Ladies and gents: We introduce Chan Gailey … visionary?

Chan Gailey is way ahead of the curve, at least according to Buffalo quarterback Trent Edwards. (AP photo)

Remember how so many Georgia Tech fans would look at Chan Gailey and think, “Vanilla”? Well, Buffalo quarterback Trent Edwards looks at looks at Chan Gailey and thinks, “Bill Walsh,” and “Sid Gillman” and “visionary.”

Gailey generally has had a solid reputation as an NFL assistant. That reputation seldom carried over at Tech, where fans mostly grew weary of  seven-win seasons, losing to Georgia and struggling to develop a quarterback. (I’ll post some offensive numbers in a moment.)

But Gailey, now the head coach of the Buffalo Bills after a stopover in Kansas City, is being lauded by Edwards. The quarterback told ESPN’s AFC East blogger, Tim Graham, “I’ll try to explain it as best as I can. I’ve never been around a guy that’s very conscientious of what offensive plays set up other plays. He’s doing a lot of motion and shifting, trying to disguise certain plays so it doesn’t look like the same plays to the defense.

“That’s what’s nice as a quarterback. You’re talking to him and he understands that certain formations we run a lot of the same plays. There’s coordinators that get pretty basic and pretty predictable. I feel like Chan isn’t going to be that predictable. It’s nice to keep the defense off-balance.”

I will grant you that this is Trent Edwards and not Tom Brady or Peyton Manning making the comments. Still, the comments are fairly staggering.

For what it’s worth, this is how Georgia Tech ranked in offense in the ACC during Gailey’s six seasons:

♦ 2002 (9 teams):  fifth in total offense, seventh in scoring.

♦ 2003 (9 teams): ninth in total offense, eighth in scoring.

♦ 2004 (11 teams):  eighth in offense, seventh in  scoring.

♦ 2005  (12 teams): ninth in offense, 10th in scoring.

♦ 2006 (12 teams): third in offense, fifth in scoring.

♦ 2007 (12 teams): third in offense, fifth in scoring.

OK, questions for the masses: Were we missing something, is Edwards missing something, or is the truth somewhere in between

you know, Kansas City didn’t think too much of Chan either firing him as their offensive coordinator after one season..

You idiot, KC’s new head coach came in……he was an OC himself…….and fired Gailey during preseason. KC sure turned it around after Gailey left……..didn’tn they ?…LOL
How many super bowls have you coached in ? Let’s see, Chan won a national championship at Troy. Coached Birmingham to the championship game in the World League.
Jerry Jones has said that firing Gailey was the biggest mistakes he’s ever made in football.
You people are unbelievable.

Anyone who is definding chan obviously likes to loose. in my experiance winning is much more fun that loosing. To say tech is a reciver killer…you must be an idiot. Do you think BeBe goes first round if he doesnt put up the gaudy numbers he did. Im going to bet not. This offense helped him and his draft status. Gailey sucks always has and always will. If you like gailey you like to loose. Im sure a few of you on here do enjoy loosing but not this Tech fan

While reading a Falcons article on NFL ranks in 2009 in throwing the deep ball. The Falcons, not surprisingly ranked 23rd in the league with only 31 pass plays of 20 yards or more.

Joe Flacco unsurprisingly ranked much higher with 44 passes of 20 yards or more and that without the receiving talent that the Falcons have.

Once again, I keep telling you people, the Falcons should have drafted Flacco. His passing percentage was higher and he has the necessary strong arm for an NFL quarterback.

All of a sudden, it’s really amazing what an incredible recruiter Gailey was for GT. Huh?? His supposedly incredible class with Dwyer, Morgan Burnett was ranked between 15-20th nationally. His other classes were ranked in the 40s or 50s. Not to long ago I remember all the posts about how horrible Gailey’s recruiting classes were. So which is it?

I must be missing something. You are under the impression that a coach makes the team. Players have nothing to do with it. So all the past and present top coaches have always had winning seasons and have always been at the top of the list on offense and defense. Before ripping a coach you should do a little research.

Over/under for Chan in Buffalo is 2 seasons….At Tech he was just good enough to get you beat….case in point: the last three games of his best season at Tech, 2006….Tech was 9-2 and on the brink of a special season…..What happened in those three games vs. UGa, WF ,and WVU? They lost them all by a field goal, despite Tashard running for over 100 yards in each game. That is hard to do.

