Aaron Murray will give Georgia what it has been missing

It's Aaron Murray's show now, and Georgia will go as he goes this season. (Johnny Crawford/AJC)

ATHENS – Success in game one of season one shouldn’t be used as much of a barometer because, fact is, Georgia shouldn’t lose its opener to Louisiana-Lafayette. Blow this, and it will be apparent the Bulldogs’ problems are much bigger than a freshman quarterback.

But it’s easy to come away with a good feeling about Aaron Murray. Maybe it’s the fact he is more head than arm. Maybe it’s because he frequently exchanges text messages and studies game tapes of David Greene, who seemed almost robotically perfect as a college quarterback. Maybe it was just the way Murray reacted when Zach Mettenberger, who figured to be the other half of Georgia’s starting quarterback battle, was kicked off the team in April for sexual battery.

“It was upsetting to me and I talked to Zach for a little bit about it the day it happened,” Murray said. “But it made me step up more in terms of knowing I had to take that leadership role. Logan [Gray] had moved to receiver. Zach was gone. The young guys hadn’t come in yet.  I was really the only guy. It was my job. I had to step up and make sure I was doing all the right things.”

Freshman quarterbacks can make coaches want to cover their eyes. Mark Richt admitted his frustrations Tuesday with Matthew Stafford, noting that, “Guys with that kind of arm strength and that kind of ability can’t help themselves sometimes.” They spend too much time trying to be the super hero.

If the Dogs are successful this season, it will be because Murray plays more like Greene, who set an NCAA record with 42 wins (later surpassed by Colt McCoy’s 45) and an SEC record for 214 consecutive passes without an interception (that one still stands).

Improvement by the defense with new coordinator Todd Grantham obviously is important. So is exceedingly more resolve and discipline among players who have accounted for too many penalties on the field and too many arrests off of it.

But ultimately, a football team follows its quarterback. The Dogs won SEC titles with Greene and D.J. Shockley for a reason. Or two reasons: intelligence and leadership. Under Stafford, they won frequently but were sporadic at times for lack of the same.

When Richt was asked what he has learned from working with freshman quarterbacks, he said: “What I’ve learned is that you’re better off starting slow with a smaller package [of plays] and repping him over and over again. Hopefully you have success and you can grow as you go. Most of these guys were pretty good playmakers in high school. Sometimes they feel like they need to make a play, [like] they have to do something spectacular. [But] it’s not just ad-lib. You don’t have to be a hero.”

And then this: “Greene was really the only one who went through it unscathed, or close to unscathed. He was very disciplined in what he did. Stafford wanted to make plays. He was about doing great things. Guys with that kind of arm strength and that kind of ability can’t help themselves sometimes. If you look at Stafford, we struggled with him. At the end of [his freshman] year, when he quit turning it over, we won. We beat No. 5 Auburn. We beat Tech. We beat Virginia Tech. He just finally kept from trying to be that hero.”

Murray has watched several of Greene’s game tapes, as well as highlight packages of the same plays being run by Greene, Shockley and Stafford and himself ( in practice).

Murray on Greene: “He was always extremely smooth in everything he did. He was always so poised.”

His biggest challenge now? Staying calm. When asked if he gets nervous before starts, he said: “I wouldn’t say nervous. I’d say juiced up. It would be a good thing if I was on defense. I’d probably try to take someone’s head off.”

But he has learned ways to calm down, he said, listening to “some mellow, slow-jam country music. No Eminem or any rock.”

He’s going to make mistakes. As Richt said, “He’s going to be finding his way.” When he gets there, so will Georgia.

Murray may have the strongest arm of any QB in the SEC. He’ll put up huge numbers with his running game and great receivers. Look for the Dawgs to upset florida, win 11 and win the SEC! You heard it here first—dawgs back on top!!! Florida’s run is over!!!!!!!!

If Murray has a 4 td to int ratio, 13-1.
3.5 td to int ratio, 10-3.
3.0 td to int ratio, 9-4.
2.5 td to int ratio, 8-5.
2.0 td to int ratio, 7-6
1.5 td to int ratio, Richt and Bobo lose their jobs and are fired, deservingly so.

