Favre’s retirement could open door for Vick to Vikings

If Brett Favre decides to walk away again ...

040009_SPORTS_FBN-EAGLES-CO

... Michael Vick (or Donovan McNabb) may walk in.

Brett Favre is pondering retirement again, and for all we know that pondering might extend through the winter, through the spring, past the draft, past free agency and into summer and the start of training camp.

Should he step away (again) — and there are indications he will — don’t be surprised if the name Michael Vick comes up as a possible replacement.

Let’s start with Favre. Earlier in the postseason, he told ESPN’s Ed Werder,  “If you win, you go on. If you lose, you’re done, and for me, that could very well be my last game.” And just this morning, my pal Adam Schefter of the same network sent this on Twitter: “Let this be the first of hopefully very few Favre-Watch updates: Favre told ESPN’s Ed Werder it was ‘highly unlikely’ he’d play again.”

I know. We can’t know because even Favre doesn’t know, and even if Favre knows something at lunch, he may change his mind at dinner. And then back again at breakfast. But let’s operate on the unsafe assumption for now that he’s retiring.

The Vikings’ quarterback depth chart reads: Favre-Tarvaris Jackson-Sage Rosenfels. Jackson is an impending free agent and, while he says that he is open to staying with the team, you have to wonder about how the franchise views him, given the way they treated him through the romancing of Favre. If Favre doesn’t come back, there is no telling what direction the team will go.

Enter Vick: Minnesota was one of the teams believed to show early interest in Vick, until  the rumor finally was shot down by owner Zygi Wilf and coach Brad Childress (both of whom have truth issues). Vick had some of his best moments against the Vikings. He obviously doesn’t have Favre’s accuracy but his strong arm pairs well with receivers Sidney Rice, Percy Harvin and Bernard Berrian.

ESPN already is floating Vick-to-Minnesota in its “rumors” section this morning (requires Insiders subscription). Speculation also has Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb going to the Vikings, where he would be reunited with Childress (his former quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator with the Eagles).

Very few people believe Vick will be back with the Eagles. Other rumored destinations are Buffalo (needs a quarterback; owner is looking for a marketing tool), St. Louis (general manager Billy Devaney was with the Falcons and has kept in contact with Vick), Arizona (Kurt Warner may retire; Matt Leinart’s status is uncertain); Oakland (Al Davis: enough said) and Carolina (Jake Delhomme’s future is uncertain).

For what it’s worth, the Falcons play St. Louis, Arizona and Carolina next season, but not Minnesota, Buffalo or Oakland. Any thoughts on Vick in purple?

Vick will come back to atlanta for peanuts ($2-3 mil per year) so he would be a good backup QB to Ryan, who is hurt a lot. Plus, he would bring a lot of fans back to the Dome. Blank needs to get it down and get Vick back to the ATL.

At this point, the Vikings are used to an iron man at QB. I highly doubt they’ll take a 3rd string QB who wasn’t even tough enough to finish a full season until his 6th year. And that was in his prime.

Just imagine how many more fumbles and ints he’d have had he been playing a full season at year one. Instead of sitting on the bench. He’d probably get booed so hard the “thug” would come out in him and he’d flip off the fans or something. :D

Notice how he had so much poise holding that ball like a loaf a bread? A remarkable fumble! Against Detroit!! I’m soooo glad it’s all just a memory now.

Doubt the Vikings will be looking for that in their starting QB. :P

Mike Smith: Matty…we need you to stretch the field. Our team can’t survive with your 10 yard passes.

Ryan: Coach, that’s all I got…but I can go yell at the linemen and get them riled up!! I’m a leader!!

Smith: Matt, we’re tired of you trying to “lead”, we need to WIN. You’re gonna cost me my job.

Ryan: Alrighty buddy!!

Smith: (Under breath) STFU Matt. When the defense is blitzing, can you please at least TRY to be mobile and buy some time so you can wind up your arm to complete a 20 yard pass?

Ryan: I can do that coach, but that’s my limit…can’t throw further than 25 yards.

Smith: (Under Breath) Damn I WISH WE HAD MIKE VICK. WE COULD BE WINNING RIGHT NOW…

Michael Vick would be the perfect guy to replace Favre on the Vikings roster. With their Recievers who can catch unlike Atlantas Vick would add to Minnesotas already amazing running game. Vick, Vikings, both Vs and purple #7 would be the Superbowl Champions.

Michael Vick is not the solution I envision to the Vikings long-term quarterback issue. I will not be happy if he suits up in purple. We have had no off-field trouble this season and I hope to keep it that way. There are plenty of hoodlum ball players out there and we don’t need them on this squad. I would rather go with T-Jack than Vick. But I would prefer neither.

I also think Dimitroff had this conversation Art Blank:

Art: You little big hair punk I trusted you sorry butt.

Dimitroff: Sorry boss, I thought we could fix those 22 picks.

Art: You lied in my face saying we could still fill the dome.

Dimitroff: Boss I thought the Vick fans were the minority.

Art: You dumb as hippy, I’m losing revenue every season now.

Dimitroff: Boss how was I to know Matt is the 2nd coming of Ryan Leaf?

Art: Your dumb azz told me Vick could easily be replace!

Dimitroff: Boss, but he gives good after loss press interviews.

Art: That Ozzie Newsome/Harbaugh/Flacco is making me look bad.

Dimitroff: Boss “back-to-back” playoff seasons is overrated.

Art: You better fix that sorry as CHOKE SONOFB_____!

Dimitroff: Boss, we already invested 72 million on him.

Art: That punk is a PICK MACHINE!

Dimitroff: Boss, we will increase his 5 yard slants.

