Richt’s words, actions haven’t changed ugliness at Georgia

HOOVER, Ala. — Mark Richt says he has “really enjoyed this summer.”

Given that seven of his players have been arrested, three have been kicked out of the program, another transferred after being suspended for half the season, his boss was arrested for a DUI and ultimately was forced to resign and the NCAA just phoned to announce their impending arrival in Athens, we’re left to wonder: Just how low does Richt set the bar for his summers?

Mark Richt has had a tumultuous summer. (AP photo by Butch Dill)

Mark Richt has had a tumultuous summer. (AP photo by Butch Dill)

Or has he just become used to this sort of thing?

“It’s like, you know [something is] gonna happen,” he said Thursday morning. “It’s just like a ballgame. You know there’s going to be a penalty or a turnover, even though you don’t want there to be. Now you have to decide: How are you going to react to that? You can lose your cool and start spouting things you wish you didn’t say. Or you can just take care of the issue and move forward. That’s what I try to do.”

Problem being: It’s not working.

We can go round and round about how players are individuals who make individual choices (sometimes dumb ones). We can talk about how a coach, who has given a thousand speeches and made a thousand threats, may be on a remote tropical island while his quarterback is drinking himself into oblivion and groping a woman in a small-town bar. But does it really matter?

Whether Richt is saying the right or wrong things, or recruiting the right or wrong players, or setting the right or wrong tone, this is his program. He knows that. Anything that happens, whether it’s a stirring win in Tuscaloosa or an ugly arrest in Remerton, reflects on him.

Right now, the ugliness reflects on Mark Richt.

When he met with a small group of media members Thursday, prior to his main news conference at SEC media days, Richt was typically calm and cordial, even as a storm swirled around the program. Some would say that’s one of his strengths, not seeming like he’s going to put his fist through a wall every time something goes wrong. The downside to that is it gives others the perception, whether accurate or not, that he’s either bringing in the wrong players or he’s not a strong enough disciplinarian when they get here.

Question: Do you get a sense that when Nick Saban walks into a locker room that every one of their players is just a little bit intimidated. If so, do you get that same sense with Richt?

“I’ve got a process of handling these situations and I think I do a good job of it,” Richt said, calmly.

He was asked if he has tightened restrictions on player, in light of the arrests this summer. He declined comment.

He was asked later about some media outlets having him on a “hot seat,” partly because of last season’s 4-4 conference record.

Insulted?

“Not really. I understand the business,” he said. “I don’t worry about it. My goal is to focus on the important things and the things I can control.”

Coaching at the same SEC school for 10 years will grow a man some thick skin.

“In the end, we’re still in process of educating young people: How to handle adversity and rebound from that,” Richt said. “[Former UGA linebacker] Dannell Ellerbe. He had an issue early in his career: a DUI and a car wreck. I said, ‘Look, what you did damaged your reputation and Georgia’s reputation. But it didn’t destroy it. It only destroys it if you let it destroy it. If you allow this to put you in the tank, then you’re probably not going to make it.’ He was on his last leg at Georgia. But he got his act together.”

He has had those success stories. But arrests and losses have a cumulative effect. To use Richt’s words, they can damage the reputation of a man and a school.

I don’t know what more Richt can do. For journalists to expect incidents NOT to occur, particularly since 75% are drinking related, these are college students, is naiive.

It’d be like a journalist being judged by their perfection at grammar in a blogging environment over 365 days. 1 mistake, or 12 mistakes, and they’re considered incompetant & they’re fired? Come on now.

Do you think that the kids were intimidated when John Wooden walked into the locker room? Probably not. But they learned about how to conduct themselves as men, not to cower in a corner because they are intimidated. Give me a man that teaches others to be men. Thanks, Coach Richt.

Actually, it would be like a journalist being judged, not by his OWN mistakes, but by the number of grammar mistakes made by 120 OTHER journalist on their staff, over a 365 day period. Absurd.

If Richt’s program, base don mistakes made by SOME of his 120 players over a 365 day period, is “ugly”, I guess most journalists are “ugly”, based on the sheer number of mistakes made over 365 days by fellow staffers, and at least 120 other journalists.

Regarding CMR, there has been some ugliness this summer but a man is measured by how he responds to adversity. He was proactive and showed a zero-tolerance for any type of sexual crimes with Mettenberger. He showed compassion by counseling Montez Robinson even after he was forced to kick him off the team, he likely would’ve suspended Dontavious Jackson for half the season had he not left school. I don’t have a problem with how he’s leading the young men on the team because he’s being an example of high character and integrity. What will get him on the hot seat is not underage drinking, if it happens, it will eventually be because he couldn’t get back to the top of the division and conference.

Also, Damon Evans’ problems don’t reflect on Coach Richt at all. He was after all, technically CMR’s boss.

I guess UGA is the badboy in the SEC despite the fact that Florida has more arrests (a couple of them felonies) than any other program over Meyer’s tenure. But Urban Meyer’s heart my explode if anyone mentions that so the AJC decides to throw mud on UGA’s program as having a cloud over it. Good God, no wonder the Macon Telegraph covers UGA better than the AJC. If we win a National championship, people will finally get off his back.

It’s about winning at all costs. Richt got it honest from Bowden. They recruit thugs and pray to God they don’t get into trouble. Compare to USC and Vandy. They win less but their kids are not always in trouble. Spurrier had some issues when he first got there but he cleaned house and righted the ship. 1 arrest in 2 years and that charge was dropped.

It can be done. Might have to win with 3 stars who come from good homes and are of unquestionable integrity.

