Doesn’t anybody want to be Georgia’s defensive coordinator? (UPDATED)
Excuse Mark Richt if he's wondering what's going on.

At some point, Mark Richt will hire somebody as Georgia’s new defensive coordinator and he will assure the entire Bulldog Nation that he got the man he wanted all along, because that’s the way these things are done.
But it can’t be too comforting for Richt to know that all he really has accomplished so far is to get significant raises for coaches on other teams.
First, Virginia Tech’s Bud Foster turned down the job. As a reward, he was given an annuity worth up to $1 million. Now, it’s pretty apparent LSU’s John Chavis was offered the offered the job and turned it down because athletic director Joe Alleva said, “We did what we needed to do to keep him.”
That meant a significant raise: from $450,000 a year to a reported $600,000. And Chavis has been at LSU for only one season.
There is no telling where Richt turns now. Dallas Cowboys defensive line coach Todd Grantham, who coached under Foster at Virginia Tech, remains a possibility. But Grantham, who also coached for three years at Michigan State, has been in the NFL since 1999 and it’s not known if he would want to come back to college. His only tenure as a coordinator came with the Cleveland Browns (2005-07) and had mixed results.
Regardless, it’s never a good sign when a program is turned down multiple times by job candidates, and Richt doesn’t seem any closer to hiring a defensive coordinator today than he was when he fired Willie Martinez.
(UPDATE: I thought you folks would chuckle at this. LSU put out a press release on Chavis but never referred to Georgia, only an unspecified SEC school. So Vanderbilt offered him a job?)

BATON ROUGE – John Chavis, who was pursued by another school in the Southeastern Conference, will remain at LSU as the defensive coordinator, head coach Les Miles announced on Thursday.
“John has done a great job and he’s a key member of this staff,” Miles said. “John is a man of great character and a tremendous football coach. We’re glad he’s staying.”
In his first year with the Tigers, Chavis coached an LSU defense that rated No. 3 in the SEC and No. 12 in the nation in scoring at 16.0 points per game. The Tigers have allowed just six rushing touchdowns all season, the second-lowest total in college football this year.
“I’m staying at LSU and I’m excited about remaining here,” Chavis said. “LSU is a great place. This is an outstanding football program and I’m happy and honored to be a part of it.”
Chavis joined LSU last January after spending the 14 years as the defensive coordinator at Tennessee.
“We think John Chavis is one of the best defensive coordinators in the country,” LSU Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Joe Alleva said. “We felt like it’s important for the future of the program that we make this investment.”
Chavis will receive an increase in compensation, which will be announced at a future date.

As much as I hate the Gators if your a college football fan and not just an idiot..you have to admire what Tebow and the Gator seniors have done over the last 4 years my hat is off to them and I wish them well..as I do CUM I hope he is on the sidelines next year and we kick that Gator ass..but tonight he and the Gators made a statement…Bama may well be NC this year and I hope they are but this group of seniors are really special and I don’t mean that as a short bus special….God’s speed young men…

I would think with your inteligence and the job that you have reporting for AJC that you would put two and two together . . .do you honestly think that ANY COACH, even your beloved Coach Paul Johnson would name a replacement coach (for any position) until after the Bowl Games? How stupid are you really? And by the way, I think that there are a good number of coaches that would love to coach at a school like UGA. Do you not? Or can you get your head out of Coach Paul Johnson’s bottom long enough to consider that? And by the way, did you ever coach high school, college, pee wee, etc.? I think not. I do not think that you have ever written a positive story about GA. That said, keep thinking that Tech and Paul Johnson is your savior. I can’t believe that you would make such a big deal about UGA or Mark Richt not already have named a D Coordinator. What would you have done. You would have already taken care of this? You wouldn’t have waited until after the bowl season . . . thinking that the replacemtn surely would be coming from someone playing in one of the bowls? Surely, you are not that stupid. I really don’t think we ever got turned down by Chavis, Koenning(spelling? but it doesn’t matter anyways), or Bud Foster. I really believe that all three of them (and we’ll find more who do it later) will rumor themselves to be approached for the job in order to secure for themselves a raise. It’s not that they’re saying no to UGA, CMR never approached them. They’re just trying to make more money. It’s a business you know. In Chavis’ case, 150,000 raise. Anyone who wouldn’t do that for belated Christmas present to themselves is dishonest in their own right. The bowl game to me showed that CMR has an outstanding understanding of all sides of the game of football. It showed me that he knows how to coach a team, and reinstilled confidence in me that he really does know what he’s doing. As much as it pains me to say it, I trust him and I’m resolved to wait for our good news either early this week or late next.

ATLANTA, GA: SEC officials have just confirmed that they will remname the conference beginning with the 2010 season to Season Ending Chokers in reaction to the 0-2 record in bowl games with the ACC and the loss of LSU to Penn State, bringing the league’s New Year’s Eve-Day tally to 0-3.
When asked to comment, Conference Commissioner, Michael L. Slive said, “This is a sad day for the SEC…er, the Season Ending Chokers, but we need to face the facts…our conference is simply not as dominant as out chest-pounding fans think. To be embarassed in front of the whole country and other conferences by the ACC teams and on New Years Day is truly a new low for us CHOKERS!”
And indeed most would agree, New Years Day of 2010 was quite a low for the Season Ending Chokers…more choking to follow.
