The Falcons have been going against the Saints forever. So should Falcons fans be pulling for Indianapolis? (Curtis Compton/AJC)
Had an interesting exchange last night with Falcons coach Mike Smith, when I spoke to him about two conference championship games. At one point, I asked Smith if he had any feelings about the New Orleans franchise finally making it to the Super Bowl.
“No, not really,” Smith said.
So the whole thing about the tormented franchise . . .
“No.”
This wasn’t surprising, I suppose. Smith coaches the Falcons. Football coaches don’t get emotional about other team’s conquests, particularly when the other team is a division rival. (The Falcons lost two close meetings this season). But I was wondering: How do Falcons fans feel about this?
In the live blog off championship Sunday, several Falcons fans chimed in, saying no true Falcons fan should be pulling for the Saints. Maybe because I didn’t grow up here, I can’t relate to the hate in the rivalry. Plus, I’ve never gotten a sense of that “hate” in annual Falcons-Saints games that I do Georgia-Florida, Georgia-Georgia Tech and even Braves-Mets.
Question: Am I wrong for liking the fact the Saints finally made it, especially with the backdrop of the problems in the city of New Orleans? How to do you feel about the Saints being in the Super Bowl, and will you be pulling for them or Indianapolis?
Let me know what you think and I’ll check back.

I’m rooting for the Saints, though I like both teams about equally. The Saints are definitely good for the city of N.O., and it would be great to see them win the city a championship – they’ve been through a lot. I view the Falcons – Saints rivalry as more of a friendly one as opposed to bitter.

I have been a Falcons fan since 1985, but as much as I want to beat the Saints when we play them, I have never hated the Saints. Maybe because they have been even worse than us for most of the time, so I couldn’t engender any animosity towards them. Now, due to my UT allegiance, I will be rooting for Peyton Manning, but it wouldn’t bother me a bit if the Saints win.

I echo Freshmaker’s sentiments. Even though I’m a long suffering Falcons fan, the two teams sort of mirror eachother in terms of ineptitude. Plus, factoring in the Katrina disaster recovery, a Super Bowl victory would help the city’s self image.

I, for one, do not believe in conference or divisional loyalty. I want the Saints to lose every game simply because the Falcons are in competition with them. I’d feel the same way if it was the Panthers or Buccaneers. Nothing personal, it’s just that when those teams lose it’s usually better for the Falcons. Also, noone wants to hear their rivals flaunting a Super Bowl (am I allowed to use that term? I don’t want the NFL coming after me) victory.

I will, forever, root for any team playing against the Saints – especially and including the Falcons. Not only does the “who dat” garbage sound ridiculous, but if people in Atlanta said a phrase like that, the rest of the country would just think we’re dumb southerners.
Not to be completely insensitive, but when is the “makes the city look good after Katrina” noise going to stop? It has been over 4 years, and the only thing that’ll make the city look better than it does now is to rebuild the houses and put poor people in them – merely playing a football game that MANY people can’t afford to even attend (and folks without homes spend money that they shouldn’t so they can be in who dat nation) will not revive a city that, in my opinion, is limited in its revival (without an influx of serious capital and new home building).
That said, I guess all the Michael Vick stories continue after years in Atlanta, so maybe Vick and Katrina have something in common – they’ll never go away.

neither for nor against really. Indifferent. I despised the Bucs when Chucky was on the sideline. I don’t really have any hatred or dislike for the Saints at all.
How depressing is it for THIS city though if the Bucs and Saints win one the Panthers were a few cheating quarters away and the Falcons are light years away?
Our one chance we get that stupid moron who is now a broadcaster for the in Charlotte picking up a hooker…. nice.

I still don’t understand why some people in the South treat college and pro football as if they compete against each other. If you’re a Falcons fan, your college team doesn’t factor into anything. They’re different conversations. The Dawgs, regardless of your love for them, will never go to the Super Bowl. The Falcons will never play in a BCS Championship game. You’re allowed to enjoy both teams equally.
Now, the Colts NEED to win this game. If the Saints win, their fans will be incorrigible if not impossible to deal with next season.