I think this whole thing is overblown. These are college students who sometimes make bad decisions. I am a Georgia grad and very happy that the foolish things I did while in college were not front page news. The truth is that fans (and media) don’t know enough to make judgments on these things. We only know “what happened” to the extent that it is in the news. We don’t know the players. We don’t know their issues. We don’t know the coaches. We don’t know the internal relationships. We know next to nothing. Exactly what the columnists know.

The hardest part of coaching, I think, is having to deal constantly with complaints and “advice” from people who know less than a tenth of what you know about what you do.

What is the UGA players’ worst offense? Underage drinking? Riding a moped w/out a license? Unpaid parking tickets? Wow. CMR should be ashamed he’s recruiting such bad kids.
3 guys actually partook (?) in worse and CMR expelled them from the program right?
Richt is doing everything right except winning championships. If he continues to build his program the right way, and continues to make changes to his staff when needed, UGA will eventually win more SECC and probably a NC.
I don’t think he has a discipline problem. This goes on at most big-time programs, and most colleges period. When they’ re not athletes, its not news.

you people still do not understand. Athens is one of the few places in the US where officers are REQUIRED to make an arrest for an underage alcohol incident. THERE ARE NO WARNINGS. Look at places like Alabama and LSU. They have kids get citations for an MIP all the time, but it never goes to the papers because they are not arrested. If the same incident occurred in Athens, the person would be arrested and charged, not simply given a citation and a slap on the wrist.

Ex: If Athens was like the rest of the US, then T King would have been given a citation and asked to call a ride home. Only D Jax would have been arrested (obviously a DUI is an arrest anywhere)

GeoffDawg – I think you’re right generally. Richt can’t – and shouldn’t – monitor his players’ behavior all the time. It’s extremely difficult to be proactive because the only way to do it is to have predefined penalties for an action and, unfortunately, life isn’t black and white. So, coaches are forced to be reactive. And while I think Richt’s penalties may be too light on occasion, it’s hard to criticize him for his players’ (or AD’s) behavior.

I will take Coach Richt 1,000,000 times over anyone else. He runs a clean program and he is a man of integrity and character. He is not responsible for the former AD’s indiscretions no more than he is responsible for what the players do OFF THE FIELD.

Richt is the guy who said his team just ran on the field and began to dance against UF a few years ago. Journalism died about 2008. With irresponsible articles like this, you’re simply exhuming journalism from its grave, beating the crap out of the rotting corpse with the shovel, then re-burying it. If William Randolph Hurst, the king of yellow journalism, was still here, even he would be shaking his head in disgust.

It occurs to me that Coach Richt in print “sounds” somewhat like Chipper Jones. “It’s like, you know, [things] are gonna happen.” I don’t think that Chipper’s “Uh, you know..uh, mumble, mumble, you know…” makes it into print. Jeff, you should quote Chipper verbatim if you’re going to quote Coach Richt verbatim.

It’s laughable when Gator fans are pointing fingers at any other program for a lack of discipline. Talk about the epitome of hypocritical. This is the same program that had an NCAA record for arrests in a single year with 12 in 2007, and as of last year, the huge story was how out of control the UF program is with all the arrests, many of which were serious felony offenses (burglary, assault, robbery, felony drug possession, firing AK-47’s, credit card fraud, etc, etc.) as opposed to underage drinking or the occasional DUI. Gators should get their own inmates in order before they concern themselves with other schools.

You, Journalists in general, tend to exaggerate the matters to make up stories, so what our AD resigned or few back ups got arrested, I really dont give a damn, it doesn’t matter what so ever and should not affect one tiny bit on our team performance. I care about our QB pinkie more than the UGA president with all his staff, so if you have anything to say about our 1st team players and coaches we are all ears other than that enough said lets play ball. COLD BEER + HOT WOMAN = TROUBLE

Unless CMR can remove all the hot women from UGA or make Clarke County a dry county there’s alway going to be some problems. These young men are typical. They work hard and football and want to play hard and hook up with women. I played football at GSU under Coach Russell and i can tell you that there were alot of Dui’s and alcohol related arrests. The biggest difference was the media scrutiny wasn’t near as much as it is now. I guarantee you there were just as many or more 20 years ago than today but you just didn’t hear about it.

That he is. I can handle being provocative. I just don’t like reporting stuff that is blatantly false or misleading. It is kinda funny how he transformed a joke about Saban’s height into portraying him as fearsome one article later.

About the only thing he got right lately about Saban is that his players do have fear of Saban. They do and I’m okay with that as long as it keeps them out of the headlines.

When Dareus found out an agent was behind the party, he flew home the next morning and called Saban asap to tell him what happened. I guess he was scared and knew the consequences if he tried to hide it from the mighty mean midget.I like that. A little fear can be a good thing.

What I have become use to is Jeff Schultz writing negative columns about UGA. Jeff, I would like you to post at least 5 good columns you have ever written about UGA. I bet you can’t find five. The only ones I see is you asking if Mark Richt is on the hot seat, or does Mark Richt have control of his program, or is Mark Richt too nice he needs to be more like Saban. Lay off. Richt’s character reputation is hardly tarnished. A coach’s or school’s reputation is tarnished when they turn a blind eye to their player’s misbehavior. (Miami or Oklahoma in the 80’s are prime examples.) When a coach or school expresses their disapproval and enforces a reasonable consequence, their reputation is fine.

But more than that: as far as Richt is concerned, I bet a success story like Ellerbe makes it all worthwhile. Richt’s approach is to build character, to give players enough space that they can mess up, but to help them along in such a way that they will grow up on their own, become adults. He has players that struggle but that he’s truly proud of by the time they move on. And you know what, I’m proud to have a coach like that.

Look at every campus in the country for the past 100 years. College kids drink beer and do things they shouldn’t.