JB, what’s a “mute” point? Is that one that doesn’t talk? Is that somewhat related to a “mime point?”

Let’s look up the word “mute” in dictionary.com:

moot1   /mut/ Show Spelled[moot] Show IPA
–adjective
1.open to discussion or debate; debatable; doubtful: a moot point.
2.of little or no practical value or meaning; purely academic.
3.Chiefly Law. not actual; theoretical; hypothetical.
–verb (used with object)
4.to present or introduce (any point, subject, project, etc.) for discussion.
5.to reduce or remove the practical significance of; make purely theoretical or academic.
6.Archaic. to argue (a case), esp. in a mock court.
–noun
7.an assembly of the people in early England exercising political, administrative, and judicial powers.
8.an argument or discussion, esp. of a hypothetical legal case.
9.Obsolete. a debate, argument, or discussion.

Is this more in line with what you were looking for?

gaily is a good coach but the level of talent that tech has on campus were mostly leftovers from the better college football teams. he had a few good players and now they are playing in the NFL but not enough. just think what tech will do now that PJ div 1aa players are playing out there. any team in college football that runs that type of offense that PJ likes to run will only recruit div 1aa players. most of the better players prefer to play in a college or pro style offense so that they will actually get better at football and have a shot at making an NFL team one day. good thing these PJ recruits will have a good degree to fall back on when the college football days are done.

all you tech fans have to do is match up a recruit that is recruited by PJ to play on the offense. compare their weight, height and overall high school career to any of the UGA recruits that richt recruited or any other SEC or ACC team recruited and look how much the talent level drops and difference in weight and height. your guys will need to be redhirted 2 years before they can even hang with those guys so they wont get seriously injured while playing them. the offlinemen he has coming in are giving up 20 to 30 pounds or more. their quickness wont help as they wiil get flatten by the bigger quicker defensive linemen.pj qb’s are either too short and lite or too tall and skinny. bothe types will get get crushed from them beating OJ qb”s take every play. his running backs are mostly converted corners or qbs that are too dumb to play quarterback. and again are just too little to take the beating that dwyer took the past two years every play. even when the running back didnt have the ball. that no fun at all. Ga tech is in trouble strting this year..they might win 8 ganes but next year i will be surprised if they win 6 as they only play few div 1aa teams.

JB and Mike S,
I agree with you that most WR won’t look at GT as a first choise, but how can you say that it is a WR killer. The first WR picked in the draft came from GT and that has nothing to do with his freshman stats under Gailey or who recruited him. It is true that CPJ’s system does lack some aspects that pro teams will look for in a WR but it also develops others. I guess we will all have to wait and see what Hill is able to do to prove anybody’s point though.

atl xman,
Considering that maybe 10% percent of that hate and dribble you predict will happen to GT and CPJ has happened yet I’ll take my chances. Good luck stopping Hill, Nesbitt, Allen, Cox, Jones, and the crew this year and good luck against Washington, Jackson, Perkins and the crew the year after. The D will do fine under Groh and as we all witnessed he recruited fine with no recruiting time, and he will kill it down the road.

Isn’t Trent Edwards the QB whose had multiple concussions??? I doubt Edwards has ever had a decent OC and now he THINKS he’s got one, too many hits to the head will cause delusions of grandeur!

Chan has been and will continue to be mediocre at best. Nothing ventured, nothing gained with Chan Gailey!

Remember when Chan had his lst news conference in Buffalo and talked about other coaches not wanting the job and him saying ‘he was GLAD TO BE THERE’ … of course he’s glad to be there … it’s the ONLY place that wanted him!

What did they go through … 10 candidated who said no before he said yes. I know the Buffalo fans wished he had said no as well … poor Buffalo!

For you idiots who say, “Paul Johnson is winning with Chan Gaileys players and we’ll see how he does with his own recruits.” Navy is still winning with Paul Johnson’s recruits and have been ranked higher than UGA, just as Tech is. Suck on that for a while.

Mark “Fake Tan” Richt can’t win with 5 Star players. He couldn’t even win with NFL players, so don’t get so excited about your over rated recruits.

Coach Gailey knows football very well. He knows how to coach otherwise he wouldn’t keep getting great jobs.
