Even Independence Bowl can tell us something about Georgia

Mark Richt entertained the horde of media (slight exaggeration) in Shreveport this week.

Mark Richt entertained the horde of media (slight exaggeration) in Shreveport this week.

Let’s start with two facts. 1) Seven SEC teams landed in better bowl games than Georgia: Alabama (BCS), Florida (Sugar), LSU (Capital One), Mississippi (Cotton), Tennessee (Chick-fil-A), Auburn (Outback), Kentucky (Music City); 2) Only 6,800 of the Bulldogs’ 12,000-ticket allotment to the Independence Bowl was sold, which of course leads to the obvious question: How did they find 6,800 people to go to Shreveport?

So it’s safe to assume that most of you are not thrilled with the fact that the final memory of the 2009 season will be the Dec. 28, 5 p.m. time slot tonight on ESPN 2. (Programming note: The Independence Bowl follows the Premier League soccer game between Wolverhampton and Manchester City.)

But I’m here to tell you that tonight’s game does mean something for Georgia’s season. Besides, it’s worth watching if for no other reason than more updates from the minds of Urban Meyer.

This is what a win over Texas A&M tonight accomplishes. It leaves Georgia at 8-5, which aesthetically is a more pleasing than 7-6. It also means the Bulldogs will have gone 4-1 in their final five games after the Florida loss, including the win over Georgia Tech.  (The lone defeat came to Kentucky, a development so stunning that even Rich Brooks is going to retire.) A win keeps recruits who are on the fence about Georgia at least still on that fence, or maybe even pushes them over it. A loss possibly tips them in the wrong direction.

The biggest problem with tonight’s game is it doesn’t give Georgia fans a true preview of next season. Next season’s quarterback won’t be playing, which stems from coach Mark Richt’s decision not to take the redshirt off of freshmen Aaron Murray or Zach Mettenberger. In a sense, next season’s defense also won’t be playing because Richt hasn’t hired a defensive coordinator yet (nor at least two other assistants).

But what you can take from tonight’s game is seeing what underclassmen are making plays tonight. Who looks like they are treating the game as a bonus and not a booby prize?

We can also find out something about Richt. This will be the first game he has coached since he fired Willie Martinez. Given the pressures and time constraints stemming from the job search, as well as recruiting, I want to see where the man’s level of energy and enthusiasm is at coaching a football game.

It’s not the game you wanted. It’s not the day or time slot you wanted. But it’s not a game devoid of meaning.

Honestly though Jeff, I’m almost more excited to see what the A&M offense looks like vs the defense they are currently running at GA.

Not a scheme thing so much, but to see what rest and hopefully focus means to the way the young guys play on defense.

I’m interested to see if the OL blocks well even against a powder puff A&M defense and whether or not the receivers play well.

Mark really needs the offense at the very least to play a crisp well executed game..whether the score is Arkansasesque or not.

the problem this year has been that 1. we couldn’t run the ball. 2. willie’s defense sucked.

I think you’re right, Jeff. How the team plays and how Richt coaches will say a lot about this program and where it is headed. If they go out and lay an egg, that will speak volumes about Richt’s ability to motivate.

The main thing is that this trip has to be used as motivation in 2010. Next time UGA is stinking it up at the half of a game, all Richt has to say is “men, do we want to play our butts off or do you want to do Christmas in Shreveport again??”

Certainly disappointed to be here. Certainly deserved it. Jeff, you are right though. It’s not a game devoid of meaning and I do not expect the team will phone this in. You make an interesting point about the last 5 games. Unfortunately, I think the UK loss was needed as I do not think the necessary changes would have been made had that not happened.

I like the fact we got another four weeks to practice and get better as a team. However, we are long way away from turning the ship. The good news is that the SEC East is a little muddled next year. The last time we ran a red-shirt freshman out there as QB, we won 8 games and played pretty well (Green in 2001) so it’s possible. I choose to be optimistic that things will be better. Nine months of the alternative is not the way I plan on spending the off season.

