Everybody needs to just back off Tim Tebow

224608_Senior_Bowl_Football Tim Tebow will go down as one of the greatest college football players in history (as hard as that is for some Georgia fans to stomach).

It also possible he will go down with other great college players, including Heisman Trophy winners, who weren’t good enough to play in the NFL. Archie Griffin, Johnny Rogers, Andre Ware, Danny Wuerffel, almost every other quarterback who played at Florida and even your David Greene all come to mind.

But for some reason, Tebow is being treated differently right now.

I’ve never seen a college athlete so ridiculously dissected and debated daily. I’ve never seen a college athlete – who by the way exemplified everything we want a college athlete to be – seemingly have so many people (mostly rival SEC fans) pulling against him. Is there some motivation to root against a player’s desire to make a living?

Look, I get the whole 24/7 media feeding frenzy thing. I’m part of it. But what this guy is being subjected to right now doesn’t seem quite right. And folks, I don’t have a dog in this hunt. Didn’t go to school anywhere around here.

I suppose Tebow set himself up for this. He didn’t have to go to the Senior Bowl. He could’ve done private, low-key workouts for teams back in Gainesville and not been subjected to all of this public criticism. But doesn’t that say something that he knew this might be coming and he didn’t care?

Tebow was torched by the media and draft scouts after his first day of Senior Bowl workouts. It was so bad that his agent, Jimmy Sexton, must have felt compelled to protect his client’s interests and come up with an excuse. He said Tebow had been “hospitalized” with strep throat and had a “103 temperature.” But that didn’t seem to be bothering the player in interviews.

I don’t know if Tebow will make it in the NFL. Even with the intangibles, his skill set might not translate. But what’s the motivation in rooting against him?

It’s envy, Jeff. Plain n simple. Folks love to root against someone who gets a lot of attention and isn’t on their team.

I’m a Georgia guy – Class of 99 – and I hope for Tebow to have marvelous success at the next level. What difference does it make to me? None. From what we all know, he is everything we all want in a son and citizen. I hope he is great in the NFL because it’s his dream. He can’t hurt my Dawgs anymore, so I will hope he does well just like I do for Peyton Manning.

We shouldn’t forget his age, he is far from a grizzled vet, give the kid a chance! Folks seem to rejoice for some reason when people that try their best to be their best have apparent flaws exposed – just who does that reflect poorly on?

He’s a nice kid, does everything the best he can, trying to make a living, make a difference. Let him try, folks!!

I am a Ga. fan, but lets keep this life thing in perspective, please! Just a kid, from all reports I have seen a good kid that tries to make those around him better as well.

A tip of the hat to Rob, a mature Georgia alum and fan. Maybe some others will find
out it cost nothing to be considerate. You will never build yourself or you team up by trying to tear someone or some team down.

I think it has everything to do with the overexposure. I can’t think of a single good reason to not like the guy, but I don’t. I guess if nothing else I root for him to fail just so that I can see highlights from the Australian open or college hoops rather than daily Tebow updates. I imagine that once all this ridiculous coverage fades away I will really appreciate the kind of person and player Tebow is, but as of right now, I’m just sick of the guy.

Being a Dawg fan, I can’t have too much sympathy for Tebow and as you said Jeff, he did bring this on himself by going to the Senior Bowl. It looks especially bad when his agent tries to cover for him. Good guy though. I do wish he was a little bit more of a jerk. It would make it easier to dislike him.

“I’ve never seen a college athlete – who by the way exemplified everything we want a college athlete to be – seemingly have so many people (mostly rival SEC fans) pulling against him.”

Sports fans say they want to see good role models, but they really want athletes to shut up and play ball. And that’s sad.

I’m a Dawg fan and I wish Tebow the very best. It is utterly ridiculous that he is being scrutinized to the extent that he is. He is another college football player trying to take the next step in his life. We could stand to have a lot more Tim Tebow’s in this world and in professional sports. He is a fantastic public role model and beats the heck out of the other miscreants that score big paydays on athletic ability as opposed to character and intelligence. Does Tim have 3 kids by 3 different women like some of the other prospects? Maybe Tim doesn’t make the NFL cut but he doesn’t need to be lambasted for it before it even happens.

Good Luck Tim in all of your future endeavours. You deserve what you get!

He’s a gator, and maybe he comes off as the nicest guy that ever lived but I remember when UGA was recruiting him and he said the DAWG walk was the funniest thing he’d ever seen. He didn’t mind running up the score on teams and I still remember the picture of him giving CMR a “‘how to you like that coach look” as CMR was leaving the field after the gators won. Well said Jeff! I am a alum of UGA and love rooting against the Gators whenever possible. However, I too have been puzzled why so many people root against this kid. He is exactly what any of us would love to see in our sons and/or daughters as young adults and athletes. He is a GREAT role model to younger kids who follow sports (regardless of the religion) and a fansatic leader who truly leads by example in his attitude, character, and work ethic. I think many people lump him and Urban Meyer together, but don’t understand that he is his own person and he is now on his own. While Urban Meyer may had been his coach and a mentor, it doesn’t mean that we should root against him the way many root against Meyer (which is another topic entirely).

I say good luck to the kid because sports could use a lot more of Tim Tebows and less of these gun carrying, selfish, and classless athletes we are seeing today in all leagues.

The hatred not only comes from his dominance of the sport, but his image. He comes off as the second-coming of Christ, and its too hard to believe its that genuine, especially when his best friend, Urban, is anything but a role model. The rumors of his upcoming Super Bowl commercial with its moral/political themes only makes him more annoying. Stick to sports, and keep your mouth shut.

But when he played for Florida, I didn’t like Tebow because he was a Gator and because he kicked our (UGA) butts. The organization that is sponsering Tebow’s Ad is one of the most right-wing political organizations in America. They were the largest contributor in America to anti-gay rights organizations. In California they contributed more money againt (Prop 8 it think that established legal rights for Gay/Lesb) than any organization including the Morman church. They are a modern day Moral Majority.

Anyway, let me get this straight. This guy attends a Public University, wears Biblical Passages in his eye shadow (Sorry for the term), is getting ready to maybe be drafted but in the proceess takes a politial position of National TV during the Superbowl against Abortion and againt legal rights for Gays and Lesbians?

Am I correct here? Tebow is not a Moron, Moran, Maroon or whatever but someone needs to teach the guy to keep his views on religion and divisive politics personal and stay away from issues that create distrust and hate if he want to be taken seriously as a professional athlete in the NFL.

I find the guy extremely offensive and I am neither Pro/Anti abortion or gay/lesbian. I just don’t like people sticking their personal views in my face during a public entertainment event or at any other time. I find it EXTREMELY offensive.

I will debate these issues at the right time.. I have worked on political campaigns for over 30 years.. There is a time a place for everything.. Tebow, as an individual, has a perfect right to his opinion. However, some Moron/Moran/Moroon needs to tell Tebow the he is a public figure (by choice or not) to many from different backgrounds, religions, sexes and political views. Their/There/They’re/They are doing him a terrible deed by not doing so.

The young man is being used by intolerant selfish, politically driven munipulators.

I think Tebow is a good player and an even better person however I think the constant 24hr media attention of Tebow has caused the backlash against him. Every time you turn on the TV its Tebow this, Tebow that, Tebow, Tebow, Tebow!!!! Its like the episode of the Brady Bunch where Jan got sick of hearing about how great Marsha was 24/7.

