Mark Richt makes a splash on Sportscenter (fully clothed) (UPDATED)

Here's Richt doing his dive in a bathing suit in 2008. This year, he wore khakis.

Richt did his dive wearing a swimsuit in 2008. This year he wore khakis.

(UPDATE: ESPN had Richt on this morning. The interview, with more shots of the fully-clothed dive, is below.)

Somehow, I just can’t see Nick Saban doing this on ESPN’s “Alabama: All-Access.”

When rain canceled Georgia’s practice the other day, coach Mark Richt took his team to the Ramsey Center for a little swimming and diving. The trip to the pool has become an annual tradition, as has Richt’s back dive off the 10-meter platform.

The difference on Monday was Richt didn’t have his bathing suit with him since the event was unplanned, and presumably he didn’t want to borrow an official Bulldogs Speedo. So he jumped in with his clothes on. Check the video below.

It turns out this made the “top plays” segment on Sportscenter. (Thanks to @UGABugKiller via Twitter for the tip.)

“This is the first year he did the dive with his clothes on,” said associate athletic director Claude Felton. “He has said he learned to do the dive when he was growing up in Boca Raton. He would jump off a bridge.”

Postscript: Richt, Felton said, was impressed that his clothes “held up” and didn’t have to be trashed after the dive.

Not sure who to credit for this video but found it on the internet.

Richt speaks on ESPN’s “First Take.”

UGAy Loses Again

I knew it was a big blow losing that recruit to FSU, but attempting suicide? Well, I guess brain dead would be an immense improvement in the mental capacity of a UGAy grad.

Someone was right earlier. He is bonding with his players. Every year he likes to go back to his days at Miami when he was drunk and diving off bridges. His players relate to that, they just dive in bars downtown Athens. All is good at UGA until the season starts. Hot seat? Not Yet. If he doesn’t beat Florida and Tennessee this year, he’s never going to.

Seriously, you guys are running this story again. Every year, it’s the same. Wow, Coach Richt can dive off a diving board . . . and live. He must be a great coach and that means UGA will win it all. Really -

Just kind of odd that Ole Miss has an indoor practice facility…and UGA doesn’t… just saying.

Sounds fun but it also sounds like the air of seriousness is not quite there. While richt is diving saban and meyer are either coaching, studying film, or doing something during the crucial august preseason to advance their teams. Seriousness wins championships. Goofing off gets you independence bowl appearances.

PMC,

That’s been noted before. Its a downright embarrassment we don’t have an indoor practice facility but Ole Miss does. Embarrassing! So do Alabama and Auburn.

That looks like it would really mess up his hair. What’s next? Roasting marshmellows around the camp fire while singing songs? Is he a football coach or a boy scout leader?

The success or failure of the UGA season will have NOTHING to do with this diving display by Coach Richt! He is simply having fun with his team. If they were hanging out at the pool every day instead of practicing it would be different! Good Lord, do you think that CUM and CNS NEVER have fun with their teams? Do you think today’s athletes would go to ALA or FLA if they never had any fun at those schools? You think they practice all the time at those schools? Everyone gets so many hours to practice and every team uses those hours. I know that some of you disagree, but FOOTBALL IS NOT LIFE OR DEATH!!! Coach Richt is a man with BALANCE in his life, both on and off the football field and apparently on a diving board as well!

Do you techies really run around campus all week playing “humans and zombies”?

This kid joined all those Asian clubs trying to meet some girls, since those are the only decent looking women on campus…especially the ones that are wearing veils.

Both of the American women on Tech’s campus look like refugees from fat camp.

Who wants a balanced coach. I want a coach driven to obsession to win with tunnel vision on the championship who expects nothing less from his players. Kombiah will not win championships, but “take a chill pill” if you are satisfied with the bulldog record the past couple of years and if you are cool with doing no better than coming in 2nd in the SEC, then, hey, I think you have your guy.

Good luck this season.

Simpledawg – TCU could win the ACC. Despite being left out of the old SWC move to the Big XII they have built up to a respectable program (outside of a BCS conference). Out of all the non-BCS schools over the past 5 years, they have the most impressive wins (over BCS opponents, IMO). It would be really nice to see them join the SEC in the future.

If only he could dive into a Championship I’d be much happier! He seems like he’d be a fun coach to have. He let’s the kids party it up. He loves to be filmed taking about partying it up. He let’s the players go swimming rather than practice. Sounds like a blast!!! Unfortunately most of us would rather see Championships and let the players have their fun after the season!!! Get with it Richt!

By all accounts CMR is a nice man and good human being and I don’t know why anyone would attack his character. His players seems to like him very much and he is obviously a good recruiter. That is where the problems lie, however, he recruits top 10 talent to UGA year in and year out and then underachieves. The D-coordinator took the fall last year, and I’d expect Mike Bobo to take the fall this year, but at some point I think it becomes obvious that Richt is not a top flight coach. As a Tech fan, I’ll take our HC, OC, and DC over UGA’s any day. For those that don’t know, Paul Johnson is both HC and OC. And despite what UGA fans believe, Al Groh is light years ahead of Todd Grantham (UGA’s 3rd choice, fired from his last DC job) in terms of coaching and defensive schemeing. Al Groh will do more with GT’s 3-star recruits in year 1 than Grantham will do with UGA’s 4-star recruits.

Coach Richt has been at UGA 9 years and finished in the top 10 in the country 6 times. A 769% winning percentage in the best conference in college football. Coach Richt is among the top 5 coaches in in the country in winning percentage. One sup par season and he suddenly mediocre? No back to back years out of the top 10. 8 – 1 against Gt. He is a great coach and a great man. We are very fortunate. The haters out there are mostly Tech fans who got beat with there best team ever against one of Georgia’s worst. Certainly coach Richts worse team.

The VERY second that Alabama or Florida or Georgia Tech did something like this, the very “fans” on our UGA blog that want to tell us we will never win another game in the history of our program because we had a team bonding day at the pool, will all of a sudden think it’s a pretty cool thing.

You morons act like ONLY the team that won the National Championship the previous year can have fun. You act only the fans of the National Championship team is allowed to be proud of their team/school/alma matter. College Football is so much more than HAVING to win the crystal football in order to justify having passion. You ididots are like the Grinch on Christmas morning, looking down at Whoville, wondering why on Earth they are still celebrating despite not having shiney new toys and stockings full of candy.

You idiots that come on the DAWG blog to tell us we are not allowed to love our Dawgs…. i simply feel sorry for you and the way you obsess over perfection. I pitty you for not understanding what a true Fall Saturday in the South is all about.

GO DAWGS!!!! 16 short days until 93K PASSIONATE fans will cram Sanford.

When you have top 10 recruiting classes every year for ten years, shouldn’t you finish in the top 10 virtually every year? And if you only finish in the top ten 60% over a longer period of time wouldn’t you say that your coaching isn’t matching your recruiting. Clearly UGA’s coaching staff is strong on recruiting, although I could easily argue that UGA’s location in Georgia (football hotbed), status as Georgia’s land grant university, and memebership in the SEC give it built in advantages that less than 10 schools in the country would share.

Bob Sacamano…..

LIGHTNING canceled practice. Look back on Monday and there were tons of popup THINDERshowers all over northeastern Georgia.

And don’t be blind. 2 VERY short years ago, Alabama was suffering one of the worst decades of football in their existance. Don’t act like they have been a dominate force since the beginning of time.
