Predictions Lite: Jackets, Tide, Gators win Leach-free bowls

bowl gamesWeekend Predictions was put to bed a few weeks ago, the result of a slight misunderstanding by my late ghost writer who typed that Florida would defeat Alabama in the SEC championship game after I specifically relayed to him via Ouija that the Gators would be so thoroughly dominated that Urban Meyer would retire, unretire, ponder, brood, mull, retire, unretire, declare sweet victory after I guess the greatest football practice in the history of the universe and eventually was told to stand in a dark closet for three hours by Lubbock Commandant Mike Leach.

Anyway, back to Predictions. I wasn’t supposed to dispense any more financial advice this season. But I’m already getting tired of Melky Cabrera jokes and we’re jumping into the heart of the bowl season  — yes, after the Independence Bowl; shirts still available here! — I had nothing else to blog about this morning. So we give you Absolute Financial Locks Lite.

Just remember how this works: I give you the winners. But it’s your job to find them. The others were just miscommunications.

♦ Orange Bowl (Georgia Tech-Iowa): The Jackets celebrated for so long after last year’s win over Georgia that they were still hung over by the time they got to the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Then they were dismembered. Fortunately, they only play a Big Ten team this time. South Florida has never seen so many Winnebagos. Jackets cover 4.

First title: LSU. Second title: Alabama.

First title: LSU. Second title: Alabama.

♦ BCS Championship (Alabama-Texas): Asked whether he can relate to Meyer’s stress issues, Nick Saban cracked, “I could work here and take the stress, or I could retire and go home and work for [wife] Terry and take the stress there.” I hope he enjoys the BCS trophy. Because it’s the only thing he’ll be grabbing for a while. Tide covers 4.

(Remaining cast, in order of appearance)

♦ Chick-fil-A (Tennessee-Virginia Tech): Lane Kiffin arrived in town early. With Tennessee’s “Orange Pride” coeds on holiday break, he had to pick up several Hooters waitresses on the way to his next recruiting trip. VaTech covers 5 1/2.

♦ Outback (Auburn-Northwestern): Wasn’t it about a year ago we were making Gene Chizik jokes? Even Auburn running back Ben Tate said this week, “Most of us were like, ‘Who is he?’” Well, he would be the guy going to a better bowl game than Georgia or Tennessee or Ole Miss. Oops. Tigers cover the 8.

Rejoice, Georgia fans. At least one of these guys is going.

Rejoice, Dogs fans. At least one guy will be going.

♦ Capital One (LSU-Penn State): I never really believed John Chavis was a serious candidate for the Georgia defensive coordinator’s job until he was asked about it Wednesday and responded to a reporter, “Nice shoes,” or something like that. Dude. If Chavis is really looking to bolt LSU after only one year, what does that say about Les Miles? Penn State covers 2 1/2.

♦ Gator (FSU-West Virginia): Sorry, but amid the everything-stinks-until-we-have-a-playoff screams, this is pretty cool. It’s the Bobby Bowden Retirement Bowl. He left West Virginia on his own for Florida State, where he won two national championships, then had his legs broken in a board room. Football just ain’t what it used to be. Noles win in an upset, but take the 2 1/2.

I know I used this picture the other day. But it makes him look like such a dork, I had to rerun it.

I know I used this picture the other day. But it makes him look like such a dork, I had to rerun it.

♦ Sugar (Florida-Cincinnati): It’s Tim Tebow’s last game. It might be Urban Meyer’s last game. Unfortunately, Brian Kelly already had his last game — the Cincinnati coach left for Notre Dame. There goes that upset pick. Gators cover 12 1/2.

♦ Alamo: (Texas Tech-Michigan State): For all the people criticizing Texas Tech for firing Mike Leach, which of these three things do you not have a problem with? 1) Minimizing that significance of a player’s concussion; 2) humiliating a college student in front of teammates by making him stand in a closet; or 3) seeking a restraining order against his superiors who suspended him from the bowl game while they tried to sort this mess out? All I know is, whoever runs the Alamo Bowl is buying drinks for the house and screaming, “I am somebody!” Forget distractions. Raiders cover the 7 1/2.

