Doesn’t anybody want to be Georgia’s defensive coordinator? (UPDATED)

Excuse Mark Richt if he's wondering what's going on.

Excuse Mark Richt if he's wondering what's going on.

(UPDATE BELOW)

At some point, Mark Richt will hire somebody as Georgia’s new defensive coordinator and he will assure the entire Bulldog Nation that he got the man he wanted all along, because that’s the way these things are done.

But it can’t be too comforting for Richt to know that all he really has accomplished so far is to get significant raises for coaches on other teams.

First, Virginia Tech’s Bud Foster turned down the job. As a reward, he was given an annuity worth up to $1 million. Now, it’s pretty apparent LSU’s John Chavis was offered the offered the job and turned it down because athletic director Joe Alleva said, “We did what we needed to do to keep him.”

That meant a significant raise: from $450,000 a year to a reported $600,000. And Chavis has been at LSU for only one season.

There is no telling where Richt turns now.  Dallas Cowboys defensive line coach Todd Grantham, who coached under Foster at Virginia Tech, remains a possibility. But Grantham, who also coached for three years at Michigan State, has been in the NFL since 1999 and it’s not known if he would want to come back to college. His only tenure as a coordinator came with the Cleveland Browns (2005-07) and had mixed results.

Regardless, it’s never a good sign when a program is turned down multiple times by job candidates, and Richt doesn’t seem any closer to hiring a defensive coordinator today than he was when he fired Willie Martinez.

(UPDATE: I thought you folks would chuckle at this. LSU put out a press release on Chavis but never referred to Georgia, only an unspecified SEC school. So Vanderbilt offered him a job?)

CHAVIS TO REMAIN AT LSU

BATON ROUGE – John Chavis, who was pursued by another school in the Southeastern Conference, will remain at LSU as the defensive coordinator, head coach Les Miles announced on Thursday.

“John has done a great job and he’s a key member of this staff,” Miles said. “John is a man of great character and a tremendous football coach. We’re glad he’s staying.”

In his first year with the Tigers, Chavis coached an LSU defense that rated No. 3 in the SEC and No. 12 in the nation in scoring at 16.0 points per game. The Tigers have allowed just six rushing touchdowns all season, the second-lowest total in college football this year.

“I’m staying at LSU and I’m excited about remaining here,” Chavis said. “LSU is a great place. This is an outstanding football program and I’m happy and honored to be a part of it.”

Chavis joined LSU last January after spending the 14 years as the defensive coordinator at Tennessee.

“We think John Chavis is one of the best defensive coordinators in the country,” LSU Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Joe Alleva said. “We felt like it’s important for the future of the program that we make this investment.”

Chavis will receive an increase in compensation, which will be announced at a future date.

Your “leads” crack me up . . . doesn’t anyone want to be UGA’s DC? For the record, Foster was not offered the job according to this rag you work for. Looks like Chavis was offered the job. So, you’re batting .500 which would be good in baseball but sucks when it comes to journalism.

This is what happens when you seek highly qualified candidates that already have jobs at great programs. The UGA job is not less than LSU, but it’s not better than it either. Made no sense to be talking to Chavis unless it was known that he wanted to leave. I would say the same thing for Smart as well.

I just don’t think the turn downs are that big of a deal. Now, if we were going after Tech’s DC and he was turning us down, I would be worried. :-)

Give me a break Jeff. You’re talking about 2 coaches who would be making lateral moves to come to GA, so money would be the only incentive for them and their current employers steped up to the plate.

I would expect Smart to get a significant raise as well, or expect to see him in Athens.

I don’t know the coach’s name but the DC at Utah should be getting some serious looks. He doesn’t have half the talent of UGA and managed a top 20 defense against all those high scoring offenses. It doesn’t do our ego any good to be turned down by so many DC’s but most of the time these things work out for the best.

Short Bus: contrary to your jaded (most likely Tech) view of UGA, UGA is pretty sweet job in a very cool town with a program that is (not even arguable) one of the best 10 to 15 in college. Now, I can see why Foster and Chavis wouldn’t want to make moves to be there. I promise there are dozen others that are qualified and would jump at the chance.

How many people did Alabama talk to and get turned down by before they got Saban? We’ll be fine.

UGA 75- Right on. Ego hurts a bit, but in the long run, we’ll get a talented person to run the defense. I think most would have been happy if Chavis (or Foster) had taken it. I would have. But honestly, is Chavis really the best out there? Probably not.

We’ll end up hiring a relative unknown and then people will really start to freak. Patience. BVG was an unknown.

I disagree Jeff. The fact that Richt is going after Bud Foster and Chavis tells me that we are willing to go after the very best. So they turned us down, atleast we took the shot. Very frustrated…Seems UGA was not offering enough money to reel in Foster or Chavis…..800 K to 1 million per yr should be our offer to a top DC…..less money if good DC–600 K and for new DC 325K per yr…………….For these top guys….their present school is not going to roll over and say ok–go ahead and hire our top level DC…of course they will offer raise and you know darn well if the raise offer and our offer are close…they are going to stay unless they hate it at their school. …Foster has chance to be HC at Va Tech when Beamer retires so it would take 1 million yr money……Chavis has experience and has a NC so…maybe would have taken 800 K….but you have to expect the present school to raise…..so UGA has to be willing to out bid……..And we look really bad when we get turned down twice……it is bull to stay the job was not offered—it was understood in the talking…i or the other school would not be giving out raises…………….So to Pres. Adams and AD Evans to you want to win and are you willing to do what it takes to get the best DC in the country.

They have a company that is talking to agents, the only reason we hear about anyone is because someone saw someone somewhere or there is some kind of rumor. Most of the time those rumors are started by the coach or the agent because if the AD’s of that said school here’s about it and hears a figure… they are either going to step up within reason or they are going to say no in which case that coach can then let the people offering the job know that he’s either interested or would prefer to stay there. This is all about posturing. Chavis got a 150,000 dollar raise this year was LSU really THAT impressive? No. No they weren’t, but LSU had to protect thier guy as did VA Tech for that valuable continuity. It’s all about holding the payee’s feet to the fire.