Richt can’t impose his iron will over free people. That is not how the world works. Also, him getting upset about it won’t help either. Only journalists that don’t live in the real world write stories about people being able to control things they have little to no control over.

Come on Schultzie; you making mountains out of mole hills…Just cause the NCAA comes to check on a kid doesn’t mean the sky is falling…They checked on Florida kids, Alabama kids, South Carolina kids, and many others. You have something personal against Coach Richt and everytime something happens like this NCAA deal, you make it into something it is not to make Coach Richt look like he is not in control. You don’t have to intimidate players to get them to play for you, as you referred to in the article about Coach Saban…Having been close to the Bulldog program, the players respect Coach Richt every bit as much as the Alabama players respect Coach Saban….Just read about 10 Notre Dame players getting arrested for underage drinking and disturbing the peace at a pool party….Guess that means they don’t respect their new coach…Arrests are result of a society without fathers and mothers raising the kids…It is everywhere, they all recruit the same kids…Some do a better job of hiding it than others…AND you write about losses for a coach that averages 10 wins per year…We know you love Tech, and you did everything but declare them the victors last year over at the joke by coke…But it went down on you and your favorite Coach Paul, but to your credit, you haven’t given up on getting Coach Richt fired….This entire article is a HUGE REACH at yet again discrediting CMR, and the only ones who are real Georgia fans and have a clue about life who would say negatives about CMR are the ones who either don’t have enough sense to find Sanford-Dooley Stadium on Saturdays or don’t have enough money to buy a ticket….

These columns are based on the news that the NCAA is visiting UGA. So what. They are looking into any big name college athelete from South Carolina right now. That does’nt mean that anything happened with a UGA player. If Green said he was at home he was at home. He is a kid who never has been in trouble or linked to trouble. Even with his success he seems to be a humble kid that would’nt be inpressed by flashy agents. He’s not like Mike Vick. I don’t think this kid would lie directly to Mark Richt about something like this. I think the most stupid thing about this column is labeling the UGA program as ugly. Ugly because a few kids drink underage and you have over aggressive University Police that have nothing better to do? Ugly because a grown man made a stupid decision that reflected on his character. This has to be the craziest column you have ever written.

Mark Richt actually suspends his players for multiple games not practices. UGA has the toughest penalties for drinking than any other SEC school. Norte Dame just had 9 players arrested for underage drinking and NONE of the 9 will miss any games. Several SEC players have been arrested for DUI and drinking and I can’t wait to see how many games they are suspended for. My bet is 0 !

This is the type of article that will get the UGA detractors all lathered up. Fine. This writer simply decided to do a negative piece on UGA and so he did. Let em at it. He could pick just about any school and he chose UGA.

Remember, most of these writers are or were employed by the Atlanta Journal and Constitution. The Journal is history. They failed with their collective messages or they would still be in bidness. This old media publication rag has for many many years printed whatever they and Mr Rich and Ivan Allen told them to print. If not directly told by these two, then they got the marching orders from the Cox family.

Richt is in charge of a fine program of mostly great kids. We can all come up with bad things like say, for example, at Tech and LATELY at tech. Decorum will not permit be to do that.

I will say however, that two former GT pilots buzzed the stadium and got busted, shipped to Arabia where they curently pump jet fuel for the Navy Hornets. also DE Hall? How big was that girl hat he whupped on?? How is # 37 doing now and what about my man Joey Hamilton and Reuben ( I been tubing ) Houston and Crittendon? Shoot em up in the NBA says he.

“These are college students, they all drink.” “He can’t control everyone in the program, there’s just too many players.” “He may not be intimidating, but he knows how to coach young men.”

The excuses, they are endless. And ridiculous. A) People get killed by drunk drivers every day. Drinking and driving is bad news, always. And shows a tremendous lack of judgment. B) If your players, even a few, get into trouble, it reflects on you. And UGA has had far too many players come in contact with the law on far too many occasions. C) You better either intimidate your players or have their respect. If you respect your superiors, you carry yourself in a manner and behave in a way that reflects well upon them, not brings embarrassment to them. I submit that Richt possesses neither intimidation over his players or respect from them.

Logic

July 22nd, 2010
3:20 pm

Logically your arguments make no since:
You imply that the actions of the players reflect on Mark Richt which they do to a certain extent: but what really reflects on his character is what type of reaction he makes, and as you stated he has kicked players off the team and suspended them. This implies he is actually doing his job very well unlike many other schools across the country and in the SEC.

As for the Damon Evens comment this is another attempt at failed logic. How is Mark Richt’s reputation hindered by the actions of “his boss.” Are you implying that Richt hired his own boss or controlled his boss and thus condoned his actions. Once again this makes no since.

Lastly, by knocking the quality of recruits at UGA you are implying that the WORLD should shun all those who do not have the Jeff Schultz requisite Character traits … rather in adhering to his faith coach Richt would accept the challenge of trying to mold a boy (by actions) into a Man.

Schultz you are such a waste. If the number of arrests is the defining criteria for a football coach, Brian Kelly should be gone at Notre Dame today. In case you missed it Schultz, 11 – ELEVEN – ND football players were arrested last weekend. I suppose in your world the Apocalypse is on our doorsteps, hmmm?

Arrests for underage drinking, or not knowing how your middle name is listed in your Univ records, hardly rises to the level of felonies, bar brawls, possession of drugs, armed robbery, etc., that other schools have had with football players, or basketball players. Your constant attempts to trash the University of Georgia football program and Mark Richt are pathetic. As for Nick Saban walking in and intimidating a locker room, maybe so, maybe not, I’m left wondering if that is how you judge the quality of a coach. If so, then Jackie Sherril must be the greatest who ever strolled a sideline, hell the bulls headed for the hills when they saw Jackie I can only imagine how a 19 or 20 yr old must have felt knowing that same fate could befall him.

