Auburn may get an ‘04 ‘title’ yet (and who’s USC’s cover boy?)

All 156 All-Americans, 11 (or 10) national titles and 7 (or 6) Heismans? Lane Kiffin did that.

All 156 All-Americans, 11 (or 10) national titles and 7 (or 6) Heismans? Lane Kiffin did that.

Before we get into this media guide cover — and thanks to devoted reader/serial e-mailer Andy Rosenberg for the tip — there is a movement afoot to appease Auburn in its national title claim for the 2004 season.

Rewind: Auburn, USC and Oklahoma all went undefeated in the regular season in 2004, but only two could go to the BCS title game. So Auburn was snubbed, went on to win the Sugar Bowl and finish 13-0, and coach Tommy Tuberville and Tiger Nation screamed injustice. The Trojans won the championship game but, as you might have heard, just got put into NCAA timeout and now must vacate that win (among others).

Now comes this: The executive director of the Football Writers Association of America said at the Big 12 Conference’s preview that the organization may take away USC’s 2004 title and award it to Auburn. “I wouldn’t say we’re definitely going to do that, but it’s a possibility,” Steve Richardson said. “As we survey the scene, we have an opportunity to consider for the first time of vacating, in the modern era, a national championship.” (It’s worth noting Tuberville now coaches in the Big 12, at Texas Tech.)

The FWAA honor might be all Auburn gets. The BCS has said it won’t make its decision until after USC’s appeals to the NCAA are complete. Even then, it probably will just vacate the championship. The Associated Press will not change its final rankings, even though Auburn finished second to USC.

Meanwhile, the poor USC sports information department doesn’t know what to do. Note the hysterical media guide cover. It references 11 national championships (including 2004). But the original cover that listed seven Heisman Trophy winners now has been changed to six. This is kind of bizarre, given that while the school made a big show of returning Reggie Bush’s Heisman Trophy, the Heisman Trust hasn’t done anything yet and won’t make a decision until after the appeals.

In summary, Bush, whose family lived in a home rent free, is not recognized by the school, but O.J. Simpson, who killed — excuse me, may have killed — two people is still embraced by USC.

Now, about the guy on the cover. I’m not sure who that is. But given the way those numbers are super imposed over his proud stance, I guess he had something to do with 11 national championships, 31 bowl victories, 6 Heisman winners, 156 first-team All-Americans and 437 NFL players.

Maybe he mentored John McKay or something.

First of all i think that the title will just be listed as vacated…But a case can be made for Au or Ok to be the National Champion..It is true that Ok was beaten by USC and thus you would say Au is undefeated, but ;if you vacate all of USC’s wins then that, on paper at least puts both teams as having a right to be National Champion…We won’t know if Au would have beat OK or USC for that matter, so my feeling is have Co-Champions with Au and Ok..Seems to be the right thing to do and while the true champion wasn’t decided on the field it still would put some closure to this issue and would be the right thing to do in fairness to Au and Ok…Au may have truly been the better team that year but unfortunately we won’t know…At least as Co=Champions it would ease some of the hurt associated with Au not playing in the National Championship game…

I can see an argument for just vacating the 2004 national title, awarding it to OU even though I disagree with that, or awarding it to AU. If it goes to AU I’ve no problem with that. And this is from an Alabama fan.

Probably the most interesting comment is Harold’s comment on Dooley’s recruiting at UT. Halfway through the year UT doesn’t have a committment from a single 4 star player, its committment list is ranked 54th nationally, and the vols trail everybody in the recruiting rankings in the sec except Vandy. This is horrible news if you’re a Vol fan.

UT traditionally has the single largest recruiting budget in the country, they have the big name to recruit nationwide, and Dooley should be locking up top shelf talent left and right with the promise of early playing time. With only 6 scholarship O-lineman on campus UT should have not one but several highly touted O-lineman committed for the 2011 recruiting class. This does not bode well at all for UT.

