Hawks make quick exit against Magic, and change is needed

Josh Smith drifted too often. Joe Johnson had a dreadful postseason. It's no wonder the Hawks are out of the playoffs after getting swept by Orlando. (Curtis Compton/AJC)

They tried a little harder. Maybe that will count for something when the front office looks at game tape and tries to determine who should stay, who should go, who looked like the only thing that really mattered was direct deposit.

They tried a little harder. A little late, guys.

There has been a sense of inevitability in this series since the Hawks looked comatose in Game 2, getting outscored 28-10 in the second quarter, 32-11 in the third and – well, everybody pretty much stopped paying attention after that.

That’s a problem. Playing in a home arena with empty seats and empty hopes, the Hawks lost to Orlando 98-84 on Monday night.  That’s a wrap.

You were thinking if the Hawks played well, they could win one or two games in this series. If things went really well, maybe they could stretch Orlando to seven games.

Instead what you got was Orlando in seven days.

The Magic won by spreads of 43, 14, 30 and 14 points – an average of 25.2. That’s worse than the average 18-point margin  in Cleveland’s four-game sweep in the second round last year. In fact, that’s the biggest deficit in NBA playoff history for a four-game sweep.

Players seemed to tune out Mike Woodson in the postseason. (Curtis Compton/AJC)

Mike Woodson was outcoached in both playoff series. (Curtis Compton/AJC)

Forget the 53-29 record. Does 25.2 sound like progress?

Al Horford gets it. He’s one of the few on this team who gets it. Horford ripped into teammates for their lack of effort following the 105-75 loss in Game 3, when the Hawks should have played with desperation. He didn’t back off Monday.

“We had high

expectations,” he said. “We wanted to be the three seed and we felt things would be a little different matching up with them. But it didn’t work that way for us.”

What was the difference?

“Just watch and see [Orlando’s] level of intensity that they played with. That defines their team. They’re a championship caliber team. Just take that in and play like that for next season.

“It takes a whole lot of effort. It’s almost to the point where you have to make yourself feel uncomfortable out there. We didn’t have that this year. With some of our guys when fatigue set in, everybody kind of shied away from it.”

There’s your perfect post-game wrap-up.

Not hard to guess who's moving on in the playoffs. (Jason Getz/AJC)

Not hard to guess who's moving on in the playoffs. (Jason Getz/AJC)

Coach Mike Woodson, despite a 53-win regular season, seemed to lose his players’ attention.

Joe Johnson, despite a fourth straight All-Star appearance, seemed to lose any great desire to earn the respect of this city or his teammates.

Josh Smith, the occasional flash of brilliance, seemed to lose his way.

After so much improvement over the past few years, the Hawks just took a significant step back. They suffered of the most embarrassing playoff exits in Atlanta pro sports history. Good luck to general manager Rick Sund and Atlanta Spirit owners as they try to figure out which team is closer to reality – the team that won 53 games or the one that showed significant character and chemistry flaws in this postseason.

The Magic shot 74 percent in the first quarter and led by 11. That lead grew to 17 in the third quarter. The Hawks didn’t quit this time. They got it back to nine before the fourth. But when the Magic opened the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run, it was over.

Johnson was booed early in the game. Atlanta sports’ newest home villain said following Game 3 that he didn’t care if fans showed up or not. He repeated his own no-show act in Game 4. He made only 5 of 15 and finished with 14 points. In four games, Johnson went 17 for 57 (29.8 percent), with scoring totals of 10, 19, 8 and 14 (average: 12.7).

There’s a difference between being embarrassed and being disappointed. Losing a playoff series is disappointing. Losing playoff games by lopsided margins because of lack of effort is embarrassing. That’s not about talent.  It’s about character, chemistry and coaching.

If ownership and Sund don’t make a coaching change, they basically are saying that getting pushed to the brink of elimination by an undermanned Milwaukee team in round one and getting waxed by a combined 87 points in three games against Orlando in round two was an aberration.

The bet here is they’ll decide otherwise. Woodson will be gone.

Woodson  hasn’t endeared himself to the masses. The fan base is split on him. The players hardly leave the impression that they’re playing for his future employment.

This must is certain: The postseason shouldn’t have ended with such a bitter taste. Something has to change.

