Georgia coach Mark Richt believes the Dogs can avoid some of the problems that plagued recent teams. (Curtis Compton/AJC)
Here’s a sneak peek at a column that will appear in print in this Sunday’s special AJC College Football Section. The 34-page section will preview Georgia State, Georgia Tech and UGA seasons, the SEC and ACC, top games, Heisman candidates and more.
Nine years ago, Mark Richt lost his first SEC game as a head coach (to South Carolina) and started 4-3 in a conference that generally doesn’t allow for long honeymoon periods, at least not outside of Vanderbilt.
It wasn’t the usual backdrop for what would happen in the next four years. Richt went 44-9 overall and 25-7 in the SEC. He won two conference titles at a school that hadn’t won one since 1982. He won a Sugar Bowl.
What has occurred since at Georgia is less a market correction than it is a changing landscape. Think of the SEC as a boulevard of resort hotels. Richt built what seemed like Xanadu in 2002. The problem came when Les Miles, Florida and Alabama built more lavish structures down the street.
LSU, Florida and Alabama didn’t just win SEC championships. They won national championships — the last four, in fact. Over that same period, Richt went 20-12 in the SEC without making it to the conference title game once.
Xanadu began to look like a slightly weathered Marriott.
Which brings us to 2010. Georgia is not crumbling and Richt is not on the firing line. There has, however, been a leveling off in Athens. To deny that would be like a hotel owner ignoring the other properties that are stealing his business.
The Dogs are somewhere back in the vapor trail left by Florida and Alabama. Richt’s not in denial — otherwise he wouldn’t have fired three assistant coaches after going 8-5 (4-4) last season.
The question now: Is this the bounce-back year? Possibly. Richt may never have a better chance to quiet critics.
The potential pitfalls of starting a redshirt freshman quarterback, Aaron Murray, should be minimized by an experienced offensive line and two key weapons for Murray to feed: A.J. Green and Washaun Ealey. The defense should be significantly improved under Todd Grantham (who is switching to a 3-4).
The schedule? Instead of opening against Oklahoma State in Stillwater, as in 2009, the Bulldogs open against Louisiana-Lafayette in Athens. They don’t play Alabama. They don’t play LSU. They do play Florida, but it would be surprising if the Gators didn’t feel the loss of nine starters in the first five rounds of the NFL draft, including: Tim Tebow, Joe Haden, Maurkice Pouncey, Carlos Dunlap and the serial eye-gouger, Brandon Spikes.
There’s also this: Richt just feels better about his team. Granted, all coaches like their team before opening kickoff, but Richt’s confidence is rooted in something legitimate: strength and stability on his offensive line.
“I like our maturity on offense,” he said. “You see it especially up front, even the non-glamour positions if you want to throw in the fullbacks.
“There’s something about when your offensive linemen are your sages, your veterans, your leaders. When they’re running it, things tend to go well. They’re pretty grounded. They’re not glamorous. They’re really the most unselfish guys on the team. ”
Glamour seldom is Georgia’s problem. It seldom gets more glamorous than Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno in the same backfield. But that was in 2008, and a pre-season No. 1 team wound up getting drilled by Alabama and Florida, losing at home to Georgia Tech and settling for the Capital One Bowl.
Georgia’s problems have been in other areas: a lack of discipline, sometimes passion, sometimes just a seeming willingness to punch the opponent in the mouth.
Experience and the arrival of Grantham, who’s far more fiery than Martinez, should help in those areas. But fire starts at the top and Richt needs to light one with his team.
This season could start well — very well. If the Dogs can get past early tests against South Carolina and Arkansas, they could be 8-0 going to Jacksonville. But Richt knows better than to play “the schedule game.”
“I used to do it more than I do now,” he said. “What year was it – Stafford’s freshman year [2006]? I kind of did it that year a little bit. We didn’t have a great season. Everything looked different than it was. So I don’t do that any more.”
The Dogs were coming off Richt’s second SEC title that year but they went 4-4 in the conference in 2006. The landscape changed. Richt, going into his 10th season, realized Georgia required some renovation.
Now we find out what the place looks like.

