Regarding CMR, there has been some ugliness this summer but a man is measured by how he responds to adversity. He was proactive and showed a zero-tolerance for any type of sexual crimes with Mettenberger. He showed compassion by counseling Montez Robinson even after he was forced to kick him off the team, he likely would’ve suspended Dontavious Jackson for half the season had he not left school. I don’t have a problem with how he’s leading the young men on the team because he’s being an example of high character and integrity. What will get him on the hot seat is not underage drinking, if it happens, it will eventually be because he couldn’t get back to the top of the division and conference.

Also, Damon Evans’ problems don’t reflect on Coach Richt at all. He was after all, technically CMR’s boss.

It’s about winning at all costs. Richt got it honest from Bowden. They recruit thugs and pray to God they don’t get into trouble. Compare to USC and Vandy. They win less but their kids are not always in trouble. Spurrier had some issues when he first got there but he cleaned house and righted the ship. 1 arrest in 2 years and that charge was dropped.

It can be done. Might have to win with 3 stars who come from good homes and are of unquestionable integrity.

Jeff…down here in south Florida, Saban made the sports shows everywhere when he made a Dolphins lineman break down into tears during pre-season training one year…remember that?? If he can reduce a pro footballer to bubbling like a pre-school kid being denied his next ice cream cone, you just know how big an intimidation factor he is on college kids. I watched him on Bob Neill’s sports talk show last night…and I’m telling you Saban looks like a Mafia figure…I doubt he’d smile if he won the lottery. He’s scary…but maybe that’s what it takes today to keep these idiot, spoiled HS brats under wraps.

I think this whole thing is overblown. These are college students who sometimes make bad decisions. I am a Georgia grad and very happy that the foolish things I did while in college were not front page news. The truth is that fans (and media) don’t know enough to make judgments on these things. We only know “what happened” to the extent that it is in the news. We don’t know the players. We don’t know their issues. We don’t know the coaches. We don’t know the internal relationships. We know next to nothing. Exactly what the columnists know.

The hardest part of coaching, I think, is having to deal constantly with complaints and “advice” from people who know less than a tenth of what you know about what you do.

Get over it. There is nothing that Richt or any other coach can do to keep this kids from some of the behavior they’ve exhibited. All they can do is “coach” and “teach”. It is ultimately the indivduals choice in how they choose to handle these situations. There is only so much a coach can do…..

Please get over yourself…..I’d like to see you coach a HIGH PROFILE SEC TEAM for 1 season…..just as long as it’s NOT UGA!!!!

One of the only times i have felt that you are wrong with your opinion. What ugliness at UGA? D Evans? Richt has no association with that. Neither do the players.
What is the UGA players’ worst offense? Underage drinking? Riding a moped w/out a license? Unpaid parking tickets? Wow. CMR should be ashamed he’s recruiting such bad kids.
3 guys actually partook (?) in worse and CMR expelled them from the program right?
Richt is doing everything right except winning championships. If he continues to build his program the right way, and continues to make changes to his staff when needed, UGA will eventually win more SECC and probably a NC.
I don’t think he has a discipline problem. This goes on at most big-time programs, and most colleges period. When they’ re not athletes, its not news.

you people still do not understand. Athens is one of the few places in the US where officers are REQUIRED to make an arrest for an underage alcohol incident. THERE ARE NO WARNINGS. Look at places like Alabama and LSU. They have kids get citations for an MIP all the time, but it never goes to the papers because they are not arrested. If the same incident occurred in Athens, the person would be arrested and charged, not simply given a citation and a slap on the wrist.

Ex: If Athens was like the rest of the US, then T King would have been given a citation and asked to call a ride home. Only D Jax would have been arrested (obviously a DUI is an arrest anywhere)

SC Boy…”win less”??? Vandy wins about 3 games a year and (I assume you mean South Carolina) wins 6-7 games a year. Richt averages 10 wins a year. That’s a big distinction.

And…Spurrier “cleaned house”? Um, isn’t Stephen Garcia still there?

That said…Richt has to find a way to right the ship. UF and Bama win and don’t seem to have near the problems we do.

GeoffDawg – I think you’re right generally. Richt can’t – and shouldn’t – monitor his players’ behavior all the time. It’s extremely difficult to be proactive because the only way to do it is to have predefined penalties for an action and, unfortunately, life isn’t black and white. So, coaches are forced to be reactive. And while I think Richt’s penalties may be too light on occasion, it’s hard to criticize him for his players’ (or AD’s) behavior.

