Who is more likely to win a title this year: Matt Ryan or Chipper Jones? (Curtis Compton/AJC)

The NBA championship will be decided tonight between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics. This comes a day after the New Orleans Saints received their $30,000 Super Bowl rings Wednesday and a week after the Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup.

Which Atlanta sports team is closest to a championship?

View Results

Loading ... Loading ...

I do this every once in a while — seemingly every time somebody wins a championship — but here we go again. If you had to pick the next Atlanta pro sports team to win a title, who would it be? (I could’ve thrown college teams into this debate, but I figured we have plenty of time to have every blog devolve into a you stink/no you stink drunk argument between drunk frat boys from Georgia and Tech, and I mean disrespect to drunk frat boys, especially the ones on game days who offer me a beer when I walk by their house.)

Anyway, we’re in baseball season now and there has been this general feel-good atmosphere around the Braves in the past six weeks. It would be one of the greatest stories in Atlanta sports history if the Braves could somehow win their second World Series in probably the final season for both Chipper Jones and manager Bobby Cox.

But if I’m ranking the four teams right now, the Braves’ title chances are No. 2. Here goes:

♦ 1.) Falcons: They’re coming off a season during which almost everything went wrong, including injuries, and they still won nine games. They’ve improved their defense this offseason (signed cornerback Dunta Robinson; drafted  linebacker Sean Weatherspoon) and bounce back seasons are expected for quarterback Matt Ryan and running back Michael Turner. One NFL expert already has picked them to win the NFC South, ahead of the Saints. Ryan obviously is the biggest key.

♦ 2.) Braves: They’ve managed to take over and hang onto first place in the National League East despite slow starts from several key players. Starting pitching (on non-Kenshin Kawakami nights) will keep them in the race this season, regardless of how the offense goes. If  improbable success stories like Troy Glaus and Eric Hinske keep hitting like this, they could win the division. If Jones, Yunel Escobar and Brian McCann come around, they have a real chance to win it all. But I still see the Philadelphia Phillies as the best team in the league, notwithstanding their problems over the past month.

♦ 3.) Hawks: They’ve made the playoffs the last three years, which puts them ahead of the other three franchises. But there are too many uncertainties right now: Joe Johnson’s impending free agency; the development of point guard Jeff Teague; the lack of a legitimate NBA center; and the transition of new head coach Larry Drew.

♦ 4.) Thrashers: General manager Rick Dudley still hasn’t hired a head coach, the roster needs proven scorers and ownership is expected to provide him with a Walmart budget to work with (again). Dudley’s eye for personnel will help, but there are limits to what the team can do in the short term.

So, what do you think? Agree with the rankings, or do you think the Braves (or another team) are closer than the Falcons?

@ Colin…
MLB numbers are nothing to shout about either, so what’s your point? MLB gets trounced by fishing shows on Saturday afternoons…

It’s been a long time since I bothered to read comments below an AJC article, and now I know why. This site is full of trolls (the ‘Choke ha ha ha’ guy for instance) and people who know nothing about the subject (again, the ‘Choke ha ha ha’ guy for instance.)
An example of this is the comment I read earlier from someone claiming that nothing is standing in the the way of the Braves winning the World Series, except the manager, or some bs. Seriously, there are a lot of good teams in MLB that are standing in their way, and many of them simply have more talent than the Braves. It’s been a long time since the Braves could compete monetarily with the the bigger market teams, and despite what we may like to think, this is very important. The way that the Braves have constructed a good club with their financial limitations is admirable, but it’s wrong to think that they ’should’ win the World Series or anything, especially given the number of strong clubs to contend with and the variance that exists in any short series.
As for Matt Ryan, he’s done a fine job in the NFL and will only get better as time goes on, but it takes a lot for an NFL team to win a Super Bowl. The Falcons could contend for a title any given season and they seem to be the closest Atlanta team to a title, but there’s no way of knowing how things will change, and whether or not a strong Falcons team will even be the 1 team out of 32 to win in any given year.
As for the Hawks and Thrashers, there’s no way to know how either will look in a even a couple of years, but I think it’s safe to say that neither one is a title contender in the near future.

Really, there is. Matt “Choke” Ryan, hiramsaint, you two seriously need to get a life. You’ve both been on this blog for better than 10 hours. Do either of you do anything during the day? I sure hope you have something better to do with your life than try to pick on strangers you’ll never meet and spew nonsensical information over the internet. I really hope the ajc blogs aren’t all you have in your lives.

Go ahead and make fun of me if you like. Yes, I read almost all your posts, it took some time, but I did. You know what I found? Two insecure people that feel the only way they can feel important is to try to high jack an online blog. I sincerely hope that isn’t all you two have, but I have a feeling it is.

