In my six-point plan to fix the Hawks, Josh Smith stays but Joe Johnson goes. (Curtis Compton/AJC)
It’s the offseason. I’m cracking open a six-pack for the Hawks – not for celebration but for reconstruction.
The Hawks don’t need to strip everything down after getting swept out of the second round for the second year in a row, but they clearly can’t thrive as currently built.
Here goes:
♦ 1.) Make a coaching change. Hawks general manager Rick Sund has doubts about Mike Woodson. Otherwise he would not have given him only a two-year contract two years ago, or he would have extended him before (or during) this season. The Hawks have improved in many areas under Woodson, most notably the win total. But the team’s half-court offense has been an issue throughout Woodson’s tenure. Creativity is not his strong-suit. It also became clear in this postseason that players have stopped listening to him. Being stretched to seven games by Milwaukee (which lost its best player, Andrew Bogut, three weeks before the playoffs) was a warning sign. Getting smacked by Orlando by embarrassing margins reaffirmed either poor preparation by Woodson or that players were tuning him out. A head coach needs to get a team to play a certain way, with a toughness and resolve that we saw from the Bucks. Woodson hasn’t done that. Conclusion: This is as high as the Hawks will go with him. If he gets fired, don’t be surprised if he is replaced by assistant Larry Drew. There will be a push for a high-profile replacement, like Jeff Van Gundy, Avery Johnson or, in a dream world, Doc Rivers. But if the Hawks can’t lure one of them, and if ownership is resistant to spending big money, hiring Drew can be easily rationalized. He is liked and respected by players. He would bring more creativity to the offense. He is in-tune with the team’s problems, its strengths and weaknesses. The risk is that Drew never has been a head coach before. But regardless of who would get the job, a new voice is needed.
All of the Hawks' problems are not Mike Woodson's fault, but a new voice is needed to get team to the next level. (AP photo)
♦ 2.) Sign-and-trade Joe Johnson. I thought it was at least 50-50 Johnson would re-sign with the Hawks until his comments after Game 3. He has proven himself to be in that second tier of stars, which is fine. But his lack of leadership and three years of mostly dreadful playoff performances have damaged his reputation. Even worse, Johnson seems to have checked out mentally. He still has value on the open market. There are enough teams out there who are looking for a scorer and have money to spend. A sign-and-trade could net a nice player in return: whether a shooting guard, point guard or starting caliber center. Among the backup options at shooting guard, one name that already has popped up as a possible replacement is Milwaukee’s John Salmons. He obviously isn’t the scorer Johnson in, but he averaged nearly 20 per game in Milwaukee after a trade from Chicago this year.
♦ 3.) Don’t trade Josh Smith. Yes, this postseason was a microcosm of what’s wrong with Smith. He took over Game 2 against the Bucks, just as he took over so many games during the season. But he was awful in too many games and justifiably was criticized nationally for loafing it on defense. During a time out in Game 4 Monday night, Smith was paying more attention to the “Kiss Cam” on the Philips Arena scoreboard than Woodson during a time-out, and a fan yelled, “Pay attention, Josh!” But remember two things: 1) For most of this season, the commentary about Smith was positive – how much he had matured and how he deserved to be in the All-Star Game; 2) He has had only one head coach since leaving high school: Woodson. There’s a great danger in trading Smith if another coach in another city helps him become the player he can be. Even after six seasons, it’s too early to give up on him. His potential is too great.
♦ 4.) Acquire a center (or Chris Bosh): A strong defensive center would give the Hawks the physical presence they desperately need in the post and allow them to move Al Horford to power forward and Smith to small forward. Marvin Williams can take a seat on the bench, or on a plane out of town. Bosh, who will be a free agent and also could be part of a sign-and-trade, is a tantalizing alternative. First, he would love to come back to Atlanta (where he played at Georgia Tech). He is not a true center but he is 6-10 and would bring some offense to help compensate for Johnson’s loss. A front line of Bosh, Horford and Smith certainly would rank among the league’s best.
♦ 5.) Bench Mike Bibby: There’s no nice way to put this: He got his new contract and then took a significant step back this season. His scoring average dropped from 14.9 to 9.1, his shooting percentage from 43.5 to 41.6, his assists from 5.0 to 3.9. Woodson correctly chopped down his minutes (34.7 to 27.4). Bibby is too much of a liability defensively. With two years left on his contract, he’ll be difficult to trade. But at worse he’s a shooter to bring off the bench. Who to start? If Sund can’t acquire a veteran point guard and leader, take a look at Jeff Teague. He was mostly buried on Woodson’s bench, averaging 10 minutes a game, but we know he can bring speed to the lineup. Leadership? Those answers will come. But he can’t possibly be worse.
♦ 6.) Get tougher: This sort of goes back to coaching and a team’s identity. “Talent” doesn’t pertain only to a team’s skill level. Talent can be intelligence and physical and mental toughness. Talent can be heart. Too often, the Hawks have lacked that. Horford called out his teammates for it and he was dead on. Those intangibles can help a team overcome injuries and adversity. Milwaukee was a difficult team to play against. Charlotte was a more difficult team than the Hawks for Orlando to play against — not because of “skill” talent but because of the other kind of talent. There needs to be an in-house mandate by the Hawks of playing to a standard. If that exists now, they’re clearly ignoring it.

