Listen up: Rick Sund wants you to know he thinks the Hawks are going to be just fine.
When the Miami Heat went shopping in this NBA offseason, they chose to bypass the markdowns at the strip malls, the polo shirts from Old Navy that morph into dust rags after two washings and the lime green shorts with a broken zipper from the $1 table at the neighborhood yard sale . They cruised Rodeo Drive. Why? Because they could. Maybe they also have some strange desire to win.
The Hawks are still in the midst of their shopping this offseason. It has been quiet, even as they roam the aisles of Value City. There’s still a chance they will come home with something other than used Play-Doh and a bag of defective socks. But don’t count on it. They have made it clear that their heads are bumping up against the ceiling of their budget. They won’t add a player if it means having to pay a luxury tax. They won’t add a player if it means trading a perceived player of significance. It doesn’t matter if the new player can actually make them better, or if he would ignite a fan base that’s just looking for a reason to walk through a turnstile.
Maybe this passive approach works. There was that whole tortoise-and-the-hare thing. Maybe drafting Jordan Crawford, giving more playing time to Jeff Teague and getting Joe Johnson to share the ball will make a difference. But after going 0-8 in the second in the last two years, is this the mindset an NBA franchise should have?
General manager Rick Sund said what he often says: “I like our team.”
He is hesitant to trade a perceived core player, disrupt chemistry or blow the budget. Let’s put aside for a moment that the organization recently overpaid to keep Johnson, who has fizzled in the postseason and doesn’t quite unite the fan base. Sund still sees the Hawks are trending upward.
He states his case: “Our goal is to continue to put an elite caliber ballclub on the floor and stay within the model [owner] Bill Davidson had when the Pistons were winning championships and what San Antonio did with their spending and the way they stayed under the luxury tax.”
Not every team can sign Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh. Most can’t even sign one. But sorry. The idea should be to aim higher. Bringing back Jason Collins, just because he lost weight in Europe and comes cheap, doesn’t cut it.
Replacing Solomon Jones and Randolph Morris with Solomon Jones and Randolph Morris clones is not what aggressive teams do. It’s like painting over a water stain on the ceiling without fixing the leak.
Strange. Sund’s analysis of the roster actually jibes with everybody else’s.
“We need two bigs – a center and a power forward,” he said.
But after some negotiations, the Hawks bailed on signing free agent center Brad Miller because he got too expensive. (Miller ultimately signed with Houston.) They’ve played footsy with Shaquille O’Neal, but they believe the would-be Big Peach’s asking price is too high (for now) and he seems unwilling to take a bench role (for now).
The problem: Shaq is the best player left in the depleted free agent market. It’s not even close.
Here’s the question Sund and ownership should be asking themselves: Who makes us better? They’ve convinced themselves that a center-by-committee (Al Horford, Zaza Pachulia, Collins and maybe you if can get a resume in) will be enough to challenge Orlando, Boston and Miami in the Eastern Conference.
Maybe Sund really believes this. Maybe his hands are tied. Maybe he just likes playing it safe, and if it doesn’t work out, well, he’s near retirement anyway. But can you feel comfortable with the status quo?
Sund again: “I think we’re pointed in the right direction. I’m hopeful we’ll improve with some changes to our offense and our young players getting older, and we can stay among the top four teams in the Eastern Conference.”
It doesn’t make much of a rallying cry.

So is Josh Powell our knight in shining armour sent to defend the likes of Dwight Howard? If you’re going to sign Josh Powell, why the hell would you consider being back that big loaf of meat named Jason Collins. Is it just me or is this whole picture offly confusing? It’s not all Sund’s fault. He’s simply doing what the owners tell him or approve of him to do. I agree with many who’ve commented in past posts – Phillips Arena will look like a ghost town. I love the Hawks. I’ve been to at least 20+ games in my time. Good times, bad times. But this is about the worst I’ve ever seen it get. How can I as a fan subject myself to this nonesense? How? Oh yeah I forgot…We do have the NBA’s highest paid player. He must at least be a top 3 or 5 talent in the league and be worthy of my hard earned money to go see. Another joke…ha ha. Not funny, I know.