I expect to see Ealy and King continue to dominate as a rushing duo.On Defense?Well the coaches have been fired, the seniors and draft thinking juniors will be playing their last game at UGA…what’s more important to them…winning the game or not getting hurt? How motivated will any of them be?Our offensive guys have a lot to play for same could be said for the A&M offense..how bad would it look to be shutdown by a team that doesn’t have a defensive staff together..so I expect some offensive fireworks 38-35 somewhere along those lines.

Uhh, 21-13 isn’t exactly being taken to the woodshed. However, if that does classify as a woodshed beatin’ then 30-24 and gaining over 300 yards on the ground against a 10-1 team would be the same if not worse.

Jeff is right. This game means a lot to our recruiting and to our pride. We need to go out there and show what SEC football is all about. I really don’t think our defense will be affected by the absence of Martinez. He never blitzed and ran a base defense 80 percent of the time. I think our fill ins will probably do about the same. There’s no way of knowing how the ACC’s runner up would do against the SEC’s runner up because they are never going to play each other. So comparing conferences is just stupid and it would be nice if everyone would stop trying to do so. Since that is never going to happen, I would guess Florida would beat Clemson like that have been beating UGA for the past decade and a half. However, we will never know since they never play each other so STFU ACC and SEC fans!

UA- Hard to predict what Dawgs team will show up. But if the A&M defense is as bad as they say, I would say 28-27 (pick a team) because we will run the ball and limit possessions. I don’t think A&M will hit the 40 point mark like some are predicting. I think our best defense will be to grind out the clock and just simply limit possessions.

This is a major crossroads for Richt and the GA program. The VA. Tech AD stopped what would have been the best Christmas possible for all who wear the Red and Black… and the clock is still ticking. There needs to be a D Coordinator before signing day. Remember what happened to Tuberville when he started firing coordinators? I hear Larry in my head voicing all kinds of anxiety:

Larry: “My God man! Can these guys possibly stop the other guys without a coach.. we got a couple of Grad students trying stick fingers in the Dyke? Can they possibly stop this flood?”

Lorne: “Well Larry, Docta Adams just set up a motor scooter drivin safety program for the bulldawgs and …”

Larry: “Shut up Lorne… just shut up. We are in danger of losing to a 6 and 6 team that trots a high school defense onto the field and you are telling me about some freaking detail that has nothing to do with anything!”

Lorne: ” Well Larry, I remember in 1979 when coach Dooley lost to Wake Forest at home and they got new red and black socks for the seniors and…”

Larry; “I knew I should have stayed retired.”

I think it would be a great marketing idea to have a SEC-ACC challenge every season in early September or late August to parallel the ACC-Big 10 matchup in basketball. Pit the teams against each other based on their finish from the previous year. It would give a solid out of conference game and fans would eat it up. Granted, certain parameters would have to be set (no UGA-GT, UF-FSU, or Clem-USC matchups), but it would be a great marketing tool. Thoughts? I’ll hang up and listen.

It’s a thin line between winning and losing SD Dawg.Think about it this way…if King and Ealy were ready to go in game 1 I don’t think we are sitting on 7-5…I say 9-3 at the least. My major complaint against the defensive staff had been 3 or 4 years of suspect recruiting outside of DT’s.Seems like that group got the message 1 year too late.As for the future…the offense is going to be loaded next year….this has to be the best collection of talent Richt has ever had at UGA including 08..Defense….a lot like this year’s offense…a lot of unknowns but some youngsters with potential.

St. (a classic road trap game), UT (3 of the last 4 years…and a great Defensive coordinator), UK (road game and a lot of young talent), Florida (we all know that history), Auburn (road game and a tough place to play) and GT. That is 7 potential losses. Do I think they lose all 7? Heck no. Do I think they could lose as many as 5 of them? Yes. It’s easy to pick out the Tech fans that are coming into town.
They are all men, no women. Most are middle aged, fat, pasty and smelly with thinning hair combed over the tops of their crusty heads. They are wearing outdated bermuda shorts, dark, dress socks and sandals. They have on festive gold, short sleeve shirts emblazoned with that moronic, little bee and whatever greasy crap they had for breakfast. The rest are late teens, early 20’s, same attire but with acne infested faces and green teeth. They walk around babbling and giggling incoherently, gawking at the women and trying to get them to pose for pictures. The majority are Middle Easterners and Asians.

