Georgia update: If Chavis was on the board, take him off

John Chavis felt the need to squash a rumor that he was coming to Athens.

LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis apparently heard rumors that he was a candidate at Georgia, so he stopped them.

I’m not sure if this qualifies as news, since LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis never really has been cast as a realistic candidate for the Georgia defensive coordinator’s opening. But for the record, he apparently is telling LSU players he is not interested.

Tigers linebacker Kelvin Sheppard told a Baton Rouge television station that Chavis pulled him to the side during practice and told him: “You knew if I was going anywhere, you’d [Sheppard] be the first person I’d tell.  I’m here with you all, I love it here, I’m not going anywhere.”

LSU is preparing for the Capital One Bowl against Penn State Friday. WBRZ in Baton Rouge reported that neither Chavis nor Les Miles were available for comment. Chavis in his first season at LSU after 20 years at Tennessee. He makes about $450,000 as LSU’s defensive coordinator.

There’s been no shortage of names that have floated around, including Bud Foster (who got a raise to stay at Virginia Tech) and Kirby Smart (who is expected to receive a significant raise to stay at Alabama). The Dogs also contacted Kansas State’s Vic Koenning before he left for Illinois, but it’s not believed they ever offered him the job.

If Georgia coach Mark Richt is getting closer to hiring a candidate, it’s only because he has been saying the process should be wrapped up by next week. That’s after the bowl games and the NFL regular season. I mention the NFL regular season because Buffalo defensive line coach Bob Sanders and Dallas defensive line coach Todd Grantham also have been mentioned as candidates.

I think what people around here like about Muschamp is his intensity. I am not sold on him! I say bring in a guy from the NFL who is hungry to one day lead a program as a head coach. Make him Associate Head Coach and assign him to all the major recruits on defense. He can tell those guys, I have coached in the NFL and I know what it takes to get to the league.

Saban will leave Alabama soon! Go to S. Carolina and seal his name in SEC History as the only coach that can turn three teams in the SEC into winners. Spurrier, Meyer, Miles, and Richt will be after thoughts soon!

Kirby Smart would be like hiring Steve Spurrier’s offensive coordinator. That is Nick Saban’s defense don’t kid yourself into Smart. He would be a bad hire. I liked a lot of what I saw but bottom line is we just out athleted them. It really kinda tells you how why the coaches got fired in the first place. We are as athletic as Ala and Fla just somewhere in the last 5 years we just try to knock people down and don’t lock up and tackle people. Thats coaching.

“There is a huge gap between how Mutt fans perceive their own program and how its [perceived] elsewhere.” (I corrected your spelling errors, Mr. “[Intelligentsia]“)

Oh really Mr. Johnson? UGA may not have won any recent National Championships, but they’ve done very well. UGA is making its 13th straight bowl appearance, 4th behind Florida State (28), Florida (19) and Virginia Tech (17). In those games, UGA is 25-16-3 all-time, again 4th behind USC, Bama, and Penn St. UGA has 13 straight seasons of 8 or more wins, tops in the country (as reported by this paper). Forbes just put UGA #9 on it’s list of top 20 most valuable college football programs (along with 7 other SEC schools, which basically means we Southerners are just plain football crazy). Along with Coach Richt’s record, I’d say UGA is most assuredly an elite program, especially when compared to the North Avenue Trade School.

Oh, and by the way, that’s COACH Suntan to you, d*ckweed.

John your right about ideaology, but is mine based off facts? Every sports question I’ve asked about the History of the SEC not hiring Blacks in Key positions hasn’t been able to be answered. See it’s the shortcomings of The “true” racist on here that make it easy to keep this going. When you look at History(that’s what tells us our past)it’s obvious AAmen have never been given a fair shake in the SEC.can any one disput the facts!

I will admitt that Muschamp, like Saban is intense. Saban is more of a controled intensity, Muschamp needs to tamper his enthusiasm a bit. Both has that “fire” that is desparately needed to rival CMR cool demeanor. I’m afraid CMR is looking for the person that “best fits him” (cool & calm)…which is why Georgia sometimes play down to the level of their competiton, and then come out flat in big games.

Cheese, just keep working hard, and ones talents will be recogonized. The fact is, blacks were left behind, when you have a race of poeple who, only 200 years ago, they came from a place that did not have written language, medicine, institutions of higher learning, or any basic infrasturcture of civilized society, to magically get caught up and 100% integrated into a modern society is unrealistic. Again the “true racism” exists in both races.