He’s the smartest guy on the whole team—an IQ of 79 and pulls a C- average. I’m the second smartest, but I don’t have classes so I have no average. Neither of us ever got arrested. The rest of the team kind of looks down on us for that. To them, we’re oddballs.

Also- Schultz’s assessment of UGA being “sporadic” under Stafford- sure he cost UGA some games as a freshman, but the reason UGA was “inconsistent” was often the defense. How many games you think Shockley or Greene win when UGA gives up 30 or even 40 points?

I look for Murray to throw 20-25 td’s, and just 5-7 int’s. Yes, he’ll throw some int’s, but needs to make sure he throws a lot more td’s than int’s.

Nick,

Let’s be honest… Joe Cox = JTIII.

Aaron Murray won the Florida High School Championship on a barely-healed broken leg. He’s a guy who has “it.”

Joe Cox never had “it.”

Also, Joe Cox played on a team where the defense was “coached” (I use the term loosely) by Soft Willie Martinez.

Aaron Murray doesn’t have that HUGE disadvantage.

Football is a team sport.

You don’t rely on any `1 position.

The other positions (WR/TE/RB/O-LINE/FB) and team units (DEFENSE & SPECIAL TEAMS) will more than make up for his learning curve.

Absolutely no problemo.

Let me ask you something.

In 100 years, how many SEC Championships did YOUR program win?

What’s that? ZERO? They won ZERO titles in 100 years?

YOUR HISTORY DIDN’T BEGIN IN 1991 YOU MULLET-HEADED, JORT-WEARING, IGNORANT, SMELLY REDNECK.

LOL at the whole minimization of what Stafford meant to the program…b/c look how great they did after the #1 NFL DRAFT PICK left. They had problems b/c Stafford was trying to be a hero? Ha, ha, I wonder if it occurred to anyone that they might have not had some of the embarassing losses to Tennesse and Alabama if anyone else on the team had stepped up and tried to be one. Richt sounds like Pete Carroll did when he was asked about Sanchez leaving early.

First off Bug Killer learn to count, Florida has played football for 104 years. Secondly it must be embarrassing that a team that was Miss State prior to 1991 has more National Titles than your team and is everything now you wish your team was. The best thing Murray has going for him is the absence of Willie “bend but don’t let them score too much” Martinez. UGA will be just fine defensively, and if we sputter offensively, then it’s time to replace Bobo with a legitimate SEC OC. (And, maybe a new headcoach for not recognizing this sooner).

I don’t see why Einsteindawg and others bang on Bobo so much. I like his play calling 10-1 over the “stop our run on 2 consecutive plays and we’ll throw it the rest of the game” pass happy style Richt called. Our offense was arguably the best it has ever been under Bobo in 2007-2008.
I know your instant response- “Well yeah…we Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno!” To which I respond- “Well last year we had Joe Cox and Richard Samuel (at RB for most of the year)”. Can’t have it both ways. If you have no QB and no RB, what do you want us to do, mail the ball?

I’m sorry fellow Dawg fans, but I hope Murray is much better than Greene. Watching the Dawgs during the Greene era was fun but painful we never got over the hump with the talent he was surrounded with. Greene’s arm was just like Matt Leinart’s & he thrived in Richt’s system. I hope this guy can put some zip on the ball & throw a few deep zingers , using some of this speed we have been recruiting. Go Gators. You are correct sir. Please remember uga wins a big one every 100 or so years. That’s it. One lousy championship since 1883. No wonder they are tender about anyone who has had spectacular success for 20 years. They cannot understand it.They can call you names, they can hurl meaningless insults but they have won one MNC since 1883. Try to imagine their shame when they realize Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Army, Cornell and Penn have won more that they have. It’s about time people realize that St. Stafford was not that great of a college quarterback. He was good, but to be great you have to win something tangible at the end of the regular season. Like a division, or conference title. He still hasn’t done that since high school.

Let’s hope Murray (and Richt) learned from other folks mistakes.

Why do we want this kid to be an, almost there guy ? We want a, get us over the hump, type guy ! How many Sears trophies did Greene win & what type of pro career did he have. QBs can run a system to perfection, but they must have that something extra too take it up a notch. I’m sick of just enjoying winning seasons, we need a guy who has that type of intangible to simply win the big games. Heck Murray is probably better than Bama’s QB, but who cares? When is Richt gonna start talkin about the big hardware ? The QB is an extension of his head coach.

