Favre’s retirement could open door for Vick to Vikings

If Brett Favre decides to walk away again ...

040009_SPORTS_FBN-EAGLES-CO

... Michael Vick (or Donovan McNabb) may walk in.

Brett Favre is pondering retirement again, and for all we know that pondering might extend through the winter, through the spring, past the draft, past free agency and into summer and the start of training camp.

Should he step away (again) — and there are indications he will — don’t be surprised if the name Michael Vick comes up as a possible replacement.

Let’s start with Favre. Earlier in the postseason, he told ESPN’s Ed Werder,  “If you win, you go on. If you lose, you’re done, and for me, that could very well be my last game.” And just this morning, my pal Adam Schefter of the same network sent this on Twitter: “Let this be the first of hopefully very few Favre-Watch updates: Favre told ESPN’s Ed Werder it was ‘highly unlikely’ he’d play again.”

I know. We can’t know because even Favre doesn’t know, and even if Favre knows something at lunch, he may change his mind at dinner. And then back again at breakfast. But let’s operate on the unsafe assumption for now that he’s retiring.

The Vikings’ quarterback depth chart reads: Favre-Tarvaris Jackson-Sage Rosenfels. Jackson is an impending free agent and, while he says that he is open to staying with the team, you have to wonder about how the franchise views him, given the way they treated him through the romancing of Favre. If Favre doesn’t come back, there is no telling what direction the team will go.

Enter Vick: Minnesota was one of the teams believed to show early interest in Vick, until  the rumor finally was shot down by owner Zygi Wilf and coach Brad Childress (both of whom have truth issues). Vick had some of his best moments against the Vikings. He obviously doesn’t have Favre’s accuracy but his strong arm pairs well with receivers Sidney Rice, Percy Harvin and Bernard Berrian.

ESPN already is floating Vick-to-Minnesota in its “rumors” section this morning (requires Insiders subscription). Speculation also has Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb going to the Vikings, where he would be reunited with Childress (his former quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator with the Eagles).

Very few people believe Vick will be back with the Eagles. Other rumored destinations are Buffalo (needs a quarterback; owner is looking for a marketing tool), St. Louis (general manager Billy Devaney was with the Falcons and has kept in contact with Vick), Arizona (Kurt Warner may retire; Matt Leinart’s status is uncertain); Oakland (Al Davis: enough said) and Carolina (Jake Delhomme’s future is uncertain).

For what it’s worth, the Falcons play St. Louis, Arizona and Carolina next season, but not Minnesota, Buffalo or Oakland. Any thoughts on Vick in purple?

I can’t imagine any team would seriously consider Michael Vick as a candidate for their starting quarterback position. His passing ability, what little there is, has not improved since his days with the Falcons.

I certainly don’t expect Vick to end up with the Vikings.

The Vikings Love retreads and there is that past history with Cunningham already. Could Vick be the next QB to lose the NFC Championship on the boot of an NFC south kicker in overtime???

Well maybe, but considering he and AD carry the ball like they sweat butter… I’m thinking not likely.

I am the best to ever play my position and as long as I can limp back onto the field I will. I do like taking months off from responsibility during the off season as though I am retired. Therefore…….I once again shall retire. Maybe Arizona next year.

I sadly could see Vick in the purple(prob see him smoking the purple too), but the only reason is the fact that the Vikings have a strong offense and even Vick couldn’t screw it up. But the fact remains that Vick is expendable, he’s not trustworthy and taking a risk on a player like Vick to run your offense “FULL TIME” makes you think not twice but FIFTY times more about that decision….

Lake Minnetonka Boat Cruises anyone? Minnesota fans refuse to deal with transgressions. They cleaned house after the boat crusie scandal. Was the end of the line for Mike Tice, Daunte Culpepper, etc. They are not going to take Vick on now, especially with them already having a mobile-QB project in Tavarres Jackson on the roster (which may or may not be a bust and bringing in Sage Rosenfels last offseason).

Jeff,

For the one millionth time, Vick is not an NFL caliber Quarterback. He is simply a short, fast guy who can throw a long, tight spiral with perhaps the poorest accuracy in NFL history coupled with the IQ of a door knob.

Why is this so hard for you and others to grasp?

Prediction ” After a summer of speculation and AFTER training camp, Brett Favre will board a private jet and to a packed press conference announce his return to the Minnesota Vikings because of the love of the game and his Viking teammates” The only thing Favre loves is Favre. The sports media will once again get out their knee pads and push their readership to the point of mass suicide assaulting us with everything Favre. I’m 50 yrs old and have been priviledged to watch authentic heroes of this game like Walter Payton, LeRoy Kelly, Jack Lambert, Roger Stauback, and hundreds more who knew the game was bigger than themselves and who played it with mastery and left it with quiet dignity. Brett Favre threw way his chance of breathing the rarefied air reserved for those whose greatness is matched only by their humility

As to Favre plaese stay retired! This 2010, no 1996. Next some team will try to Mr. Leroy Jordan and mr. Sam Huff to play.

Favre has lost his ability to make sound judgment. Hell never makes up for the mistake he made this year. What an idiot. He blew that game, clearly. Move on and retire.

There is talk that he could end up in Tampa. I hope he doesn’t come back to Atlanta because they are going downhill now and will have to rebuild in about 2 years. The definitely lack a quarterback and Turner only has a few more years running to help the weak passing game.

shouldn’t this blog be on a Twin Cities website? Vick will be a good fit somewhere, as a back-up with “starter” experience, should the starter go down (or underperform). the Vikings need a starter (even if Favre doesn’t retire). if the Vikes can’t find a starter via free agency or trade (McNabb is a much better scenario), they should draft the best available QB. the Jets (and Ravens, and 2005 Steelers) have proved you can win in the post-season with a rookie QB when the QB is backed by a stout defense.

First, let’s get this straight, Favre ain’t retiring anytime soon…if ever ..and certainly not before Willard Scott shows #4’s picture on the side of a Smucker’s Jar on the Today Show. I think that this is especially true after yesterday. Favre may be the third most competitive person on the planet after Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. He cares about his legacy and he does not want to “go out” with his last pass being intercepted setting a loss in a conference championship game. You really think that he wants to go through eternity being the “Bill Buckner” of the NFL. He’ll be back in Minnesota next year. ‘Course he’ll throw a crucial interception in next year’s playoff game too.

I figure Vick to end up in Buffalo with Chan Gailey. I mean Gailey, Vick, and possibly Terrell Owens (if he’s back in Buffalo next year) deserve each other. Gailey fancies himself an offensive genius and since he had a modicum of luck with Slash in Pittsburgh, he should relish the idea of trying to be the first guy in the NFL to figure out how to REALLY utilize Vick. I mean when you think about it, Vick and Reggie Ball may be the same guy. You never seen both of them in the same place at the same time, they both run all over the field and have/had erratic arms.

Vick would be an ideal fit for the Vikings. He has a strong arm, his accuracy, dispite some of you haters, is better than any QB in the league, save Manning. With their receivers and Adrian Peterson (hope to improve on his ball handling skills), Vick would make the Vikings a powerful force in the NFC. They would practically own the NFC.

