The drafting of Sean Weatherspoon is one of the moves by Thomas Dimitroff that will get the Falcons back in the playoffs. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)
FLOWERY BRANCH – Two years ago, we expected too little. One year ago, we expected too much. So it’s safe to conclude that even with all that Thomas Dimitroff and Mike Smith have accomplished during their brief reign with the Falcons, they’ve managed to keep at least one tradition in tact: The team is still keeping us guessing.
But not this time.
Last month, they signed a legitimate cornerback (Dunta Robinson). This allowed the Falcons to cut back on its janitorial stuff because now somebody won’t have to run onto the field to sweep up the ashes after every opponent’s pass play.
Then came the draft. They needed an outside linebacker who could drop into coverage, help create some mayhem on the pass rush and, if at all possible, hit somebody. They found Sean Weatherspoon. They needed linemen on both sides of the ball. They took a defensive tackle and two guards with their next three picks. Think of a draft as you would an exam. Nobody is guaranteeing an A. But at least we know the Falcons studied the right chapters for the test.
At the very least, they will make the playoffs. If body parts don’t spontaneously combust as a year ago, they are capable of doing something special.
If reading that leaves you cross-eyed, think of this: What were the expectations of the New Orleans Saints a year ago when they were coming off two non-playoff seasons and a record of 15-17? Super Bowl champions?
Dimitroff isn’t the type to make guarantees. The most he would allow Saturday was: “There’s no question people should have expectations. Very solid expectations. We feel we’re going in the direction of a team that will be a perennial playoff contender.”
They went 11-5 when everything right. They went 9-7 when so much went wrong. Think about that: nine wins in a bad year. And then consider this:
♦ The schedule will be significantly easier in 2010. The combined record of opponents (127-129) ranks 20th, compared to last year’s schedule (150-105-1), which ranked fourth. Also, three outdoor road games in cold-weather cities – Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Philadelphia – all take place by mid-October. No snow.
♦ Logic says the Falcons will have better fortune on the injury front. Last year wiped out the seasons of Peria Jerry, William Moore and Brian Williams early, and dented Michael Turner and Matt Ryan late.
♦ Look around the NFC: Philadelphia jettisoned Donovan McNabb and will be transitioning to an untested Kevin Kolb at quarterback. Arizona saw Kurt Warner retire, which means Matt Leinart just lost his safety net. The Eagles and Cardinals are two of last season’s six NFC playoff teams. The Dallas Cowboys’ schedule is ranked as the most difficult in the conference and No. 3 in the league (opponents’ record of 139-117). The Saints will still be good. But they open against Minnesota, play at Dallas on Thanksgiving and have four night games on their slate — “rewards” for being a marquee team.
The Falcons are not without questions. Sam Baker hasn’t proved he’s worthy of being a starting left tackle, let alone a first-round pick. Defensive end John Abraham has to stay healthy (and preferably visible). There is a significant drop-off at wide receiver from No. 1 (Roddy White) to whomever is No. 2 (Michael Jenkins, Harry Douglas, street free agent to be named later).
Also, there’s the Matt Ryan question: Were the bumps in Year 2 just normal signs of the NFL learning curve?
Dimitroff wouldn’t call 2009 a step back, saying only, “We learned a lot about a very young football team.”
Then he reiterated, “People should have expectations that the arrow is pointing up. It’s not static or sideways.”
High expectations seem safe this time.

I think we have a shot at the playoffs due to schedule. I will be disappointed if Spoon doesn’t crack the starting lineup immediately. Johnson is a solid pick. The others are typical TD draft choices – reaches (sometimes spanning rounds), passing on much higher rated players, unknowns from minor schools or free agent types that wouldn’t be drafted. It is pretty clear the TD feels he has to prove he can out think the room by drafting players no one else would at that position or at all. No way the safety or the center get drafted at all. No way. At least he stayed away from picks with a history of injury problems. Maybe he has learned his lesson with Baker, Jerry and Moore – that is two number ones and a two if you are counting. That is putting a helluva lot of money at a lot of risk, not to mention the effect on the team.
TD has done a great job with free agents, I think really great. His first draft was very good to exceptional depending on if Baker ever decides he can play. 2009 is a bust, and 2010 is probably a C unless all of these players are much better than they grade, and that assumes that Spoon is a player.
Disappointing really, I was hoping that 2009 was a aberration and 2008 was the norm, and I was looking for D to prove that with this draft, but I am afraid it is the other way around.