Chpatt,

I agree with your comments 110%, coaching is the key to branding these players, while I am somewhat PISSED at Joe and some of the other players right now, its not entirely their fault. Woodson is a great PLAYER’S Coach in terms of interpersonal skills, but he lacks overall execution, strategy, passion, and the ability to make adjustments as great coaches do… he would be an absolutely superb assistant coach as was proven under Larry Brown and that championship Detroit Piston’s team. On the flip side, Woodson( yes I said it) is not entirely at fault as well, the front office, both current and former (Billy Knight) failed to make smart and logical decisions in drafts and free agency that kinda came back and bit us in the azz….. And what I mean is that we had ample opportunities to get key players in lottery picks for consecutive seasons and the front office FAILED to fill holes and this forced the Hawks(which did a great job at holding their own over the last few seasons) to put players in roles that involved them in playing in positions that were not necessarily their correct positions (Horford), the inability to get a point guard in prior drafts (Chris Paul, Deron Williams) is really biting us in the azz right now… the list goes on…..

As far as being the worse basketball fans in the NBA, I believe that comes from years of disappointments and horrible front office decisions made by the franchise over the years. Over the last few years, we have really been pumped up, but to have a lackluster performance by the Hawks after putting so much money, time, and credit to them is very discouraging. We understand that things happen, and we are very proud of what the Hawks accomplished even though my tone at moment may seem grime. Frankly, I believe the that Joe has showed his true colors in this postseason this year, he needs to be gone by the time I finish this paragraph, and he needs to carry Woodson right out the door with him. Like I said to dashizz earlier, I personally would rather the Hawks sacrifice another 50 + win season in order to refurnish this team then to make it to the third seed and get smashed again in the playoffs!!!!!!

And oh yeah, in reference to the few who complain about the Fans fussing and knocking the team, We Have Great Reason To!!! We had a above average team in place to contend…..sure some of us probably expected too much from the Hawks, but we are Fans, we should have great expectations!!! Probably at times, we might have been a little unrealistic in their expectations, but they were good expectations. Personally, the Hawks finished pretty much like I expected, but what I didn’t expect was to be beaten by a 101 point margin over the 4 game series but I guess shid happens!!!! Honestly, our biggest problem is their doesn’t seem to be enough bashers in our franchises, sometimes we seem to just go with the flow and hope that a championship team will just fall from the sky…..We have been saying the phrase “Well, just wait until next year” for how long now???? Let’s wake up!!! This team, coach, front office has got as far as they are capable of getting…….. changes definitely need to be made!!!!!!!!!!!

This Team had a great Year. But they were built to Fail in the playoffs. You sign Morris Joe Smith and Collins to deal with HowArd n ShAq??? Yeah right. Taking TeAgue at point wasn’t too heady also. Yeah Woody has his faults but his bAck was against the wAll so he played jj till he dropped to make sure we got 53 wins. The Hawks can beef up because Amare Shaq anddd Dirk will all be avAilable. Let Josh Jamal n Marvin go via trade n walk. Denver is willing to letting Billups go because of Lawson scoop him up. If the best you can do At coach is Avery Johnson then bring Woody back with a Deal. But all this will be moot next summer cAuse lockout is coming. These 3 sets of sweeps just sealed that deal. The NBA lost ALOT of money off these sweeps.

rick sund is a smart and experienced basketball man. the success of last year’s season forced management to give coach woodson and this team one more year. the difficult but brutal facts are this: mike woodson could demand discipline, intensity, and be an exceptional strategist and it would not matter because of the personnel on this team. the hawks are predominantly made up of players that want what is best for themselves and not for the whole. someone said it best a few weeks ago: the atlanta hawks are nothing more than a highly paid aau team. our arena is dubbed the highlight factory which only perpetuates the problem. the hawks run offensive isolation because that is what the players are going to do regardless of what is called. orlando plays team defense, with intensity and GUARDS THE BALL, which in turn made the hawks look stupid. atlanta is a basketball savvy town. you either want highlights or championships. it is very difficult to have both.

A city without a local big time franchise owner (or owners) cannot have a successful NBA basketball team. That is the change needed or else get rid of the whole mess locally.