You people ask why Schultz and Bradley keep writing about the Great Mike Vick? Because Vick is the best qb we’ve ever had in this town and they believe that Vick is going to succeed, and deep down you people know it also. Vick actually worked with a great coaching staff that helped him with his accuracy. I could tell that his footwork was better/changed and the throws that he made were beautiful and right on the money. I honestly believe that Vick will be better than ever and it looks like several teams believe that also.

We all know that Vick took his otherworldly talents for granted….there’s nothing like a player that has been humbled and has something to prove. Whatever team signs Vick will be lucky to have him.

I told you people that Vick would shine again…looks like I was right again…….just like I was when I predicted that his breakout would come against the Falcons….2tds…and that he would have an impact in the playoffs…….a 76yd pass right on the money for a touchdown that seems to have gotten him a starting qb job, lol.

Like I’ve always said. The Great Mike Vick Has Returned.

When you are one game from the Super Bowl you don’t take 3 steps backward and hire Vick. Every Gm knows how important the QB position is in the NFL. It is a QB league. If you can’t think on your feet and be the smartest man on the field you will not win. PERIOD! Work ethic is also necessary to lead your team. (see J. Russell, Oak) If you can’t inspire your teammates they will turn on you in a heart beat. He deserves a second chance. But his second chance is as a 2nd team/wildcat type QB. Nothing more and maybe less.

First off, the ‘Aints didn’t win- the Vikings lost. The Vikes pushed them up and down the field all day. Indy will crush them like they did the J-E-T-S-JETS.

Secondly, Favre was obviously the missing piece for an already talented team. He truly is the greatest QB to step on the field, regardless if you love him or hate him. He’s still in the top three today, and probably will stay there despite being a member of the AARP.

Thirdly, Vick won’t go to Minnesota. The MN management hates thugs, and Vick is a thug that can’t pass.

Lastly, if Favre comes back, Minnesota will be my pick to win next year. They have a very good team with a tiny amount of wrinkles to work out. Peterson will learn to hold the ball, and Ziggy will turn Childress into a Eunich if he even thinks about making play calls like he did at the end of the the Saints game. Their coach lost the game, not the players.

PS Quit whining cheese heads. Your Offensive line is about 5 players away from giving Mr. Rogers the protection he’ll need to turn the Pack into an elite team like the Colts, Saints or Vikings.Cancerous feelings will haunt you forever because you let the greatest QB of all time go to work for your most hated enemy. I am and will always be against Vick. I used to work at the Peninsula SPCA in Newport News Virginia and have seen first hand some of Vicks dogs come in. These poor animals were all chewed up, smaller usually female pitt-bulls that would cower in fear over any sound.

Sadly branded as fight dogs they were never allowed to be adopted and were always put down. These beautiful loving animals were tortured from almost birth and knew nothing but pain and agony.

Vick is a coward. Vick is a liar. Vick is a sadistic killer who only shows remorse when the cameras are rolling and it helps his bank account.

I am so incredibly tired about hearing about Vick. He’s a second string QB who’s talent was fading even before his years away from the game. He can look brilliant, fast, exciting during one brief moment in a game – as can a 3rd string special teams player who recovers a fumble and runs it back for a TC. However, give Vick a complete season as a starting QB now and you’ll see a QB with faded talent, limited respect for anyone, a huge ego, and a NFL team with a solid 4 and 12 record.

Jeff, you’re better than this (or maybe not?). You’re saying that Vick may go to Minnesota because he’s had some of his best moments against them? How does that make sense? Are you saying there’s something special about the Metrodome? Or that he likes playing against the Vikings’ defense? In that case, I guess he’d have a lot of success during practice.

And his arm would pair well with Minnesota’s receivers? Yeah, no kidding. So would Turk Schonert’s. So would mine.

C’mon, Jeff.

I certainly don’t expect Vick to end up with the Vikings.

“HA HA HA”

It’s obvious you are not an Owner or Gm and I’m sure you don’t get paid for being intelligent :)

Give it up people – Vick here to STAY :)

The man only played 2-6 snaps per game and he was ALL OVER the Headlines.

Next season he will be a starter and I know that is eating you people up and in the meantime, you still have your “New Face” who is still looking for that 1st playoff win…………….3 YEARS LATER :)

First off, Jeff, please tell me you’re not buying the Brett Favre retirement talk. He’ll waffle back and forth until after two a days, and then he’ll return, tearfully, to the Vikes and throw their plans up in the air…again. Funny how he waits until after the worst part of camp to decide. What a jerk…Brett, not you Jeff.

Jeff,

For the one millionth time, Vick is not an NFL caliber Quarterback. He is simply a short, fast guy who can throw a long, tight spiral with perhaps the poorest accuracy in NFL history coupled with the IQ of a door knob.

Why is this so hard for you and others to grasp?

Schultz: First, Favre will return. Give him 4-6 months for his body to heal and he will return. He doesn’t want to go out on an INT again. (By the way, how many times do you have to see a movie before you know how it ends?)

If by some miracle, Favre does not return, Vick would be an upgrade in Minnesota over T. Jackson and Sage R. Vick would also be an upgrade over whatever they have in St. Louis and the current started in Buffalo.

Fact is, there are a number of mediocre starting QBs in the NFL and Mike Vick could probably beat them all out.

Didn’t VICK already get tried, convicted and served his sentence? Oh well, just asking?

He is one of the most explosive and exciting players to ever be in the NFL. As you know in his days, he electrified the crowds around the country. When I was in Houston for vacation they wore VICK jerseys and also in the Jacksonville, Fla are too.

If he is healthy and can be hired by a team he should play and the fans that “still hating” can just watch the Detroit vs Kansas game.

53.7 career completion percentage and 46.2 completion percentage this season in a league where the average is above 60%.

Yep, Vick is more accurate than anyone other than Manning and his throws this season were right on the money. Oh wait, let me guess his percentage is low just because of drops just like it always was, right?

Vick is a great quarterback regardless of what you want to say. Assuming Lee Evans and Terrell Owens are sufficiently successful at catching deep threat and screen passes next year, the Bills should seriously consider Vick because it would allow them to use their draft picks to build up their OL and their defense (even further) because they are a franchise in serious need of some rebuilding, and Vick is a perfect fit. McNabb will go to the Vikings once his contract is out simply because the opportunity to work with Brad Childress again would be a dream come true, and the Eagles would finally be able to put Kolb somewhere (considering he threw for 300+ yds. twice this season).

Why are you guys so angry at Vick? He isn’t the one starting or writing the rumors :)

- Jimmy Johnson says Carolina needs him.

- ESPN thinks Buffalo needs him.

- Rumors to Minnesota.

- Last week the rumor was for him to replace Warner.

- The rumor to St. Louis.

- The rumor to the Rams.

I can go on and on, but my question remains…………

“Why are you guys upset with Vick”?

He is not starting the rumors?

I mean if he is the terrible quarterback that you guys claim, then why are so many teams interested in him?

Why are so many networks starting the rumors :)

You guys should be more concerned with how the Saints, who finished in last place in 2008, has leap frogged the Falcons in 2009.

