Mark Richt is trying to turn Georgia's program around. An NCAA inquiry doesn't help.
(UPDATED at 7:45 p.m.)
Georgia can finally count itself in the same company as Alabama and Florida — just not in the way everybody hoped.
According to our Tim Tucker, the NCAA has contacted Georgia to inform the school of an “inquiry” on campus.
This is never good news.
Georgia associate athletic director Claude Felton emailed a statement, reading: “I have been asked numerous times over the last two days whether we had been contacted by the NCAA and the answer has been ‘no.’ … Late Wednesday afternoon, the University of Georgia received a call from the NCAA requesting permission to conduct an inquiry on the UGA campus. Athletic Association officials indicated that full cooperation would be provided. The NCAA has requested that UGA officials, coaches, and/or student-athletes decline further comment until the inquiry is completed.”
The best case scenario for the Bulldogs is that this inquiry goes nowhere, because if coach Mark Richt suddenly has to deal with a full-fledged investigation and even the potential of NCAA sanctions, after last year’s down season, it could hamper his efforts to move the program forward.
No reason was given for the inquiry. But given recent news, it could be connected with investigations into illegal contact between various college players and agents. Players from Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina been linked with a party hosted by an agent in South Miami Beach earlier this summer. If the players were compensated for the trip in any way — travel, lodging, meals — it would negate their amateur status and constitute an NCAA violation. Alabama defensive lineman Marcell Dareus reportedly is among those under investigation.
Former Florida offensive lineman Maurkice Pouncey, a first-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers, has been accused of taking $100,000 from an agent following last year’s SEC title game and before the Sugar Bowl, which also would constitute an NCAA violation. Pouncey denies the charge.
UPDATE: Stories on SI.com and TMZ.com both referenced wide receiver A.J. Green about an agent’s Memorial Day weekend party in Miami. Green denies being at the party in the SI.com story. The TMZ.com story says Georgia “ is investigating” whether Green attended.
A source said one potential interview subject is junior receiver A.J. Green, but if enforcement officials plan to ask Green about the now-infamous party in Miami Beach, Fla., on Memorial Day weekend that prompted the inquiries at North Carolina and South Carolina and an internal investigation at Alabama, they won’t learn much.
Reached by phone Tuesday night — almost a day before the NCAA contacted Georgia — Green told SI.com that he did not attend the party. Green, who is considered on of the nation’s best receivers, said a Georgia compliance official asked him Tuesday if he attended the party. Green said he spent Memorial Day weekend at home in Summerville, S.C.
“I never went to South Beach,” Green told SI.com.
TMZ has learned the University of Georgia is investigating whether football star A.J. Green partied on South Beach at the same bash that’s launched investigations at three other colleges.A source closely connected to Georgia’s athletic department tells TMZ the wide receiver allegedly attended a party at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami on Memorial Day weekend. Partying alone isn’t a crime under NCAA rules — Green is 21 years old — but if someone (like an agent or financial adviser) paid for anything related to Green’s trip, that could be a violation.
Agents and their pursuit of college players dominated the first day of SEC media days.
Alabama coach Nick Saban referred to agents as pimps.
Florida coach Urban Meyer called agents “predators.”
Call them what you like, they’re the major story right now.

Jeff, I asked Mr. College Football this same question (no response yet): If USC, Bama or any other school for that matter, is forced to vacate bowl wins, shouldn’t that also mean they should return the money they received for winning that particular bowl game?

Not really concerned yet. I guess it just depends on what the penalties will be if players had contact with the agent and/or received a paid trip to Miami.
If it’s automatic career ending it will be really bad for everyone and that will be concerning. If it’s a suspension and repayment of the money then I can live with that. Just all depends. Really too early to tell right now.

Jeff, this party took place during a Freaknik-like event in South Beach over Memorial Day weekend. Do a search on “Black Beach Weekend 2010 South Beach” and you’ll find plenty of stories and pictures. It stands to reason that there were a lot of athletes from a lot of SEC and ACC schools down there. I’ll be surprised if a lot of schools aren’t caught up in this in another week or two.

