Maybe Maurkice Pouncey (56) can use the, "It wasn't me, it was my brother (55)" excuse.
Those dirty, cheatin’ Florida Gators may be under NCAA investigation.
But seriously, don’t get too excited, folks.
According to report by ESPN.com, the NCAA is investigating an allegation that former Florida center Maurkice Pouncey, a first-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers, was paid $100,000 by a representative of an agent some time after the Florida-Alabama SEC championship game against and before the Gators’ appearance in the Sugar Bowl against Cincinnati.
Let’s consider the worst-case scenario: Pouncey is guilty. That means Florida used an ineligible player in the Sugar Bowl. The ramifications: They would have to forfeit one win over the Cincinnati Bearcats.
So much the earth-shaking news in Gainesville. Or the parade in Athens.
Barring the NCAA finding Florida in violation of other allegations, the only way the Gators get slapped with a more significant penalty than vacating one win is if the NCAA finds that Florida knowingly used an illegal player in the Sugar Bowl. That issue was at the root of USC’s two-year probation with Reggie Bush. The difference is, Bush’s reported benefits took place over a series of several months, including his family living rent-free in a home that was provided by a sports marketing representative. The NCAA determined that the Trojans must have been aware of benefits Bush was receiving over a long period of time.
If Pouncey took $100,000 from the agent in the time frame that has been outlined, the NCAA would have to prove that Florida became aware of it after the SEC championship (Dec. 5) and before the Sugar Bowl (Jan. 1), a period of four weeks (some of which was a holiday break for players). It doesn’t seem likely the NCAA could prove that — nor does it seem plausible that coach Urban Meyer would care enough to cover up allegations of one player taking money from an agent for the sake of one bowl game that didn’t have national championship ramifications.
By the way, for the record, Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley said: “At this time we have no information that has indicated that there are any compliance issues for the University of Florida.”
The NCAA will take it from here.
So let me guess: You believe Florida should be hit with three years probation and loss of 30 scholarships?

Come on Jeff. Who in Athens (or Dawg Nation) gives a damn about UF getting on probation? You either beat your rivals on the field or you don’t.
Are teams that lost to Bama 3 years ago gonna crow because that game gets forfeited (pending appeal) in their latest probation?
Most Dawg fans I know want UGA to get better, and that has nothing to do with how good or bad UF gets.

Now we know why one brother “Pounced” on a NFL offer and one didn’t…and I know the Pouncey brother’s father needed and received major surgery to save his life right before the bowl game. I wonder if that had something to do with Maurkice taking the money from the agent? If he took the moeny…I doubt the Florida coaches knew about it. A couple of years ago a Florida player took some money before a bowl game and was dismissed from the team (I can’t remember the name). So I think they would have done the same to Maurkice if they had knowledge of the situation….as I think any SEC coach would. This is a non-issue for the Gator program….but does make you wonder about Maurkice’s reasons for taking the cash in advance of the bowl game. And I am sure Maurkice playing made the Gators completely humiliate the Bearcats!!!!

One more example of your lack of knowledge about Meyer….Meyer did not play Harvin in several games in his career at Florida when he had an injured ankle and gave him time to to fully recover….including the SEC championship game against Bama….that is how much Meyer doesn’t care about his players. It was Harvin’s decision to play hurt against Oklahoma that year. If anything, Meyer underplayed Harvin in his career at Florida….or underused him according to a lot of Gator fans. No coach in American cares more about his players than Meyer…just ask the players. You can rant about Meyer all you want…but the truth is the truth…and your incorrect posts do not change those facts.

So calm down Dawg fans……..nothing earth-shaking is going to happen here, and i don’t think we really want something like this happening anyway. Don’t we, as the greatest football fans on earth and in the greatest states for producing talent, want the SEC as a whole to be a place that kids want to play ball, and a place where things are done the right way? Now that we’ve got ‘Bama on the straight and narrow, let’s hope that we can keep the entire conference on the right track so that we can enjoy being the BEST conference in the US for many yearas to come.