Mark Richt is fine, the Georgia program is fine, the underage consumption is not a reflection upon the character of the program.

Mark Richt is a Great Coach and an even better person. You try to make a problem when there isn’t any problem. UGA has had some player arrested ,yes, but so has FSU, Notre Dame, UT, and probably every other college in the USA! Alcohol is consumed by college students all across america and even most high schools. Under age drinking is only a problem on college campuses because the legal drinking age is 21, not 18, like it should be. When the UGA players start beating up Cops at bars, then point the finger and say UGA has a problem! If it is such a slow news day, get in your car and go interview Coach Dooley at UT and ask him what he is going to do to Da’Rick Rogers legal issues, Now that would be news worthy.

CMR is failing to identify young men for his program that have the moral courage to do the right things.

Jeff,

Most of the time your stuff is worth reading. But this artcile is useless. You’re clogging up MY cyberspace.

Is Richt’s method working? Not any less than Meyer, Saban, Dooley, Kiffin, Johnson, Spurrier, Kelly, etc. evidently . . .

I’m not trying to defend Richt. It’s not only his issue. I’m sure all of these coaches shed blood and tears over how to prevent their players bad behavior or from agent temptations. Not to mention from their parents, the NCAA, school admin, etc.

I’m certainly guilty of doing things that I knew better than to get involved in. My guess is you have, too, along with every other person on the planet. Sometimes the ramifications are severe and somtimes a slap on the wrist. The point is you try and LEARN from your mistakes and not to repeat. Richt makes a great point with Ellerbe. The kid got it together and obviously learned a lesson.

Are college presidents also doing a poor job with their methods? Damon Evans? Gary Moeller? Danny Ford? Mike Garrett? Bobby Petrino? Pete Carroll? To name a few . . . perhaps they should all should never have been hired.

The point is we all (youths and adults) make mistakes and we always will, regardless of what our parents, teachers, coaches or employers preach to us.

So, fire them all. You take over big guy. What’s your solution to all of the issues that these coaches face? Ankle monitors? People make mistakes everyday (such as this article). Evidently, your “head coach” is doing a poor job with his method, also.

Jeesh . . .

Fact is Richt is 2-7 against UF in 9 years. We have below average coaches on the offensive side of the ball outside the offensive line. We have a pathetic S&C program. And our talent is nowhere near that of UF. I would say yes, Mark Richt deserves to be on the hot seat. We expect to be competitive against UF. They have dominated us and embarrassed us the past two seasons and that is not acceptable. I say this to Mark Richt, either beat Florida or find another job.

Mr. Schultz, if you read these comments, which evidently you do, then here is what I have to say to you; you’re pathetic. Yellow journalism at its best. What, exactly, is your “article” about? Exactly how does Damon Evan’s bad choices in life reflect on the head football coach? Absolutely fallacious reasoning to fill in a few lines. If your article were a college or high school essay, it would receive an “F.” What is your thesis? Seriously, tell me. Mark Richt handles his program with class and tact, and a wisdom which two-bit “sportswriters” like yourself cannot even begin to fathom. Anybody, and I mean anybody with a high school diploma, could sit behind a typewriter and make up stupid, contrived drivel such as what you wrote. Have you tried your hand at romance novels or super secret spy stories. Your flair for the melodramatic is obvious, but if I were you, I’d shy away from serious editorials such as you have attempted here. Pick on Billy Graham, Mother Teresa, or Jesse Jackson. Or just write about the game of football. On second thought, you’d better not — nobody would read it.

It’s sort of a moot point what Richt thinks or does about it. He’s doing what he thinks is right, given what he has to achieve.

When you have as much pressure to win as SEC coaches do, you have to take some risks. You have some top-tier programs that can get the cream of the crop yet not take many character risks – but at every level below that, many of the 4 and 5 star recruits have risk factors. Even Notre Dame has had some issues… Ohio State had the Maurice Clarrett issue (and still does)…

This will go on until the administration at UGA has had enough of it, then it will act.

Unfortunately we have no other choices for news other than the AJC, so this gives hacks like Schultz free rein to draw fire with negative, shallow and unprincipled articles like this one. The Atlanta Times shoulda/coulda/woulda

July 22nd, 2010
4:50 pm

In 1964 I had a huge Atlanta Times newspaper route. At that time, The Times was going to be the conservative answer to the AJC folks and it simply could not get the local merchants, all liberals, to support it with advertsing and so it died. They endorsed Barry Goldwater for POYUS in 64 and from that point on, I was a solid 14 year old conservative and I have never looked back.

The AJC is a rag that I have always read …..even when The Times failed. Now, I get it here on line. I at least do not pay for it and when they pester me with a phone solicitation, I tell them that I canned them because they are too liberal.

These writers? The are trying to eak out a living, bad mouthing UGA and any SEC school, so as to build a fan base. They are the Ralph McGill of sports writers and I know that they will be honored to be in the same breath with Mr McGill, although I rarely, rarely ever agreed with him and his Eastern TN take on southerners and southern lifestyle.

Why are you reading AND RESPONDING to his writing if it is such “trash”? The man is giving his opinion. If you’re happy with the job Richt has done, then good for you. There are others that feel he needs to be more competitive given all the resources he has. Still others feel he is not fit for the job because of his lack of discipline. All are entitled to their opnions. Doesn’t make one more right than the other. The only one that really matters is Adams. If he’s happy with Richt then he will continue to be the coach at UGA. If he grows tired of the off-field issues and the results on the field then the seat will get hot.
Don’t shoot the messenger. He’s not employed to paint you guys a pretty picture of a lovely scene that does not exist. He’s paid to write HIS OPINION.