WJ yep. It will never be the exact same. But thats the general idea. There are A ton of GOOD UFA coming up next year. Amare is the main target. Will Denver part with Mr.Big Shot?? the play of Ty Lawson says yes. Josh Marvin Zsa Zsa and Bibby are the outgoing targets. Get those two then maybe just maybe you can lure a few of the others at bargain prices for a chance to win and win another Ring. Oh yea somebody got spend some money!! Lux tax baby. But if you are putting an Allstar lineup on the floor guess what…. seats are filled money is made and maybe just maybe a RING is WON!!! And after the worst BEAT Down in Playoff history, Yeah you need something drastic.

You clowns are crazy, I would not trade Josh. I repeat I would not trade Josh S. You guys must not have seen this kid play all season. First of all the kid can score consistently, against bigger guys inside Josh is quicker, stronger, and can jump over most bigs except Dwight H. Josh is an excellent passer from in the post and outside. Many of Horford’s easy baskets are because of him. At times and I watched 95% of their games this season Josh is a quadruple threat, with scoring, assists, blocks, rebounds, and even steals. The problem is like any young talent he got frustrated in the playoffs. Josh all season has had to cover defensively for Bibby, Crawford, and J.J. lack of defensive effort on the perimeter. When your being killed inside and being told to stay at home it is hard to get blocked shots and when your killing yourself on defense how hard are you going to play with prima donnas jacking up shots and playing no defense and not passing the ball. Under the right coaching Josh will be fine and will probably be better. I agree with Schultz sign and trade joe for a quality player – J. Salmons. Sign Brendan Haywood to play center and Luke Ridnour to mentor J. Teague and run play up and down basketball. Please get rid of M. Bibby trade him for 4 lug nuts and a cup of coffee. Quit hating on Josh Smith you playoff arm chair coaches!!! He is an emotional player but not a bad guy or player!!! Just needs a good coach!!!!

Ownership? What ownership? They have they own issues to deal with first, so how they going to have a say about the Hawks? Now its Sund who’s the only one who really knows what’s going on, just like with Knight when he was the GM. And that’s why Knight resigned cause he knew what was up.

Listenup!!!,
Thats a nice fantasy, but what so many posters fail to realize is, the Hawks have no cap room to sign any of the major players.
And whats up with all these crazy sign and trade scenarios people are coming up with. Why would a team who has cap space and is willing to sign Joe Johnson want to give you one of their important pieces? Sure they would part with a draft pick or a role player, like the Hawks did when they sign Joe from Phoenix, but thats about it.

Damn Jeff, well said. You hit the nail directly on the head in this one. Woody has got to go, we need a new voice and new schemes on both ends of the floor. If we signed Bosh and traded Joe for Salmons, we would be ready to truly contend in the East. I agree about trading Marvin and about Bibby needing to ride the pine or go. Worst-case scenario, if we don’t get Bosh, and release Joe outright, we could trade Marvin and/or later draft picks to acquire a Center and a 2 guard in the draft. I also agree about Teague. We saw a glimpse of the Rondo-like ability he has in the last game of the season against Cleveland. You couldn’t have said it better about Joe not being a leader. Whatever happens, there will not be another offseason like this one for a long time in the NBA, and I think the Hawks should approach it aggressively. Bosh should be our biggest priority

Jeff;
Thought your mention of Larry Drew was an interesting one…definitely see your points in his favor. However, my sense is moving in that direction breeds trouble, especially with the age and psyche of this group. The implosion over the last three-four weeks suggests there may be deeper problems regarding chemistry than just x’s and o’s. In fact, many of us already have alluded to our concerns relative to leadership (or lack thereof) throughout the Hawks entire organization. Bringing in an unproven commodity may look good on the balance sheet but I can see it being a real problem down the line given the youth and obvious quirks within the Hawks locker room.
For these same reasons, it seems a coach who wields a strong hand, has a pedigree beyond reproach and a history of winning would be ideal. Certainly, rapport with the players is an important consideration. In this scenario, Avery Johnson seems like the best choice.
Before any of this can happen, it seems ASG has to have a clear vision as to what they’re ultimately trying to accomplish. Are their goals—both player and coach-wise—short or longer-term (especially if JJ is a non-factor next year)? Coaching costs/needs will certainly play into this.
While I know you couldn’t cover everything, there was little reference to basketball IQ in any of your player scenarios. Except for Horford, this is an area where the team is SORELY lacking. Even with the right coach, tipping the delicate balance here the wrong way could be a minefield. Although he’s a veteran and plays hard, one could argue John Salmons leaves a lot to be desired in this area (shot selection, crunch-time decisions).
Lots of room for discussions among your suggestions…will be interesting!