I think you should be taking a LONG look at your own quarterback before you try and analyze a former player. :)

I will become an outspoken ring leader to fight against that—that dog killing ……. should never have been allowed to play ball again ANYWHERE. He should still BE IN JAIL! I’m delighted to hear all the talk about him not being any good though! I really don’t think Brett would use some of the language that is on here & doubt it was him! He is a GREAT QB & it’s too bad our defense let him down last night. We were all hoping they could make it to the Super Bowl & he could be proud HE got them there but he needed more help than he got from the defense! The Saints played dirty & several fouls/calls were missed by the ref’s, WHY? Don’t think Saints deserve to win SB & I will NOT be yelling for them! Just because of Katrina they should win ??, NO WAY!! What brainless wonders build a city below sea level in the first place???

Carolina isn’t going to take a quarterback who wants a big contract any time soon given how much they shelled out on Jake Delhomme. They should concentrate on a porous OL and building their defense so they could be a ground-and-pound team with two of the best halfbacks in the NFC.

Vick deserves to start for another team but, i doubt the Vikings would make a deal to get him when Favre could come back (after much flip flopping of course). Vick showed some flashes of brilliance when we ran our version of the Wildcat because opposing defenses didn’t know if he was running the ball, Handing off to Warwick Dunn, or passing it to an open receiver (usually Crumpler). Wherever he goes i wish him well (Until he plays us again). GO FALCONS!!!

First of all, Michael Vick most certainly can still read defenses and throw accurately in the NFL, just as he used to in Atlanta with regularity.

As for the Vikings, I honestly don’t think they have given up on Tarvaris Jackson. Even if they do bring in a veteran, I think they will give Jackson a fair shot at competing for the starting job. Don’t forget, Jackson was Brad Childress’ draft pick, and they may be inclined to give Jackson a second chance after seeing how Vince Young responded to being promoted after his benching. Considering how similar in styles Vick and Jackson are, I would think they would rather have a traditional pocket passer to compete with him. That said, I would love to see Vick go to Minnesota, where he would have a great offensive line, a great running game, and very good receivers to work with.

Vick Supporter – So when you said, “Vick actually worked with a great coaching staff that helped him with his accuracy. I could tell that his footwork was better/changed and the throws that he made were beautiful and right on the money”, you meant you saw this change and improvement just in the last few games of the season and on a few select plays. That quote sounded to me like you were talking about the entire season, but now we are on the same page with regards to that.

I always like when the Vick lovers point out the poor coaching he got in Atlanta and the good coaching he got in Philadelphia this year. While I agree the coaching in Atlanta was very weak, it seems like you are already setting up an excuse if/when Vick fails. Can’t you always blame it on a coaching staff? Honestly, it is just a matter of opinion coming from fans like us whether or not someone is getting good coaching or not.

I cant imagine any semi competitive team taking any chance on Vick as a starter. He wont end up in Arizona or Minnesota. He might end up in Buffalo if they are just looking for an extra publicity stunt outside of TO. You just cant put the fate of your team in the hands of a guy like him. It would be insane.

Najeh Davenpoop

January 25th, 2010
5:31 pm

I’m no insider or anything obviously, but just based on what teams have been known to do in the past and how they may pursue this offseason I’d rank the teams who might get Vick in order of likelihood like this:

1. Buffalo
2. Carolina
3. Washington
4. St. Louis
5. Arizona (if Warner retires)
6. Kansas City
7. Oakland
8. Minnesota (if Favre retires)
9. Denver (if Orton leaves as a free agent)
10. San Francisco

It should be obvious, but Arizona or Minnesota would be the best landing spots for Vick. Oakland and Buffalo would be the worst, both due to organizational disarray and strength of division. He’d have the best chance to make the biggest impact in St. Louis — despite their terrible record this year, they could easily make a big jump in the standings next year if they add Vick, Ndamukong Suh, and a couple of other impact rookies, due to their weak division and the fact that a dome favors Vick’s speed-based game. Carolina would also be a place he could instantly make a huge impact, since that team already has a lot of necessary pieces to be a playoff team, although of course it would be tough for people who like Vick and the Falcons to pull for him if he plays for a division rival.

davinpoop i read your list and it needs to be smaller. 1. buffalo, i dont see a franchise trying to rebuild completely going to risk it on this guy. 2. carolina, maybe this one, if john fox stays here. they would be a really good running attack if vick still has enough gas left in the tank, remember “rushing” qbs dont get better with age. 3. washington, not gonna happen with mike shannahan there. 4. st. louis, maybe here, i dont much about the area of the fans nd how much they would welcome a dog killer into this town, they need ticket sales like jacksonville does( who i see taking tebow before vick) so maybe them. 5. arizona, if warner retires it doesnt matter theyve been coaching up matt lienert to take over for him and he was a high draft pick so i dont see them giving up on him just yet. 6. kansas city, well seeing how they gave matt castle a huge pay check for numerous years, and they whole new “new england” style staff they have in place..no way not here. 7. oakland, always a chance a player can go here to die, they can have him. in fact we should have traded him to get randy moss and the #1 over all pick in the 2007 draft, and we still had matt schaub, but in hindsight we may still be stuck with patrino and that would suck. 8. minn, they owner wont let that happen and tj is already there and hes younger. 9. denver, thats laughable man..are you kidding me… josh mcdanials wouldnt do that to his team, vick dont fit in denver. 10 san fran. another case where the owner and the town itself wont allow vick to come here.. the stuck up snobs and hippis in san fran hate vick. so maybe, car., st louis, or oakland

“PAY ATTENTION TO NUMBER 7″

Top-10 Brett Favre Blunders
by Tim Furious

Those of you who had the Vikings +165 to win the NFC Championship on Sunday are going to remember Brett Favre for throwing the game away in the final minute of regulation as much as you’ll relive his insanely resilient performance to gut it out. We all know that he’s amassed milestones, won over hearts and had plenty of memorable performances. Yet the 2009-10 NFC Championship game was a cruel reminder to Favre’s backers that he’s been as deplorable as he’s been delightful.

10. Lambeau Opener in 2006 Against Bears

It’s not he biggest loss of his career, but 2006 was the beginning of the “Will He Won’t He Retirement Tour That Never Ends”. Favre opened the game with just five passes for 70 yards and tossed two picks in the second half to lose the game 0-26. So why is this a big deal? It’s the only shutout that Brett Favre ever endured when he lasted the whole game.

9. His Entire 2005 Season

Every legend is allowed one bad season, but this was one for the ages. Brett’s Packers won just four games that season, while Favre threw for 3,881 yards, 18 touchdowns a career high 29 interceptions. It was his lowest overall season quarterback rating at just 70.9 though it wasn’t without its excuses. Javon Walker, Bubba Franks and Ahman Green, the team’s best offensive weapons, were all on the shelf with various injuries and Favre’s offensive line had lost two key players in Marco Rivera and Mike Wahle.