I second Not Disappointed. Do you really expect the guy to think they’re going to be mediocre at best this season, much less say it? Not that that’s necessarily what I think is their potential, but, while a coach knows his team better than anyone else does, he’s hardly the best person to give an unbiased view of their potential. Only time will tell for both UGA (sic) and Tech.

They are, too. They are going to win 10 in the regular season and one of those may very well come in Jacksonville. They are at least three wins better than last year if they 1.) cut down on turnovers, 2.) have more takeaways and 3.) stop somebody. All three of those will surely happen.

Jeff-
Excellent article. I wouldn’t call finishing #2 in 2007, and #10 in 2008 a big problem. Sure last year, should have won the Kent & LSU games. Should have beaten Tenn. Should have gone 10-3, or 11-2, minimum. It was an off-year.
Problems are not penalties (Florida is consistenly among college football’s worst) not turnovers (The nation’s best at not giving the ball away rarely win more Championships (Navy/Air Force, Army). The best teams play aggressive, they arn’t afraid to make mistakes.
Problems have been strategy:
1- Too much passing in 1st 7 games, need to have a heavy run strategy, NEVER abandon the run game, under ANY circumstances or you become 1 dimensional
2- Not getting playmakers like AJ Green, Ealey, Olson enough touches the way Florida and Alabama uses their playmakers. Rotating in too many mediocre players to “keep everybody fresh”. The rotation system has been utterly ridculous. Play your best players, keep the mediocre players ff the field.
3- Willie’s read and react defensive strategy was too passive, and people had finally caught on to what Georgia was doing defensively and Georgia had become too predictible. Offense became predictable too, Georgia became the easiest team to intercept a ball from, just very easy to read.

Disagree a bit about the fire having to come from the top. I like a HC with a measured approach and a DC with a fiery temperment ala Richt and Van Gorder, Dooley and Russell, Bowden and Andrews, etc. That being said, you still have to have a top guy that’s not going to put up with crap.

Nice job Jeff in pointing out the ‘reasons’ Richt feels good about this team. A solid offensive line, a great receiver, awesome tight ends, talented running backs, an aggressive defense with new coaches, and a little easier schedule gives plenty of reasons to be optimistic.

In 2001/2002, Richt bounced back and finished #3. In 2006/2007, he bounced back and finished #2. He will bounceback again and finish in the top 3, likely #1.

A fun thing is to compare Richt’s 1st 9 seasons to Bear Bryant’s or Nick Saban’s.
Richt had 6 top 10 finishes, Bear and Saban 1 top 10 finish.
Richt won .770 of his games, Bear & Saban won a lot less.
Richt had 2 top 3 finishes, Bear had 1 & Saban had 0.

Here’s hoping the defense raises the intensity level a couple of notches, and the offense is able to feed off of that. I’m ready to see some of our special athletes make game-changing plays the way I see other teams’ special athletes doing. If our O-line can stay healthy we can be successful. What I take from this is that he is actually giving us a glimpse of his expectations. In years past, he would use coach-speak before the season started and it was hard to tell what his expectations were. At least this year, he is revealing some enthusiasm about the direction of the team. I’m not sure someone on the “hot seat” would want to fan the flame if he knew people may be disappointed in the product they put on the field.
I believe the new defensive staff will ignite some of the fire that the prior defensive regime was lacking since BVG left. At least I hope so. In reading what the players are saying, they are excited, which gets me excited.

Are you just stupid? Saban may not have had but 1 top 10 finish his first 9 years head coaching cause most of those years were spent at Toledo and Mich. state which has had all of 2 10 win seasons in its entire history(1 of them by Saban).
As to bear bryant having only 1 top 10 finish in his first 10 seasons that may or may not be true. What is true is that he coached at Kentucky where Adolph Rupp is king and bball is king.
Let me know when Richt wins 2 ncs as Saban has done or especially when he has won 6 ncs as bear bryant did.

