While Jackets, Dogs wait for coordinators, what do you think? (UPDATED)

Todd Grantham

Todd Grantham

(UPDATED BELOW WITH REPORT THAT TODD GRANTHAM HAS SIGNED A THREE-YEAR DEAL.)

All’s almost quiet on the Tech and Georgia defensive coordinator fronts, but probably not as quiet as the Jackets would like.

A couple of blogs back, I told you that Al Groh was suddenly being presented with job options other than Georgia Tech and I even threw out a few potential backup choice for the team’s defensive coordinator vacancy.

Well, with every passing day, this whole Groh-to-Tech scenario looks more fantasy than reality. At the very least, it’s getting crowded.

The New England Patriots are looking for a new defensive coordinator, after Dean Pees stepped down for health reasons. Media speculation immediately began that the Patriots may get into a bidding war for Groh with the Miami Dolphins.

Groh has worked with Patriots coach Bill Belichick in the past, as well as Dolphins vice president Bill Parcells. It should be noted that whereas Miami has interviewed Groh, there has been no word on whether the Pats will talk to Groh (or already have).

Folks, as I’ve stated before, if money is a factor in the Groh negotiations, Tech has no shot. It’s difficult enough for a college team — outside of  some programs in the SEC, any way — to hang with the NFL in salary structure. But Tech is especially hamstrung financially. I don’t know if Jackets coach Paul Johnson gave Groh some sort of deadline to sort things out but I can’t imagine it’s much longer.

About the Georgia search: If you missed it, Tim Tucker had a nice summary of the situation with Dallas Cowboys assistant Todd Grantham. If Grantham is Georgia’s guy, it follows that coach Mark Richt is a huge Minnesota Vikings fan this week because the Cowboys won’t release him until they’re out of the playoffs.

(UPDATE: As you might’ve seen in Tim Tucker’s 1:17 a.m. blog — sorry, I was sleeping — Grantham has signed a three-year contract to become Georgia’s defensive coordinator, according to Rivals.com. There has not yet been any announcement from Georgia or the Dallas Cowboys, who have a divisional playoff game this week against the Minnesota Vikings. Stay tuned to this and we’ll update later in the day.)

Since most of the focus has been on two names with the two job vacancies, I decided to put up two polls. Georgia: Would you be happy with Grantham? Tech fans: Would you be happy with Groh?

I’ll check back.

If Groh has a steady $2+ Mill/yr paycheck from UVA for the next 2 yrs, why is there talk of a “bidding war” for his services? Is a 65 yr old guy who just got fired from his HC job worth that much (or more) as an NFL DC?!?

We’d be happy with Groh…if that were to happen.

If not, hey CPJ and DRAD…..call Dean Pees! Great resume and was a D-Coordinator for both Belichek and Nick Saban at Mich St!

I wish Groh would come. I doubt he would go to any for the money, because he’s fine with the UVA income. I hope the Dolphins hire someone else (Parcells does not have the final say), and that the Pats go for someone else as well. Otherwise, the hope of getting him is lessening every day.

From what I understand, the pension system for coaches in the NFL is suppose to be off the charts, so I am not sure just the yearly salary is the only thing at play here. Groh may not need to worry about it much since he is older and probably has all the cash he needs. Grantham on the other hand…

Seems to me that Richt has all his eggs in one basket…again! I hope he is speaking to others as well.

If Richt hires Grantham, then I’m satisfied. Mark Richt will have done enough vetting to know whether this guy can do the job. Mark Richt is a capable coach who will hire the right people. Even Willie Martinez had his good games, he just didn’t have enough of them. When you see what Tennessee is up to its neck in, the problems going on in Gainesville, what they’ve got as a coach at Arkansas, we should feel fortunate.

Todd Grantham is a back stabber. After being hired in Cleveland as the DC he tried throwing the HC under the bus just to take over. Guy is a cheat and dishonest.

