Virginia Tech finally gets it right on third trip to Atlanta
On their third try, Tyrod Taylor and Virginia Tech finally won a football game in Atlanta on Thursday.
Having lost to Alabama in its season opener in the Georgia Dome, then returning here following a five-game winning streak, only to get dropped this time by Georgia Tech, it’s safe to assume that whole burning Atlanta thing must have passed through somebody’s head at Virginia Tech. If not several heads.
But alas, the Chamber of Commerce can breathe easier today. They didn’t lose Blacksburg.
“If we lost tonight, we weren’t coming back,” coach Frank Beamer cracked.
Gaining some measure of superiority for the ACC over the SEC — at least for one night — Virginia Tech belted Tennessee, 37-14, in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. The result accomplished two things: 1) It will keep Tennessee out of the top-25 rankings, thereby minimizing any gloating by coach Lane Kiffin (hey, go with it); 2) It almost certainly will push Virginia Tech (10-3) into a top 10 finish. Beamer can only imagine what might’ve been this season, if Hartsfield Airport hadn’t been such a gateway to Hades for them.
It’s a wonder Virginia Tech didn’t pass on the invitation to return to Atlanta. The Hokies basically were eliminated from the national championship race in the season opener when they lost to Alabama, 34-24, in the Georgia Dome. They won their next five, but then came back to Atlanta and lost to Georgia Tech, 28-23.
Equally surprising was that when Virginia Tech accepted the bid, their fans didn’t mind coming back. The school’s allotment of 17,500 tickets disappeared in like seven seconds. When you consider the number that came down for the Alabama game and the small allotment that sold for the Georgia Tech game, bowl president Gary Stokan estimates 53,000 fans traveled to Atlanta this season.
“People thought we were crazy for inviting them back,” Stokan said.
Actually, it’s stunning how popular this game has become. This was the 13th straight sellout. Next year’s Chick-fil-A Bowl somehow is already only 3,000 tickets short of a sellout, and the teams haven’t even been announced yet.
Think about it. If Stokan was really evil, he could pit Vanderbilt against Duke next year just for chuckles. Of course, then he’d probably be out of a job. Or a sponsor.
This bowl has come a long way since its days as the Peach Bowl in Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. One miserable reminder: The 1985 game between Army and Illinois was played in rain and mud and conditions so dreadful that even Dick Bestwick, then the Peach Bowl’s executive director, said: “The bowl can’t exist status quo. If things go as they have, I would question its reason for existence.” And he was the guy who was selling the thing.
Its current incarnation might be the greatest remainder of what the college bowl season used to be about: Good teams. Intriguing match-ups. Happy and content fans who viewed college football’s post-season as a reward, not an aggravating and illogical exercise in futility (read: BCS).
Virginia Tech? Sure, they’d come back. Georgia fans watched what they’re missing: Bud Foster’s defense. The Hokies held the Vols to five yards rushing, 240 total yards and shut them out in the second half. They also sacked Jonathan Crompton six times.
Tech jumped to a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter on two touchdown runs set by freshman Ryan Williams (one set up by an interception). Tennessee scored the next two touchdowns to tie it. The first on a four-yard touchdown run by Montario Hardesty, which capped an 80-yard drive. The second was a two-yard pass from Crompton to Denarius Moore.
Noteworthy about the second touchdown is it was set up by an interception by Janzen Jackson, a member of Tennessee’s Convenience Store Holdup Trio. Two other players were kicked off the team. Jackson was reinstated, I think because Kiffin determined he believed they were just going to an after-hours library.
Back to the game: The turning point came immediately following the Vols’ second touchdown. Virginia Tech began a possession with 18 seconds left in the half. Quarterback Tyrod Taylor completed a 63-yard pass to split end Jarrett Boykin to the Vols’ 4-yard-line. The clock ticked down to zero. All of the Tennessee players left the field. But officials put two seconds back on the clock after checking replays, and the Vols were forced to come back out and watch Virginia Tech kick a gimme field goal, making it 17-14.
That was it. Virginia Tech scored 20 consecutive points in the second half. Suddenly, Atlanta wasn’t such a bad place.

Great Job Vols! 7-6 what a year. Didn’t deserve to be there . Team is getting wiped out. No QB coming back and Eric Berry is gone. Looks like another nail biter next year. Monte Kiffin’s combover did look fantastic in high def though. Can’t wait for the NCAA to nail there tails.

