There's no telling what voice Urban Meyer was listening to when he de-boarded a plane in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl.
I’ve been gone for a week. Thank you for taking in my mail. But who left Melky Cabrera on my doorstep?
There was no shortage of strange developments locally after I went underground (Javier Vazquez went where for whom?). But with college bowls underway and Georgia closing out its season tonight in the Independence Bowl, let’s stay with what’s timely.
Florida just got vulnerable.
If Urban Meyer was a player — effectively flip-flopping on a retirement decision — many of us would be second-guessing his level of motivation and commitment for next season. Committed people don’t make emotional decisions. Committed people are driven 24/7 and don’t flip-flop. That’s one thing that makes Meyer a great head coach, much like the guy he lost to (Nick Saban) in the SEC championship game.
No, Meyer isn’t a player. He’s a head coach. That makes what just happened worse. A player changing his mind on retirement can still sometimes get himself up for game week and squeeze out one more season. To some degree, his sudden flaws can be covered up by teammates around him. A college football head coach is always on the clock: recruiting, coaching, game-planning, guiding, leading. There is no escape.
It says here Florida fans should be worried, and Georgia fans should be happy. Why? Because Meyer isn’t so much on the clock now as he is looking at it.
There was nothing wrong with his initial announcement to step away from coaching because clearly he had given the decision a lot of thought. But everything is wrong with his decision to come back because it came out of emotion.
Don’t misunderstand. I’m not projecting the Gators’ program is going to implode. But odds are, the Gators take a significant step back. A program led by an emotionally drained head coach who’s preoccupied with concerns about his health and quality of life is one that is in danger of losing its edge.
On top of that, the Gators: 1) Are losing quarterback Tim Tebow after the Sugar Bowl (you might’ve heard something about this); 2) Lost defensive coordinator Charlie Strong (who has taken the head coaching job at Louisville; 3) Lost offensive coordinator Dan Mullen last year (he went to Mississippi State); 4) Now will be run in the interim by offensive coordinator Steve Addazio, whose offense relatively sputtered for much of this season and hasn’t been a head coach since high school.
Some hits can be overcome if a determined and resolute head coach is running things. But that clearly isn’t the case.

Georgia Tech would’ve been 4-8 had they played Kentucky’s schedule. GA Tech struggled to beat Vandy and Miss. State the 11th and 12th place teams in the SEC. Tech would have come in 10th in the SEC. Obviously the ACC trophy is a pathetic joke and no one (repeat) no one respects it. Especially the Georgia Bulldogs who whipped Tech’s butts by just attacking them with physical football. GA Tech was not up to the challenge. Evidently, the ACC is no better than the Mid-America Conference!!!!! Maybe Kentucky should add Tech as their homecoming game next year! That would be a guaranteed Wildcat victory!

Conspiracy Theory
Florida may have heard the rumblings from some recruits and decided to try and keep them in the fold. After signing day, Urban might have a change of heart…again.
But really, I want him back.He is a great coach. And I am a Georgia fan. I dont want to hear Gators talk about ” Well, If Urban had stayed you would not have beaten us.” Personally, I think 2010 will be a down year for the Gator nation. Not that they will not come back, just a down year.
As for the YECHS…Georgia won 30-24. Georgia has bragging rights ( even if Doug turned off the score on your blog so Dawg fans could not rub it in on the break). That is the way it works, if you dont like it, the solution is simple( more difficult for Tech to do). WIN next year. Until then 30-24 cry babies.
And dont tell us it does not matter. It hurts. 365. WE KNOW.Get ready for a year of hurt. Actually you should be use to it after 8 of the last 9.
Oh, and as for Waffle Houses, love Bert’s Chili and grilled cheeses sandwich or the cheese steak pattie melt. After a night of drinking, nothing better.

You can talk about UGA’s crappy bowl which they deserve but the fact is that your best team in 19 years lost to one of UGA’s worst, and it was not a fluke.
All of your childish insults the rest of the year will not rationalize the loss away, even though all GT fans. MS and MB have moved on with the loss did not mean much in the Big Picture.
30-24, we run this state and always will in the loan haul.
As for UF, anyone would have to respect what UM has done and he is one of the top 5 coaches in CF. I hope he is able to manage his health issues for his and families sake as long as he is coaching.

Sorry, couldn’t resist: Tech and UGA by the numbers:
Tech’s bowls this decade:

UGA’s bowls this decade:
Oahu, Music City, Sugar, Capital One, Outback, Sugar, Chick-fil-A, Sugar, Capital One
Wow what a comparison. I can see why a Tech fan can run his mouth after getting to a major bowl game for the first time in an eternity.

As much as I HATE losing to UF, all the best to Coach Meyer. I hope he comes back healthy, and, that the tide (no pun intended) shifts our way. Either way, I’d rather see us play UF’s best! REgarding GT, its getting rather pathetic. I really, sincerely, used to support GT, except of course when they were playing UGA. Until they beat us three straight years (with the help of an odd run of strange luck) and suddently you’d have thought they were a national power. The behavior of the GT fans then made me realize that they have few long term fans . . . they are acting like the minority of UGA fans who are fair weather and immature at best. Fact is, UGA, though not good this year, was the better team that night, and, if the two teams played ten times they’d have likely split. The bowl in Nashville points out what we all know . . . a first or second tier ACC team can handle a middle of the pack SEC team on a given day. Every year, particularly in the Chick Fila Bowl, mid level SEC teams play top level ACC teams, and, well, the results support my case. So, here’s my two cents . . . GT fans, enjoy the Orange Bowl, I hope you represent our state well. UGA fans, let’s hope for better in the years to come. We have a program to be proud of, everyone has an off year or two and I believe Coach Richt will deliver several more years of quality SEC football!