I am definitely sure that Okalhoma wouldn’t want any part of a Championship that wasn’t won on the field. I would think that Auburn wouldn’t either. If SC is stripped of the 04 title, then I say let there be an asterisk and an explanation as to what happened.

George Stein

USC Rob – The court did not find him innocent. They found him not guilty. There is a big difference between the two. Plus, most people with a brain have a pretty good idea what happened.

As to the larger issue, Auburn should not, under any circumstances, be retroactively awarded the National Championship. While they ended the season unbeaten, we don’t know whether they would have defeated USC (in fact, we have some evidence that they would have been smacked). Further, we don’t know whether Oklahoma would have ended the season unbeaten if they had played VA Tech in the Sugar Bowl that year. All of this also ignores Utah, which also ended the season unbeaten.

Essentially, there are far too many variables to go back and award a title to another team. For 2004, there should not be a champion.

Definitely not a UT fan here, but don’t get to bent out of shape over the Vol recruiting class just yet, there are several very good recruits looking at them and I think Dooley will do well this year, and maybe even better next year…I think way too much is made of how many *stars* a player may have based on info from a recruiting service…It looks good on paper and gives everyone thrills, but unitl they get on the field we really can only speculate on how good of a recruiting class it is…The list is very big on the number of NFL players that were not highly touted going into college…Again, have no allegence with the Vols, but the program is a very good program, and while it has some issues right now, i wouldn’t count them out…The 54th ranking is only a number for others to look at…

Auburn had an uphill argument getting into the BCS title game when they had Citadel, La Tech and La Monroe on their schedule… just unlucky that there were multiple undefeated teams and pretty tough to argue over Oklahoma and USC.

I also know it shouldn’t factor.. but in the current system we have going 8-5 and getting blown out by Southern Cal in 2003 didn’t help their cause in 2004… but that is the reality of the current system. Giving Auburn the title now is dumb and probably won’t appease their fan base.

Boots,

Bama officially counts 13 ncs while the ncaa media guide credits us with 17 going by any poll. If you go by the most usual standard which is by one of the 2 major polls since 1936(AP and coaches poll) we have 8 legit titles(tied with ND). Going by this standard USC has 7 including the one in question and not the 11 that USC prints on that media guide featurning Kiffin. Bama’s other titles inlcude 1925,26, 30, 34, and 41. 1941 is not legit. But 1925, 30, and 34 saw 3 Bama teams go 10-0 and win the Rose bowl the defacto national title game at the time. Those 3 are very legit mythical titles even if they are mythical and or retroactive. No one was better in those 3 years. 1926 Bama team was unbeaten and tied the other top team in the land Stanford in the Rose Bowl. A split title is certainly warranted there also but I’ll chose not to include it just so you won’t complain. Bottom line is that we have 8 recognized titles by one of the 2 major polls, 11 legit titles, and this doesn’t include 2 unbeaten, untied Bama teams in 1945 10-0 and 1966 11-0 that weren’t awarded ncs. You should learn something before making jokes that Bama was claiming national titles back in 1843.

The way it’s going and the basis for some of the sanctions against usc, every d-1 school will face the same issue (re closing practices to outsiders (movie stars & press) since it creates an environment where the athlete does not feel he a part of the student body!) Does anybody really feel that athletes in a major school are treated the same as the student body? Using that logic, every school is in violation. The only difference between a moviestar and a reporter is the size of their wallet. Best way to handle the issue is pay them and get beyond it (maybe fund it through an excise tax on agent earnings).

The constant USC bashing gets a little tiresome… I loathe them just like I loathe the Yankees, but lets face facts, their history in college football is as great as anyones and their record over the past eight years is downright impressive.

Just look at their out of conference record since 2002.. including bowl games it is a ridiculous 34-1. I count not a single Division II opponent and the vast majority are good programs from major conferences.. here is a list of who they have beaten during this span.