The Hawks can bring in Pat Riley as a coach, can bring in Lenny Wilkens as his assistant, the truth is,the problem with the team, they need a reputable center. And until that is fulfilled, teams like the Bulls, ala Bucks will continue to our team to the river just to get blown by teams like Orlando, Cleveland, and Boston

Note to Hawks management…. You set back and waited at the beginning of the year until all the legitimate free agents were gone and wound up getting leftovers who gave you nothing. Don’t make the same mistake again by delaying the inevitible. If you are serious about winning a championship, you must move quickly to bring in a new coach and then go after the players that will take this team to the next level. You have already had your wish lists in place for coach and players because the basic flaws of this team which led to this beat down to Orlando has been obvious for all to see from the start of the season. Also, if you are not willing to spend to win, you might as well leave things as they are so you can at least win in the regular season. Get moving!!!!!!

Jeff, I guess the difference between the time the Braves lost four straight games, after going up two games to none in the 1996 World Series, and when they got swept four straight, with no wins in the 1999 World Series, is that the Braves already had experienced playoff success, including several National League Championships, and a World Series win, by the time those things happened. Maybe that made the fans not feel as bad. Also, for the most part, in those days, Bobby Cox was liked.

Now, as to this series. Yes, the Hawks stagnated, and played horribly in this series. Essentially, they had the exact same season as they had last year. A seven game gutting it out first round win, and a sweep in the semis

Since Johnson made his comments, I’ve said he should be gone. I don;t care how good a guy is on the court. It isnt about him, and the guys in his locker room. The fans pay this jerk’s salary, and, if he doesn’t care about the fans of the Atlanta Hawks, its time for him to go to a place where maybe he will care about the fans.

As for Woodson: I know I’m in the minority, but I’ve felt that he should be retained. My viewpoint is that the team’s record improved every year with him as the coach, from 13 win laughingstock his first year, to 53 wins this year. I’ve felt you dont fire a guy for improving, but I do see your point. The Hawks didnt make playoff advancement this year, and got embarrassed by the Magic.

This might sound negative, but, has anyone thought that maybe this team has just maxed out, and this is as far as they can go? The Hawks are a good, solid, NBA team, but they dont have the Kobe, Tim Duncan, Lebron, Howard, superstar that can make a difference in winning a championship. Look at the NBA dynastys in the three previous decades. The Spurs won four championships. They had Duncan, and for a while, Robinson. The Lakers have Kobe, and for a while, had Shaq. They won three titles together. The 80s Lakers had Kareem and Magic. Four titles there. The 80s Celts had Bird and Mchale. Another three titles. All the guys I just mentioned are superstars, who are, or will be, in the Basketball Hall of Fame. The Hawks don’t have a Dwight Howard or Lebron who can win you a title. Joe Johhson and Josh Smith arent any of the guys I mentioned. My feeling: The Hawks are a good team, that is one superstar short of championship caliber.

I dont know what happens from here. Even if they get rid of Woodson, how much better will it get? I think the Hawks have maxed out, but maybe a coaching change next season, and some tweaks in the roster here, or there, will prove me wrong.

Woodson has no real players to work with at this point–I’m surprised that the team got as far as they did. Josh Smith is so overrated. Who do you want to see come back, Lon Kruger? HA! In order for the Hawks to sign a big name, someone would want to have to come to Atlanta and that’s not happening. Like I said before, your Hawks got chewed up and spit out by the Magic.

Jeff Van Gundy would be the perfect coach for this team! We should find a way to trade Marvin Williams, and perhaps let Joe go if we could somehow sign TMac or Wade. Then add a true big man like Ilgauskus. Whoever said trade J Smith for Parker is nuts!

There are a lot of nutt cases in this town. Before Woodson showed up in Atlanta, NOBODY showed up at Phillips Arena! He’s not the problem. He coached virtually no players and made us all want to go to the games. Now that he has some players, it’s apparent that he needs to mix it up a little. Joe needs to GO! I support the coach because he’s good.

Why are we so quick to judge this team only on these last four games? The Hawks just don’t match up well with the Magic. (Huge understatement!) Dwight Howard has a field day whenever he plays the Hawks. I’m disappointed, but not surprised by the sweep. The margin of defeat was alarming. But, let’s not forget to celebrate the great season. The Hawks finished as number 4 in the conference. The top 3 teams are still playing. Don’t act so shocked and surprised!