I read somewhere that the 2009 Dawgs had a minus 16 turnover rate. Even if every other factor is even (and I believe there’s lots of areas of improvement with this year’s team) what if this year’s rate is zero? What a huge difference that would make. Or if we had a PLUS 5 or 10?
That one stat alone could mean the difference between an also ran season and a legitimate title contender.

counting on a bounce back season with a “jittery” and short QB does not sense make. The best thing to happen to the dogs would be SC losing upwards of 6 to 10 players for living basically rent free at a Columbia hotel…so the dogs may win that game if those players are suspended. If that doesn’t happen, an 0-2 SEC start is a real possibility…if that happens, look for the wheels to fall off on the way back to Shreveport.

Look at the blowouts UGA has received by inferior teams. I am tired of being spanked by Tenn and Kentucky and Vandy. CMR embarassed us by black outs and uniform changes.
CMR does not judge talent very well, He is just not a good fundamental coach.

If he’s not a a good judge of talent, then we recruit poorly, and have little talent to work with, not squander. If he’s a good judge of talent, then we recruit well. If we don’t perform, then you could perhaps make an argument that he squanders talent.

UGA will have a better record in 2010 than in 2009. LSU has been replaced by MSU and they do not have a tough early OOC game like Ok State – there’s 2 L’s replaced by 2 W’s for a start.
To be a better team, and to beat their tougher opponents, they need to improve discipline and turnover differential. With the coaching changes, I expect improvements in discipline on D but they are a year away from a run at an SEC championship.
UGA goes 10-2 or 9-3.

Richt will bounce back again to a probable 10 win season. He always bounces back after a bad season. The only hitch will be how quickly a freshman qb can grow up. But as I’ve said before I think a strong O-line can anchor an entire team and that is Georgia’s strength this year.
Our 08 team did not have that much talent on paper. A very weak jr and senior class in terms of numbers due to the earlier probation but we rode a strong O-line all the way to the seccg. I can see Georgia doing similarly well. Gotta get past those pesky gators though.

Seriously wrong on both counts.
Serious Dawg fans need to start organizing and demanding that Richt be fired. Otherwise, sports writers will be asking the same question this time a year from now.
Richt represents mediocrity. Saban and Meyer represent excellence and championships. Richt simply isn’t in their class, nor will he ever be. Richt would have to be incredibly lucky to win the division, and the odds against him winning the SEC championship would be at least 50:1.
Those are the simple facts, and there’s no amount of enthusiasm or cheerleading or Top 5 recruiting classes that can get around it.

CMR is an average coach that gets excellent talent. Average coach plus excellent talent = 8 to 10 wins per year. Great coach plus great talent = NC’s (more than one). Just look around the SEC. The talent level is very close between Ga, Fl, Al, Aub, Lsu, and Tn(though they have been down some…and still kicked Ga’s ssa last year). Who has more than one NC?
Can’t wait…SEC is the best!

It is all false bravado. The qb situation is worse for the Dawgs than 2006, when your freshman was at least top qb in nation. This year’s choices are a small (in stature) freshman who wets his pants anytime a scrimmage is held in Sandford Stadium and a 2 star true freshman that no other big time football program wanted. Most likely losses to at least SC, Ark, UF, Aub, GT and one more from Kentucky, Miss Staten or Tenn. UGA is a program in decline and everyone but Dawg fans knows it. Before you UGA fans throw out the WE BEAT TECH retort realize it only masks the fact that you have become a second tier team in your own conference.

Well the last 4 years Richt has done his winning & Losing with his players and friends as coaches. 10-10 in the SEC East ain’t going to keep him his job. DawginLex, do you an any real UGA fans feel the program has not peaked under CMR. LSU, AL and UF all have coaches that have won the NC since CMR has been at UGA. UGA has looked poorly coached the last two years, and you can not blame all of that on the fired DC. This is the 3 year since 2006 that the Dawgs appear to have a poorly thought out plan at the QB position. That is a big reason you are on the decline. Your OL is not good enough to run the ball on 8,9 man fronts which you will see.

A few things that would be huge improvements from last year:
1- Murray needs to run if the nearest defensive back is 15 yards away.
2-Throw more slant passes over the middle, especially to OrsonCharles.
3- Rely on Blair Walsh more. Play to get into field goal range and if you get more, great.
4- Learn how not to let every one in the stadium know that a screen pass is coming next.