You are so full of S**T. Our coach is a great man. Kids get in to trouble every now and then. The problems are small compared to Alabama athletes selling books back to other students , at Florida the majority of football players test positive for drug use at compine. Notre Dame had 11 athletes arrested last week. Every school has it’s issues period. Houston at GT sells drugs. Georgia has won 90 games in 10 years. How may schools can top that? NOT MANY. Plus, we have a honorable man leading us. I will be happy to live the rest of my life in the same situation.

It occurs to me that Coach Richt in print “sounds” somewhat like Chipper Jones. “It’s like, you know, [things] are gonna happen.” I don’t think that Chipper’s “Uh, you know..uh, mumble, mumble, you know…” makes it into print. It’s laughable when Gator fans are pointing fingers at any other program for a lack of discipline. Talk about the epitome of hypocritical. This is the same program that had an NCAA record for arrests in a single year with 12 in 2007, and as of last year, the huge story was how out of control the UF program is with all the arrests, many of which were serious felony offenses (burglary, assault, robbery, felony drug possession, firing AK-47’s, credit card fraud, etc, etc.) as opposed to underage drinking or the occasional DUI. Gators should get their own inmates in order before they concern themselves with other schools.

Each player was punished. These are the same players GT and others tried but failed to get.

Mark has the highest character of any football coach around (have you ever read CPJ lips during a game, wow!)

UGA is the standard in this state.

That he is. I can handle being provocative. I just don’t like reporting stuff that is blatantly false or misleading. It is kinda funny how he transformed a joke about Saban’s height into portraying him as fearsome one article later.

About the only thing he got right lately about Saban is that his players do have fear of Saban. They do and I’m okay with that as long as it keeps them out of the headlines.

When Dareus found out an agent was behind the party, he flew home the next morning and called Saban asap to tell him what happened. I guess he was scared and knew the consequences if he tried to hide it from the mighty mean midget.I like that. A little fear can be a good thing.

Hey Jeff,

Here’s a stat for you. 78 of UGA players were NOT arrested. Why doesn’t anyone ever talk about all the players that are busting their tails and doing their jobs? I know you have to try and make it seem as though UGA’s football program is in dire straits in order to make a good story and all but the truth is we still have a good program and a good coach and we are going to come out of this just fine. Trust me.

Last year Spurrier made headlines with his open and public threat to leave USC if the USC admisitration didnt lower the academic standards WAY down to a level that he preferred to have in order to recruit his type of player.

Would you ask him this question:

Coach, considering USC’s poor showing in 2009, will you be asking the USC administration to lower the academic standards even further this year, in hopes of being competitive in the SEC?

What I have become use to is Jeff Schultz writing negative columns about UGA. Jeff, I would like you to post at least 5 good columns you have ever written about UGA. I bet you can’t find five. The only ones I see is you asking if Mark Richt is on the hot seat, or does Mark Richt have control of his program, or is Mark Richt too nice he needs to be more like Saban. Makes me wonder what Mark Richt did to you to make you so negative about UGA.

Lay off. Richt’s character reputation is hardly tarnished. A coach’s or school’s reputation is tarnished when they turn a blind eye to their player’s misbehavior. (Miami or Oklahoma in the 80’s are prime examples.) When a coach or school expresses their disapproval and enforces a reasonable consequence, their reputation is fine.

But more than that: as far as Richt is concerned, I bet a success story like Ellerbe makes it all worthwhile. Richt’s approach is to build character, to give players enough space that they can mess up, but to help them along in such a way that they will grow up on their own, become adults. He has players that struggle but that he’s truly proud of by the time they move on. And you know what, I’m proud to have a coach like that.

I don’t think I have seen an article written in the past few years that is so out of touch with reality. 1- Mark Richt cannot control what his AD does. 2 – College kids are going to get into trouble. Look at every campus in the country for the past 100 years. College kids drink beer and do things they shouldn’t.

Richt can’t impose his iron will over free people. That is not how the world works. Also, him getting upset about it won’t help either. Only journalists that don’t live in the real world write stories about people being able to control things they have little to no control over.