Well. I see the Monday morning quarterbacks are out in full force today,
you to Jeff. Opinions are like bellybuttons, every one has one. For me I would rather put my faith in the University of Florida President and Athletic Director. They have much more information than anyone on this blog, and if they are happy with Coach Meyer’s decision the Gator nation is too. All this other idle chatters is nothing more than
hopeful thinking that they may have a chance against the Gators now. Just keep on hoping, because that and $1.00 will get you a cup of coffee.
Now, I do have a suggestion for Coach Meyer, DELAGATE. He could borrow from Richt playbook. I think this would work a Florida, since they have far superior assistant
coaches to Georgia. It hasn’t worked to well at Georgia, but Coach Meyer has 6 or 7 of his former assistants become head coaches. Richt has been at Georgia much longer
and don’t recall any schools rushing to offer his assistants head coaching opportunities.

I think most everyone would agree if Tebow had another year of eligibility, or if the Gators had beaten Bama, this would not have come up.
Remember how Pat Riley, TWICE, said he wouldn’t be coaching the Heat due to health concerns, but as soon as they became playoff eligible he, BOTH times, decided he was just fine and came back to finish the season? I think this is a lot of the same. Urban knows they are taking a massive step back next season with all his main assistants being gone and not to mention his main squeeze, Tebow, will also be graduating. I think he just doesn’t want to deal with the first season with a new QB and and a new staff since the odds of success are slim.

5:00 Independence Bowl featuring your STATE CHAMPION Georgia Bulldogs.
Traditionally this has been one of the lower level bowls. However, SEC officials, for whatever reason, decided to give the Independence Bowl a one year elevation above mediocrity by sending the Dogs to Shreveport.
All residents of the state, regardless of college affiliation, are advised to check out the Dogs one more time in 2009.
Two exceptions to this suggestion:
1. Any Tech fans who are still sensitive to watching Caleb and Washuan run, might not want to have healing wounds reopened.
2. SEC East opponents, watch out of general interest, but do not view if you are concerned about the 2010 payback headed your way, as you imagine a new, steel curtain defense, and an offensive machine piloted by Aaron Murray.

Schultzie,
The title should be in the form of a question. Like this: Meyer’s flip-flop is bad sign for Florida, opening for Georgia???? And the answer is NOOOO!!! UGA’s problems are just as big, if not bigger than those of UF. And historically, when these two teams are both facing major issues the team with more talent usually wins (i.e. the UGA/UF rivalry). Living in the state I casually cheer for both of the Georgia teams, but I have to call this one like I see it. Florida just has UGA’s number, just like UGA has GT’s number. Although, Tech (especially, Paul Johnson, seem to care less and less due to the recent success). Just don’t see this being an open door for UGA. If anything it will make the Gators bond that much stronger.

Was the first or the second decision by Urban the emotional one? For a driven man like him, I wouldn’t assume that it was the second decision that was emotional. I also wouldn’t assume which one he put more thought into at this time of year. In other words, he announces retirement in the middle of Christmas when he wishes he was with family instead of preparing for a bowl game. There he was—wanting time with family (like most of us do). Which one was emotional? And by the way, college football is a lot of emotion—isn’t it. That is part of what makes him good (and made Tim Tebow good). By the way, I wish we had that emotion in Athens (RIcht tries but sometimes it gets packaged in “too much planned” paper).

Thanks, Jeff, for posting what most of the world is thinking regarding Meyer’s flip-flop. The house band for the University of Florida (aka ESPN) lined Rece, Lou and Mark May right up behind Urban and his poorly handled “emotional decision”. I happen to think that both decisions were made emotionally and without much analysis or deliberation. Florida will definitely slip – whether that benefits Georgia remains to be seen.

The Georgia Bulldogs came into Georgia Tech’s house at Bobby Dodd Stadium and whipped Georgi Tech’s butts on their own Grant Field. That is an absolute fact. Georgia Tech may be champions of the weak ACC but Georgia Tech is not even champions of their own home state. The better team, Georgia, played the 7th toughest schedule in the nation and beat Georgia Tech.
Face it Techies, your 11-2 record is greatly inflated by beating cup cakes! You can cry and whine all you want (and you always do) but fans of real football teams do not respect you!

There are very few WHs in South Florida, as the same Wh exec.crew knew that their last game there was in 67, when Bobby Dodd and his half pint of Jack Daniels were sent into retirement to Bitsy Grant tennis facility.

Hypothesis on the origin and nature of emotions
December 28th, 2009
10:06 am
Jeff is correct about the emotions of Urban Meyer.
The James-Lange theory on emotions states:
“Within human beings, as a response to experiences in the world, the autonomic nervous system creates physiological events such as muscular tension, a rise in heart rate, perspiration, and dryness of the mouth. Emotions then, are feelings which come about as a result of these physiological changes, rather than being their cause.”