Jeff, I agree with you – no one that UGA is currently going after would really want this job. If you look at the way the fans treat the coaches – in just one down year – is pathetic.

I personally do not want to see UGA succeed, but if I were in Richt’s position (besides killing myself), I would look for someone who has proven themselves (to a degree), but not necessarily at an SEC team. As a back-of-the-envelope exercise, I would start with the defensive coordinators at these teams, in this order:
1) Air Force
2) Central michigan
3) Boise State
4) Rutgers

It doesn’t take rocket science to come up with a list like this, and I really have not looked at the DC’s at each of these teams, so one of these could already have been taken.

UGA is not the prettiest girl in the room, contrary to popular belief. UGA needs to find someone who has somewhat a proven track record and is going to find UGA attractive. The current list of suitors does not and would not find UGA attractive.

For that matter, maybe GT might want to look at one of these as well, but I don’t think GT needs to be looking for one just yet.

I like laughing at your columns Jeff, but you are really reaching here. There are several SEC schools looking for DC’s; Joe Kines just retired from A & M after the bowl; lots of schools are looking for DC’s. Let Coach Richt handle it, that is why he makes the big bucks!

The money involved is why I could give a flying flip about coaches being fired. Once you become a coordinator in major college football you are making CRAZY money. If you can’t live for several months while you search for a job on a 400K – 600K a year salary you’re living far beyond your pay grade. These guys get more than enough time to iron out issues. If they can’t do it they can’t do it.

If there was anything other than these boring bowl games going on right now perhaps you would not feel the need to write 3 stories a day about the same topic. You go from the Garner blog to this one in less than 24 hours. You are like a 5 year old on a long drive, ” are we there yet, are we there yet”. Richt said it will happen after the NC game, so chill out for chrissakes.

Obviously Richt is somewhat hamstrung by the timing of the bowls and NFL playoffs, but that should be encouraging that his targets are still coaching this time of year. If Smart or somebody else still playing were not the target but it was still a big name, then he would do Georgia a favor by naming him now, while the countries attention is still on college football. After the NC game the announcement will have less impact, perhaps that is Richts plan. If the hire is not a big name why put it out there when every major network is looking for college football news to report. Slip it in when college football is down for a long winters nap.

Either way, its ridiculous to speculate and say he is failing miserably in his search when he has already told you no announcement is forthcoming for days. And no its not a loss if he gets turned down by DC’s at other top notch schools when the money is equal. GA is a good job, but so is LSU, Bama and most SEC jobs.

Thrilla, the rumors keep circulating because these writers have no real info to report, so if some guy in the airport says the rumor, it shows up on 50 blogs and all over the “news”, the DC involved then has to answer the question at press conferences and the vicous cycle continues. Everybody just chill, the announcement will not come before Jan 8 so everything said on these blogs is wasted air until then. If the hire is terrible, then RIcht will have to answer for it.

The only time the Tech-UGA football game is important is when Tech wins. If UGA wins, the game is no big deal. Just ask Paul Johnson. Of course, when Tech broke nearly a decade-long drought last year, he thought it was important enough to have rings made to commemorate the victory.

I’m not worried at all about the DC search. Last I heard, Florida hasn’t hired a DC either! Doesn’t anyone want to be Florida’s defensive coordinator? Hell, we don’t even know who their head coach’ll be next September.

But that’s tangential. I’d rather Richt take his time and get someone who’ll really work than try to get the biggest name he can as fast as he can. From what I’ve been able to piece together, I think Richt has his mind set on an NFL guy (maybe this Grantham [spelling?] character), but has to wait until after whoever’s team is knocked outta the playoffs (or after the season’s over, in the case of Van Gorder) to really talk with him.

I could be wrong, but that’s what my gut’s telling me. On-the-field results matter more to me than getting “a name.” Go Dawgs!

Really Jeff

What you stated in your post is very true. Jeff likes to stir the pot and act all innocent when he initiates racial or any other type of war on his post.

I prefer journalism that is informative rather than antagonistic. Journalism would require work on his part, you know, really getting a story on WHO the DC is rather than acting like the punk GT fan that he is by making statements that the DC at UGA can not be filled.

Seems to be the way anymore in the media. If you can’t get the true story, make up something just to get your name out ther!

jeff, you are a moron. At least be accurate in your journalism. You have NO clue whether Richt offered the job to any of these men. Of course Richt is going to inquire with a bunch of candidates to guage the market available.

Do you REALLY think koenning was listed higher than Chavis on Richt’s “board?” Of course not, so there is NO WAY koenning was offered the job ten days ago and then Chavis later on.

You should know that leaks happen to get themselves a raise.

Also, your facts on grantham are wrong. Look it up. He was the DC at Cleveland when they came out of nowhere and went 10-6 and had a top 12 defense.

He also coached under Saban at Mich. State; and he coached under Beamer. He would be fine as the DC at UGA.

Just like the false stuff you said about Limbaugh a while back. You hear bits of something and then paint with a broad brush.

You are very ignorant.

Richt may have to drop down to Division II to find a DC. Watching the “coaching” coming out of Athens the last few years it would be a “lateral move” for a Division II DC. (note-an average coaching staff can win with Stafford, Moreno, Greene, Pollack, Mo, etc.)
A continual “slide” in coaching and performance of a team does not make for an “attractive” offer. Sad!

To the rest of you — I always find it amusing that when I write a positive Georgia story, I get ripped by Tech fans for being a Georgia home. And when I write a negative Georgia story, I’m a Tech homer. I’ll say this one last time (well, probably not last time): I have no agenda other than to give my opinion, which is my job. Didn’t go to either school, not from here and I have no financial ties (well, one slight one: My son goes to UGA but he’s on the Hope scholarship, thank God). I understand that you guys/gals are passionate, and that’s what sports are all about. But some of you need to move past the whole, he’s-out-to-get-us thing, because it’s just not true. As far as the Georgia coaching search, sorry, but you can play with semantics as much as you want. Fact: two defensive coordinators could’ve had the job and turned it down. Did Mark Richt shoot high with Foster and Chavis? Yes. Good for him. (Presumably he’s also shooting high with Kirby Smart, but I’d still be stunned if he left Alabama. He’ll get a fat raise too.) But it doesn’t look good. That’s all I’m saying. .. And now, you may resume discussing my secret agenda. I need to write a pre-game Chick-fil-A bowl blog.

