Demaryius Thomas, Jonathan Dwyer and Morgan Burnett helped lead Georgia Tech to the ACC championship, but they're all in the NFL now. (Johnny Crawford/AJC)
Here’s another sneak peek at a column that will appear in print in this Sunday’s special AJC College Football Section. The 34-page section will preview Georgia State, Georgia Tech and UGA seasons, the SEC and ACC, top games, Heisman candidates and more. Today, we look at Georgia Tech’s schedule, predicting the Yellow Jackets’ season, game by game. Previously posted: Mark Richt feels Georgia is poised for a bounce-back season.
Paul Johnson has won more games in his first two seasons than any Georgia Tech coach in history. It’s just the ending that he’s having trouble with. Despite going 20-7 with an ACC title, Johnson’s Yellow Jackets have been thumped in consecutive bowl games by LSU (38-3 in the Chick-fil-A) and Iowa (24-14 in the Orange).
Endings also could be the issue this season. With the way the schedule lays out, it’s conceivable the Jackets will win their first eight games before hitting a wall (at Virginia Tech, Miami and at Georgia among the last four opponents). The other question: Will losing four top players — Demaryius Thomas, Jonathan Dwyer, Derrick Morgan, Morgan Burnett — to the NFL have a significant impact?
Here we go . . .
Sept. 4, South Carolina State: Smaller programs schedule these games to give their players the “experience” of playing a BCS conference school. Wonder how often the trip (and the money) actually seemed worth it. South Carolina State is 20-5 in the last two seasons but was slammed by Clemson, 54-0, in 2008 and South Carolina, 38-14, last season. This won’t be any different. Prediction: Jackets win.
Sept. 11, at Kansas: The Jackets defeated Kansas in the 1947 Orange Bowl. There shouldn’t be much of a hangover. This match-up looked more daunting years ago when the Jayhawks went 12-1 in 2007, but they slid to 5-7 last year, leading to the exit of the combustible Mark Mangino (also accused of verbal abuse of players). New coach Turner Gill will do a nice job. But he might’ve best summed things up when asked who the fastest guy was during spring practice: “Me.” Prediction: Jackets win.
Sept. 18, at North Carolina: Coach Butch Davis annually has one of the nation’s top defensive teams again but that hasn’t done much for the bottom line. He’s 11-13 in the three ACC seasons. Optimism is high in Chapel Hill, but another anemic offense could leave the Heels in the Meineke Car Care Bowl again. They just can’t score enough to beat the Jackets. Prediction: Jackets win.
Sept. 25, North Carolina State: Tom O’Brien has done worst than Davis in his three seasons (16-21, 9-15). The difference: He has beaten UNC three straight seasons. That will buy you some love (and time) in Raleigh. Besides, he inherited a kind of a mess from Chuck Amato. It says here the Wolfpack will be better than some people think this season, but they’re too weak up front defensively to stop Tech. Prediction: Jackets win.
Oct 2, at Wake Forest: It took a gutsy call in overtime – a one-yard run by quarterback Joshua Nesbitt on fourth down, which set up a touchdown run – for Tech to escape with a win over Wake last season. But as good a coach as Jim Grobe is, the Demon Deacons’ roster is devoid of experience and talent. Their win totals the last four seasons: 11-9-8-5. It won’t take overtime this season. Prediction: Jackets win.
Oct. 9, Virginia: There’s an upside for Al Groh to getting fired at Virginia. OK, so he went 5-11 in the ACC in his last two seasons, and recruiting dropped off a cliff. But now he gets to punch Virginia in the nose from the other sideline. The Cavaliers are bad, really bad. They’ll likely finish behind Duke in the Coastal Division. New coach Mike London won at the FCS level (Richmond), but he has little to work with now. Prediction: Jackets win.
Oct. 16, Middle Tennessee State: This is what Paul Johnson doesn’t want to do before the Middle Tennessee State game: Phone Ralph Friedgen for advice. Maryland has lost to the Blue Raiders the last two seasons. MTSU has a nice program for the Sun Belt. But if the Jackets struggle here, forget about the difficult final stretch because it won’t matter. This needs to be a tuneup game. Prediction: Jackets win.
Oct. 23, at Clemson: The Jackets won two meetings last season (regular season and ACC title game) by a total of eight points. Nonetheless, coach Dabo Swinney’s contract was bumped up from $800,000 to $1.8 million. The extra million should ease the pain of losing C.J. Spiller to the NFL but it won’t help the team. Don’t be surprised if the Tigers take a step back, although having quarterback Kyle Parker back (after he declined to sign a baseball contract with Colorado) helps. This likely will be a pivotal game for both teams in the ACC. Prediction: Jackets win.
Nov. 4, at Virginia Tech: The Hokies aren’t imploding. But they went 27-5 (.844) in their first four ACC seasons and 11-5 (.687) in the last two, so clearly the conference has caught up to them. Consecutive losses to Tech and North Carolina (at home) were telling. But this season they get the Jackets in Blacksburg and following a bye week following the Duke game, and an offense led by quarterback Tyrod Taylor and running backs Ryan Williams and Darren Evans (out last year with a torn ACL) should be potent. Prediction: Jackets lose.
Nov. 13, Miami: The Hurricanes looked like a BCS bowl team at times last season (wins over Oklahoma and Georgia Tech) but a young team looking for an identity at others (losses to North Carolina and Clemson and a 31-7 blowout to Virginia Tech). But Miami, led by QB Jacory Harris and a solid and aggressive defense, is solid, even if coach Randy Shannon inexplicably hasn’t completely won over the fan base. This could be your ACC champion. Prediction: Jackets lose.
Nov. 20, Duke: Don’t take this as a suggestion Duke is going to the ACC title game, but coach David Cutcliffe has won almost as many games in the last two seasons (nine) than the Duke program had won in the previous eight (10). With touted sophomore quarterback Sean Renfree, the Blue Devils will be just good enough to scare you. But no – no upset here. Prediction: Jackets win.
Nov. 27, at Georgia: Paul Johnson pulled off an upset “Between the Hedges” in year one and then, at 10-1, laid an egg at home against the 6-5 Bulldogs last season. So predictions seem futile. But here goes: The game goes to the home team. Dogs’ defense improves enough under Todd Grantham to slow the option and Georgia wins a low-scoring game. Prediction: Jackets lose.