I’m not trying to bring the discussion back to football or anything, but I did notice some people bringing up some numbers earlier. UGA can afford to pay whatever they want… literally. For years UGA was the gold standard in Economics textbooks, as it had the only athletics program in the SEC and most of the country that operated in the black. Today is no different. If you go and look at the numbers UGA brings in more money than any other school in the SEC (yes, that includes your school too UF fan). So, money should not be an issue. The right man for the job needs to be the issue.

Mr Charlie, I agree to disagree, History will tell you that Africa, and Africans was the most modernized country in the world at that time, but when you are robbed of your language, robbed from your country and loose your culture, your religion and your God, you have to adapt to another way of living. Also let’s stop with the 200 years thing. It is the biggest lie in American History. Martin L King wasn’t killed 200 years ago, he was killed 41 years ago fighting for racial justice.

Rodney King asked that same question 15 plus years ago and the answer seems to be no. There will always be people like Rev. Wright and Cheeseburger & Fries, just like there will be white neo-nazi’s. Garner will leave UGA someday… but only for a quality HEAD COACHING job, which he richly deserves by the way, and we will miss him…end of story. He has had plenty of chances to leave and go other places…even for more money…and he hasn’t.
Know why? Because he loves Athens, the University of Georgia and Mark Richt, that’s why.

If he wanted to leave, he would have left as soon as he knew he wasn’t a candidate for the DC. He didn’t!
You think he was saying “I’ll bet Mark didn’t promote me to DC because I’m black” ?…Please! RACE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!

Cheeseburger-Head needs to get a life and stick his race issues where the sun don’t shine.
This blog is not the place for crap like that.

On your point, it will change. Maybe not as fast as you like, but it will happen. If SEC schools continue to ignore the best coaching talent, they will be overtaken by other conferences. “Chavis!? The same one that 3rd and Chavis is named for. Many LSU fans and Sports Writers claim that the LSU defense does not have intensity.

Chavis would not be a step up from Garner and 2 Grad. Assistants.”

I’m a LSU season ticket holder and I went to every game but 2 road games and I only heard one fan all season say anything negative about Chavis.

In 2008 the Tigers were 56th in points allowed nationally. In 2009 they are 12th at 16.0 a game and just .8 behind Texas who is 8th at 15.2.

The facts show in the most important defensive statistic that LSU’s defense improved significantly this year.

What could happen according to sources

December 29th, 2009
7:05 pm

A inside source at UGA has stated Mr. Smart will leave Alabama only if he is promised the keys to Athens. He know CMR does not want to coach forever (he want’s to be a motivational speaker). Smart wants to be promised the head coaching position in order for him to defect.

I personally would not agree to this. Is the D at Alabama because of Smart or Sabin. Sabin is a D god and also a micro manger. What if Smart comes to UGA we promise the throne to him and he was nothing but Sabin’s puppet. The contract must state the throne will be passed if he reaches certain goals over the next few year. Say 3 years in the top 20 in D.

You’re right. This doesn’t qualify as news. There must be incredible pressure to come up with something to say in a blog every few days. The attention-seeking headline implies that UGA is pursuing Chavis or that many UGA supporters want to see him hired and should be deeply disappointed that he’s not interested. Yet the content of this “story” is that Chavis has never been rumored to be a candidate, hasn’t to anyone’s knowledge been contacted about the job, and Chavis himself has been (allegedly) saying that he’s planning to stay at LSU for now.

Maybe if you cull the internet for news items on college coaches telling their players that they’ll be returning to their respective program, you can turn each one into a “story” about how that particular coach should be taken off of UGA’s wish list. That should provide you with at least another dozen “stories” before Georgia makes their hire (heavy sarcasm and an eye roll).

Pollack does not want to be a coach. He has stated that multiple times in the last few days.

Smart isn’t going to be going to UGA. But if you’re banking it on that generic remark he made at that function then you’re dumber than RambleOn. Saban said he wasn’t going to Bama either (duh).

Ray Goof was a great recruiter too. Look how that turned out. Just because somebody is good at one thing doesn’t mean he’ll be a genius in another (duh)

Are you telling me that because rodney garner is a good recruiter that he should have his name thrown in for the DC job? I want a DC that can coach, not one that is a good salesman. Garner has been the interior Dline coach, to me that just doesn’t show that richt has alot of faith in him as a coach that he wasn’t even given the responsibility of the entire Dline. I still stand by my opinion that UGA needs fresh blood in the defensive coaching positions to give the defense a spark.