8. Five Picks Against Cincinnati In 2005

The Packers were just 1-5 SU at this point and in desperate need of a victory. Brett connected on 26-of-39 passes in this game, but if you include the five interceptions that landed in the hands of Bengals’ defenseman, he has 31! Each time the Packers looked like they were going to stage a road upset over the 6-1 SU Bengals, Favre gave the ball away. Tragically, the Packers lost 14-21 and on the final play of the game Favre scrambled past the line of scrimmage by about five yards…then tried to pass the ball forward. But hey, I bet had a blast doing it! The fun never ends with Brett Favre!

7. NFC Wild Card Upset Against Vick’s Falcons

With Michael Vick as a rookie quarterback in the 2003 Wild Card Playoffs, nobody gave him a chance in hell of going in to Lambeau and upsetting the heavily favored Packers. Then the Falcons put up a 24-0 lead going in to the half and the crowd turned to Brett to keep their undefeated home playoff record intact.

Brett opened the second half with a brilliant touchdown drive…followed by six possessions that involved four turnovers, two of which belonged to Brett in the form of a fumble and a pick. At this point in his career, it was impossible to teach an old dog like Brett new tricks in the post season which makes it ironic that he’d be upset by the puppy assassinating Vick.

6. Six Picks Against Rams in 2002 Playoffs

Brett has always had that magical knack for fooling us in to thinking that he could throw a ball right through Mt. Everest or concuss a charging rhino with his grenade launching arm and boyish grin. So when Brett was matched up against the vaunted Greatest Show on Turf, led by destined hall of famer Kurt Warner, there were those that thought Brett could somehow pull this one out of his khaki shorts. Instead of a victory, Favre gave the Packers’ fans six interceptions, three of which were returned for scores.

5. 2008 Jets Slam in to Interception Mountain

At the time we had no idea that Eric Mangini was holding out on us concerning Brett’s torn bicep. But in the final five games of the season, with the Jets holding on to an 8-3 SU record, Brett’s gun slinging charm wasn’t enough to bully them in to the playoffs. The Jets finished 1-4 SU and Brett piled up just two touchdowns completely offset by 9 interceptions the final five games of the season.

4. 2007-08 NFC Championship Against Giants

In Brett’s final game as a Packer, and with his final pass in the green and gold, the NFC Championship game went to overtime after Mason Crosby was able to nail a field goal to tie the game at twenty apiece. Green Bay got the ball off the coin flip, and in his first and only pass of extra time, Favre shot a pass straight to cornerback Cory Webster. The Giants never gave the ball back and booted a 47-yarder to win the game. Sound familiar?

3. Laying Down for Strahan in 2001

In a wildly contested NFL record, Michael Strahan edged the season sack record of 22.0 by Mark Gastineau by “sacking” Favre. In fact, Favre basically sat on the ground so his buddy could steal the record from the former New York Jet. Some defend this by saying that Favre didn’t want to get blasted by a viscious Strahan hit, but he was hardly in harms way of getting blind sided and this is also a quarterback who was renowned for his scrambling ability. It was less of a sack and more of Favre bending over so that Strahan could score a reach around and wiggle in to the record books.

2. “I’m Retiring…Just Kidding!”

You’ve all been there…twice. It’s nothing I want to relive, although I may be forced to this summer. We were bludgeoned over the head with articles documenting his greatest moments and his staggering career achievements. Then we were smothered with reports of the “Will He, Won’t He?” variety. Now it’s just the Retirement Tour that never ends, kind of like Jay Leno’s but with less poor comedy.

At this point, however, it’s impossible to say that Favre doesn’t deserve the chance to think about it. Sure he practically held the Vikings and Jets at gunpoint while he waffled on retiring, but his performance this season was one of his best. He’s one of the greatest quarterbacks that ever lived, and I’m not entirely sure that “Team Tavaris” has any active members other than his mother. Still…it’s annoying.

1. Brett Tosses Fatal Pick Against Saints

Brett was stuffed in to the turf of the Superdome a billion times in this game, and got back up every time like he was starring in his own rendition of Rocky. Despite costly fumbles, the Vikings were in range to upset the Saints on their own turf and with the Vikings in field goal range, Favre scrambled out of the pocket on third down with less than a minute to go.

You could hear all of Minnesota screaming, “THROW IT AWAY! PLEASE FOR THE LOVE GOD, THROW IT AWAY!”. You could almost hear Green Bay’s jilted fans chuckling to themselves, “Here it comes…”

And it did.

Favre needlessly tried to force a pass across his body to Sidney Rice, that was picked off and sealed the fate of the Vikings who were unable to stave off elimination by the Saints in overtime.

How does this rank as the worst blunder in a career that spanned 19-years? Because of the ramifications. He had survived being raped by Saints’ defenders throughout the game, and the Vikings somehow kept the score close despite a brutal amount of giveaways. He didn’t need to throw that pass. He didn’t need to be a hero. In a season where he had taken deliberate measures to avert making mistakes, throwing just 7 interceptions all season, Favre made the dumbest decision of all at the worst time possible.

I think it’s great that MVick is candidate for QB at Vikings, hey why not, a 40 year old couldn’t get them to the superbowl. I can see it now, finally a team with a running QB to go with a pro bowl running back, and that coach had so much success coaching Favre, thing what he could do with the mild mannered Vick. I’ll say it now, Superbowl, can’t miss, might as well not even play the games, they will win them all, nobody else has a chance. Just in case all you Vick-haters do not recongnize this quote, this is the dialogue between the two Viking radio broadcasters during the Vikings last offensive play in regulation (and the game for that matter). I’m sure shortly after the game, they talked well into the break of dawn about how an offense of AP and Vick could easily advance the ball 5 more yard to set up for a game-winning 45 yard field goal.
Don’t think for a moment that wise Viking fans aren’t POed at ol’ gunslinging Favre throwing towards a receiver who WAS NOT EVEN OPEN! A QB WHO CAN SUCK UP HIS GUNSLINGING PRIDE AND RUN FOR SEVEN YARDS AND GET OUT OF BOUNDS.. LAST I CHECKED, VICK CAN DO THAT!!

Wow, this is a really funny comment section.

Someone made a good point about the Vikings sordid past. The love boat cruises. Korey Stringer dying from heat exhaustion. Denny Green being forced out, then Mike Tice, showing up at practice in full pads, and being caught in scandal for padding his wallet. I have to feel a bit for this franchise, they are like the NY Jets (western branch) in getting close and having some bad luck.

So, in that context, many of us fans think it might make sense to pick Micheal Vick up.

But as a fan of the Falcons since they drafted Vick (I was born in the same town as Vick, go figure!), I will say he is one of the hardest players in the league to figure out.

At times, he would make absolutely sensational plays where the defense was forced to choose between defending the pass or defending Vick’s runs. Just when I thought maybe he had “figured it out” and was making progress towards becoming a real NFL passer, he got caught for dogfighting and his football life came to a temporary end.

Here’s what I knew about Vick BEFORE he got caught for dogfighting… that Vick’s mind was NOT ON FOOTBALL. I never saw the football intelligence with Vick, the maturation process that’s supposed to happen after he’s had a few years of film study. He just seemed not to be interested.