Yes, a coach taking a leave of absence for health reasons would qualify as a bad sign for any program. While most see inspiration and dedication in Meyer’s difficult decision to stay, Jeff Schultz jumps on the “flip-flop” angle as reason to rejoice in Athens. Urban and the Florida program indeed have a challenge ahead, but sorry, it’s hard to buy the notion that the coach is no longer “determined and resolute.” The ESPN press conference I watched was of a strong program coming together, of players expressing their love for their coach, and of a proven leader aspiring to coach his team again as soon as possible. Fact is, he’s earned the right to decide against leaving now, and in the process, he’s solidified his commitment to the University. This is a rare and interesting story for college football fans, but the story is not about “flip-flopping” and none of us know how it will play out. Hold the celebrations, please.

Flagboy….the Gators were so bad for so long because Ray Graves and previous Florida HCs waited too long to recruit African-American players. It is as simple as that, my friend. The best players were mostly white up until the 80’s when Charley Pell, bless his soul, came in a started to recuit a lot of black players and Florida became better…unfortunately, Pell recruited illegally a lot of those players trying to build the back ass program up until that time. Spurrier benefited from Pell’s recruitment of black players and Florida then became a powerhouse program when Spurrier built on what Pell started. Athletics for whites in Florida was not as big a deal as athletics for whites in Georgia in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, and even the 80’s. I grew up in south Georgia and I know how important athletics was for whites in the 60’s and 70’s. High school football was huge. My parents also had a place in Florida. High school football was not much in most of Florida back then. Lake City had a decent team in north Florida and that was ahout it. All the good teams, and there were not many in Florida back then, were in South Florida and the players mostly went north to play football. Bobby Bowden came along and started to recruit black players to FSU…and they became really good. Then Miami did the same. Then Florida finally got into the groove. My school, I am afraid, was not in the forefront on racial good will. A lot of people at Florida hated Charley Pell because he cheated to get good players. But he did change the culture of football at Florida, which he never did get the credit he deserved before he died. Does that answer your question?

Losing to Kentucky, Tenn, LSU, Fla. would worry me more than getting a win over Tech. That game means nothing to either team as far as conference standing or championships. I guess you have to have something to brag about.

Big on the SEC.
I don’t think it’s about celebrations. I think it’s about it’s hard to fully get recruits to buy into your program when there are lingering questions about it. With that said, Florida won’t have any trouble getting someone else. I think it’s the most desireable coaching position in the nation at the moment. But the fact that other schools can use the uncertainty of Meyer staying will not help the program. There is no way of making this a positive.

yes. . it’s easy to be so light and breezy about that game this year. . but last year, tech put that score on some ring.
funny how some people like to change the subject when it doesn’t suit them.
as for the rest of the ACC getting better, don’t worry, it will. At least FSU and Miami appear to be coming back up. And during that time, i hope tech keeps Wommack.

Let’s hope Lane K gets put on probation then you will have a chance against Tenn., with Urban flip flopping that has ruined Fla. so you may have an up on them. I prefer leaders who know when to make a change. If Lincoln can change his mind on the War – from saving the Union to freeing the slaves (no, those are not the same at all) – a football coach can realize from one practice he loves the game and school too much to quit. You do not understand Meyer, Tebow, and Florida. Sign up every 2011 kid from Glades to Madison County because now they have even more reason to stay home and be Gators.

Look in Meyer’s eyes…that guy has the fever…coaching consumes him…it’s like being addicted to drugs…You would think he thought this thing out and weighed the pro’s and con’s of his situation.Health and family are huge factors in any man’s life but the allure of the big stage…the potential glory that comes from winning is a powerful drug as potent as crack cocaine.Meyer achieved glory and all the accolades that come with being a champion at FLA and faced with perhaps his greatest set of challenges in his time in Gainsville..losing a big chunk of his coaching staff, losing his best player, looming NFL defections of JR class, escalating health issues and it seems a serious desire of his family for him to step down..he blinked…gave in to reason for a minute…decided that living was more important than football.Yeah but then he had to face the kids…go back to the practice field and face the reality of his decision to walk away and he couldn’t do it…it’s too strong the hold football has on this guy. When you get an addict away from the dope eventually they can see how the addiction was controlling their life and regain control of themselves but the moment they return to the environment that feed their addiction the vast majority falls back under it’s spell.Urban Meyer has it bad..hopefully for him it want turn out to be a tragic story.Anyway I prefer that Meyer stay at FLA…I don’t want to hear any excuses when we kick that ass in Jax next season.

Jeff….I agree with only one of your points. Steve Addazio was not a great OC for the Gators this year. But the Gators offense will be more wide open with Brantley at QB next year. He is a very polished passer and a very good athlete. Meyer came back because the players asked him to come back…and Foley told him he could come back if he was willing to change his approach (less 24/7 stuff which was killing Meyer). Meyer will just have to learn to delegate more and spend more time with his family instead, which should help his health issues. The leave of absence offer was on the table for Meyer from the beginning. Meyer did not think he could back off what he had been doing. But the players convinced him that he should and could, and by coming back it would be best for the program and him….because, as Meyer stated yesterday, he just could not see himself coaching anywhere else but Florida because of the love and support of the Gator players and the GatorNation. Florida will be just fine in the future…maybe better. The players love Meyer, and so do the players he recruits. He just has to continue to hire great assistant coaches and delegate more authority and responsibilty to them. The culture theat Meyer established will not change because he is coming back. What will change, it the amount of time Meyer puts in at the office in the future.