Auburn (2)
Colorado
Notre Dame (8)
Kansas State
Iowa
BYU (2)
Hawaii (2)
Michigan (2)
Virginia Tech
Colorado State
Oklahoma
Arkansas (2)
Fresno State
Nebraska
Idaho
Illinois
Virginia
Ohio State (2)
Penn State
San Jose State
Boston College

Compare this out of conference scheduling and record to any other major program and it isn’t even close… that is amazing in my opinion.

Jeff, I don’t know why you and other people that make this comment don’t get this. I by no means am an O.J. defender but, O.J. Simpson won his Heisman trophy as an eligible player for USC. What he did after that does not change what he did that year in football. Claim the trophy but, I would agree about is don’t make it a front and center piece of your trophy case. On the other hand Reggie Bush won his trophy as an ineligible player for USC. I think the Heisman Trust would have every right to take that trophy away. I think if USC has to vacate wins for that year then why should they be able to claim 11 NC. You should recognize the #2 team who was also undefeated as the champion for that year.

I would argue that Auburn has already “Pulled a Bama”… Auburn’s football program was placed on probation by the NCAA in May 1956 and banned from postseason play in 1956 and 1957.
The Tigers were awarded the AP National Championship in 1957—even though they were not eligible to play in a postseason bowl that year. Isn’t that the ONLY NC Auburn officially recognizes?

Arlo – “pulling a Bama” means adding titles decades after the fact when so no name geologist creates his own ranking system and retroactively awards titles. Alabama didn’t recognize many of their so-called thirteen titles until the 1980s when some schmuck saw some useless polls that had UAT at #1.

The AP, arguably one of the main services that names a national champion, named Auburn the national champion in 1957. How is that pulling a Bama.

THIS is the definition of “pulling a Bama.” The 1941 national championship is a fairy tale. Alabama (9-2) had lost to Mississippi State (SEC champs) and Vanderbilt. The Tide finished ranked 20th in the Associate Press Poll, behind four SEC teams.

What I don’t understand is why people claim Auburn would have lost to USC because they lost the previous two years. By that reasoning, Alabama should be awarded the 2010 National Championship as well – they already beat most everyone on their schedule. Why even play the games. Just base everything off of last year’s scores. Auburn changed offensive coordinators between 2003 and 2004. They went from Hugh Nall’s “Jump in the middle of the pile and see if you can’t get two yards” philosophy to Al Borges’ wide open offense. Auburn immediately went from having an anemic offense to one that could score at will. 34 points at #10 Tennessee, 38 against Arkansas, 42 against Kentucky, 35 at Ole Miss, 24 vs #8 Georgia, 38 against #15 Tennessee.

And for those whining about Auburn playing La Monroe, Citadel and La Tech – look at your own schedules. Everybody plays cupcakes. The two Louisiana schools (both of who have beaten Alabama recently – La Tech several times) were scheduled for a long time. Citadel was a last minute replacement for Bowling Green, who took more money to go play Oklahoma and left us scrambling to find an opponent.

Criminal Terds at 2:29,

Trying to revise a little history there buddy? You’ve got a point about one national title that Bama claims that being the 1941 title. So what. Throw it out.

Likewise Michigan claims 11 national titles but only 2 in the modern era going by the 2 legitimate polls the AP and coaches poll since 1936.

Bama’s other titles include 1925, 1930, and 1934 saw 3 Bama teams go 10-0 and win the Rose bowl the defacto national title game at the time. Those 3 are very legit mythical titles even if they are mythical and or retroactive. No one was better in those 3 years and any objective person looking at those seasons would agree. Just cause you don’t like it doesn’t make these 3 titles any less legitimate. Show me who else went unbeaten, untied, and won the biggest bowl of the day in these 3 years.

1926 Bama team was unbeaten and tied the other top team in the land Stanford in the Rose Bowl. A split title is certainly warranted there also but I’ll chose not to include it just so you won’t complain. But when you consider our team played on hostile ground and took a 5 day cross country train ride to get there I think a split title is not unreasonable.

