LIVE DRAFT BLOG: Hawks have a few hours to wait (UPDATE: Hawks expected to get Jordan Crawford in trade)

Derrick Favors gets a few interviews out of the way before heading to . . . New Jersey?

Derrick Favors gets a few interviews out of the way before heading to . . . New Jersey?

(UPDATE: 9:45 p.m. The Hawks drafted Texas forward Damion James with the 24th pick in the draft. But they are going to complete a trade with the New Jersey Nets for the 27th pick, Jordan Crawford of Xavier, and the 31st pick. Getting a Crawford is huge for the Hawks because he gives them bench scoring. He had a great NCAA tournament and he’s also the player who dunked on LeBron James in a summer camp last year. I’ll be posting a new column soon.)

Welcome to generally the scariest day in Atlanta Hawks’ history, and we speak of course of . . . the . . . draft! (Cue organ music . . . thunder clap . . . loud shrieks from the top of the stair case.)

OK, OK. Actually, things have gotten better in recent years with the drafts of Al Horford, Josh Smith, to a lesser degree Josh Childress, and potentially Jeff Teague. But the ugly history, which includes No. 1 picks like Shelden Williams, Cal Bowdler, Roshown McLeod, Ed Gray and Priest Lauderdale — and the non-drafting of Chris Paul — is tough to overcome.

I’ll be blogging live through the draft, so if you have any questions throw them at me. In the mean time, here are a few items of interest:

♦ Sorry, no Chris Paul (we think): Despite rumors flying of his possible availability — which were given an extra kick when he said he was open to a deal – New Orleans owner George Shinn released a statement, saying: “”We are about building and sustaining a winning tradition. Chris Paul is the cornerstone of our franchise and brings us unequaled support on and off the court. We will continue to build around Chris Paul, and we want to see him in a Hornets uniform for the remainder of his career.”

It’s worth noting that the words, “We will not trade Chris Paul,” aren’t in the statement. New Orleans Times-Picayune’s John DeShazier has a terrific column summarizing this sensitive topic with the Hornets. And yeah, I’m still wondering how a Josh Smith-for-Paul swap could re-shape the Hawks.

Our projected top 5 picks: 1.) Washington: John Wall, PG, Kentucky. 2.) Philadelphia: Evan Turner, SG, Ohio State. 3.) New Jersey: Derrick Favors, PF, Georgia Tech; 4) Minnesota: Wesley Johnson, SF, Syracuse. 5. Sacramento: DeMarcus Cousins, C-PF, Kentucky.

Six names for the Hawks: It’s almost impossible to project the Hawks’ pick because they draft 24th and they don’t seem focused on one specific position. But here are a few names to look at: Xavier shooting guard Jordan Crawford, Florida State center Solomon Alabi, Marshall center Hassan Whiteside, France power forward Kevin Seraphin, Kentucky point guard Eric Bledsoe, South Florida shooting guard Dominique Jones.

♦ There are reports out of Greece that Josh Childress may sign an offer sheet with the Washington Wizards, which would set up a sign-and-trade scenario with the Hawks. But that report hasn’t been confirmed and general manager Rick Sund won’t be available for comment until after the Hawks pick.

Your free agency fix: Former Tech star Chris Bosh stated the obvious: That LeBron James will be the first domino to fall in this free agency class:  “Am I waiting on LeBron? Pretty much. I think everyone has to. I have to as well. … He’s a great player and I would be crazy to think that all the teams that are considering him, they would talk to somebody else first. I think everybody is going to be going at him first.”

That’s it for now. Check back later.

Please don’t forget Hanno Mottola. I don’t know what round he was drafted in or how he was acquired but he has to rank near the top of the worst transactions the Hawks EVER made.

Looks like New Orleans has turned down some pretty hefty offers for Paul already, if rumors are true.

Would still love to be able to swing a J-Smoove for Paul deal, but can’t see it seeing where they’ve turned down bigger offers.

Re: the Hawks and Childress, I still don’t understand why he’d want to come back to the States to play for the Wizards. Seriously, Josh? You could be a key player on a division winning team, and you choose to go play with Gilbert Arenas and that mess of a franchise? Good riddance.

After having lost him for two years and not having gotten anything in return, it would be great to finally get something. I’d be ecstatic with the acquisition of Jevale McGhee but we’re more likely to get Randy Foye. Still better than nothing, which is precisely what we might get when Joe leaves….