Not that big of a deal if its related to the agent dealings because it looks like a lot of players from a lot of schools got tripped up and went to this party.
From what I’ve in other reports up to 45 different players from various schools showed up at the party. Word out of Bama is that Dareus and about 15 other players from various schools showed up, found out an agent was behind the party, and left. Dareus will no doubt be suspended by Saban though as will a lot of players from a lot of different schools. I’ve a feeling the NCAA is going to come down a lot harder on the agent than on the schools. What are they gonna do? Put 45 schools on probation?
If you’re Georgia you’re hoping that its nothing more than a player attending the party same as a lot of other players. If its something else than that’s a whole different issue.
A handful of dawg posters on the other blogs were taking their various digs at Bama and Florida for Dareus and Pouncey having contact with the agent and the party. Those of you that were having a good time flaming on Bama and UF can now take your foots out of your mouths.

I agree JJ. Not concerned at the moment.
If a player was dumb enough to receive compensation, then I’ll be worried about depth.
But until proven otherwise, i could care less about the investigation. It sounds like a due-diligence search by the NCAA. They don’t want defamation suits brought against them. That’s why they can’t even hint at a purpose for the investigation. They’re grasping at straws. Trying to see what mud pops up.
Anyway, if there’s mud. Then so be it. Some player screwed up big time.

Greg,
Most likely this NCAA investigation is about the party and its probably not that big of a deal. But you don’t know that for sure. Better to just wait and see and hope its just an inquiry into a player or 2 who showed up at the party and that the end result is a player suspsenion for a few games just like what will likely happen everywhere else.

Very little concern at the moment. Given the recent spate of violations in the region, it wouldn’t surprise if the NCAA is just randomly fishing at adjacent programs to see if they can uncover anything. Probably means nothing and will just be a pain in the neck. Like an IRS audit.

Two days ago you played down the “Pouncey gets $100k” story by saying it wasn’t anything for Georgia fans to get excited about, and that the worst case scenario for the Gators was the vacating a meaningless bowl win.
But today, you rush to post a blog entry on UGA announcing an inquiry by the NCAA regarding a Georgia player simply attending a party in Miami. This, you now inform us, is “never good news” and could setback Richt’s efforts to “move the program forward.”
But if the worst that may happen to Florida is forfeiting a bowl game because a player took $100k, then what could possibly be the worst that could happen to UGA if a player attended a party? The player has to sit out a couple of games? Not really worth your breathless tone, is it?
Regardless, I’m sure you and Bradley will now go into customary tag-team mode and hammer this topic for the next few weeks. It’s all about the clicks, baby.

Hopefully, nothing is discovered that is being done by any of these universities. If the kids received improper benefits, then they should all take their medicine. Whatever, each school decides is appropriate. It’s never fun having the NCAA “digging” at your school. Kind of like when the IRS decides to audit you. You think you did everything right, but their opinion is the only one that seems to matter. Scary stuff.

I am a GT fan, but I am a little torn here. While on one hand it’s incredibly selfish for these high profile players to go to an agent party, if they knew it was, knowing that they could be ruled ineligible and thus leaving their team in a pickle. However, if they didn’t know and it was completely innocent then they shouldn’t be ruled ineligible, but somehow else reprimanded to remind them and future players to think about things like this first.
FWIW, I don’t think AJ Green would have been there, and fellow GT fans, I would suggest we not flame UGA fans until something like this. Remember, UGA fans were flaming UA and UF players just hours ago for this, and now they aren’t laughing much anymore. Let’s learn that lesson.

These kids know what they can and can’t do. Get caught, pay the price. I say yank their eligibility. And that goes for Green too if he was in fact a part of the fray. I have no sympathy for these athletes. They live a charmed life even though the game is dangerous to their health. The only way it stops is if people (players, agents, boosters, and all) pay some sort of legal price. The NFL needs to step in and help too.
What a mess. God bless us this season. We can’t get out of our own way. When was the last time we went into a season with only on the field issues.

