Peyton Manning faces the Jets' top-ranked defense.
Brett Favre will battle the noise in New Orleans
The two best Sundays of the NFL season are the first one and this one.
The first Sunday is filled with hope. Today theoretically determines the two best teams in football, with the NFC and AFC championships. Generally the games live up to the hype — unlike the Super Bowl, which too often is less entertaining than the commercials.
Both games have great story lines. In the AFC, the New York Jets haven’t lost a game since losing to the Falcons last month. (Afterward, the distraught Jets coach, Rex Ryan, said: “This obviously is t0ugh because now we’re obviously out of the playoffs, and it’s unfortunate.”) But even with the league’s No. 1 defense, it’s difficult seeing the Jets upsetting Indianapolis. Even if they slow down Peyton Manning, it’s hard to see the Colts scoring less than 20 points, or New York scoring even that many.
The NFC game is harder to call. The Minnesota Vikings are a better overall team than the New Orleans Saints, if only because of their defense (No. 6 vs. No. 25). But having covered games in almost every stadium and arena in the country, I can tell you that none is louder than the New Orleans Superdome, particularly after the fans have had several hours to “prep” on Bourbon St. That’s something Brett Favre will have to deal with. (The Metrodome in Minneapolis is close to the Superdome in noise level, but fans obviously are quiet when the Vikings have the ball.)
This might be a prediction stemming more from desire than my head. But I’ll go with the Saints. (Favre winning would justify — in his mind — all of his prima donna actions leading up to this season. My stomach couldn’t take that.)
Drew Brees and the offense seem to show us something new every week. The team has shown a t0ughness and resolve this season that often has been missing in the past. Suffice to say, the win would be a huge boost for a city that needs it, and for a franchise that never has been to the Super Bowl.
When the games are over, I’ll have Falcons coach Mike Smith break it all down. I plan to speak to Smith after each game for a column that will be posted tonight. If you have any particular questions you want me to ask Smith, let me know.
Until then, I’ll be here watching the games and blogging live (from my couch). Coffee time. Back in a few minutes.

I remember one August morning I had the day off. I got my breakfast and turned on SportsCenter ready for a lazy morning. ESPN literally had an hour and a half of nonstop Favre coverage, complete with hundreds of images of him getting off the same plane.
I cannot imagine what’s going through the heads of ESPN’s producers. As if we’re all waiting crowded around the TV, just waiting for the next Favre update.

Actually, Stinky Wintes took most of the shot in his rump and the little bird just flew on off grinning and we knew it was because he knew Jeff couldn’t lay off anything low and outside. That may be the problem with some of the politicians, too. We can ask Coach Smith.

It’s amazing how mediocre the Falcons fans are, gloating how proud they are with the direction of the team, yet if you line up the following most recent “ROOKIE” coaches, their coach stands out for the wrong reasons:
- John Harbaugh
- Rex Ryan
- Jim Caldwell
- Mike Smith
Mike Smith is the only one with ZERO playoff wins and ZERO Championship game appearances and ALL of the them EXCEPT Mike Smith, led their teams to the Championship Game in their rookie seasons, two of which with ROOKIE QBS.
I know what you are thinking, the Falcons have a terrible defense, but the Jets defense was not good in 2008, yet in ONE season, Rex Ryan turned them into the NUMBER ONE defense in the NFL, yet Mike Smith, whom was a supposedly defense guru in Jacksonville, yet in 2 years the defense seems even worse than it did in 2008, which basically was the defense handed to him.
So if Falcons fans are indeed happy with the direction the franchise is headed, then I’m sure the Jets, Colts & Ravens fans are saying “I guess that’s why they are the laugh of the NFL”

I’ve been talking about that game for 2 weeks – since the Jets beat Cincy the 2nd time. Gives Falcons fans hope, as they manhandled the Jets in the Meadowlands with a QB with a bad foot, no RB and missing defensive players. Granted, the Jets missed a couple of FGs (deja vu in this game). I’ve got a question for Coach Smith. If Indianapolis wins, then does that mean that NFL coaches (including Indy Coach Jim Caldwell) know more about the game and their teams than all of the second guessing NFL reporters and sports talk radio hosts who doubted the wisdom of sitting the starters during the team’s first meeting with the Jets?
Jeff Schultz

Intellibird — I was definitely going to ask Mike about Indy’s decision. But the way you stated your question, it seems to presume the Colts wouldn’t be here today if they hadn’t rested their starters. That’s something we’ll never know.

