Tubby Smith has Minnesota pointed up, and this might be a good time for him to leave.
When Tubby Smith left Georgia after only two seasons in 1997, it was for his expected dream job at Kentucky. If he leaves Minnesota after only three, it’s probably to defrost. And possibly to come back to the South.
Smith, who has the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the NCAA tournament for the second straight season, reportedly is close to becoming the next coach at Auburn, according to CBSSports.com college writer Dennis Dodd.
The report — which follows days of media speculation that Smith could be headed to either Auburn or Oregon — makes a lot of sense. Auburn fired Jeff Lebo immediately following the SEC tournament, and wants to make a splash with this hire. The Tigers are moving into a new $90 million facility next season. They want to hire a proven coach, even if it means paying a significantly higher salary than they’ve paid for a basketball coach in the past.
Welcome to the new SEC, where basketball suddenly matters.
Smith’s return would be a great boost for the SEC. He would give Auburn immediate credibility and obviously create great story lines every time the Tigers play Georgia and Kentucky. For those who’ve never met Smith, he’s one of the nicest, classiest men you’re going to find, a welcome departure in a profession that is overrun with shady characters and self-promoters.
The guy can coach, too. Minnesota went 9-22 in 2006-07, the season before Smith got there. In the three years since, the Gophers have gone 20-13, 20-11 and 21-13 (going into today’s tournament game against Xavier).
(UPDATE: Minnesota just lost to Xavier, 65-54, in the first round of the West Regional. So we should know something fairly soon about Smith’s future.)
(UPDATE II: Smith issued this denial after the game: “Obviously, that’s just talk. I’m very pleased with what we’ve accomplished [at Minnesota]. I’m pleased with where we are in the program. I’m looking forward to coming back to Minnesota.”)
They reached the final of the Big Ten tournament championship game before losing to Ohio State (after upsetting the Buckeyes earlier this season). He has recorded 17 straight 20-plus win seasons in his career, going to the NCAA tournament in 16 of those (nine times to at least the Sweet 16, one championship).
Smith probably knows this is as good as it’s going to get at Minnesota, and it would be a good time to exit. Unless he just really enjoys living in Minneapolis. On that note, tonight’s March 19 forecast: 25 degrees with possible flurries.

@Yellow Fuzz, nice stats, too bad it doesn’t translate to wins in competition against UGA in most instances. Let’s see, your top 25 football team LOST to UGA. Your “sweet 16″ basketball team LOST to UGA. At least you got us back in baseball this year I guess, so the year isn’t a TOTAL loss for you guys at the NATS.

Dear Jeff Shultz,
1. A real journalist provides real sources whenever they write a news article. At least that’s what I was taught. Dennis Dodd’s “blog” does not count.
2. Did you talk with Tubby Smith at all? Because judging by reading this article you didn’t.
3. Before bashing the great state of Minnesota, maybe you should move there. Get to understand the culture, the people, and yes the weather before producing such slander. That’’s what real journalists do.
Thank you for your time.

I suppose I should post my full resume’ and credentials here, seeing as I have as much chance of coaching Auburn next year as Tubby does. Aren’t you people old enough to realize that wishing something was true isn’t the same thing as having it actually happen?

UGA should move heaven and earth to re-sign Smith. It’s the smart thing to do.

Yellow Fuzz hits the nail on the head with actual numbers showing how dominant Tech is over UGA.
I’m glad he didn’t add player arrest records, or UGA would have moved up a lot!

Elisa,
4:46 AM says a lot.
Only a three day crack binge could make you think Trek is dominant over UGA.

I’m glad they didn’t include convicted student members of Al Qaida or Trek would be #1.

If Tubby is long in the tooth, as mentioned above, Al Groh’s teeth must be 3 feet long.
Recruits love the energy that a guy who stunt doubled on the movie Cocoon brings to the field.

I always thought Tubby should have never left UGA. Georgia was ready to name the basketball court after him. The fans loved him! No way he goes to Tech …He has too much class

Would someone please remove this article from the AJC and have Jeff write something new already. Jeez it must be slow times right now.

Jeff,
Are you and Bradley in a contest to see who is the most lazy writer at the AJC? Is you article quota down to one a month? This time of year you should have something new everyday.

I like Tubby, but I still wonder why he recommended Ron Jirsa to be his successor when he left UGA.