Maybe that’s what happens when you run really fast and you’re drafted #1 overall, and given the highest salary of any player in NFL at that time. Or when your college offense basically consists of you running around and inventing plays, which is what made Vick famous at Va Tech.

Maybe now that he’s had it all taken away once, he’s interested in football. But, even before all of this, it was debatable whether he was an asset or a liability on the field.

My final verdict? Micheal Vick is Joey Harrington with speed. He’s Brad Smith, except not as smart, with a fumbling problem. He’s got a strong arm, but he’s not a 3rd running back, or a wide receiver, or any of that stuff.

Buffalo needs to sell some tickets. Terrell Owens and Micheal Vick, the circus of the absurd, maybe we’ll see that next year. :-)

To get more African-American fans to come to the game, the Falcons should pay vick a lot of money to come back to Atlanta—matt ryan will not do much with the falcons and he gets hurt a lot. Arthur Blank should offer Vick $5-$10 mil to come back and that will bring a lot of his fans back to atlanta.

For the one millionth time, Vick is not an NFL caliber Quarterback. He is simply a short, fast guy who can throw a long, tight spiral with perhaps the poorest accuracy in NFL history coupled with the IQ of a door knob.

Why is this so hard for you and others to grasp?

Just damn, Now I will have to get a new jersey. It was 1/2 black and 1/2 green, now I will have to get purple in there some where. I know I can keep the seven white with purple prison stripes. That should cover all bases.

Too funny, Vick is such a great ASSet, yet the Eagles don’t wont him? Hmm I wonder why.

I would find it pretty funny if a team like Minnesota who has a similar QB in Tarvaris Jackson would take another one in Michael Vick. Isn’t that the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Here is a fact for everyone to face: The ONLY reason the Falcons had to draft a QB, who happened to turn out to be Matt Ryan, was because Vick threw away his career in Atlanta and the tens of millions of dollars the franchise still had yet to pay him. How anyone can tear down Ryan and build up Vick at the same time is beyond me, but I guess blind racism (on both sides, I’ll grant you) never makes much sense.

Despite playing in the west coast offense for his last few years in the league, I do not think that it is the best fit for Michael Vick. (Note that the Vikings made the playoffs last season without Farve.) Some of my friends and I thought that he was a better fit for Dan Reeves’ offensive system than the west coast offense. If it were up to me, Vick would be playing in a more vertical offense. Heck, it is just my opinion and me.

Vick will land somewhere for sure but who could rely on him as the franchise QB? I don’t think that even Al Davis would put all of his eggs in this basket, look at where it got Blank, some of them maybe but I don’t see any owner trusting his first string QB money on Vick. Look, I know that there is a segment of Vick supporters that thought he walked on water then and now. I saw it live when Reeves was still bringing him along slowly and had to hear the cascade of boos when he platooned him, standing O’s when he bounced out of the pocket and gained a couple of yards. Laughed heartily at one of the blinded Vick athletic supporters above with this gem “He has a strong arm, his accuracy, dispite some of you haters, is better than any QB in the league, save Manning.” This is obviously someone who never watched him play, or Favre, or Brees, or Brady….

His strength was his cat-like quickness and word is he’s lost a step. He is best suited as a role player much like he was this year but perhaps with an OC that is more inclined to do Wildcats and even employ him as a throwing halfback. There are too many minuses to make him your starting QB both mentally and physically. You can’t discount the show business side of the NFL however and the money. Purple number 7 jerseys would sell like hot cakes but after hemming and hawing and playing the prima donna Favre will return after the mostly successful season he just had and Vick wouldn’t be a fit in Minnesota anyway. A Raiders number 7 jersey would sell even better and I don’t think his stock is up enough to get the big bucks, certainly more than the million for this past season, but Al Davis could get a reasonable price here on a guaranteed draw.

“I have to agree with MCook” on this one.

However, Vick is done in Atlanta because why would he want to play for an organization that has a 44 year losing mentality, when winning organizations are knocking on his door.

Vick put this sorry franchise on the map and in just one game (Dec 6) he brought it down again. They are more happy with “Non-Playoff” 9-7 seasons, when other teams like Baltimore, Philly, Minnesota, New England, etc call their seasons a FAILURE because they lost in the playoffs, while the Falcons fans are satisfied with a 72 million dollar CHOKE who can’t win a freakin playoff game.

Therefore MCook is right, Vick is done in Atlanta – but on Vick’s terms :)

A winning season is not a failure for a team who is re-building because of the previous QB life choices.

Again, this team was on a downward slump Vick’s last two seasons so in reality all worked out well.

No elite team is knocking down Vick’s door to get him. The elite in Philly brought your man in to be a 3rd string wildcat pawn who didn’t even do that well enough to get them to the big game. He was the same there as he was here. A few good plays now and then but could never lead the team to a 4th quarter come back win. By the way Matt has done that several times.

I love all this Vick drama . You all are as bad with it as Farve is about retiring . Let it go ……And for all of you people that are dogging Atlanta and saying Vick is better than Matt Ryan , you people do not watch football do you ? You watch your own team and talk crap about everyone elses and wonder why your team gets beat week in and week out . Watch some ESPN some time . Matt Ryan in half a season had better stats then Vick did in 5 years . I would rather have a Smart QB than one who would fumble , throw INT’s or running around in the back field getting sacked . He had two games back to back where he passed for over three hundred yards . Agianst the Steelers and the Bengals . He is lazy and he was the last one to practice and the first to leave . Poor work ethic . In the few times he was allowed in the game for Philly , did he do anything Heck did he even run one for over 25 ? spectacular ? Did one pass go over 25 yrds ? Someone will take him , And to those of you who talk crap about him , well i hope your team gets him ! Atlanta and Matt Ryan will prove themselves and all you haters will be on here talking more smack than a WWF superstar ….Get over it ! Good luck to Vick ! Quit hating haters ! He still making more money than you ! I don’t hate him but everything happens for a reason and we got a REAL QB in #2

Oh, and let me say this: I actually wish Matt Ryan was a better quarterback. If he was and actually won a couple of playoff games, the Vick talk would cease. But we have an average QB as our starter, and Vick came here and ran one and thrown for one. Meanwhile, our franchise QB couldn’t play.

That’s the problem. Now if Ryan comes out, lead the team to the playoffs without riding Michael Turner to glory, people will shut up about Vick. But my suspicion is that Vick is going start somewhere and lead them to the playoffs. If that happens and the playoffs doesn’t happen for the Falcons, that will be it. The only way Matt Ryan tamps down Vick talk is to win the Super Bowl.

THIS SEASON, BECAUSE OF INJURIES, PICKS BY RYAN, AND CHIP SHOT MISSED FG’S BY JASON ELAM, the Falcons failed miserably by going 9-7 and missing the playoffs. Ryan was a pick machine because his offensive line didnt give him enough protection. If we get an offensive lineman as big as former Chicago Bear William “The Refrigerator” Perry, Ryan will have enough time to find any receiver on the field, PLUS make as many cell phone calls as he wants to.