Let me, as a UGA fan, try to impart some sensibility here.
This is the kind of thing that – if true – could have happened to any school. It’s silly to punish a school and a team for one player taking some money from an agent before what was, in essence, a meaningless exhibition game.
TampaGator

Lastly….don’t expect Foley to go out, get drunk, go for a wild drive in Atlanta, stick red panties in his pants, text a hooker 200 times….etc. etc. etc.
And….yes….I am extremely disappointed in Maurkice Pouncey. He seemed to be a better person….but money sometimes corrupts the best of us….and agents tend to help with the process.

If true, very bad judgement on Pouncey’s part. Although as TampaGator mentioned, I believe the dad had just suffered a terrible accident where his leg was amputated. There isn’t any way that I could imagine the coaches or other authorities knowing anything about this before the Sugar Bowl. Their program is too valuable and they’ve worked too hard doing it the right way to let a player put that in jeopardy.
I believe the same goes for UGA’s program. Now Kiffin, on the other hand…not so much

joe…you can’t slap Florida with a violation like USC’s for this….especially if the Gator coaches did not know about the situation…(all you can do is take away any wins the player played in) which Foley clearly states they didn’t from his own investigation….but the NCAA will conduct its own investigation to verify Foley’s data. If the Florida coaches did know about it, Meyer and any other Florida coach deserves to be fired…and should be. I believe Foley. He would not try to cover this up….or get drunk worrying about it. He would admit it, administer the proper consequences to the coach or coaches involved, and file truthful information to the NCAA.

Yes it is a big deal. This is a major violation. Just how major depends. I have to believe that the coaches did not know about this. But if things like this happened to other players on the team then it’s a big problem. All I’m saying is that thanks to Mr Pouncey the NCAA will look a lot deeper into the program than if it were a secondary violation. He opened the door for the NCAA to get in. If there is anything else then it could get ugly. If Mr Pouncey is the only one then taking away the bowl victory should end the whole mess.

This ain’t USC, let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.
R. Bush took almost $300K, same with C. Webber during the fab five days. With USC the Bush incident was one of many thing that happened during his tenure, this happened once. USC flat out didn’t “notice” that Reggie B. was “meeting people” and hence why they got the huge sanctions due to the lack of compliance. This thing is no where near the Bush case.

I guess there’s two ways to beat the Gators. The Dawgs either need to achieve at Florida’s level or UF needs to sink down to where we are. I’d derive more satisfaction from our fortunes rising rather than Florida’s falling.
Really and truly, there’s no excuse for UGA being the Gators’ permanent butt-boy all these years. Both programs have comparable resources. UF’s just done a helluva lot better job managing theirs than UGA has. And if they’re cheating, they’re doing a pretty damned good job of hiding it.
It rankles me too, having to listen to all these smug UF dip-sticks proselytizing about Coach Urban and their beloved orange and blue all the time.
But until the UGA brain trust can figure a way to get the Dawgs where UF is, what’s to stop them?

Move along folks. Aint nothin here. At most gators have to forfeit one game and get a slap on the wrist. What the ncaa would be looking for is institutional cheating. And this aint it. Its sick how some of the dawg fans on here find this so delightful. Kinda silly actually. Especially when you find out that nothing is going to become of this if its even true except a 1 game vacated deal and a very small punishment.