The Schultz locks of the week has been my favorite column for years, even when you referred to my boys as the ‘Screaming Chihuahuas’.

After moving to Birmingham I got a real appreciation for how much I enjoyed my hometown paper, the good old Urinal / Constipation… Charles Hollis (who does the predictions for the Birmingham Snooze) has no sense of humor & pretends that there is no gambling line…

I’ve been running a prediction game online for several years – have done NCAA for years & added NFL this year.

I’m pretty sure I’ve beaten Weekend Predictions every year – still love the column though.

Navy defense under Johnson ( averaged 36 points and 439 yds allowed in 2007)! ” I didn’t bring any of those players with me to Tech” He didn’t bring any of those players but he did bring the same defense it seems! Iowa has no offense but finds one playing Tech! Tech loses close game.
Don’t be surprised how close the Bama and Texas game will be! Vols and Bengal Tigers will win.

Jeff: Not sure if you’ve seen the video of Leach’s lawyer talking to a Lubbock sports reporter about the infamous “closet” and “electrical room.” If you haven’t, go watch it. To call either room a “closet” or “electrical room” is a joke.

Leach is going to win the lawsuit against Texas Tech. Just watch.

Jeff, you’re always making me laugh, but you tend to do it better on the College Football picks. I will sorely miss that until September.

Was that a subtle Urban jab by Saban there? Mike Price was sought for his opinion on the stresses of coaching, but he was in a back room socializing with the Orange Pride girls.

I agree with you on the Chavis thing. Never really saw him leaving for the Dawgs, but the non-answers were a bit puzzling. One of two things – he’d really like to leave Miles for more money, or he’d like to stay with Miles for more money.

I like the picks except for the FSU/West Virginia pick. There will be matchup problems there. I do hope that FSU wins one for Coach Bowden, but I just don’t know. Everything else is down the line.

I think that the Falcons will beat Tampa Bay. Tampa simply doesn’t have anything to play for and the Falcons will view this as a playoff game. But here’s what I think would be entertaining: I want to see the post-game reactions. I wonder if there will be Falcons players that would celebrate back-to-back winning seasons with jubilation or relief. I mean, having back-to-back winning seasons is something that EVERY OTHER PROFESSIONAL SPORTS FRANCHISE HAVE EXPERIENCED. Except the Atlanta Falcons. So to celebrate, you’re celebrating the fact that you are now like every other sports franchise! Mediocrity is bliss!

What I would like to see from Falcons players and fans is relief. Glad the stigma’s off your back. Now you can breathe.

We’re on a mission in Miami,….Go Jackets! And let’s say goodbye to Texas Tech football as they exit the stage. Coach Leach put them on the map,..and with this PC knee-jerk reaction from their administration,..here’s hoping they enjoy their time back in the abyss. Here’s question,…what was the kid doing with a cell phone at practice? I bet there’s more to the story about his lack of playing time and poor work ethic. Here’s to the James family,…typical “little-leauge” parents,….good job in ruining the Red Raider football program,..are you happy now?

I disagree on all the ACC picks. FSU loses, GT and VT win, but do not cover. After the first four ACC bowl games this year, I’m shocked the Vegas lines have not moved away from ACC teams – and I’m an ACC fan.

I’ll also take LSU – PSU only played two good teams and lost convincingly to both.

Correction Manny – the Carolina Panthers have never had back-to-back winning seasons. Admittedly though, that’s not a great hook to hang your hat on if you’re lifelong Falcons fan.

Two predictions I hate myself for even thinking. GT blows out Iowa and Texas slips by Alabama. The Big 10 can’t keep up with the speed on GT’s side and I think Texas has enough on defense to keep it close with the tide and win a squeaker. I hope I am wrong on both accounts.

20 years ago or longer and Mike Leach wouldn’t have even been in the news for this. But we live in a softer, gentler, more sensitive nation today run on a theory of political correctness. I really hope that didn’t hurt anyone’s feelings. A almost said “I really pray that didn’t hurt anyone
s feelings.” But I knew the word “pray” would offend people.