It has a lot to do with the fact the we have spent the last 4 years listening to announcers and different media folks cramming down our throats how absolutely wonderful he is. Not to mention, unless you’re a Gator fan, the kid has probably whipped your team on more than one occasion. I can’t certainly attest to that. It’s human nature. For so many of us he has been the enemy for 4 years. I understand he is a good kid and does wonderful things in his personal life. I’m just sick of hearing about how great he is. I don’t think people have a problem with Tebow, they have a problem with the way the media deifies one of the better college players of the decade. He was outstanding, but the offense dipped significantly the first time he was asked to be the best player on his offense.

He just doesn’t have the mechanics to be an every down NFL quarterback. There’s nothing wrong with that. He has heart, he has an iron will, he’s a freakish athlete, he’s just not an NFL QB.

Not keeping your religious views to yourself is a guarantee of the Constitution. I wish the guy good luck in whatever he undertakes. From what I have read, it is the coaches, scouts, and media that is ripping him. Why would opposing fans pull against him now. Makes no sence. He is not a great pure quarterback and that is not news. Irban Myer is a great coach and he was surrounded with the best talent in the world. He is a leader, very smart and a great person but the NFL doesn’t need that as much as they need the 15 to 20 yard down and out against the blitz. He just doesn’t possess the arm strength or quick release. Much ado about nothing, the scouts have been saying all of this for 4 years now.

Tebow will be asking for 1st – 2nd round money to be a quarterback. He’s not worth that. Florida has a huge recruiting advantage over everyone – just schedule a January visit to anywhere vs. Florida.

Tebow will be great in the NFL only if his team gets at least 50% of the best players, plays exclusively from a shotgun, and keeps the passes down to 10 yards or less and lets the reciever rake in the YACs.

Not gonna happen.

ok I mentioned this in one of the ESPN blogs yesterday in regards to America’s way of thinking.

Another UF quarterback, Jesse Palmer, goes on “The Bachelor” after his college career and professes his undying love to the final 3 women in hopes of getting all 3 to spend the night with him in a hotel room and succeeds. (where are any of them today?) America thinks that is just fine, slaps him on the back, and off Jesse goes to an ESPN career.

Tim Tebow thinks and lives another way. I, for one, thought the fact that he chose to stay in school another year was refreshing enough despite his beliefs. But Tim chooses to live his life above board and gets the finger pointed at him for doing so.

Jeff – as far as rival SEC fans hating Tebow is concerned (and many of them do) that’s just the way some people are with their Manichean view of the world. There is nothing anyone can say to them that will change their minds about Tebow.

I think more interesting is the reaction of the “professionals” – the scouts, “draft experts”, etc. Many of these guys, having dissected Tebow’s mechanics, skills, etc, seem to want him to fail in order to validate their own opinions. Misevaluation is nothing new. This same group (or their predecessors) spent all of Dan Marino’s senior year looking for things he couldn’t do with the result that he was the 6th QB taken – behind 2 hall of famers, of course, but Eason, Blackledge and O’Brien??

I still say Teblow is the modern version of another former Gator QB/RB and former Falcon, Harmon Wages. Although Saint Timothy does seem to be a better QB than Harmon was, he still isn’t a bona fide NFL QB, but he may be the next upgrade to the “Wildcat” offense. He can also be used as a short yardage back and third down back field blocker.

Harmon Wages had a good NFL career until all of that “clean living” caught up with him. Charmin’ Harmon loved the ladies and the night life. He certainly was an interesting fellow……

Truthfully I understand people feeling as Tebow was pushed down their throats, but it’s not the kids fault. He lived his life as he thought was best to the best of his ability. I agree with Buck Belue on 680; he doesn’t have a great arm, hasn’t been in the best offense, etc. But he also said that he’s been a success at every level and he wouldn’t bet against him either.

Hated Peyton Manning while he was at UT. Love watching him as a Pro. Hated Tebow at UF, hope he exceeds expectations as a pro.

It is not the player, it is the school. I cannot pull for a Gator, while he is fighting against my beloved Dogs, but once the UF jersey is traded in who really cares!

David Pollack was a DGD, but really was it the same pulling for him when he was in that Bengals jersey? Not for me it wasn’t!

Tebow is a great football player and a role model. I’m not pulling against him but I would like him better if he would keep his religious beliefs to himself. The bible verses and his up coming Superbowl commercial get on my nerves. Crying after losing a football game doesn’t help his cause either. I think he is making a big mistake involving himself in the controversial abortion issue. That will cost him some fans but he probably doesn’t care anyway.

Hey Schiltzy,
I don’t understand your pretense hear, Tebow is undeniably ones of the greatest college football players, but his fundamentals do not translate well as a NFL quarterback. I don’t see the NFL scouts or reporters treating him any different than other high profile athletes. He has the intangibles,ie passion, leadership, wins, etc, but the NFL scouts are not focused on those, but the fundamentals! Conversely, Stafford last year had the prototypical NFL fundamentals, quick release, cannon of an arm, pro style system, et, but they attacked his desire, character, leadership, et al…

So I dont see the press or NFL scouts treating Tebow any different than Stafford last year, but rather their percieved weaknessess.

I amy not agree with Tebow, but he certainly has the right to speak his mind. I don’t begrudge Tebow that someone is willing to pay to have a commercial run on the Super Bowl wherein he expresses his political/religous views. Unfortunately many people don’t want to hear anything they don’t agree with. Frankly I think it’s more interesting to hear someone say something I don’t agree with than something I do agree with. Hopefully it will make me consider the merits of my viewpont, whether I agree with him or not.

It seems that fact is being mistaken for hate. Just like when Heath Shuler came out and picked with the 3rd pick in 1st round, he was a bust and I stated as much before he was drafted (honestly). Shuler was the product of a prolific SEC offense at Tenn, holding many team records by the time he left school. Tebow, is another from a similar mold. In all his years at Florida he has not shown scouts that he can line up in a pro-set offense (we heard a lot last year that he would be doing so in his Senior year). So your comment that he didn’t need to go to the Senior Bowl seems awkward, in that, he needs to show scouts something other than line up in the Shotgun and Run for touchdowns.

I’m a UGA fan, yes, but that has nothing to do with my view of him as a player. Percy Harvin is a Gator but in the NFL he’s a Viking. I rooted for him to do good this season because his college career is over and have no reason to root against him.

Jeff, the problem is our contry is full of ideologues and abortion is a polarizing subject. I think CBS should do what they want and if people don’t like the commercial then don’t watch it. Maybe CBS should tell people when the commercial will air and then you can turn it if you choose to do so. I am not by any means a Flordia fan nor a Tebow fan. However, he will go down as the greatest leader to ever play college football and will be be given a solid chance in the NFL rather it be a QB or tight end. Tebow has earned that privilege.

I’m not saying he cant improve and find success in the NFL, I’m just saying he has a long way to go. Unless NFL teams start winning super bowls running zone reads and jump passes, he is going to have to totally reinvent himself as a QB.

That being said, I would trade Ryan for him in a heartbeat. Noodle Arm is the most overrated NFL QB ever. Dude throws a pick on any attempt over 10 yards. His only success is on handoffs and short completions, and my great granny can hit the tight end on an 8 yard crossing route.

How about this Tebow, instead of pushing your anti-abortion agenda on a commercial on TV with a 2.5 million dollar superbowl ad, how about you convince the company to use that 2.5 million and donate it to a cause that could actually use it and not just give it to a cable station. Hmmm maybe HAITI could use that 2.5 million in aid? Course not, it’s way more important to put your agenda on anti-abortion out in the public forefront. I guess not only do I not get the rooting against Tebow succeeding, but I don’t get the criticism of his abilities. I think the criticism of the offense he played in is silly. Urban Meyer had a QB taken #1 overall a few years ago from Utah, Alex Smith. And while Smith has not been a great success in the NFL, at the time no one seemed to care what offense he played in college. Plus, I don’t think you can compare the competition that Tebow played against with what Alex Smith dealt with at Utah, nor can you compare the accomplishments of Alex Smith to Tim Tebow.