Come on Schultzie; you making mountains out of mole hills…Just cause the NCAA comes to check on a kid doesn’t mean the sky is falling…They checked on Florida kids, Alabama kids, South Carolina kids, and many others. You have something personal against Coach Richt and everytime something happens like this NCAA deal, you make it into something it is not to make Coach Richt look like he is not in control. You don’t have to intimidate players to get them to play for you, as you referred to in the article about Coach Saban…Having been close to the Bulldog program, the players respect Coach Richt every bit as much as the Alabama players respect Coach Saban….Just read about 10 Notre Dame players getting arrested for underage drinking and disturbing the peace at a pool party….Guess that means they don’t respect their new coach…Arrests are result of a society without fathers and mothers raising the kids…It is everywhere, they all recruit the same kids…Some do a better job of hiding it than others…AND you write about losses for a coach that averages 10 wins per year…We know you love Tech, and you did everything but declare them the victors last year over at the joke by coke…But it went down on you and your favorite Coach Paul, but to your credit, you haven’t given up on getting Coach Richt fired….This entire article is a HUGE REACH at yet again discrediting CMR, and the only ones who are real Georgia fans and have a clue about life who would say negatives about CMR are the ones who either don’t have enough sense to find Sanford-Dooley Stadium on Saturdays or don’t have enough money to buy a ticket….

These columns are based on the news that the NCAA is visiting UGA. So what. They are looking into any big name college athelete from South Carolina right now. That does’nt mean that anything happened with a UGA player. If Green said he was at home he was at home. He is a kid who never has been in trouble or linked to trouble. Even with his success he seems to be a humble kid that would’nt be inpressed by flashy agents. He’s not like Mike Vick. I don’t think this kid would lie directly to Mark Richt about something like this. I think the most stupid thing about this column is labeling the UGA program as ugly. Ugly because a few kids drink underage and you have over aggressive University Police that have nothing better to do? Ugly because a grown man made a stupid decision that reflected on his character. Jeff, I want to know what you would expect Richt to do? I want you to name one coach in the SEC that is more strict than Richt. Mark Richt actually suspends his players for multiple games not practices. UGA has the toughest penalties for drinking than any other SEC school. Norte Dame just had 9 players arrested for underage drinking and NONE of the 9 will miss any games. Several SEC players have been arrested for DUI and drinking and I can’t wait to see how many games they are suspended for. My bet is 0 !

When you say the Bama players are intimidated by Saban and UGA’s aren’t by Richt are you referring to the Bama player who was at the agents party in South Beach and AJ Green who wasn’t? How does that reflect poorly on Richt. I highly doubt that more Bama players aren’t in trouble over the summer…their police are just better at covering it up. Sure there is a cloud and dissapointment in Evans and the DUI’s and alcohol arrests, but what can he realistically do?

Logically your arguments make no since:
You imply that the actions of the players reflect on Mark Richt which they do to a certain extent: but what really reflects on his character is what type of reaction he makes, and as you stated he has kicked players off the team and suspended them. This implies he is actually doing his job very well unlike many other schools across the country and in the SEC.

As for the Damon Evens comment this is another attempt at failed logic. How is Mark Richt’s reputation hindered by the actions of “his boss.” Are you implying that Richt hired his own boss or controlled his boss and thus condoned his actions. Once again this makes no since.

Lastly, by knocking the quality of recruits at UGA you are implying that the WORLD should shun all those who do not have the Jeff Schultz requisite Character traits … rather in adhering to his faith coach Richt would accept the challenge of trying to mold a boy (by actions) into a Man.

Schultz you are such a waste. If the number of arrests is the defining criteria for a football coach, Brian Kelly should be gone at Notre Dame today. In case you missed it Schultz, 11 – ELEVEN – ND football players were arrested last weekend. I suppose in your world the Apocalypse is on our doorsteps, hmmm?

Arrests for underage drinking, or not knowing how your middle name is listed in your Univ records, hardly rises to the level of felonies, bar brawls, possession of drugs, armed robbery, etc., that other schools have had with football players, or basketball players. Your constant attempts to trash the University of Georgia football program and Mark Richt are pathetic. As for Nick Saban walking in and intimidating a locker room, maybe so, maybe not, I’m left wondering if that is how you judge the quality of a coach. If so, then Jackie Sherril must be the greatest who ever strolled a sideline, hell the bulls headed for the hills when they saw Jackie I can only imagine how a 19 or 20 yr old must have felt knowing that same fate could befall him.

Mark Richt is fine, the Georgia program is fine, the underage consumption is not a reflection upon the character of the program.

CMR has to reap what he sows. You recruit a young man, athlete, with no morals and/or integrity and that is exactly what you get. UGA especially CMR has gotten so “tied up” into winning trying to beat Florida or whomever that they have failed to be selective in their recruiting process. It’s sort of a moot point what Richt thinks or does about it. He’s doing what he thinks is right, given what he has to achieve.