Hey Jeff-

Why would the Hornets even consider trading Paul for Smoove? I know the back up played for them, but please-he is the face of that franchise. And were serious about the Hawks trading for Paul, kepping JJ and then getting Lebron? If that happened, I would take out a second mortgage for season tix.

True. But let’s reserve judgment on the young man until he actually does it. Hopefully there will be somebody close to him that can help keep him grounded. Everybody needs a mentor for one reason or other, at some point in their life, whether they know it or not. Many of us are blessed with that through good parents or at least one good parent. Many of us are not.

All the same, there are few victims. Choices along the way often define who we are.

Hawks need to somehow get bigger up front and get shooting if Joe leaves. Seems like other teams are getting more athletic which has been a huge advantage for the Hawks in the past. Plenty of bigs still on the board along with athletic 2/3 guards and small forwards.

Jeff Schultz

OK … so much for that. Damion James, a senior from Texas is the pick. 6-7 small forward. So much for Crawford. Here’s the breakdown from NBADRAFT.NET

Strengths: Well-built forward oozing with athleticism and agility … Exhibits superb fluidity of movement, running the floor like a guard (3.09 sprint at pre-draft combine) and quick to the basketball. Has been a rebounding machine since the moment he took the court for Texas … Possesses a 37 inch vertical leap, 7 foot wingspan and pursues every board relentlessly … Very quick off his feet on multiple jumps … He has taken his ferocious rebounding to another level through sixteen games as a Senior, averaging 11.2 per game … His scoring average has seen significant growth each season, from 8 ppg as a freshman to 17 ppg as a senior … The staple of his offensive game is the mid-range jumper … Takes a few power dribbles to his right or left and gets great lift on his shot … Combined with a high release, his jumper is virtually unblockable … Prefers to face up opponents in the post and elevate over the top … Displays range out to the college three, shooting 41% as a sophomore, 33% as a junior and 36% as a senior … In constant motion on the offensive end looking for openings and easy buckets … Shooting an efficient 48% from the field throughout his four years … Explosive finisher at the rim … Displays a great set of hands, retrieving even errant deliveries … If he gets his hands on the ball, he doesn’t let it go … Plays with an extremely high motor on the defensive end … Averages a steal and block per game for his career … Has the strength and lateral quickness to guard multiple positions.

Weaknesses: Lacks a clearly defined position at the next level, but is so talented he is a “player” and will find a role regardless … Ball handling needs further development. Appears very insecure when putting the ball on the deck. Rarely attacks all the way to the cup when being guarded. Dribbles with his head down … Off the bounce moves are very methodical, more concerned with maintaining the dribble than getting by the defender … His first step is hampered by lack of handle, restricting his ability to create shots for himself and others … Needs to find more consistency with his jump shot, although this is an area which has shown improvement … He’s worked hard on his mechanics, but still a work in progress. Guide (left) hand falls off the ball too early on his shot, making it a little unnatural … Doesn’t possess a shooters touch. Settles for too many long range shots, out of his comfort range … Shot selection is questionable. Free throw shooting is a major drawback of his game … Has failed to reach the 70% plateau in any season, with a career 63% … For an aggressive player, this is not up to par. While his scoring numbers have continued to accumulate, he is still not a primary offensive option … He has benefited off the greatness of Kevin Durant, D.J. Augustin and a loaded 2009-2010 roster … Fits the mold of a complimentary player, but not a go to guy. Although he’s taken over the role this year for the Longhorns … At 6′7 225 lacks the perimeter skills (ball handling and passing) to be a true NBA wing man, and lacks the size to defend the 4 position.

I’m guessing some of are not happy. Thoughts?

Analysis from DraftExpress on Damion James:

Damion James looks solid, but unspectacular across the board. At 1.0 PPP overall and drawing fouls on 10.2% of his shots, James is a solid offensive player, but considering his lack of ball handling ability, he’ll need to improve on his 42.9% shooting on unguarded jumpers if he wants to see consistent minutes at the three on the next level. The hustle numbers are there (1.25 finishing PPP, 2 Pos from offensive rebounds, 2.3 Pos from cuts), but James is a questionable one-on-one player (0.672) and may need to be more than serviceable in spot-up situations to be successful in the long-term.

Looks like new HC LDrew has decided to either replace MWilliams or at least light a fire under him. Before some of you go absolutely crazy and stupid with your dissatisfaction over us not drafting a center, DON’T FORGET FREE AGENCY. After all, we’re only looking for a backup to Horford, and maybe Zaza.