He needs to take time off to rebuild himself and get healthy. The Florida program will be just fine…and who cares is 2 or 3 recruits jump ship. I would rather them jump ship than Urban Meyer anyday.

Forbes Rank's Georgia's $90 Million Football Program #3
December 28th, 2009
11:27 am
This is the beginning of the end for Meyer. His offesne stunk it up this year. Tebow was horrible–again. Coaches are gone. Mass exodus of players. And Mark Richt sits there poised—loaded with talent, Kirby Smart as new DC, no wonder Meyer quit. No way recruits will want to play for a guy taking “an indefinate leave of absense” in rebuilding years and retirement mode. If this was REALLY about his heart, no way he would consider coming back. It’s obviously about the level of competition in the SEC, namely the winningest coach in the SEC in the decade with the longest tenure, Mr. Mark Richt, the guy who who made Georgia the #3 most valuable college football team according to Forbes.
Priorities
December 28th, 2009
11:33 am
I love Coach Richt. It is not the number 1 priority in his life to win football games. Never was and never will be. Therefore he will always be at a disadvantage to Nick Saban and was always at a disadvantage to Urban Meyer. He may be again after the flip flop since it seems Coach Meyer is waffling on his list of priorities, but hopefully, Coach Meyer will learn that faith, family and football should be placed in that order and I believe he will be much better for it for his years to come.
Next up in the coming 5 years, Saban moves on to a new challenge.

I really don’t think Georgia fans or coaches can get too excited. They have enough challenges between nown and the next meeting in JAX. A few recruits may fall off, but others will take their place. A lot of times potential is just that.. potential. I’m sure Richt is more focused on hiring a DC, and finding out what he has at QB for next year. Florida is still Florida. Zook beat the dogs when they were the top of the SEC East. Florida will still be good next year. Probably not 12-1 good, but good enough to win the East.

I couldn’t agree with you more on this column. But, the only recent similar comparison we have is when Ron Zook was coach at UF. That was the perfect opportunity for UGA to take the mojo away from UF, but they couldn’t do it. Not sure what happens here, but time will tell if history repeats itself, or UGA steps it up a notch. Something tells me that Spurrier’s link to UF, and the damage he inflicted on the mental psyche of UGA’s program is the bigger and more important obstacle to overcome than the ebb and flow of a few recent events.
Wishful Thinking
December 28th, 2009
11:53 am
Even the sportswriters have to prop up the local team and inject HOPE into what is clearly evident to any rational sports fan. Other than Bama, the gulf between UF and everyone else especially UGA is HUGE and Meyers change of heart is not going to change a thing. The difference between UF and UGA is that in Florida the media doesn’t jockey the home team like they do here in GA. There are as many media haters as there are enablers. That’s why they are such a big story and drive interest/ratings. UF is a huge story nationally as evident by their 90 min. infomercial on ESPN. UGA is a regional program. Outside GA UGA’s pretty irrelevant. Same goes for UT, USCe, Auburn, LSU, etc. This story has even the GA based sportswriters hoping beyond hope that there’s a chink in the UF armor. Not going to happen when you have the type of leadership at the top (Machen and Foley). Meyer showed the world an emotional human side and only rival fanatics and homer sportwriters can misconstrue what the nation saw yesterday. A coach that professes his love for his players and the difficulty in walking away from what he has built. UF is a family and a extraordinarily close family at that. Talented football players will always want to play for Meyer and UF no matter what wishful thinking fans choose to believe.

I’m not one who thinks Urban’s flip flop will be the death of UF football. Even if he had not made his first announcement, the program was sure to take a step back. I mean, it’s hard to see how UF could go up from where they’ve been the past 4 years. Tebow was a freak of nature, built to run Urban’s offense. Tebow is now gone, the offense sputtered some this year and Charlie Strong left for Louisville. Did UF fans truly expect to win two more NCs in the next 4 years? They are still the cream of the crop in the SEC, but they have no place to go but down. Just how far down remains to be seen, but what an incredible 4 year run.

Why did Meyer quit?
December 28th, 2009

The one thing recruits need is certainty in the Head Coach. They have none of that with Florida. You saw how uncertaintly effected FSU’s recruiting for years. When Meyer quit his job, and then flip-flopped within 24 hours revealing it wasn’t really about his heart, his recruits quit on him. His players and coaches already quit on him this year. Recruits will follow suit–they’ll quit too, just like Meyer quit on his team.

