‘Vote For Prado’ T-shirts could jump-start All-Star campaign (FINAL UPDATE: Moylan becomes ‘Napoleon’)

Martin "Pedro" Prado is joined by campaign manager Peter "Napoleon Dynamite" Moylan.

(THE RECAP: So what started as a “Tweet” during Tuesday night’s Braves-Phillies game has turned into a movement! The Martin Prado “Vote For Prado (Pedro)” All-Star campaign is in full force. Just today, I received updates with T-shirt designs from readers, at least one person is now selling shirts on CafePress and there’s a “Vote For Prado” Facebook page. I even solicited a comment from the Braves’ sales and marketing chief, Derek Schiller. And now this: It seems reliever Peter Moylan has nominated himself Prado’s ‘Napoleon Dynamite.)

Anybody familiar with the off-beat but cult movie, “Napoleon Dynamite,” will remember the low-frills, “Vote For Pedro” T-shirts that Napoleon used to promote his friend (a transfer student from Mexico) for class president.

The T-shirt became so popular with movie fans that stores began producing and selling them to the public.

Pedro and Napoleon hit the campaign trail.

Pedro and Napoleon hit the campaign trail.

So here’s a marketing idea for the Braves: Start selling “Vote For Prado” T-shirts to push their second baseman, Martin Prado (a transfer student from Venezuela) for the All-Star Game.

I threw this idea out there on Twitter during Tuesday night’s Braves-Philadelphia game and it seemed to catch fire.

“Wish I had thought of this.”

“That would be fantastic.”

“Vote for Prado. I’m in!”

“They should pay you royalties from the sales.” (This one was my favorite.)

“Sounds like a very good idea,” Braves pitcher Peter Moylan said. “I’d buy one. The guy’s leading the world in hits. He’s playing unbelievable defense.”

Moylan said Prado likes American movies.

“He quotes ‘Stepbrothers’ all the time,” he said. “I’m sure he’s seen it.”

So I asked Prado if he had ever seen “Napoleon

Dynamite.”

“I fell asleep during it,” he said.

But: “I remember that part of the movie.”

His thoughts on the T-shirt concept?

“Oh, I don’t know,” he said. “I don’t think about stuff like that and the All-Star Game right now. You know me, I’m just thinking about today’s game.”

(UPDATE: We now have this comment from the Braves’ marketing department.)

“The T-shirts are a good idea and we will certainly look into them,” said Derek Schiller, the Braves’ executive vice president for sales and marketing. “Of course, just like Pedro, Prado has skills and people like him.  I think all he needs is to find a friend on the team that will be his Napoleon Dynamite and this campaign might get some momentum.”

Prado is third in voting among National League second basemen, behind runaway leader Chase Utley of the Phillies and Rickie Weeks of Milwaukee. He leads the league with 71 hits and is hitting .321 with 27 RBI (remarkable for a player who has hit first or second most of the season). He also made a great defensive play in Tuesday’s 7-3 win, throwing out the Philadelphia’s Carlos Ruiz at home to complete a double play after Ruiz tried to score from third on a grounder.

For the second time this home stand, Prado noticed a, “Vote Prado All-Stars” banner hanging in the outfield.

“It makes me feel good,” he said. “But for me, it’s hard  [to get recognized] because there are so many good second basemen who hit home runs, and that’s what people want to see.”

What this campaign needs is a T-shirt.

Are you in?

I’m definitely in. I’ve been a huge supporter of Prado even when he was behind Kelly Johnson last year. He deserves this. Last year, he was always ready to play and was always prepared even if he wasn’t in the line-up. He’s a great defensive player, and even though he doesn’t hit a lot of homers, his bat is on fire. He’s consistent! So, basically, I’d buy the t-shirts.

Hopefully he will be picked by the NL coach if not selected by the fans. He is great fun to watch. He does it all. Fields, turns doubles, hits, . . .

Jeff, if you could pick only one player, wouldn’t you pick Heyward?

Interesting piece on McLouth and his slump on BR, read it here — http://bleacherreport.com/articles/399641-nate-mclouth-and-the-hole-in-atlantas-lineup

Turns out ol’ Nate is hitting worse than the pitchers, and it’s even worse after Hudson went 1-3 last night.

Prado should be an All Star. His play speaks volumes…..thankfully he got a chance to play when KJ was injured.

It took Bobby quite a while to come to grips with the fact that Martin should be playing instead of KJ.

He is the Braves catalyst.

Great idea. While we’re at it, why don’t we create a T-shirt for Heyward too?

The atlantabraves.com website makes it easy to vote over and over. Simply fil out some info, it stores it, you can glaze past the AL ballot if, like me, you don’t pay enough attention to them to make an educated guess and move straight to the NL and place your votes. The votes are saved as is your info. Submit your vote and you can vote as many times as you want. You do have to deal with one of those ‘capthcha’ images each time, but they are only numbers and are easily read. I can do one hundred in 20 minutes. I will do one hundred for Martin every day. Anybody with me?? I hate to do it that way, but explain to me how Richie Weeks is ahead of Martin unless his fans are stuffing better than we are??!! To make my gut feel better about it, I am seeing it as voting each day for the number of games I hope the Braves get this year in the regular season!

Rickie Weeks….really? No doubt that Chase Utley is an all star, Dan Uggla deserves some consideration…but PRADO should be STARTING if people would vote based on MERIT and what you’ve done this year, rather than rewarding people for being great year in and year out.

Heyward, Prado, Hudson should all be on the ALL STAR team…perhaps McCann with a hot June can be there as well.

Rickey Weeks? Excuse me while I jump in front of a Marta train.

I will have everyone know that as I true, and I mean I bleed red, white and blue… okay, that would be messed up; gonna need to see a doctor about that… I have already completed my allotment of votes per email address.

So all you huckleberries can go straight to heck. Sorry for my language just now. That was uncalled for.

Actually, I suddenly remembered I have a gmail account I haven’t used in half a decade. So now it looks like we’re talkin’ 25 additional votes for Martin “Vote for Pedro” Prado, J-Hey, Glaus, BMac, Chipper, Hinske (my write-in) and of course, Brandon Hicks. Who could forget B-Hicks?

Not me.

Mitchell

And that’s 25 extra votes in addition to the 50 I have already recorded.

We’re all just going to have to start creating phantom email addresses like some Ponzi scheme to make Martin an All-Star starter. Except this time it will be for good. I mean, let’s be fair. Ponzi schemes are almost always well intentioned. Let’s not judge Ponzi schemers too harshly lest the Ponzi schemers judge us in kind.

Words to grow on.