No OL is good enough to run the ball all the time on 8 and 9 man fronts.
Richt has been 50/50 run/pass for 9 years and it should stay that way.
I realize we are going to play it close to the vest in 2010, at least early on. As Murray matures, the playbook will be expanded. Right now, punting and avoiding turnovers in a tight game(which SC will be)will be an improvement from 2009. Just break even in turnover margin and that is a 16 turnover upgrade.

Someone mentioned Richt wins 8-10 games PER year. Actually, he averages 10 wins PER year. The two 8 win seasons were the low points, Richt averages almost 10.5 wins the other 7 years. 9 years at one school is an eternity in the coaching profession, so we have a pretty good idea of UGA tendencies under Mark Richt.
Concerning the talent level, yes, UGA does recruit better than most, BUT over the last five years LSU and Florida have out-talented the Dogs, and Bama has over the past three. It is a matter of record that Richt has not hauled in the number of elite 5* players those three schools have. I think you will see that begin to change this February.
The evening out of the talent with the Floridas and Bamas, plus the new defensive coaches, is why I am bullish on the Dogs.

Your criticism of CMR is not fair. I graduated from UGA in 1976 and back when you and I were at UGA , you recruited a great running back and let him run the ball 30+ times a game. All the good SEC teams mainly ran the ball , ran out the clock and a last minute field goal won the game for somebody. Now to compete on a national level the SEC teams had to develop a passing game along with a great running game. CMR is just trying to keep up with the other great SEC programs.

I believe Spikes only did the eye thing one time. Take your shots…but at least do it honestly….would you!
By the way….Spikes is in the NFL….and RSfr Jelani Jenkins (one of the top LB recruits in the country) and Soph. Joe Bostic (a dynamic player) are both top of the line middle linebackers. Jelani is 6′0 and 225 and runs a 4.4 in the 40…and hits like a tank. So Spikes will not be missed much in the middle….but opposing teams will still feel like they got their eyes altered two or three times in each game…by either Jelani or Joe. Florida sends one to the NFL….and will soon send another from the same position.

If they can win 8 playing @Oklahoma St., South Carolina, @Arkansas, Arizona St., LSU, @UT, Florida, Auburn, @Ga Tech and Texas A&M in a bowl last year, then why not 10 this year?
They won those 8 with Joe Cox at QB (servicable but no Stafford for sure), no running game for 1st half of the season, a bad defensive scheme, and one of the worst turnover ratios in CFB.
There is no reason to expect 9+ wins this year in the regular season alone.

Here is my view: good to great offensive line; backs, receivers and tight ends. QB unknown at this point, but I think he will start strong and get better all year. Injuries will be critical at key positions. Defense – shaping up in all areas with the big unknown being the line. I don’t know what to think there, but I’m inclined to think the coaches will make it happen up front. Kicking game also good to great. Turnovers and penalties much better this year. Toughest games: UF and Auburn. Likely to be tough games: GT, SC, ARK and MSU. Wait to see on UT and UK to see how they handle changes. I say we gel and run the table–2010, the year of the Dawg. Obviously, it is going to take everything going right for a change! Injuries or weakness in any of the key spots would cause problems, and we could lose a couple of games and be a great team–we have some great teams on the schedule.

One more point: as Boling alluded, the injuries in the line gave the backups more 1st team reps and could actually help our depth up front! That is why SC and ARK are critical–our first team might not be in great shape until a month into the season, or even a little more.

Hey Beast from the East…I guess the gators never talk trash or grab their crotches or do the gator chomp in the faces of other players, no they wouldn’t do that…Hey lets agree that alot unclassy things take place way too often on the football field…i will give you that the dawgs storming the field was not a smart move, and they paid for it with the penalties and the never ending publicity…but to try and hurt another player, intentionally, well i don’t think they are apples and apples….but what happened with the eye gouge fortunately did become serious, and Spikes has probably paid somewhat of a price from the respect side for that…Have a good night..will talk later…

