Mike Woodson's Hawks have been inconsistent in the playoffs.
There’s a saying in sports that a playoff series doesn’t really begin until a team loses a home game.
It’s understandable if you’re not feeling that way after seeing the Hawks dismembered in Game 1 and fizzle in Game 2 against Orlando, losing two games of this playoff series by a combined 57 points. But back now in Philips Arena, where all is usually well, this is the Hawks’ last chance to show a pulse — and maintain it for 48 minutes.
It has been stated enough times in this corner but here we go again: The Hawks are at the point in their evolution where they shouldn’t be defined by the regular season (53-29) but by the postseason (4-3 over undermanned Milwaukee; 0-2 against Orlando).
Granted, only the most optimistic of folks projected them to beat Orlando in this series. The Magic reached the finals last year. They may win the championship this year. They’re superior at basketball’s two key positions: center and point guard.
But what you wanted to see from the Hawks this series is passion, intelligence and consistency under fire, and too often that hasn’t been the case.
Can they win tonight? Absolutely. In a 2-0 series, the trailing home team tends to play its best game, knowing at 3-0 the series probably is over. (For what it’s worth, Las Vegas has this as a close game: The Magic are favored by 2 to 2 1/2 points.)
The Hawks’ objectives shouldn’t change: pound Dwight Howard inside as much as possible with rotating hackers (Zaza Pachulia, Joe Smith, Jason Collins). Play pressure defense to try and force turnovers. Hope Orlando doesn’t get hot from trey-range. See where you’re at in the fourth quarter.
The Hawks are 37-8 at home this year (34-7 in the regular season; 3-1 in the playoffs). However, Philips Arena is not a cure all. We saw Milwaukee win Game 5 here to push the Hawks to the brink of elimination in the first round.
In fact, since winning four straight home playoff games in 2008 (3-0 vs. Boston) and 2009 (first game vs. Miami), the Hawks have gone only 5-4 at Philips. The breakdown: 2-1 in the rest of the Miami series, 0-2 vs. Cleveland, 3-1 vs. Milwaukee.
So what do you think. Can the Hawks make a series of this? We’ll be here blogging live during the game, but let’s hear your predictions now.

The can win. If they work the ball to Horford in the high post early and often. If they revert to that same old second half iso-Joe/iso Crawford. Forgetaboutit. Orlando has that game stopped.
For an “old school” coach, Woodson is a failure. Reverting to jumpshooting instead of ball movement. Time for new leadership; win, lose or draw.

Any adversity and they’ll go in the tank. The team has some great complementary pieces, but without leadership, a decent point guard, or a dominant center they have peaked.

To put things into perspective:
The second has not been kind to our beloved Hawks. In fact, you have to go back to 1997 since we have won a game in the second round. That was on the road, Game 2, in Chicago.
Here is the breakdown friends:
2010 – Orlando, Games 1 & 2 = Losses
2009 – Cleveland, 0 – 4
1999 – New York, 0 – 4
1997 – Chicago, 1 – 4
1996 – Orlando, 1 – 4
1994 – Indiana, 2 – 4…..We were the #1 seed.
That is as far back as I want to go without bringing up the heartbreaks of the late eighties.

This is a sad commentary but, a great # of fans ( myself included)
probably wish for a quick and painless elimination by Orl. so the
*process* can begin.
( Prediction – Magic in Four)
* New Coach, new direction, new outlook.
* No need to start over!
* Address flaws you mentioned.(center and point guard)

Jeff, I think the Hawks will go down in five. I think they will win tonight, lose Game Four, and be finished in Orlando in Game Five. Something tells me that a combination of the home crowd, and more frenzied play by the Hawks, will make a difference tonight, but, ultimately, the Magic will find a way to win Game Four, and then, there is no way the Hawks are winning a Game Five in Orlando.