@asheville dawg – A QB can not play defense. For all of Tebow’s accolades, don’t forget that in his HEISMAN year, Florida lost 4 games because their defense wasn’t very good. Give Stafford some of the defenses we had under BVG, and see how much he accomplishes.

How I rate our QB (5 outstanding; 3 avg; 0 just terrible): determination and drive to win, work, and improve (Tebow was a 5 star on this one)– I give Murray 4.75. Mind for the game and playbook–4.75. Arm strength–4. Quick release–5. Speed–3.75. Size –2. Vision (from tapes of HS and two G-days) 4.5, but this one remains to be seen at this level. Overall, I expect Murray to start strong and improve all year long. I see him competing for the Heisman at some point in his stay at UGA, but I see 2010 as our best chance to win the NC, imho. This team looks better than the ‘08 team that was rated #1 to me, but we will soon see!

Murray has the “It” factor.

He’s gonna end up with an passes to interceptions if around 2.5%.

He’s gonna throw @20x a game, 240 passes, 6 interceptions.

Just like all the great QB’s. Murray is a future Drew Brees.

Sounds like a good kid with his head screwed on right. He just needs to remember that he does not have to win games. He just has to manage them and not make the dumb mistakes that many first year QB’s often do. If he does, then the Dawgs have an excellent chance at being undefeated heading down to the WLOCP.

You seem to think it is an insult blog. You might give me a reason why I’m wrong, rather than demonstrating your poor spelling skills and lack of upbringing. UGA’s O line is made up of roughly the same guys we had in ‘08. They have grown up. The O line is actually the key to the offense imho. Position players count, but most people don’t understand how important the line is to the offense. So, I have reasons for my post.

Jeff the last couple of days you seem to be on some serious medication. No way this QB comes anywhere near the play of our top draft pick from two years ago. Does a one year hiatus qualify as missing? Why not write an article on what you believe a team that is yearly garnering top 10 recruiting classes should expect from the season with the current schedule? Is there a single team on the schedule other than Florida that should threaten us?? NO! This schedule would be a DREAM if only the team had been managed better the last couple of years. NO Bama, NO LSU, UT is no longer viable, OOC games non threatening even though Yech is once again interesting if only because I feel we our much more talented but balanced by facing a better coach. Would love to see a rational argument on how my view of my team is wrong. And please keep it modern (that is during the Saban and Myer tenures) not back when Richt first got here.

Zack,
Nice discussion. I don’t see Murray being anything like David Greene, but I think the rest of the team could be quite similar–great supporting cast. Murray showed the ability to shred defenses in HS, and in the first G Day he showed a similar spark. I think our receivers are very, very strong as a group. Most of the top ten could easily play on most teams in the country. The depth on O this year is tremendous, and I think Murray will figure it out quickly. The only disturbing development is how our line has been decimated with illness and injuries. I hope we gel and get back in shape in time for USC and ARK. If so, I say we have a special year coming in 10.

Too many folks get caught up in thinking NFL success somehow ties into the success they had at the collegiate level. Danny Wuerffel never made it in the pros but was one of the best Gators ever. Hershel really never set the NFL on fire but he sure did tear it up on Saturdays!

Look at the guys the NFL gets from the smaller programs. Jerry Rice is a good example. Brett Favre from Southern Miss. The Falcons have 2 players each from Montana and Villanova. But everything is so much hype these days with the recruiting sites. 8 of the Rivals 20 QBs from 2007 have transferred from their original schools, 2 of them twice (Cameron Newton and Willie Korn.) That’s right, the #5 Dual Threat QB is now at North Greenville, after bailing out from Clemson and Marshall. #3 Aaron Corp is now at Richmond. #4 Pro Style Mike Paulus is at William & Mary.

Greene’s ball fakes were the stuff of legends. Several times the cameramen didn’t know who had the ball until the receiver was streaking downfield for the score. No one better. And that takes a fairly level head to pull off. Here’s hoping Murray has tapped into his inner “Greene”.