It’s easy to pick out the Tech fans that are coming into town.
They are all men, no women. Most are middle aged, fat, pasty and smelly with thinning hair combed over the tops of their crusty heads. They are wearing outdated bermuda shorts, dark, dress socks and sandals. They have on festive gold, short sleeve shirts emblazoned with that moronic, little bee and whatever greasy crap they had for breakfast. The rest are late teens, early 20’s, same attire but with acne infested faces and green teeth. They walk around babbling and giggling incoherently, gawking at the women and trying to get them to pose for pictures. The majority are Middle Easterners and Asians.

The old, fat ones keep hitting on me and giving me their room numbers.

Only problem with hiring coaches at UGA is UF will be in the mix hiring new coaches also and it could be interesting. With UF having better seasons of late, they would be alot more attractive and it will be alot harder for UGA to hire the quality of coach it wants.
Money is not an object at either school so everyone that says that UGA wouldn’t pay $600,000 per year is wrong, Atheletic Dept works from donations and ends up with a pocket full every year so that money thing is not the problem.
I think honestly with CMR he’s already said he’ll have a new coach by 2nd week of the new year, he’s already hired one and it’s just a matter of waiting until all the Bowl games are over with to announce who it is.

Seriously. This conversation and speculation should stop until after the bowl games and NFL season. Mark Richt had his guy weeks ago. He is a guy of class and is waiting for their current teams season to finish. The notion that “nobody wants the DC position at UGA” is stupid. The phones have been blowing up in Athens ever since Willie was fired. This is a big time job at a big time program. I’m sorry, but I haven’t heard any viable source state that UGA OFFERED the job to Foster nor Chavis. Majority of these raises are coming from M. Richt not giving the media any inside info, and sports reporter going back to their living rooms to come up with rumors that ‘make sense.’ I don’t think Richt ever talked to Chavis. I think Richt may have contacted Foster, as you do with all preliminary candidates, but I doubt he offered him a contract as well. Richt is looking for a great recruiter, and Chavis nor Foster fits that mode. So its hard for me to believe that he offered those two a position. UGA is the largest program out there at the moment who is seeking a DC, so media has be looking at UGA. I truly believe Richt’s refusal to give any details means that he knows who he has coming to UGA in the spring. He is just waiting for their season to end.

Right on the mark, Jeff. This insistence on getting a “big name” smacks of administrative and/or booster interference in the hiring process. Suntan is having to appease somebody, because surely he isn’t misguided enough to think that he can throw a big salary number out there and suddenly these top D/C’s are just gonna come running. The job is just not that attractive at this time for a top-drawer, well-established college coach. Kirby Smart’s UGA connection is the only reason he MIGHT be. But my question now, is simple—-who is calling the shots in Muttville?

Jeff — I don’t sense a bias from you, or your peers, other than a bias for car crashes — real or ginned up. I think you guys love to stir the pot, see problems when none exists, over interpret, exaggerate, etc., I also understand that part of the job of a columnist is to incite, provoke, etc., (not necessarily in negative ways) and that is typically easier with controversy or negative angles. The issue I have with your take on this is you guys want it both ways. Had CMR hired an unknown who was from a lesser tier program or division of CFB, you and your peers would skewer him. So, he aims big and goes after two guys at big time programs to take lateral moves to come to GA. The one guy has been at his current position for less than 1 year and the other who has been firmly entrenched for 2 decades, so there are extenuating circumstances with each. These programs match or exceed the financial offers (presumably) made by GA. So, your conclusion is this makes GA look bad. Then you wonder why CMR and other coaches are more public and forthcoming with the media on the process. Irrespective of the outcome, you guys seem to go into these things looking for the car crash angle — that is the real bias.

The other bias you guys have is for the guy who is brash and a loudmouth (see Kiffen, Spurrier, CPJ, etc.,) While lower key and often more accomplished coaches who make for bad copy come under criticism. Again, I suspect this is due to the fact that your profession looks for the easy angles. Whatever it is, it is pretty cynical and doesn’t “look good” (to borrow your phrase) for your profession.

Jeff,
This is an excellent article. Not something we want to hear but it is true.
Coaches are turning down more money, every year, because they no about the carousel that exists in the SEC because of fan pressure. Addtionally Mark Richt fired the best man in his wedding from UGA fan pressure. The coaching fraternity does not take this lightly. Richt will find a coordinator but it probably won’t be an established DC. Remember Richt himself was an OC when UGA hired him.
You are going to take some shots from writing this accurate and truthful article Jeff, but so did Jesus. It hurts us in the Bulldawg nation to read these kind of facts.
Happy New Year!

Gator4life, you sir (as a Florida fan), have way bigger problems in Gainesville. UGA needs a DC and a couple of position coaches. UF needs a DC as well, but add to that a head coaching indecision and recruits flipping as a result, not to mention losing TIm Tearbow. The offense dropped off considerably when Percy Harvin left, what do you expect next year without “super man” as you guys call him?

Agree with another blogger in that this is a huge decision for UGA and CMR. No need to make a rash decision, but instead pursue the people that you feel can best fill and serve the position. I agree that Kirby Smart might not bite but worth investigating if CMR is interested which I would think he very would be. Remember we went through this same thing in asking interest in a head coach once before when Dooley was AD and people played us to get fat raises. But I feel patience is a virtue and the right man will surface. I recognize recruiting is in full swing but UGA has few scholarships left to offer and this is much bigger than losing one or two prospects. I have a lot of confidence in CMR in finding the right guy.

My problem with the phrase “it doesnt look good” is the implication that it reveals some hidden issue. Jeff, you really want to know why Chavis and Foster might have turned UGA down? Here’s your answer. UGA is known to be incredibly stingy when it comes to paying assistant coaches. When Damons said he would open up the wallet to get the best coaches in here, he was lying through his teeth. It was nothing more than lip service. Richt is hamstrung because UGA and the people in charge won’t pay serious money to an assistant coach. So Richt is hamstrung. If Richt had wanted Bud Foster or Chavis, he should have gone after them hard and given him an offer that couldn’t be refused or matched. But Damon Evans won’t do it. You’re not going to get a name DC from a big time program to come to UGA for the money UGA is offering.