Hey Jeff,
I know this has NOTHING to do with the great game the Colts just played:
But have you had a chance to talk yet to Todd Grantham (we know Mark and Tim have). And if you have, what’s your take on him?
And if you haven’t… umm, what’s your take on him.
Me and some other of the regular Dawg bloggers have long-maintained that the best defense to stop all of these coach-controlled, dummy-football spread offenses (you know, where the QB never reads a defense or takes a snap from center) is the 3-4 (or the 46) because of the extra LB.
What is your feelings on that?

Just spoke to Mike Smith about the first game. Had some interesting comments, particularly about Peyton Manning and the Colts. Smith faced Manning twice a year when he was with Jacksonville. Asked him if helped from a defensive preparation perspective to play him so often: “I’m very familiar with him. Saw some routes, some checks that he’s been doing for 10 years. You notice how many plays he takes down to the last second on the play clock before he snaps the ball? He gets an image of the defense and he wants to take it down to the last second before he decides what the best way to attack the defense is. …
Familiarity is the key to trying to defend him. But I really believe this. Sometimes making him go the long way is better. When the Jets were winning, they were holding Indy to field goals. That’s what you have to do. Play great red zone defense. Give them the short stuff. Tackle well. Knock the ball out when you can.”
I’ll have more from Smith later when I post a column tonight.

Look… as a rule, I don’t have an NFL “home” team. I don’t like rooting for guys on one team, just to see them leave and go to another team I “hate.”
I don’t like rooting for laundry.
I do, however, root for specific players. Tom Brady and Matt Ryan being a couple of the players I root for.
Eli Manning being a specific player I root against.
Brett “Jay Leno” Favre is now also someone I root against. So while normally, I would not root for the Saints, because they’re in Matt Ryan’s division, I cannot root for Brett “Jay Leno” Favre.
Anyone on this board who roots for Brett “Jay Leno” Favre is certifiable.
After what NOLA went through, I have no problems with rooting for the Saints.
Sorry to the Falcons die-hards, but that’s the way I see it.
The NFL just isn’t like college football. I’m far more invested in the Dawgs, being a student and soon to be alum.
So GEAUX SAINTS!!! Down with Brett “Jay Leno” Favre!

Bugkiller, maybe so, but then Bobby would have been hired elsewhere and probably kept playing post season ball, while the Braves would have went straight down hill like almost always happens when you fire a coach for only getting to the World Series.
Deciding when hit and run or pitch a righty against a lefty is not what makes a good manager. It is giving your team the opportunity. They guy has coached for 50 years, but you point to one or two situations to says “he is the worst ever”.

@Mr. Charlie…
… I look at the fact that Bobby the Boob took some of the best teams in baseball history into the playoffs and totally choked when it mattered most.
I look at the fact that he is probably the worst tactical manager in baseball history.
I look at the fact that he never used his players correctly, waiting for the three-run homer, and refusing to manufacture runs when you had guys with speed.
I look at the fact that Bobby the Boob treated games in October, do-or-die games, like they were games in April, and REFUSED to change his approach… even when it NEVER worked.
Do you know how Einstein defined insanity? Doing the same thing over and over again, in the exact same way every time, yet always expecting a different result.
Ladies and gentleman, I give you Bobby the Boob… the DEFINITION of insanity.
They call baseball playoffs a “crapshoot.” You know what’s a crapshoot? Winning four world series in 12 trips to the playoffs.
Joe Torre did that with the Yankees. 1 out of every 3 tries. THAT’S a crapshoot.
Bobby the Boob? 1 in 14. NOT a crapshoot.
I had a word to describe Georgia’s defense under Soft Willie Martinez since he took over: TREND.
As in, EVERY year, the team defense gave up more points and more yards under Martinez. If you were to put those two stats on a line graph, the lines trend up, with NO break going down.
The only reason why Bobby the Boob won the Series in 1995 was because of Glavine and the fact that Hargrove might possibly be an even worse postseason manager than he is.
Look at some of the managers that Bobby the Boob lost to in the playoffs:
Bruce Bochey
Phil Garner (TWICE!!!)
Jim Fregosi
I mean… COME ON!
Boston fired Grady Little for being exactly like Bobby the Boob.
What happened for Boston the very next year???

