Draft night (LIVE): Behind the scenes at Falcons’ HQ

event-information-logoFLOWERY BRANCH — I’ve arrived at Falcons’ Draft Central.

Actually, more like Falcons’ Draft South of Central. The media is on the first floor of the team’s offices. Arthur Blank, Thomas Dimitroff, Mike Smith and everybody who really matters in the front office is on the second floor. This affords the executive branch privacy during important matters such as NFL drafts and national security. I also have this theory that Dimitroff controls a trap door that will open directly above me, dropping a barbell on my head if I question one of his selections (because I’m also sure the room is bugged. Just remember: You’re not really paranoid if everybody’s out to get you).

Before getting into draft, here’s a little peak into where I am:

NFL teams have their "war room." We in the media have our "bunker." As you can see, it's a buzz of activity.

I stopped at Chick-fil-A on the way. Figured the Falcons would serve us Pizza. Little did I know they would actually cater the evening with, "Italian Marinated Grilled Chicken." And yes, I'll eat again.

This is the AJC's signal-caller for the draft, D-Led. There's a story behind the green jacket. He played in coach Mike Smith's annual golf tournament and was voted the winner of the Worst Swing Award. Strict rules mandated Ledbetter wear the jacket Thursday.

This is Reggie Roberts, the Falcons' vice president of football communications. By the time he gets finished with the news release, the Falcons will have drafted eight future Hall of Famers.

This is Reggie Roberts, the Falcons' vice president of football communications. By the time he gets finished with the news release, the Falcons will have drafted eight future Hall of Famers.

OK, back to my keyboard. The Falcons, barring trades, will have eight selections over three days: one in the first (19); two in the third (83, 98); one in the fourth (117); two in the fifth (149, 165) and two in the sixth (171, 189). The fact they don’t have a second-round pick has prompted speculation that Dimitroff may try to swing a deal to get into the round.

There are no new rumors regarding the Falcons, just re-cast versions of the old ones.  I still think it will be one of the five players we’ve discussed: center-guard Maurkice Pouncey, defensive end Brandon Graham, outside linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, wide receiver Demaryius Thomas and tight end Jermaine Gresham. I think it’s safe to say that, except for Gresham, whomever they draft will be ticketed for a starting job.

Oh, and I’m still not buying that Derrick Morgan will drop to 19th.

Nationally, the only new news is several outlets are reporting that the chances of the Pittsburgh Steelers dealing Ben Roethlisberger are close to dead.

That’s it for now. I’ll be back shortly.

I would still like to see the Falcons trade down a spot or 3 and pick up a 2nd rounder. The likely trade partner would be NE who i think has 3 2nd’s.

And that makes 3 for 3. If form holds, the fourth straight Big 12 player will come off the board now: OT Russell Okung of Oklahoma State to Washington. But Redskins are a bit of a wild card with rumors of a trade.

Doggoneit: Of the five players we’ve listed, I rank them like this: Sean Weatherspoon – Maurkice Pouncey – Brandon Graham – Demaryius Thomas – Jermaine Gresham. But honestly, you can make a case for those first three in any order.

WE had a franchise LT in our sights and let him get away. Ryan will continue to see his production decline each season going forward because he is playing behind a mediocre offensive line. NDW, I think the greater need for the Falcons was generating a pass rush. I don’t know much at Weatherspoon to know if he will help in that area or not, but with age a factor with Peterson and adding a younger player, hopefully this will work out. Only time will tell. Can anyone name me the starting OLB’s for the Super Bowl Champs? Probably not, because they were scrubs named Shanle and Fujita.

Champions are built on the offensive line, and we just whiffed on a chance to get better there. Instead, we wasted a pick on a totally unimportant position. Who do we have to beat in our division? The Saints. What good does Weatherspoon do against the Saints? A nickle LB? Really?

I loved the Spoon pick heading into draft day, but that was under the assumption that all of the OL were off the board. Then the miracle happened, Bulaga fell to 19th. And, we did not take him. I just don’t understand.

Hey Supes,

First of all, Eric Berry is the best player in the draft. 2nd, Jeff Backus is supposed to continue protecting Stafford’s backside next year. Guess what? Stafford will probably suffer another season-ending injury.

Detroit had a chance to draft Okung and took a defensive tackle. Defensive tackles are a dime a dozen. How many playoff games did the Vikings when before Favre got there? None, even though they had 2 of the 5 best DT’s in the NFL.

The NFL is a QB league, and the most important thing you can do is protect that QB with an Elite Left Tackle. It is the 2nd most important postion in the NFL.

Trade back? Draft an OL instead of an OLB? Draft Thomas or Bryant? In the long run, does it really matter at this point. I mean everything is speculative. We don’t know how any of these guys will pan out. If you do know how all of them will pan out, I want you to pick stocks and bonds for my portfolio.

