Chavis-to-Georgia rumors still alive — and why not Garner? (UPDATE II)

Rodney Garner has been getting raises. But he never has been given a shot at the defensive coordinator's job. (Brant Sanderlin/bsanderlin@AJC.com)

(UPDATED BELOW WITH CHAVIS COMMENT)

(SECOND UPDATE WITH RICHT SAYING GARNER IS NOT A CANDIDATE)

When I posted a blog Tuesday morning about LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis telling one of his players that he was not interested in the Georgia job, contrary to rumors, the last thing I expected was that it would unravel into some inane and profane race debate. After becoming aware of it last night from a reader (while I was covering the Hawks’ dreadful performance), I had to close commenting and eventually deleted about 60 comments.

It’s with that, and some trepidation, that I inform you of one thing and ask another this morning:

♦ Chris Low, the respected SEC football writer at ESPN.com, posted a blog this morning with the headline, “Chavis on Richt’s radar at Georgia.”

♦ If Bulldogs coach Mark Richt doesn’t get the coordinator he wants to replace Willie Martinez, would it be so awful if he promoted Rodney Garner?

First on the Chavis thing. I wouldn’t have brought it up a second day in a row if somebody like Low didn’t report it. (Notice I wrote Low, not ESPN in general). An excerpt from the blog:

In talking to several people close to the situation, Richt has serious interest in Chavis and is prepared to throw some serious money at the veteran defensive coordinator, who headed up Tennessee’s defense for 14 seasons prior to joining Les Miles’ staff at LSU for this past season.

Chavis makes a lot of sense. He’s a proven commodity and knows the SEC well. The Tigers were 12th nationally this season in scoring defense, allowing 16 points per game. They gave up just 18 touchdowns in 12 games. Only five teams nationally yielded fewer touchdowns this season.

Low also pointed out this interesting stat:

Since his promotion to defensive coordinator at Tennessee in 1995, he’s 7-3 against the Bulldogs in Sanford Stadium. That includes LSU’s 20-13 win over Georgia this season.

If Richt has some super secret candidate on his radar that nobody has mentioned, he deserves kudos for being so stealth. There has been nothing to indicate that, however. Chavis obviously would be a strong hire. But the likelihood of him leaving LSU after only one season  — when he stayed at his previous school for 20 — would be surprising. If nothing else, Chavis — like so many others — might just get a raise out of this.

Now, about Garner. He is not a coordinator. But the case can be made he is the second most important football coach at Georgia after Richt. Why? Because he’s the recruiting coordinator. He keeps getting raises because other schools keep coming after him because he keeps landing all of those 37-star recruits we obsess about.

After Martinez’s firing, there were a flurry of unsubstantiated rumors, mostly on Twitter, that Garner resigned after learning he was not a serious candidate for the defensive coordinator’s position. Garner shot down those rumors, obviously. He stayed for the Independence Bowl game and, with the aid of only two grad assistants, he directed a strong defensive performance in Georgia’s win over Texas A&M.

The fact Garner has never been the defensive coordinator — or presumably has received a strong offer to call plays for another school — has led to this perception that he is not worthy of that position. If that’s true, here’s my question: Why not? Doesn’t he deserve the chance? It’s a topic that I don’t know has been given the attention it deserves.

(UPDATE: Chavis says nothing to quell speculation)

Our Tim Tucker has blogged about Chavis’s non-denial/denial at a Capital One Bowl press conference when asked about the Georgia job. You can click the link above, but here’s an excerpt:

Asked at a Capital One Bowl news conference in Orlando about his possible interest in the Georgia defensive coordinator job, Chavis said:   “Well, we’re excited about what we’re doing at LSU, and my focus has been on LSU and will continue to be on  LSU. We have an opportunity to win 10 ballgames, and certainly that is what we want to do. We’ve got an opportunity to be the third team in the SEC to win 100 ballgames in a decade, and certainly that is what we want to do.

“So that is where our focus is going to be.  I’ll talk as long as you want to about LSU and about our players. I’ll be happy to do that.”

In other words:  no comment about the Georgia job.

