(THE RECAP: So what started as a “Tweet” during Tuesday night’s Braves-Phillies game has turned into a movement! The Martin Prado “Vote For Prado (Pedro)” All-Star campaign is in full force. Just today, I received updates with T-shirt designs from readers, at least one person is now selling shirts on CafePress and there’s a “Vote For Prado” Facebook page. I even solicited a comment from the Braves’ sales and marketing chief, Derek Schiller. And now this: It seems reliever Peter Moylan has nominated himself Prado’s ‘Napoleon Dynamite.)
Anybody familiar with the off-beat but cult movie, “Napoleon Dynamite,” will remember the low-frills, “Vote For Pedro” T-shirts that Napoleon used to promote his friend (a transfer student from Mexico) for class president.
The T-shirt became so popular with movie fans that stores began producing and selling them to the public.
So here’s a marketing idea for the Braves: Start selling “Vote For Prado” T-shirts to push their second baseman, Martin Prado (a transfer student from Venezuela) for the All-Star Game.
I threw this idea out there on Twitter during Tuesday night’s Braves-Philadelphia game and it seemed to catch fire.
“Wish I had thought of this.”
“That would be fantastic.”
“Vote for Prado. I’m in!”
“They should pay you royalties from the sales.” (This one was my favorite.)
“Sounds like a very good idea,” Braves pitcher Peter Moylan said. “I’d buy one. The guy’s leading the world in hits. He’s playing unbelievable defense.”
Moylan said Prado likes American movies.
“He quotes ‘Stepbrothers’ all the time,” he said. “I’m sure he’s seen it.”
So I asked Prado if he had ever seen “Napoleon
“I fell asleep during it,” he said.
But: “I remember that part of the movie.”
His thoughts on the T-shirt concept?
“Oh, I don’t know,” he said. “I don’t think about stuff like that and the All-Star Game right now. You know me, I’m just thinking about today’s game.”
(UPDATE: We now have this comment from the Braves’ marketing department.)
“The T-shirts are a good idea and we will certainly look into them,” said Derek Schiller, the Braves’ executive vice president for sales and marketing. “Of course, just like Pedro, Prado has skills and people like him. I think all he needs is to find a friend on the team that will be his Napoleon Dynamite and this campaign might get some momentum.”
Prado is third in voting among National League second basemen, behind runaway leader Chase Utley of the Phillies and Rickie Weeks of Milwaukee. He leads the league with 71 hits and is hitting .321 with 27 RBI (remarkable for a player who has hit first or second most of the season). He also made a great defensive play in Tuesday’s 7-3 win, throwing out the Philadelphia’s Carlos Ruiz at home to complete a double play after Ruiz tried to score from third on a grounder.
For the second time this home stand, Prado noticed a, “Vote Prado All-Stars” banner hanging in the outfield.
“It makes me feel good,” he said. “But for me, it’s hard [to get recognized] because there are so many good second basemen who hit home runs, and that’s what people want to see.”
What this campaign needs is a T-shirt.