To me, its a learning curve. Just get Tebow in the league and let him see some action and he’ll learn and adapt to the speed of the NFL game. You see this nonsense all the time in the draft…projected potential is often preferred to proven ability and accomplishment, but more times than not those proven ability kids (who dropped into the 2nd or 3rd rounds) are who become successful building blocks of good teams, while those top ten picks chosen on potential become busts. Look no further than the Falcons pick of Jamal Anderson from Arkansas. The kid was raw, and had only played DE a couple of seasons in college, but was drafted because of his measurables and how he looked getting off the bus. But a guy like Kroy Biermann is barely on the radar of most teams, but is leaps and bounds better at pass rushing, despite not looking the part.

Tim Tebow has all he needs to win in the NFL…God given ability, work ethic, passion, leadership. Just shut up and let him play. His running ability will allow him to succeed while he learns the NFL game, and once he gets some experience and adapts, he can run less, just like Donovan McNabb.

As a dual threat qb I just couldn’t see him being in the same league as someone like a Pat White who was a threat to take it the distance from 80 yds while Tebow was only a threat to take it the distance from 5-10 yds or so.

That being said I still thought he was an exemplary young man who literally practices what he preaches and will undoubtedly go down as one of the alltime greatest college players. Wasn’t his fault he was so over exposed.

And in the same vein that I thought he was over hyped and overrated I also think that the piling on now is a bit much to say the least. Experts knew a couple years ago he wasn’t a great pro prospect. Its just that only now are the masses starting to realize this, the media senses it, and there’s nothing like when the media decides to pile on.

They built him up and now they’re tearing him down. Its sad and unfortunate. But hopefully most people will be level headed enough to realize that he never was a great pro prospect to begin with but that that will never diminish his accomplishments as a college player nor his outstanding character.

Do you have any links to back up this supposed backlash against Tim Tebow? Nobody I’ve seen, outside of a few left-wingers who predictably reacted to his anti-abortion commercial, have been outright criticizing his character. The only sports-related criticisms I see of him are the same ones that NFL draft experts have been repeating for a while now. Where is this mass of people pulling for him to fail? Everywhere I look he seems to be well-liked by most football fans. Other than Gator fans, conservative Christians, and pro-choice activists, I don’t think most people care one way or the other whether he succeeds or fails in the NFL. I sure don’t.

The kid is a fraud and a punk. His taunting in victory (see last year’s NC game vs. Oklahoma) and tears when he loses a game (Ole Miss ‘08, SECCG vs. Bama) is not “heart”, it’s poor sportmanship — and a bad example for kids. When you lose, you are supposed to take it like a winner by setting your jaw, congratulating the other team and moving on…. Tebow is no better than those 12-year old spoiled brat little leaguers who cry and throw fits when they lose en route to the LLWS. Had Tebow shown more class in victory and defeat, I would agree about him…but he didn’t. He’s won a lot of games, including four vs. my Volunteers, but the Tebow “myth” was built by fans, the media, his coach and himself. Even in interviews, he gets carried away by mentioning all the good deeds he has done, how real “pressure” isn’t on the field, but while helping those less fortunate in Third World nations. In my book, when you blow your own horn, the deed becomes null and void. Ephesians 2:8-9, since he loves advertising bible verses, says…”8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast.” I would not make such judgments, but I am sick to death hearing so many people claim that this kid is perfect. If he were perfect, he wouldn’t cry when he loses, taunt when he wins or toot his own horn when he does good deeds. The kid was a good college football player. No doubt, but he’s not any role model.

I’m not saying he cant improve and find success in the NFL, I’m just saying he has a long way to go. Unless NFL teams start winning super bowls running zone reads and jump passes, he is going to have to totally reinvent himself as a QB.

“Dude already has 25 PICKS” in less than 2 FULL seasons, 25 PICKS in 29 games.

He couldn’t win a playoff game even if the other team didn’t show up :)

Interesting perspective. I’ve heard the same from any number of fans that Tebow always seems to be tooting his own horn, always mentioning his good deeds, always drawing attention to himself in some fashion or form. Always playing the drama card like with the Ole Miss after game speech last year. So much for humility and grace. Pretty simple and it’s already been well stated here by “Tebow is being used” 10:46. Tebow flaunts his beliefs during sporting events – a huge turnoff to many fans. I watch sports because I love them and for me it’s great entertainment. But I hate and I do mean hate, to be preached to during these events. It sports not a political or religious event. He’s free to believe what he wants just don’t preach to me from a sports pulpit.

And that in a nutshell is why people are hating on Tebow. Not for his beliefs but for his arrogance to push them in our face during sporting events.

The media hypes Tebow because guys of his caliber are a rarity these days. And it’s refreshing to see a positive role model for a change instead of the usual scandal of some celebrity. As for you haters of Christ and His followers, this is our country too and we aren’t going to hide what we are. Tebow isn’t ramming anything down anyone’s throat. Deal with it or go live somewhere like North Korea. Our ancestors died for our freedom to openly express our convictions. Minorities are offended by this sexual choice being equated to our plight. Bottom line seems to be the same- when people take a stand for a cause like prolife, anti sodomy, or Christianity the “mikes” hate it. Take a look at america right now and see where we are and are headed-it is getting gloriously darker. You people do not care what is truly best but rather u r interested in marketing, pr, sound bytes, and what oprah thinks. Yes, I am a Dawg fan. But regardless of my thoughts of Florida, I think Tebow is a fraud. I think anyone would look good if not great when a gimicky offense is built around the quarterback. Tebow spent half his college career having to take up the slack in their running game because UF didn’t have any backs (Harvin…a receiver…took up the rest).

An NFL team won’t build an offense to make Tebow look good…not like Meyer did. That went out with Vick. Plus, there a slew of defensive men that will be looking to bury him under any given yard line. I have two words for Tebow…Danny Wuerffel. Anyone remember his 1st NFL start as a Saint? Wuerffel’s hype came crashing down that day…and Tebow is in for a rude awakening.

There are some of us Jeff, who’ve seen a lot in this Wide, Wide World of Sports who believe Tim Tebow is just about the biggest phony out there.

As phony as bologna.

And yeah, I never Danny Awful as much as I loath Tim Tebow.

And yeah, the media has everything to do with that.

But mostly, I deplore hypocrites.

If he truly is the Christian he proclaims to the world, why is every charitable act done in the limelight, with the ESPN cameras recording every circumcision or every time he reads bedtime stories to murderers and rapists?

In the New Testament, it says we are to do charitable works not for our own edification, but for the Lord and the people who need the charity. We are to take nor claim any credit, and we are to be humble in our charity.

Whether through the designs of his lime-light seeking father or the Florida PR department, Tebow allows himself to be used, either through tacit approval through his own inaction or through his active participation, in a way that brings to him much fame and celebrity for his charitable works.

And that, Jeff, his hypocrisy.

Where are the ESPN cameras when Mark Richt takes half of his team to Central America to build schools?

Tim Tebow may do many works, but either because of his dad, the Florida PR department, or himself, he does these works and gains notoriety and edification for them.

That is NOT the Christian way.

That’s why I cannot stand phonies.