The fact that Va Tech, a school that has nowhere near the money or resources that UGA has, paid Foster close to a million and UGA won’t come close to that, is downright shameful. It’s especially shameful considering the insane amounts of money UGA spends every year on new construction.

I don’t know why so many folk’s are taking exception to the statement that “its a fact that 2 DC could have had the job and decided not to”. Lateral moves for about the same money from one big program to another and decided not to (uproot from a long standing, potential future HC job in one case, and take a 3rd job in 3 year in the other). I don’t really see the big deal, even if that were fact. I don’t blame them. Talking to existing DC who would be making lateral moves is not like just snapping your finger.

All of you are so funny! I know for a fact that CMR did not offer Foster or Chavis a job – this is a game that all of us agents play – anytime a coach (any coach) is fired we call our friend in the media and advise them to put out rumors that the person we represent is in discussions for the job – this in turn causes the school to panic and offer our client more money -which in turn gets us more money – believe me – CMR did not talk to Foster and he did not talk to Chavis – do you remember Chavis did not commit about the UGA DC offer – why? b/c his agent told him to say that – we teach all our clients to say that – more $$ for them is more $$ for us – what do you think is bettere 10% of 400k or 10% of 65k – you do the math and you will see why all the rumors get started – it is and always has been and agent game to get their clients name in the rumor mill so they can get more money – CMR has his man and you will be suprised when you see who is coming to UGA – you guys will be ok – trust me.

Also, why not write an article about why those other jobs (i.e. staying at Alabama, LSU, South Carolina and taking Illinois job over UGA) seem much better jobs than coming to Athens, Georgia? If Richt fails to have a good year in 2010 when he can’t point to a tough out of conference schedule, he very well could find himself on ESPN as a broadcaster rather than as a coach. Why not openly discuss this potential in an article since you espoused in this very article that you are not biased and also supposed to give a critical opinion about the very school your son attends. If you truly get around the state of Georgia very often you certainly will find the masses supporting UGA because their sons, daughters, cousins, nieces, nephews, or even their sister in laws went to UGA and the basis for their support of that program. GatorChomp-”Everyone knows that unofficially the Dawgs tested the waters several others!..Also, why not write an article about why those other jobs (i.e. staying at Alabama, LSU, South Carolina and taking Illinois job over UGA) seem much better jobs than coming to Athens, Georgia?…This, of course, never happens for us Gator fans. We all actually attended the great school in Gainesville.

I can’t tell if you’re joking or not. Your post was truly that ridiculous. I’m going to go on the assumption that you are being serious. First of all, “testing the waters” is not an offer. Second of all, a reasonably intelligent person would understand that when you aim for the best possible candidates you are going to have some who are not interested. Smart, for example, would have to be extremely motivated to leave Bama for anything other than a HC position. He knows that, we know that, Richt knows that. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t at least discuss it with him. After all, if you don’t ask the answer is always no. And by the way, if you really believe that all UF fans are grads then I’ve got a bridge you might be interested in buying. I’ve seen more toothless, illiterate fans of UF than any other team in the SEC. North Florida is full of ‘em. If all of these clowns actually attended UF, well that’s just speaks volumes about the quality of UF grads. But what difference does it make if fans attended the school or not. I’ll be the first to stand up and say, I did not attend UGA. I went to Stanford. But I’ve been a Dawg all my life, so what difference does it make. Should I have attended UGA to cement my allegiance to the football program? I guess UF has a 100% acceptance rate for UF fans. Either that or UF fans who don’t get accepted immediately shed their support for the football program.

Richt has already shown a distorted view of the world by thinking, like most UGA fans, that successfull coaches from programs more successfull than UGA would want to come to UGA. Explain why the coach of the Steelers would want to leave to coach, say, the Redskins ? How does this mental defect occur ? Is Richt now going to do this for the third time ? Or a fourth time ? This Kirby Smart “coming home” crap must make somebody feel good but it probably isn’t Kirby Smart. It would take an idiot to leave AL for any college coaching job unless its a head coach job which if Smart is serious about what he’s doing he will demand. This type of thinking is really an insult to Smart. Can we set up a blog where no reader is allowed to drink Koolaid ?

It seems pointless to post on this messageboard, since there do not seem to be many reasonable people here. Jeff’s job has clearly devolved to provocateur — write something that will create controversy and generate page views. Any effort to actually report what’s going on is beside the point these days and perhaps Jeff is not capable of uncovering any real facts. Does anyone remember the angst over the Alabama head coach search or the Florida head coach search? All the same insipid speculation and anxiety existed then as well. Those programs clearly found the right coaches. No one here really knows anything of substance about the search or the hiring process, but why let ignorance of any facts stop you from asserting your opinion about them.

What a lame update on a tired subject! Please! UGA is one of the top schools in the country. Chavis and Foster didn’t “turn UGA down” they simply benefited from Richt’s pursuit of them and chose to stay at the school they are currently at. CMR will get a top notch DC and everyone will be happy. None of these schools want to lose their DC if he is a good one so they are willing to pay him great $ to keep him. And they sure don’t want UGA to get their man either cause they know with a great DC, Georgia is one step away from National Championship contention.

Jeff I think the problem is not that you are biased against UGA. Its that this really isnt a story. You did what media do which is take something small and make it big. You said “lots” and then backed it up with 2 examples. You ignore how much agents are involved. Also, it was stated that Foster turned down UF too. Heck, Nix turned down UF. How is that not a huge story. This paper tried so hard to suck up to Meyer and now that he isnt the prettiest girl on the block his negative stories are glossed over.
The fact is Richt will get someone that will in all likelyhood be better than Martinez. That is unless he gets the loser from Tech or Ted Roof. My big concern here is that Tech hires Martinez which would be a significan upgrade from that pathetic defense they have now.

First of all, I don’t understand why Richt went for Chavis — he has only been at LSU for a year — if he wanted him, he should have hired him last year — I think that was a stupid move by Richt — talking to Foster was a good move. To all you LSU fans: I still think Les Miles is overrated as a coach — you will eventually fire him because he will not be able to beat Saban — he won with the talent Saban left him. I think Ginger is right: we need to go out and do what UT did last year — hire a DC and pay him top money in the $800,000 range or higher if we need to. There are other good young DC’s out there — we just need to be patient.