The Hokies play in that second rate sorry ACC but the only thing they got right was the drawing by playing big moth Lame Kiffin and the stinky Vols. If the Hokies had to play a real teams in Peach Bowl like Dawgs then Hokies lose like before to Dawgs.

Yeah Baby, ACC stomps another SEC team. Tenn looked like a high school team compared to Virgina Tech. Of course VT couldn’t handle the mighty jackets earlier this year. This makes the dawgs look pretty bad because they were absolutely demolished by the VOLs earlier this year. ACC is superior baby !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 37-14 could have been much worse.

Jeff, Like I said on the game blog, I have always had the greatest respect for the UT progrm, Even though I am a UGA grad, bleed RED and BLACK ,and want to beat them in the worst way when we play them, I am ashamed for the SEC tonight! I was pulling for UT all night ,and for Coach Kiffen to brush off a legend of a Coach, Coach Beamer after the game was a disgrace. every year, in bowls, top tier acc teams play mid to lower tier sec teams. that the acc wins of few of these matchups is expected, that they lose as many as they do is embarassing for the ACC. Do you guys really think GT could handle Bama? Do you honestly believe Clemson could play ball with Florida? I don’t. I think LSU/VT would be a good game, but that’s about it. Face it, GT couldn’t even handle a really bad UGA team, and yes, they were really bad (something I as a fan am not proud of). All that said, I was particularly proud to see UT get spanked tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!! UT is better than Lane Kiffen, he is an embarassment to their school and to the SEC. CMR and Damon Evans have failed to hire Foster and Chavis, both of whom would make excellent DCs. They missed out on Koenning and Smart obviously rejected the job since we are pitching offers to Foster and Chavis. They missed out on their top four picks. Based on Foster and Chavis’ comments, they were interested, but UGA let LSU and Va Tech out bid them. To the folks in Athens: STOP DILLY DALLYING AROUND GET ON THE PHONE AND MAKE CHAVIS AN OFFER HE CANT REFUSE! THIS HIRE IS TOO IMPORTANT TO NICKLE AND DIME. DO WHAT IT TAKES TO GET THE COACH YOU WANT AND DONT LET THESE OTHER SCHOOLS OUT BID YOU! a large investment in a quality DC will pay off in the long run.

I don’t really hate uga in and of itself. I have grown to hate the loud-mouthed fans that bark as if they have anything at all to do with play on the field. I have grown to hate the uga fans that taunt other fans. I have grown to hate the totally uneducated fans of uga (even if they did graduate from that place).
I am so very glad that they now taste crow and will seemingly be on that diet for quiet a few years. Maybe they will learn a little humility from this. Maybe they will learn to lose (and win) with class. Then again, maybe pigs will learn to fly…..

Man, I tried to pull for tenn (SEC), but my heart just wasn’t in it. Lame kiffin has made tenn worse than fl now. I’m glad they got spanked, especially since i live in E Tenn and I get to watch the VT folks talk smack to all the vol fans at work monday!
You acc guys shouldn’t brag too much since it was the #2 & #3 acc teams paired against the #5 & #8 sec teams. And we know how the #1 team fared against the #6 Dawgs (30-24!).
Still, Lame embarrassed ut and the sec with that showing. ut loses a lot of seniors this year too so they’ll probably be rebuilding for a couple of years. Let’s see if the ut fans gives kiffin a pass if they have a losing season. Doesn’t take long to get those East Tenn folks riled up!

I, for one, am pretty impressed with the ACC this season. ACC fans have every right to be proud of their conference, and GT fans deserve their trip to the Orange. And I hope, as a Georgia resident, they clobber Iowa (and keep Big 10 fans in their place). But, to say the ACC is superior to the SEC is out of line, and everyone knows it (including reasonable ACC fans). ESPN wouldn’t have paid the SEC $12 Billion for broadcast rights if their was a better conference. If I was an ACC fan, I’d be a little jealous of that, but I don’t think I’d be stupid enough to argue superiority. The SEC has dominated all conferences in the regular seasons and bowls for almost two decades. And I think that will be reflected agin this season, when it’s all said and done.
Now, about some Dawg fans, like Hairy Dawg. There’s no doubt, to me, that he/she is a devout fan. But, there’s little doubt this person ever sniffed a college class, especially English. And, boy, you need to back off the booze if you’re going to make any sense about your views. As a fan of these blogs, it gets frustrating trying to sort threw the tons of garbage to find a few insightful comments about college football. Thanks for the opportunity to vent.
Now, congrats to VA Tech for their huge win on prime time TV. Congrats to the ACC for their showing this season (looking better than the PAC 10, Big 10, and maybe the Big 12), and good luck to the rest of the fans who are waiting to see their teams play, Happy New Year to ALL… and GO DAWGS! And, it should be “Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl”.
But the bowl was “bought” outright by Chick-fil-A from the Atlanta Sports Council.
Gary Stokan is president of the Sports Council and the Chick-fil-A Bowl Committee.