Soon there will be a point cap on football games. Once a certain high score is reached the scoreboard cannot go any higher. We don’t want to embarrass anyone.

Don’t feel bad about the SECCG pick, JS. Did anyone pick Bama? The consensus seemed to be, “It’ll be a close game between two heavy-weights, but ultimately the difference will boil down to quarterback play.” Well, it wasn’t a close game but the difference was quarterback play. Fortunately for me, you among others picked the wrong quarterback.

I think Bama’s game plan against Tebow will be the same as the one they’ll use against McCoy:

1. Keep him off the field.
2. When he is on the field, contain him and make him beat you with his arm.

Gool luck Bama and RTR!!!

Interesting court decision yesterday, in small print on the back of this paper, where a former Georgia football player cannot sue the Georgia Athletic Department because it is an arm of the state as is the coach named in the suit. Does anybody believe that? Mike Leach certainly didn’t feel part of that organizational chart, I am not sure he felt he reported to anyone, the University was there to serve him. After watching that documentary on “the U” where Coach Jimmy Johnson sounded more like a thug dictator than a molder of young man, a picture develops of rogue coaches, a picture continued by Leach with dozens of arrogate over paid coaches that should not be allowed near a higher educational facility. Back to Georgia which really doesn’t have that problem, but does have the disconnect between the purpose of education and football. Seems to me a good lawyer could blow the Athens judge’s opinion to kingdom come, of course you need another venue. The old picture of football being a part of college curriculum is so very outdated, it is a freak event sponsored by everybody but the college and thus the state. In a world where we love catching a politician taking a boondoggle trip with tax payer’s money and then think we sponsor the likes of a Leach or Johnson in that same system is high comedy in the least.

Hey Chin — I know this might not work for you since you are into conspiracy theories, but one of the players invited one of the girls to come see him play after they met at a football camp. One of the girls is from the area and drove her friend home for the weekend. Nobody at UT knew they were going, and no, they didn’t have “Come to Tennessee” signs like the NY Times incorrectly reported. You might also note that the Memphis blowhard hoops coach who told the Times the wild tale about flirting chicks refuses to talk to the NCAA. Why? He lies. This same guy told whoppers several years ago about the Arkansas basketball program. An NCAA investigation there also led to nothing.

I think the vols will pull out a close game. I don’t see Auburn winning. It just appears that they start off quickly and other teams make a couple adjustments and then shut them down.

Stay tuned for the next chapter in the Leach drama. I have a feeling Texas Tech just bought themselves a BIG settlement in a law suit. They have no chance to win and Leach will be coaching somewhere else hardly scathed at all by this event. The person who is going to end up a fool, and looking for work, will be Craig James.

You’re right, Auburn was gifted into that game–but I feel like they deserved it–first year coach, new coordinators, etc.

I know you could say the same about Tennessee, but they also had Monty coaching defense, which will guarantee you wins against weaker teams–take a look at Tennessee’s staff salary compared to other first year programs!

This isn’t to bash Auburn but to point out that the bowl games are not about placing the best team in your game. The Outback had their choice of South Carolina, Tenn, Kentucky, and maybe Ole Miss. Of that group, they took a team that is coming in on a 2 game skid, losing 5 of it’s last 7 with a losing conference record. The Outback has always been roge in that sense, but their only objective and that of most bowls is to sell tickets. Bring on the playoffs!

From what Ive read so far, it seems Leach hasnt been to amicable to the powers that be at TT. Regardless of what happened, he should have been more open with the admin if he really wanted to keep his job.
I have to agree with the AD that he cost himself the job.

Don’t see any reason why UGA won’t be ranked to start next year.

10 starters back on the offense…I think we’ll be pleasantly surprised with our Freshman QB…though his inexperience will probably cost us at least 1 game…just as with Stafford. Hopefully get Sturdivant back for a whole year and healthy. If Durham returns from injury and plays it will give us another experienced wide receiver. Hopefully Da’Rick makes the grade(s). BoBo learns that the way you win is to run the ball.