Beast from the East…..
Thanks for asking. Retirement is good. Fishing is not. Way too much rain. I haven’t even walked down Clearwater Beach to Caladesi Island yet. The wife has me busy with a lot of “Honey Does” and trips to here and there.
Dawgfan….
Spikes made a serious mistake in doing what he did that day. Meyer sat him down for one game for it. Other than that, Brandon Spikes was a total class act while he was at Florida (but you can think and post whatever you want about him)….he was a good student, an excellent leader, and played four years at Florida. The coach of the NE Patriots currently thinks very highly of his leadership skills and his football talent.
Hunker down….
Coxson, the freshman WR, transferred to Maryland. He was listed #12 of 12 receivers and was going to be redshirted. He was also a lot slower than advertised and probably wasn’t going to play a lot at Florida with the other freshman WR talent on campus…Dunkley, Patton, Ali, Dunbar (who has been the best of all), and one other kid I can’t think of right now.
Jordan Haden (Joe’s brother), was fourth on the depth chart and no where near the player his older brother was. He left school (he said his missed his family back home on the east coast) and has not announced if he is transferring to another school or not. I don’t think he liked college football or the Florida hot weather. It is funny that he quit because his other brother (a running back) just announced that he is transferring from Boston College to play at Florida.
Someone posted on the internet that Ronald Powell and Dominique Easley had quit the team (because they supposedly did not come to practice on Tuesday). Well, they didn’t quit. Easley had permission to miss practice to work out a personal problem that had nothing to do with football and was back at practice on Wednesday and is in the DL rotation already. Powell was at practice on Tuesday but left early because he was frustrated (it is said that he had an attitude and was not working hard in practice or in the weight room and some of the vets on the team got on him big time during practice and he got pissed and left the field. The coaches called him in later and talked to him and he was also back at practice on Wednesday and Meyer said he had his best practice yet. He needed an attidue adjustment like many high school prima donnas have when they come to college and they are no longer the best player on the field (that tells you a little bit about the talent on the Gator team when a “Ronald Powell” becomes just another player on the Gator practice field).
ATL Dawg…..Spikes did a “punk” think….but he was about as far from being a “punk” as anyone could be. As I said, he was a big time leader and a class act during his 4-year stay in Gainesville…except for that one unfortunate incident. And now he is a class act in New England for the Patriots. Great kid. Great football player. Period.

Come on! Folks, it took the great Saban a full year to get his defense up to speed – don’t expect Grantham to do it quicker. There will be growing pains especially when playing teams with top notch OCs, SC, AR, UF, UT, GT. They will exploit Grantham’s new, young defense.
Give the D a year to get dominate, move Bobo back to QB coach, get a NFL-calibur OC, and UGA will at least be UF’s and Bama’s equal again.

You Dawg fans who keep repeating “30-24″ like a mantra enjoy yourselves all you want. The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.
UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.
Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is practically worthless.
Jan Kemp exposed the crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or self-discipline.
The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against thug-athletes, it’s usually no contest.
It’s pretty pathetic to see UGA fans who typically have never been within miles of a college classroom and who live or die with UGA’s weekly results on the football field.
So keep on posting your “30-24″ all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old job back at the Waffle House before your unemployment checks stop coming.

Here’s the latest:
Georgia running back Washuan Ealey, the Bulldogs’ leading rusher last season, is in the Clarke County Jail this morning after being arrested by university police on misdemeanor charges of hit and run of a parked vehicle and driving on a suspended license.
Ealey was driving a gold Chevrolet Impala that hit a parked truck in the East Deck at 3:19 a.m. today, university police chief Jimmy Williamson told the Athens Banner-Herald.
Parking service employees saw the incident and stopped Ealey and asked him to wait for police, but Ealey said he couldn’t and left the scene, Williamson said.
“Our officers arrived on the scene ran the car and it came back to an individual not the individual that was arrested,” Williamson said. “We went to the room of that individual and he told us he had not been driving a car, that his roommate had been driving the car and he gave us the name of Washaun Ealey.”
Police talked to Ealey, who told them details about the accident. It was then determined he was driving on a suspended license.
Williamson said a police incident report won’t be ready today and he did not identify the owner of the car Ealey was driving. The truck was unoccupied and the damage is believed be to minor, according to Williamson.
Ealey was booked into the Clarke County Jail at 5:22 a.m., according to the Clarke County Sheriff’s website and had not posted $3,000 in bonds as of 9:03 a.m.
The arrest of Ealey bring the number of Georgia players arrested this year to EIGHT- all since March.
Another running back Dontavius Jackson, decided to transfer after he was suspended six games following his July 10 arrest on six misdemeanors, including driving under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of an accident and underage possession of alcohol.
Tavarres King , a returning starter at receiver, is suspended for the Sept. 4 opener against Louisiana-Lafayette after being charged with underage possession of alcohol in that same incident.
Quarterback Zach Mettenberger, outside linebacker Montez Robinson and punter Trent Dittmer were dismissed from the team after their arrests.