NO WAY that GT beats Clemson in Death Valley this season. GT has had their number since the butt-whipping a few years ago when ESPN College GameDay was at Clemson, but the Tigers have much more talent on the roster. It’s the Jimmys and the Joes, not the x’s and the o’s…

Robert Hall,
why can’t your program just accept your impending victory of the Fulmer Cup with dignity and pride? Oh that’s right…if you had any, you wouldn’t have recruited all of those thugs to begin with. Keep telling people how you are superior, and how your academics are so hard, and that if you don’t aspire to be a socially awkward engineer that you fail at life. The recruits will take note, and allwho wish to have the Downtown Atlanta experience will go to State.

LOL Georgia State football? That’s going to work well…just like Georgia State basketball is such a big hit. Seriously…you reside right in downtown in a black city and no one wants to come to your basketball games. It’s not going to be any better in football. At best, you end up like Tulane – playing in a pro city and an empty dome against teams nobody cares about.

I hope we do well this year. I am sick and tired of losing. We don’t get the players like other schools, and it makes me sick. I think we will do well because our schedule is easy. South Carolina State, Kansas, UNC, NC State, Wake, Virginia, Middle Tenn State, and Clemson. We have a very easy schedule. We should be fine. I mean if we had to play a real schedule we would be hurting. I think PJ has things under control. GOOOO TECH

Jeff, 9-3 is acceptable the way you laid it out. My thoughts are slightly different. If GT runs off the first 8 games, I doubt we’d finish up 1-3. Momentum is a beast. Nesbitt won’t allow 8 straight wins to crash and burn like that. This is his chance to put his name next to Joe Ham’s. 8-0 start, and we are going BCS again.