FYI… saying the same stupid !#@$#@ over and over isn’t funny when it runs on for 4 pages. As a UGA fan…
1) I wish Meyer a speedy recovery but would like to see him take a year off.. everyone on UF’s schedule would so that’s a given.
2) GA TECH – congrats on winning the ACC but you still got beat by your in-state rival. Deal with it
3) UGA can’t beat UF and all UGA fans hate it… ask Alabama fans when Auburn was beating them for 7 years in a row. Domination… It happens but eventually things change (I hope). He11, Navy beat ND
4)Tech fans prefer Shirley Temple’s.. not Zima’s.

By the way, in 24 years of coaching, guess how many times Meyer has stayed for more than 5 years at one school? Zero.
Meyer won’t be coaching Florida in 2010–don’t fall for the ploy. Look at his track record: Meyer has a 1-5 year itch. He has been at Florida for 5 years. He has NEVER stayed in one place for more than 5 years—EVER! When adversity hits, Meyer quits on his team. The excuses change, but one thing remains, Meyer AlWAYS quits on his team–Meyer leaves voluntarily–he just gives up–he walks away—he can’t handle stress and adversity. Never has, never will.

Georgia better take Texas A&M seriously. Jerrod Johnson is a combo running/passing threat…and we don’t defend those worth a damn. (Lost to three of ‘em this year.)
It doesn’t matter who the DC will be. Could be a monkey pulling plays out of a hat and it wouldn’t be any worse than Willie Martinez.
And I’d hate to think that Urban Meyer’s “sabbatical” is just a tactical maneuver to keep recruits from jumping ship. If he double-clutches again…with some BS story about “doctors’ insistence”, then we’ll know.

December 28th, 2009

The thing that gets me is, if Florida has a bright future, why did so many coaches leave in 2009–Head Recruiter went to LSU rival, DC went to UL? And why are so many players leaving early for the NFL? And why did even the Head Coach Meyer himself quit? I say, since players, coaches, and the Head Coach all quit, these are insiders, the future does not look bright for Florida. They all feel something’s going on enough for a mass exodus to occur.

Whether he coaches in 2010 or not, I think Meyer’s days as a head coach are numbered. He’s young, but the health problems don’t get better as you get older. And he is about as high-strung as you get. Remember the tears after a loss (’05 or ‘06 I think). A recent SI article discussed how devastated he gets after a loss, and now he’s looking at some rebuilding post-Tebow (it’s inevitable).
Florida will have to let Meyer go sooner or later unless he makes it clear that he’s back for the long haul. You can’t have the prospect of a coach’s imminent departure hanging over your program indefinitely. If nothing else it will hurt recruiting and create a permanent cloud over the head of the interim coach.

Why did Meyer Quit?

Maybe it’s because his Recuiting Coach Gonzales quit on Meyer and headed to rival LSU and top DC Charlie Strong quit on Meyer and headed to Louisville. Meyer can’t get loyalty out of his coaches, lots of coaching turnover over the last 2 years. Good chance whatever person comes in 2010, they’ll be somewhere else in 2011, it’s happened for past few years with Meyer, no stability in his coaching situation, recruits don’t like that kind of turnover.

Hey…”Why Did Meyer Quit”…first, Meyer did not “quit.” He resigned because of health issues and for the better of the program. He came back because his players wanting him to and they told him it would be better to have half a Urban than a full of anyone else. Secondly, Strong did not leave Florida for the DC position at Louisville, idiot. He left for the head coach postion. That would be the only reason Strong would ever leave Florida. He loved Florida, and the Florida players loved him. Gonzalez left because he was not offered the OC position that went to Adazzio. He also was not doing such a great job coaching the WRs or recruiting WRs to Florida. Florida got a better WRs coach from C. Michigan and he is a much better recruiter. Every coach that has left Florida has taken on a much bigger job, except Gonzalez. Stong – HC at Louisville. Holiday – Asst HC at WW and now HC at Marshall. Mullen – HC at MSU. Name me one assistant that has left Georgia for a better position. None? Maybe because they aren’t that good at their jobs. Meyer hires great assistant coaches and prepares them to be head coaches. Georgia assitant coaching positions are dead end jobs. Van Gorder knew that and he got out of town fast…real fast.

The Dawgs couldn’t beat Zooker. I’m not sure Urban waivering on his future is going to do anything to help them.
I don’t think Urban delegates very well. He’s a workaholic, which means these things that get worse under stress are not going to be better with him coaching, unless he changes philosophy and trusts other guys to get things done it’s going to be difficult for him to coach and difficult to not coach.
This is a tough time for him. I can forgive his indecision on this matter. He obviously wants to coach and be a part of the operation at Florida and yet these health concerns and his family and future are in immediate need. He’s helping Florida’s recruiting efforts by saying “leave of abscense” though most definately.
I hope he will focus on his health first and make sure he’s healthy before thinking of coaching again and then figure out ways to mitigate the effect of stress on his body while in that role.