Because my family’s roots are deep in the New Orleans and surrounding areas, it was difficult growing up in Atlanta where your friends were Falcons fans but your parents rooted for the Saints. I was somewhat confused about where my allegiance should be. I guess this is why I always viewed the rivalry as something like a sibling one. So now as an adult, even though I’m a full-time Falcon fan, I definitely would like to see the Saints win as I know my father would be proud of his beloved team!!

As a Falcon fan, it’s hard for me to hate the Saints, as they are one of the few franchises that have had less success than the Falcons. Manning’s got his, so I guess I’ll pull for the Saints…I like the idea of having two games next year against the reigning champs.

The Saints will crash and burn in Miami against the more experienced Colts. Peyton Manning will pick the Saints defense apart when they try to blitz, Drew Brees will throw two costly Interceptions, and the city of New Orleans will have their hearts ripped out and will have a new title to go will their history (Super Bowl Chokers) as well as a new dance from their owner (The funeral march boogie).

All you tree huggin hippies on this board who are saying “Awee as long as the SEC east wins” and “I cheer for the Ain’ts when they aren’t playing Atlanta” are a bunch of mouth breathing posers. If you are a REAL fan of the Atlanta Falcons then you should NEVER want the saints to win this superbowl. Do you think that Eagles fans or Giant fans wanted Dallas to win the superbowl last week? Exactly. Go live in your free love communes in a Van down by the River, you guys aren’t real Atlanta Falcons fans!

Not sure where some of this hostility is coming from, it’s always been a friendly rilvary to me. There fans are normally very polite and respectful, although they were pretty loud this year at the Dome. I want to beat them every time but I also want to see the NFC South represented in a positive way. With that being said I hope they win, but don’t think they have a chance. Thier entire year has been about luck and poor calls in thier favor by the refs. As was the case yesterday. With that said, I love the rilvary between the saints and dirty birds, it’s fun. I had mixed emotions watching the Saints vs Vikings, but now that they won I wish them the best in the SB. After all, they represent the NFC South. I think the Saints organization has done a great job with the team. They left no doubt as to who was the best team in the NFC South this year. The Falcons were left with the wild card as their goal; Saints sort of rubbed our noses in the dirt, wouldn’t you say? I still don’t fully understand how Matt Ryan didn’t start in the second Saints game; that game was huge. Kudos to the Saints defense; they won the game yesterday.

I remember when the Falcons had a special half time tribute to William Andrews and these jerks wouldn’t even clap, I asked some of them to at least show the man some respect, that I would clap for Dalton Hilliard or Archie Manning, they said F%&# William Andrews. I am pulling for the Colts, even though Peyton went to UT. As a lifelong Falcons fan, it is just too much to pull for the Saints. I am happy to see them in it because it shows that a long-suffering franchise (such as the Falcons) can do it. And at least they arent the Bucs. When it comes down to it, I dont care who wins as long as the excitement from the last two Super Bowls is still there.

Jeff, while I wholeheartedly disagree with you, I don’t think that makes you wrong. I don’t believe this is an issue with a clear “right” or “wrong.”
The problems that still exist in New Orleans won’t be helped by the Saints going to the Super Bowl. That doesn’t re-build houses or replace lost belongings – unless the players are all donating their playoff checks to relief efforts.
That being said, my experiences over the past 25-plus years have not been so positive as a visiting team fan in the New Orleans area. It is amazing how they feel their franchise (even prior to this season) was far superior to the Falcons.
So, personally, I was not for the Saints (especially not after how reviews played a factor in determining the outcome of last night’s game). I will not be a fan of the Saints in two weeks either.

Atlanta is full of bandwagon fans, the Braves are a perfect example as when they were in the gutter few people cared but when they began to win it was tomahawk chop and Go Braves from the whole city. SOME Georgia Bulldawgs fans are the absolute worst to, there are fans that actually believe that ESPN kept them out of the National Title in 07 even though they didn’t win the East nor did they play in or even win the SEC Title. SOME of them talk about about them having National Title years in 02 and 05 like that means anything considering the Coaches Trophy is not sitting in Athens. When they lose a game it is always someone elses fault like the refs, Willie Martinez, or even worse one of their own players. Worst fans in college football by far……….they can’t even keep the campus clean during gameday. 41-17