Defense will be the big question mark no doubt…some big time recruits coming in on that side of the ball…loss of three DTs to the NFL will hurt. Curran takes the paycheck but hopefully Rashad comes back to better his draft status.

We’ll know more after the D staff is in place and the spring game is played…but see no reason we can’t improve exponentially on that side of the ball. Talent is there.

We’ve started out ranked most every year this decade…pundits will put us in there somewhere.

I don’t know what all my fans in dawg nation are talking about……but me being an intelligent coach and person there’s no argument about this……I’d take Tech’s 4 shinny National Championships any day over that silly one-on-one record between UGA and Tech…..just plain common sense I tell ya!

Question for all you Mutt fans—–want some cheese with that whine? Jeff’s making picks about the big games and SUPRISE—-Mutts are at home drinking natty lite—-their coaches are preparing for their next swing and a miss on their D/C search. I would tell Mutts to break out their basketballs, but they don’t know what that is. They’re in suspended animation until signing day—-they’ll then take their long winter’s nap until SPRING football. Oh, shake them awake when they finally hire a D/C.

ACC fans, use up your Shreveport jokes now because the SEC has dropped the Independence Bowl and picked up the Gator Bowl. The Big 12 is also refusing to travel to Shreveport anymore. The new conferences? The ACC and Mountain West.

Regarding Techs past bowl games…last year is just unexplainable to me,much like Alabama getting waxed by Utah.

The previous games that they lost, Tech was just awful, no excuses.

If the GT fans paint their @sses white, will it provide enough UV protection to wear a thong on Miami Beach?

$1.4 million,

Remember, driving in the HOV lane with an inflatable “date” tonight does not qualify you as a high occupancy vehicle.

I hope Tech continues to win their crappy conference. It’s about time our SOS stopped being dropped because of having to play them every year.

“If Chavis is really looking to bolt LSU after only one year, what does that say about Les Miles?”

Jeff, Chavis is staying and you should have known that the only reason he sidestepped the questions during the news conference yesterday was because he wanted to stay at LSU but make what Georgia was offering. How many coaches use another offer to get a raise?

I don’t blame him and I’m glad he will be on the sideline in Death Valley next season.

What Mike Leach could have done

December 31st, 2009
2:38 pm

When the player showed up with the sunglasses, Leach could have said that as a precaution, we are going to ask you to stay home during the bowl game. And then sent him home for the holidays.

Then when crybaby helicopter parent starting whining, it would be Leach turning the tables around and talking about safety, and for the safety of crybaby we don’t want to expose him to any unnecessary stress that traveling to the bowl game might cause.

What would crybaby helicopter parent have to say then? You’re making my child’s safety too high a priority?

Interesting how so many bloggers are trying to defend the indefensible actions of Mike Leach. It wasn’t about mistreating “Craig James’ son.” It was about mistreating “a player with a concussion.” Leach goofed. And his ego caused him to goof again in how he handled it.

I see where Chavis got a raise…Leach will definitly land another job sooner than later…GT will definitly win tues….Tide takes care of Tex….Stanford,OK is turning out to be a good game…Why is the price of gas sneaking up again?…Tebow wont make it in the nfl..Even though i hate Va Tech I hope they kick UT’s butt…although i think itll be close.

Just some thoughts on new years eve
Happy new year everyone.

What Mike Leach could have done

December 31st, 2009
3:31 pm

Ted Striker, it’s not about defending Leach for what he did. It was pointing out what he could have done. If he sent the concussed child home for the holidays, there is no way crybaby helicopter parent could have played the safety of my child card. In fact Leach could have played it against him.

Where’s the love for the Vols? Hope VA Trendy beats us? Newsflash, Monte has had an entire month to prepare for the Hokies. They’ll only score on special teams and maybe a pick. That kinda reminds me of…45-19. Make sure my hedges are trimmed before we come to Neyland East in 2010!

My wife is from TN and ive had to look at the smirk on her face all year about the beatdown they gave UGA.
I wish GT was playin UT in the Peach bowl myself. I know the orange is prestigious and all that, I just wanna see GT play them, its been a long time since they played.
Tebow might work out in a wildcat setup but not a qb