Here we go with the gossip and drama again. The truth, a forgotten concept, is that no one really knows who Coach Richt has offered. You always have these GT fans, I mean reporters suggesting that UGA is struggling to find a replacement. That is ridiculous and lacks creditability. You need to start focusing on valid facts like UGA’s domination over GT. First, some claimed that Mark offered Coach Van Gorder. Never happened. Then it was Coach Foster. Coach Richt spoke with him but he never moved beyond that. Coach Chavis and Foster were just fueling the flames of gossip to gain raises. Yes, you were nothing more than a propaganda puppet to gain them more money. You got played. Coach Richt has never set a time table nor established a sense of urgency. Some sort of accountability has to be established with reporting blatant gossip. I see all these recruiting talk about UGA. What recruiting ranking were Rennie Curran and Clint Boling? Get a clue. Just think, we fired a defensive coordinator that helped shutdown the “great” GT offense. That tells you how GT’s game is not considered to have a major impact on anything at UGA. It’s just a game to win at the end of the season. Yes, GT is insignificant to UGA. Go DAWGS.

Going after a big-name DC (Smart, Foster, Chavis) is both gutsy and stupid. Gutsy to put yourself out on the line knowing the probability of you ending up on the short end exists. Stupid if you know in advance the DC isn’t unhappy where he is and all you have to barter with is salary increase. Why is that stupid? Because the HC at that respective school is going to increase the DC’s salary to beat you out (ex: Foster, Chavis). This is really common sense and I can’t imagine why CMR is approaching this hire this way because he certainly isn’t a stupid man. All I can conclude is that he’s under pressure to go for these big hire names.

I still contend that the best option is to go for a young up-and-coming DC from a small school somewhere.

VA Dawg 85'

It’s a poker game at this time in regards to attacting a DC from a tope program. Unfortunately Kirby Smart cant be high on the list in regards to probability of returning to Athens. Do you think UGA would offer Chavis IF WE NEW SMART HAD SERIOUS INTEREST in RETURNING to Athens? The answer is a no brainer. NO. So, yes I’m a little surprised when I saw the Chavis story unfold. For LSU to print an official statement shows Chavis was offered 100% the job and turned it down.
We will get a fine DC but the fact is we probably won’t get what we really wanted. So, like anything else in life we will probably have to settle for our #3 pick. Not bad and its a top 3 pick. I just don’t understand WHY we don’t have some people banging on the door. It’s a tricky game. UGA is very, very fine school and in Virginia it’s a top school of interest with University of Virginia, University of North Carolina and UGA being 1 of the top three for high school students looking at Universities. I was really hoping that there was a plan like this: Kirby Smart says he will talk with UGA but won’t until after bowl game. And that a source close to Kirby said to UGA that he has a serious desire to return to Athens. Kirby won’t jerk our chain and he has ties to UGA through a couple of Alumni groups tied to UGA. So, I’m guessing that the word is he staying at Bama. I hope I’m wrong. Happy New Year. Finally, wasn’t it great to see Tenn. get beat by Va. Tech! (I’m a UVA fan but rooted for Tech because as my children know and say the “T’s” are are loosing to Tech YEA!!!!!!!!!!!We don’t like “T’s or Florida!” Go Dawgs!

Why all the fuss? There must be good prospects for the DC job that are not prominent names. Must a “name” or “proven record” be bought to satisfy the fan base? In that case the fans or bloggers are attempting to play coach. Thankfully I don’t think Richt will succumb to that pressure. Much of the blogging rhetoric is hot air anyway. There has to be good talent out there that is not necessarily high profile that would be a good fit and productive. Richt will do what’s best and if it doesn’t work out he’ll make the change again until he finds the right person. The Media Microscope focused upon the process is amusing but worthless.

Jeff Schultz: Thank you for the disclaimer. But I must say that an association with a Georgia Dawg in your son will eventually have its consequences. I am from GA but now reside in SC. Objectivity is a difficult task but I must say that in your neutrality you do a pretty good job of stirring the pot of controversy–which is part of your job. Jim Powell, who is now one of the Braves announcers once worked for a local Columbia radio station (This is before he moved on to the Brewers). He used to infuriate me to no end because he portrayed himself as one of the biggest Gamecock homers to come down the pike. Some time later I learned that he was a UGA grad and his dream job was the job he now has. The Rams have moved on to St Louis and so have you. You no longer have the Coliseum but the Classic City is not too far away! Oh, and by the way, so that I can get my digs in: Hey Techies, have you realized that UGA can have twenty-thousand no-shows and still have seventeen-thousand more on hand than you have when Bobby Dodd is filled to the gills?

Reptillicide

Schultz you’re full of it. Uga has allegedly been turned down once. Foster was never far enough along in the process to turn anything down. This “doesn’t anybody want to be georgias dc” crap is the reason why people call you a tech homer. Only a tech fan would say something that stupid. So start being a little more reasonable and you’ll stop getting blasted.

The next DC at Fla will be a pariah. How could anyone come in and improve on what Strong has done? And with the losses on that side of the ball? No poven guy who has a decent job will want to jump into that situation. At least the new DC at Georgia will have a chance to significantly improve.

Do you really think that just out of the blue with no cause or reason whatsoever the DC’s mentioned suddenly just stared getting raises left and right??????

Anyone hear a SINGLE ESPN commentator come out against Craig James? Of course not. Great reporting there James homers. Yeah, Leech was the media darling and had zero history of player abuse until he crossed Craig James.

ESPN said Richt offered the job to Foster. Richt said he did not.

ESPN’s Kirk “Mr. Bias” Herbsteit, claimed Georgia didn’t deserve the Natl Cahmp in 2007 even though Georgia was ranked #3 when #1 and #2 lost. Huh? Herbstreit has pictures of him jumping up and down at OSU games. Bias? Me thinks so.