Bottom line is that we have 8 recognized titles by one of the 2 major polls since 1936, 11 totally legit titles throwing out 1941 and 1926, and this doesn’t include 2 unbeaten, untied Bama teams in 1945 10-0 and 1966 11-0 that weren’t awarded ncs.

AU could get a split if the voters truly thought they deserved a split. In light of USC’s total destruction of OU 55-19 and Auburn’s struggle past VT 16-13 the voters unanimously considered USC the best team in both polls. AU had a fine team that year but who could really blame them the voters for giving both polls to USC? Obama is probably way too intelligent and logical to be President of the United States….(I was actually sitting in a place having coffee this morning and heard a person refer to the President as a certain kind of animal…amazing….when you consider the guy making the reference had a brain less intelligent that the animal he mentioning in association with the President of the United States) But…whatever kind of President he currently is….Obama is far better than the guy who occupied the White House the 8 years before him. But the ex-Gov of Michigan (Romney) would have made the best President….but he is “non electable” because he practices a weird religion called Mormonism….and that has to make me wonder just how smart Romney truly is (and I think he is very smart and qualified to be President). Not that mormons are bad people….but to give up the White House for it…and what he actually could accomplish….no way! He is an intelligent right to middle thinker…and a proven, effective manager….and that is what we need….more centralist points of view (and what we got actually got during the prosperous Clinton years…along with his playful, male nature…..and we need more of that kind of centalist thinking in both parties….and less extremism in both…and maybe something good could actually get done in Washington.

….also….I was having coffee in a local spot this morning and this guy across from me referred to the President of the United States….who holds a law degree from Harvard and served on the Harvard Law Review….as a certain type of animal. I thought it was funny because the guy who said it had far less brains than the animal he associated with the President. POAD….

exactly how did Obama become more African-American than white? His father is from Africa and his mother is a white American who was from Hawaii. That means….if you understand math….he is 50% of both. You can’t become more of one than the other. However, the gentic sequencing that he had no control over did give him a largely African-American physical appearance. Now….if you had said that both African-Americans and white Americans saw him as a just an African-American running for President and a majority (I know, not in the highly progressive confederate states of Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Alabama…where the acceptable black man is still mostly just a prized football recruit…just being honest and real folks)….did see him that way and voted for him as such….then your point would be better made and understood….and actually accurate. Most importantly, I believe Mr. Obama….at some time in his life as a mixed raced person…decided to see and represent himself as a black man….married a African-American woman….and is raising…in his eyes…African-American children. But you know….when I voted for him out of frustration of 8 previous years of incompetence in the White House….I did not vote for him as a black man or a white man. I voted for him because McCain was a totally ineffective candidate….and therefore would have been such as President…and because he stupidly select Palin as his VP candidate…although Obama’s selection was nearly as bad.

Eight short years later….the U.S. was in shambles for Obama and his team to try and fix….which, thanks to Bush and friends, will probably be impossible to do. But, hey, elected Sara Palin…she is half as bright Bush….so I guess she can make things even worse for the next democratic President (and we can continue to repeat the cycle). Reagan’s theory of economics, like many great ideas, only works if the rich aren’t greedy and lust for power….but history teachers us that the rich…as a whole…are nothing but about greed and power. Making the rich richer so their wealth will drip down to the less rich and the poor is a great concept and economic theory…that in real world practice will never work because of the prementioned reason. As with Salin’s communist theory of everyone working as one for eutopia….it is only a good theory if the lust for power and control is not a part of human nature…which it is…and if a human being did not have a inner need to always better him or herself….which he and she does. Moderation is the answer to almost everything. It is too bad that right wing extremist (whomever they may be) and left wing extremist (whomever they may be)….and the rich and powerful….get in the way of you and I not eating a nurturing, balanced meal of what is right for everyone. Unfortunately, Auburn lost out on this deal in 2004, changing it now (on paper only) is sort of pointless. So they are listed with the title and an asterisk?

Auburn will be the Gerald Ford of football, never elected VP or President, but served as both. Auburn never played for the National Title, or finished ranked #1, but got it years later. Unfortunate, they were hosed in 2004, but true.