As far as the Josh issue. I think he should be kept too. HE does a lot for the team and his versatility and energy is very important. But his presence does hamper the situation of playing Al Horford at the Power forward position. The most creative situation would be to play both of them their.
First the Hawks need to find a serviceable big man, not that high on Haywood, but maybe him or my preference….draft the big man from Florida State. Insert him in as your starting center, slide Al to the power forward, and bring Josh off the bench. Alibi or whoever could start give you 6-8 minutes at the start of each half and with Zaza in reserve, you could get you 30-35 minutes a game out of that rotation. YOu then play Horford at center only in limited spurts, usually in the 4th quater. I figure Al can get about 15-20 minutes at center and 15-20 at power forward and Josh could come off the bench and still get his 30 minutes a night. His energy would also improve a lackluster bench too.

HMMMMMMM-I don’t know whether you’re being sarcastic or you’re just clueless. Under Woodson, Smoove was our PF and was far too often required to defend against PG’s and SG’s on the perimeter. However, those PG’s and SG’s weren’t required to defend against him. At SF under and playing under a HC with a clue, Smoove would be able to do a much better job of defending SF’s like Granger and CAnthony out on the perimeter, without drawing fowls. On the other hand, those same SF’s would have a very difficult time trying to defend him in the paint without drawing fowls.
Teams would most likely have to double team him in the post because of the match-up problems he’d create. And as far as your point about his issues defending PG’s and SG’s, there are very few, if any, SF’s that can match the speed, quickness and penetrating ability of the average PG or SG.
We’ve seen how devastating it can be when a team has, or can create, match-up problems(Orlando). Well, at SF, Smoove would automatically creates match-up problems that favor us, for most teams. CBosh’s outside shooting ability can pull Howard away from the basket and both Horford and Smoove can post-up and out muscle anyone else on their team at their respective positions.

Chris Bosh is a force on offense. He won’t disappear in the playoffs like JJ did. I think you’ve got to sign a good free agent to get a second good free agent to sign. JJ & Woodson need to go period. Who wants any player like JJ on their team that takes shots at fans for HIS sorry ass play ? What does he expect home fans to do when he goes 3 for 15 shooting ? Applaud ?

JJ is supposed to our top scorer. But he wil score 25,32,then 8 & 12. Kobe,Wade,LeBron, etc. don’t dissapear in games like he does. If you tell me ‘he ain’t either of those players” then why is he getting paid like those players then ? You can get a lot more for that money than JJ.

The hawks need to give max money to keep JJ happy–they will need his leadership next year, since the team will still be young. Woody will be looking around for jobs without a big raise, so the hawks owners need to step up with a big cash raise, ASAP! With D-Wade next year and a point guard, this hawk team will be challenging cleveland for the east title. Mark it down!

Jeff Teague>>>>A.J Price
Joe Johnson>>>Jamal Crawford
Gordon Heyward>>>Travis Outlaw, Marvin Williams, Mario West
Josh Smith>>>>>Zaza/Travis Outlaw/Randolph Morris
Al Horford>>>>>Brendan Heywood/Jason Collins
We can win a title with this (Coupled with the right coach). Some of you are making too many changes to a 53 win squad. Half of it is nonsense/impossible moves. Be realistic please. PG was a huge problem. With Price and Teague you get twp big PG’s Teague at 6′2 and Price at 6′3 and poth play solid D and can stay in front of their man. With a new coach we wont have to worry about that stupid switching anymore. Gordon Heyward gets the start because he’s a beast pure shooter and More athletic/coordinated than Marvin. He will space the floor for us. Teague needs to dominate he ball and keep ito ut of JJ’s hands. He just moves too slow (it’s so annoying, but this might be b/c of
Woodson) he just needs to catch and finish quickly. I see Teague turning into a combination of Tony Parker and Rajon Rondo (somwhere in between).
Price is an exellent shooter who can play off the ball with the second unit since Jamal is at his best with it in his hands. Price is a good Ball handler as well. All of the Wings will be neede in the future (i’m assuming LeBron will stay in the East). We also have size up front with Heywood and others.