Art: STFU – Fix it now or you will be back kissing Belichick’s rings!

Choke: Yes that would be fantastic! I wonder what goes through Vicks mind when he’s called in to be a wildcat man?

VS: Don’t tell anyone I said this because I will smack your little bottom, but I bet he worries if he will fumble or throw an interseption.

Choke: Oh don’t say that. Ah……VS pass the jock strap I need another hit. sniff sniff Mmmmm that’s some good stuff.

Nice summary here. You’re right, “Choke”, Ryan hasn’t eccomplished NEARLY as much as Mr. Vick.

Timeline of Michael Vick’s legal troubles

Compiled by The Daily Press (Newport News, Virginia)

Saturday, July 21, 2007

March 13, 2005: The Washington Post publishes a story in which a screener at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport says a companion of Michael Vick’s stole his watch from the security X-ray belt. The screener eventually got the watch back, and no charges were filed.

April 5, 2005: Vick is sued by a Georgia woman who claims he gave her herpes. The lawsuit also claimed Vick used the alias “Ron Mexico” when seeking treatment for the disease. On April 24, the woman agrees to an undisclosed settlement.

Nov. 26, 2006: Vick flips off booing fans in Atlanta after a 31-13 loss to New Orleans. He later apologizes and donates $5,000 of his $10,000 fine from the National Football League to the family of an Atlanta firefighter who died in a Thanksgiving fire. He gives the other $5,000 to an organization that helps single mothers become homeowners.

Jan. 18, 2007: Vick has a water bottle seized at the Miami International Airport that contains a substance in a hidden compartment. After testing, the substance was found not to contain drugs, and no charges were filed.

April 20: Davon Boddie, Vick’s cousin, was arrested in the parking lot of Royal Suite, a nightclub in Hampton, Virginia, after a police dog alerted its handler that marijuana was in Boddie’s vehicle. Boddie was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

April 25: Vick misses a scheduled appearance to lobby for increased after-school program funding on Capitol Hill when he misses a connecting flight in Atlanta.

April 25: Investigators search the Surry County property owned by the Atlanta Falcons quarterback and find 66 dogs, some injured and scarred, and items associated with dogfighting.

April 26: Vick says he’s “never” at the property, a two-storey house on 15 acres. His cousin, Davon Boddie, lives there.

May 9: Vick puts the Surry property on the market asking $350,000, less than half of its assessed value, and it’s under contract in less than a day.

May 21: Investigators meet with Surry County Commonwealth’s Attorney Gerald Poindexter to discuss evidence. They leave the meeting without comment.

June 19: Vick pulls out of a scheduled appearance at the 2007 Colonial All-Pro Football Camp at William and Mary, a month after cancelling his own youth football camp. Vick cites a scheduling conflict in cancelling the camp, which was to be held June 30 at Christopher Newport University.

July 6: Federal agents return to the Surry property and are seen digging and removing evidence.

July 17: Vick is indicted on a charge of conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and to sponsor a dog in an animal-fighting venture.

Vick likely to have many suitors in 2010
Posted: January 27th, 2010 | NFL.com Staff | Tags: Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Michael Vick, Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, St. Louis Rams

As I detailed when QB Michael Vick signed with the Eagles, this was always set up to be a one-year marriage, as by the very nature of the contract. The Eagles won’t be picking up the big contract option for 2010, according to sources, or at least do not plan to. They will explore trade options for Vick during the window they have to do so in March before deciding whether or not to pick up his option.

Sources close to Vick fully anticipate him playing elsewhere in 2010, and say he is intent on being a starter if at all possible. Such opportunities should arise. Clubs to keep a close eye on include Buffalo, St. Louis, Carolina, Oakland and Jacksonville. Those teams are in the market for QB help, and many have struggled to sell tickets and attract attention in recent years, with their smaller-market status.

Vick’s cause will be helped as well by the weak free-agent class of quarterbacks — Daunte Culpepper could be the class of that group, for instance — as well as an upcoming draft without prospects who seem ready to play right away. Whether teams opt to wade in heavily for Vick on the trade market remains to be seen, but if he hit the market as a free agent, league sources expect at least a half-dozen or so teams to have legitimate interest.

To Vick and Vikings:

Your comment “With their Recievers who can catch unlike Atlantas” is bogus.

Roddy White’s careers stats:

YEAR G Rec Yds Avg Long TD QB
2005 16 29 446 15.4 54 3 VICK
2006 16 30 506 16.9 55 0 VICK
2007 16 83 1202 14.5 69 6 HARRINGTON/REDMAN
2008 16 88 1382 15.7 70 7 RYAN
2009 16 85 1153 13.6 90 11 RYAN

Looks like Vick can’t even pass as well as two guys that are clipboard carriers. Roddy can catch jsut fine with a real QB throwing him the ball…but of course, as soon as Vick puts on a Vikings jersey his inner passer will suddenly come out and blossom.

MAN, look at those top-tier teams fighting for Vick’s services! That’s amazing!! I can’t believe the superb talent at QB whose jobs Vick wants to take…Bulger, Delhomme, Russell, Edwards, Garrard. That is SUCH as testament to Vick’s appeal.

Man, “Choke”, you really got me with that zinger. That’s was such a great comeback…where did you find the room in that head of yours to come up with it? I mean, I was expecting you to refute the Roddy White stats or explain why Vick, ostensibly the best QB in the league in your opinion, and only being pursued by teams that finished 6-10, 1-15, 8-8, 5-11, and 7-9.

Face it man, that clock you hear ticking or the sun you see setting on the horizon, is Vick’s career as a quarterback in the NFL. I’m sure he would do OK as a special teamer or punt returner, though. There are open tryouts every year.