Ever heard of an agent? Duh. Welcome to college sports eggheads. Agents lie, make up false rumors, during Dec. before Bowl games, so their coaches can get raises. That’s hw it works. No one has supplied proof Richt ever offered the job to anyt of those 3 clowns. Didn’t happen. Richt has his pick of any college DC in America. You’d have to be an idot to not take more money, work with the most loyal coach besides Beamer, who wins more than anyone else in the toughest conference, in the best recruiting state. Smart’s a Georgia guy, has family here, wnet to UGA, his wife played for UGA, they love UGA. No way Smart stays at Bama and tries to improve the #1 defense when he can come to UGA and anything is an imporvement for the D. Saban’s last DC split in 2007 for the same reason Smart’s leaving–Saban is a jerk. Saban is like Meyer, they quit every 1-5 years and head somewhere else.

When you seek highly qualified candidates that already have jobs at great programs, and you persue to hire that person for a job well done, the current school who was not paying the big money, now realize they need to give this person a raise and keep him here. Coach Richt is not going after a average coach, he wants the best, but other great programs will make it difficult fo CMR to hire a DC anytime soon.

I’m amazed at how the UGA fans posting are still in denial. Unofficially and officially the UGA program has been turned down by 7 DC’s. Maybe 6 if Ellis was never approached which I seriously doubt. He is on the record as stating he would stay at South Carolina. Why make the statement if Georgia had not sent out feelers? The denial comes from leaving the pressure Richt will face if he has another 4 or 5 loss season next year without having the strength of schedule that he had this year. Why would a DC with any ability wish to be thrown into the cauldron that could be brewing in Athens next year? Even if my beloved Gators crash and burn next year…what about the UGA program makes anyone believe they will fill the void? Much more likely that Tennessee or even South Carolina steps in to fill the power vacuum than Georgia. They will again have a first year QB with little to no experience and a first year DC. The players will take some time to gain experience at both the QB position and the new D philosophy. Shoot, UGA could beat us next year (with us having a subpar year) and still lose the East by a fair margin. Nothing about the UGA program seems very intimidating by those of us looking at the UGA program from the outside. Amazed at the thickness of the blindfolds on many of the UGA fans if they honestly think a DC hire is their only weakness. I am much more concerned by the quality of coaching at Tennessee than the current job been done in Athens.

Its not that Garner doesn’t want it, he is not being offered it. Dumb a$$ where there is smoke there is fire and if it was just b/c of agents then every decent DC across the nation would say they have been contacted about UGA to get a raise, not just 3. I also do not believe that an “official offer” has been made to any of them. The part that you are to dense and stupid to realize is that its only considered an “OFFICIAL OFFER” when they have agreed to accept it. Every school does this to keep from being publicly embarrassed by “officially” being turned down, in our case multiple times. If Chavez would have said “yes”, then the offer would have been official, because he said “no”, no offer was ever offered. Wake up retard.

The Chick-Fil-A really took a step back last night. A bowl of this level should demand higher quality play. You match up a top 25 team against a mid-level SEC team. Where’s the logic in this ? I am a UGA fan and I would love for the UGA athletic department to think out of the box a little. Apparently the search has remained relatively local for the defensive coordinator position. This guy at Oregon State should get a look from Coach Richt. Mark Banker is his name I believe. With less talent, he has consistently helped Oregon State field a competitive defense. He also seems to be very cutting-edge on his philosophy. In other words, he doesn’t coach scared and his players seem to play agressively. I wish Coach Richt could read this article. I read that he is a Massachusetts native, but has coached his entire career on the West Coast. The head coach at OSU is Riley who stated that the strength of Coach Banker is his innovation and the discipline of lanes his players are taught to have. This seems to be the precise problem with UGA at times. The Dawgs are not disciplined and held accountable for their responsibilities. I have alot of faith in Coach Richt, and he’ll get the right guy, but sometimes the high-profile guy isn’t the answer.

Why do the folks in Las Vegas have so much respect for the SEC, did they all graduate from UGA? For some reason the SEC is favored in EVERY bowl game left. I hate the way these experts thinks the SEC is so great. It should not matter that GA TECH lost on its home field to UGA, because UGA lost to Kentucky. Of course that means that Kentucky is better than GA TECH. How many Ga Tech graduates have bet their house that Tech will beat Iowa? The same amount that will bet their house next year win Tech goes the Athens? Next year UGA will be favored again to beat Tech, by the folks in Vegas. I hate the people in Vegas.

How stupid are you really? And by the way, I think that there are a good number of coaches that would love to coach at a school like UGA. Do you not? Or can you get your head out of Coach Paul Johnson’s bottom long enough to consider that? And by the way, did you ever coach high school, college, pee wee, etc.? I think not. I do not think that you have ever written a positive story about GA. That said, keep thinking that Tech and Paul Johnson is your savior. I can’t believe that you would make such a big deal about UGA or Mark Richt not already have named a D Coordinator. What would you have done. You would have already taken care of this? You wouldn’t have waited until after the bowl season . . . thinking that the replacemtn surely would be coming from someone playing in one of the bowls? Surely, you are not that stupid. What about your savior . . . the great Paul Johnson . . . is he not replacing his D co-ordinator? Oh, maybe that is not as big a story as UGA . . . or maybe, you don’t want a negative spin on Tech . . . go figure.

I really don’t think we ever got turned down by Chavis, Koenning(spelling? but it doesn’t matter anyways), or Bud Foster. I really believe that all three of them (and we’ll find more who do it later) will rumor themselves to be approached for the job in order to secure for themselves a raise. It’s not that they’re saying no to UGA, CMR never approached them. They’re just trying to make more money. It’s a business you know. In Chavis’ case, 150,000 raise. Anyone who wouldn’t do that for belated Christmas present to themselves is dishonest in their own right. The bowl game to me showed that CMR has an outstanding understanding of all sides of the game of football. It showed me that he knows how to coach a team, and reinstilled confidence in me that he really does know what he’s doing. As much as it pains me to say it, I trust him and I’m resolved to wait for our good news either early this week or late next.

January 2, 2010, Associated Press

ATLANTA, GA: SEC officials have just confirmed that they will remname the conference beginning with the 2010 season to Season Ending Chokers in reaction to the 0-2 record in bowl games with the ACC and the loss of LSU to Penn State, bringing the league’s New Year’s Eve-Day tally to 0-3.

