Georgia update: If Chavis was on the board, take him off
LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis apparently heard rumors that he was a candidate at Georgia, so he stopped them.
I’m not sure if this qualifies as news, since LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis never really has been cast as a realistic candidate for the Georgia defensive coordinator’s opening. But for the record, he apparently is telling LSU players he is not interested.
Tigers linebacker Kelvin Sheppard told a Baton Rouge television station that Chavis pulled him to the side during practice and told him: “You knew if I was going anywhere, you’d [Sheppard] be the first person I’d tell. I’m here with you all, I love it here, I’m not going anywhere.”
LSU is preparing for the Capital One Bowl against Penn State Friday. WBRZ in Baton Rouge reported that neither Chavis nor Les Miles were available for comment. Chavis in his first season at LSU after 20 years at Tennessee. He makes about $450,000 as LSU’s defensive coordinator.
There’s been no shortage of names that have floated around, including Bud Foster (who got a raise to stay at Virginia Tech) and Kirby Smart (who is expected to receive a significant raise to stay at Alabama). The Dogs also contacted Kansas State’s Vic Koenning before he left for Illinois, but it’s not believed they ever offered him the job.
If Georgia coach Mark Richt is getting closer to hiring a candidate, it’s only because he has been saying the process should be wrapped up by next week. That’s after the bowl games and the NFL regular season. I mention the NFL regular season because Buffalo defensive line coach Bob Sanders and Dallas defensive line coach Todd Grantham also have been mentioned as candidates.

Just think, yesterday at this time you were getting ready for kickoff and I was getting my a$$ painted. The game turned out fine, though. My record as mascot speaks for itself.
Next season, there will be a new mascot in place and you won’t have Russ to kick around any more.

Let me provide some wisdom lacking to the Georgia “intelligensia”. Proven–and available big defensive names aren’t easy to come by. Most of ‘em are gainfully employed and aspire to bigger things than a lateral move to another school. So far Coach Suntan has whiffed twice and all he has to show for it is helping Bud Foster cop a hefty raise. Since the count is 0-2, my guess is that he brings in a pro retread with college experience, or he brings somebody up from a smaller school. There is a huge gap between how Mutt fans percieve their own program and how its perceived elsewhere. Its just not that prestigious of a position. Plus Suntan showed that he’s responsive to outside pressure when the chips are down, which has to weigh in the mind of anybody looking to pull up stakes from an established position. If he’s smart he’ll bring in a young, hungry go-getter type, instead of the grizzled old warhorse. For some reason, I think he’ll pick the old warhorse.

Georgia playing Bama would be a better game than they are going to get from longhorns. UGA loses it best linebacker and most of defense line. The dawgs have problems on the offense line and at QB. You lose 10 starters how are the dawgs going to be better next year?

Cheeseburger &Fries…you have a point. Tyrone Nix & Charlie Strong has been the best defensive coordinators in the SEC for a long time. Both has constantly put a whipping on Georgia’s tail, but neither (until Charlie Strong hiring in Louisville) has been given the opportunity for better positions.

As a true dawgfan even i have to admit that we will be hard pressed to get someone to leave the caliber of programs such as Texas and Alabama to come to Georgia to be a defensive Coordinator. Kirby Smart will only come to UGA to be a head coach and so will Muschamp! Their jobs at their respective schools are bettter than the Georgia job,,, sorry guys but its factual and it dosdent make sense to leave those schools to come here. I think it’s a pro guy. It will be just like when Miami hired Mark Whipple last year as their offensive coordinator, no one really knew who he was! I have to admit, its been a big secret but who knows. As far as the commits, they will hang around Bj Butler, let him go if he wants no big deal. No player is bigger than the school unless you are Tim Tebow.

The problem with getting a pro coach is that they always want to return to pro. They will pad their resume for a few years and return when/if they get a better offer in the NFL. I’m not 100% sure if Nick Saban is completely done with the NFL, he’s very finicky, once he has his national title in Alabama he will get his usual 3 year itch.

I agree the coveralls are enticing, but I just think the entire perchant to commit a crime fits in with Techs MO. You could dress him in a white T, and put his pants around his knees, but in the end, I am afraid to admit you might have won this argument….Too bad it happed before he robbed the store, because we could have figured out exactly where he belonged by the merchandise he would have stolen.
