Excuse Mark Richt if he's wondering what's going on.
(UPDATE BELOW)
At some point, Mark Richt will hire somebody as Georgia’s new defensive coordinator and he will assure the entire Bulldog Nation that he got the man he wanted all along, because that’s the way these things are done.
But it can’t be too comforting for Richt to know that all he really has accomplished so far is to get significant raises for coaches on other teams.
First, Virginia Tech’s Bud Foster turned down the job. As a reward, he was given an annuity worth up to $1 million. Now, it’s pretty apparent LSU’s John Chavis was offered the offered the job and turned it down because athletic director Joe Alleva said, “We did what we needed to do to keep him.”
That meant a significant raise: from $450,000 a year to a reported $600,000. And Chavis has been at LSU for only one season.
There is no telling where Richt turns now. Dallas Cowboys defensive line coach Todd Grantham, who coached under Foster at Virginia Tech, remains a possibility. But Grantham, who also coached for three years at Michigan State, has been in the NFL since 1999 and it’s not known if he would want to come back to college. His only tenure as a coordinator came with the Cleveland Browns (2005-07) and had mixed results.
Regardless, it’s never a good sign when a program is turned down multiple times by job candidates, and Richt doesn’t seem any closer to hiring a defensive coordinator today than he was when he fired Willie Martinez.
(UPDATE: I thought you folks would chuckle at this. LSU put out a press release on Chavis but never referred to Georgia, only an unspecified SEC school. So Vanderbilt offered him a job?)
LSU SPORTS INFORMATION
For Immediate Release December 31, 2009CHAVIS TO REMAIN AT LSU
BATON ROUGE – John Chavis, who was pursued by another school in the Southeastern Conference, will remain at LSU as the defensive coordinator, head coach Les Miles announced on Thursday.
“John has done a great job and he’s a key member of this staff,” Miles said. “John is a man of great character and a tremendous football coach. We’re glad he’s staying.”
In his first year with the Tigers, Chavis coached an LSU defense that rated No. 3 in the SEC and No. 12 in the nation in scoring at 16.0 points per game. The Tigers have allowed just six rushing touchdowns all season, the second-lowest total in college football this year.
“I’m staying at LSU and I’m excited about remaining here,” Chavis said. “LSU is a great place. This is an outstanding football program and I’m happy and honored to be a part of it.”
Chavis joined LSU last January after spending the 14 years as the defensive coordinator at Tennessee.
“We think John Chavis is one of the best defensive coordinators in the country,” LSU Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Joe Alleva said. “We felt like it’s important for the future of the program that we make this investment.”
Chavis will receive an increase in compensation, which will be announced at a future date.

everyone’s saying this and that when no one knows a damn thing…everyone keep speculating and I’ll just sit back and wait to see who it winds up being. i work as a recruiter and i know that harkly ever is an offer handed out unless there is a very good chance the candidate with accept. Coach Richt is a first class person and a top tier coach. He’s not running around handing out offers like candy i can tell you that much! all you haters can spread all the spin you want but in the ind of the day…..it really doesn’t matter! people hate us cuz they ain’t us! 2010’s going to be the year of the Dawg baby! Tim DeRuyter from Air Force is the man – does alot with a little. The Service Academies can’t get the “heavies” because of size/weight requirements, but DeRuyter has a dominant defense at Air Force regardless. I think he would be great. Runs a 3-4 though, but so does Todd Grantham.

I am a UGA fan and I would love for the UGA athletic department to think out of the box a little. Apparently the search has remained relatively local for the defensive coordinator position. This guy at Oregon State should get a look from Coach Richt. Mark Banker is his name I believe. With less talent, he has consistently helped Oregon State field a competitive defense. He also seems to be very cutting-edge on his philosophy. In other words, he doesn’t coach scared and his players seem to play agressively. I wish Coach Richt could read this article. I read that he is a Massachusetts native, but has coached his entire career on the West Coast. The head coach at OSU is Riley who stated that the strength of Coach Banker is his innovation and the discipline of lanes his players are taught to have. This seems to be the precise problem with UGA at times. The Dawgs are not disciplined and held accountable for their responsibilities. I have alot of faith in Coach Richt, and he’ll get the right guy, but sometimes the high-profile guy isn’t the answer.

Tim DeRuyter. Below is his record this year.
His team gave up 20 or under 10 times and 20 or over 3 times. Turnover ratios was plus 21, and they were in the top 20 in every D category. He coached with unbelievable restrictions which he would not have at UGA or any major school. Google him and find out who, where, what, etc.

Quit getting raises for these SEC DC’s with current jobs. Offer Kirby and if he don’t bit, Dick Bumpas or Sylvester Croom. Bumpas knows he can’t get the recognition at TCU that he will here. Sylvester Croom is a great southern gentleman who knows defense and any kid would play hard for. Plus tje parents would love him.

Mark Richt is not a liar, he is a realist. If Gray was good enough, he woulda started this season. Sides , I don’t remember Richt promising anynody a job who did’nt earn it. He has to put what’s best for the team first. I saw Arron Murray at the G Day game. Gray cannot touch Murray’s talent. You are a misguided fool. The smartest man on earth told me that it is smarter to be thought a fool , than to open your mouth and prove everyone right.