relaxxxxxxxxxxxxxx guys,,, accoriding to david aldridge on nba.com under his free agent watch , the hawks will sign powell but not as a center, they will use him to back up the pF pos.. and are still insearch for a center and they are getting him for just around 982,000 pretty cheap..takes over randmos spot..and jason collins isnt back officially but it looks like if they brought in josh, they might be moving zaza pachulia =) to make some cap room …stop whining hes a decent bench guy, he has to ring lol..id rather see him on the bench than randmo or joe smith, anywaym hes younger and can bang around down there, give it some time, the hawks know what they are doing, there playing chess right now, stratigicaly planning there next move stop whinning, if your gonna continue to bitch on this blog than pick a new team , i knows its frustrating to see them, sit around but you dont know whats going on behind close doors not everything ggets reported otherwise you would have heard josh poweel spoke with the hawks last week, did you no!!! so relaxxx and shut up let it play out i highly doubt the hawks will look the same next year, and yea shaq isssssss most liley coming to atlanta ..so again relaxxx shaq and powell are good picks ups, and collins for how cheap he is, if in shape is just to have another 7 foooter as a body in the playoffs bc theres not alot of 7 footers out there, relaxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx he aint playen to play just to take fouls

The Hawks should go ahead and trade Marvin Williams for Chris Paul. Paul desperately wants to leave the Hornets and Marvin would make be a nice addition to anyones team by being the last or worst player on any nba roster. Trade Paul for Williams and a 1st round draft pick and sign the deal as quickly as possible.

I have been telling everyone all summer, until we get real management that can lure real players we will forever be second tier. If CP3 thinks he has a better chance at a title in NY than with a young good team, what does that say about this orginazation. It is as plain as black & white we are not considered by any of the present players in the league as an organization that is commited to winning it all. Sund = Dumb

Alright to everyone asking for Chris Paul he’s not coming in fact if anything Chris Paul holds all the cards, and he wants to be traded to either the MAGIC, KNICKS, MAVS, or LAKERS.
In that list there is no team that starts with an A in fact not even close to it. Also like someone said CP3 probably would have bolted anyway.
Plus top that off Woodson probably would have stunted his growth as a PG anyway remember how Acie Law turned out lol.

Why doesnt CP3 just go ahead and play with LaBron James at Miami. Then try and recruit Kobe Bryant and Carmello Anthony and just hand over the Larry O’Brien trophies to the Heat for the next consecutive 8 years or so.

CP3 is nothing but a crybaby! I heard Magic Johnson the other day blasting LaBron, Wade and Bosch as these modern day athletes are being DISHONEST in their attempts to gain championship rings. Back when Jordan, Magic and Bird played there was TOTAL HONESTY in going after the gold ball.. Nowadays players are spoiled and feel they are entitled and refuse to wait patiently for their clubs to build dynasties as the MJs Bulls, Magic and Kareems Lakers and Birds Celtics. These players come into the league like a bat out of hell believing they will get max deals RIGHT OUT OF THE GATE without having to prove their worth to their teams. Additionally, folks like LaBron and Wade were so frustrated that they couldnt win that THEY FELT THEY HAD TO CHEAT (collusion) in order to gain their rings. As I said before its cheating and I feel that David Stern was afraid to fine LaBron and rescind the deals sending bosh and james to the heat. David Stern should have made that deal NULL and VOID and forced LaBron back to the Cavs so that he could go about getting a ring the correct way. Some people say, “LaBron was a free agent and was entitled to play wherever he wanted, which is true”. But the acquisitions of LaBron and Bosh to the Heat to play with another superstar D-WADE should have been stopped because it (1) ruins the league and damages the integrity of the game; and most important (2) damages the league and IS BAD FOR THE GAME OF BASKETBALL AND CHEAPENS THE GAME FROM NOW ON. LaBron has become as destructive force and I think Dan Gilbert was correct in his letter to the Cleveland fans. Oh well its too late now and I wont ever watch nba basketball ever again.

LaBrons trick on the Cavs worked so well that now CP3 is trying to do the same thing. CP3 knows that the Hornets have no chance of getting a championship. So instead of patiently waiting for the Hornets to rebuild he demands a trade in the hopes that he can put together a dream team similar to what LaBron did in order to compete with the elite clubs. Its foolish and I promise you that it wont work. Paul made a short list of 4or 5 teams on his wish list, all backed with at least one superstar to augment Paul. Pauls plan will backfire because this is not how you build great teams. If paul plays in dallas, he gets to play with Dirk, in new york its Amare and if he plays in Chicago he teams up with Derek Rose. Pauls plan has a chance to work and I can understand his frustration, but Michael Jordan had to wait 7 years before getting his first championship and if MJ can wait that long these other spoiled brats can do the same thing. I say the Hornets should give Paul his unconditional release and let him walk to the unemployment line to embark upon his dream to unethically come up with a championship team. Every time I think of these modern athletes trying to make their play for championships (LaBron, Bosh, Wade, CP3) I just want to throw up. Im sick of the nba and I wont watch anymore.