This blog is full of idiotic MORONS. Have you people forgotten that Matt Ryan has played TWO seasons in the NFL? And he was hurt last year. How can you idiots possibly make all these RIDICULOUS comments about him being a choke artist? He did win 11 games in his ROOKIE SEASON afterall. And I recall the defense being the main reason for that playoff loss to Arizona.

Definitely the Braves. Not only are they first in the NL, they just won two out of three games against the best team in baseball. This, along with success against several other premier teams proves they can contend this year. Wren would do well to shop around for a slugging outfielder soon and Medlen should be permanently in the rotation. The glaring weakeness, Kawakami and McLouth, must be addressed.

Really don’t see either one of the Pro organization winning any kind of championship in my life time. Atlanta Professional Teams will always watch other teams celebrate championships because of fact they don’t want to pay top of line players, hired outstanding coaches, get rid of the good ole’ boy system, & draft highly talented players. Look what the saints did on their first crack @ it. The ring they got was ugly but they have one. They will get atleast 2 more before Alanta Pro Teams will get one.

When was the last time a quarterback had a safety in the playoffs or in a regular season game for that matter?

Dude is a chump, loser and CHOKE.

Stop making excuses, because I recall another Falcon quarterback in his 1st season as the starter (2nd season in league) who led the Falcons to the playoffs, 1st to beat the Packers in Green Bay in the playoffs, make the pro bowl and finish 2nd in the MVP voting.

Please stop the excuse train and get onboard the reality train.

Dude is a chump, bust and CHOKE.

That still young excuse is way too old. I still remember a 22 year old quarterback lead the Falcons to the playoffs, land Green Bay their 1st home playoff lost, make the pro bowl and finish 2nd in the MVP voting.

No more excuses, because if he sucks, he sucks, nobody else’s fault.

MORE EVIDENCE DIMITROFF CAN’T DRAFT:

Behrens responds: The argument on behalf of Flacco is easily made, because we’ve all actually seen him play — not in cameo appearances, but over full NFL seasons. We have tape, we have data. We’ve all witnessed his development over 32 regular season games, plus five playoff contests. There’s no need for hypotheticals here. Instead, we can discuss facts. Flacco is entering his third year as Baltimore’s starting quarterback, and he’s coming off an excellent season: 3,613 yards, 21 TDs, 12 INTs, 63.1 completion percentage.

There are several reasons why the Ravens are among the preseason favorites to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl, and Flacco is one of them. He’s an accurate passer with ideal arm strength, and he hasn’t missed a game due to injury in college or the pros. This year, for the first time in his NFL career, Flacco has an elite receiver at his disposal (Boldin) in addition to Ray Rice(notes) and Derrick Mason(notes). These are not exactly the Dilfer Era Ravens. Baltimore’s offense is loaded, and Flacco has both the skills and experience to direct it successfully. If you can’t imagine a 4,000-yard season, then … well, then you must be a Steelers fan. Flacco made a nice statistical leap from his first year to his second, and there’s another jump upcoming.

I’m going with the Braves at #1 and Falcons #2 I don’t think anyone else has a prayer. After seeing the last six weeks the Braves have put together and just winning a couple of series from two likely playoff teams, I’m a believer. Like you said they still have room for improvement, McCann, Escobar and Chipper under performing, and Jurgens being injured during this amazing run, plus any move they will probably make before the deadline, means this team could get even better. They still have a long ways to go but I like their chances. If they do make the playoffs I think they will go deep.

Falcons – They will be very good, and I believe they will make the playoffs, but there are too many questions now for me to believe in a superbowl win, how much better will Matt Ryan and the offense be, and same for the DB’s on defense. We just won’t know untill the season gets going. They will have to go through the Saints, but then the Vikings, Jets, and Colts are all going to be very tough. Too me its just seems like to too hard of a playoff road for them to win the super bowl. I just think its another year or two away. But i’ll be cheering them on.

EVEN MORE EVIDENCE ABOUT THE GREAT CHOKE:

Matt Ryan is entering his 3rd full year as a starter for the Atlanta Falcons.
His first year as a starter he led the Falcons to the first round of the playoffs against the then-to-be NFC Superbowl rep team Cardinals. While Ryan played a decent game they did lose the first game going one and down in the playoffs.

Second year starter as the teams QB, he had another decent year leading the Falcons to back to back winning seasons finishing with a 9-7 record. However, this record while positive, wasn’t high enough to be able to make the playoffs.

So for 2 years starting he is 0-1 in the playoffs and missed completly the second year.
A lot of similar winning and season stats compared to Romo.

However, I never hear a thing about Matt Ryan. Ever. I’m just curious, if the Falcons where to miss the playoffs again this year are any of us going to start hearing the word “choker” “can’t win the big games” crap about him that we so often hear about Romo?