Yea…yea…Colin Peak is great, but we need a kicker.
Regarding Jon Dwyer, It is very hard to tell how good a power running back is going to be, because of the wear and tear that power backs go through in the NFL. Sometimes they only last three years.

Look, Schultzie is many enigmas rolled into one, but I will say this, he’s been the best Football guy this paper has had, EVER! He calls it right 90% of the time. If we only had him here during the Smith years of the 90’s.
Now to you idiots that bagging on this regime’s draft and overall mgmt. and saying Ryan was just “Luck” over Dorsey. ASIDE from Baker’s durability, he’s good, maybe not great, maybe not even a one, but a BUST – absolutely not. And what about that Loftin kid? Best hitter since Tuggle. Harry Douglas? if not for injury everyone was liking where the kid was going. Bierman in the 5th round, 5th ROUND! People it used to be our FIRST ROUND picks didn’t pan out after 3-4 years, PHULEEZE stop, just STOP with the bashing on these guys, it just shows how stupid our Falcons Fans really are.

Weatherspoon, Sean – LB: Solid pick
Peters, Corey – DT: I guess this pick was due to Babineaux (Drug Possession = Suspension) and
Peria Jerry coming off a knee injury; which usually takes time to heal. Also DE/DT JA98 will probably be gone in 1 to 2 years.
Meier, Kerry – WR: Not fast for a WR but has very good hands. Possible replacement for Finneran. We still don’t have a #2 WR.
Johnson, Mike – G: Picked for depth on the offensive line.
Hawley, Joe – C/G: Picked for versatility. Possible replacement for McClure.
Franks, Dominique – CB: Should have stayed in school for 1 more year.
Schillinger, Shann – S:I wish they got Myron Rolle (FSU, Rhode Scholar) but I guess Biermann spoke very highly of him.
Undrafted Free Agents (as of right now):
Colin Peek, TE, Alabama (At least he will learn from the best. I’m surprised that he was undrafted.)
Bear Woods, LB, Troy.(Is this Tiger Woods brother?..LOL )
Rafael Bush, DB, Sc. State.
Ryan Wolfe, WR, UNLV
Gabriel Derricks, CB/S, San Diego

John Abraham needs help – wouldve been good to find someone to compliment him on the other end??? Otherwise, these picks are ok…Believe me,ESPN and the NFL network would have talked themselves blue if these had been controversial or bad picks….They aren,t glamour or sexy picks…Linemen never are unless taken in the top 5.

For all you on the blog that reference the “Experts”. If they were so good, they would be an NFL GM by now. The last one I can remember making the transition was Matt Millen. He did not do so well with the Lions. So sit back and let TD do his job. In 2-4 years, if the drafts do not pan out then he can become an “Expert” on draft day!

I hate the safety pick because Dimitroff has already used two 2nd round picks on safeties. Either we were already set at that position or Dimitroff blew it last year. I’m tired of using picks for special teams players. HOW THE HELL DO YOU PASS UP ON DWYER FOR A SAFETY FROM MONTANA! Do the yankees up in Flowery Branch need to hire a local football coach to make sure they don’t whiff on the local kids like this? I hear O’Brien is sipping tea on his front porch up in Cherokee, he might do it for free. Stupid comments on Dwyer from the talking heads this weekend,”He let himself get too big” and “he didn’t show the ability to take it to the house”. I talked to a friend that saw Dwyer recently and said he was absolutely ripped. Its amazing what happens when you get off the Paul Johnson Told Me To Eat With The Linemen diet. Said he might not weigh 219 let alone 229. Did the scouts tape over his freshman year at Tech? Did anyone bother to look up his 100 meter times from the Georgia state track meet? 210 lb. kids very rarely run that fast. The thing that pisses me off the most is that the Steelers took him. No Roethlisberger= nonstop Greene/Dwyer. But don’t worry fans, if Norwood and Turner break down again we have Snelling. Who needs a back that can break a run longer than 10 yards.