I guess after Bosche got his wish to team up with Labron and Wade and play for the heat, Bosh a few days after the welcome party sort of felt guilty about the deal because his consience must have been bothering him. Bosh said on national television that ‘SOME PEOPLE ARE NOT GOING TO LIKE THIS’, him teaming up with LaBron and D-Wade to give the Heat an unfair advantage for the next 10 years. Like I said before I wish that David Stern would have stepped in and stopped the Heat deals because they are bad for the integrity of the game of basketball. However, Daivd Stern COULDNT STOP them in good faith because LABRON IS ONE OF STERNS BIG MONEY MAKERS FOR THE LEAGUE and wasnt going to do the right thing by suspending LaBron for at least one year and imposing a fine on him for at least $1 million dollars for trying to corrupt and damage the league. That would have been the right thing to do, but LaBron is Sterns big money maker and every arena in the league is sold out when Labron rolls into town in his Rolls Royce. Its sad and I wont ever participate in watching NBA basketball as we know it today.

When was the last time you saw a Hawk commit a meaningful foul on someone coming down the lane? Actually Shaq would help out running game because he understands what an OUTLET pass is!!! Unlike Josh and AL would try to double as Point guards leading the break, We can move Marvin to the bench which is where he wants to be anyway…. Are we trying to compete or what?

Everybody keeps trying to trade this team away, lol. I like our 3 guys of Josh, Jo and Al. I like our 6th man of the year coming off the bench in Crawford. I’m really intrigued by the JC2 as well as Jeff Teague. I kind of like the idea of Bibby teaming up with JC1 against second stringers every night. Please Marvin show up. Please Sund sign Shaq. Please fairweather fans leave the arena so I can get cheap good seats!
@soul, nice one bro. Either way jason collins can’t give fouls if running to the scorer’s table tires him. That’s the confusing signing in my opinion. Dude didn’t even get in shape at any point during the season.

The Hawks playing terrible in the playoffs was clearly not a talent problem. If you have a stupid coach you will play stupid. To have the philosophy of a switching defense on every play in a game is just ridiculous. It’s ok to mix it in if you have an athletic team, but that shouldn’t be the staple of your defense. Woodson took it to another level and made it the ONLY defense. They had Jennings looking like a superstar. He could end up being one, but when you have Horford guarding him at the top of the key and he blows by him and then the next time down the same thing……………..I won’t even get started on the offense. ASG sucks, but this team will still be a good team on the cusp of greatness if it all comes together. The team just needs to be rounded out with a legit big man. They snuck Crawford last year with patience. Maybe lightning will strike twice.

They “snuck” Crawford…………..jay you could have made that deal bro, GS didn’t need him anymore. After they drafted that kid from Davidson (remember they have Monta Eillis as well, so that made Craw the odd man out. Not saying Craw haven’t being good for the hawks, but do not give RS any “big time” credit fro making such a simple deal.

Heres part of Josh Smith’s interview with SLAM magazine:SLAM: You looking forward to playing with Shaq—if he lands in Atlanta?
JS: If he comes to the team, that’ll be real big for us, that’ll be real big for our team. I think we’re missing a guy down there that’s gonna hold up Dwight a little bit. You know, give him a little physicality a little bit. I think having him on the team would be big. Just having him for his leadership and all the different accolades he’s done throughout his whole career. He definitely can teach us a little thing or two about success in the League.

Anybody who followed NBA basketball in ’60s and ’70s knows that there were a ton of great players including Bill Russell and all his championships with the Celtics. Can you imagine what would have happened if Wilt Chamberlain, David Thompson and George “Ice Man” Gervin all called each other to have a summit meeting so they could play together and win championships. Those three giants of the game would have probably won several championships but their legacy would have been tarnished and I’m sure they would have lost a ton of respect. Now the great Chris Paul, who hasent accomplished anything sudden feels he must bolt from the Hornets and form his “Dream Team” to follow in LaBrons footsteps. Like I said yesterday, LaBron has created a copycat model in the NBA to follow for the idiots to follow. The league should never be thought of as “the inmates running the asylum”. David Stern is a wimp to let LaBron run his league. LaBron, Bosh and D-Wade should have each been fined, along with Pat Riley of the Heat and David Stern should have blocked the Heat acquisitions KNOWING THAT THEY WERE BAD FOR THE LEAGUE. Now Chris Paul wants to do the same thing, and some of the other players who are watching and observing are looking at this as if Chris Paul, LaBron and Boshe are models to follow. The models you should follow are Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan because they built the league and made it great and they didnt have to team up to form dream teams. They all made their teams great and each won multiple championships to show for their efforts. LaBum is a quitter and now you will have a league full of quitters, crybabies, whiners and unethical spoiled brats. David Stern will sit there and do nothing because he has a league full of stars and the league is making gazillions of dollars.