In any case all I really care about is that the Falcons make the playoffs and make a run to Super Bowl. Who they draft is not really a big concern. It’s just a nice way to pass the time.

By the way, to the person who suggested the Falcons passed on drafting Calvin Johnson, how exactly did that happen? He was picked second overall by the Lions. Were the Falcons supposed to pull a Ditka and trade all of their picks to go up and get him?

Atlanta got a great OLB, and as much as Crabapple and NDW want to complain about not getting the lineman who is to say that Sam will get injured next year? You really have to feel bad for Broncos fans. It is almost as if Josh McDaniels is trying to destroy the entire organization. He takes a WR who cannot run routes or catch and QB who cannot throw. Add that to a RB last year who fumbles every 5 or 6 carries and trading the best player on the roster, it’s not a good time for the Mile-highers.

Sean Weatherspoon is an AMAZING pick for the falcons, I dont understand the hate on this board. Dimitroff has absolutely improved a rather sad defense from a year ago, by signing Dunta Robinson and Sean Weatherspoon, two amazing atheletes that will solidify our defense for years to come. Weatherspoon is fast, strong, and SUPER PRODUCTIVE. Having 410 tackles, 43.5 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks, 17 Pass breakups, and 4 Interceptions in a 4 year college career is pretty dang good, especially playing in an offensive dominated conference like the Big 12. Oh, and I forgot to add that he is a great guy on and off the field, Is hard working with tons of passion and drive for the game of football, and is a team leader. What is not to like about this guy?? Seriously haters tell me…We solidify our linebacking core with Weatherspoon taking over for Peterson, and we’ve got a core group of Spoon, Lofton, and Nicholas for the next 8-10 years…Thats pretty intimidating for oppossing offenses if you ask me. We can get O-line, WR, and DE help in the 3rd and 4th rounds, all those positions are deep in this draft…You have to take things like this into account…Just made our defense EVEN BETTER, A LOT BETTER…WITH A FREAK OLB…HIGH ENERGY, HIGH MOTOR, UNPARELLELED ATHELTICISM…..GREAT PICK TD!!!!!

@Larry…”a 6ft. linebacker with pedestrian speed”…you make yourself look really stupid when you say things like this. If you for some reason dont like a really athletic, really fast, strong, linebacker, who is a great guy, and team leader…say so, its your right as an american to make stupid comments. However, you look downright retarded when you dont even get your facts straight before posting. Weatherspoon is 6′1 and 3/4, a quarter inch shy of 6′2, not 6′. Also, you should know that a 6′1 3/4, 239 LB. outside linebacker is good size. And he is the second fastest linebacker in the draft, running a 4.68 40!!! That is more than “pedestrian”LMAO…There are lots of WRs that run in the 4.5’s and 4.6’s…Spoon has great timed speed, and his game speed is even better, he is all over the field…You fail at Life Larry, research you facts before posting on this board again…I repeat you fail at life…Oh, and just so you know, in case you want to say something about his strength next, he put up 34 reps of 225 lbs. Thats what lineman put up….YOU FAIL AT LIFE LARRY!!!

Not saying much about Joe Cox, but he did throw more touchdowns thanTebow last season. You know , THROW. What a QB is supposed to do. When a QB breaks a RB record like Hershels, well it proves he either has a death wish or he’s not that great a QB.

BigTime–Tebow didn’t consistently play against the kind of beasts he will every Sunday in the NFL.
These guys are bigger and faster and stronger. Tebow’s physical style of play does not lend itself to longevity at QB.

I think there are more pocket injuries because there are more pocket QB’s.
Mike Vick, with all his speed and elusiveness, managed to have season ending injuries.
Tebow’s style is to run over people. He will have to be pretty special to run through brick walls.

Nick,
Why don’t you trust Douglas? DTW and Crapapple, McDaniels is doing the same thing the Patriots have done all along. They pick who they want and who they think is going to help their team. Look at the GM for the Cheifs, where is from? The Patriots. He picked Jackson last year at #3 and he got Berry this year when many thought there were other needs. They pick teams not stars. That is why the Patriots were successful. They drafted guys to complement the team not be stars.

The Broncos are doing THE EXACT OPPOSITE of what the Patriots have done. Last year, the Broncos traded up to get Knowshon. This year, they traded picks to move UP and get a QB at 25.

The Pats always trade back and multiply picks. They also draft extensively on the offensive and defensive lines. Josh McDaniels is a joke, and the Broncos will be drafting in the top 10 next year.

You know why Witherspoon has all those numbers? It’s because their defense was bleeding yards the last 2 years to Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Nebraska. There were CLEARLY better options after guys that were top 15 projected picks fell, and we take yet another defensive player from Missouri. No thanks. I don’t care how good he is, I bet the Falcons finish in the lower half of the league in total defense and go no better than 8-8 this year.

My guess is we are looking for DE, but I hope we get somebody to plug Baker’s slot, and protect Ryan’s back.