They are playing in a tough division and both the Saints and the Panthers are going to put up a good fight.

So back to the question, will we start to hear the same negative vibes thrown at Matt Ryan as we do Tony Romo, or is Romo on an island himself stuck with the stigma of being the quaterback for the Dallas Cowboys?

ANOTHER CASE FOR THE CHOKE BUST POTENTIAL:

Alright, I guess it’s time for me to lay it all out on the line. So that’s what I’m going to do. I’m here today to tell you all (like you really care, but I’m going to do it anyway) that I am completely against the idea of the Dolphins taking Matt Ryan with the #1 overall pick. I’m sure many of you have assumed this based on some of the things we’ve talked about recently, but now I will go on record and say that I hope the Dolphins do not take Matt Ryan first overall.

So, why am I against Matt Ryan? Well, despite what some think, it’s not because I’m 100% sold on John Beck. After all, how could anyone be sold on him after last season? My feelings on Beck are that I think there’s more of a chance he becomes a very good quarterback in this league than there is of him turning into a total bust. But that’s not what this is about.

What this is about is me not being sold on Matt Ryan enough to take him #1 overall and pay him the $35+ million in guaranteed money that he’ll be looking for. So I’ll present some arguments as to why I am not sold on Ryan, but I am aware that this is very subjective and somebody could easily make a case in favor of Ryan.

Latest Super Bowl odds for Green Bay Packers: 11-1

Twitter FarkIt Type Size A A A BroBurySports.com has released its early Super Bowl odds and compared them to where each team was when last season ended.

The Green Bay Packers come in No. 6 with 11-1 odds, actually a little better than the 12-1 after last season.

Indy No. 1 is no surprise with 6-1. Steelers went from 12-1 to 10-1, a little surprise considering the Big Ben situation. Philly dropped to 18-1 from 12-1, I’d guess that’s what happens when you trade Donovan McNabb to run out Kevin Kolb. On the flip side of that coin, Washington goes from 50-1 to 20-1. Chicago improves from 40-1 to 25-1. Arizona in a free-fall from 30-1 to 50-1, can you say Kurt Warner…

Bills, Browns, Lions, Chiefs, Raiders, Rams, Bucs at the bottom of the barrel at 100-1

Indianapolis Colts 6/1 (previously 6/1)

San Diego Chargers 8/1 (8/1)

New Orleans Saints 9/1 (10/1)

New England Patriots 10/1 (10/1)

Pittsburgh Steelers 10/1 (12/1)

Green Bay Packers 11/1 (12/1)

Dallas Cowboys 12/1 (12/1)

Minnesota Vikings 12/1 (12/1)

Baltimore Ravens 15/1 (15/1)

The Braves. I would bet money that the Braves not only win one World Series this decade but two. What was the main weakness of the Braves post season teams of the 90″s? Lack of power pitching outside of Smoltz. Look at what’s in the minors playing at Myrtle Beach, SC right now, 4 legit power arms that throw nasty stuff up there. Combine that with Tommy Hanson and Mike Minor, who is in double A leading the minors in strike outs and that’s a lot of power pitching that the Braves have never had before. Even if only two of those 4 really good pitching prospects turns out to be good, combine that with Tommy Hanson and Kris Medlin and that is a sick rotation. Not to mention Jason Heyward getting older and more experienced and then add in Freedie Freeman and Mycal Jones coming up in the next couple years to go with our other veterans. The Braves are about to go on a really good run.

I think the Falcons have a really good shot at winning the super bowl in the next couple of years as well. I think both franchises win a championship within the next 5 years.

JSS,

MLB is a 6 billion dollar a year industry. When the WNBA gets over 20 million people watching each of it’s games in the World Series come talk to me. Hell close to 20 million people watch the MLB All Star game every summer. I follow ratings and track them for a living Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN draws higher than most NBA non finals games. They average over 5 million fans a game when they have the Yankees or Red Sox. They also average several million fans when teams like the Dodgers, Braves, Cardinals, Phillies, and Mets are on. Major League Baseball on average outdraws the other leagues not named the NFL.

There was nothing undercover about what I and others did concerning that silliness of the 16th and 17th. Each person bears a responsibility for what they do here, this is not an anonymous environment, just anonymous user names. A better statement may have been: “Be careful who hitch your wagon to, they may just carry you over the cliff too…”

@ ScottBravesfan…
I cited Saturday afternoon MLB telecast in comparison to comparable professional sports telecasts and programming airing in those time slots. By the way, if the #1 and #5 markets in the US can’t draw a viewership on the wasteland that is Sunday night (2nd only to Friday nights low viewer mobility) with a natural 85 year rivalry. Then you can’t draw market share whether it be in timeshifted viewing behavior or cable penetration, then pay-to-play (cable) has misspent its money.