As an formar Atlanta Falcons follower (no Mr. Michael Vick, no Taxman), I wanted the Saints to beat that New orleans saints to beat the man who should be retired. I no longer work in Heaven at the Internal Revenue Service and Favre should not have been brought back to steal jackson’s position. Who next Sam Huff or Leroy Jordan or Bart Starr or Johnny Unitas or Sammy Baugh. God intends for us to be in our on place at our own time. I was at Stalingrad and Sevestapol and Farve should stay retire after he won all those games at Green Bay. My father brought us to be Green Bay fans and he don’t cotton to traitors.
I will root for the Indianapolis Colts in the Super Bowl, because these have the best coach in the National Football League in Mr. James “Jim” Caldwell. But I am glasd the Falcons’ divisional rivals the New Orleans Saints beat the Atlanta Falcons twice this year. (God is on our side.) And I am glad the Saintas won the divsion and went to the playoffs and are going to the Supwer Bowl and the falcons did absolutely nothein this year.
By the way did you folks see Mr. Michael Vick in the Eagles vs. Falcons game this year on Sunday, december 6th, 2009? That is why we wore on our belt buckle thet God/Allah is on our side. Sweet!!!! And then on Thursday December 31th, Mr. Michael Vick’s university, Virginia Tech beat Tennessee 37-14 here in the Chick-fil-A Bowl here in Georgia Dome in downtown Marthasville, Georgia (Atlanta, GA). Yes the Georgia Dome the house that Mr. Michael Vick built and filled up! Yes God/Allah is on our side. Today Amerika, Tomorrow the World! History always repeats itself. Lose falcons, Lose falcons. Go Colts, Go Saints, Go Eagles!!! Anybody but the backstabbing Falcons.

If you always supported the Aints, even when suffering fans would put bags on their heads, congrats, but if you’re the typical Atlanta “Fairweather Fan” sportin yo Yankees Caps and freshly purchased Aints Jersey then I hope you remove your head from your rear end and support yo local teams more – Lord knows ATLANTA sure could use fans of ATLANTA TEAMS. Yes, I’ll be rooting for the Saints.
1. I DO generally “root for teams from my Division” when my home team or favorite is eliminated. SEC, NFC South/NFC, NL East, etc.
2. Somewhat like last year, if you get beat out, it’s reassuring to go down to the best team. Who thinks finishing second to a playoff loser is better than finishing second to the eventual Super Bowl winner?
3. The Colts don’t deserve to win after laying down at the end of the regular season. Something about not respecting the integrity of the game.
4. I like Drew Brees; always have. At Purdue, he beat out the son of a co-worker of mine for the starting QB job. Feel bad for my co-worker and his son, but he had nothing but the highest praise for Brees as a QB and a person. His son had lead a Missouri HS team to the state championship.
5. Teams that win the Super Bowl tend to struggle (by comparison) the following year. GO SAINTS!!!!

You can’t POSSIBLY call yourself a Falcon’s fan and root for the Saints! And I don’t want to hear about conference loyalty. The only folks in the nation that finds a way to root for college foes are these folks in SEC country…it makes no sense! And this is coming from a Georgia/ATL native. I root for my team. Forgive me, Jeff, but I have never seen the reason why the New Orleans Saints football club deserves to win the Superbowl because they were devasted by a tragic storm.
Using that logic, I guess we should be have been rooting for the Miami Dolphins to win the Superbowl for the past dozen or so years because they were struck by Hurricane Andrew back in 1992.

I will actually be rooting for the Saints. Superbowl champions not called the Patriots typically implode the next year as anyone who can looks to cash in on their rings. So GEAUX SAINTS, we’ll be waiting for your weakened satisfied and complacent butts next year.
Oh yeah about those long suffering Saints fans. In the aftermath of Katrina New Orleans descended into complete chaos the Superdome was turned into a war-zone with rape gangs running unchecked and savagery and depravity of pre-historic levels unleashed by some of the very same people hollering themselves hoarse for the black and gold. So for the most part I am callously un-sympathetic.