People are suggesting different moves of players and and the coach. While I agree that it is time for Woody to go, the real problem is the ownership. Your Atlanta Spirit Group is the real problem, they are a joke as a ownership and management organization. They will never make the committment nor pay the money to field a real contender in either basketball or hockey. These owners are all a bunch of chumps and losers, and it is reflected by the teams that they own.

This Atlanta Hawk team is one big man away from taking the next step. You got to have a 7 footer or two to compete against the elite teams in the NBA. I agree they played like crap the entire playoffs, they did not compete at a high level. They lost their will every time Dwight dunked the ball. This Hawk team has to play with heart night in and night out, but since they choose not to I will remind you that attitude reflects leadership and that means despite his accomplishments Coach Woodson may have to go. Josh Smith walking down the court was a disgrace; he should really be ashamed!WHERE IS THE HUSTLE! Compete or get the hell off the floor! Not Hawks fans but definite fans of teh NBA and we have season tickets with the Hawks, adding Wade will not solve the problems in Atlanta. What is needed is a coach that can motivate this team to work even harder on the road and remind them that “HUSTLE” is mandatory and non-negotiable! KEEP THEM AND TEACH THEM!!

I think there is one thing everyone can agree on. On the Hawks best days they are not better than Orlando or Cleveland, and I would also give a slight nod to the Celtics.

I’m not advocating we blow the team up, but it’s obvious that JJ isn’t going to carry them on his shoulders through the playoffs like a real star should, but is anyone better willing to come here? Team chemistry is obviously an issue. The coaching is obviously intertwined with the chemistry, and we have several guys on this team that are lazy. You would think a million dollar pay check every year would be plenty reason to get a guy fired up about playing a game for a living. I guess it doesn’t work that way.

JJ and Smith are by far our two best players, but they are more apt to run and hide or cry about adversity.

Yes it’s disappointing, but with the right moves, Rick Sund can still build this team into a championship-caliber team.

1) Coach Woodson has to go. Doc Rivers wants out of Boston and would be my first choice. But Doc may want to take some time off to watch his kids. If so, Avery Johnson is available.

2) Neither Joe Johnson nor Chris Bosh are worth the ‘max contracts’ they are seeking. But that said, with a change in coaching, I’d try to resign Joe and get Chris Bosh here. The Hawks need a 5 and Bosh is a good one. With Al Horford, that gives us a heckuva front line.

3) Mike Bibby is done – as others have said his defensive skills have eroded and he’s not a great Eastern Conference point. Losing Joe Johnson would open up more options, but if New Orleans is serious about moving Chris Paul, go for it. Rajean Rondo may also be available out of Boston. Either all-star improves the point guard spot (obviously) and changes this team completely.

4) Likewise, addition of a superstar like D Wade makes this team a constant threat to Cleveland in the East. A player his caliber may not be possible right now though. That is admittedly a long shot.

Be realistic and do what you can do, Hawks.

But then I thought, “You know what? I’d rather enjoy hanging out with my father than go downtown and be pissed off for 2.5 hours.” So I turned down the tickets, and we ate some awesome ribs.

That should yell you something, Atlanta Spirit. When a 29-year-old native Atlantan male, who had a Hawks Starter jacket in 1993, is offered free suite tickets with free beer throughout the game, and turns them down, you got a problem.

Woodson probably should have coached his last game in Atlanta… It is time for a change; however they need to get the right coach… A Larry Brown type or George Karl type…. Woodson has earned the right to coach another team based on the turn-around he has completed in Atlanta…

Joe Johnson is a solid player much like Joe dumars was for the pistons… But he is no D-WADE… If we let JJ go, we need to go after D-Wade who would be a huge upgrade. Also I would be in favor of keeping JJ and go after A. Stoudamaire from Phoenix… Moving Horford to PF, and JS to SF…putting M. Williams on the bench that is where he belongs being a streaky shooter…
Here would be the changes I would go with:

NEW HEAD COACH ( Larry Brown Type or George Karl Type)

Starters
C- A. Stoudamaire form the Suns
PF- Horford
SF- J. Smith
SG- J. Johnson (or D-WADE)
PG- Teague/Bibby
Bench
Crawford
M. Williams
Pachailu
Bibby/Teague
J. Smith
Collins
Morris