Ealey SHOULD be suspended for at least the first game, and it doesn’t make any damn difference what DaRick Rogers or anybody at Notre Dame might have done. We’re GEORGIA and we should hold ourselves to higher standards than lesser programs. Richt coddling kids is part of the problem we have now, and that lack of discipline manifests itself in games. (Look at how penalized we were last year…and weren’t most of them STUPID penalties, often at the very worst time possible?)
If Richt doesn’t suspend Ealey, then he’s every bit as candy ass as Tom Osborne was with Lawrence Phillips.
Coach Richt needs to act like he’s GOT a pair.

I think Aaron Murray and the play of the defense in the new 3-4 scheme will be very pleasant surprises from all the accounts I’ve read. If Aaron stays healthy and things break right in Columbia, Dawgs should be undefeated heading into Florida. The games against Auburn and KY, both of which are away, will be difficult, and I would not be surprised to see the dawgs slip up in one especially if they’re coming off a big win against the water lizards. With a schedule that is much more favorable this year than last and a defense that can’t be any worse than it’s been the last two years, the dawgs have a very realistic chance of making it to the SECCG this year. 11- 1 regular season is very realistic!

People, everything happens in cycles. There have been times over the last 30 years that Georgia has been the dominant team in the SEC… there have also been times that label has applied to LSU, Florida, Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, etc. Wouldn’t you rather be in those cycles than be, say, Ole Miss or Arkansas or South Carolina, who are NEVER relevant in the SEC championship picture?
It’s just a fact that the SEC has the best competition in the NCAA, bar none. It’s natural that a team will have ebbs and flows — even the MOST talented teams in the country over the last 10 years (USC, Florida, LSU, Ohio State, etc.) have not gone undefeated in a decade, going 120-0 and winning 10 straight titles. In high-stakes football, even 1 or 2 losses can knock you from the national title picture.
Put it this way: I would MUCH rather Georgia be where it is now, with high expectations, than it was 10-20 years ago. Now, a 10-win season can be a disappointment (see 2008). In the past, a 10-win season was the highlight of the decade (see 1992 or 1997).
One more point to make: don’t you think that almost ANY team in the nation would LOVE to be ranked in the top 20, average 10 wins a season, be one of the top 3 or 4 teams in its league, and be in the national picture EVERY YEAR? I think too many Georgia fans got spoiled on 2002 or 2005 and thought it would be like that every year, but that’s a lot to ask. Remember, even mighty Alabama was very pedestrian in 2008. And Georgia Tech fans would KILL for Georgia’s success under Mark Richt… it wasn’t too long ago that they were actually HAPPY with 7-4 and a trip to the Emerald Bowl or Humanitarian Bowl.
It only takes a year or two to bounce back to power in the SEC. Give the recruiting class of 2010 and 2011 time to take hold, and give Grantham a shot at working with this defense. I think Georgia has a lot of success in its future in the upcoming seasons.

Every team goes through cyclical periods of winning and losing, its the nature of the game. The Dawgs will ultimately rise to the top of the SEC East again. It may be this year or it may be 5 years from now, but it will happen. With that said, the Dawgs must take pressure off of Murray, limit penalties, turnovers, and quite simply stop people. The DC change and the outstanding O-line could prove critics wrong about a mediocre season being in store for the Dawgs. Perhaps we now have the formula needed to surpass the Gators in the SEC East standings. Only time will tell and I think that the Dawgs are fielding a contending team this year. We just have to hit on all cylinders going into games 2 & 3, and keep up the momentum throughout the rest of the season.