I don’t think we will lose both of those ACC games. I admit, before I was not wanting to see the tough games. But with PJ at the helm, bring on, the stiffer the competition the better!
All you SEC folks talking smack about the ACC. Well looks like we got some teams now that may be pretty good. Time will tell.
And uh te fact that Ga State will have game sin the ga Dome does not propel their program to the heights of the BCS conferences. You my firend are wrong, Tech football will become more relevant. Especially if there is ever a playoff system for college football! UGA may have beaten Tech quite a bit since I’ve been a fan (’90). If that happens UGA does not want to see Tech in a football playoff!

Actually, most strength of schedule predictions for this season have Tech’s schedule being tougher than UGA’s (sic). And it would seem that’s the general perception, too. VT needs magic or luck on defense this year. They lost all but 2 13-game starters, 2/3 of all the combined starts on defense overall. #1 backups at DT & LB are 1-letter guys. I think Boise State will take them in Landover. 20 out of 22 starters including Kellen More and 91% of all lettermen back. Tyrod Taylor is either great, or not very good. Best Passer Rating in the ACC (0.8 points ahead of Nesbitt). 56% overall completion rate; 4 games under 50%, 3 games over 70%, none from 60-69%. Hand it to Williams, and had it to Evans. I don’t think they’ll play TB at the same time.
Miami is monstrous on the OL, avg. 318 lbs. Also the backups. All told, 10 are 300+, 6 are 315+ and 3 are 330+. But can they move? The DL is large, too. But, Jacory Harris is 5th in the returning ACC QB Passer Ratings, and he threw 17 INTs last year. Miami has the ACC’s 2nd toughest OOC schedule behind FSU. The flakiest team in the ACC, I say.
North Carolina has a very good defense. They have had in the last 2 years a bad passing game. TJ Yates’ Passer Rating is 115.4. That is lower than anybody in the returning QBs of the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, PAC-10 and the SEC except for Mike Hartline of Kentucky and the combined pair that QB’d Vanderbilt last year. The average Passer Rating of those 5 conferences’ returning QBs is 132.1 Yates threw for 14 TDs and 15 INTs in 2009.
Georgia has too many unknowns to pick at this point. They lost 1,000 lbs. of DTs to the NFL. They won’t need as many in the 3-4, but how will that work? Can’t be worse? Neither can Georgia Tech’s. QB? Murray may emulate Greg McElroy, which would be good. If he gets hurt, uh-oh. Hutson Mason’s courses this fall should be electives: Playbook 101, 102 and 103.

I think Tech will have a great season and Johnson is a good coach. I really don’t see Tech having a lot of Bowl wins with him. His system can sneak up on a team whan they only have a week to break down film. Give a team 3 or 4 weeks before a bowl and you can kind of see what happens.

T, I honestly don’t know that I buy the whole give a team a few weeks to scheme for him and they can stop them critique. If that’s the case, shouldn’t ACC coaches who’ve seen this offense multiple times be coming up with fail-proof plans to stop this offense?
The scheming wasn’t the problem against LSU. The execution was the problem. The team screwed up almost everything they tried to do. Chalk it up to nerves, I don’t know. But the execution was terrible, and the most brilliant scheme in the world would be rendered useless by poor execution.
And Iowa doesn’t get nearly enough respect for how they played last season. They were one of the best defenses in the country. As another poster said, if their QB hadn’t gotten hurt, they might’ve gone undefeated.

UGA – if they can keep their players out of jail should finish 8-4 or 9-3 – will lose to Florida again, USC, AU and GT. They just might choke again against UT.

