Doesn’t anybody want to be Georgia’s defensive coordinator? (UPDATED)

Excuse Mark Richt if he's wondering what's going on.

Excuse Mark Richt if he's wondering what's going on.

(UPDATE BELOW)

At some point, Mark Richt will hire somebody as Georgia’s new defensive coordinator and he will assure the entire Bulldog Nation that he got the man he wanted all along, because that’s the way these things are done.

But it can’t be too comforting for Richt to know that all he really has accomplished so far is to get significant raises for coaches on other teams.

First, Virginia Tech’s Bud Foster turned down the job. As a reward, he was given an annuity worth up to $1 million. Now, it’s pretty apparent LSU’s John Chavis was offered the offered the job and turned it down because athletic director Joe Alleva said, “We did what we needed to do to keep him.”

That meant a significant raise: from $450,000 a year to a reported $600,000. And Chavis has been at LSU for only one season.

There is no telling where Richt turns now.  Dallas Cowboys defensive line coach Todd Grantham, who coached under Foster at Virginia Tech, remains a possibility. But Grantham, who also coached for three years at Michigan State, has been in the NFL since 1999 and it’s not known if he would want to come back to college. His only tenure as a coordinator came with the Cleveland Browns (2005-07) and had mixed results.

Regardless, it’s never a good sign when a program is turned down multiple times by job candidates, and Richt doesn’t seem any closer to hiring a defensive coordinator today than he was when he fired Willie Martinez.

(UPDATE: I thought you folks would chuckle at this. LSU put out a press release on Chavis but never referred to Georgia, only an unspecified SEC school. So Vanderbilt offered him a job?)

CHAVIS TO REMAIN AT LSU

BATON ROUGE – John Chavis, who was pursued by another school in the Southeastern Conference, will remain at LSU as the defensive coordinator, head coach Les Miles announced on Thursday.

“John has done a great job and he’s a key member of this staff,” Miles said. “John is a man of great character and a tremendous football coach. We’re glad he’s staying.”

In his first year with the Tigers, Chavis coached an LSU defense that rated No. 3 in the SEC and No. 12 in the nation in scoring at 16.0 points per game. The Tigers have allowed just six rushing touchdowns all season, the second-lowest total in college football this year.

“I’m staying at LSU and I’m excited about remaining here,” Chavis said. “LSU is a great place. This is an outstanding football program and I’m happy and honored to be a part of it.”

Chavis joined LSU last January after spending the 14 years as the defensive coordinator at Tennessee.

“We think John Chavis is one of the best defensive coordinators in the country,” LSU Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Joe Alleva said. “We felt like it’s important for the future of the program that we make this investment.”

Chavis will receive an increase in compensation, which will be announced at a future date.

Its hard to say nobody wants the job, when it hasn’t been officially offered, discussions don’t mean offers Shultz! Poor reporting, take it from somebody in the know.

This negative article after article will come back to bite you for sure. Report facts, or is that too hard for the AJC to do? After next thursday, there will be a DC from Bama in Athens. Foster and Chavis were talked to about the job, doesn’t mean anything. Maybe they would or would not have been offered.

As with any job opening, you discuss with many potential candidates, ANY job, even yours.

Agents like to put the word out to get clients more money, happens every yr. Just ask the folks a TTech.

Tebow’s a rider, he don’t like to let others ride his back, but he loves to ride Leak’s, Strong’s, and Harvin’s. Tebow’s what we call a “Freeloader”, just a parasite. Tebow could have proved us all wrong against Bama. Tebow’s back wasn’t worth ridin’ gainst Bama. Tebow has freeloading parasite behaviors.

Wrong David Greene, Mark Richt won 1 sec title with Jim Donnans boys which was something Jim couldn’t do and then Mark won 1 with DJ Shockley and company which was Mark Richts boys. Not to mention Shockley saved your assss several times when you were having bad games that year.