Here’s the difference between the Georgia situation, and Bama and Florida’s situation: Bama and Florida reported their incidents to the NCAA. In contrast, the NCAA called Georgia and told them they were coming. Not good for the Bulldogs. Not good at all. If Bulldog fans were giving Bama a hard time…well, you’re looking REALLY foolish now. I wonder if the NCAA will ask Georgia why they didn’t self report like Bama did?

Contrary to what one poster said above, this is no nightmare at all for Bama. Everyone knows the drill…if Dareus’s expenses were paid, he makes restitution, maybe he sits a couple of games, and that’s it. Bama will be praised by the NCAA for self reporting and being on top of the situation.
On the other hand, the NCAA called Georgia. Let that sink in for a minute. The NCAA called Georgia and said, “We’re coming to your campus to investigate.” You want to talk nightmare? There’s your nightmare. Why didn’t Georgia call the NCAA first?

Heyward, if you go back and look, that’s what Saban has done in every incident since he’s arrived. Saban suspended the Textbook Five on their own the morning of the 2007 Tennessee game. He suspended Andre Smith for the Sugar Bowl, and he suspended Julio and Ingram before the 2009 season. The Textbook Five didn’t play again until they made restitution and were cleared by the NCAA, and they missed a few games. Smith may have been cleared, but Saban didn’t play him because he was less than 100% cooperative with the investigation. Julio and Ingram didn’t play until they made restitution and were cleared by the NCAA, not more than a day or two before the VaTech game.
I’d like to think that we learned our lesson a long time ago. I don’t think that most Bama fans wish Georgia any harm in this deal; I certainly don’t. I don’t see Georgia as being one of our bitter rivals, and I usually pull for Georgia against everyone else.

If AJ was there and the NCAA comes down hard on Georgia, Richt, even though not his fault, had better hope for a much improved season. If not things could get ugly come January. But this agent thing is something all college football fans, no matter what school we pull for, should be together on because it threatens the sport we all love. Would love to see one of these agent fellas caught on campus and roughed up a little bit . . . in addition to some type of suspension or ban. No one would ever question the credibility of TMZ as a news source. They rank right up there with the National Inquirer, POAD and the AJC when it comes to quality journalism.
Sources tell me that athletic departments at every school that participates in NCAA football are conducting investigations to determine if their players participated in the party in Miami. The fact that most of the investigations consist of nothing more than a coach asking “Hey guys, did any of you go to the party in Miami on Memorial Day weekend?”, is irrelevant. When you have page views to count, that’s as good as a full scale investigation.

Jeff — We get it, if you are newspaper columnist or report a plane crash is a lot more thrilling and makes your job easier than 1000 planes landing safely. However, you are really working yourself up in a lather in trying to propel this ‘Richt on the hot seat’ narrative. This is especially rich, “if coach Mark Richt suddenly has to deal with a full-fledged investigation and even the potential of NCAA sanctions.” Yeah, and if the Russians launch warheads our way we will be at war. If the Sun burns itself out, we will all be very cold. If the Internet shuts down, newspapers will have their business model back. All of these things are very, very unlikely to occur, but let us not allow facts or probability get in the way of what would be really fun times for the news biz. You can continue to gin up these ridiculous scenarios about a “full-fledged investigation”, or you can actually do some reporting and research like what is being done at the following…. http://blogs.onlineathens.com/node/2116
Where AJ Green is quoted by the ABH….”‘I was home that weekend,’ said the junior from Summerville, S.C. ‘There was a buzz going around that I went. I talked to them a couple of days ago. Like two days ago’……Asked if he had ever been to Miami, Green said: ‘Never.’”

By Bama fan: “I’ve a feeling the NCAA is going to come down a lot harder on the agent than on the schools.”
The NCAA has no way to come down on the agent. The NCAA has no legal authority. In this case, the schools aren’t in jeopardy because no games have been played since the par-tay.
What should, and probably will happen is that this will be the end of college football for any that got transportation, meals or lodging paid for. They have lost their amateur status.