Jeff, Saban wasn’t full of BS yesterday. After reading your rant on his comments, I watched the entirety (about 12 minutes) of his Q&A with the media and he was completely reasonable, while your column was virtually foaming at the mouth with hatred. Saban made the point that only a handful of agents were the problem, that most were professional. He praised Derek Dooley and said Vince Dooley was one of the all-time great college football coaches.

Your column on Saban was about as accurate a representation of the spirit of his remarks as the hit job the conservative blogger did on Shirley Sherrod. You brought all the nuance, balance and accuracy that we’ve come to expect from Rush LImbaugh or Keith Olbermann.

July 22nd, 2010

UGA fans are usually also fans of other SEC schools during the bowl season and maybe a chosen one or two othr schools, like I follow TX Tech because of a family member. I am a fan of only college football. If UGA wins a NC that is great ………it does not add one dime of worth to my almost 39 year old diploma. Not a dime, does a lack of NCs lately is indicated.

The ones that bad mouth UGA, Richt and “no NC’s in 400 years,” well, they never attended a major university. There are some schools that have never won a conference tiitle or the NC and so UGA is in pretty good company with their titles and one, two or three NCs. I’ll take it.

Bank accounts, PE ratios, mortgage balances vs. REAL EQUITY, golf scores are not impacted one bit as to whether UGA has won a game or a NC in the last 200 years. Being a fan is for life.

Most of the bloggers here go out and purchase a new jersey when such and such a school wins the NC, then next year, they show up at their local mall with another school’s jersey. Now that is classless but they simply do not get it. Being a real fan, and alum, vs. simply wearing a jersey, is what it is all about.

Gooooooooooo Dogs.

Schultz is right. You are all Mark Richt apologists. If you can’t see that the inmates are running the asylum and that is reflected in their undisciplined play on the field as well as off the field, then you are a bunch of blind homers. Every bossman does not have to be an ahole to get respect. That’s what you hire aholes to do for you. It’s called delegation.

Grantham, I think, will light a fire in the players, and can fill the role of enforcer. We got rid of three wimp coaches and replaced them with some intensity.

Jeff Jeff Jeff… you gotta know you sensationalized this one & did everything you could to paint a negative light on Richt & indirectly place every issue on his shoulders while suggesting he’s soft & not doing enough to either avoid or solve the “ugliness”.

You poo poo’d this one & lose a grade of respect.

He’s kicked the bad eggs off the team for goodness sakes. What else can any coach in the world do to send a message to the rest of his players what the consequences are for being a bad egg? There’s absolutely nothing else that’s reslistic.

You could have & should have worded this much different. “A HOT summer for Richt… Learn what he’s doing to chill it out.”

If Schultz had been a coach rather than a Journalist his article would have read a little differently.
I coached high school football for forty years ,and had some of the same problems that coach Richt has had. They are decisions sometimes that come from the heart you make them and sometime they are right sometime they are wrong. When a former player comes back one day a tells you he is a better person for having gone through your program it means so much more than your won, loss record. Drinking, will be a problem in college athletics as long as the drink is sold. It is a problem in High School athletics. Give me an athlete who drives a pick up carries a shotgun in his gun rack and sometimes drinks a beer and I will win ballgames.

Jeff your article lacks a solution. You are very opinionated when it comes to Richt’s leadership. But you offer no help, no solution, and no opinion on how Richt might “solve” the arrests and losses that you mention in your article. I can sense your frustration but you offer Coach Richt and your readers no solution and no help. Suppose you had two kids who played football for two different coaches. One of your kids learned to make right choices in life out of fear because he was intimated by his coach. The other learned to make right choices in life out of respect for his coach because he was led by a man of integrity. In the end, who will be a better football player? Who will be a better man? Which one is more important?

Bradley,

Decide if you think Richt is a man of tremendous character who UGA fans should be proud of, or that he is an impetent, clueless leader with no teeth in his dog bite. You have written numerous articles after victories or off the field incidents praising Richt and the man he is. Then you go poking him in the eye over things that are out of his hands. UGA has a police force hell-bent on watching and catching UGA football players. The NCAA is probing as many schools as possible involving unaccountable sports agents.

I understand the summer is slow and you need to provide filler articles but quit firing shots at our coach! If you want to find something wrong with Mark Richt then stretch a little further!

I have written for three years that being a player’s buddy is the worst thing a coach can do at college level. Dooley learned that (remember “Dump Dooley”) the hard way. He took the tough road and became a huge success.

I don’t really sense a change in Richt from last season and that should concern all of us. Yes, he unloaded players who broke rules (and laws) but it took him two years too long to unload Martinez and he still has Bobo.

I really believe he has this season to make his salt. Unless this season is spectacularly bad he’ll be given one more. If no major accomplishments (remember the talent we now have) are accomplished by that time surely the man must go.

SC Boy: Your comments are ridiculous. South Carolina has had dozens of players arrested under Spurrier. Garcia’s still with the program after multiple alcohol-related offenses. Your starting tight end is a player who actually was in attendance at the fabled agent party in Miami (unlike AJ Green, who was at home in Summerville). Sorry, but Spurrier’s not untainted in all of the ugliness here.

And Jeff: if your goal is to sell newspapers (or virtual newspapers), I guess you’ve succeeded. Lots of responses here. I suppose Damon’s behavior is Richt’s fault. I suppose all of the marijuana smoke that seems to hang over the Georgia Tech program is CPJ’s fault. And I suppose that this simplistic, half-witted, sensationalistic and ultimately pathetic excuse for a journalistic exercise is your fault. This last attribution I can establish causality for without any equivocation whatsoever.