Heck, everybody hates the Gators, even those of us that didn’t go to SEC schools (my father went there, but Florida State was a women’s college then, so he didn’t have much choice so we forgave him for that), but I agree with most of you – Tebow is a nice young man and he has done a lot for his team and his school’s reputation on the field. His real problem is his celebrity, something he’s been actively seeking since he played pee wee football in middle school. It would serve him well to remember what Kris Kristofferson said about becoming famous then whining about it: “…it’s like choosing to be a prizefighter, then complaining about getting beat up all the time….” Tebow didn’t play football because he needed an extracurricular activity in college to beef up his resume or to fill a physical education requirement. He did it because he had a talent for it, has always wanted to play in the NFL and UF gave him a full scholarship to go to college because of his talent. Most young men playing high school and college football dream of being all stars and getting into the NFL, and Tebow is no exception. Whether he likes it or not, he’s famous now, and he’s going to have to deal with the consequences of fame and there are consequences, especially if you’re not careful. Just ask Tiger Woods.

Yes he may have been a better college player than Stafford was but at least Stafford cashed it all in at the end and became the #1 pick. If he wants to make a living he should go be a Priest. I’m glad we this Tebow non-sense behind us now and we can move on. Tebow you may go into exile now…. All that hype gets you no where in the NFL. Ask yourself Tebow… “Is it in you?” like your famous Gatorade. I’m sure he will end up just like another Ryan Leaf. It pays off in the end to play in a pro style offense.

Ecs – I’m not offended by any of his messages…I just don’t feel he should be praised for any of it. It’s a game called football, not a seminary or abortion rights outfit.

If his teammate was an abortion supporter, and maybe his mother would have died in child birth, if not for an abortion before he was even conceived, and he did a commercial about it, should that teammate garner praise for his position?

What if another teammate was a devout athiest and consistently put “there is no God” under his eyes, should he be praised?

I think we both can agree, if you are a christian who likes public displays of your faith, you like his message. If you are not….or don’t like public displays of your faith….you don’t like his messages.

John 15:18-19 ( ISVNT ) 18“If the world hates you, you should realize that it hated me before you. 19If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own. But because you do not belong to the world and I have chosen you out of it, the world hates you.

I rooted against Tebow because I hate the Florida Gators, it’s just that simple. Other than that I have nothing against him personally. He seems to be a fine young man. I think he is, however, overrated and gets far too much media hype. In my opinion, Tebow is a good football player that operated in a system suited to his skill set that made him seem great. Much like Alex Smith when Urban Meyer was in Utah. In order to be considered great, you should be able to look at a player and say, with some measure of confidence, that he would be able to produce at a high level no matter what system he plays in, and that’s just not Tebow.

All the media drama is just going to make his eventual fall from grace even more dramatic. If he gets arrested in a few years for beating up a hooker or hiding pigeons in his butt or snorting coke off the back of a potbellied pig or some other ridiculous thing, everyone will flip out. If nearly any other NFL athlete did that, it would barely make headlines.

Except for the pigeon thing. That would be kind of impressive.

I know the answer! If you filled lets say the Georgia Dome with all of Tim’s haters what colors and team hats would we see? Georgia for sure. Tennessee who was 0-4 against the Gators since Tim was on the team. Ohio State the team he scored 2 touchdowns against in the 06 title game. Oklahoma lost to his team in the title game. All other SEC East teams fans would be there. Maybe some Cincinatti Bearcats and some Florida State faithful too. Anyway the point is everybody hates who is on top unless you are a fan of that team. Tim is a role model for young kids and he is extremely religious so people attack him because of that. Beating UGA the past two years a total score of 90-27 doesn’t help his popularity or his teams. Tebow is one of the greatest college football players to ever play regardless of what he does in the pros and he contributed to the 06′ title and was the starter for the 08′ title team and people can’t stand it. Him and his teams success is also a huge reason the Gators have such an unbelievable recruiting class coming in.

Timmy Tebow is a great guy. He loves the Lord and isn’t afraid to let it show. He has been setting an example for many. Tim is one that fears God and NOT man. He doesn’t hide his faith under a bushel. As scripture says in Matthew 5:14-16, ” Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and hide it under a bushel, but on a candlestick: and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Tim is doing that very thing. He’s obeying God’s command. He’s letting his fath shine forth in a world of darkness. Because of this, many hat and despise Tim. Many can’t stand him because deep down thay feel convicted and know he’s the REAL DEAL! As Tim already has, he will always be approached with trails and tribulation. Scripture confirms this in John15:17-20, “These things i command you, that you love one another. If the world hate you, ye know it hated me(Jesus) before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I(Jesus) have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. Remember the word that I said unto you, the servant(us) is not greater than his lord(Jesus). If they persecuted me(Jesus, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.” This is going on today in Tim’s life as well as in ours, those who serve God. We will always be persecuted for our faith, but we shouldn’t get brought down because of this. We should always stand strong for our faith and convictions. Tim is a great role model. I pray one day many will find God and submit their lives unto Him.

Thanks Tim for being that role model to many, as well as to me.
Thanks, and God bless you.
Stay strong in the Lord who strengthens you.

to do with you with your hatred of all things good(the Gators and Tebow) If there is a loser, look in the mirror.

Jeff
As a Georgia fan I have conficting feelings about Tebow’s success.
As someone who watches the sport of football with a keen interest
and passion I have especially enjoyed projecting QB’s of the past
as to whether their skills would translate to the NFL game. And
no to be too bragadocious but I am pretty good for a novice at doing
so . Tebow is an interesting one for me. And while some things
about his game is a real problem he has enough intangibles to make
you think twice about declaring that he will bomb. As I said I am
somewhat conficted because their are some things about Tebow extremely
hard to root against. But let’s be clear that local programs in the
southeast and especially Georgia have a reason for wanting him to fail
besides the fact that he was a Gator QB with perhaps a bit too much
fawning of the media. And that that is if Tebow fails it could
affect a special recruit at the QB position causing the kid to choose
somewhere he would be more likely to be developed for the NFL.
And of course fans who want to see Florida less dominant than they
have been are going to be down with that possibility. I think you
will agree that while Florida can get a wealth of talent as it has
done in the past and especially currently their offensive system
could hurt them long term at least in a position or two. I suspect
I am not the only fan kind of conflicted when it comes to Tebow and
rooting for his success.

Because he cries like a female dog in front of the camera. Because people like you, Mr. Scultz-Olbermann-Simmons, are sycophants for this media creation. Unlike Herschel Walker, Tim Tebow was a beneficiary of Urban Meyer, Percy Harvin and Lewis Murphy. ANYONE who knows football knows that Tim Tebow is a mediocre quarterback with a strong will and GREAT talent around him. I think you should quit lecturing your readers and start looking at things objectively.

Sorry Jeff, I don’t have to “back off” anything. If it’s truly a free country, we can say anything we want about Tebow. Personally, I’m sick of St. Timmy never doing anything wrong and being oh-so-holier-than-thou. As a female, I am vehemently opposed to an ad airing during the Superbowl by a homophobic organization that is against women’s reproductive health rights.

I realize this is an unpopular opinion in the South, but I was born and raised here. When a man is able to carry a pregnancy to term, you can get back to me.

Back to St. Timmy, the football player. I find his stats to be inflated, and I find his lack of penalties for his numerous over-excessive celebrations very suspicious. I don’t need him shoved down my throat ad nauseum any more.

Do I think he will have success in the NFL? Not nearly as much success as he’s had in college.

I will try to keep my thoughts on the Superbowl ad out of the discussion, but suffice it to say, my opinion of him went even lower when he aligned himself with such a homophobic organization that lacks integrity.

Back to St. Timmy, the football player. The fact that he was never called on his excessive celebrations was just gross. How much do we have to deify a player? Newsflash: he’s NOT god. Or Superman, contrary to popular belief. His stats are over-inflated with throwing so much from the 2 yard line to the end zone.