Didn’t exactly put that rumor to rest, did he?

(SECOND UPDATE)

Richt told Tucker this morning that Garner is not a candidate for the coaching job. That confirms what most of us thought — that if he was going to get the job, it would’ve happened by now. Richt also said the job search could take longer than expected.

Richt sidestepped a question on Chavis. An excerpt:

Richt would not comment today on his interest in LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis or any other candidates. But he did say that Rodney Garner, the only holdover on Georgia’s defensive staff, is not under consideration for the DC job.

“No, Rodney is not a candidate for the job. He knows that,” Richt said. “We’re just still in the search.”

As for all the rumors swirling throughout Bulldog Nation about the search, Richt said: “I’m not taking any pleasure at all in what people might be going through out there. All I can say is . . . when I do have that decision made and it’s ready for public consumption, I’ll let everybody know. My goal is to get the right man for the job.”

Asked specifically about Chavis, Richt said: “I’m not going to make any comment on these things until we’ve got our man.”

I am sure Coach Richt is seriously considering Coach Garner. Garner has been a very loyal, classy and effective coach for Georgia. If anything effected his defensive line it was the ridiculous and passive defensive schemes carried out by Martinez.

However, Richt may be gun shy because he promoted Willie Martinez to defensive coordinator and Willie failed miserably. Therefore, I feel strongly that Coach Richt will go with a well established defensive coordinator whatever the financial cost. UGA has the money to pay.

How about letting me fill one of those vacant coaching positions?

The first thing I would do is tie a rope around Russ, the temporary Mascot’s testes and drag him down the street behind my scooter then I would lock him in the broom closet.

My second order of business would be to drive over to the flats and punch Paul Johnson in the mouth.

I agree for the most part, his coaching style was alot like WM defense too though and not against an SEC team. This is what i fear WM imprint on Garner. We need an outside source with a much more aggresive defense with more blitz packages this hire will help Garner in the long run. This will give Garner the resume he needs for the next hire at that position with no questions asked. CMR just does’nt want a repeat of WM defense like i said it will help him in the future

Rodney Garner’s position as Recruiting Coordinator is at least equal to either defensive coordinator or offensive coordinator. Coach Garner is and has been the highest paid assistant on Richt’s staff and he has earned every bit of it. If Coach Garner wants to be considered for the job I am sure Coach Richt will give him major consideration. Coach Garner has been an excellent coach on our staff and has earned great respect. I am very proud to have him on our staff at UGA. He is a great recruiting coordinator and is absolutely invaluable in that position. If Richt chooses Garner I will support him in that decision.

How about on the offensive side of the ball, we hire Mike Leach as the new offensive coordinator. He runs the spread offense, he was the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma for 5 years under Bob Stoops, he has produced very good qb’s in his time at Texas Tech. We can reassign Mike Bobo to QB coach.

How about that?

This is just a guess, but isn’t the assistant head coach title above a DC? And if Garner wanted to be a DC couldn’t he already have been one somewhere else? I’m thinking maybe he likes what he is doing.

For starters the defensive line play at Georgia has mediocre at best in recent years. That’s the where the defensive problems start at UGA, and last I checked the line was Garner’s department. Many fans were surprised to see Garner’s head not included on the chopping block along with the other defensive coaches. Most knowledgeable dog fans, rightfully so, generally assume we kept Garner largely because of his recruiting prowess.
Let’s face it, whoever gets hired as the Defensive Coordinator will probably want to bring in his own guys to coach the line, LB’s, secondary. Where will Garner fit in? A) Assistant Head Coach in charge of recruiting; if it stays at all.

I was at UGA when Erk was DC. He had some “stars”, but mostly over acheivers, who flew to the ball. Whoever is selected as DC must be someone who can “sell” himself to the kids and to get them to believe in the system. The numbers have trended upwards in yards given up because the kids today have received much better coaching and physical development in high school than 43 years ago when I started college. A kid comes out of high school (for the most part) having played four years on one side of the ball ( I know some kids go both ways) but not like it used to be. These kids today are specialists by the time they hit the college level. A DC is needed that can refine those skills and “coach them up”. That is where the good coaches seperate themselves from the others, and UGA better be ready with the checkbook if they want a top-notch DC.