Question for the supposed dual Falcons AND saints fans:
What’s the point of having a rival if you’re going to root for him? Of course you want your team to win every game- presumably against your rival and any other team. If you cheer for your rival when they don’t play your team that makes you a fan of that team.
I HAVE/WILL/NEVER CHEER FOR THE NEW ORLEANS SAINTS TO WIN A FOOTBALL GAME. A couple years ago when the Falcons needed a Saints victory to potentially get in the playoffs, I did not even cheer for them then. Bobby Hebert, Morten Anderson, Ironhead all have astericks next to their names for having sullied their careers. Joe Horn doesn’t even merit a discussion.

My quick Colts story. I had a project in Indy and was eating dinner by myself at the bar at St. Elmo’s (fantastic steakhouse) when the bartender said a special guest was in the restaurant. I looked around and saw Sean Astin (Sam Wise the Hobbitt and John & Patty Duke’s son) and must say I was not impressed. He’s a Hobbitt in real life. I finished my meal and was paying my bill when the bartender said there was another special guest in the restaurant. I said, “No offense, but if it’s the likes of Sean Astin, I’m leaving.” I turned to walk towards the door and damn near ran into Peyton Manning! I was taken aback (he’s a big, big boy) and didn’t know what to say but blurted out the first thing to come to mind. I said, “Roll Tide!” and stuck my hand out. He laughed and shook my hand (it was a little like shaking your dad’s hand when you were a kid) and asked what I was doing in town. I told him and wished him luck on the season. He was in a suit and there with his wife and another couple. He wished me a nice visit and I left. He was a really nice guy.

Here’s the deal: You can be happy for New Orleans and the Saints for finally making it to a Super Bowl and (in some way) being a bright spot for a city still trying to overcome Katrina. That makes sense.
What doesn’t make sense is those who want the Saints to do well because it somehow reflects on the Falcons for being in the NFC or the NFC South. That argument makes no sense. Just as the teams in the SEC other than Alabama did not get an “SEC prize” for Bama winning the NC, no Falcons fan will receive an “NFC prize” or “NFC South” prize if the Saints do well. It’s a stupid argument to make, but one I heard often on local sports radio this weekend.

The real reason I’d like for them to win is because it’s gonna feel REALLY good when the Birds beat that a** twice next year, especially if they are the defending superbowl champs. I just hope Sharper don’t ask Eugene for his Miami references.

I absolutely hate the Saints, though I will admit it’s very hard not to root for Drew Brees.
Jeff: The Falcons-Saints was a friendly rivalry in the past because both teams just plain stunk (i.e. it’s hard to be bitter with a fellow sewer dweller). Now that both teams are competitive (for the most part), it’s gotten more bitter. Not as bitter as the Falcons-Bucs, but working it’s way towards it.
My only Super Bowl wish is to see Bob Sanders play one down at safety for the Colts. Of course, during that down, he’d spear Jeremy Shockey right between the numbers. Of course, I wish no ‘undue’ or ‘unjust’ harm on any fellow human being. Go get ‘em Bob!

Look, once your team is out of contention, folks usually do have a preference for who they want to win or lose. That isn’t the same as bleeding red & black or “cheering” for them. If it isn’t the Videotape Cheaters (Patriots, may they all suffer “diminishing skills,”) Raiders (slime of the universe tho’ I was for them in the tuck rule game,) or “Tampon Bay,” I have no visceral reaction to other teams.
If it is the Aints fans you despise, then I highly recommend a “vaccination” dose of a Patriots fanatic. Their sense of “entitlement” is vile. I cannot imagine any Southerner could ever reach that level of sanctimony, obnoxiousness and volcanic projectile bile. It’s amazing I’m still married after my beloved invited a Hatriots fan to watch the ATL game 2009 with us,who proceeded to jab his finger in my face, saying “you’re going down.” As a person who was almost punched in the face at Rich Stadium and survived several Eagles stadium incursions, I cannot envision preferring the Patriots ever again.

I’m 42, been going to the games since I was 6 back in ‘73. I am so used to seeing the Saints and hoping they lose. How could I possibly cheer for them? They are doubly annoying because whenever they beat us in the past they were not very good either, so it was salt in our wounds that even the Aints could kick our ass. Big Ben ‘78–followed up by another last-second win against the Saints that year–remains a highlight of Atlanta sports history for me.