When asked to comment, Conference Commissioner, Michael L. Slive said, “This is a sad day for the SEC…er, the Season Ending Chokers, but we need to face the facts…our conference is simply not as dominant as out chest-pounding fans think. To be embarassed in front of the whole country and other conferences by the ACC teams and on New Years Day is truly a new low for us CHOKERS!”

And indeed most would agree, New Years Day of 2010 was quite a low for the Season Ending Chokers…more choking to follow.

January 2nd, 2010
9:36 am

Anyone that thinks the losses by lowly UT, KY and LSU ( a rough one, even I will admit ) is the true indication of the league’s prowess, is simply uneducated. LSU was w.o. the services of Chalres Scott. Aubun WON too. What did Miami do vs Wisconsin???? LOL. ACC is a joke.

Florida blew Cincy away and that shows how real the league is because Cincy was rated #3. Got it???

Besides, um, ah, WHO is playing for the NC for about the 5th time in 6 years??? Hmmmm!!

Bama is. If they are down, then LSU wins the NC and if they are down, Florida wins. Where and when has the ACC ever won that title? Answer: Clemson in 82. Gun Toters did win a partial NC in 90 tied with Colorado and Miami, depending on what newspaper you read back then.

Goooooooooooooooooo Dogs. Goooooooooooo IOWA. I sure hope Dwyer gets more than his usual 33 yds. HAHAHAHAHAHA

Obviously, the facts speak loudly, and it simply ain’t so, moron. LSU looked like they team they truly are…slightly better/stronger than average, but not much more.

cox only had 1 season as a QB. In a real conference Still threw a bunch of TD’s. If you expected cox to win it all while he was fighting Bobo’s bad play calling, then u are unrealistic. When good plays are called , like in the WIN over tech, then Cox made better decisions. Hell, one td got dropped . And in responce, I haven’t bragged about the Independance bowl win, but the grass wasn’t blue.

Cox outhrew Tebow in TD’s, head-to-head yards, outhrew the common teams they both player by 10 td’s, took less sacks, beat a top 10 ranked team, Cox crushed Tebow like a little bug.

One down season does not negate the great decade that the Dawgs had. Just like one good season does not paint over the crap that Tech has fielded this decade. 8 wins while rebuilding is great. Tenn rebuilds last year and goes 3-9. Tech musta been rebuildin for about 7 years til ol Jowles Johnson came along.

SEC has peaked

January 2nd, 2010
10:25 pm

Guys, we could be getting turned down, because the SEC has reached its peak. Let’s face it UGA has won a couple big games the past 2 years (especially the TECH win), but really have probably cycled through their high spot.

Urban waffling on his stay at FL is bad for the whole SEC, because it has been UF and Bama that have carried the SEC the past 2 years.

When you look at the bowl games, you do not see our SEC conference dominating the others….

We have bowl losses as of tonight and when you look at 3 of the ones we won, we were really handled by some average teams…

Tex A&M outgained us by over 100 yards (yet because they could not stop reloading the gun and aiming it at their own foot, we were able to win easily on the scoreboard).

Northwestern put up over 600 yards on Auburn and outgained Auburn by over 200 yards, but yet Auburn was able to squeak out the win in OverTime.

East Carolina manhandled Arkansas (WTF) and held them 0 for 13 on 3rd downs while having nearly double the 1st downs, but yet Arkansas gets by in OT because their poor kicker was 0 for 3 with the game on the line from inside 40 yards….

I am hoping my Dawgs get back up there, but we have been drinking the Kool-Aid if we think we are all that. The SEC wins over the ACC were nice on rivalry week, but rivalries have a funny way of working out. Consequently the SEC is 0 for 2 against that same ACC in the bowls.

I hope we get Kirby Smart, but allegiance to a school does not trump competing for a National Championship at Bama.

Yea, as soon as the bowls are over there will be at least 5 or 6 proven top 10 defensive coordinations who will be killing themselves to get the UGA job. They will be crawling to Athens begging for the job and will probably take it for nothing.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I would’nt wanna talk about it either. For future reference, if u ain’t gonna talk about “Then”. Don’t mention those world war era national titles. And if PJ is happy winning but not beating UGA , like Pricht suggested , then he should be fired . John Wooden is a hall of fame coach but look where losing to Michigan got him. Being a winning program but being inferior to your in state rival must taste like ass.

CMR is a bit naive to think an established, highly regarded coach will leave that job to come to UGA with its known defensive problems. It will be necessary to select a lesser known coach at a smaller school with high potential who wants to move up. That’s how Brian VanGorder came to UGA. In essensce CMR took some risk in hiring him, and he’ll have to do that again. Hopefully he’ll better luck than he did with Martinez.

Ok guys, lets get off this bash UGA thing. You guys are playing on Tuesday night and I hope you guys do well and play like the Ga Tech team that we all know you can be. Whether you are going or at home or wherever enjoy it. You have good coaching and good players so heres to you Techies.

As far as the SEC, looks like they have had a tough time this bowl season. Right now they are only 5-4 with one left to go. UT was an embarassment, and the ball coach apparently can’t get his team up for a bowl anymore. We did all that we could do, and that was to win our game. I expect the SEC will end up 6-4. I think that they were weaker this year, and the conference did a terrible job lining up the the bowls.

Good luck Jackets and we will see you in Athens in November.

By the way, the DC job will be filled and we will all be happy with who he brings to the staff. I’m expecting someone out of the box, but with a good pedigree

1) QB Rating
2) Yards

The reason UGA can’t get anyone to take the Defensive Coordinator job is because no one wants to coach a bottom feeder in the conference that actually believes they are good and wants to fire the coach every time they lose. You have got to have talent to win and UGA does not have talent. All these recruiting services don’t know their AZZ from a hole in the ground.