PHIL

December 30th, 2009

WHY, WHY would you even speak to ANY adult who has punished ANY kid for ANY reason by putting him in a closet????? If you knew your neighbor did that to his kids you’d be calling DFCS. So what kind of moron suggests Leach as a coach for ANYTHING? An adult who punishes a kid by putting him in a closet needs to be in jail, not coaching. The fact that 20 people may have been stationed outside that closet has zero relevance. It’s unacceptable for any reason and he needs to be tarred and feathered.

UGA Grad, yeah I was there, too. What I remember is being beaten 45-0 by UVA at homecoming. What I remember is one good year that didn’t result in 3-4 defeats a year. If Erk were the DC now he’d be talked about much worse than Martinez. He certainly had no better results just because he head butted players with helmets on. I have NEVER understood the hype.

Good article by Doug Roberson
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Paul Johnson’s will to win is so strong, his wife jokes that he wouldn’t even let his daughter win at Candy Land when she was a little girl.
When his wife would ask why, the coach gave the only answer he knew.
“Hey, she’s got to learn to win on her own,” Johnson said, retelling the story he says his wife still often jokes about.
Johnson’s will — no, his need — to win, whether it’s playing golf, football or even board games against little kids, is unlike anything his players or assistants say they’ve ever experienced.
Born and fueled in the Appalachian mountains of western North Carolina and then honed at coaching stops all over the country, that desire to be the best has helped Johnson propel the No. 9 Yellow Jackets to the Orange Bowl for the first time since 1967, the honor for winning their first outright ACC title since 1990.
“He’s been nothing but a winner his whole life and he wants to remain that way,” defensive coordinator Dave Wommack said. “If you’re going to beat him in something, you better have your A-game.”
Some of it comes from people telling him what he can’t do. Take the people who said — some continue to say — that his spread-option offense wouldn’t work in the ACC. Some 10,500 yards and 20 wins later, he’s proving them wrong.
Some of it comes from just doing his job. As co-offensive line coach Mike Sewak says, you get only one chance every week to prove that you know what you are doing. He says Johnson always runs practices at full-speed, all the time. Sewak said he can’t remember the last time a Johnson-coached team did a walk-through that was, in fact, a walk-through and not a full-speed exercise.
There’s no wasted energy and no wasted time. The focus is on winning. It’s why Johnson scoffs when asked why skill players rarely wear no-contact jerseys. He points out that the team they’ll be facing on Saturday won’t be playing two-hand touch.
And some of it comes from growing up as one of the youngest kids on his block in Newland, N.C. Johnson says you got competitive or you got whipped. Baseball, basketball or football. It didn’t matter. No quarter was given.
“There’s a fear of failure,” Johnson said. “It’s who I am.”
Roddy Jones, a sophomore A-back, said that drive was evident in the first team meeting Johnson held after he was hired by athletics director Dan Radakovich in December 2007.
Some of the rules he put in place were simple: mandatory team breakfasts and mandatory class attendance. The last, however, showed his new team just how serious he was about one day leading his team to a national championship: 5:30 a.m. runs every morning before spring ball.
“We knew this was serious. We are going to work,” Jones said.
It wasn’t as if Chan Gailey, whom Johnson succeeded, wasn’t competitive. Jones and others who work with the coach said the difference is Johnson wears his emotions on his sleeve. Despite the “I-don’t-care-what-you-think” stance he often takes with the media or fans on his radio show, he takes slights personally. Couple that with his appetite for seemingly reading everything that’s written about him or his team as he searches for motivation and it can make for interesting exchanges.
There was a moment earlier this season after Tech defeated Virginia, when Johnson good-naturedly called out a national blogger who had picked his Yellow Jackets to lose to the Cavs.
Then there was the “McDonald’s” moment, while Johnson was coaching at Navy. Asked why the coaches seemed to get all the credit for the wins and the players the blame for the losses, Johnson cut loose but this excerpt made many chuckle:
“I don’t go down to McDonald’s and start second-guessing his job, so he ought to leave me alone,” Johnson retorted.
Johnson can be just as caustic with his players. Former Middie quarterback Chris McCoy, the same player who torched Tech for five touchdowns in 1996, tells a story of how Johnson once thought he caught him smiling a couple of days after a loss. McCoy said Johnson grabbed him by the back of the shirt and yanked him out of the huddle faster than you can say “spread-based option offense.” And that was during practice.
“I was just admiring his wonderful coaching ability, and he took it the wrong way, I believe,” McCoy now jokes. “You love to play for him. He’s going to give you his all. You see that in every play he calls, every minute with him. He expects the same thing … even when you are admiring his ability.”
Those who play for or coach with him now tell similar stories. Tech center Sean Bedford said he wouldn’t play Johnson in anything because he’s afraid what his coach might do to win. Wommack said even if he has beaten Johnson in something, he wouldn’t say. Sewak, who has worked with Johnson off and on since 1985, said he has beaten him in golf a few times, but jokes that Johnson wouldn’t admit it.
“He’s like me and like anybody else: let’s run it again,” Sewak said. “Best two out of three. It may end up best 1,300 out of 1,500.”
Most important, beyond all the bluster, Bedford and quarterbacks coach Brian Bohannon said the team has taken on their coach’s personality.
Take the overtime period of the Nov. 7 Wake Forest game, when Johnson, trailing by three points, risked his team’s chances of the ACC title by going for it on fourth-and-inches from inside the 5-yard line. He later explained his decision by saying he can’t ask his players to play to win if he’s not willing to coach that way.
“He coaches the way he speaks,” said Wes Durham, the radio voice of the Yellow Jackets. “He coaches the truth. He plays to win.”
One can’t talk about Johnson’s competitiveness without mentioning the other big fourth-down decision. Trailing Clemson by a point in the ACC title game and facing fourth down on their last drive on their own 23-yard line with less than five minutes to play, the Jackets had to go for it if they had any hope of winning the game.
Johnson said there wasn’t anyone on the field who doubted that not only were they going to get the first down, but that they were also going to score a touchdown and win the game.
“He’s built the toughness and character of this team,” Bedford said. “We have to go for 60 minutes. We’re not going to stop until the final whistle.”