Can all the Georgia grads running convenience stores just leave the doors open and we can work on the honor system? Just leave a jar on the counter and we can put our money in. Good fried chicken ought to always be available. Coached at Syracuse when they were a good team…in fact, when they beat Florida up there one year (one of the reasons Florida hired him), and helped turn the Indiana program from a annual loser to a winner in the Big Ten when he was a coach there. Left after his friend and the Indiana HC passed away suddenly. He has also recruited and coached up some of the better offensive lineman to every play at Florida. Three are current NFL players, two and possible three will be drafted into the NFL this year, and he has already landed some of the best OL in the country the last two years…and is actively recruiting and has leans of two of the counties two OL prospects this year. Hey $1.4 million Shreveport vs. our $14 million BCS Orange bowl: No, UGA doesn’t travel very well to mediocrity. We do not want our kids to think that what happened this past season is OK. You are only in a BCS bowl by default. It is the least of all the BCS bowls and I wonder if the ratings will be any higher than the ACC Championship game which were abysmal. Two middle of the pack SEC schools kicked the rears of the ACC championship game contenders. I continue to be amazed that you keep running your mouth. “It is better to be silent and thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt”–Mark Twain Or, better yet, from the Scriptures, “Even a fool when he is silent appears to be wise.” What you need to do is wise up or at least put on the appearance. Myesrs condition has been an ongoing one that has not improved for years, and it will not improve simply by “redirecting” his job duties at UF.

Same here, Gatorgirl! This rivalry the past couple of years has been a lot of fun. We were lucky enough to get to go to the game last year and this and we really had a good time.
Good luck in New Orleans! We need the SEC to put on as strong a showing as possible.

I think it is impossible to say whether or not this hurts Florida or not. I suspect Meyer will be coaching at UF in 2010. If not, he will be back by 2011. These guys work a ton of hours and I think he is probably burned out and needs some time. However, type A personalities very rarely can just play golf and take time out for too long.
Regardless, I do hope Meyer gets better for him and his family. Even though, I want to beat the Gators brains out come September, it is only a game and health and family are the most important.

I called home and asked them to pick up my dry cleaning before 5:00. I have a sweater but didn’t bring it to the game since we’re in Shreveport. I’m afraid if they wait til after 5:00 the state won’t be running and everybody will be in their pickups trying to listen to the game on AM radio. Running this state must be an awesome responsibility. They say we’re the number 8 SEC team and that’s why we got this bowl.

I’m jealous of Florida, but when I heard that coach Meyer was stepping down immediately due to health reasons, my jealousy disappeared and I became fearful for Meyer, hoping that his malady was not life threatening. I don’t understand all of the distain aimed at him. I believe some sports fans have lost it. Good-natured ribbing is one thing, mean-spirited behavior is sad. If you are one of mean-spirited, take a good long look at yourself.

I agree with Sam Adams! Coaching football is an easy job with only the made-up stress you make for yourself! Stress is not having money to pay bills, food and everything that a four million a year salaried person doesn’t have to worry about! Be a soldier, a cop, a nurse or all the others who have to work and scrap a living! Yeah try living on faith and give that four million away to charities and maybe you might get a little respect! Man up you sissy!!!!!!!

to our friend ‘$1.4 million Shreveport vs. our $14 million BCS Orange bowl’ – ok nerd…you DO KNOW that bowl proceeds +are SPLIT among conference members…yes? You realize this? So your bowl payout is higher individually, but collectively the ACC’s is less. (i know you nerds can do fractions) Also…how many BCS games has GT played in? Ever? Oh…that’s right…this is the FIRST!!
Collect your thoughts, grab your calculator, take a few breaths from the paper bag you use when a GIRL approaches to speak to you at your drafting table, and realize that you’ve had one (very) good season…which will be extremely difficult to repeat, as the teams in your conference start to catch up to your cute, little, high-school, trick-play offense. Enjoy your one season of relevance, b/c it will be short lived.
that is all.

When they told me they were going to tattoo “We Run This State” on the running backs’ arms I was apprehensive because I am still new on the job. I realized a lot of people from Tech and the SEC schools would be joking a lot about that. I did talk them out of black helmets again. We’re going to be seeing pictures of those black helmets for a long time. Surprise uniforms can be effective though. We have a surprise uniform today that should really take A&M out of their game.

When I first heard the news about Urban Meyer’s health problems my thoughts were for him to get better. But as I watched the events unfold and his interview on ESPN I saw the old Ubran Meyer who called time with seconds to go in a game that was well beyond reach. I think the boy is really worried he is going to get a worse whipping than Alabama gave them and he is grasping at straws to motivate his players anyway he can. Hopefully I am wrong and if he really has problems they can be corrected and he can go on coaching but the whole thing smells like a rat to me.

Bamma Jamma, I disagree about Meyer, NCG, and next year. I hope we beat Texas, but the Tide has to stay focused. When we waltz in expecting an easy win, it gets ugly quickly, e.g. Utah last year.
Offensively, we should be pretty deep next year, but we’re losing seven senior starters on Defense plus Rolando. We do get Hightower back, though.
The monster challenge next year is going to be how many SEC teams we play coming off bye weeks. Four out of our five SEC West opponents will be coming off byes as well as UT and USC for a total of six teams! No one else in the SEC has to play more than one other SEC school coming off a bye. IF we make it back to the SECCG next year, it will be damn near miraculous.

The Meyer story is just weird. He changes his mind because of a single “spirited practice?” So, if the practice had just been average, then his status would still be “resigned” rather than “leave of absence?” What if the practice had been terrible, with no spirit at all – maybe Meyer would be finished forever with the game of football. Never has so much ridden on one practice.
If that makes sense to anyone, help me out here. It’s more likely that UF gave him a sweet incentive to remain the head coach at least through signing day in Feb.
Also, there are some seriously deep pockets among Bull Gators. It’s possible that a contract renewal that is even bigger than Mack Brown’s might be in the works. Wouldn’t surprise me at all to Meyer come back this fall “refreshed” and armed with a new $6 mill per year contract.