I will give Grantham the benefit of the doubt , because Saban wanted him and Richt wants him. His background is pretty impressive as an understudy. My only reservations is that as the DC with the Browns, Grantham’s defense got worse. Pass Defense from 4th to 16th to 24th (ypg) in his 3 years in Cleveland. Total Defense from 16th to 24th to 28th (ypg) during his tenure. So, I do have reservations. However, I will give Coach Richt the benefit of the doubt.

If Groh goes to the Dolphins, the dropoff is pretty steep. Nice the Groh can make thew decision without it being based on money…he can go where he wants. Sorry, fellow Tech fans…that may not be here.

Richt will make a great hire. He is changing defensive theory as well as coordinator. That is evident by whom we thing he is going after. On the other hand, ESPN was showing Derrick Dooley as being interviewed by UT. Now that will make us all take an extra swig, even those of us who don’t drink.

I’d say UGA gets the guy from Dallas or from TTU.

It’s amazing that fans forget that these are real people and real jobs. No different than any poster getting an offer from another company. Not everyone wants to pack up their families for the same position unless there’s serious incentive, so of course they’ll take the raise and stay put. If I’m comfortable where I am, I’m not moving to another state to an uncertain situation unless it’s for a much better job, and once my employer chooses to match, case closed. Similarly, contrary to the post by “starring Mark Richt”, Grantham (nor anybody) would look at UGA having made offers to other DCs and feel spurned, especially when he’s been untouchable thusfar. He’ll do what makes the most sense careerwise. How many posters would turn down a better position at a better company just because they might not have been the first choice?

Grantham would be a fine pick, as fine or better than some of the college DC’s they were looking at before. The difference is that when you hire a pro guy, you can expect he’s using it more as a stepping stone – maybe he turns it into a pro DC job, or a college head coaching job, so he’s less likely to stay for the longhaul, whereas most college DC’s only have one job they’re looking at – college head coach.

Grantham kinda worries me, NFL guy with little experience at recruiting. (at least since his MI St years) As a DC you’ve gotta be able to get into these kids living rooms and speak their language and also say all the right things to their parents. His defensive scheme may be the best, but you’ve got to be able to bring in some talent to make it work. Great NFL coaches aren’t necessarily good college coaches and vice-versa, ie. Spurrier, Saban.

Grantham: “From 1996-1998, coach.”

CMR: “All right. So next you joined the Colts as their DL Coach. How long were you there?”

adawgfan,

i would have to agree with your points. although garner is our recruiter each of the postion coaches & coordinators play an important role in recruiting. i think he brings god schemes and x’s and o’s to the position but his recruiting impact might be minimal early. i hope that we don’t get embarrassed again with another rejection. although cmr isn’t talking it seems everyone thinks that grantham is next on the list and if he doesn’t accept then there will be even more pressure (and stupid comments from outsiders). let’s hope that if grantham doesn’t accept that richt has at least 2 other candidates waiting in the wings ready to ink and announce so this doesn’t extend any longer. it’s getting ridiculous how long this is taking.

I’m less and less impressed with Groh, not because he’s interviewing with the pro’s–which is a plus–but the more I look at his defensive stats while HC at UVa. And with the plethora of college jobs coming open late, I am sure he can make more elsewhere. Don’t let the whole “UVa’s paying him so we don’t have to” deal get you. Of course there are ways that terms and contracts that can be structured to ensure he gets paid well. It will just be a delayed payment so that he can collect his UVa money. For example, a huge buyout if he is fired in the first few years, and a much higher-than-average guaranteed salary when the UVa money runs out and you do actually have to start paying him. It really doesn’t save money over the long run, but it might give a school like Tech a little longer to get Gailey, Hewitt, et al paid off before assuming new debts/salaries, etc.

I really believe that both Richt and Johnson will make good hires for their respective programs. Richt and UGA are suffering from overexposure and he has been wise to go to ground recently. Johnson has been wiser still in keeping things quiet from the beginning. I take Johnson at his word that he may give a rising star a chance and that ultimately he will make a decision based on the best fit for the program. Johnson has never given any of us reason to doubt his word. I maintain that Wommack was not a bad risk at all, and when he did not quite work out, Johnson let him go. At least he wasn’t assaulting players, violating NCAA regulations, or mouthing off all the time.