Do I think he’ll have success in the NFL? Not nearly as much success as he’s had in college. I haven’t followed the Senior Bowl, or any of the follow-up, but why shouldn’t he be criticized if he played poorly? Is he above critcism now?

Now, as much as it pains me to say, I really love watching Peyton play and have no reason to root against him unless he is playing the Falcons. Manning is a class act and stupendous player.

Same goes for Tebow. I have no reason to root against a guy who has done everything right. Just because he beat my teams in college? Please. Maybe he makes it maybe he doesn’t, but I wouldn’t bet against him. He’ll find something else to be successful at if he doesn’t. William, there’s no such thing as pro-abortion. That’s a false representation of people who are pro-choice. Nobody wants abortions to happen, but that doesn’t make it the goverment’s right to force a woman to have a child she doesn’t want. It is true however to refer to people like you as anti-choice. You want to dictate to other people what they can do with thheir bodies and you will continue to waste time, energy and tax dollars to fight that losing battle. As far as a football fan, Teebow is one of the best college players I’ve ever seen (up there with Hersel and Bo Jackson). Unfortunately, my feeling about him as a player is less because of his outshowing of his religion and beliefs. But, the only “grief” i would give Teebow, is go on a beer break and skip his commercial or change the channel when you see him without his helmet.

If attention is not what Teebow is after, why not wear his Bible verse on his chest under his jersey? The same message is there and obviously God will know that he reflected his true beliefs. The supporters of his public display are likely the same people who chastised Roddy White and others regarding the “Free Michael Vick shirt” they wore during the game…Where’s the difference? Tebow will play in the NFL but probably at RB or TE. We definitely need more people of his character in professional sports. I don’t believe he’s the type to go into a night club with a pistol and shoot himself or anybody else for that matter.

I think the media’s double standard toward religion is what really irks people. The same broadcasters that think it is cool for Tebow to advertise bible verses, are the sameones who go into apoplexy over prayer before the start of a game.

I do have a question–does anyone on this blog think Tebow is having sex with his girlfriend? Has anyone asked him? If he is, how does that square with his overt christan personae?

I think i like Tebow now that i heard fr halsey -mike, mike,- halsey is too hard on you. When a women has the right to have relations w/whomever and how ever often and w/ nooo considerations… then becomes pregnant… common sense says she also has no responsibility to that life but rather the right to abort the child…I mean, its all about her and her rights-right.why should the life of the child be protected especially if it interferes or is unwanted at the time.Thats not fair to the women . why hold her accountable when abortion is legal.Responsibility plays no part here. besides the pain of abortion tho immediate and cruel to the lil one plus the pain down the road to an ever maturing woman is small compared to the rights of the individuals involved. Its our fast food society… don’t tell me the truth or i will be upset and hate you. I will eat as i please BUT when i get good and fat and miserable i’ll want to know why you did not tell me.I think i like Tim Tebow now. yes i do.yeah

Its because Tebow is intelligent……because he speaks clearly with proper English…..because he is not a THUG……because he is a strong Christian and is not afraid to admit it…..because he comes from a good strong family…..because he has ethics and morals……because he does what is right not what is popular. Tim Tebow is a stellar example of a good human being who only wants to help others. I hope he makes it in the NFL with a huge payday. His money will be used to help others not be wasted on baby-mammas and BS. Thats why people want to see Tim Tebow fail. Sorry….he is already a winner!

I think Tim Tebow is one of the finest young men I’ve ever seen. Not only is he an unbelievable athlete, he’s a phenomenal young man. I believe the reason people are so tough on him is because he stands up for what he believes in. Not many young people will do that today. My blood flows Tennessee orange but it gives me courage in the future to find a young man who not only “talks the talk” but “walks the walk.” Credit has to go to the adults in his life – his parents, teachers, coaches, mentors, etc. too.

We’re all sick of having John 3:16 and the rest of that drivel shoved in our faces, and when it comes in the form of eye-black patches, it’s just that much more revolting. the ONLY reason Tebow was invited to the Senior Bowl can be summed up by the number of people blogging about him (on draft blogs and political blogs). his “brand” is bank right now. will he make it in the NFL? will he play QB? TE? Wildcat? Who cares? Did people “wonder” if Ryan Leaf might have been better suited at TE? Did people think Tim Couch should have been a “H back”? Doug Flutie was dismissed by everyone, and while it took him 14 or 15 years and stints in the USFL and CFL, he did have a decent NFL career and even snuck into a Pro Bowl. Every player at the Senior Bowl is disected by the scouts. Unfortunately, Tebow is being disected by the media (and non-media morons in the blogsphere). Kurt Warner and Jake Delhomme were not drafted. Tom Brady was an afterthought (6th round?). Tebow will get his shot (in training camp), and if he performs, he’ll start/play in the NFL. “Jeepers” (shout out to the squeaky clean TT).

As you admitted that’s what a lot of folks don’t like – yes he was a good college player (some would even say he was overrated which is also another reason people loathe the guy), but fans of the sport don’t need folks like you and other media members telling them how they should feel towards a guy. The more you folks say that they should like him the more they will despise him.

It’s not envy, it’s a realistic assessment of what really has occurred. Tim Tebow, while a good football player, but a mediocre QUARTERBACK (Thus, the evaluation of those at the next level who actually get PAID to evaluate players reasoning that he will either have to switch to H-back, tight-end, or fullback, or just not be in the league.)is an over hyped, media created entity , who has gotten WAY too much credit for the performance of the Florida Gators football TEAM over the course of his matriculation. Lest we forget: Chris Leak was the starting QB during Tebow’s freshman year, a national championship year for the TEAM. Also a question: Why did Urban Meyer feel the need to take time away from Leak during that year, but did not feel compelled to do the same to Tebow during HIS senior year? Further, what really sickens us is the constant media droning that somehow the threshold for virtue can get no higher than what Tebow has set it. There are many great football players, year in, and year out, who are just as involved in their respective communities, and just a positive with regard to how they conduct themselves, as Tebow has been. Why do they not get the kind of attention he has gotten? Does skin tone factor into that equation? In summation, what I would submit that Tim Tebow IS not the greatest football player ever, just the most fawned over. Hershel Walker, Bo Jackson, Mike Rozier, heck even Archie Griffin, were better players than Tebow at the collegiate level, but the level of media servitude, servility, and obsequiousness, could not even begin to match that for those great players as compared to what it has bestowed upon this guy.

He was an class example of what the young college kids used to look like and I think he is deserving of anything he wins. Jeff – I couldn’t agree with you more – great article. I just can’t understand why so many fellow dawg fans hate him so much and want the worst for him. Just let me ask you all this – isn’t this (Tim Tebow) the kind of man that you would want your daughter to date or marry? Absolutely. He has the character traits that MOST of us would desire to have – but yet so many of you wish him nothing but bad things?? Come on – after all the crap that is going on in sports today (yes, I just read where another former UGA star was arrested for cocaine, DUI, guns, etc) and all the thugs that are playing sports – isn’t Tebow a person who YOU would want to be a spokesperson or roll model of the game?
Some of those in the media may be right – Tebow may not make it very far in the NFL (neither did beloved David Green or Eric Zeier), but you what? With the character traits, leadership skills, and the desire to make a difference that Tebow has – he will go far in this life and do well and will be a success – even if it isn’t in the NFL.