I am happy about our D D scheme and staff of D coaches. I am happy about Aaron Murray as QB.
I am happy that Wooten, King and Durdne and Troupe are on the receiving crew, along with Marvelous Marvin Brown. I am happy about our tight ends. I am happy about our new crew of solid safeties, like Hamilton and Rambo and Sanders and Ogletree.
I am very happy that we have a professional AD ………..one that is a man that knows the ins and outs of big time college athletics and a family man. I am happy that he will be evaluating them all, starting with ladies basketball head coach, the Diamond Dogs coach and the Lady Gym Dogs coaches.

This team should beat South Carolina and Arkansas. When you look at both rosters and compare the two Georgia on paper is better. the true question about this team will be can they cause more turnovers than they make, can they cut down on the crucial penalties, and can they be a little more creative on offense? they need more three receiver sets and more crossing routes to get the better receivers on the field at the same time. I understand the pro set mentality but you have to keep the other defense guessing. Also, the goal line offense has to be effective. More touchdowns than field goals. I am ready to watch them this year. Finally, I feel when we get up 31-0 against Lafyette, Hutson Mason should get some snaps. Do not red shirt this guy. We have to start getting our QBs some game experience. Let the guy play a few series in case something happens to Murray.

Richt never said anything last year about feeling we were going to be good. I really think he knew last year was not going to be our greatest season. What really concerns me is that he has not been saying anything about Aaron Murray. With redshirt freshman David Greene, he used to say that he feels he is mature beyond his years. Not a word being said about Murray, which is definitely a concern.

Yeah 69dog, I for one miss those days, and Richt had better find those days if he wants to remain in Athens. I saw the article in the AJC about five players to watch. They keep talking about our tailbacks being pass protectors. I remember the days when our tailbacks were tailbacks. Richt needs to let that big, bad OL that we have been hearing about for the last two years worry about pass protecting. It says that King has improved, well in pass protect mode. King is not a UGA caliber tailback. Richt will more than likely make the wrong decision about who gets the handoff. I know Ealey screwed up, but he will suffer the punishment for it. That being said, Richt had also better suck it up and give Ealey the majority of the carries if he wants to win. Ealey needs to get the ball early and often against SC, in order to get it going for the season. South Carolina’s Gamecocks, and the Arkansas Razorbacks are hardly our biggest worries, and if our ground game is not 100% better this year it will be a long season for fans and Alum, and a very long toasty season for CMR. The money people are very anxious, for a lack of a better word, and Damon Evans is gone. I hope Richt makes the right decisions.

Jeff, you and Bradley are to Georgia football what Tucker and King are not, objective. A marque player like Washun Ealey is involved in a hit and run and Tucker and King tighten up more than a new coat of paint on Uga VIII’s doghouse. Bill you and Tim need to grow a pair. Tucker and King are good at dishing it out when it’s a Florida or GT player but retreat to “lock-down” mode when a Dawg player get’s in trouble. C’mon boys, if your gonna play with the Floridas and Bamas of the world, your going to have to be able to dish it out, and take it.

To the folks saying, “Well, what do you expect a head coach to say, that his team sucks?” Well, there are some head coaches who do exactly that, either as a motivational ploy or as a matter of style. For example, Vince Dooley always used to praise his opponents in the press — by game time, he might’ve had you convinced that there was no way Herschel could gain any yards on that stout East Louisiana Tech defense. (This, of course, was the reason that Dooley teams rarely lost to inferior opponents.)
And just a week or so ago, Urban Meyer said “We’re not very good” about his own team. What does such a remark do? It fires up the team to prove the coach wrong.
Now that’s not Richt’s style, and probably never will be, but there are plenty of coaches who won’t be publicly optimistic about their teams’ chances — even if they don’t completely mean what they’re saying.