I just don’t see how Tech could take 2/3 over VT, MIA and UGa during the first year of the offense yet drop all three this year, it just doesn’t seem reasonable. I’m pretty sure some questions on the recieving corps and the defense will be cleared up by then.

This is a very reasonable prediction. I see the VT, UM, Uga, Climpson, and UNC games as all being toss ups. And maybe you throw either the NC State or Kansas game into the toss up pile as well. That’s 6 definite wins, with 6 toss ups, with the definition of toss up being a 50% chance, and that’s a 9-3 season. I don’t think GT is going worse than 8-4. And I want to say the ceiling is 12-0, but 10-2 is a more realistic ceiling. For GT, it comes down to line play. And the 5 big games are the teams that have at least one side of the ball that can dominate at the line. We saw Uga destroy GT’s defense last year. We saw UM destroy GT on both sides last year. Climpson was dominant at times last year. VT is VT, they will provide a tough game, no matter what the names on the jerseys are. And we all know about the hype surrounding UNC’s defense. If I were a betting man, I’d go 9-3 for GT(I think that’s the over).

Anyone who doesn’t think Georgia State has the potential to be relevant in the next five to ten years doesn’t is goingto be very surprised. PJ had better get them on the schedule now, because certainly won’t want to play teh Panthers five years from now. Georgia Southern has been begging Tech for a game to help them out financially — Tech is too scared to play them. GSU has been very appreciative of UGA putting them on the schedule every four years — some of those games were tough. I have to admit I envy Tech’s cupcake schedule. If only UGA played in the ACC or Big 10. In the last decade we have only one loss to both of those conferences, and that was the fluke against Tech when we started fumbling kick-offs and trying to push running backs out of bounds — and that’s playing against the likes of GA Tech, Clemson, FSU, VT, Mich ST, Wisconsin, Purdue, Ohio State. The ACC is irrelevant as a conference these days.

They’ll get run out of town by either VT or Miami, or both. They’ll “almost” beat Georgia and then lose yet another bowl game. A classic Georgia Tech football season.

Until johnson sees the light and adds a genuine passing element to the office I think every season will go much the same with a strong start and a weak finish. I think his system works largely because teams only have a week to prepare for it but as time goes by there will be more film for the defensive coordinators to dissect. And Bowl games will by definition be problematic because Tech will always be playing a quality oppontent with ample time to prepare. I love my jackets but I don’t see the triple option alone continuing to deliver wins over the long haul.

Steve–
Think about your post for a second. How long has Johnson been coaching? Do you think there is any lack whatsoever of film? There is decades of film on this type of offense.
The preparation excuse is about the 7th or 8th excuse on why the T.O “will not work”, despite the fact it has already worked many, many times. The bowl game excuse that other morons are using is even sillier, when did Tech last win a game under their anemic pro-set? 2005?
Tech could have ran a UF style shotgun offense but their OL did not match up with at all with LSU or Iowa’s. If you get dominated on the LOS, any offense will sputter.

Get a clue, Jeff. Your precious Paul Johnson is a master of the triple option offense, but he’s a terrible recruiter. Look at how GT’s recruiting classes have tanked since he took over. He has won the first two years using talented 4-star players like Nesbitt, Dwyer, and Morgan. Look at their current class. Not a single 4-star on it.

I personally have a biochemistry degree from UGA and a graduate degree and am very successful. I make more than any engineer I know. I do realize we have many fans that are not Alumni, but it is the state school. It is wrong to criticize those fans for liking UGA. Have you ever been to a Florida game?? There fan base is very similar to ours. Plenty of alumni, but plenty of “country folk” as well. Also, I know plenty of people who are Tech fans and never attended one class at Tech. Miami has got to find some coaching before they are what they want to be. They fall off the map towards the end of the year too, but not to top 10 teams like Tech. Tech gets clipped by Va. Tech in a barn burner. I am thinking our new defensive coach may bring something to this party but need to see some games under his belt before I predict a win for Ga. Tech. You spend that much time in the same state watching an arch rival you pick up a few pointers on how to beat them. The offense will always show up for Tech. If you want to beat Tech watch how Georgia figured it out last year. Their game plan was repeated by Iowa in the Orange Bowl. They really had no choice but were even more successful, with ball control and did more on defense than even Georgia. Ball possession beats Tech and Georgia came within one dropped passed by a first round draft choice wide open of even losing that game, and Tech was in that Iowa game till the forth quarter. This is why PJ fired his defensive coach, and now has one of the best in the business. If that defensive which is very talented shows up this team is better than last year’s and last year’s wasn’t bad.