“Sending JJ away will not help the Hawks.”
Completely UNTRUE! Every scoring funk the Hawks have gotten into this season starts with ISO-Joe missing shots. His defense has been average to poor. His high scoring average is due to the fact that so many plays are run for him. Joe Johnson is a fraudulent star that marketing and a dim witted coach have shoved down the Hawks fans throats. Don’t be fooled. The lack of development of this team from a maturity and cohesiveness stand point has to do with the presence of Joe Johnson.
I say this as a fan who was formally fooled, but has done the research and finally see what he really is. Perfumed garbage. A marketing trick

Actually, I think Marvin Williams would thrive (or be a really, really decent cog) in a system like Orlando’s and Phoenix’s. If I were Mike D’Antoni (yes, I know he’s with NY) and wanted a piece that would evoke memories of his Phoenix days, I’d go with Williams over J Johnson, who of course played for Mike in PHX, but has alot of mileage on the odometer.

To everyone that keeps saying the Hawks need a big man, that’s stating the obvious. To imply that it justifies the lackluster performance that this team has given in these playoffs is ridiculous. This is 10 playoff games in a row that we haven’t seen 48 minutes of work from these guys. Two people have to take responsibility for that: the one who calls the plays and the one who gets most of the plays called for him.

To all the Fire Woodson people: How is it Woodson’s fault that the Hawks are losing to a better team? My problem with this series, is that, so far, the Hawks aren’t even playing competetively. They are being blown away on offense, and smothered on defense.
Maybe we have to accept the fact that this Hawks team has maxed out. They dont have a Dwight Howard/Kobe/Shaq/Lebron superstar that can propel a team to a championship. They are a good team of quality players, that are one of the better teams in the NBA, but not an elite one.
Dominique was here for years. He was part of several very good teams that couldnt get past the second round. Larry Bird, Kareem, and Magic were the elite at the time. All of those guys won several championships. The Hawks seem to me to be like they were for the Dominique years of the 80s, a very good team that just wasnt elite, and couldnt get past a certain point.

I have defended him in the past, but Woodson is the problem. We don’t RUN an offense. Everything is based off of Joe or Jamal going one on one. We don’t get open looks because our offense is so easy to defend. The only easy buckets we get are off of the break or offensive rebounds. These playoffs have been beyond frustrating. Woodson has to go. I think we should bring back Joe because you know the ownership is not going to bring anyone in to make up for losing him. Bosh is not the answer when we already have Horford and Smith. Once again, we have seen that we have no bench besides Jamal and Zaza. Mo does not bring anything. We need to brink Childress back to be another weapon on the wing off the bench. Look at Orlando. They have Pietrus, Redick, J. Williams all contributing big minutes off the bench and we have Jamal.

Jeff you said it yourself- the Hawks cannot match up with the Magic- have less talent than the Magic- so they have to play for 4 quarters like their hair is on fire. Jeff–time to revisit my comment before the start of the game about heart.
Atlanta has good, athletic players but, deep down, they’re not made of championship stock.
There is obviously something fundamentally wrong (or, better yet, dysfunctional) happening in their locker room—Joe’s veiled comments from last week attest to this. It’s evident in their (lack of) effort over this series. Orlando is good but there’s something else going on.
I bet the truth will come out after the final nail is placed on the Hawks season Monday.

Schultz, I agree he has the talent to be a truly great player. He is easily top10 one of the best athletes in the league. But he is in what, his 5th or 6th yr in the league? He can’t shoot outside of 15 ft, has no real goto move on offense, and has no business trying to handle the ball. He is the backbone of the defense, but shouldn’t he further along offensively? Do you think he can still get better or near his peak?

After the season is over (soon), evaluate every player and coach on this team and determine if they can go higher in the playoffs with them. now, having a superstar doesn’t guarantee you anything… but if you have a superstar and a semi-competent GM, you are in great shape.
that’s why i have a lot of sympathy for Rick Sund… i think he’s a good GM in an impossible situation. he can’t get anyone in the lottery, and no player is gonna want to come to a city that has a 45+ year tradition of losing and a jaded (understandably jaded) fanbase.