I think at times like these a Head Ball Coach tends to get more “hands on”. That can be a good thing.

The way people go on here you would think they beleive Richt has the same persona on the practice field that he has in public or on TV. I’ll bet some of his former player’s have tales to tell.

My high school ball coach was the nicest man you would ever want to meet…unless you were meeting him for the first time on the football field.

One night at practice somebody stepped on my hand and broke it. When I told Coach he said “Tell me about it next week son, I’ve got a ballgame Friday night”. I was horse-faced with my middle finger hanging limply. I finished the practice and then headed on over to the hospital.

He apologized to me and called my mama the next day. I would of went one-on-one in the board drill with Mt. Cody for that man.

But I do love a good SEC/ACC blog where everybody’s basically saying our thugs are not as bad as your thugs….very entertaining. The VolNation forum is really funny right now with so many Vol fans trying to justify the fact that one of their players put a policeman in the hospital….if they can just find a way to have all their thugs on the field on opening day at Neyland Stadium all will be good…forget society and laws, etc. LOL

I’m a UGA grad who follows the program from halfway across the country. I’ve never felt compelled to post a comment, but today I just can’t stop myself. I’m amazed at some of some of this journalist’s comments. If I didn’t know better, I’d think he was a 15-year old. How do you expect Richt to act? And do you really believe you can control the actions of all these young people? “We can talk about how a coach, who has given a thousand speeches and made a thousand threats, may be on a remote tropical island while his quarterback is drinking himself into oblivion and groping a woman in a small-town bar. But does it really matter?” Yes, it does matter. As is true in any leadership position in any industry, you are required to react to adversity, make adjustments and move forward. I would love to see how Schultz would react in Richt’s shoes. I’m sure it’s easy, right Jeff? There is no doubt in my mind you would take UGA to a new level. There would be zero student-athlete incidents, a perfect graduation rate, and multiple national championships. Wow, I can’t wait. Fire Richt!

This is same crap I hear every time I run into a fan from one of those wonderful northern or midwestern schools. They are so proud of their state colleges and yet they choose to live here in Georgia as opposed to their wonderful home states. “Another one of your boys in trouble again? Wow, you must be proud.” Yes, it certainly is unbelievable that BEER + COLLEGE + HOT GIRLS = TROUBLE. I guess at other schools this isn’t an issue.

What might have actually made this an interesting piece of journalism would be for someone on the AJC staff to do a little research, go back maybe 3-5 years, and list the number of infractions, suspensions, arrests, and dismissals by team by year and by head coach for all the division I-A schools or even just the SEC. You guys should have that on-hand, right – you are so good at being fair and balanced when reporting this stuff. Then we could compare apples to apples instead of this half-@ss brain dump. But I forgot, your company probably can’t afford to keep resources like that on staff. I would do it for you if I didn’t have a real job to do every day.

First and foremost I am a Tech fan but I have the utmost respect for Mark Richt who is a man of faith and good character. He cares about his players and I am sure feels pain and failure every time one of his charges screws up and ends up getting suspended or dropped from the program. Unfortunately too many athletes look at all of their good fortune as an entitlement and not as an opportunity for growth and advancement. Non athletes do the same thing in college but they are squandering their parents money or HOPE scholarship money but its the same mind set. Nick Saban may win more games but Mark Richt never has to worry about his ethics.

Sorry Jeff, I think you’re stretching on this one and you are way off the mark. Georgia is the same as any elite athletic university. These top athletes have a tendency not to be the most disciplined out side of sports. But is it anymore than the typical student? Again most of the incidents are minor alcohol offenses, if this happened to a normal student there would be no repercussions from the university. I for one think Richt is doing one hell of a job, he can’t control everything.

Great example with Ellerbe..yes they are in the business of educating kids and trying to mold them into adults. Most people thought that he had a chip on his shoulder or he was a thug, but I had the chance to know the man behind the face mask. We all make mistakes, but only a few are able to bounce back like Dannell Ellerbe…..and to top it off he was one of the most intelligent in his signing class….don’t be so quick to write a kid off that makes a mistake.

Business as usual…..just another 8-4 or 7-5 season and back to Shreveport. Everyone in Athens just buries their heads in the sand and points to someone else other than CMR.

Saban is back and getting better everyday (i.e. Mal Moore a good AD), Meyer continues to pound you and own you year after year (another good AD Foley), and well, you basically you cannot open on the road against an average D-1 opponent without getting embarrassed.

CMR is your problem, but this stems from an amatuer driven/no pressure program in Athens. Matter of fact, most of the people who easily attack and laugh at your program know more about your program than the average Dog fan.

You and the rest of the regional sports media are very quickly losing what credibility you have left with a dying newspaper. A.J. Everyone in Athens can only talk about 1980 and Buck Belue….move on folks…move on.

You’ve had Ferraris in the garage for the past 10 years, but no one knows how to drive them. It would not matter who you bring into coach this program, because the fan base is just to cocky and mouthy for any good coach to last.

The stress test for your program was when Kirby Smart rejected your DC offer and remained in Alabama. Yes, Alabama upped the Kitty, but UGA would have matched or made him comfortable, but he did know want to get involved with a broken program, when he is already at a program that plays for titles. “When you can’t bring your own former players back (i.e. Smart and Muschamp), then your program has serious flaws.

Heck, even Bryant knew he had to come back to Alabama when Mama called, and this program had problems back then.

No one likes UGA, not even former players, which speaks volumes. Go ahead, keep burying your heads in the sand and watch it continue to go down the drain.

