Georgia update: If Chavis was on the board, take him off

John Chavis felt the need to squash a rumor that he was coming to Athens.

LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis apparently heard rumors that he was a candidate at Georgia, so he stopped them.

I’m not sure if this qualifies as news, since LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis never really has been cast as a realistic candidate for the Georgia defensive coordinator’s opening. But for the record, he apparently is telling LSU players he is not interested.

Tigers linebacker Kelvin Sheppard told a Baton Rouge television station that Chavis pulled him to the side during practice and told him: “You knew if I was going anywhere, you’d [Sheppard] be the first person I’d tell.  I’m here with you all, I love it here, I’m not going anywhere.”

LSU is preparing for the Capital One Bowl against Penn State Friday. WBRZ in Baton Rouge reported that neither Chavis nor Les Miles were available for comment. Chavis in his first season at LSU after 20 years at Tennessee. He makes about $450,000 as LSU’s defensive coordinator.

There’s been no shortage of names that have floated around, including Bud Foster (who got a raise to stay at Virginia Tech) and Kirby Smart (who is expected to receive a significant raise to stay at Alabama). The Dogs also contacted Kansas State’s Vic Koenning before he left for Illinois, but it’s not believed they ever offered him the job.

If Georgia coach Mark Richt is getting closer to hiring a candidate, it’s only because he has been saying the process should be wrapped up by next week. That’s after the bowl games and the NFL regular season. I mention the NFL regular season because Buffalo defensive line coach Bob Sanders and Dallas defensive line coach Todd Grantham also have been mentioned as candidates.

Can we change our pick yet? Surely we can have Clemson play in our bowl. At least they won’t jump up and down thinking they are at a basketball game. Plus their program is good enough that they have a real foottball stadium and make money in football. Plus, they have fans as good as any SEC school. I don’t guess we can invite an SEC team that already beat our ACC champion. One that already won their bowl game. Darn it, I wish we were not tied to this stupid ACC champion thing, they don’t play football anymore in the ACC since Miami and FSU quit being serious.

Norm Chow, really? He is the OC at UCLA! WOW!

The Houston Texans DC? Really? I love UGA, no NFL DC is coming to the college game, unless it for his son, alah Kiffin.

At this point Garner may have earned his shot last night. The defense finally showed that they could get up the field and pressure someone. I would not be opposed to the hire.

Wonderdawg – i have been thinking the same thing. To listen to all the nerds boldly proclaim that they are going to score with chicks in Miami is beyond hilarious. In reality, they’ll piss their pants if a goodlooking female even glances at them, which won’t happen. I’m laughing so hard at the thought of this that I just $hit myself.

It’s easy to pick out the Tech fans that are coming into town.
They are all men, no women. Most are middle aged, fat, pasty and smelly with thinning hair combed over the tops of their crusty heads. They are wearing outdated bermuda shorts, dark, dress socks and sandals. They have on festive gold, short sleeve shirts emblazoned with that moronic, little bee and whatever greasy crap they had for breakfast. The rest are late teens, early 20’s, same attire but with acne infested faces and green teeth. They walk around babbling and giggling incoherently, gawking at the women and trying to get them to pose for pictures. The majority are Middle Easterners and Asians.

The old, fat ones keep hitting on me and giving me their room numbers.

Disgusting, all of them.

Why would anybody sitting on top of a good DC job want to toss it all to come to Georgia where if the DC doesn’t fix the problem nobody is going to have a job including Richt or the DC. The same guy could go to Florida and know he is in the boat for a while, or a dozen other places like Notre Dame where the guy has a five year contract to make the program work. One more year like this year and the Dawg nation is going to be looking for blood. It is like buying a used car without a warranty for a coach to take this job. Not far from what happen to O’Leary at Tech. He leaves for his dream job and gets fired before he can coach a single game. Not because he couldn’t coach, but because this very public figure, not some fly by night had a misrepresentation on his resume that did nothing for him as far as ND deciding to hire him. Like saying he had 4 kids instead of 3. Now the same guy who could have picked and chose where he was going in his career is coaching in a mid level league. Leo Mazone did it in baseball. You think any of those guys would have left where they were if they had known what was in store for them? The odds are greater here that a move by any successful DC will have the same consequences.