I’m a Dawg grad. The media is to blame here with the love fest through his college career. Yes, he’s a fantastic kid and a great role model, but the coverage has been overboard with this guy and now they want to find chinks in his armor. He walks the talk and the media really like bringing people off of their pedestal.. The person to blame here for Tebow’s problems at Senior Bowl week are Urban Meyer’s …. no SEC championship, No National Championship and no experience under center. He’s not PREPARED to be an NFL QB, unless he gets work as a project…. so that means later rounds because no NFL team outside maybe Buffalo or Jacksonville are going to take a chance on him, because they won’t want to spend 2nd or 3rd round money on him if he needs a lot of work. Yes, his leadership is unquestionable and his heart is through the roof, but he needs work on his mechanics.

I’m embarrassed at a shameless self-promoter who uses a secular public university to promote his narrow religious beliefs.

I’m embarrassed by a kid who NEVER challenged himself intellectually (took the SAT early and scored a barely NCAA qualifying 890, then hid out in a home economics major) being promoted as “the perfect student-athlete” and undeservedly given The Draddy Award. His eyeshadow should have read SAT 8:90

I’m embarrassed at this witless wonder being turned into the face of my alma mater over far more deserving undergraduates who challenged themselves and excelled in real majors.

I have no problem with Christians. If these clowns got us to agree to export all Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists, then they’d come after the Episcopalians, Lutherans, Prebyterians, Methodists, and Catholics. They won’t stop until our kids are studying the contributions of the Jerry Falwell in our history classes (if you haven’t heard, Texas is already on the case) and stoning us to death for drinking alcohol.

Vick likely to have many suitors in 2010
Posted: January 27th, 2010 | NFL.com Staff | Tags: Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Michael Vick, Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, St. Louis Rams

As I detailed when QB Michael Vick signed with the Eagles, this was always set up to be a one-year marriage, as by the very nature of the contract. The Eagles won’t be picking up the big contract option for 2010, according to sources, or at least do not plan to. They will explore trade options for Vick during the window they have to do so in March before deciding whether or not to pick up his option.

Sources close to Vick fully anticipate him playing elsewhere in 2010, and say he is intent on being a starter if at all possible. Such opportunities should arise. Clubs to keep a close eye on include Buffalo, St. Louis, Carolina, Oakland and Jacksonville. Those teams are in the market for QB help, and many have struggled to sell tickets and attract attention in recent years, with their smaller-market status.

Vick’s cause will be helped as well by the weak free-agent class of quarterbacks — Daunte Culpepper could be the class of that group, for instance — as well as an upcoming draft without prospects who seem ready to play right away. Whether teams opt to wade in heavily for Vick on the trade market remains to be seen, but if he hit the market as a free agent, league sources expect at least a half-dozen or so teams to have legitimate interest.

You still haven’t said anything about his CHARACTER that reflects any truth that he won’t be a success in the future…or that he is not a great person. You are just a brain-dead redneck who probably never really went to FL anyway. Yeah, who would want their son to be a successful, moral, winning leader who graduates from college (no matter the major and GPA) and will likely have his choice of any great woman he cares for? Ummmm…me. You would probably prefer your daughter to marry Mike Vick or someone.

I’m amazed it took 34 post to get a Vick mention…Played in the NFL, it’s a business! Big business! I don’t care how great a guy TT is, and he appears to be all the right things. If his QB skills don’t translate to the league he is done. Play TE, LB whatever, wish you luck, but I have a starnge feeling this kid won’t change positions. Tebow is a nice guy but he won’t pan out in the NFL. The scouts usually know what they’re talking about and they don’t expect him to do very well. He played in a college scheme that was built around him. That scheme will not work at the pro level. He would get destroyed. Period. I don’t hate Tebow, I’m simply telling you like it is. He will get drafted, make some signing bonus money, play a year or two, get dropped, and then go on missions to spread his faith. Book it.

Any other player would be called for unsportmanlike conduct. He acts like a pharisee and I don’t believe he is genuine, much less humble. I have, however, been to Columbia Law School and am a partner in a major Chicago firm, so not only am I smarter than Timmuh, but I’ll most likely have far greater lifetime earnings than him. After all, other than two seasons of 4th round money, Timmuh’s going to have to rely on his speaking fees on the Christian chitlin’ circuit and doing tv commercials for car dealers back in Gainesville.

I suspect most of you, especially the negative Tebowers, have not been to church in quite some time and don’t recognize a true faithful person when you see one. I’ll bet if Tebow was of another faith you would not waste the time to bash him. Kids can’t have prayer in school because it offends one person in a crowd.

Tebow is just a good kid trying to make a difference–what are each of you doing to make the world better? He’s a good role model.

He’s just a good kid trying to make his way in this world so let him be.

Mark Richt seems to be a good person–he is just associated with a thugh football team. He should not be personally condemned for that.

confession: I really don’t like lawyers or Ivy League types, but UF ‘93 knows the score. I don’t know that it’s Tebow’s fault universities have become surrogate NFL minor league franchises, but Tim Tebow is an athlete-athlete, not a student-athlete (is UF in session right now?). I had a relative who were true Christians, who walked away from professional sports to do (their) god’s work (as missionary in Central America). how about the Oakland A’s prospect who has eshewed a major league career for the priesthood? I wouldn’t make that choice, but I have more respect for someone who walks the walk. Any of you “Teboners” ever meet Dale Murphy? As devout and faith-driven athlete as you’ll ever meet (OFF THE FIELD). AND even “off the field” he wouldn’t discuss his beliefs unless asked. Tebow’s a wannabe jock in Christian clothing.

Schultz,

By and large, you guys in the sports media are the reason why Tebow has been (and remains) such a lightning rod for attention. Clearly, he continues to generate fan reaction that runs the gamut from sappily worshipful to downright hateful. I wonder why?

Hell, it’s because you guy won’t stop writing about him. If he breaks wind standing in line for Avatar, you nimrods repot it above the fold.

You journalists are the ones who keep poking a sharp stick in the eye of the mad dog; and then you have the nerve to curse all the lingering negativity you just provoked.

You guys have been gushing over Tebow’s exemplary charachter and preparing his spot in the College Hall of Fame for four years. And now you sir, are disengenuous enough to feign bewilderement and frustration at all the anti-Tebowism that still exists in the world.

It seems to me that what spawned anti-Tebowism in the first place was a widely-held perception that two institutions that oughta know better completely lost their objectivity. Sports journalists couldn’t say enough wonderful things about Tim; and SEC officials protected him from contact and ignored his on-field infractions.

Those like me who find merit in either of these propositions can only speculate as to the reasons why. Speaking personally, I don’t give a rip why.

At the very least, there’s a perception that Tebow has received preferential treatment relative to his peers. Even if untrue, this perception has been masquerading as reality long enough to pis off plenty of folks.

Is it Tebow’s fault? Hardly seems possible, but sometimes some of us mistake the message from the messenger.

I’ve exhausted my cache of cliches.

How about some more girls-in-bikinis pictures dude?

The problem here is the media. The media has overblown this young man up to the point that they made Tebow like his God’s perfect football player. People are tried of media and the image they put on people. People like Nancy Grace have made a living humuliting people. This 24 hour media cycle has left many college fans sick to their stomach. I am one of them.

Look, Tebow is a nice guy who just tried to play a sport and have fun with it. Did he win all the games he was in BY HIMSELF? NOOO! Was he surrounded by great talent? YES! Did he make a great difference for his team? Yes!!! Did he make some mistakes? Yes!!! Has his college coach lost it? Oh yeah…… (No one should put their careers over their own health, family, and sanity.) Has he matured to the fullest extent that he is going to be? NOOOOOO!

Look, let the NFL judge him, not the haters. If he fails (which I think he is going have to move to a different position anyway) then he fails by the NFL standards. If he makes it, then he makes it. But the media itself needs to JUST BE QUIET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You guys made this mess (people making all of this crap about the young man.) The media are the blame for this sewerage.