SIGNED them.

And, then they get arrested at NCAA RECORD LEVEL.

And, they fumble at NCAA RECORD LEVEL.

And, they throw interceptions at NCAA RECORD LEVEL.

And, they have penalties at NCAA RECORD LEVEL.

And, they have LOST 5 games the last 4 years to SEC East teams who did NOT even end up in the Top 25 Final AP Poll, even with their win over Coach Richt.

And, we are 3rd vs The SEC East over the last 4 years at 10-10.

And, we are 4th vs The SEC over the last 4 years at 20-12.

And, Coach Richt is # 5 SEC Coach at his current school vs ranked teams over his entire tenure today.

And, we have won 3 of the 11 games vs Top 10 Final AP Poll teams in the Coach Richt Era.

And, we have had for 9 years now of the Coach Richt Era, the dead last coaching staff hired by Coach Richt in America.

How do I expect Coach Richt to act ?

I expect Coach Richt to give Tavarres King the SAME SUSPENSION that he gave to Dontavius Jackson. Tavarres made Dontavius drive his truck so that Tavarres would not subject himself to a possible DUI. Whose truck was it ? Tavarres King’s. Who also, by the way, did NOTHING about his assigned driver of his vehicle leaving the scene of the accident either. Tavarres in addition let a DUI drive his truck with SEVEN (7) children in it. What was Tavarres’ purpose in driving his truck around Athens ? To go get DRUNK in it.

I expect Coach Richt to SUSPEND Branden Smith. Branden took the ID and bought the alcohol causing all the arrests, which included all 7 in the truck either being arrested or having their driver’s license suspended. That’s right. The police suspended Branden Smith’s Driver’s License. For good damn reason.

I expect Coach Richt to SUSPEND Vance Cuff. Vance Cuff is over 21. Vance Cuff gave his ID to Branden Smith, which caused all this.

Montez Robinson certainly when he beat up the little coed the 1st time, should have been kicked off this football team. But, no, he was FORGIVEN. Then, when the next month he went back and beat up her car; Coach Richt then suspended Montez for 2 games. Only when he beat her up a 3rd time repeatedly throwing her to the floor and picking her up and slamming her into the floor at McWhorter Hall did Coach Richt throw him off the team. Even then, Mike Bobo who recruited him here and Coach Richt spent their time in jail forgiving the thug and praying with him. This little gal, a student at UGA, had to leave UGA.

B.S.

For a team 1-3 vs Florida the last 4 years and 1-3 vs 4 lousy horrible vols’ teams the last 4 years too along with 2-2 vs 4 sorry Kentucky teams. We even lost to Vanderbilt when they won 4 games with their win over us.

Every fan at Sanford Stadium BOOS the play calls of Mike Bobo. 38-14 over the last 4 years is # 19 in the nation in won / loss for the # 11 College Football Program in 1-A wins All-Time.

And, this off-the-field B.S. such as the Quarterback recruited by Mike Bobo Zach Mettenberger going on spring break to Valdosta with his guilty of multiple counts of groping an off-duty employee also a student in college there, has got to end.

Instead, AFTER THAT, we forgave him and let him play in the G-Day Game.

B.S.

Look, Coach Richt EXPECTS another arrest / suspension, EXPECTS a fumble, EXPECTS an interception, EXPECTS a penalty – EXPECTS to LOSE at everything he is judged by.

He is a nice guy.

The players take advantage of him, which is why he SIGNS them. They know they can.

Is that hidden subliminally contrary to every word he does state ?

Rennie Curran was a un-recruited player whom we did NOT offer a scholarship to, who came to UGA and later was GIVEN A SCHOLARSHIP to my alma mater.

The Degree is worth millions of dollars.

Rennie Curran did NOT graduate UGA and does NOT have his degree, despite the fact that Coach Richt gave Rennie Curran a SCHOLARSHIP here.

The point is that Rennie Curran does NOT care about a degree.

Get over it, and just enjoy college football for what it is… entertainment.

14-game seasons 9 years is possible 124 wins.

Instead not 124 wins, 90 wins 27 losses.

This is not 1959 when 10 wins meant something when we went 10-1.

This is not 1966 when 10 wins meant something when went 11-1.

We won The SEC Both of those years too.

Lost to South Carolina 14-30 in 1959.

Lost to only Miami 6-7 in 1966.

2010 when 10-win season means no SEC Championship Game.

Our goal is NOT 10-WIN SEASON.

We could have won 124.

We won 90.

We MISSED OUT on 7 SEC Championship Games, didn’t we ?

We won 2, last coming 2005.

This is 2010.

In the meantime, all we do are penalties, fumbles, interceptions, losses, arrests and suspensions.

I do not find that any more entertaining than Coach Richt :

“It’s like, you know [something is] gonna happen,” Coach Richt said Thursday morning. “It’s just like a ballgame. You know there’s going to be a penalty or a turnover, even though you don’t want there to be.”

“Arrests and losses have a cumulative effect,” Jeff Schultz replies.

What are you drinking-you didn’t notice Florida had the most pre-season all SEC players.
Had the juniors not left for the NFL, the Gators would have lapped the dawgs. Also,
you may recall that Florida had the top recruiting cllass in the country last year and
possiblily the best defensive class in the history of the NCAA.

And this year while Ga. leads Florida with 16 commitments to 10, UGA only has 6 4 star
players 37.5%. The Gators on the other hand also have 6 or 60%. Do you understand
quality over quantity. Also this just in the #2 DE end in the country last year just announced he is transferring from Cal to Florida. Now with out a doubt the Gators have the best defensive class in the history of the NCAA. The rich get Richer.