The old, fat ones keep hitting on me and giving me their room numbers.

Disgusting, all of them.

Prediction: the UGA defense will show a number of new wrinkles: more stunts, more blitzing. OK, maybe not new stuff, but rarely utilized under Willie. I think Richt wants to see how his players respond, since they prefer being more aggressive. The only problem is the UGA defensive backs can’t cover (Evans) or even tackle (Jones, Cuff) Sonny Clusters.

i really hate that the bowl games are more about business than matchups(although as a business man i understand).. sure do wish we could’ve played Clemson last night..or maybe even Va. Tech here in Atl…when picking bowl games winners, the first thing you should look at is,,,which team is happier to be where they’re at… with that said, i kinda think A&M is a whole lot happier to be playing in shreveport than UGA is…and that scares me a lil bout this game..

wouldn’t mind seeing the freshmen play at least one series, they could still redshirt after that, but i doubt it would happen..

Georgia will give up several big plays and AM will score at least 24 but that means UGA will score 27 or 30. Georgia 30 AM 24. After the Sugar Bowl Georgia names Kirby DC.

Recruiting: Based on all the recruiting websites information and recruits talking about where they stand, UGA is going to have a dismal close on it’s recruiting this year. Regardless of what Florida does. Simply put, the kids are going to programs that are up or on the way up. Georgia had a down year and is idle at best, for the moment at-least. If Georgia wants to keep its current top 10 class, especially with it’s defensive recruits, they need to make a big splash with a defensive coordinator hire and soon. On the offensive side of the ball, I am afraid the dawgs are not getting many bites from big name targets. Maybe the lack of focus on offensive recruiting this year and concentration on stacking-up the defensive side of the ball. I do know the dogs need another big time receiver beside D’Rick Rogers with AJ a season from being in the league. All signs show all the 4 and 5 star kids, especially receivers and backs not seriously considering UGA. As far as running back, Mack Brown says he is still all Gator, I don’t see Marquis Lattimore the running back from SC coming to UGA either. Recruits add UGA to their recruiting list as a safety net, not as a desired chose, why because UGA can’t break the consistency SEC slump and more importantly be in the hunt year in and our for NC. Beating Florida above .500 would go along way to establish that. Build it and the recruits will come.

The conclusion and answer. UGA needs to meet their needs with 3 star kids. Hire a great defensive coordinator, straighten out the defense and special teams this year. While the new quarterback is being groomed. Based on the following schedule listed below, it is possible we have a 8-4 team, maybe another 7-5. With much improvement as we do not get blown out of games. If the ball bonces our way, we could conceivable go 9-3.

The elixir to UGA problems is simply winning. Also style points, recruits pay attention to that. Does UGA make their players successful on the field. Which UGA has not over the past few years. Once players start playing at our above their potential due to coaching, it shows on Saturdays. Build it and they will come.

UGA fan for life. Former 1-aa football player.

First of all the game is starting at 5:00 Eastern so that it is over before Monday night football. Something about the business. Second, the way UGA played this year this is exactly what they deserved, but they will not lose to this team so for all of those touting 0-2 vs. the “Least 12″ quit smoking the pipe. TAMU travels very well and they really get into their football team, no matter the bowl or record. We will be much bette next year and the practice that these kids are getting will be invaluable in the long run. Old fashioned ball control offense will keep their O off the field, but the D definitely needs to GATA.

But the problem with this game, to me, is that UGA matches up better with many BCS teams than they do Texas Tech. I think they match up better against Iowa, of course Tech, Cinci, Boise, TCU, (Those three are a joke and shouldn’t be allowed to be in the top 20) and of course both Rose Bowl teams. For all of you Dawgs fans yelping about 30-24 this season, that ain’t exactly a statement score. Just like last year’s score wasn’t. The only statement that can be made between last year and this year is that BOTH PROGRAMS are pretty much equal at this point. This game tells us if this team quits or not. I don’t think they will. That has been the attitude lately in Athens and the kids just don’t quit. Not during a game and not during the season. I don’t think that a loss will influence recruiting one way or another. The kids that have commited will still be coming.