Man looking at the delusion on this board, it is little wonder that UGA fans are at the coaches and players throats by the FLA game every year.
I am just glad that the Saints don’t have to run up against UGA this year, they may not survive.
To inject a little sanity and possibly save some of the UGA fans hurting themselves.
QB is the least of your concerns, the UGA defense ranked 11th in the SEC last season. You lost 3 NFL DLs to be replaced by a OL and two upperclassmen subs from last season along with losing 3 DBs who are going to be replaced by upperclassmen journeymen and talk of two freshmen playing significant playing time at safety. And the worst for last, your LB corp which was atrocious last season is going to manned by two “starters” who have not practiced a day in the spring or fall camps yet could NOT not beat out by any of the pending ALL-AMERICAN backups?
UGA defense is going to be uglier than last year which is NOT going to be fixed by hiring the Defensive Line coach from the Cowboys who has had only two years of actual DC experience?? But not to worry, UGA fans are sure that the DC was really the defensive mastermind from this position coach position?
Save yourself some distress and get a freaking clue about UGA this season. 11-1, sure, good lord.

Columbus Dawg, I thank you for the comments you made. I couldn’t agree more. Is it any wonder that UGA cannot attract a great running back? Come to UGA and block! Rival schools use this every day against UGA. I must tell you, if I had a son who is a great running back, as much as I love UGA, I would tell him he is crazy to go to UGA and block for the hapless offense that UGA uses.
In addition, rival schools are using the lack of disipline against UGA.

This is the first serious article you’ve written in over a year. It’s fair and balanced. The UGA program like a hotel on the Monopoly board has been taken over by newer properties on the block. However, as you accurately point out Richt went out and got himself a new Architect on D and some new interior designers and personally I think those changes are going to pay huge dividends and put us in a position to compete against the Belagio’s of the world.
Everyone needs to temper their expectations. Starting a RS Freshman at QB is riskier than starting a 5th year senior and look how that turned out last year. Takeaways are going to be the difference in 2010. Our D is going to get the ball a lot more than it did last year. When you combine that important stat with no directional kick-offs, you’ve got a formula for success.
We’ll see what happens. I’m cautiously optimistic.

Looks like the Preacha Man’s Koolaid is strating to work its majic on the Dawgnation.
A couple of sober thoughts:
1. Hope is not a method.
2. This season rests on the shoulders of MARK RICHT. Not the QB, DC, RB or anybody else.
At the end of the season, the BulldawgNation will judge MARK RICHT fairly based on his success or failure. The Koolaid will ensure he will get the benefit of any doubt. But if he is a failure, HE IS OFF THE ISLAND FOLKS!

Jeff,
Many Dawg fans STILL think they have the type of program that can just bounce back and reload and I hate to be the barer of bad news, but they don’t! Over the last 4 seasons, UGA has only finished the regular season with 10 wins once( 2007). 2006: 8-4, 2008: 9-3, and 2009:7-5. UGA is what it is, an 8-9 win program that is capable of winning 10 games from time to time. They are the Atlanta Braves of the SEC, GOOD but not great. And truth be told, they have been that way for the vast majority of their history.
Richt might be Saban and Meyer’s equal in terms of X’s and O’s. But when it comes to building and maintaining a program, Saban and Meyer are far superior to Richt! The proof is in the pudding. Meyer and Saban’s coordinators are head coach material. Dan Mullen, Charlie Strong, Jimbo Fisher, Will Muschamp…ALL are head coaches now or will be soon. And ALL were a part of National Title teams, so they know what it takes to get there. Richt’s assistants a FAR inferior. Even Van Gorder is nothing more than a great assistant. Richt was a hungry coach at one point with a lot to prove. But he has gotten complacent and his judgment in personnel absolutely sticks. Dawg fans have given him some leeway because of the kind of person he is, but if this team tanks it this year, it could be Richt’s last.

In summary, you’re full of it. Has Urban Meyer or Nick Saban coached at their respective schools for 10 years, like Richt? Let’s see how they fare over the long haul. Nick Saban has never stayed in one coaching job more than 5 years before he packs his bags and moves on. Urban Cryer gets to select from the second richest state in the country for HS talent. Now that Miami and FSU are back in the picture, let’s see how well he does. Oh, and Florida doesn’t have Tebow…
If you examine Richt’s overall Win vs. Loss record at UGA, there aren’t many programs that wouldn’t die to have similar success. We live in a “What have you done for me lately” society. Just look at the scrutiny Les Miles is under and the guy won a MNC three years ago.