In fact Steve Young, current HOF’er said that Ryans Rookie season was played like a hall of famer. That is the highest amount of praise you can get from anyone. Think about this, there have been great college quarterbacks who never made it in the pros: two come to mind right away. Danny Wierrfel and Ryan Leaf. Both guys were tremendously talented in college and were destined for greatness, although neither made it in the pros. Just imagine how many more fumbles and ints he’d have had he been playing a full season at year one. Instead of sitting on the bench. He’d probably get booed so hard the “thug” would come out in him and he’d flip off the fans or something. :D

Doubt the Vikings will be looking for that in their starting QB. :P

Mike Smith: Matty…we need you to stretch the field. Our team can’t survive with your 10 yard passes.

Ryan: Coach, that’s all I got…but I can go yell at the linemen and get them riled up!! I’m a leader!!

Smith: Matt, we’re tired of you trying to “lead”, we need to WIN. You’re gonna cost me my job.

Ryan: Alrighty buddy!!

Smith: (Under breath) STFU Matt. When the defense is blitzing, can you please at least TRY to be mobile and buy some time so you can wind up your arm to complete a 20 yard pass?

Ryan: I can do that coach, but that’s my limit…can’t throw further than 25 yards.

Smith: (Under Breath) Damn I WISH WE HAD MIKE VICK. WE COULD BE WINNING RIGHT NOW…

Michael Vick would be the perfect guy to replace Favre on the Vikings roster. With their Recievers who can catch unlike Atlantas Vick would add to Minnesotas already amazing running game. Vick, Vikings, both Vs and purple #7 would be the Superbowl Champions.

Michael Vick is not the solution I envision to the Vikings long-term quarterback issue. I will not be happy if he suits up in purple. We have had no off-field trouble this season and I hope to keep it that way. There are plenty of hoodlum ball players out there and we don’t need them on this squad. I would rather go with T-Jack than Vick. But I would prefer neither.

Art: You lied in my face saying we could still fill the dome.

Dimitroff: Boss I thought the Vick fans were the minority.

Art: You dumb as hippy, I’m losing revenue every season now.

Dimitroff: Boss how was I to know Matt is the 2nd coming of Ryan Leaf?

Art: Your dumb azz told me Vick could easily be replace!

Dimitroff: Boss, but he gives good after loss press interviews.

Art: That Ozzie Newsome/Harbaugh/Flacco is making me look bad.

Dimitroff: Boss “back-to-back” playoff seasons is overrated.

Art: You better fix that sorry as CHOKE SONOFB_____!

Dimitroff: Boss, we already invested 72 million on him.

Art: That punk is a PICK MACHINE!

Nice summary here. You’re right, “Choke”, Ryan hasn’t eccomplished NEARLY as much as Mr. Vick.

Timeline of Michael Vick’s legal troubles

Compiled by The Daily Press (Newport News, Virginia)

Saturday, July 21, 2007

March 13, 2005: The Washington Post publishes a story in which a screener at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport says a companion of Michael Vick’s stole his watch from the security X-ray belt. The screener eventually got the watch back, and no charges were filed.

April 5, 2005: Vick is sued by a Georgia woman who claims he gave her herpes. The lawsuit also claimed Vick used the alias “Ron Mexico” when seeking treatment for the disease. On April 24, the woman agrees to an undisclosed settlement.

Nov. 26, 2006: Vick flips off booing fans in Atlanta after a 31-13 loss to New Orleans. He later apologizes and donates $5,000 of his $10,000 fine from the National Football League to the family of an Atlanta firefighter who died in a Thanksgiving fire. He gives the other $5,000 to an organization that helps single mothers become homeowners.

Jan. 18, 2007: Vick has a water bottle seized at the Miami International Airport that contains a substance in a hidden compartment. After testing, the substance was found not to contain drugs, and no charges were filed.

April 20: Davon Boddie, Vick’s cousin, was arrested in the parking lot of Royal Suite, a nightclub in Hampton, Virginia, after a police dog alerted its handler that marijuana was in Boddie’s vehicle. Boddie was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

April 25: Vick misses a scheduled appearance to lobby for increased after-school program funding on Capitol Hill when he misses a connecting flight in Atlanta.

April 25: Investigators search the Surry County property owned by the Atlanta Falcons quarterback and find 66 dogs, some injured and scarred, and items associated with dogfighting.

April 26: Vick says he’s “never” at the property, a two-storey house on 15 acres. His cousin, Davon Boddie, lives there.

May 9: Vick puts the Surry property on the market asking $350,000, less than half of its assessed value, and it’s under contract in less than a day.

May 21: Investigators meet with Surry County Commonwealth’s Attorney Gerald Poindexter to discuss evidence. They leave the meeting without comment.

June 19: Vick pulls out of a scheduled appearance at the 2007 Colonial All-Pro Football Camp at William and Mary, a month after cancelling his own youth football camp. Vick cites a scheduling conflict in cancelling the camp, which was to be held June 30 at Christopher Newport University.

July 6: Federal agents return to the Surry property and are seen digging and removing evidence.

July 17: Vick is indicted on a charge of conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and to sponsor a dog in an animal-fighting venture.

Vick likely to have many suitors in 2010
Posted: January 27th, 2010 | NFL.com Staff | Tags: Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Michael Vick, Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, St. Louis Rams

As I detailed when QB Michael Vick signed with the Eagles, this was always set up to be a one-year marriage, as by the very nature of the contract. The Eagles won’t be picking up the big contract option for 2010, according to sources, or at least do not plan to. They will explore trade options for Vick during the window they have to do so in March before deciding whether or not to pick up his option.

Sources close to Vick fully anticipate him playing elsewhere in 2010, and say he is intent on being a starter if at all possible. Such opportunities should arise. Clubs to keep a close eye on include Buffalo, St. Louis, Carolina, Oakland and Jacksonville. Those teams are in the market for QB help, and many have struggled to sell tickets and attract attention in recent years, with their smaller-market status.

Vick’s cause will be helped as well by the weak free-agent class of quarterbacks — Daunte Culpepper could be the class of that group, for instance — as well as an upcoming draft without prospects who seem ready to play right away. Whether teams opt to wade in heavily for Vick on the trade market remains to be seen, but if he hit the market as a free agent, league sources expect at least a half-dozen or so teams to have legitimate interest.

To Vick and Vikings:

Your comment “With their Recievers who can catch unlike Atlantas” is bogus.

Roddy White’s careers stats:

YEAR G Rec Yds Avg Long TD QB
2005 16 29 446 15.4 54 3 VICK
2006 16 30 506 16.9 55 0 VICK
2007 16 83 1202 14.5 69 6 HARRINGTON/REDMAN
2008 16 88 1382 15.7 70 7 RYAN
2009 16 85 1153 13.6 90 11 RYAN

Looks like Vick can’t even pass as well as two guys that are clipboard carriers. Roddy can catch jsut fine with a real QB throwing him the ball…but of course, as soon as Vick puts on a Vikings jersey his inner passer will suddenly come out and blossom.

I mean, I was expecting you to refute the Roddy White stats or explain why Vick, ostensibly the best QB in the league in your opinion, and only being pursued by teams that finished 6-10, 1-15, 8-8, 5-11, and 7-9.