The “Who Dat” chant is so stupid and obnoxious. After watching the game at the Taco Mac in Midtown last night, Saints fans are among the most irritating I’ve ever had the displeasure of being around. And all of the stories that still attempt to play up the angle of how this poor downtrodden franchise rose from the destruction caused by hurricane Katrina to make the playoffs.. Uh, it was 5 years ago. Can we please move on and stop trying to make this cheesy franchise the darlings of the NFL?

I’m a Falcons fan that lived in Louisiana for 5 years – 1 of those IN New Orleans; I can tell you this fan-base is MORE than deserving of the experience.
I called two close friends of mine who are Saints fans; they were both darn-near brought to tears. Having lived there through three hurricanes – two of which crippled the state within the same year – I can tell you that’s it’s about time some good luck came these folks’ way.
Through it all, though, their fans have packed that dome when teams were good, bad, and in-between. Sure, they might’ve fallen short of sellout a few times here and there, but never by tens of thousands of unsold tickets. This is an economically repressed area, and these folks support their team (even more so since their return in 2006) with as much fervor as you see from the Cheeseheads in Green Bay. It’s a love affair even Hurricane Katrina couldn’t split up, and I for one, a die-hard Falcon, couldn’t be happier for my friends in Louisiana. I was pulling for ‘em last night, and I’ll do it again when they hit the field in Miami.
P.S., I also remember the outpouring of support from the Saints fanbase and organization when Atlanta got in nearly a decade ago. One good turn deserves another…

There’s no way in heck I’m pulling for the saints!!!! A true fan should never pull for a divisonal rival. Are you all nuts!!! This should be common knowledge. Besides, I think the saints defense are gonna have their hands full with Manning,Wayne, Garqcon,Clark,Collie,Addai and Brown. Also, the colts defense is a lot quicker than the Vikings Defense. At least the Saints can now say they’ve been to a super bowl like the rest of us in the nfc south.

I was born and raised in New Orleans so this is a very exciting day for me. I never believed I would wake up in the morning to the realization that the Saints were going to the Superbowl. WHO DAT!!!
Honestly, if the fields were reversed and the Falcons were headed to the Superbowl I don’t think I could root for them. Any victory for the Falcons makes it harder for the Saints on any level and vice versa. I grew up loathing the Falcons. They are the only team that has been a divisional rivalry for my Saints for my whole life. If you claim to be a Falcons fan but root for the Saints then you are nothing more than a fair-weather fan. As a Saints fan, I am sick of the fair-weather fans rooting for us one week and against us the next. I don’t believe any loyal Falcon fan could root for the Saints in the Superbowl.

Why not root for your rivals, huh? Saints fan won’t put that Lombardi trophy up in our faces; they won’t bring that up every chance they get. Just like Gator fans don’t bring up their BCS titles every year and…oh wait….
As a lifelong Falcons fan, there is something genetically instilled within me to hate the Saints, their fans, and everything they stand for FOR LIFE. The only thing in the football world that’s almost as satisfying to me other than a Falcons or Tennessee victory is a Saints LOSS. When I hear pundits say they “deserve” to make it, I am bitter becasue Atlanta never gets any such comment or praise. The flow of deadbeats poured out of there in ‘05 didn’t help anything either. This was brought home by the MNF telecast of the Falcons-Saints game after Katrina when that gasbag Kornheiser said that all America except for a few Falcon fans were pulling for the Saints. It’s funny how some of the falcons fans talking about the city f new orleans and katrina. First of all the city did not caused katrina to destroy a great city, it was the federal goverment that failed to bill levees the way they were supposed to be built. Let’s not forget people, parts of atlanta flooded last year, no fault of yours, but mother nature. I’m a saints season ticket holder and support the team when they come to the georgia dome every year. I’ve heard some insulting thing by your fans while walking to the game, so let’s not try to talk about the saints fans being cruel etc, as opposed to the dirty birds fans. Besides the atlanta game, I go to at least one other away game during the year. I hear all kinds of things from what ever stadium fans i’m in. So I don’t think any fans can say terrible things about one team fans, because guess what people say the same thing about your fans. Besides most people in atlanta aren’t from atlanta. The other thing i’d like to say is don’t hate on the saints because they made it this year, we just happen to be the best team in the NFC, just like the colts are the best in the AFC. It’s the first time since 1983 that both number 1’s made it to the super bowl. Look at it this way, if the saints win the super bowl this year, at least you can say that your team lost to the NFL Champions. Oh, and by the way, for the ones who say that you could never root for anything new orleans, guess what, payton manning was born and raised in new orleans.