instead of on the US and Mexican border.
That will stop the demand for drugs and the cartels biggest
source of income and it will dry up the cartels.

Yes, I hate on y’all who hate on UGA on our blogs but I see a very good season in the making at Tech. Get over the debacle in Miami against Iowa and let’s have a slugfest in Athens after T’giving. Always cheer for y’all unless you’re playing us even against other SEC opponents. Good luck, guys.

For all Dawg Fans
Wanted y’all to know we’re now BETA testing the new PETA approved robotic Dawg mascot. So far he whines, runs around in circles 3 times and pees all over himself. We need your input on a 4th trick. Would you rather see him
a. Hump the leg of the nearest UGA cheerleader
b. Run under a bus or
c. Explode into a million pieces?

Your predictions are to commonly easy. Most everyone in the country who doesn’t study teams closely can and do make the same predictions. I think it would be very tough to beat the dawgs again in athens. I will give you credit there. I think too many people are hyping up Miami which happens every year. “Miami’s Back” Don’t we hear this every year? Can we not say that maybe great athletes need a good coach at Miami? Same for FSU. They make a coaching change and everyone is saying that they are ACC champs. People forget that we would have beat VT two years ago if not for the bad call late in the game. That was back when our option was doing to well. We dominated them last year and will this year. VT will always have a good defense but there offense stinks as always. Your predictions are very mediocre.

How exactly will we lose to the mutts Jeff? We own them!! They are one of the worst teams in the country year in and year out. We have 5 Highsman candidates and they have how many, negative 3? Give me a break. Johnson will never lose to the mutts from the farm.

Dear UGA fans,
I will start to take you seriously when you can point out facts to the same old blanket statements you make every year. The new ones are CPJ will fail with his own recruits and GT will fail if a team has time to prepare. There is no evidence to support this, yet some of you love to look stupid and ramble on about it. I know you will point out the bowl games, and I will point out that LSU had a defense that won the NC and Iowa was the #4 defense in the land. Oh and let’s not forget GTs lack of depth the last two seasons and using converted d-lineman and RBs on the offensive line. If GT is so irrelevant then why oh why do so many of you spend so much time obsessing on GT blogs?

Saint Simons, get a new tag line. The one you use is boring and meaningless. What are you going to do next year after G.T. whips your boring butt. Ruining the state is not a great accomplishment. Oh, I’m sorry you said run not ruining. Make sure you lock the doors to your trailer tonight.
As with most of you bloggers on the Tech site, you never went to school in Athens. Pathetic losers to Florida and of late to Kentucky. I would learn to keep my mouth shut until after the season unfolds.
Saint Simon’s where did you really go to school? All of us want to know where stupid is taught.

I just can’t believe there are UGA fans on here continuing to perpetuate the myth that Chan Gailey was a great recruiter and CPJ is a terrible one. Chan had one good recruiting class, 2007, and it still wasn’t as highly ranked as every UGA recruiting class over the last ten years. CPJ’s two recruiting classes so far (09, 10) have been nationally ranked in the high 30s to low 40s, which is better than every Chan class except 2007. Plus I maintain, that CPJ’s classes are always going to be under-ranked becuase he isn’t even trying to recruit 4-star QBs, OLs or RBs. They don’t fit the system.