Ok Pricht, you are right your QB was out for a quarter, and your reciever did miss a catch. The best player on the UGA team was out for the game, and when you take out the #1 reciever in the SEC, that is a pretty good part of the offense. UGA did play a good game, but the best game that they played all year was against LSU. I don’t really think Tech played thier worst game, that would have been against Miami, or maybe Wake. Suffice it to say that UGA played better than most of our games, and Tech played down from most of there games. Most of you guys told us last year that it was all about who we were playing, and I think you were right. THis year though, we were the better team, without our best player

Most of their bowl teams have either lost or have needed overtime to win (Arkansas nearly lost to East Carolina – that’s East Carolina!!; and Auburn nearly lost in OT to NW; LSU couldn’t cut it, neither could S. Carolina; and UT got their butts kicked). That being said, why would these top assistants want to go to a second-tier program like UGA in a middle-of-the pack conference??

People that post on this blog need to rationalize a bit. Why in the he77 would we offer the DC position to David Pollack or Rodney Gardner? Neither have any experience as a DC and that would be a disaster. UGA needs a DC with a proven track record that can develop talent, can instill discipline, teach the fundamentals, and make in game adjustments. Dick Bumpus is the man for the job. Read his bio. We DO NOT need to promote a position coach. We did that with Wille and look where we ended up. Just my two cents.

You’re another scorned techie that just can’t help but to show your respect for the mighty Bulldog Nation by rearing your ugly head here. WE LOVE IT! Keep it up nerds. You just keep on telling yourselves that you’re every bit as good as UGA and the ACC is just as good as the SEC and sing koombaya all the way up the screwed up BCS system’s ass.

Saban is a winner. No doubt. But he’s also known to be an a@hole. Don’t be surprised to see Kirby here (where he went to school and played football) where his heart is. Same goes for Muschamp since Brown signed his long extension.

LOL … Preston must just type for his own comic relief from the desperation he feels .

Yeah … The Dawgs are going to pull a defensive coordinator DOWN a level from either of the two programs playing for all the marbles to do the same exact job at a mid level program .

Speaking of marbles … I think you dropped a couple ;-)

Nobody was EVER offered, Schultz. Calls were made, questions were asked… such as “would you be interested and if so, how much would you require?” These are questions you’re unfamiliar with because nobody has ever asked them of you. Kirby Smart won’t talk to us until after the MNC game because Saban would fire him…. everybody else here to fore has been a backup plan.

Crimson Crush needs to be more worried about keeping Saban in one place for more than a few years. Let him have a down year and have to deal with the Bama fans and alumni and watch him run faster than a roadrunner. MEEP MEEP!

Rod, it’s because of two things. They secretly love and respect the Georgia program and also because the city that their team plays in doesn’t have a decent media outlet to provide an outlet such as this to run their mouths on. You didn’t hear much out of any of them until the Willie years.

Crimson Crush

Yah yah yah … Saban is leaving … been there … heard that … got the T shirt . Face it skippy … Saban is home … for good . He won’t find another fanbase in college football that matches his own level of fanaticism for the game . I know it is a fervent hope to the unfortunate that Coach actually might leave (and rescue them ) but no knowledgable Tide fan I know worries one second about it . When Saban leaves Bama it will be to retire .

Put another way , Coach Saban leaving Bama is about as likely as either Will Muschamp OR Kirby Smart leaving a historical powerhouse program already running at the top level to take the same (actually lesser) job at mid level Georgia . In YOUR world that means there is “still a chance” . Everywhere else … it is just a pipedream ;-)

LOL … by the time I typed the first response Preston whips out three more snippets of buffoonery . Doesn’t take too long to manufacture one sentence replies if you don’t need to worry about facts or thinking and stuff does it Preston ? ;-)

You started babbling something about “three of the last four” and I assume you think you made a point . Somewhere along the way it was lost before you even typed it since you so kindly provided Georgia’s historical record against Bama on the page before .

Put into any real context any sort of slice and dice you try to manufacture that pretends Georgia even inhabits the same region of the college football Universe as Bama looks real silly ;-)

1) According to all REAL srouces in the know, Kirby Smart is STILL the frontrunner, and STILL very interested in being the Bulldogs DC after the Jan 7 Bowl game.

2) Richt would NEVER offer the job to someone who would turn it down. If you hear those rumors, they are simply NOT TRUE. Chavis and Foster were guys who were NEVER even candidates fore the position. Richt has discussed defensive philosophy with a lot of people.

3) If Smart changes his mind after Jan 7, Sanseri, Steele, Grantham, are on Richt’s short list and have all been contacted by Richt.

Mr. Kirby Smart’s the Guy…. Just so you know, Smart stated PUBLICLY during the media day today that he intends to stay right where he’s at for next season. After that, who knows. But why in the H E L L would anyone want to make a lateral move to a lesser program unless there was a head coach in waiting position for them? I mean c’mon…use some common sense…which you obviously don’t have much of. Here’s the link to the story since you obviously don’t research anything before you post it. http://blog.al.com/bamabeat/2010/01/kirby_smart_on_his_role_at_ua.html

Someone mentioned the DC at Navy, Buddy Green. He just might be very good choice. A great strategist and excellent disciplinarian. Our DAWGS looked very undisciplined defensively this year even when you consider the youth in the secondary. Some strong discipline could be a huge step in the right direction. Everything that I have read regarding him has been very positive. He also does not have a long tenure as the DC there and may be able to be swayed up more easily. I say, give him some consideration. He defense certainly blew out Missouri.

How about that Brooks guy from Kentucky – he is ‘retiring’ so offer him the DC job – he already has a statue and all the gold and diamonds one could own (or snatch from that evil, NCAA rule busting basketball coach) for picking up a morbid Kentucky program – now he could come back to the great state of Georgia and be the best DC since the late great Erskine Russell – we would even have fire and brimstone – something UGA has lacked with CMR! Think about it and it makes all the sense in the world!

Since when has ANYONE been offered the job? If an official had been made it would be all over the press and one has not; not just speculation. Coach Richt said it would be after the bowl games…that is Thursday…..right?

AceDawg

I imagine the hiring process is hard when Richt hasn’t had to hire an outside coordinator in years. It’s even harder when you are established and scrutinized more closely in who you hire than when you are a new head coach. I’ll stay optimistic that we get Smart or at minimum that we get an aggressive, turnover oriented guy. Richt definitely needs a guy that can run the D on his own so that he can work on Bobo and his EA Sports video game playcalling on offense.
