and firm on the outside but soft and mushy in the middle!

On the bright side… the mutts have the same problem!

One other thing… Georgia State got whooped yesterday as well so I guess that lends itself to the lack of folks taalking about a team from the ATL they can be proud of lol.

I said this last year at the end of the season when Tech announced that Al Groh would be the defense coach. I don’t get it, Virginia fired him because he couldn’t coach. The head coach is responsible for both Offense and Defense. He proved he couldn’t do neither. Then he comes in wanting a new scheme. Take a survey of coaches and they will all say DEFENSE Wins games. Paul Johnson needs to read the riot act to both Al Groh and Josh Nesbitt. In quoting Johnson back during the practices he said his Tech teams looks better than ever, and not concerned with Josh not being able to throw passes. Well Tech is one-dimensional, run run run, sounds like a little pig. You better wake up or you will have this first losing team under your command.

The Tech coaches are going to develop a backup plan when the option is not working. Nesbitt has to learn to effectively throw the ball and the WRs need to be able to catch otherwise it is going to be a very long season.

The defense is not good (at all) so the offense is going to have to score a lot of points in order to win games.

Bobby

Part of the problem is GT is not playing like a team. Josh, or Joshua or whatever name he is calling himself is trying to win the Heisman and simply denies handing off the ball when he should. There were at least a couple of times GT would have had major yardage if not a TD but Nesbitt simply kept the ball to himself. He needs to learn there are more people on the team than just him.