Brian, good question. All the teams with top, elite players drafted them for the most part. It is easier to keep players you draft because you can offer them more money. Look at Kobe, Lebron, Duncan, Dwight, Wade, Nowitzki, and so on. All of the top, elite players have pretty much played for one team. It is very hard to sign a superstar in the prime of their career. Bosh, not matter what people say, is not a superstar. He has a decent supporting cast around him, but he cannot even get the Raptors into the playoffs.

It’s all about ownership – we’ve had 2 good owners in our history. Ted Turner and Arthur Blank. One gave us the Braves of the early 90’s, the other is giving us a very exciting Falcons team.

I think Johnson is trying his darnest not to get resigned with the Hawks because he has stunk thru this process. Williams and Bibby have stunk all year. Why they ever resigned them is way over my head.
They have Smith and Crawford and Horford. They need a new coach to control and make Josh grow up and be able to fire up a team. What a damn ugly sight this team is. If I were playing on the Hawks, I would hang my head very low. They really suck bad.

Four more months, you are counting Georgia Tech as the winner in Losersville? The Falcons will be good this year and they’ve had two winning seasons in a row coming into this year. They are building something and will be a playoff team this year.
Georgia Tech…not so much. Even most of you want to get rid of your hoops coach who is 30 games under .500 for his career in the ACC and has a losing record vs UGA. Your powerhouse football program has lost 8 of 9 to UGA. If anybody in Atlanta cared about Tech, wouldn’t you be able to fill up the Joke at Coke more often? You’d be the equivalent of South Carolina or Kentucky if your football team played in the SEC.

Detroit won it all a few years ago without a superstar. I think that is who we are modeled after. I really think we could have been competitive in this series with a different coach. Wait the falcons for what it’s worth fielded some good teams in spurts over the years. let’s see the early 80’s team. 2 or 3 in the 90’s and then the dirty birds of the late 90’s even into the early 00’s with the vick led teams. The braves as we all know were very competitive during the 90’s and the hawks fielded some good teams during the late 80, then again through the mid to late 90’s. We may not have the hardware but we have been competitive and relevant throughout the years. It’s just that when our teams are bad we have a tendency to be excruciatingly bad which makes our dead cycles seem even worse.

They’re losing this series for all the wrong reasons. Let’s be clear, Orlando is strong enough, and deep enough, and talented enough that when they play their game, you can do everything right, and still get beat by ten or twelve points. As we all know, the Hawks haven’t done everything right. Offensively they’ve been a mess, defensively they simply refuse to guard the perimeter. On both ends of the floor, they have performed at a level of execution that one might expect from a badly coached high school team.
Now, to be clear, Van Gundy had a week to prepare for Atlanta (I doubt he put much time into prepping for Milwaukee). By the time Tuesday rolled around they knew exactly what Atlanta wanted to do and had a pretty fair idea of how to take it away. Woodson had 48 hours. Now, putting the niceties aside, Woodson simply has not mentally prepared his team for this series. Woodson did not mentally prepare his team for the Milwaukee series which should have ended in no more than five games. There’s no denying what Bob Woodson has done with this team. He inherited a mess and he took them from a mess to a perinnial playoff team, but not a contender. Now, I’ve said many times that with the team on hand, I don’t know of many coaches that could have done as well as Woody has since 2004, and I only know of one or two that might have done better. At this point however, I have to say that even though Woody can get them to the show, he just can’t make them dance. Unfortunately, the NBA is all about how well a coach can make a team dance when it really matters.

My original “Orlando in five” prediction that I posted on Mark Bradley’s blog at the beginning of this series, was based on my feeling that the Hawks would win Game Three. They have lost Game Three, in humilating fashion. They have shown no reason to think they will not do the same, in Game Four.

When the players are lacking in effort, you need a coach who can light a fire under them. You don’t get rid of an entire team that underachieves but keep the coach. That makes no sense unless we’re talking about a Hall of Fame caliber coach…but that’s not the case here.