But the BCS works and we don’t need some sort of playoff, right? Right? Yeah right. With the proper playoff, AU would have had their chance to prove it on the field and the SEC could have possibly added another National Title to the pile.

Great stats Jake, would love to see the same stats comparing Auburn and Oklahoma. Suspect, AU shows just as deserving in that breakdown.

You must get your “facts” from fantasyland, Tampon. The lowest rate under Clinton was 4.6%. The lowest under Bush was 4.4%.

“I have no idea where you got your number…but I got mine from a .gov website on unemployment records.”

Post the link.

Jeff, in case you don’t remember OJ was found innocent in a court of law by a jury of his peers. No reason to make some terrible accusation that he “may have killed two people”……a crime that a judge and jury found him innocent of and totally cleared the charges.
=======================
Ah, I wondered where these people were? Living right here in ATL most likely. Yeah, OJ was innocent. He’s really a model citizen. How’s that hunt for the killer workin on the golf course OJ?

This…no, these blogs have turned into a joke! We are suppose to comment on the upcoming season. Yet they have digressed into a forum on crime in schools and criticism of the academics, etc. of schools. Now we have discussions of things that belong on a political blog.
As far as the upcoming season is concerned, It doesn’t matter if Tech students are smarter, Florida won more National championships, USC cheated or Obama is a socialist! What matters is the upcoming season. Georgia will win at least 10 games which would be a great season for any school whether it produces a mythical NC or not!
Grow up kids!

[...] USC recently unveiled their media guide cover for this season, but what they failed to mention is that just like Alabama, they created more than one.  We happen to have a copy of the alternate version they didn’t release at Media Days.  [H/T Ghost of Neyland] Days. Leave a Comment [...]

It’s a shame….

I could give you the web address and you would say….”The government records are controlled by the communist inspired liberals in congress.” I am done with two way with you. Some people are not worth having a concersation with…..but all you have to do is get on the internet and do a little research….just type in “unemployement records” and you will find the data for unemployment history for the Clinton administration….it is there for all to see…or, in your case, deny. You trying to say Bush was good for unemployment is like saying being consumed by a hungry bear is good for population control. There is a reason Clinton was ranked as the #5 president in history (by historical scholars (I know, all educators are communists) and GW was ranked 3rd from the bottom of all presidents….but you just keep on denying reality.

It's a shame what he did to that dog

Huh?

“but all you have to do is get on the internet and do a little research”

I did, and nowhere did it say that unemployment was 3.9% under Clinton.

“You trying to say Bush was good for unemployment is like saying being consumed by a hungry bear is good for population control.”

Your words, not mine.

“There is a reason Clinton was ranked as the #5 president in history ”

No, Reagan is number 5 all time. Not sure what fake poll you’re looking at.

“nd GW was ranked 3rd from the bottom of all presidents….but you just keep on denying reality.”

If W was so bad, why does Obama keep his policies around?

Simpson is entitled to the benefit of the doubt, and he has been found not guilty in a court of law. It’s entirely possible that someone else with Simpson’s DNA brutally slaughtered two people, including the ex-wife that he liked to stalk, then tracked the bloody evidence into Simpson’s SUV and back to Simpson’s house using Simpson’s shoes and gloves without drawing any attention to himself despite this person not being OJ and trampling all over OJ’s property. Happens all the time.

I guess Bush’s “crime” was causing USC to forfeit wins during its season of glory. In the world of college football, that’s a bigger offense than a mere double-homicide.

Auburn played a weak schedule. If the BCS title is to be given to another team, it should be OU, not an overrated Auburn team.”

Who Auburn BEAT 2004 :

# 7 Final AP Poll in 2004 Georgia was 10-2 beat 9-3 LSU, beat 7-5 Florida, beat 7-5 Georgia tek, lost to 10-3 Tennessee vols and lost to 13-0 Auburn.