The ACC boosters on here who say Tennessee is the # 3 team in the SEC haven’t looked at the records. Going into the bowls, Bama, Fla, LSU, Ole Miss had a better overall record than Tenn, and 5 other teams were tied with them at 7-5. That does NOT make Tenn the third best team in the SEC. That puts them anywhere between fifth and tenth. Only Vandy and Miss St had a worse overall record.

The SEC is next to last in bowl standing this year. Only the PAC 10 has been worse. This clearly is a 2 team conference and both Florida and Alabama almost lost to Tenn, so they aren’t really great teams either. Both of them can easily lose on a given day. Tenn may be the best of the rest and they were clobbered by Virginia Tech.

In his defense, Kiffin was trying to get to the locker room to check on Jonathan Crompton who was later hospitalized with concussion symptoms. You could even hear CLK in that crowd “where’s Jon?”. So, he gets a pass on the aftergame handshake incident.
Otherwise, as a UT alum and dedicated Vol football fan for years, I gotta say I am not proud of Kiffin. To me he is the Uriah Heep (Not, the band, the Dicken’s character) of the SEC. It’s too early to really evaluate his true coaching skills, but his behavior in the public eye is reprehensible and that by itself is bad for UT even if he does eventually turn in a winning football team. He should look to Beamer for an example of how to be successful AND a gentleman at the same time.

UT alumni will not be happy with the devastating blow out to VATech. Blame Kiffen is now going to face them and the fact that his recruiting practices are under major scrutiny from the NCAA. I am a family member with a UT board member that is a Knoxville merchant and he dropped that tidbit during the holidays after a few adult beverages. Kiffen WILL BE warned by men close to the Athl Dept.
Next year, they will go around 7-4 and the alums will insist on coaching changes and he will be gone by year 11. It has begun and that loss to ACC will not rest well with the $$ boys of UT.
UT continues to be a laughing stock of the SEC. Ole Rocky Top was mum last night in Atlanta town. UT was humiliated by V ATECh who has been blown out recently by LSU, UGA, Auburn, Bama. UT was humiliated on nationwide color TV. HAHAHAHAHAHA

David, it’s good to see a Tennessee fan who admits to being embarrassed by Kiffin’s behavior. I think the bit about Crompton was an excuse for snubbing Beamer who had just thoroughly outcoached him. Crompton getting hurt is on Kiffin. He shouldn’t have been in the game throwing the ball in the last 2 minutes. Most coaches would have taken a senior, particularly one who went through as much as Crompton, out of the game during a series so the crowd could acknowledge him. Not Kiffin, he left him in against a Virginia Tech defense that was manhandling his offensive line.
And then after the game Kiffin talked about a lack of talent and depth and said he had to get back on the recruiting trail. Way to support the kids who have busted their humps all year for you Lane.

Next season will be another 6 or 7 win season for UT, yr. 3 is where Kiffin’s future is determined. If he signs more top-15 classes he should be around a 9 or 10 win season in yr. 3. Unfortunately the schedule gets tougher next year when we pick up oregon and lsu and drop ucla and auburn.

Va Tech should have been in the Orange Bowl. They were and remain the class of the ACC. They did play our champion head to head and lost. SEC played your champion head to head and won. That should pretty well define the season.
UT had a lot of seniors also. So does UF, Auburn, and Bama. Should be an intersting year coming off. Hats of to Va Tech for a great game, though they were greatly superior from head coach down to water boy.