Hey idiots. We NEED lineman. You do realize Harvey Dahl and Tyson Clabo are likely not going to be on the team next year don’t you? What happened when Dahl went down last season? Ojinnaka filled in. Yea that worked out well. What happened when Peria Jerry went down? No inside pass rush. If you want to win year in and year out you got to have the BIGS. Just look at the Steelers, Ravens, Colts, and Pats. Many of their drafts aren’t flashy because they are constantly drafting young lineman.

Archie- the falcons only have ONE legtimate weapon at running back??? REALLY!!!??? Last I checked they had 3 very good ones, If norwood werent so brittle, all 3 could be starting quality runningbacks on other NFL teams. Im assuming the ONE you are talking about is Pro-bowler Michael Turner, who rushed for 1,699 yards and 17 td’s two seasons ago. He’s MVP calibur and carrys this team on his back. Norwood is one of the most explosive runningbacks in the league, and has so many plays of over 30, 40 yards I cant remember them all. He is lightning fast, and can go the distance everytime he touches the ball. Sure he gets injured some, and running between the tackles is not his strength, but watch out for him in 2010..And finally, Snelling is a GREAT #3, and #2 runningback, he might not be a very good #1 option, but when Turner went down, he filled in admirably, and has a great combination of power and speed….Dude, we’ve definately got a great stable of runningbacks, no need to worry about them this year….maybe next year, add a nice young guy, and that would be even better….FALCONS DOMINATION!!!

The reason we did not draft a DE is because Dimitroff was only going to pick one if he could be an immediate impact player. By the time the Falcons picked at #19 Graham, Morgan, and Pierre-Paul were all off the board. Who else was there to draft that would be a significant improvement over Sidbury and Bierman?

draft better- how exactly did the falcons get burned with a Mizzou Safety last year?? Oh, you mean William Moore, the 2nd rounder, with good speed, great size, and amazing production, and team leader of the Mizzou defense. Had 11 interceptions as a junior, and just a “freak” athelete. Yes he suffered a terrible, unfortunate knee injury that sidelined him for the year, he has no injury history, but guys like draft better think he is a bust, despite one injury, and not having a chance to prove himself the stud he is. Just promise me this….When he and Spoon are playing lights out, and making some head jarring tackles please never post on here again….its amazing some peoples lack of the game of football and little to no insight….simply amazing…

Hey draft better- I saw every game Mike Johnson ever played. He is one of my favorite players of all time. I agree he will be a great Falcon. If I were pulling the trigger I would have taken Eric Norwood instead. Despite that fact that SC sucks Norwood was a nonstop highlight reel. Imagine the blitz packages with LB corps of Spoon, Lofton, and Norwood. At the very least, we could have taken Norwood instead of Hawley.
This is the problem with drafting purely on need. We reached this year for Hawley when there were a pile of centers in the draft last year. Would you rather have Andre Caldwell or Mike Johnson right now?

Kane is 100 percent correct, championship teams are built around great o-lines and d-lines, the guys in the trenches are the foundation, and what wins games. The 2 offensive lineman and Defensive tackle from Kentucky were excellent picks, and sure up some shaky spots on the interior line of the falcons. I especially love the Mike Johnson pick, G, from Alabama, he’s a Saban guy- incredibly smart, high football IQ, passion for the game, great athelete, doesnt make mistakes, knows assingments, strong and uses leverage great-GREAT PICK UP TD…

When I was watching last fall, I noticed that when the Falcons played a quality team, they got beat at the line on both sides of the ball. Looks like they’ve tried to address that. In 2 or 3 years, we’ll know if this works or not but at least they tried to fix their weak areas.

I found myself yelling at the TV at some points….then I had to think back at TD’s picks so far…yeah last years top 2 both got hurt, but that being what it is look at the production weve gotten from mid to late rounders. In the 3rd so far TD has picked H Douglas, C Jackson (who seems to be on the way out), T DeCoud, and C Owens. Sidbury was a 4th rounder. Bierman a 5th. Vance Walker a 7th round pick played very well last year. I do not like the safety pick in the 6th with Rolle still on the board…and I think we should have been a little more aggressive in pursueing some of the undrafted FA….esp B Lang DE Troy who is a local guy and J Williams WR Tulane. I was not happy with the kerry meier pick at first….Esp with Mitchell from S Fla still on the board, but after looking at him I think Mularkey will have a field day with this kid. I also like the Wolfe signing. After watching video of him, he reminds me a lot of Wes Welker. I only hope we get Tiffin or the guy from Ohio St. I am tired to getting kickers that used to be good.

