USC may lose BCS title but Auburn is still feeling the burn

Then-Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville banged the drum for his team after the Sugar Bowl, and rightfully so.

Tommy Tuberville banged the drum for his Auburn team after the Sugar Bowl, and rightfully so.

So we’ve already established that this is a major kegger day in Knoxville (click here for the updated USC story). The Lane Kiffin/Weenie Roast officially begins at 3 p.m., when the NCAA is scheduled to drop the probation hammer on USC.

But how do you feel today if you’re an Auburn fan? USC may get stripped of its 2004 BCS national championship, and the Tigers never were allowed to even play in that game, despite going through the season undefeated.

Is this a day for Auburn to feel vindicated or just angry?

Rewind to 2004: Auburn went 12-0 through the regular season but finished third in the BCS standings, behind USC and Oklahoma (which also went 12-0). To any SEC follower, the thought of going through the conference season undefeated and not winding up in the national title game is ludicrous. But the Tigers had to settle for the Sugar Bowl, and they defeated Virginia Tech, 16-14.

Auburn’s case for being in the BCS title game even was supported by Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer, who said, “We started out playing Southern Cal and I believe this Auburn team is better.”

So you can imagine what the opinion was of Oklahoma — especially after the Trojans destroyed the Sooners, 55-19, to claim the title.

“Neither team is better than us,” Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville proclaimed. “We’ll play them anytime, anywhere.”

Never got that chance.

Now what? The BCS added to its bylaws in 2007 — after the NCAA began looking into potential violations at USC — that gives it the power to strip a championship from the winner. Quoting:

“When the NCAA or a conference makes a finding of violations … and imposes a sanction of forfeiture or vacation of contests in which an ineligible student-athlete participated, we will presume that vacation of participation in a BCS bowl game is warranted.”

This doesn’t mean the BCS (which is independent of the NCAA) is suddenly going to declare Oklahoma the winner and give Auburn a runner-up trophy. If  it opts to strip USC, there just won’t be a champion listed for 2004.

Conversely, the Associated Press will not change its final rankings from that season: USC will remain No. 1 and Auburn (which drew three first-place votes) will be No. 2.

The Tigers probably deserve a little more than that.

But then, they also deserved more in 2004.

The BCS is full of crap at all times, but their denial of Auburn in 04 was the ultimate example of it.

Speaking of feeling the burn wait for Plyometrics tomorrow. Remember do not eat anything at least 1 hour prior to this session. Now would be a good time for that recovery drink too.

Considering Auburn beat The Citadel to give them 1 of their 12 wins, they shouldn’t complain. In that day, the BCS valued SOS and counted Auburn as not having played but 11 games.

The title should be USC’s with an asterisk stating it was vacated in 2010. The same goes for the Heisman trophy. Reggie Bush shouldn’t be invited to any Heisman Trophy presentations either.

With the BCS, there are no real winners. There is just a team that gets a trophy. And in this case, there may not be a team that gets to keep a trophy.

GSTATEBEN is an idiot. Florida has played the Citadel in thier run to the National Championship. Also look who is on Alabama’s schedule for next year if the make a run to the title. Sorry Georgia State, who the Citadel would beat like a drum. Every school in the country has a patsie on it. So to say that the Citadel game cost Auburn is a joke. Auburn was unfotunately in the position of being behind two teams that started the season 1-2 and finished that way.

Take USC out of the formula in 2004 and it would be Auburn and Oklahoma in the Big Dance. We can’t go back and re-create/play that scenario not can we predict what would happen. On the books, is anything more fair, appropriate, or sensible that sharing the title between Auburn and Oklahoma?

Reggie is a victim here. he was a kid, he played the game hard and he earned the trophy. Pete Carroll should have to pay back his salary to the NCAA for the years Reggie’s parents lived in LA. It should be a legal fine. Kiffin deserves everything he had coming so we will lend that to his greed and devine intervention.

“Dear God. I pray that UGA gets to play USC before Kiffin gets canned. Either a bowl game(later) or let us open the season Chick-fil-A style in Atlanta. Heck Lord we will go to California. Please grant us the opportunity to avenge the sucker punch Kiffin gave us Dawgs and the rest of the SEC. Secondly, could you please givve the Vols a piece if Kiffin Pie too? They so deserve a USC game.” -Big Ball Sack Dawg

But nothing will take away Florida’s incredible domination of Georgia. If you need reminding, Florida has won 17 of the last 20 games in the series, most by lopsided scores. The combined score in the last two games was 90-27. Any way you look at it, that’s a plain old fashioned whupping.

Life is so good for a Gator fan nowadays!

The poor dawgs, bless their hearts.

There is nothing the NCAA can do in this case except strip USC of their title. They can’t go back in time and try to figure out whether Oklahoma or Auburn is better when they didn’t even play each other.

Any fairminded person knows Auburn should have gotten the chance to play for the NCC. They were skrewed big time. Since then the BCS has tried to make up for it by not denying the SEC the NCC Game (even when UF lost to Ole Miss and Utah was denied though undefeated). None of this changes the fact that Auburn was short-sheeted.

5. Auburn – 0.618 (oppoenents winning %)
11. Oklahoma – 0.607
18. USC 0.581

The Tigers/War Eagles/Plainsmen in no manner deserve to back into a national championship. We all know that toothless bunch of goat farmers cheats every step of the way and should have to earn a national championship the way my Tide did, well make that 13 championships for us.

Keep in mind that Auburn did play USC home and home in 2002/2003. The first year in Auburn, USC slaughtered them. The second year out there, Auburn took essentially the same team that ran the table in 2004. USC whipped them again.

If you were going to do anything, it would be to award the NC to Oklahoma, who lost badly, but lost to a team that cheated.

GStateBen, The Citadel was scheduled only after Bowling Green backed out to go get beaten by chOklahoma. USC and chOklahoma played a couple patsies as well. USC vs. Arizona & Colorado State (Combined record of 7-15). chOklahoma vs. Houston & Baylor (Combined record of 6-16). Every team schedules weaker opponents.

However, when USC and chOklahoma start the season ranked No. 1 and No. 2, Auburn had no chance of getting in the National Championship game.

The BCS is a joke and those who created it should be tarred and feathered.

Tyler good point on the SOS rankings, that should take care of that argument…by no means am i an auburn fan, dawgs all the way, but since the game can’t be played the only right thing to do is move up whomever finished 2nd in the polls that year and i believe that would be auburn…If you don’t do that then the title would be left vacant, however, if you take USC out of the equetion then that leaves Oklahoma and Auburn undefeated going into that game and at worst you could have co-national champions for that season as both would be undefeated and untied…