# 10 Final AP Poll in 2004 Virginia Tech were 10-3 lost to 13-0 Auburn in the Sugar Bowl, beat 9-3 Miami, beat 8-4 Virginia, beat 7-5 Georgia tek and beat 8-4 West Virginia.

# 13 Final AP Poll in 2004 Tennessee vols were 10-3 losing to 13-0 Auburn

# 13 Final AP Poll in 2004 Tennessee vols were 10-3 losing to 13-0 Auburn twice, but beat 10-2 Georgia.

# 16 Final AP Poll in 2004 LSU was 9-3 losing to 13-0 Auburn

Southern California in 2004 WAS ranked # 1 Final AP Poll and Auburn was ranked # 2 in the Final AP Poll.

0 wins 2004 Southern California
5 wins 2004 vs Top 16 Final AP Poll teams Auburn

BCS said they will wait until Southern California loses its appeal, however, Southern California is NOT appealing the 14 wins vacated.

As far as I am concerned, and everyone else, Auburn is the only undefeated team, won 5 games vs Top 16 Final AP Poll teams, and is the NC.

I said that at the time.

I still say it.

Hey, Jeff, a small correction for your article. USC didn’t have to vacate all of it’s games for the 2004 season, as you claimed here:

“The Trojans won the championship game but, as you might have heard, just got put into NCAA timeout and now must vacate all wins for that season.”

They only had to vacate the last 2 games of the 2004 season, which were the UCLA game, and the Orange Bowl National Championship game. It was the 2005 season that they vacated entirely, except for the Rose Bowl National Championship game, which of course, they lost to Texas.

The only thing worse than getting snubbed by the BCS back in 2004 for an Auburn fan would be to buy into this story and hold out hope to be awarded the 2004 National Championship…. only to have it ultimately not happen.

Hey Schultz,

Saw where Doole really threw down the gauntlet at UFK as compared to UGA. He has recently reinstated two Volunteers players he suspended following a July bar brawl that left an off-duty police officer seriously injured.

Sophomore linebacker Greg King and sophomore defensive tackle Marlon Walls will join their teammates when they begin fall practice Wednesday. The pair has been suspended since the July 9 brawl, though their roles in the incident have never been made clear by police.

Dooley said Tuesday he’s comfortable with the punishment Walls and King have served. What punishment…what were they suspened from? At least when UGA suspends theiroffending players its from what they really care about…the games and playing time. What these Vowels did was in the same realm as UGA’s players that you ripped along with CMR’s handling of it.

Why is CMR subject to your criticism but not Saint Dooley? Here’s what he said about being tough on misbehavior of his players (now it means nothing..it was lip service..think the player know the difference…damn right they do …especially now…they have no reason to fear realpunisment):

“As I have referenced on many occasions, a change in culture is
achieved in time through a combination of education, discipline and
support. We will aggressively continue to build on the many positive
changes that have occurred over the last five months to ensure our
program is represented with class and dignity.”

“There has been enough incidents to know that we can’t just stick
our head in the sand and say, ‘Oh, we’re really OK. Just one or two
guys did this,’” Dooley said. “I don’t ever stick my head in the
sand, and we take responsibility for it and we’re going to continue
to change it.”

What Dooley demonstrated here is weakness…and worse the message was sent loud and clear…we need you to win games and that’s more important. At least UGA has mandantory specific suspensions actually put to use not just threatened. Dooley is no disciplinarian!

Look forward to your blog/article slamming Dooley as well as you did CMR…showing your fairness right? I won’t hold my breath. Probably going to just get excuses.

USC’s vacated wins does not change OU having lost…it simply means that the win was vacated…OU still has the loss on their record according to the NCAA…O.J. was indeed “found not guilty” by a jury of…well…his peers…people who would not have voted him guilty eve if Nicole & Ron had come back from the dead and told them O.J. did it…The prosecutors proved their case but the defense counsel turned the trial into a race question and the spineless judge, look at me I’m on T.V. Ito, let them get away with it…