Everyone is so obsessed by the fact that Georgia gave up almost 500 yards to A & M but seems to be missing the fact that, because of UGA’s special teams success, A & M ran 92 plays to Georgia’s 68. Giving up only 14 real points while being on the field for most of the game against such a high-powered offense does represent very good defense. Some of you UGA fans would only be satisfied by a shutout every week!

i think garner could do at least as good as willie. and with two excellent position coaches probably far better. as far as the a&m game it was a vanilla scheme. but the d line, garners boys and up until now he only had dt’s played their butts off for the most part, and the ga’s coached the lb’s and d backs where most of our problems have been and were still for this game. hard to unlearn all the problems in 2 or 3 weeks. also, the basic question is if, IF, garner wanted the job cmr takes a small gamble b/c he is unproven, but we still have him around recruiting. on the other hand, he risks losing the recruting ability if garner feels slighted and wants to move on. also, what if new DC doesnt mesh w/ garner he may go anyway. cmr has wieghed the pros and cons im sure very dliberately since he decided to fire willie and the gang. hes very deliberate and loyal, if hes not offering to garner theres very good reasons. hopefully, it works for us in the end. we must trust him. but, on thatu note what does sanders or

Garner might be a great coordinator, he’s just an unknown quantity when it comes to coordinating. At least from the fan’s perspective. Biggest problem with hiring Garner, really, is the circumstances. It would be a tough sell politically to hire from within when Dawg Nation wants a defensive makeover.

When Martinez replaced BVG, fans wanted continuity. But not this time.

Now that Mike Leach is available, I think UGA should bring him on. That way UGA could pass for all scores and totally abandon the running game. Since the SEC runs the NCAA they could institute a rule change to allow 12 points for passing TDs and leave rushing TDs at 6.