Groundhog day on the Georgia blogs today. I wonder how many of these Dawg fans are putting their money where their mouth is and placing bets in Vegas on Georgia winning the SEC? Probably none of you, because deep down you know that its just another pre-season pipe dream. Its really laughable when you hear the same thing year after year. And to think that the excitement over this year is pretty much being dictated by the Georgia Tech and Texas A&M games at the end of last year. The Prosthetic Limb School for the Blind and Deaf could have put up a big number against either one of those Defenses.(and I’m a die hard Yellow Jacket) I mean, really, if we are the litmus test for how you’ll fare offensively this year then thats just plain ignorant.

Schultz, looks like you’re jumping on the bandwagon for the annual pre-season Georgia bulldog sunshine pump. Its not like you’ve never been there before. But I’d like to get what some of you all are smoking with a freshmen QB who hasn’t exactly gotten rave reviews in any of the scrimmages. We heard the same thing about Joe Cox last year and we all know how that turned out.. But I’m sure you’ll say that Murray is different and had all the accolades in high school. And then conveniently forget that you were telling everyone that would listen last year that Joe Cox was a stud in high school who never lost a game.

And don’t get me started on the defensive side of the ball. Do you really think Todd Grantham will make that big of a difference? You lost some serious talent to the NFL(albeit that never lived up to the hype at the college level), you’re installing a new defensive scheme, and at the current run rate I’m sure you’ll lose at least a couple for off the field transgressions. And you think these guys are going to be world beaters?

The stupidity of the Bulldog nation never ceases to amaze me. Case in point: look at the entries in this blog that say this is your year to beat Florida. Again, groundhog day. And you’re too stupid to realize it.

Georgia’s defense will likely not be as good as Bama’s was last season just yet. So the Georgia QB will need to score more than McElroy did, do you agree? I’d say the Georgia QB (Murray, Gray or Mason) needs to throw maybe 20 td’s as opposed to McElroy’s 17, and most importantly, give up no more than 5 interceptions if they want to have a big year.

@SKB Sure, we’ll talk smarts. You don’t have to convince me that Aaron Murray is bright. I know he is. For what it’s worth, GPA is more indicative of effort than intelligence. And assuming your SAT scores are accurate, 1200 today isn’t a 1200 of yesteryear. Regardless, you seem to have missed my point, which is that Schultz chose to take a cheap shot at Stafford’s intelligence, and did so by comparing him to Greene and Shockley. Both bright QBs in their own rights. However, a few minutes spent looking into comments made by every coach or instructor Stafford’s had since his Elite 11 performance would have shown him that smarts was not an issue. At all. Read what his Elite 11 instructors said about his “chalk talk” sessions. Multiple quotes from Richt are available re. the same. The Lions couldn’t stop raving about it, pre-draft. Hell, Shultz could have taken a really simple route and just compared the Wonderlic scores of Greene, Shock, and MS. I don’t think David and DJ’s score combined matched Matthew’s.

Georgia fans are Georgia fans because they live in a world where they praise the #1 pick in the draft because he was the #1 pick in the draft. That’s in lieu of recognizing from a football standpoint that the #1 pick in the draft never won anything in his tenure in Athens other than a certificate for time spent in bars downtown. They chew up Greene and Shockley just to stand in awe of the arm strength of Stafford. They overlook the stupid throws he made to get them beat to marvel at the 70 yard heave downfield that hit nothing but the turf cause he couldn’t throw a deep ball in the ocean. Part of the defenses problems other than Martinez was the fact the offense didn’t move the ball because of Staffords errant throws or worse to the opposition players. But hey, call me crazy, I’d rather have a steady hand on the tiller like Greene rather than a shaky hand on a coeds rear end downtown running my team. But I’m not a Georgia fan that thinks making the annual trip to Jax is a good think because I can get my drink on out of town and at the same time let the Gators bend us over and not even get the courtesy of a reach around.

As I said, I read the Georgia blogs but don’t come on a say a lot of negative things about the Dawgs. I just find the one poster (he was back on again as “Murray Rules!”) funny. I am sure he/she is a great Georgia fan….just a little unrealistic in his view of the experience and talent of one, John Brantley. Georgia is going to much, much improved this year….but I don’t think you can win the SEC with a talented RSFresh QB (Murray)….but you can win the SEC with a very talented RSJr QB (Brantley). Florida has simply re-loaded with a lot of very talented and fast players. Bama is going to have their hands full with Auburn…but Florida may be better than both of them on both sides of the ball this year. But it has to be proved on the field…and it all starts this Saturday…doesn’t it.