And I wouldn’t say I was screaming when AU got hit in the early 90s. When AU got hit with the Eric Ramsey probation I thought it was mostly BS. That kid was just angry at the world, angry at AU coaches that he didn’t get a job in the pros, and he just turned and bit the hand that fed him. If Florida didn’t know what happened, other than forfeiting the Sugar Bowl game nothing should be done. The same thing could have happened to UGA or any other team. I don’t think Florida knew what went on or would have had time to do anything about it. Now the Agent should go to prison for the maximum of 15 years. The state of Florida made the penalty up to 15 years so they could control violations in a strict manner. The owner of the agency should get 15 years also. This would make the owners police their own agents and make it a serious offense. If you don’t make it a harsh penalty then other agents would try to get the same jump on their competition and you would have this same violations every year in Florida. I would parole the owner and agent after 3 years but if there were any more violations from either both would serve the rest of the 15 years with no chance of early release. The owner would lose his license forever. I don’t have any patience when it comes to people getting ahead of the competition by unethical , immortal. or cheating methods.

1. This is a non-issue for the Gators, but a forfeit of the Sugar Bowl win is unfortunate.
2. This IS a major issue in NCAA sports.
3. Agents AND players should always be charged when this happens. .
4. Agree with Clay, still comes down to winning on the field.
5. Had these disagreements with TampaGator before, he follows Meyer with a blind faith and believes Meyer does NO wrong. Meyer is a great football coach, but still just a man, and he has his agenda, tendencies, weaknesses, and faults like everyone else.
6. Tebow ran the play called by Meyer, most likely about 90% of the time. Checkoffs, etc. occur on every team. For all those runs, a very small percentage were called by Tebow. Most of the time, it was an option and he chose to keep the ball, but MEYER called the play. It is ridiculous to insinuate that Tebow called the offense. Tebow led the offense, but Meyer ran the offense.
7. Same goes for Harvin. College players don’t decide if they play. When injured, they tell the coach if they think they can contribute, the medical staff is involved, etc. But if they play injured, ultimately, it is the HC’s call. Meyer and any HC worth a damn would tell you that.
8. Meyer is a fine football coach, but he didn’t do the best possible job preparing Tebow for the NFL. If I had a QB that ran like a FB, I’d lean on him too, it’s human nature, and it worked. Richt and many other coaches would probably be guilty of the same thing.

I have respected you as a sports journalist, but this is an “Enquirer” type of headline. You should apologize to the Bulldog fans and alumni. Yes, I know how the Dawg fans hate the Gators, but come on, you are really questioning their loyalty and intelligence with this column.
Wy Don’t you talk about the strength and weaknesses of both teams? Why not talk about the new quarterbacks, new DC’s, and their respected opponents? Do you think, UF, UGA, or any other respectable unversity would not notify the NCAA of any type of infraction?
Again, I understand this is a Georgia paper, but before “dummy down” the local fans, why don’t you think before you write some crap headline like this?
I think you and Mark Bradley should go work for TMZ. This way you guys could use your marginal talent on Lindsey Lohan, Kim Kardashian, and Lane Kiffin.

If you have not heard, Maurkice Pouncey has made a statement that the allegation against him is not true and that he did not accept any money from an agent before the Sugar Bowl. He did say he used a deferred line of credit to buy a car and some jewlery but that was after the Sugar Bowl and before the NFL draft. The money was to be paid back to the bank after his contract bonus was received (the same kind of loan LeBron James received before the NBA draft before he graduated from high school). I believe Maurkice. He is a stand up guy….and honest. So I fully believe both Pouncey and the U of F will be cleared of any wrong doing. Tampa Gator …….. Tebow shouldn’t have been drafted where he was. He shouldn’t have been a 1st round pick. Denver was crazy enough to pick him there though. We’ll see what happens. I still don’t think he’ll do much at all in the NFL as a QB. He’ll wind up at FB/TE eventually…it’s just a matter of WHEN not IF. He was a good college QB in that offense, but he’s not going to be a good NFL QB. I expect we’ll see him run some wildcat and short yardage stuff but he’ll never be an effective every down QB. I’ll come back and eat my words w/a side order of squash casserole if I’m wrong.