Face it man, that clock you hear ticking or the sun you see setting on the horizon, is Vick’s career as a quarterback in the NFL. I’m sure he would do OK as a special teamer or punt returner, though. There are open tryouts every year.

I dont know if some of you are old enough to remember the game show “Lets Make a Deal” with Monty Hall as the host from back in 70s. Most of you are acting as though Vick is a great qb with a long, bright future. Vick will be released by the Eagles during the offseason and his playing career will be over. But some of you act as though Vick has a choice of a) whats behind door#1 (continue playing with Eagles) b) whats behind door#2 (Vick gets resigned with the Falcons and gets traded straight up for Matt Ryan. But meanwhile, while all of this is going on, Vick comes out from behind the curtain and admits steroid use, which enabled Vick to run like a deer and break Bobby Douglas’ rushing recod of 1000 yards by a quarterback. GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN (TICKER) —Michael Vick began building his playoff resume with a historic win.

In his postseason debut, Vick passed for a touchdown and created havoc with his feet as the Atlanta Falcons rolled to a 27-7 NFC wild card victory over the Green Bay Packers, who suffered the first home playoff loss in franchise history.

The NFL’s youngest quarterback at 22, Vick outplayed three-time Most Valuable Player Brett Favre, who had been 35-0 at Lambeau Field when the game-time temperature was 34 degrees or less. Saturday’s temperature was 28 and the contest was played through light snow.

The Packers (12-5) also were 13-0 all-time at home in the playoffs, including an 11-0 mark at storied Lambeau Field. They were the only unbeaten team during the regular season with an 8-0 record.

None of that bothered the Falcons or Vick, who played mistake-free in his playoff debut.

Associated Press
GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Arizona Cardinals have consecutive home playoff victories — 61 years apart.

Kurt Warner opened with a 42-yard touchdown pass to Larry Fitzgerald and connected with Anquan Boldin on a 71-yard scoring play as the Cardinals beat Atlanta 30-24 Saturday before a raucous, towel-waving crowd.

Fast Facts

• The Cardinals won a playoff game for the third time in their history and first time since 1998.

• Kurt Warner was 19-of-32 for 271 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. It was Warner’s eighth career playoff game overall and his fifth throwing for at least two scores.

• Matt Ryan was the seventh rookie quarterback to start a playoff game since the merger (the Ravens’ Joe Flacco will be the eighth). Ryan was 26-of-40 for 199 yards, two scores and two picks. His 26 completions, 40 attempts and 199 pass yards were the most by a rookie signal caller in his postseason debut since the merger.

• Arizona outgained the Falcons 174-61 in the second half (357-250 for the game).

It was the franchise’s first home playoff game since the then-Chicago Cardinals beat Philadelphia to win the NFL championship in 1947.

“A lot of people coming into this game said we were the worst playoff team ever to get in,” Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “… I think we rallied around that.”

Atlanta rookie Matt Ryan was intercepted twice, was tackled in the end zone for a safety and fumbled the ball away on a botched handoff. That fumble was returned 27 yards by Antrel Rolle 52 seconds into the second half to put Arizona ahead for good.

BOX SCORE: Panthers 28, Falcons 19

“No huddle is controlled chaos,” said Smith, who tripled Carolina’s touchdown total by wide receivers coming into the game. “You’ve got defense running around and they don’t know what they’re doing. The no huddle is really easy and simple.”

While Delhomme went turnover-free for the third straight game following 13 interceptions in his first six, it was a difficult day for Ryan and the Falcons (5-4). First, they lost running back Michael Turner to a second-quarter sprained ankle after he already rushed for 111 yards. Then kicker Jason Elam and Ryan stymied their late comeback hopes with key fourth-quarter mistakes.

Ryan, throwing too high much of the day, had two more interceptions He’s at 12, one more than all of his stellar rookie season.

Only the 1991 Saints began a season with as many wins.

”We did a lot of things well and yet we did a lot of things that made it close at the end,” coach Sean Payton said. ”I’m excited to win though. I’m excited to win this game and get to 7-0. It was an important game against a division team and I’m proud of our players. They fought.”

Greer’s touchdown was the Saints’ fifth score on an interception this season, tying a single-season franchise mark set in 1998. Tracy Porter also had an interception on the Saints 1-yard line on a pass tipped by Jonathan Vilma in the fourth quarter, preserving a 28-24 lead after Thomas’ fumble had given Atlanta the ball on the Saints 35.

Atlanta’s Matt Ryan was intercepted three times, his third consecutive game with at least two picks.

Eagles roll as Vick accounts for two touchdowns in return to Atlanta

Dec. 6, 2009
CBSSports.com wire reports

ATLANTA — When Michael Vick finally made it back to the end zone, a place he hadn’t been in more than three years, he was torn about what to do.

A Lambeau Leap? Nah, that would’ve taken too much effort.

COMMENTARY
Vick’s redemption tour hits high note with return to Atlanta

Tell Pete your opinion!

Instead, he wanted to reward one of those fans who cheered his return to Atlanta. Only one problem — when he flipped the ball toward the stands, it got caught up in the net going up for the extra point.

Not to worry. Everything else went right for Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

Back in the city he once ruled, Vick put up a pair of touchdowns — one running, the other passing, both of them his first since 2006 — and basked in the cheers of the Georgia Dome crowd as the Eagles dominated the short-handed Falcons 34-7.

“It was as loud as it gets in the Dome,” said Vick, who teared up on the bus ride over to the stadium. “I heard the chants all through the stadium and it sent chills down my spine. They were just letting me know that people still appreciate what I’ve done.”

Reid won’t comment on possible extension

He was a three-time Pro Bowler with the Falcons and one of the most dynamic players in the NFL before his stunning downfall for dogfighting. After serving prison time and losing two seasons in the prime of his career, he’s trying to rebuild it all as a backup in Philadelphia.

Vick ran for a 5-yard touchdown in the third quarter, his first since Oct. 15, 2006. With the game out of hand, he slipped a 5-yard scoring pass to Brent Celek early in the fourth, his first TD throw since that final season with the Falcons.

“It couldn’t have happened at a better time,” Vick said.

Some of you are still misguided about the difference between Mike Vick vs. Matt Ryan. I will clear it up for ALL of you. Mike Vick is like the star of the series “Punky Brewster”. He was a punk for everything it was worth. He greeted his fans and saluted them by flipping the bird and giving them the middle index finger [with both hands], “graciously thanking them for their support”. The commissioner fined Vick $10,000 for that act of love towards his fans. Matt Ryan won the OFFENSIVE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AWARD for being the BEST ROOKIE IN THE NFL. Mike Vick spent Ryans rookie season in a federal penitentiary (according to Vick) playing on the prison football team and keeping in great shape. The only problem with that is that Levenwoth Kentucky has no such team (which meant the lying for Vick continued even behind prison walls). Matt Ryan orchestrated a legendary drive with only :11 seconds left against the Chicago Bears beating them in the closing seconds. Vick meanwhile was getting sued by his creditors of whom he defaulted their loans. Ryan led his team to the playoffs in his rookie season. Vick meanwhile was getting sued for bankruptcy while losing ALL of his endorsement deals. Ryan WILL BE A CERTAIN FIRST BALLOT HALL OF FAMER while Vick will never be more than “wannabe” football bust who had enormous potential, but was too lazy and dumb to realize his true football genius.