As long 18-21 yr old kids go to college these problems will continue to occur regardless of who the coach is. Same type stuff happened under Dooley, Donnan, and everyone else has coached. Kids do stupid things, get in trouble and either learn from it or they don’t. That simple. For the most part they aren’t doing anything that other students aren’t doing.

Jeff, we’re very sorry if our head coach isn’t a big enough jerk for you. We’re very sorry if he doesn’t yell enough and give you great soundbytes about pimps for you. We’re also very sorry that you’ve kept a running tally of alcohol related arrests among a small group of UGA college students who happen to play football, and that you’re now holding that list against Mark Richt. While we take very seriously the charges against Damon Evans and the kid who was driving under the influence and left the scene, as evidenced by the fact that neither are now involved with UGA athletics, we’re not really that sorry that we have college students who drink, because you did, too. And you know it. Thankfully, you were a geek working for the school paper and not a high-profile athlete. There but for the grace of God and Dungeons and Dragons go you. We’re very sorry that your running total for the “summer” actually goes far back beyond the start of “summer” to make the program look worse. We’ve very sorry that you still have a job writing about sports in our state. We have a solution, though. Take some more journalism classes. It may help.

“Question: Do you get a sense that when Nick Saban walks into a locker room that every one of their players is just a little bit intimidated. If so, do you get that same sense with Richt?”

I think most players would respect either man. Perhaps Richt a bit more because of loyalty and trust factors.

This article struck me as somewhat of a baseless attack piece. Not trying to be overly homey here, but if the agent-party issue is what triggered this article the substantive support for the arguments is quite weak – we don’t really know anything yet as to whether or not the Georgia program will be implicated. Everything else referenced is past history and doesn’t really reflect a lack of coaching leadership or institutional control. It reflects the reality that when you run an NCAA football program you’re going to have to deal with some bad apples in the barrel and a lot of external bad influences on the players – every program has those issues.

Let’s wait and see what comes of this and how Richt and UGA respond, IF there is anything to respond to. Right now, I’d grade Richt a “A” and Saban a “C-” for their responses.

Jeff,
This article is PURE TRASH! Creating a negative spin on Richt’s tenure. Try also looking at the positives and then put that into perspective of all other successful college football programs (DO SOME RESEARCH). Richt is very highly thought of outside of Georgia and I think those that are close to the program are blinded. If you are in any program long enough, you will go through rough patches. I guess you think another coach would do better… That’s truely sad. You have now become a news hype artist ala Mr. Moore.

I understand that the coaching staff are the mentors not only on the field but also as role models, and mentors on basics of everyday life. But at some point these “young men” have to be held accountable for their actions which they are, it`s just magnified due to the fact that they are “high-profile” athletes many young people do stupid things when they are young at colleges all over the U.S. So far from what has been in the media the senior players are doing what they can to police themselves (the team) the coaches are proactive, examples have been made to players of what the consequences are if you screw up. So, Jeff what exactly do you want them to do now? hire babysitters and lock them down for 23 hrs of the day during summer? In my opinion this article is really stretching for attention because SEC Media days is not exciting this year. Why can`t you cover how the dawgs are preparing for the season this year, what recruits are doing, work-outs, etc,etc something the fans WANT to read not this pre season man-drama type stuff. You have produced better material than this.

Shultz. Speak for yourself. Reading these comments, it obvious you are off the mark on how others perceive Richt. So it’s safe to say you are wrong and wasted a lot of peoples time with a a lazy effort. I WOULD be worried if Richt wasn’t there. That should make for a good article since it seems to be closer to reality for most fans. Now do some research old school style and find out how these arrests compare to the overall student body figures or other peer instiutions, both in number and seriousness of the crime. I learned nothing from your effornt than a disrespect for your work.

These kids know right from wrong, period. Richt pounds it into them with constant reinforcement. Ultimately the person is responsible for their own choices & actions. It’s rediculously unreasonable to make Richt culpable for the ones who made the wrong decision.

The bad eggs have been kicked out of the institution. This is the highest degree of punishment Richt can possibly dish out & he’s done it everytime it’s been warranted.

The ones who’ve made mistakes & earned second chances got them. Nobody is perfect, people do make mistakes, learn from them, change, & become better people for it. And if they take it for granted again, they pay ultimate consequences. This is how it’s supposed to be done & this is how Richt does it. If you think otherwise, then you’re an ignorant moron. Journalists like Paul Finnebaum, and shock jocks like Howard Stern are pragmatists. If readership goes up, the article is jutified. Those are the “consequences” that sensationalists conider. They only consider “themselves” and “short term consequences”.

But what about the “long term consequences” of shock jock sensationalism on “others”? Does it benefit all constituents: the writer, the fans, the AJC, the universities, the coaches, the players, etc.

The long term effects of shock jock sensationalism is that we always deal with minutia, and never deal with the larger questions that matter, it’s not much different than the way a playboy lives–gratifying senses, evading existential or social issues of greater importance.

It reeks of shallowness, and evades depth.

A few select journalists, thankfully, not most, end up making 2 grave errors.

1- Scapegoating
They find a problem, and wanting an easy quick solution, attribute all the blame to 1 person.

It’s at worst false and at best simplisitic, to link Richt with ALL the negatives (Damon Evans, 3% of his players, etc.) while NOT linking the positive actions (of the 97%, and the positives about the university) to Richt.

2- Propaganda
They leave out big portions of the story, and only present 1 side.

For every 1 player under Richt that goes “bad” under Richt (serious arrests like DUI or Battery), 33 stay “good”. To represent the 1, without the context of the 33, is propaganda.

What about stories of redemption, like Ellerbe, who made a mistake, and then reformed?