Just my thoughts – there is no way Joe does a sign and trade to a losing team. He already made it clear that he is not willing to take a step backwards. So the whole CBosh idea is some BS because JJ is not going to Toronto. Josh cannot play the 3. He is a horrible jumpshooter and on the ball defender and would struggle against most 3’s in this league. I know he played the 3 when he first entered the league but the Hawks didn’t win many games then either. Al just doesn’t have the size to play center consistently and effectively and much of his success this year was due to help defense from Josh. Crawford cannot replace Joe. He had one of his better years in shooting percentage but historically, he’s been streaky and averaged 20ppg once in his 10 years. He has bad habits and a propensity for ballhogging so it gets the Hawks nowhere. He’s fool’s gold. For the record, DWade is not coming to Atlanta so people need to start setting realistic goals.

BOSTON IS BEATING CLEVELAND BY 23! IS DOC RIVERS A GREAT COAGH OR WHAT? THAT’S WHO THE HAWKS NEED! GIVE DOC AND BOSH TOP DOLLAR, KEYS TO THE CITY, AND TEAM OWNERSHIP! SIGN AND TRADE JJ FOR EITHER TONY PARKER OR SALMONS. A front court of Josh, Horford, and Bosh will be no worse than the frontcourts of Boston and the MJ Bulls. SIT BIBBY DOWN! IF DOC CAN MAKE WILD CHILD RONDO INTO A GREAT PG THEN HE CAN DO THE SAME W/TEAGUE! BTW, IF CLEVELAND LOSES THIS SERIES, YOU THINK LEBRON IS RE-SIGNING?? NO WAY, AND THE HAWKS WILL HAVE A SMALL CHANCE OF GETTING HIM. BUT THE MOST LIKELY CASE SCENERIO FOR LEBRON IS “SHOWTIME.” YES, THE LAKERS! I HAVE NOT SEEN SHOWTIME IN YEARS! KOBE GETS TRADED TO THE TEAM W/ THE #! PICK. LAKERS SIGN LEBRON AND DRAFT JOHN WALL! IF CLEVELAND GETS ELIMINATED, THIS WILL HAPPEN!

Smoove @ SF = current day Andrei Kirilenko
His jumshot has NOT improved in the 6 years he’s been in the league.
His offense is based on him getting out in transition and taking slower PFs off the dribble. He cannot take quicker SFs off the dribble.
People who want to move Smoove to SF, want to limit him back to what he was back in 2005. Playing him at SF takes him away from the rim ( like what happened in the Orlando series ).

I feel bad for Woodson. He has actually done a great job with the Hawks. He elevated them from a lottery team to a playoff team. I think this team needs a change in personnel more than it needs a change in coaching. This team has reached its ceiling. The Hawks in their current form will only manage to make the playoffs but never seriously contend for anything.

Let Woody go. Hire Jeff Van Gundy or someone else with a lot of head coaching experience. Sign & Trade Joe, along with Bibby (& maybe a 2nd Rounder) to New Orleans for Chris Paul. Trade Josh Smith & the rights to Josh Childress to Phoenix for Amare Stoudemire (who could actually opt out this year). Phoenix would sign Childress to replace Grant Hill, who might retire or he could also opt out after the season. Use this year’s 1st Rounder to take someone like Lance Stephenson, Greivis Vasquez, or Quincy Pondexter to add some depth to the SG/SF spot. Have a starting lineup in 2010-11 of Chris Paul, Jamal Crawford, Marvin Williams, Amare Stoudemire, and Al Horford.

Josh smith is the face of the franchise and 24, going no where. Joe johnson is well past his prime and his asking price is to high for a 2 option.
It’s no point giving all that money to a second tier guy when you still need to acquire a true star to compliment him with yet another maximum pay scale.
We actually tried building around Joe back in 05 and it hasn’t quite worked out, now we have to compliment our young/dynamic front line excluding williams!!!!!

I wish half of you people had a clue! Josh Smith is a cancer and no matter what team he is on his team will fail if he is a center piece. Also, what is the deal with Childress? He was at best an average player. Marvin is not worthy of a 3 pick but, he is a solid player. He doesn’t have plays ran for him or does he get the attempts that others get. Let’s package Smith and get a sign and trade with Johnson and get us a Center and a true point. This team is only a couple of players away from being a contender. But, listening to half of you people talk about bringing back Chillz and throwing Marvin away have really missed the boat. But, the biggest thing is getting rid of Josh Smith!!!! He is a cancer and all you will do is be drawn to being lazy and sorry because that is the kind of player he is.

Jsmoove has always been my fave player, but I must admit that he is one of the most unbalanced players in the league. Only good coaching will work to make him play well at the 3, and I do actually believe Larry Drew is the best option for that spot, because during the games he would always be the one talking to Josh during TOs and holding him back from the refs. Drew is the one person Smoove respects and if he becomes the head coach,