Good job BLUE. Lot of people that are young and foolish and full of themselves out there. We r all terminal and its coming a lot faster than we think. Mostly, young ,brash mouths that don’t know about humility or deference, or The Bible’s Gospel message for that matter. As if someones SAT score is the measure of a man or woman. But that is the way this America has been raised…in a Godless public arena by a lot of folks(not all) that have never held a ditchdigging job- I am out there in work that only gives me pay IF we work- that pontificate their academic musings over lattes and find waiting til marriage, (vs defrauding our daughters), for intimacy. Our country is who we’ve educated them to be and we are reaping all that we have sown. GOD is a perfect gentleman and has stepped back and left us to our selfish/ GODless path. If not for the private and religious educational system our plight would be much worse. Most do not get it yet it is all around them-dems or republicans ,it doesn’t matter -wrong/bad is always wrong and bad. “they did whAT WAS right in their own eyes and their end was death”…finally,Tebows ad should play and i say there are more women who (see Concerned Women of America)r for it than against it.thanks again blue.

Tiim Tebow is one of the greatest college players and most inspirational people I’ve ever encountered. Why people insist on tearing him down is beyond me. But he, himself, says he knows who he is with God, and does not let the criticism bother him. I wish i could be so generous. Anybody who even goes to an intense practice after having a 103-degree temperature the night before is amazing. i’d like ot see many people even go into work the next day after being so sick. In the end, these negative comments will go into the trashbin—and Tim Tebow will go down in history.

A couple things.

1. Plain Truth: we don’t and have never had rights in this country, we have privileges. A list of temporary privileges! Contrary to what you might think, most of the freedoms that we are afforded in this country can be taken away, and there not rights if they can be taken away.As for the faith of our “Founding Fathers”, just wikipedia Salem Massachusetts and you’ll see for yourself how well a religious oligarchy has worked in our country’s history.

As for Tim Tebow, I have no problem with him and his many accomplishments. I do have a problem with him being the poster boy for the religious right as they throw their money around in order to cram their narrow minded agenda down millions of peoples throats on Super Bowl Sunday.

If Tim Tebow and his religious following are really serious about advocating for alternatives to abortion, then they can start by putting their money where their mouth is by improving adoption agencies and foster care homes in this country. I’d say that’s a little more economical than spending 1-2 million on a self righteous ” family values” Super Bowl commercial.I respect the guy’s opinion even if I don’t completely agree with it. And I appreciate that he’s trying to use his celebrity for good. But creating awareness on an issue in a public forum isn’t the same thing as pro-actively looking for solutions. You can’t advocate alternatives for abortion until the alternatives are improved.

Jeff, I thought after reading this column, that you had written the most non-controversial, innocuous piece you could… maybe so you could go back to your Super Bowl research… maybe just to fish for some “attaboys” from the readership: “College kid plays football, stays off the No-Fly list and out of jail. Give him some space while he prepares to play in an all-star game.” Seems moderate and reasonable enough.
Sadly, once again, I see I have miscalculated the extent to which logic has absented itself from the public discourse. And while there were a few early kudos, and a brilliant jibe at the sports agent industry and political action committees, describing them as “munipulators” (doesn’t get more hilarious than that), the messenger eventually became the pinata long after the message had been forgotten. Hey Biomass,

What exactly did this “Christian Mafia” do during the Brunnel years? Did they pick up people in the middle of the night and force them to endure a 1 hour church sermon?

Tim Tebow has been spoon fed all this “dogma”. If you consider the Bible, upon which all modern Judeo-Christian law was initially based to be “dogma” then so be it. I always thought it was Maoism, Lenininism, Stalinism, fascism, I always thought that was “dogma”. Apparently the real threat to society is bible verses. I guess bible verses are responsible for a lot of the crime like murder, rape, robbery, etc. Must be all that “dogma” from that evil ole Bible.

In this twisted world we see all these bloggers finding reason to hate a man because he’s not ashamed of his beliefs. I don’t know how else to say it except that you really have to have a twisted mind to hate the guy because he professes his belief in God. If you’re gonna hate someone hate them cause they murder, rape, molest children, don’t hate someone who does no harm to to you and whose only “crime” is to publicly profess his belief in God.

Actually, Tebow should be ashamed of his beliefs. He runs with a crowd who confuses mistranslations and metaphors with literal truth. No, the earth isn’t a few thousand years old, and no Adam and Even didn’t walk the earth among dinosaurs. One can still be a Christian without wallowing in one’s ignorance. The Tebow/Focus on the Family crowd chooses to wallow. That’s their right. But some of us don’t want to listen to them spreading their nonsensical interpretation while sitting down to enjoy a football game.

I agree with you that the earth is not 6,000 years old and that people and dinosaurs lived at the same time. To me its just not possible. However, I don’t ridicule some of these people for believing it. For all you know they may in fact be right. I’ve debated this with several of these folks who do believe this and believe it or not some of them are indeed rational, intelligent people. And while I disagree with them there is some actual reasoning and some science that does support some of what they contend. And no. Not you or anyone else for that matter can conclusively prove who old the earth is. I’m in the 2- 4 billion years crowd but how do you really know its not only 100 million years old? Or 10 million?

I don’t think you can condemn them as being ignorant simply because you disagree with their interpretation. The mark of intelligent thought is to be able to entertain different ideas without accepting or denying them right off.

That being said, when you pose for for the camera in an empty stadium, reading the bible with full football gear on, you’re asking to be ridiculed.

Rooted against in life, no. Mocked relentlessly, yes.

Now, I cannot really believe that Tim Tebow was out on the field practicing this week for the North/South game with a 105 temperature. That is really stupid. Most people with that temp would be hospitalized, especially an adult like Tebow. Also, you can have brain damage at 106. Someone needs to stop him when he becomes dangerous to himself.

Most likely for his Faith in Jesus Christ and his upcoming commercial having to do with the Abortion issue during the Super Bowl…at least he believes in something…people will be people……..God loves everyone and gives each person an invitation……….that is Tebow’s message…ashame people scrutinize him and consider his faith a detriment to football performance after 2 ntional titles and great warrior like leadership….course he could never even play back up qb for the mighty falcons…yeah right..lol

I am a HUGE Tebow fan and wish him the best. He made the SEC look great while playing at Florida. I am not sure how anyone can not like the kid. I do think his struggles are an indication of lack of fundamental coaching by his position coach at Florida. When some of these high school kids are being recruited they need to think about how that “gimmick” offense will prepare them for the NFL, if being in the NFL is their goal. I am sure none of Paul Johnson’s linemen, QB’s or WR (after Thomas, whom he didn’t recruit) come to Tech thinking about the NFL.

Florida’s idea of being way down is probably significantly different from Georgia’s idea of being way down. Georgia has been way down since:
Reagan Administration
Soviet Union Not Dissolved
Berlin Wall Still Standing
W Was Not Yet Governor of Texas
Clemens Was Not even a Rookie
Marino Was Still At Pitt
Riggins Was Still Playing
Who’s Bill Clinton?
Iranian Hostage Crisis Still Fresh In Our Minds
Little Over A Decade From 1St Moon Walk
No Canseco No McGuire No Sosa
Billy Carter Still With Us
Years From Internet and Cell Phones
And On And On And On

And YET we must listen to Georgia fans saying Florida will be “Down”, you are probably right, because 2 losses is down for Florida and for Georgia 2 losses would be reason to farther tout Richt as Bear Bryant.