When you have as much pressure to win as SEC coaches do, you have to take some risks. You have some top-tier programs that can get the cream of the crop yet not take many character risks – but at every level below that, many of the 4 and 5 star recruits have risk factors. Even Notre Dame has had some issues… Ohio State had the Maurice Clarrett issue (and still does)…

This will go on until the administration at UGA has had enough of it, then it will act.

I know you’ve probably been busy all day listening to coaches there, but mrsec.com rated Mark Richt the highest of the week for honesty, communication, etc., higher than Saban or Meyer. Richt almost got a perfect score.

It appears some there think Richt helped the image of Georgia and his words certainly made a positive impact on them. Just wanted you to know, other journalist without a Georgia bias, don’t see what you see, and see things much more differently, and positively, when it comes to Mark Richt helping Georgia’s image.

ya know, these college students and atheletes have to assume responsibility for there actions! I was kicked off a high school team for drinking on a game bus….NOT my shool nor coaches fault! It was something I stupidly did with my peers! However, no one blamed the coach, the school… just me and that was deserved! I suffered the consequences, and returned the next season and had a great one! My point is, college kids are gonna drink, pop firecrackers, etc…no matter what…the individual is responsible for their actions…not the coach or school…!!! So, Jeff, lay off Richt…!!!!

Yes drinking is terrible. Now the next person who says something negative has to be from a team with fewer arrests and no felonies. Alright no TENN/UF fans. They also have to tell me that there has not been atleast 7 people on their team to get drunk this year. NO college sports fans oh and that they never drank or did anything stupid in college. OH wait no one and if you say that football players should be held to a higher standard your pathetic. A teenage kid is a teenage kid and above all else he should be allowed to make mistakes not be blasted for them. Drinking underage isn’t thug behavior however blasting UGA kids for doing it while you or your children have done it is hypocrisy think about that

If we based our personal happiness/quality of life on everything going on around us, most people would be miserable. Kind of like like you Schultzie. I get that you hate UGA, but this is just a bit much. You sound like scrooge. It’s funny how you are much more concerned about the program than Richt. OH as for the agents if you say you wouldn’t take a bribe or go to a party with an agent your lieing to me. honestly if you were offered $100,000 by this guy would you turn him down. NO. But since we didn’t get offered it we can all sit here and bitch because they did. Please your all pathetic I would have done it in a minute and said fuck you NCAA. This is almost as stupid as the Dez Bryant thing last year. If the NCAA was serious about these bribes and collusion they would go to the people causing it the agents and colleges. Blaming kids for wanting money and gifts is absurd. NCAA here is a clue try actually facing your own failures for once for not going after those who give these bribes. Continue to push around the college kid who doesn’t know any better because your to lazy to make a legitimate to stop these guys.

Jeff Jeff Jeff… you gotta know you sensationalized this one & did everything you could to paint a negative light on Richt & indirectly place every issue on his shoulders while suggesting he’s soft & not doing enough to either avoid or solve the “ugliness”.

He’s kicked the bad eggs off the team for goodness sakes. What else can any coach in the world do to send a message to the rest of his players what the consequences are for being a bad egg? There’s absolutely nothing else that’s reslistic.

You could have & should have worded this much different. “A HOT summer for Richt… Learn what he’s doing to chill it out.”

I cancelled my AJC subscription 30 minutes ago, by the way. I don’t need this kind of nonsense on my kitchen table anymore.

If Schultz had been a coach rather than a Journalist his article would have read a little differently.
I coached high school football for forty years ,and had some of the same problems that coach Richt has had. They are decisions sometimes that come from the heart you make them and sometime they are right sometime they are wrong. When a former player comes back one day a tells you he is a better person for having gone through your program it means so much more than your won, loss record. Drinking, will be a problem in college athletics as long as the drink is sold. It is a problem in High School athletics. Give me an athlete who drives a pick up carries a shotgun in his gun rack and sometimes drinks a beer and I will win ballgames.

Jeff your article lacks a solution. You are very opinionated when it comes to Richt’s leadership. But you offer no help, no solution, and no opinion on how Richt might “solve” the arrests and losses that you mention in your article. I can sense your frustration but you offer Coach Richt and your readers no solution and no help. Suppose you had two kids who played football for two different coaches. One of your kids learned to make right choices in life out of fear because he was intimated by his coach. The other learned to make right choices in life out of respect for his coach because he was led by a man of integrity. In the end, who will be a better football player? Who will be a better man? Which one is more important?