Brace yourselves everybody: there is a new commissioner in the National Basketball Associaiton. He is in charge of the league now; getting his instant ESPN TV Specials as “The Decision” and now star players as Chris Paul are looking up to “His Cowardness” as King James or the Great Decision Maker. LABRON JAMES HAS TAKEN OVER AS COMMISSIONER OF THE NBA. David Stern is a lame duck commissioner who is just making billions of dollars in revenue and doing nothing about his league being torn to shreds.

Those 3 all-stars in Miami (Labron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade) are not as bright as they thought they were. Think about this and now you have Chris Paul attempting to use the “LaBron Plan” to force a trade with the Hornets to go after a championship ring. Those 4 dummies along with many of todays athletes have the same mentality as Michael Vick did when he played with the Falcons. Vick couldnt think at all and some of his stupid stuff was classic yet he was so dumb he ended up in jail. Now you have Bosh, Wade, James and CP3 who think they can shortcut the system and take the easy way out forming collusions to overthrow the league, because they have no regard for structure and rules and think they are above the law. The mentality is the same thing that Mike Vick thought when he was quarterback for the Falcons. This entitlement athlete mentality of thinking that “i can do whatever i please because I make millions and you cant tell me what I can and cannot do. Vicks GPS guided him striaght into the Leveanworth, Kentucky penitentiary and prison life was forthcoming. Now James, Bosh, D-Wade, and CP3 have this “entitled” mentality that they are invincible and can do anything they please because they are millionaires and cannot be told what to do. STERN NEEDS TO COME DOWN HARD ON THEM BRING THE HAMMER DOWN AND MAKE CERTAIN THAT THIS FOOLISHNESS DOESNT HAPPEN AGAIN.

@ryan….normally you and I agree on these blogs…but your last comment, I would have to go the opposite way. You may think Joe has class, but he did lock up the long term deal with the hawks knowing he wouldn’t get that kind of money anywhere else. I’m not saying that he isn’t smart because I’m sure me and you both would have taken the money as well…lol. But here in Atlanta, no one is talking about winning championship or doing anything to bring a championship to the city. Rumors have it that we are getting Powell from the Lakers. I mean, it’s nice to see a hometown product come back and play for his city, but come on, he is not the answer. I don’t see CP3 as being selfish, I see him as trying to win. Notice, he didn’t say anything about the money he was getting. Not only that, but when you bring in Rookies (head coach, GM), you expectations are lowered. Not only that, but they didn’t bring in any FA’s.
@ Willie Sinclair…I was one of the biggest Mike Vick’s fan and was highly disappointed when he went down for that dog fighting incident. Everyone talks about collusion. Why would you fine a player for trying to recruit someone to play with them? I think Stern hit this one on the head. Owners are the one’s doing the tampering. I mean think about it…why would one player offer another player money? Not only that, but since when was it wrong to sit down and have lunch/dinner with your friend. I am military, so when I look at officers/supervisors being buddy-buddy with enlisted/subordinate personnel, we consider that as fraternization, and i’m pretty sure it works the same in the civilian world. I did think that LeBron owed it the franchise and the fans of what his intentions were, but then again, he was a free agent and had the choice to go wherever he pleased. What I did think that was classy about those guys in Florida was that they all took paycuts to help bring in other veterans, which is something that Joe Johnson can’t say. Do I see them winning titles? Yes, and i’m going to go out there on a limb to say that they will win 2. But in no shape, way, or form was this similar to Mike Vick. Vick was cocky and was showing up to practice whenever he wanted to. He had the owner in his back pocket and knew that he was untouchable…at least until they found out what he was doing on the side. Not only that, but he was stupid for what he did. How many people do you know will give up 130 mil (NFL contract at that time) for $30,00(what the dog ring was bringing in). So because of what vick did made him “entitled” to go to jail. I don’t want to sound like I’m bringing the brother down, but we have to be realistic here. And what top FA can you say that Vick brought to the Falcons? I think we all thought that Roddy White was going to be a bust, but it took Vick to leave, for us to find that out. Just food for thought!!