Before we get too far ahead thinking how good our O is going to be this year, remember, Miss State, Vandy, and FSU scored more on Tech’s D than we did. There are way too many questions to be answered before we start talking about how good we will be this year. Like, do we have the studs on D to stop a good O? Or, will Prince Richt have the jewels to stop all this extra curricular activity? Is Murray the golden child? Is Grantham, our 11th choice, really the man? The list could go on and on!

Jeff, You act like we won national titles with Greene and Stafford. We still got hammered by Florida like 49-10 with these guys. What’s missing is a physical offensive line. Each year Bobo and Richt, two former Qbs, more interested in showing fans how they outsmart the other team than simply wearing them down physically, make absolutely insane decisions regarding Uga’s offensive line. Rather than playing personnel that would allow them to physically dominate another team, they make personnel decisions that actually weaken the line. Then, year after year, they go to down to Jacksonville and get dominated on the line of scrimmage. Two of the three times we beat Florida, Robert Edwards, and Moreno scored three touchdowns ON THE GROUND. Richt and Bobo ignore history and go down there with the intent of getting in a shootout and get absolutely killed.Florida’s offensive line consists of Xavier Nixon and Marcus Gilbert at tackle, Carl Johnson and Maurice Hurt (from Milledgeville) at guards, and Mike Pouncey at center. Richt counters inredibly by moving Bean Anderson and Kiante Tripp to defense (after assuring Tripp that he would be a first round pick at offensive tackle). He then puts Trinton Sturdivant and Chris Burnette as backups, and after Florida beats us again will make some incredibly dumb statement like, “Well, here we are again.”! Richt and Bobo are too cocky to beat Florida. they have their own personnel agendas and its reflected in their decisions pertaining to the offensive line. Stafford and Moreno were 1st round picks and you’re still getting killed by Florida. Your problem is you offensive line.

Another classy post at 8:13 am. Unlike some of the dawgs you are grounded
in reality.

For those who think Murray is better than Brantley just don’t know any better.
Brantley is a 4th year junior and “mop up” duty is one heck of a lot more experience
than Murray, who has not throw a pass in competetion in 2 years. When Brantley played
after Tebow was hurt in the Kentucky game, he was 4-6 with 1 TD and no INT.

These are Brantley stats from 2 years of mop up duty; I think I’ll take his record against
the HS QB the dawgs are starting. I would bet even money, Murray has never even had a day in practice or your G-day game where he has completed 71% of his passes against your scout team.

At least Brantley’s mop up duty was against real opponents that were much better than the Georgia scout team.

Brantley

CMP ATT YDS CMP% YDS/A TD INT RAT
2008 36 48 410 75 8.54 7 0 194.9

2009 18 28 235 64.3 8.39 3 1 163

UGA this year vs where we were same time in 09

September 1st, 2010
9:30 am

This same time on eyar ago is as different as night and day.

We had the unknown Joe Cox and in our hearts, we knew that he could not be the one. We knew it prior to the Ok State game and when he came down with the flu, we knew that it might be a long day in Stillwater.

We also had not a clue in 09 about ou backs ……….Samuels and then, King. Ealey was not going to play………….. so our backs were King and Samuels and Thomas and the two fullbacks.

We knew that CWM could not coach up anything or anybody. Folks, we knew this in 2006,07,08, 09. CWM had to go ………….we knew this last September.

This year ………… we know that Murray is capable ………although he at this moment has no backup, beyond the Mason kid.
We know that D coach T G is a D coach …………..period. We know that his new subordinate coaches are highly regarded vs the two under CWM. These new D coaches have a college track record of success.

We also know that our 2010 safeties are far, far, far superior in attitude and athleticism to UGA’s now gonesafeties 3 and 9 Rambo, Williams 2 ) and Alec Ogeltree are actually great players. This promotes competition ……….something that was lacking in 09. Jakari Hamilton is my favorites.