Cannot sleep so decide to blog. AJC….your journalist ability has reached an all time low. Relying on TMZ as a source. What happened to the journalist who would actually write an article or investigate and report. You guys are basically pulling stories and sources off of web urls. There is software that will do that for free. The AJC should save themselves the sports departments salaries.
As to Georgia…doubt AJ was there. If he was he probably paid his own expense. If so AJ dont pull a DJ and lie to the NCAA. Just tell the truth.
As for agents. The NCAA and the NFL needed a plan of attack. And if the NFL wont play ball, they the colleges should ban all agents from campus, and ban the NFL from any on campus testing or combines.
But as everything else this comes down to $. Until the players get a cut of that jersey money with their name and # on it, that butt load of yearly TV money, and that crazy gate from ticket prices, you will always have agents handing players early money.
Because the cold hard fact is this players are usually from poor families. And if they want to take a girlfriend to a night out, it will have to be Dinner and a Movie on TBS,,,,but they dont have an money and the NCAA and the universities do not give them the time off from the game or the ability to earn any extra money even if they had the time. Curran had it right, a Pell Grant is not enough.
For years this schools have used players as chum for their money shark. Play em hard, play em long, and then when they are hurt hey…..feed them to the money shark,,,and get another 30 recruits. Question….why does the damn shoe money go the coach, is his foot in the that NIKE? No it is the players. And if the player does not like that shoe…tough …coach is getting $500,000 a year so put the darn thing on.
If the player is fortunate he gets a 4 year degree, if not,,,,tough. and oh yeah a hand full make it to the NFL or arena football.
And we collectively wonder why agents get the power they have over the players. Because to the players the agents seem to be the only ones that give a rats backside about the players. The fans….all of us, we just want to win. The coaches, they just want to make 3.5 million a year. The schools just want their BCS check. ESPN and AJC just want their headline so they can sell ad space and subscriptions. And the agents …to the players here is someone who will give me a few bucks so that I can go to Wendy’s and take my girl out to go see Avatar.
Honestly….maybe we need to point the finger at ourselves. We fund all of this damn nonsense.
Okay….now back to my fan status.( I have stirred the pot long enough…hey like the AJC).

Seriously TMZ? That is the source that claims he was at a party. That doesn’t worry me at all. Green has more than earned his stripes and this would be highly out of character for him.
Tough road ahead for Georgia? And the reason is? Just because they want to talk to the school and some of the athletes doesn’t mean anything happened. Why don’t you guys take a deep breath and wait until the investigation is finished.

After the story broke late Wednesday of the NCAA’s inquiry at Georgia, former Bulldogs linebacker Rennie Curran, who gave up his final season of college eligibility to enter this year’s NFL draft, addressed the matter on his Twitter account.
“Can’t believe how hard the ncaa is trying to crack down on college athletes,” Curran tweeted. “How can [you] expect someone not to look to outside sources…”
Continuing on his next tweet, Curran wrote: “… when there are video games being made of you, your jerseys getting sold, your family is struggling [and] you don’t even get a dime except pell [grant].”
Curran is obviously admitting guilt. What a freaking moron.

You Dawg fans who keep repeating “30-24″ like a mantra enjoy yourselves all you want. The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.
UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.
Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is practically worthless.
Jan Kemp exposed the crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or self-discipline.
The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against dummy-athletes, it’s usually no contest.
It’s pretty pathetic to see UGA fans who typically have never been within miles of a college classroom and who live or die with UGA’s weekly results on the football field.
So keep on posting your “30-24″ all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old job back at the Waffle House before your unemployment checks stop coming.