And who knows, we might end up with a center if we end up doing a sign and trade with JJ. It also looks like we’re going to get a scorer in SG Crawford to either replace JCrawford off the bench, or JJ as a starter. Some of you can complain all you want, but it looks like the Hawks have done a darn good job of getting 2 very valuable, talented and needed players.

With us getting Crawford in a potential trade, and if JJ resigns, it looks like we just acquired Jamaal Crawford’s replacement off the bench, which means he likely won’t be resigned next yr. GOOD JOB HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!

N.D.T.K.A.

Whiteside or Alabi?

Hassan Whiteside is a year older than Greg Monroe and just seven-and-a-half months younger than Cole Aldrich so the relatively raw nature of his game does not come with the benefit of relative youth. Furthermore, he fattened up the stat sheet by virtue of Marshall playing three regular season games against non-Division 1 opposition. Take away the the 19 blocks and 27 rebounds he notched in just 66 minutes in those games and he’s still a super shot-blocking and rebounding prospect. Take away the 21-31 shooting from the field and 3 of his 10 assists on the season, and his offensive game is even more clearly a work in progress. A worthy risk and a team willing to be patient with him could reap ample rewards.

Jarvis Varnado and Solomon Alabi are roughly equal prospects in value. Preference will likely be based on a particular team’s needs. Varnado has a slightly more developed post game and is very adept at defending the basket area. Alabi can defend in space as well as in the post (though the time spent defending away from the basket is evident in his lower defensive rebounding rate) and is more comfortable with the ball in his hands in the mid- to high-post though that may be damning with faint praise. Both should be immediate contributors.

Al Horford won two rings at Florida playing center.

Even if Al isn’t a 5, Smoov sure isn’t a 3. Your small forward should be able to shoot from the perimeter (Josh is cringe-worthy from beyond the arc). Sure Josh can play excellent defense, but he would absolutely kill an offense by playing on the wing full time.

We didn’t get beat because of our lack of size inside, we got beat because the idiot whose face I’m attached to couldn’t conceive an offense capable of utilizing our unique matchup. Orlando has size… so they use their size. We had superior athleticism and speed but decided not to use it.

Ryan, you have to understand that you’re talking about a franchise that hasn’t been a championship contender in the almost 50 years they’ve been in Atlanta. People don’t care about winning games in the regular season, nor should they… people want to know their team can occassionally play for a championship, and Hawks fans have never had that.

Yeah, they won 53 games, but they may as well have won 23… there is an elite group of teams in the NBA that compete for championships and the Hawks are nowhere near it right now. People want to see them progress to getting in that group for once, and we’re not seeing it.

I don’t think that’s being a bad fan… it’s just expecting your franchise to give you something to cheer for and stop being irrelevant for the first time in 50 years. And right now, even with 53 wins, we’re not relevant.

A lot of clueless people on this blog tonight. The Hawks wanted Crawford and figured they could get him at 27. So they picked James for New Jersey at 24 and traded him for picks 27 and 31. They got the guy they would have picked at 24 with the 27 pick, so the 31 pick was basically free. They didn’t like anybody available at 31 to make the team, so they sold the pick.

So for you knuckleheads asking why they didn’t just pick Crawford at 24, Crawford and cash is equal to more than Crawford and no cash for any owner, not just the ASG. It doesn’t happen all that often, but the Hawks front office got the better of another team tonight.

Some folks have been missing the memos about ASG. Get mad all you want, but it won’t put any more money in the owners’ pockets. They just signed two new coaches, made a major hockey trade, and they have free agents to sign on both teams. Anywhere they can save a few dimes they are going to do it. Over the course of a 4-yr deal, assuming the Hawks pickup the 4th yr on Crawford, they will save about a half million by getting Crawford 3 picks lower if my math is correct. It sounds piddly, but if everything we’ve been hearing and reading is correct every penny is important for these owners. If we have a problem, it’s with the ownership not the GM.

You have a new coach right, who knows how to coach right, and should be able to develop talent right, team wants to run right why not get young big to rebound, defend, and run? Nothing on the Hawks roster like that at 7′! The only thing the ASG should do is sell the team instead of selling picks!! I can’t believe some of you guys defending these clowns!!

Cheshire, the difference between 24 and 27 is about $95,000, and you have a 3 yr first round guarantee and a 4th year team option with adjustment percentages. So I roughly assume it’s potentially a $500K difference over the life of the deal.