I think the one position in particular it really helps to stay and play your senior season is the QB spot. I understand completely why Stafford did what he did as there was way too much money on the table and changes with the NFL policy that would affect him the following season. Yes, he was the number one pick and in fairness to Stafford the lions OL is lacking putting it very nicely. Therefore, a rookie QB on the worst team in the NFL what do you expect? Still, he is a starter and at the very best Tebow will be a 2nd sting backup. Kid has a huge heart and even though I am not a Gator fan it is hard to like TT as a person and competitor. I agree with you I think Denver wasted a first round pick and I might eat crow if he proves me wrong. It worked at the college level at UF and their offense but it won’t in the NFL. The speed of the game is quicker and a running qb in the nfl tend to have health issues sonner or later as someone is going to cathcup up with you sooner or later bigger and stronger.

Tebow was a number one draft pick…period….and I don’t think the Denver H-coach (or organization for that matter)is stupid. If Tebow fixes his delivery mechanics (which it seems he has done)and improves his ability to read coverages (which was a problem him in college) he has the brains and the arm (and body) to be a really good QB in the NFL. He is a bigger version of Steve Young (with a stronger arm)…and Steve Young did just fine in the NFL in the right offense (because he was very smart). And they said Michael Vick would not be able to run in the NFL….but he did just fine. He just couldn’t pass the ball with any amount of accuracy….and he was NOT very smart. I believe Tebow will retire if he does not make it at QB. You will never, I believe, see him line up at H-back or TE in the NFL. I thik Tebow would prefer preaching in prisons to that option.

for the record….I think you are homophobic like a lot of people who blog on the AJC…..and I mean…homophobic….and probably not too bright either….based on your simple-minded post.

and…..yeah, Harvin really had a hard time picking up on that complicated offense the Vikes run….right? He was only the NFL “Rookie of the Year”. Bright enough I think….and Favre was bight enough to get him the damn ball.
…..you know that they say about people who always enjoy put down other people…don’t you?

TampaFool,
that does not explain his staying eligible at Floriduh. You are such a genius trying to figure out people’s mental capacity from posts on blogs huh? Get a life loser!!! We all know your undying infatuation with Mr. “Um….um….um” Tebow. You weren’t one of his boyfriends in Gainesville were you? Was that you in that picture with him?

“We’ve never won a national title in anything other than football?”
Nope. Nada. Zero. Zilch.
“We’ve won a few gymnastics national titles to start. I reckon you never let the facts get in the way of your argument. ”
Like I said, take it up with ESPN, ma’am.
“And while ESPN lists 7 NCs I’ve seen several articles that list 8. But whose counting anyway since they are all mythical anyway? Right? 22 sec titles. I suppose those are all mythical also.”
Nothing like a bruised ego. LOL!

TampaGator. Only time will tell how good Tebow will or won’t be in the NFL. Denver could have probably taken him much lower in the draft, but we’ll never know. This draft wasn’t real deep in QB talent.
But, to your point, “If Tebow fixes his delivery mechanics (which it seems he has done)and improves his ability to read coverages (which was a problem him in college)….” Those are 2 pretty big flaws to “fix” on a first-round pick.
Bottom line, he was drafted on potential, so we’ll see. The interesting comparison will be Tebow’s progress versus the progress of Claussen (round 2 – Panthers) and McCoy (round 3 – Browns), as well as some other lesser known QBs.
Agreed, I don’t think he’ll waste a lot of time in the NFL. If he doesn’t feel like he is progressing, I’d expect him to move on to some sort of ministry. He seems to keep everything in perspective more than most.

Lots of penalties for the SEC. Why? The PAC 10-12? got nem. Administrators have to administrate-or forfeit Hawaian or Florida confrences where they go to administrate.. Everybody pays but the BIG TEN. They will thro down on Michigan State or minnesota and Iowa if they really want to act like they mean business this time. Check the NCAA from its history has been Big 10 led.

Tampa Gator ……. Well I guess Tebow oughta be getting ready to head down to the prison then. He won’t last more than a year or maybe two at the QB position before it’s clear to everyone that he’s just not an NFL QB.