The good news for Meyer is he’s finally getting some press. If you check Google Labs, rookie coach Kiffin has TWICE the hits of Meyer over the last 12 months. Meyer has a decent spike at the end with the SECCG and the pseudo-retirement but Kiffin is still 2x as interesting this year.

Man, that’s gotta hurt.
I agree with Bobbi Dud and Sam Adams: how much stress does one really have when their job is to get incredibly rich coaching football? Once these guys sign a big contract, they can pretty much be lousy at their jobs and do no worse than to get fired into a life of luxury and leisure. Their main concern at that point is a bruised ego and maybe boredom, but if they have any personality at all they can usually land a color commentator or studio analyst job somewhere. Sorry, that’s not stress as most people know it.

I just don’t get how this is going to work. I used to suffer from stress related ailments so severe that people called 911 because they thought I was having a heart attack. This isn’t something where you can take a month’s vacation and declare yourself cured. It stays with you all your life and you have to make major changes in how you live your life and how you eliminate or manage those issues that cause you stress and anxiety. You can work long hours in a stressful situation without suffering attacks if you can keep a perspective. Listening to his press conference and subsequent interview on ESPN showed me how far he really has to go. You can’t fool your body, it is telling him that he needs to make some major changes and unless he truly devotes the time and effort needed to do that, these attacks will get worse and more frequent. I made the changes and it has been 20 years since I have had a severe attack, but every now and again my body gives me a reminder that I am not managing some issues as well as I need to and I have to reset myself. I wish him the best and I hope he really does put his family first.

I think this “indefinite leave of absence” could hurt UF recruiting more then retiring. If I was a recruit there are a few things about this that would worry me. First, there is no guarantee that meyer will be back. Second, lets just say he comes back in a month or two, maybe a month or two after that he rethinks his decision and retires. Now you are talking about going into spring practice or summer workouts without a head coach. Finally, lets say that he comes back and stays for next season, who’s to say he doesn’t leave then? He’s a great coach, but if he is physically unable to handle stress then he’s in trouble. If you’re a recruit do you want to go to a school that has this high of a probability of a coaching change?
I think what the guy needs to do is go ahead and retire, I think that will help uf more in the long run. After a year or so off, get an offensive coordinator job at a big time school with a big time head coach. There will be less stress, but you still get to do what you like to do and you can still get some good money. I think he would have to go somewhere with a proven big time defensively minded head coach, otherwise there would be talk of him taking over. Just imagine if he went to alabama, got about 1 million a year, and all he had to do was work with the offense while saban worked on the defense. It would be dangerous.

Charlie Strong was the DC before Urban Meyer got to Florida. And if I remember right, was very pissed when Florida past him up for the HC job to Meyer. The reason he didn’t leave is because there were no HC jobs open at the time or none he was interested in. Don’t take or believe my opinion about Coach Addazio…then consider this from the current Gator players: “[Addazio’s appointment] was [met with] one of the loudest rounds of ovation I’ve ever been a part of in my entire life,” senior quarterback Tim Tebow said. “You could see coach Addazio getting emotional. The team has so much respect for him.” Tebow said the ovation went on for “3-to-4” minutes when Meyer made the announcement in the tarmac at the Gainesville Regional Airport Sunday morning. Also on the Addazio bandwagon is junior center Maurkice Pouncey, who told the media on Monday that he is “one of the greatest coaches in history.” “He knows how to lead the team, get the team going,” Pouncey added. “He’s a father figure on the field and off the field. Great guy.” Believe what you want. The Gators will not suffer on or off the field with Coach Addazio leading the way…and Coach Meyer helping out in the background until he gets well. The recruits have a lot of respect and trust in Addazio as well. His appointment will help keep most, if not all, the recruits…and help the Gators get more.

Realist…it has nothing to do with recruits or recruiting. It had all to do with the players and the current players relationship with Coach Meyer. Period, but you can believe anything you want. But you are dead wrong. Florida is much bigger than 2 or 3 recruits leaving because of a coach. I am sure Mullen, Willingham, or the Oklahoma coach would have been able to salvage most of the class and bring some of their own recruits with them. As I said, you are dead wrong about why Meyer came back.

So you went to UF from 1970 to 73? Then you must surely remember how bad the gators sucked until, oh, 1991. UGA regularly pounded you in Jax and you had NEVER won the SEC. Spurrier finally turned things around.

I’m a little concerned with all this love gatorgirl and tampagator are professing between the coaches and the players at Florida. The coaches love their players, the players love their coaches. I even seen the phrase “father figure” thrown in there. It sounds like a lot of bromance going on to me.

Hey Grinch… You obviously went to a non accredited Clayton County High School.Just exactly what are you proud of about uga’s tradition since 1991? The fact that your school is irrelevant when compared to UF,UT,LSU, and BAMA? The fact is that you can only hope something bad happens at other schools,so, you can hope that your do nothing coach can maybe, just maybe be the “blind squirrel that finds an acorn”.