And to blogger (Juxta) get your facts straight before talking trash about the saints having a easy schedule, and that that’s why they made it to the super bowl. Get your facts right, the saints had the # 8 strongest schedule in the league this year, and the viking had the 29th out of 32 teams in the nfl. So stop trying to find excuses about why your team is not in the super bowl this year. Good teams find ways to win, and that’s what happened last night. We force turn overs on defense, even without having a top 10 defense in the league. The defense get’s the ball back, which enables our number one offense to score lot’s of points. Hopefully one day, your team will emulate what the saints do. So stop being a HATER in the house.

As a long-time Falcons fan, I will not be rooting for the Saints in the Super Bowl. That being said, I am proud that the NFC is the ONLY division in the NFL that has sent all four of its members to the Super Bowl during the past 12 years. There is not another division in the NFL that can boast the level of competition that the NFC South as from year to year. Think about it – Falcons in 1998, Tampa Bay in 2002, Carolina in 2003, and now the Saints in 2009.

The truth is that its hard to have a real rivaly when fans don’t get to mingle.
In the 80’s and 90″s bus loads of Saints fans could come to the game to torment the Falcon’s fans. But these days, fans can’t travel because most teams sell all of their tickets to season ticket holders.

It is going to be an ugly game with the Colts putting the Saints in a choke hold. I’ve said it all season. The Saints are the most over rated team in the NFL. The Vikings practicly served the game on a platter and the Saints sat down and ate. But to answer the question of will I be rooting for the Saints in 2 weeks. NOOOOOO! Sanchez started, Thomas Jones started,Shonn Greene started, Braylon Edwards and Jerricho Cotchery and Dustin Keller started, Lito Sheppard and Darrelle Revis started. Where did you pull “while the Jets rested players” from? This is as ridiculous as someone saying the Saints won yesterday because the Vikings rested players.
Enjoy the postseason and your Superbowl loss. At least the Falcons went 12 years before the Who Dats. Get your paper bag ready.

Hiram Saint,
“While the Jets rested players”??? Name one Jets starter of significance that “rested” against the Falcons. Sanchez, Thomas Jones, Shonn Greene, Jerrico Cotchery, Braylon Edwards, Dustin Keller, Darrelle Revis all started. That is like someone saying the Saints won because the Vikings rested all their starters…

Let me get this straight. You want to know if we will cheer for a divisional rival. I know football season is near the end….but there are other sports you can talk about than this simple mided blog post.
However, I am in no way rooting for the Saits. And I will never visit New Orleans again. How can I root for a team and a city that is so concentrated on football, when half the d@m$ city is still not over Katrina. All I hear is this is what this city needs. Stop worrying about football and concentrate more on getting your city back and putting roofs over people’s headds and get them out of the trailers you still have parked all over your city! DISGRACE!!!!!!!!

I am so glad NO is finally going to a Superbowl. I hope they win, but if they don’t, I don’t mind Peyton getting another notch towards the best QB of all time.
NO is like Atlanta’s younger brother. Atlanta 1966, New Orleans 1967. The teams were fired in the same crucible. Same crappy, unfair draft rules and team formation.
As HORRIBLE as the Falcons have been over the decades, they seemed to always come out on top of the Saints. Although NO managed to put back to back winning seasons ahead of the Falcons. When did they do that?

Dolfan – I don’t remember the Fins being in Super Bowl after Hurricane Andrew – actually I guess they haven’t been there since Undefeated season. I think some anti-fans actually may have been less hateful – if not rooting for the Yankees after 9/11. (I’m a Red Sox fan and can honestly say my feelings for Yanks “softened” a bit that year – as many Red Sox fans have good friends that were hurting in NYC area.) So maybe you should wait for answer to your question before applying the “liars” label. Now winning Super Bowl will not have any big impact on bring back the Big Easy – but I know a lot of folks there will be feeling better for a little while at least. I’ve always liked the Falcs but not from Atlanta nor have I lived in GA – so no real animosity toward Saints – and cannot give a real assessment on how folks in the region feel about the Saints. Hope for a good game and really don’t care right now who wins. I’m sure I’ll find myself rooting for one of the teams during the game.