Can’t see how a party in May 2010 would cause a need to vacate wins prior unless the “relationship” between a play & agent was prior to any games. I think that “vacating wins” is a bunch of bunk anyway.
I imagine that cmr wants to get tot he bottom of this before AJ plas a snap this year though. He could be deemed ineligible and cost uga wins or put on some type probation.
I have to agree with Saban & Meyer about agents.
R Curran is just incriminating himself based on his tweets.
The student athletes are there to get an education. that is their pay. The fact that many choose notto take advantage of that is their own fault. Yes, the schools do make money off the sale of jerseys, TV and the rest of the marketing. The atletes would not have the opportunity to showcase themselves if the school were not also paying the way for all those athletes that they also have to pay to have educated, fed and housed…the ones that block, kick, hold the PAT, or even just hold the dummys at practice so the stars can get face time and be marketed to the next level. The stars will get their payday, but they should be preparing for the possiblity that they won’t by taking advantage of the education opportunity…even if it is uga.
I get it that they feel like they are bing taken advantage of by “footbal mills.” The fact is that some of them will score contracts that will be equal to the profit of the institution during their time of training. If they have a beef it is with the NFL or NBA that restrict their being allowed to “work” until a certian age. Oh yeah, most of them weren’t ready to play at that level when they came out of High School.
Many of the ones that do come out early end up blowing the millions they make because they aren’t mature enough to handle the money when they come out. The agents that “pimp” them end up keeping more of what players earn than the players do. A Fool & His Money are soon parted.
I could go on all day on this…bottom line is that the cry baby athletes are completely selfish. “I want mine now.” People don’t appreciate that you have to learn, then work, then earn. Not just in sports…every walk of life. Then if they aren’t willing to learn and work, they want the government to take care of them.
Sorry, I digress!

You know very little about pro scouting and the draft if you think that. He was a 15-25 pick. If he missed an entire season, this most certainly could not him down to the bottom. Plus they have that change in pay starting this year in the nfl for rookies. I know you really want to believe him but someone has proof he was there. JB,
I don’t think that uga is a bad school acedemically. I really don’t think it ever has been. They have produced many well educated men and women that have inturn made a lot of money. I would never argue that ou can’t get a good education there. The problem lies in that historically you can also go to uga and slack off and still get a degree.
The competition to get into uga as well as any other school in Georgia that has been brought by the HOPE Scholarships has limited the number of slackers that actually get into uga. The number of degrees and the varying levels of difficulty to get those degrees still allows for the slacker to get through.
Athletes often do get a pass on the “competition” part of the entrance requirements. The requirements are still lower at uga than at Tech and some others. After the athletes get into uga, they can then take advantage of the much less demanding avenues of study that uga provides.
Tech has less demanding degrees than others. Athletes do tend to gravitate towards those degrees. Tose or that degree is Mangement. The rub is that Industrial Management at Tech is on par or even considered by many to be more difficult than a Business degree at uga. business at uga is considered a pretty difficult avenue.
Yes, things have changed at uga since Jan Kemp exposed the program. You should be proud that she did. uga didn’t need to sink to that level to acheive success. Somethings are still the same though. There are definitely some much easier routes to take at uga and still pass than there are or have ever been at Tech. You can’t tell me, at least not with a straight face that this is not the case.
Congrats to you for having gone to uga and taken one of the more difficult courses of study and achieving success in your life beyond the dawgs winning on Saturdays. At least I hope you have.

I did go to Tech. It is a very tough school. Admittedly I would likely have enjoyed and done better at uga. As a Realtor now, having gone to uga might have been the better play. But I do alright
Why did I choose Tech then? I thought I wanted to be an engineer…for about two quaters
I also grew up in south Georgia as a Tech fan all my life. uga fans drove me to the passionate level of hate I have for uga…the school. I still like my friends that went to uga. They are fine folks. They just went tot he dark side.
I think Tech will continue to do well under CPJ. The years of going 7-4 and losing to uga 7 out of 8 years are probably gone for the near future. Tech will always have the difficulty of the narrow band of degrees to choose from that will make recruiting a struggle. The guys that we get will be winners though. Not that uga’s aren’t. Ours will tend to have less ego and “me first” mentalities…as a general rule. We will have a few. I think CPJ will mold them well.