Tampa Gator,
Does UF’s Sports Information Director know you’re doing his job for him?
And thanks for sharing the brief bio of your academic triumphs while and undergrad at God’s little acre of Heaven on Earth. Did you by chance to take Humility 101 while matriculating in Gainesville? If so, I bet that ‘F’ played hell with your GPA.
Not to worry. Your myriad outstanding accomplishments more than cancelled out what was obviously an aberration.
What’s in the drinking water in Gainesville anyway? Whatever it is, it breeds pompous asses.

TampaGator, I would not be so sure that an assistant coach will make a great HC just because the players want him. We learned the hard way in 1987 when Arnsparger left and the players made it well known they wanted Mike Archer, the DC, to take over. He ended up getting fired after 4 seasons.
The opinions of 18-22 year old kids should be the last to take into account of who you would want as HC, IMO.

GT is getting the ACC’s undeserved trip to a BCS bowl and yet, one thing will never change. For as long as I can remember, they have been jealous of Georgia! All of their blogs scream….. I am jealous of Georgia.
Hey GT, nobody twisted your arm to leave the SEC and get into a basketball conference. Let’s wee….. how did that work out? Well, if you had remained in the SEC– this year you would have finished fourth or fifth in the SEC East and be going— nowhere!

First of All Nice Article Jeff. Second thought…Florida has a ton of talent, however The Gators will lose between 20 to 24 players off the 2009 sqaud due to graduation, early entrance to NFL Draft or career ending injury(maybe). Coach Meyer will lose 64 percent of his offense(Tebow). The offensive line will be losing 3 starters if the Pouncey Twins decide to leave early(all indications they are leaving). The tight end and leading recievers will move on. The defense will lose their coordinator, as well as 80 percent of their tacklers from 2009.
The SEC East will be up for grabs in 2010. The TOP Questions that need to be answered are:
Can Tennessee find a quarterback?
Can Georgia find a defensive coordinator that can stop the SEC Offenses?
Will Aaron Murray be able to run the offense at UGA effectively?
Will Steve Spurrier be able to finally put together a complete season and compete for the SEC EAST?
Will the Florida Offense be decent?
Will Kentucky use the incoming talent to compete at a championship level?
Does LSU Implode or do they find the players to fill major roles on offense and defense?
Does Auburn start off the season 5-0 or is 3-2 more realistic?
How much Improvement does Mississippi State make in the second year of Dan Mullen?
Does Arkansas have to talent to compete with Alabama, Ole Miss, and LSU?
Does Ole Miss find a solid replacement for losing their go to tailback, wildcat, reciever?
This is how I see the SEC 2009
South Carolina
Tennessee
Kentucky/Georgia
Florida
Vanderbilt
Alabama
Auburn
Arkansas
Miss. State
Ole Miss
LSU
The EAST will most likely be a toss up…Tennessee loses too many coaches, quarterback, RB, DB, TE, WR, DE. Georgia loses 2 DT, LB, QB, and hires new DC. Florida loses too much , plus coaching staff changes, Kentucky fills in some holes.., Vanderbilt gets better….South Carolina replaces some small holes with better talent.
Alabama..too much talent..too good of coaching and they played alot of underclassmen all year…Auburn gets second year under Malzahn….LSU is in complete disarray…Arkansas returns major talent…Miss State will get better….Ole Miss will need to fill some major holes

Call it Like it Is,
Do you really believe that Florida will win the East. The Program is in a “rebuilding mode” once the Sugar Bowl is over. Too many players and coaches are leaving. I hope Urban gets well, but the Term “Rebuilding” replaces RELOADING for Florida.

For all the Gator fans this is a time to pause and reflect where the program is and its direction. One loss in the SEC Champ game did not get Urban all stressed out, rather than his introspection of where the conference is and what it will be like in the years to come. Having realized that now with Strong whose defense saved the team from a couple of losses GONE, #15 the heart of the team GONE along with the half dozen or so key defensive and offensive personnel GONE and with Alabama taking over the mantle and the rest of the SEC making strides to guarantee that UF will have more than one loss in each season during 2010 and beyond has made Urban realize that he cannot and will not be able to continue to sustain the success from the last couple of years, despite having a top rated recruiting class. It has finally dawned on him that coaching in the SEC is not like coaching BGSU & UTAH especially with the intense media focus on all the legal and disciplinary issues the players were in.
Having said that, Urban’s alter ego is in search for a situation that will allow him to refocus the media’s attention while he sits back and re-evaluates his options, especially with the ND job out of reach at least for a couple of years. The so called “ Leave of Absence “ only allows him to examine the possibilities of him embarking on a new direction. With Del Rio being one game away from unemployment, with Tebow being mentioned as a possible draft pick for the Jaguars (albeit for the purposes of improving the fan base and attendance) why not hope for Mr. Weaver to re-unite the Urban with his savior. This besides the fact that not only will there be a significant financial windfall for Urban, but also provides him the opportunity to stay in state and continue to enjoy the adulation from the Gator fans.
People such as Urban and their egos needs constant stoking and hates for their weaknesses to be in public view…………just ask the OLD BALL COACH!!!