Well I hope there’s still someone here that might be reading this. I applaude the saints effort to make it to the big game but… I see payton m. slicing and dicing the saints’ defense to pieces. Mr. Manning has too much playoff experience. He can read defenses like no other qb today. The colts are on a roll. Minnesota almost won even with all the turnovers. That shows you how bad the N.O. defense is. If it wasn’t for brees and the N.O. offense scoring 50 points a game, they wouldn’t have made it to the playoffs with that defense. Sorry, but it will be the colts by at least three touchdowns. I think Brett Favre should end his career as a falcon.

I was born in Atlanta and raised in the suburbs. I just moved to Nola 1.5 years ago for grad school, and I’m tellin y’all, you got to root for the Saints. This city needs this so bad you guys don’t even know. This has nothing to do with Katrina. Wave after wave of corrupt local politicians (who make Bill Campbell look like King Arthur) have messed up this city so bad that the only reason to live here is for the people’s ability to party like nobody else.
After this big win, people picked up their musical instruments and formed impromptu marching bands, parading through the streets with random people dancing behind them. I can promise you the people of no other city would appreciate a championship more than these folks in New Orleans.
Pulling for the Saints right now and the Falcons next year!

Maybe it doesn’t help that I’m a bucs fan (ya, ya, I know, what right do I have to be talking smack, but at least us bucs can win and lose like sportsman). I loathe everything about the Saints. Their silly ” Who Dat” chant, the banana on their helmet, ( That’s what it looked like to me as a 5 year old. ) and the lovable loser status all make me nauseous. Now they are everyones darling because of Katrina. Well, the Fed did send them money years prior to fix the levies but local government used the cash for vote buying projects. Pathetic city, no other way around it. I hope Manning runs up the score. That will still bug me though, because his daddy was a Saint. Oh yeah, when the Falcons got Bobby Hebert, Morten Anderson and Jim Mora Jr. I was disgusted as well. No one associated with the Saints should be allowed the honor of being a Falcon.

Hiramsaint, this is proof that you never let the truth get in the way of whatever you want to say. The Jets were 7-6 heading into the Falcons game and had to play Indianapolis and Cincinnati the two games fafter that. Are you saying that the Jets were so confident they were going to make the playoffs at 7-6 with two conference games to go that they mailed it in against the Falcons? I would say that your Saints mailed it in against Dallas, Tampa Bay, and Carolina.

1. The FEMA comment was totally out of line and the most naive comment I have read since UGA held up signs during LSU/UGA at Athens in Fall 2005 stating “Go back to your home.. oh wait, you don’t have one.” Classy, Georgia, classy.
2. Per observation at this year’s game in Atlanta, Saints fans may be dirty (heck, most of us are LSU fans) but the only thing worse than a Saints fan is a Falcons fan.
3. Sean Payton, Drew Brees, Marques Colston, Reggie Bush and Jeremy Shockey are the best things to happen to NOLA since Port of Call and Pat O’Brien’s. It’s finally our time to represent the NFC (South) in the Superbowl.. don’t you support your conference in the NCAA National Championship even if your team isn’t playing? Grow up. You lost this year. There is always next and I will be right beside you cheering for the Falcons if the Saints lose out next season.

been a Falcons fan since 1966. Buck talks about the Falcons-Saints as an NFC-South rivalry but it goes deeper than that. I remember our birds winning 62-7 in 1973 with our backup QB-Dick Shiner, but most people here haven’t lived here long enough to remember outdoor pro football. The Saints have a loud, obnoxious, passionate fan base throughout the city, state and region. We don’t. I was at Waffle House yesterday talking about Mark Price’s coaching contributions with the Hawks and the guy next to me asked if he was from here. WHAT?? ANYway, next Sunday-I will pull for the Saints even though they had 2 gift wins against us AND I would love to be in the french quarter after the superbowl because they will celebrate no matter what.