Not any women D coordinators but GA Tech broke new ground hiring a woman head coach. Too bad she can’t take a loss with dignity, and needs a better bra for the sideline camera shots.

What makes Kirby Smart so special? Nick Saban is the real defensive coach at Alabama. Saban was fine before he had Kirby and Alabama will be just fine after Kirby leaves. Kirby Smart claim to fame is that he worked under Nick Saban, not that Nick Saban has him as a coach.

You eggheads, I’ve been telling you all along it’s Kirby Smart.

Consider this, I was right so far about:
-Georgia beating Tech
-Georgia recovering a fumbling and getting an Int against Tech
-Georgia Beating Texas A & M easily and handily with Defensive to’s, Special Teams, and 200 yards rushing
-Urban Meyer would quit after 2009

Very few people got all 4 of those right, I did. Here’s #5:
Kirby Smart’s Coming to Georgia.

Not worried about the total passing yards. When a play needed to be made, more times than not it was. The offense they faced was prolific, you weren’t going to shut them out. They hung 39 on Texas and people are screaming for Muschamp. Garner had 15 practices and 2 grad assistances to implement a defensive gameplan and excelled imo.

Get Real, You’re right racism goes both ways, now let’s count the ways. 1. 120 D1 schools in the FBS, less than twenty AA Coaches, 2.Out of your top 20,schools, they all carrie on average67% of AA ball players. #3. There is ocunt it less than 25 AA athletic directors in D1 collegiate sports, but overall in your top money making sports 65% of all AA students. #4 Historically, can you name me more than 1 AA head coach in the SEC? #5. aLABAMA, WITH IT’S HISTORY OF RACISM,has never even intervied a AA coach, but will stand to make millions off of Mark Ingram and so many before him(ask the Bear about 1970). #6Georgia, and Auburn’s revenue went through trhe roof in the 80’s because of who? Herschel, and Bo, but to this day haven’t had one OC, or DC. I could go on and on Get Real, but go read your history first and come back with facts. Maybe you can show me the “Other Side of racism!

Who thinks Garner will get a sniff at Florida for that DC job? If they don’t offer him then we should…that is how we recruit, take what Florida leaves for us. If Garner was great at UT, why have we not won one here? Does that mean Richt is no Fulmer? No big names want it because we lose our defensive line, will lose Curran and Jones as well and that is from a defense that stunk it up…maybe the situation isn’t great and another 7-5 means the head man is gone too…think people think

John, I don’t think that the Frank Broyles award (best assistant coach) is handed out for just working for Saban. There is some merit there for Kirby’s abilities. And sure IF Smart leaves Saban won’t have any problems replacing him. Thing that bugs me is that the title game has two bulldogs running the defenses and we have been middling around with the D for 2-3 years now.

I’ve heard Reggie Herring of the Dallas Cowboys is being considered. Another mediocre coaching carousel of defensive coordinators fired from teams only to be rehired time and time again. The 2 grad assistants last night proved just because you have road experience doesn’t exactly make you the better driver. How does 2 grad assistants outcoach experienced coaches with 15+ years experience? Why do schools continue to hire assistant coaches from top tier programs thinking that it will automatically rub off on their program?

I wish the UGA haters would, at least, learn to spell and use proper grammar and syntax. I read these blogs to learn something, not to try to figure out the “inside baseball” jokes. I, too, want a first-line DC for out football team. I do not want just a “name” so that a choice is made. I would like to see KS as the choice, but ALA is going to pony up some major bucks to keep KS, and UGA knows it will take major bucks to get him come to Athens. GO IOWA and ALABAMA!