CMR ’s Bowl wins really aint too impressive. Mich. State is a joke which is UGA’s sister school in the Big 12. Purdue is a joke,Wisconsin maybe be the only Quality Win , Fla. State aint the the Fla. State of the 80s and 90s,Hawaii what a laugher along with A & M. and Virginia Tech an ok win only to be tarnished by losing to both Vandy and KY that year. Not really any big wins there over big big schools with tradition or respect.

I guess we can not put all the pretense about the SEC being a tough football conference!!. Most of their bowl teams have either lost or have needed overtime to win (Arkansas nearly lost to East Carolina – that’s East Carolina!!; and Auburn nearly lost in OT to NW; LSU couldn’t cut it, neither could S. Carolina; and UT got their butts kicked). That being said, why would these top assistants want to go to a second-tier program like UGA in a middle-of-the pack conference??

Some of you guys that call yourself journalist are just ignored because two thirds of what you write is what you think happened and it kills you not to know more than anyone else. You always seem to do it in a negative way. Thats why when I do write a little something in here its just to let you know how dumb its is to read what you write. After lawyers which are the scum of the earth then come journalist. I only mean 98% of them both.

People that post on this blog need to rationalize a bit. Why in the he77 would we offer the DC position to David Pollack or Rodney Gardner? Neither have any experience as a DC and that would be a disaster. UGA needs a DC with a proven track record that can develop talent, can instill discipline, teach the fundamentals, and make in game adjustments. Dick Bumpus is the man for the job. Read his bio. We DO NOT need to promote a position coach. We did that with Wille and look where we ended up. Just my two cents.

Under Grown – Your right, the SEC is full of 7-5 teams this year playing in bowl games. But they are not as bad as the ACC. Remember, the two teams that played for the ACC championship could not beat a 7-5 SEC team. Unreal!!!

Doesn't anybody want to be Meyer's DC?

Doing a toast to the dog nation here at South Beach (literally) when one of my buddy’s said “Face it, other than georgia, most fans are pretty good people. We think that’s why you have twice as many rivals as any team in the NCAA (possible exception- Notre Dame). We think that’s why so many people enjoy seeing you get bitch slapped by Tech (45-42), Snubbed by Outback, sent to Shreveport (by OSU, LSU, TN, FL, KY), and trying to keep a straight face when every one knows you ain’t gonna get an established DC. Enjoy your day AH’s. This Teckster mad e3 A’s and B this semester is headed for the links (Doral). Dinner at Shula’s tonight and fishing the upper Keys again tomorrow. Life is good down here in these non SEC bowls.

Stick it up Your $1.4 million Shreveport vs. Our $14 million BCS Orange bowl, enjoy your 1 BCS bowl while you realize that you still got beat by UGA (as usual) and your ACC CG opponent was beaten by another SEC team. I don’t blame you for taking out a second mortgage to make the trip because you guys will probably be on the blue field again next year while UGA gets back where they belong….on top.

My guess; Tyrone Nix, Dick Bumpas or Kirby Smart. We will know by next week.

Shreveport vs. $14 million : I’ll be pulling for GT, even though I’m a dog fan. Life should be good in the non-SEC bowls. Remember the 38-3 whipping at the Chick-fil-a bowl last year? Hopefully, Tech will do better this time.

Flushed, you sound like a jealous loser because I’m sure you are. UGA doesn’t choose who we play in bowl games. We just win 80% of them no matter who we play. Let me guess. You’re another scorned techie that just can’t help but to show your respect for the mighty Bulldog Nation by rearing your ugly head here. WE LOVE IT! Keep it up nerds. You just keep on telling yourselves that you’re every bit as good as UGA and the ACC is just as good as the SEC and sing koombaya all the way up the screwed up BCS system’s ass.

Yeah … The Dawgs are going to pull a defensive coordinator DOWN a level from either of the two programs playing for all the marbles to do the same exact job at a mid level program .

Speaking of marbles … I think you dropped a couple ;-)