The problem is as mentioned by Mr. CFB all of the contact is by predatory agents who are small time losers that can’t do it the right way.
They do need to have more contact with good agents earlier on so they know how to maximise thier earning ability and how to make an informed decision on when to jump.
They need to modify the rules to let reputable agents have contact and that naturally will help to weed out a lot of the shady dealings and bad sports agents who wind up screwing thier client and their client’s school.

These morons are going to talk to AJ because he’s an exceptional player. He didn’t even talk to that self-important self-reporting POS Chip Towers that was clearly trying to cause trouble.. If these guys that work for the Atlanta paper could actually write and report, this sort of abject speculation wouldn’t see the light of day.
And really, TMZ as a news source? Yeah, they are a step up from Fox so far as integrity and trustworthiness are concerned, but that’s like one small step out of just making stuff up.
They think Sara Palin speaks English, and what’s worse, they actually seem to understand the incomprehensible things she Tweets. (They don’t, either, but they have to act like they do.) As far as Pope Urban is concerned, he’s just getting ahead of the curve, like Pete Carroll. Rams next year? Maybe this all contributed to his heart/panic/conscience attack. Saban, on the other hand, proved beyond a doubt he’s mercenary, and incapable of coaching in the NFL.
This bidness of Saban and Urban acting like agents have Hansen’ disease, and they think they caught a non-communicable disease from smoking Pete Carroll’sHavanas is almost hilarious. I guess there’s no offense taken by their own agents.
At UGA, kids buy beer when they aren’t supposed to. Whoofreakinghooo. Kids in college drink beer. Athens cops have pictures of UGA players and target them.
Sometimes Athens cops recognize them as football players and jack them up beyond anything normal. I lived there years and years, and I know this for a fact. Barney Fife multiplied. And the University Police think they work for Tom Cruise preventing crimes before they’re conceived of. And every one of them wishes he could have played football.
Please apply the Gertrude Stein rule. There’s no there there, unless you make it up.
And the rent-a-guards at GT, they never got emoluments from agents, right? They saw agents more than they ever saw classrooms. What a crock.

Since the colleges are farm teams for the Pro’s,
And since most footbll players will not graduate from college,
And since most footbll players given the opportunity to go to the Pro’s could care less about their college,
Therefore what is taking place with the NCAA is all in a days work.
And furthermore, the colleges should just take money from the Pro’s, pay the footbll players on a graded scale of ability and let them forget taking up a seat in a classroom.
Alumni and football groupies then can buy tickets without having to be held hostage by the atlhetic association and their money reguest for good seats.

It was the defense that was solved by uga last year, notthe offense. If Superman, I mean Nesbitt, had not gone down, it may have been different…nahh…the defense was non-existant. I hope that issue has been solved. Note: It didn’t take CPJ three years to cut the DC loose.
CMR’s loyalty to Martinez likely costs uga a NC the year before last.
I think that WR would be well served to come to Tech. One of uga’s all time greats would have been phnominal in this offense. Heinz Ward is exactly the type of WR that would thrive in the Tech TO. BeBe Thomas was drifted high not only on the strength of his numbers, but because he was a complete WR. He wasn’t afriad to block.
I think you will see more passing anyway. Not because they have to, but because they can.

From what I understand, if you are following AJ’s twitter page, you’re able to go back to memorial day weekend & see where he tweeted he was in Summerville with his family.
Now unless he’s psychic or constructed this outlandish plan to have his mother tweet that for him from Summerville with his own cell phone just to give him a fake alibi while he really went to this party in South Beach, I think it’s a safe bet he wasn’t there.

If you are old enough to die for your country, You should be allowed to make business decisions and make money anyway you can that is legal. The NCAA dose not have the right to tell anyone that they cant take money. People have the right to decide what benefits them, The NCAA is looking out after their own interest , so why not give the players the same benefit. If a person can pick up some money from an agent before the turns pro more power to him , i fail to see how that can make him a better athlete, it dose not change his talent level. however it is wrong to throw a game , no cheating in that reguard please.