If it is better for the team, what is the problem. Lamar Odom does it for the Lakers to let Gasol and Bynum play together but still gets his minutes and contributed to a championship. Here you go:

Derrick Caracter could be a second-round steal. He’s always been a nice offensive player in the post but further impressed last season as part of an excellent UTEP defense. Size (both vertical and horizontal), conditioning, and effort are legitimate concerns but his skill level compares favorably to other second-round options.

It’s only a slight exaggeration to claim (as I frequently do) that Duke won the National Championship because Mike Krzyzewski finally came to terms with Brian Zoubek’s limitations and left him on the court to produce rather than wasting precious post minutes on the limited and unproductive likes of Lance Thomas and David McClure. As an NBA prospect, Zoubek’s upside is a better-rebounding Aaron Gray or Nazr Mohammed (the later years) but he should find employment as a situational backup center.

If you are of color at UGA you must be one of the 3000 African Americans but you are probably an Athlete/Student. That is my anger. UGA is a Blonde White Girl College just check the Admissions numbers and then tell me different. Less than 3000K African American students, 1800k (give or take) Asian students, and 1000k (give or take) Hispanic students with a 57.6% female student body. UGA produces more school teachers than any College in the State. Well, the state of Georgia is 48th in education. Now, what does that say about UGA? Numbers don’t lie. HAWKEYE how many athletes of color are on you Baseball team, Football team, Basketball team as compared to your states Racial diversity and your student body? I figure your state is real white, but your college enrolement of students of color is higher than your states % of deviersity. Everybody deserves a cahnce at a future, but not at the cost of their education to pad the Athletic Departments Bank Account.

@pi$$onadawg – No I don’t get you. Just because you are trying to prove a point about UGA and teaching doesn’t give you the right to use the stereotype that all the Black students at UGA are athletes. My daughter and her best friend just visited it and are considering going there although neither is an athlete. Just so you know, I am not a UGA fan or alumni, but USC. Congrats on Tech’s diversity but you should celebrate Tech and not worry about UGA, especially if you are going to use stereotypes to prove your point. .

@Pi$$onadawg – how many of your professors are Black, Asian, Latino? Do they match the racial makeup of Atlanta or Georgia? I don’t care about a person’s color in the classroom or on the court, field, etc. If a kid gets into school because of his athletic ability and fails to use that as a springboard to a better life, either a degree or pro, or both, that is his fault, no matter what school.

Oh yes, definitely, Ryan.

I am old enough to remember hype surrounding the arrival of UGa’s first seven footer, a immobile stick figure named Troy Hitchcock.

We went to the final four that year with a 6′7″ center while the second coming of Kareem Jabbar remained firmly on the bench.

Hawkeye what does your daughter want to study? What does UGA offer for the Black student? My sisters are Korean and one did attend UGA while her husband was in school. There is so little cultural diversity on that campus or town. The Africans living in Athens are not somebody your want your Daughter hanging with, but you learn that on your own. Do more reasearch on the Diversity of UGA nad the graduation of the non-white students. I will let you check before I post the %ages.

@pi$$onadawg – my daughter isn’t a “Black Student” but a student that is Black. She is still deciding on major but UGA has them. If she feels UGA or GA Tech is the school she wants to go to it will be based on major, not % of Blacks at the school.

An You moved into the neighborhood you live in because it was where You FELT HOME. Why did you feel at HOME? Does your daughter want to feel at HOME face to face with other students and then find that UGA has to paint the Bulldog MASCOT’s butt white because thay can’t have a MUTT that ain’t all white? Spelman offers many of the same majors and your daughter can make better contacts and friends for her future, buut you just keep think the UGA eduacation and social experience is what is best for your daughter. UGA ain’t been called Barbie Doll U more than once for no reason.

Wish the hawks would draft more local talent. CPH is putting out some quality NBA superstars, and it isn’t a long walk from North Ave over to Phillips. After the Hawks sign Labrone, it would be a great team with a few Jackets backing him up. Looking forward to seeing the Jackets go back to the final four this year. Meanwhile, for the Hawks, once JJ learns the center position and Josh can convert to point guard to take over for an aging Bibby, it should be a good team. With Labrone, they are going to be great.

Actually Pape Sy #10 plays for STB LeHavre (up on the Northern French coast of Normandy) in the Pro A League. That should make it easier for you guys to look him up. LeHavre is the city, not the whole name of the team. His teammates include Andrew Lovedale (the power forward on Stephan Curry’s Davidson NCAA Elite 8 team) and for you SEC folks Ansu Sesay (Ole Miss alum).