Cory you’re right he had potential but I don’t think he really wanted to be a great QB once he got the money. His last two seasons was HORRIBLE and that’s an understatement. Do defend Vick as a great QB as Choke and VS try to do is insane. Then again I really don’t think they beleive Vick is all that. Most likely they are children trying to be funny.

Last year Matt Ryan threw 16tds to 11 ints and they acted like the guy was throwing it all over the field and on his way to breaking every Brett Favre passing record. He was called one of the top 5 QB’s coming in this year and what has he done. 13tds to 10ints and he looks antsy in the pocket. He is averaging 2 picks a game in his last four and looks like a rookie QB. I like him as player

So, how is that boycott the NFL because of Michael Vick movement going? How about the sentiment that everyone hates Brett Favre? When taking a look at the highest selling jerseys in the NFL at present, we stumble upon a more apt word in describing the two: Polarizing. Sure, there are plenty of people who loathe both players, but there are plenty on the other side of the fence. The numbers don’t lie.

Darren Rovell of CNBC.com has published a list of the top-20 selling jerseys at NFLShop.com from April 1 to August 28. Favre’s Vikings jersey is the top seller, and Vick’s Eagles top checks in at number four.

The rankings are especially staggering when you consider the short amount of time people have had to stock up on the jerseys of these two. Vick signed August 14 and Favre signed August 18. That means in two weeks (for Vick) or less (Favre), these two have pummeled the competition since April 1.

Sad………..just sad. To bad jersey sales don’t make a 3rd string QB a starter. I don’t care if he sales more jerseys than the intire league together he’s still a 3rd string QB.

Silly little jersey selling wildcat pawn giving up on his team 3rd string QB fan.

No matter how you spin it Matt is a starter and Vick is 3rd string at best.

If the UFL gave up on Vick he is in trouble.

Choke: its true that vick is #4 in jersey sales. But in the game of life Vick is dead last. No one would trade their life for Vicks because Vicks life is pathetic. He is a former jailbird and will end up back in jail in the not too distant future. Vick is and has always been a scandal waiting to happen. An investigation is now being done on Vick into possible steroid use. If Vick is guilty of that, depending on the logistics of when, where he used steriods and under what jurisdiction he was in, Vick may land himself back into the state penitentiary again. The book has not been closed on Vick and trouble will continue to find Vick as long as he lives.

It’s sad everyone seems intent on bashing both Favre, and Vick. First of all, farve’s interception at the end of that game was nothing more than the end of a whole string of bad outcomes…. I truly believe that his pick wouldn’t have mattered if the Vikes hadn’t fumbled 6 times that game, which I believe kept us from at least 1 more touchdown. Next, Vick is a solid player who gets the short end of the stick because people can’t get over his animal cruelty conviction. I admit h doesn’t have the kind of accuracy you see in other star quarterbacks, but he is still young, and i think could be a strong asset to the Vikes.

I hope Favre gives it one more season with us, but vick would be an adequate choice… behind McNabb… btw screw the Packers!

ATL Observer

Hmmm, wow, a perfect cross-posting of two players a lot of people have no “in-between” feelings on right now! :-p

1) For those who say “this is an Atlanta sports blog, why are you here?,” remember that these feeds typically get posted through Google News, so you’re going to get lots of “tourists.”

2) 85′ Bears made a good point, which is that if Rex Grossman can “lead” his team to a SB, then just about any NFL QB can. Minnesota has a great defense and a lot of offensive weapons. Everyone acts like they were dismal without Favre. But in fact, they won their division in ‘08 and they didn’t have Favre OR Percy Harvin then.

3) Favre won’t retire. This speculation will be moot.

4) There’s a 95% chance that Favre will put up MVP numbers in 2011. Also a 95% chance he’ll throw a boneheaded interception to end his team’s playoff run.

5) Vick defenders love to cite his marketability as if that’s what the hell we’re talking about. Bert Blyeven wasn’t one of the world’s most marketable baseball players…does that mean that I would have wanted Mark Fidrych over him? Yeah, we get it: Vick packs the stadium. But you don’t build a team going “let’s get the one guy that fills the seats.” You build a team saying “let’s build a winner and then it won’t matter who suits up, we’ll always fill the seats.”

A lot of fans hate the Steelers, but guess what? Their popularity isn’t beholden to one player. Fans of teams like that are absolutely laughing at the Vickolytes right now because they would have moved on. The moment you say “we gotta bring this guy back to fill the seats,” you may as well put on a big billboard that reads “I’M A GREAT BIG LOSER.”

6) Vick on the Vikings? Could work although it would require revamping the playbook. A Favre offense and a Vick offense: one of these things is not like the other. Vick’s not terribly accurate (spare me the “he got crisper in Philly” crap, he was 6-13 on pass attempts) but it would turn a team that’s already one of the fastest in the league into an even faster team. It’d be an all-out track meet. Defenses would huff-and-puff trying to keep up.

7) If I was the Vikings, I’d aim to get McNabb. He’d be the right fit, IMO.

Larry

Jeff,

For the one millionth time, Vick is not an NFL caliber Quarterback. He is simply a short, fast guy who can throw a long, tight spiral with perhaps the poorest accuracy in NFL history coupled with the IQ of a door knob.

Why is this so hard for you and others to grasp?

Larry, please shut up. Vick has accomplished more in Atlanta than any other QB before him. He will always have fans here.

The only reason some of you are sooooo negative about MV7 is becuase you know he may succeesd wherever he plays. Right now we have Mat Ice and I think he’s GREAT…but Mat did NOT improve this year and so we really don’t know how our QB situation will end up. I hope both have tremendous suceess becuase how can you be a real footblall fan and not like seeing MV7 play…KRAZY.

I certainly don’t miss seeing him in a Falcon’s uniform but I want to see him PLAY. Bottom MV7 is certainly better that at least 6 starting QBs right now. I hope he ends up in St. Louis because of the dome there…he’s much better in a dome. I truly believe he has matured and I want to see what a “PREPARED” MV7 can do.

I have been a Vikings fan most of my life. Even with that being the case,if the vikes were to sign vick like the rumors say, I would immediately stop watching them play! I would no longer consider myself a fan. Then I would stop buying Vikings merchandise(I am by no means keeping the team going by my purchases but I have bought very many items over the years). As a loyal fan for years I can’t believe that Minnesota could even for half a second consider vick to play for them. By his actions he has shown that he is not the type of person anyone would trust to build a team around. vick brought nothing but disgrace to the Atlanta Falcons who knew all to well that he needed to go as quickly as possible. He did not think about the poor dogs that died and fought and suffered through his lack of morality. He did not think about giving the dogs a chance at life,so why should vick have so many. Any other team can call on him all they want just not the Vikes,(MY VIKES)!