We also know that we have a warm up opener vs last year’s opener.

Folks ……………get ready to rumble.

Go Dogs.

Murray is the man!

I've seen most of them

September 1st, 2010
10:13 am

David Green is in my opinion, as a UGA QB, the smoothest one in my 50 years of watching UGA football. He was not a runner, nor was he that 575 yd per game QB ( the system that he was in ) but he W-O-N and he was so smooth and yes, his fakes were some of the best that I have ever seen. Often times, the TV cameras were faked out.

The UT game up in Knoxville, he could have folded late after UT scored to recapture the lead ……….but he led the Dogs and he smoothly lofted the ball to his fullback ………TD and that was it. He was a red shirt Frosh too. He was so confident and calm ……….key points. The teammates pick up on this.

Murray needs to project a cool, calmness in the huddle. I want to see Aaron Murray calmer ………in the G Day game he was a bundle of nerves ……why? He knew that he would be either # 1 or #2 at that point ………. he was harried with his throws and his feet were jumpy. We all saw this.

Watch him in the first drive or two on Saturday and then see if he can dial it way back ………into tranquilty. The SC game will be his test. Columbia is going to be rough on him, I am afraid ………..unless he can gain some quiet confidence and learn to play smoothly ………like David Green.

I would love to see UGA at season’s end at 10-2 or 11-1 ………..but we do not have a solid QB back up yet, and our current running back situation bothers me greatly, having to do with Ealey.

D needs to attack and get the ball ………..so that UGA can score “easily.” This is the # 2 key beyond whether AM can play QB successfully.

Murray has more weapons at his disposal than Stafford or Greene had as freshman starters. He’s had more time in the system before his 1st start as well.We are not looking for him to be a hero this season all he needs to do is be smart with the ball and he should thrive.

No doubt Murray has the skills to compete. No doubt he has a great supporting cast. No telling how he will react to the pressure of the SEC in front of huge crowds. It’s easy to sit here and speculate but no one will know until Columbia. I’m nevrous as a bowl of jello.

As for the Murray vs Cox debate, Cox never lost a game in HS but couldn’t handle the pressure of big time football and he was a senior. I wish the young man (Murray) the best. I would prefer a good manager of the game than a superstar, aka, David Greene, anyday over a Stafford type.

Man the Dawgs need a good season ! ! ! So do I, it’s been a while….

Mr. Shultz- so Stafford was too good to win an SEC championship??? HIs arm was to good, his ability too good??? Makes absolutely no sense. It’s hard to win knowing you are going to have to put up damn near 40 pts. in order to get that win! How many “playmakers” surrounded Stafford? How many dropped passes did we see in his 3 years there? I’m not talking about double coverd dropped passes. I’m talking noone around said receiver for 5-10 yards. Ridiculous!!!!

The responsiblity of wasting his 3 years there goes soley on Richt’s head. 1) Keeping his inept friend as D- coordinator about 2 years too long 2) Failing to surround Stafford with playmakers to help him out.

The 3 years that STafford and Moreno was a complete waste of 2 top notch talent guys and as a dawgs fan is extememly disappointing.

As a dedicated Tech fan, I noticed your discussion on QB’s. Having graduated Tech in ‘76, I’ve seen a lot of GA QB’s…..In MY opinion, the ONE that always concerned me the most, was David Greene. I’ll tip my hat to him–he was a winner…nothing fancy, not the greatest arm, not the greatest speed, but, he was cerebral, he came to play, and he could beat you. I would take him anyday, over Zeir, Schockley, Belue, Cox, or Stafford. I still can see Morgan Burnett taking one of Stafford’s for a Pick6! As for Murray, he’s got to prove himself on the field.

Face it Dawg fans – when the entire team ran onto the field vs. UF in 2008, the karma gods looked down and decided that enough was enough. Not like you’ve ever had karma on your side in this 20 year rivalry (where your record is a robust 3-17 vs. the Gators).

Instead of getting arrested in the offseason, what if the whole team spent copious amounts of time building houses with Habitat or volunteering at the soup kitchen? Perhaps the karma gods would relinquish. But until then…enjoy another decade of lopsided losses from the boys down south. 5-25 over a 30 year period ain’t bad.