The reason for Richt being a great coach is the Christain faiths. Arrogants back ends like Lame Kiffin dont know how to Christinizes the players, but instead offers fat womens. tenn is the 7th best team in the sec..ala,fla,uga,lsu,ole miss, south carolina,tenn, then ky, ark,aub all about 8,9,10 in any order there. uga losing to tenn was a fluke game after getting the lsu win taken from us by a shotty sec officiating crew. and if tenn doesnt miss that wide open td pass there in the 3qt its a different ballgame…but va tech was supposed to win that game as they are the better team. the acc though as a whole is no where near the sec conf. the sec top 5 teams would give any acc team a game and would win at least 3 of 5. you cant say the same thing about the acc.the acc top 4 would be lucky to win 2 games against the sec top 6…

UT (not) : It’s not the ‘hires’ that bother me. Not at all. I just think he isn’t running a tight ship with a proper message for the student-athlete in Knoxville. In essence, he’s the CEO of all Tennessee programs associated with sport and any and all that befalls it can be laid on his shoulders, good or bad. UT (not) : Nope and yep. It’s up to Hamilton to enforce the message and make it clear that guns, drugs, alcohol will not be tolerated and drivers licenses are required to operate a motor vehicle, etc. Look at the majority of players coast to coast. They behave. It’s a small minority everywhere that don’t. Now, I’d be a bit more concerned with what a coach like Calipari brings to Lexington due to his fabled and factual background than one that has been concocted through media bias. Pearl and Kiffin will give kids a shot at life and redemption. It’s up to Hamilton to make them understand and lay down the rules that must be followed. Failure to do so may/will result in expulsion depending on circumstances per individual. The AD gets no pass, nowhere…

The SEC IS a strong football conference –stronger than the ACC at present. But please give VT credit… They are one of the best coached teams in the country, and they had a relatively young squad this year. You can laugh if you want, but I can see Va Tech playing for the national championship in 2010, with both Tyrod Taylor and Ryan Williams as possible Heisman candidates. Christy Hanson I read you earlier commnet about Coach Beamer assulting one of his players…you are very mistaken and need to get your facts straight. You saw the same thing I saw on the quick flash to the sideline and bench…that was Def. Line Coach Charlies Wiles trying to motivate one of his players who just had Hardesty stopped in the backfield but did not wrap him up leading to him breaking free for a TD. That was not Coach Beamer. I coached with both of them and Charlie is a physical former All- American who played OL for Coach Beamer at Murry State. I have played basketball with him many times and got banged around. He plays ball with his players and has a good relationship with his players. You more than likely did not see the piece on the Liberty Bowl where Skip Holtz and his staff were playing football with their players (a tradition he learned from his National Championship winning Dad). Perhaps you should get a better understanding of D1 Fb before you go condeming coaches and especially make sure you are targeting the right coach. You are way wrong and Coach Beamer was not invovled in the “flash” you saw anyway. Check your facts before you jump… Go Hokies. The SEC is currently strogner than the ACC but not in that game! Find someone else to chase…

Next season is “rebuild city” for UT. All-Everything (andn Peach State product) Berry is gone: how many tackles did he account for? They’re also getting some big holes at RB and O-line if I’m not wrong.
Meanwhile, UGA and UF won’t be the only teams with BIG Q-marks at QB (who’s UT’s new QB?). UGA has a veteran line back, an outstanding group of RBs, lights-out receivers and kicking game. UF is losing All-Everthing, Greatest Player to Ever Play or Even Think About Playing Football Tebo (hyperbole fully intended) plus a bunch of other talent but they are LOADED in almost every facet.
Thinking UT will actually struggle in ‘10. Look for them to be a toss-up for 3rd or 4th in the East depending on how good/bad SC is..

Put me down to definitely “agree to disagree” as they say with some on here.
There are legion accusations, innuendo, mud-slinging etc. on these blogs–not to mention writers, TV commentators, etc. that consistently lay blame at the COACHES feet in a given instance (or, “multiple instances” in UT’s case) rather than immediately taking ADs to task. Should UT’s AD “do something?” Damn straight! However no coach at any program should ever get a “pass.” So we are to understand that Kiffin is a victim of “media bias” and all that has been said about him and his minions is concocted. Hope I misread that one.
Meanwhile, VT looked impressive in their bowl game: played as a real team and with discipline and class. Too bad UT (and South Carolina) didn’t represent their conference well though at least UT faced a legitimate, power program. Spurrier has lived and coached long enough to be irrelevant.
UGA looked pretty good against Tx A&M but it took a while. They don’t look like the team that pissed it’s pants against Florida and Tennessee but I’m not forgetting that they imploded against Kentucky not long ago either. Meanwhile, the search for a DC isn’t turning into a PR campaign in Athens.