Kane, I agree we need linemen. However your angst needs to be directed at left side of the line. Dahl and Clabo should be re-signed at all costs. We took Corey Peters 10 picks behind John Jerry. Jerry is left guard ready day 1 and for 10 years. Blalock looks absolutely clueless at times for the top wunderlick test of his draft. Clueless or lazy. You can have Baker as well. I’m not cutting the guy slack for playing hurt. If your on the field get the job done. If he can’t stay on the field we need to find another solution. He’s like a football JD Drew. Our 2nd and first 3rd round pick could have made John Jerry a reality. I hope Peters is the real deal and not just, “Oh crap, Babineaux is going to jail, draft another tackle!”

I agree Dimitroff has done a good job. I think his best hidden gem will eventually be Sidbury. I don’t like drafting William Middleton in the 5th round last year and see him wearing a Jaguars jersey. 5th round could have been a replacement for Ojinnaka.

DEZ Bryant was dropped in the Falcons lap but they chose a LB over a WR that is top 10 draft choice material. Opposite Roddy White he would have been rookie of the year. I repeat, Dez Bryant has never been in trouble with the law or been accused of immorality. He didn’t kiss up to the NCAA mafia …… and that was held against him. He is an Academic All American. Just saw the highlights from UNLV WR Ryan Wolfe, and man can this guy make some amazing catches…I am excited about him and Meier coming to camp with the falcons…we already have the top three locked with White, Jenkins, and Douglass (who I feel will have a breakout season in the slot, with as fast as he is, like Wes Welker type season). So I really want #4 and #5 to be Meier, who is a former qb from Kansas and has all the tools, with great hands, and runs great routes, and Wolfe, who is a record setting reciever from UNLV, who is just like Meier, a great route runner, enough speed, great hands, who makes amazing catches. I think Thomas Dimitroff hit a homerun with both of these guys as possession recievers for a team that needs this in their WR group. We already have the burners in White and Douglass (and Jenkins is faster than most people give him credit for, he runs like a 4.49 or something like that), now we have 2 Austin Collie type guys who can run great routes, and make amazing catches, and move the chains with Matt Ryan. I really hope the Falcons see what I see in these two, and they make the roster as the 4 and 5 Wrs….they would be set, they would have the speedy WRs, the big Wrs, the great hands Wrs, etc. that make up a solid group. If they have a 6 WR it comes down to Finn, Weems, and Begeron. I dont like any of them, but Weems can play good Special Teams, so he is a little ahead. I honestly hope they get a decent veteran to come in and battle these two…. a really good one, so that we have a lots of depth at WR… I know Ted Ginn is gone, but I would have really liked him to be #4, and have these two guys battle for #5, and the loser goes to the practice squad, although I would hate some other team to take either of these guys, but we want depth…. I am excited after seeing Meier and Wolfe highlights….Watch Meiers and Wolfe’s highlights on youtube…

Before you get all bummed out, remember this: Just because you haven’t heard of a person and know nothing about him doesn’t mean that he can’t play.

Not having a 2nd round pick did not give TD the options to move us or down in the 1st round and I think set the tone for the whole draft. On paper not good but we have to trust TD and his crew that they found some players. Looks like other teams did much better.

It is amazing how much more people on this blog know than TD and his staff.
TD is great at his job and I trust him. Falcons fans should be thankful we have him here instead of complaining, just look at past results. They want to say last years draft was no good. We had injuries to two of those picks and some small college guys were real contributors. Not every great player has a big name coming out of college. AKA Rice, Payton, McDaniels, and so many others. I am not saying any of these players will reach that level, but lets wait a couple of years and see what happens.

For all of you that are overjoyed with this draft and focusing on D and OL which I have stated many times on here we didn’t need. Here are the facts about our offense, We needed badly a good WR and RB in the 3rd round if not the first round.
Points PG – 13th at 22.7
Yards PG – 16th at 340.4
Pass Yards PG- 14th at 223.2
Rush Yards PG- 15th at 117.2
Yes ma need a couple of D players, but not two drafts worth (see above) we need Offense to stay on the field.