There is not argument here that the Hawks lack leadership. Their failure to find a coach who can implement and a true point guard who can orchestrate an offensive game plan has been their problem for years. Billy Knights draft failures when the Hawks were consistently making lottery picks will haunt them for years. JJ is a good player who is expected understandably to play a a level he really is not capable of playing at. He;s not a number 1 guy and no better than players like Rashard Lewis, Coron Butler etc…. JJ can be a good fit on a team that plays like a team. The Hawks are a bunch of athletes who have no offensive chemistry let alone flow. You have got to fault management and the coach for that. They are a tease at best but must get seasoned coach who can demand more of this team and management must get their act together, settle the lawsuit and move on so that this organization can reach its full potential. Yea, like that will happen…..

Another emotional jerk job of a season from the Hawks comes to the end. Fans threw in the towel after watching their team do the same. Why should the fans care when their team doesn’t?

If Mike Woodson leaves who do you get to coach these guys? Byron Scott is available, I don’t who else is a championship coach and will demand more out of his guys. Can anyone here on this blog? Do I think if we had D-Wade this series would be different? Heck Yeah. We wouldn’t be down 3-0 I Know that for a fact. A few months back I suggested (and still state) that Joe Johnson is not a SUPERSTAR as Charles Barkley has also stated. I was scolded on this blog for that. So after today does anyone out here think Joe is a SUPERSTAR. If so, where the heck was he today!!! Or the series for that matter?

First off,The Management is in shambles and that’s where it begins.Coach Woodson needs to be fired and he should have been fired atleast 2 years ago.The team has no respect for him to even try and earn their money………….Atlanta sports fans deserve better than this.Coach Woodson doesn’t seem to be concerned with anything except getting his paycheck.
I’m tired of seeing Josh whine his butt off all the time. The problem with Josh is that he’s under the misconception that he’s actually an elite player when he’s barely a C list player good for a dunk every now and then.
Joe Johnson has no damn heart and I knew that when little Mo Williams punked him last year during the playoffs……Joe Johnson also seem to think he’s elite and he is surely not remotely there.Joe Johnson showed by not signing a new contract that he wasn’t committed to The Hawks and I say he needs to GO!
My favorite player on the team Jamal Crawford because he is a hard worker !…I’m so happy for Josh Childress, his team in Greece is doing well !

The only players on this team worth keeping is J-Craw, Josh (yes I still believe in him), and Al. Bibby can’t guard anyone. Joe is always missing in the playoffs (for the most part-just do some research). What is up with Teague? Why is he not in there?

OK, obviously the Magic are better than the Hawks, but not THIS much better. Losing by this much just shows 2 glaring weaknesses: horrible coaching/leadership and no heart. Not only will they get swept, but I’ll bet it’s by over 20 pts in game 4.
So, what’s next?? I’m not so sure bringing in a superstar (BTW JJ is NOT a superstar, as he has just so aptly proven) will make the difference with this current roster. Besides, why WOULD a superstar want to come here to this group of quitters?
Sund needs to blow this team up. Start with Woody (nice guy, did a good job getting them to playoff caliber, barely, but he is definitely NOT championship level). In fact Sund may decide to axe him right on the floor immediately after the final horn on Monday. Now, with the ASG’s very limited, nearly bankrupt, budget they just might decide to keep him if only to save money – what a mistake that would be.
Next, JJ: they offered $15 mil and he turned it down (he’s making ~ $14.9 this year) thinking he can get more elsewhere. After his playoff performances, he make get NO offers. The Hawks should offer him $11 mil, (that would be fun to see) and then let him walk or do a sign and trade if they can find a desperate partner.
Whomever the hire as head coach, he needs to have job 1 be to get inside Josh Smith’s head and get him to give a professional effort.
Get rid of Bibby, whatever the cost, and either give Teague a chance to play or bring in a top PG (won’t be able to afford that so it looks like it will be Teague). BUT what this team needs most is NOT a big center like so many are crying for after watching Dwight Howard dominate…they need a great point guard (ghost of Billy Knight just won’t go away, eh?).
Now, if all of you fans are satisfied with just making the playoffs and getting embarrassed when it counts, then by all means plead for Sund to maintain status quo or just “tweak it”.