I root for the Falcons because of Thomas Dimitroff, Matt Ryan, Mike Smith.
Not out of loyalty to the team, but because of guys like them who are involved with the team.
Like I try to explain to people who prefer the NFL to College: I’m actually a part OF my University.
No fan of an NFL team can claim to have that kind of connection to their team outside of Green Bay, where the team is actually owned by the fans.
I see all pro sports like this. When I was a kid, I cared about the Braves. I cried when they lost the 1992 Series.
But when Glavine left to go to the hated Mets because of one extra year on a contract because of union pressure, I’m sorry… but that was the end of me caring about pro sports like I care about UGA.
So, while you may see me as “sorry,” I actually have good reasons to not care about a bunch of mercenaries.
How will YOU feel when in two years, the NFL has a work stoppage? It won’t bother me at all.

She just can’t forgive Peyton for playing for the hated Orange or Harvin for playing for those b*stard Gators. Why is Farve a backstabber, the Packers did not want him back. He is flaky, but I believe he is torn between retiring and playing. I lean slightly for the Saints because of our shared misery (with the Falcons) in the NFC South. Their team, though, has alot of bad sports (see Pierre, Shockey, and the smug coach Payton, as examples) who exhibitited such bad behaviour in beating the Falcons this year. Not to mention their over-confident fans (see any Saints blog to confirm). They may win, yes, but it will be close and they’ll require a little luck. If the Vikes win then I’ll be happy for Farve. My wife says that his whiskers look worse than mine. Gotta respect such an elderly QB.

grantham- I did a little research, and from 1974-2003, 28% of all OTs resulted in the team who won the coin toss winning the game on the opening drive. That is absolutely too often. NCAA rules aren’t perfect, but certainly more fair than the NFL.

Yeah Saints. Congrats to the only team in the NFL with a worse history than Atlanta. I often think of the Saints as the Falcons cousins in the NFL family. The teams two histories are almost identical. For example, the Falcons 4th ever playoff victory in franchise history came in OT against Minnesota on a field goal to send the team to a Super Bowl in Miami. The Saints 4th ever playoff victory in franchise history came against the Vikings in OT on a field goal to send the team to a Super Bowl in Miami. Geaux Saints!

NFL overtime rules stink! I’m very happy for NO and Drew Breese, but each team should get the football on offense in overtime. I don’t like the college rule at the 20 either.
It should start with another Qtr and both teams have at least one opportunity on offense.
Baseball allows both teams to bat! Basketball, Hockey, and most other sports allow for both teams to have a chance offensively. NFL rules, allow for the LUCK of a coin flip!
Our Falcons were eliminated by this rule!

Let me clarify! I don’t think it should be a full Qtr unless warranted. It should be sudden death AFTER each offense has one chance to put points on the board. If the coin toss is won and a field goal is the result, the opposing team should get the ball with a chance to tie or win. One time only, unless they tie the game. Then sudden death rules should be in effect.

That was the sloppiest champ game I’ve ever seen. Embarrassing to the NFC. Manning will annihilate the Saints. They don’t play smart and their one-trick pony has developed happy feet. How many fumbles did the Vikings have, other than the three they lost? Seven? I remember saying to my buddy – “mark my words, before this game is over Favre will try to force one into coverage and get burned”. Now let’s just hope he retires to Bugtussle or wherever he lives with that ice-princess – God no wonder he doesn’t want to hang around the house.