It’s sad but no surprise that there are so many who dislike or hate Tebow because of his faith. Many of the comments here only show that the more we act like Jesus, the more likely we are to be treated like He was. If they mocked and crucified the only perfect One to walk the earth why would any of us (who are far from perfect) expect anything less? Keep walking in those nail scarred footsteps, Tim. They may lead you to a cross but they will also lead you to a glory far greater than Heisman trophies and national championships.

Tebow is ridiculed simply because of what collegeballfan, jealousy, and because he stands up for what he believes.
I’ve never actually heard a UGA fan say anything bad about him, but I live in North Alabama and all we have are Auburn and Alabama fans. I know Alabama fans hate him because he went to Florida instead. Alabama fans(that didn’t graduate from there) are pretty much all classless in my experience. I mean, it’s been about a month and a half since the SEC Championship, and they’re still going on about how he cried. It’s amazing how they can make fun of him for losing that big of a game and crying, but they don’t say anything when Auburn beats them for the fourth time in a row and all of their seniors cry(note that’s not even technically a bowl game).

Anywho, I know Atheists who hate Tebow simply because he’s a Christian and makes Christianity “look good.”

My entire family LOVE Tebow, and wish him success in everything! : )

And for the Bama hillbillys that are running their mouth let me remind you that you live in one of the worst irrelavent states in America. You guys all move to Atlanta. Saban will be surfing out of there in a couple years and then you will go back to being second to Auburn.

As for Tebow, We are talking about X’s and O’s not christianity and baptistism. Tebow better develop some thick skin cause that’s what he gonna get is a bunch of critics. I love the Lord too but you cant pull the wool over my eyes. Being a strong christian doesnt cover up for his lack of football fundamentals. Tebow will always be a class act and a true role model. But he still remains and always will be a Gator. I guess I will learn to like him at some point in his career like Peyton Manning who I couldn’t stand at first.

“The organization that is sponsering Tebow’s Ad is one of the most right-wing political organizations in America. They were the largest contributor in America to anti-gay rights organizations. In California they contributed more money againt (Prop 8 it think that established legal rights for Gay/Lesb) than any organization including the Morman church. They are a modern day Moral Majority.”
WRONG!!!
Focus on the Family is a christian organization that supports, defends and instructs Christians and other interested people in developing strong bible based families. They are not a political organization. The Jewish bible and the Christian bible say the same thing because they are the same. That is: Homosexuality is an “abomination before God”. This IS a private matter as long as it stays private. But when this is brought into the public arena with proposed legislation, and because that this is a government of, by, and for the people, then Christians cannot stay silent, because they are then responsible before God for supporting sin. In regard to Tebows Pro-Life and Pro-Family commercial, That same bible states “Tho Shalt do no murder”. Once again because it is in the public arena, it is appropriate to denounce abortion in public.

Tim Tebow is not being used. He is practicing his faith. And, because the US Supreme Court in 1879 held that you “could not separate Christianity from the government because the country was founded on Christianity”, it is appropriate to speak of your faith in a public forum.

I believe he will be a state lawmaker in a few years. He will make it as a backup qb for two or three years,at which time his ego will get the best of him and he’ll set his sights on a political career. He could be a fullback or tight end for a long time but the ego will guide him .

I think the reason he’s getting such hate is that he is a Christian and not afraid to show it. Is he perfect, no. Is he a great qb ? yes , but at the college and high school level. I think with all his “intangibles” he deserves a shot, he raises the game of all the players on his team. and for all of those who doubt me, look at all the seniors that came back because tebow did, they could’ve been drafted last year. he is a feel good story and draws ratings , ratings , ratings and until he fails all sports media will continue to cover him heavily.

Abortion is the altar of sacrifice for the religion of the Secular Humansists! You jeoparize that supposed “right” and you will get hell to pay from them!!!! Since when does killing a baby in the womb not become murder??? Let’s admit, it’s killing!!! Tebow is an example of what we should be encouraging every woman who is considering abortion. Instead, we have people like BIOMASS who believe we evolved and are not responsible to a creator. Look at what has happened to our society since we accepted the “theory” of evolution in our schools –murder rates up, abortion, infanticide, euthanasia. For crying out loud, we get more upset over Michael Vick for killing dogs than we do for the thousands of children killed everyday in abortion clinics. It’s suddenly a right if it’s a child, but not a right when it’s an animal!! The bottom line is that people don’t want to yield to God who is higher than them. They instead make their own God that they want to yield to. Their morality dictates their philosophy! I say, Go Tebow and don’t listen to the naysayers.

The reason we are tired of Tebow is the media overkill. Everyone from ESPN to, well, you apparently, go on and on about how wonderful it is to bathe in his golden showers and can’t understand why some of us would rather not follow suit. @Thomas Freeman: You hit the proverbial nail on the head…..Tebow’s “whiteness” is a big part of the problem. This country has grown to hate any strong white males who are outspoken. If he were black and doing the same thing everyone would love him. That being said, I don’t think Tebow is a “great white hope” …..if he does nothing else in life he will go down as one of the greatest college football players of all time…that’s not hope …..that’s fact..

Jeff – Anybody who does not think Tim Tebow is one of the greatest players in the history of college football is without credibility. I believe he is the greatest leader I have ever seen in college football. Now – I am perturbed that you would say acknowledging that fact is difficult for Georgia fans because I have no trouble acknowledging it and I am a Georgia fan. I do have trouble with you making such a comment because my perception is that you make it for one purpose only, to wit: to poke the Georgia fan base in the eye. My take is that most every knowledgeable college football fan I know (many of whom
happen to be Georgia fans) not only acknowledges this fact, they truly admire what Tebow has done at the college level. Furthermore, most of us hope he has great success in the NFL. In addition, whether he adjusts to the pro game or not, Tim Tebow will be successful in life. I ask you Jeff, “Isn’t that what is really important?”

I also agree 100% with Joe T.’s comments.

By the way Joe T, I worked with President Grubb and Coach Russell to help raise funds back in 1979-80 to get Georgia Southern football started. Erk Russell was one of the finest men I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Plus, as George Lopez would say, he was “very funny,” and great fun to work with. What a joy.

Really, Jeff, you wonder why people like to root against Tim Tebow? You wonder why people like to root against a sanctimonious, self-righteous, Jesus-loves-me-more-than-you crybaby? Personally, as a GT grad, I always root for Florida, but I lost my stomach for watching Tebow after his first nauseating finger pointing upward. I know a lot of players do that, but it seemed to me that Tebow really believed that drivel. It was more than just a mindless gesture. How dare he think that God helped him do anything! God does not give a damn about Tim Tebow or football. How dare he sit on the sidelines and cry after losing a football game. It means nothing! Give me the players that smile and shake hands after the game, no matter how big of a game. Why root against Tim Tebow. Very simple: when he points his finger skyward he feels he is pointing at himself. He is a wonderful player, a great talent. But that kind of selfish hubris has no place in our world. Tim Tebow only “loves” God when things go right. Show me a video where he points skyward after a three-and-out and I might change my mind. Right now, he is a totally self-absorbed loser.

I think it would be great if Tebow could play in the NFL. People like him would bring the % down for bad people in the league. The news the last 3 or 4 days tells us that 78% of NFL players are financially broke within 2 years after they quit playing football. I thought we had smarter people than this. I understand if a player gets 5 years in the NFL he’s qualified to get $30,000 a month for retirement. I don’t know at what age it would start. I did read where OJ Simpson gets about $32,000
a month. That’s a waste.

Tebow loves Jesus and is vocal about it. For some reason that lights a fire in people whether they know it or not. My opinion is that it is the biggest reason for all the hate/ridicule. Just the name ‘Jesus’ is super-powerful. I wonder why?