To those who monday night will be the end of the road for you as an Atlanta Hawk I wish you well on your journey.

We need to look at the big picture. I agree, next year, no Woodson, NO Johnson, No Bibby (buy out his year or trade him for a pic) Al Horford and J Smooth play the same position. Both have to play the four spot. Jsmooth is not a small forward, he doesnt have the handle or the jump shot. So package JSmooth and Keep Horford. Then hire a new coach, and quickly. Then build a team around Horford at the four.

Got a question for you Hawks fans. Why were fans at the arena booing Dwight Howard? He’s a home town guy. I think the energy would’ve been better used trying to cheer on your team. Oddly enough by halftime, the boos were redirected to your own team.
Now to the actual games. The problem with the Hawks is there’s just too much 1 on 1 and not enough team ball. Whether that’s the coaches offensive scheme or what the players do when things don’t go right, I don’t know. Unless they can figure out how to move the ball, the Hawks will always just be a decent team, not an elite & will never make noise in the playoffs.

The following statement is for Joe Johnson. Shut up and leave already. You are over-rated and over paid. The sooner you leave and take that idiot high school coach with you the better this team will be. Jamal Crawford is twice the player you are and I look forward to him starting in your spot next season while you suck in big games for whatever stupid playoff contender will have you. The fans boo at you because you and your Hawks teammates continue to be an annual disappointment. You had to fight to get by an under-manned Milwaukee team and then laid down against Orlando. The Hawks have looked like they didn’t even belong in the playoffs. Since jumping out to a 2-0 lead against Milwaukee you all are 1-6. Pitiful showing so go whine about the fans all you want to but the fact remains you have failed to show up in this series or the last four games against Milwaukee. Good Riddance to you!

So MC just posted a story with JJ saying that he “could care less” (incorrect use of the phrase, JJ) if fans show up for Game 4 because it’s only about the guys in his locker room. This is the perfect example of what’s wrong with this guy and so many athletes. The superstars never say that even it may be their true thoughts. JJ, do you realize that without FANS there is no need for anyone to pay you the Max Money you strongly desire??? Where is the leadership on this club?

Thanks Jeff for that article. You summed it up. I’ve been a big Hawks fan for years. I went to the game tonight. I definitely booed the team. There was no intensity, no effort. They obviously didn’t care. Joe’s words about not caring about the fans sound accurate. They’re getting their paycheck one way or another. I wish I hadn’t bought the tickets and I won’t be buying any more tickets for the forseeable future. I think I’m going to file a class action lawsuit to get a refund for the game. Fraud is the allegation. Because if this wasn’t fraud, what was it?

vick supporter, I totally disaggree with you young man. Fans will fill the stands every night if you put the right product on the court. To be honest with you, Al Horford and the Jamal Crawford are the only two players on that team I care to watch. Joe Johnson, Josh Smith and Marvin William are all low IQ basketball players and I could careless if they came back next season.
It’s about time for this organization to start bringing in high IQ basketball athletes and coaches who has been part of a championship organization. I prefer a coach who played on a championship team as a player(Avery Johnson or Byron Scott). We neen to draft smart atheletes(Paul George-SF, Gordon Haward-SFand Luke Babbitt-SF). NO MORE LOW IQ BASKETBALL PLAYER.

By the way, that silly comment Joe Johnson made about the fans will follow him whereever he goes. No fans around the league will put up with his nonchalant attitude.
Hawks fans time to send Joe a message

At least, if you still insist on going to the game since you spent your hard earned money, at least have the sense to boo Joe during the pregame introductions.
Cheer Al. Boo Joe. Send a message.

Dwayne Wade is not leaving Miami they can offer he more money than any other team can so he’ll be back with the heat. The Hawks can get Chris Bosh though I’m sure he would be welcome in Atlanta and he would like to play in Atlanta cause he is already familiar with the city since he played college basketball at Georgia Tech.

The hawks need to break the bank and bring in d-wade and bosh. With those 2, they should be a lot better next year.