The stats prove how one sided the game truly was, even without the best player in the stadium being on the field. Factor in how UGA had two surefire TD’s that their receivers dropped in full stride, it could have easily had been a slaughter.

In 1943 & 44 they used players from other schools and they were also caught cheating during 1997-2003. So take away those 6 “wins” of theirs where they clearly cheated, and UGA is nearly 30 games ahead

The only people that are uneasy about their program are tool fans. Their best team since Colorado’s national title in 1990 and you can’t even beat Richt’s worst ever team, WITHOUT his best player none-the-less? And after Gailey’s studs say see ya after the Orange Bowl, it’s obvious next year is going to be a blood bath.

HOW ABOUT THE U, CAN WE HAVE THEM. The U has good looking coeds that know how to dress for TV audiences. The U is local and would fill up the stadium. The U has great tradition. The U throws passes that are completed. The U has a national following. The U sells out its stadium. The U is after all is “THE U”. And best of all, The U has the Gators so scared they won’t even play them anymore. We love “The U” for our bowl game.

Is the UNC DC under consideration by UGA? Only one team managed to put 30 points on the UNC defense this year (FSU 30). Only 3 teams put up as many as 20: (GaTech 24), (Miami 24), NCState 28). VaTech, Pitt,, UConn, Duke and UVa scored one TD each. Only Bama and possibly Fl. in the SEC can say as much.

I think UGA needs to move to the ACC for a couple of years so they can win some conference titles and go undefeated.

All the GT fans have talked about all season (on this blog) was how they were going to dominate UGA for years. A streak of one in the past 9 isn’t much of a streak and DEFINITELY isn’t dominating. Enjoy your Orange Bowl this year. It’ll be like your 1-in-a-row streak over GA…. except Iowa will probably spank you.

” With the decision by Coach Q to quit his job, team A is clearly to benefit. Every recruit from here on out should be told of Coach Q and his departure. While our boys have struggled in the past, now is the time for our Team A to stand tall etc. . . . . . ”

If you know your offensive line is being manhandled, why keep trying to run the ball right up the middle. Be creative with the run. I forgot our OC has no creativity!

The ESPN scroll just said AM does not have any players draftable, and their backup Qb just caught a pass down the middle so why are we getting our asses kicked by this team who is ranked worse in defense than we are? Its hard being a bulldawg fan I am picking at every little thing here because I am frustrated.

Good for you for being a coach. You must be a very special person. College Football is not high football or perhaps Pee Wee football in which you may be a coach, it is a business in which fans like me spend thousands of dollars.

That is just something you are going to have to deal with, Mitchy Boy.

This is a sad game. It’s obvious by the blog comments. And UGA’s offense in non-existent. Kickoff TD and blocked punt put the score where it is. Hopefully, CMR and Bobo will adjust and score a few TDs in the 2nd half… like the Falcons did yesterday, to put it away. Time for another drink.

Georgis’s defense was great in last nights year ending bowl game. Still — the team needs to blitze a ‘whole lot’ more. The linesmen on defense were super as stated but the team as a whole needs to think more outside the box. Its called ‘creative’ defensive play calling . More blitzes coming more often from all angles!!!
The offense is another story . Repeated straight ahead plunges, off the tackle and guard positions, will just not do. A&M was deflated and demoralized by the 3rd period – plaged by errors and penelties.. This in fact along with some creativity allowed Ga. to move the ball almost at will. Anyone could see just how tired the opposition became..So it is – the team needs creative calls that are not constantly inside the box. First and foremost get a new, creative offensive play callinh coach.

U of G needs an entirerly new offenive coaching staff. One with imagination.
I for one am tired of seeing Mr Richt play not to lose rather than playng to win.

Joe Cox stands up well against some of the greatest QB’s:

Tom Brady 1998 Michigan

Joe Cox 2009 Georgia
138 Effic, 24 td’s, 15 int’s, 2584 yards
——————————————-

——————————————-
Dan Marino, Pittsburg, 1982
58% completion, 2432 yards, 17 td’s, 23 int’s, 67 pass rating

Joe Cox, Georgia, 2009
56% Completion, 2584 yards, 24 td’s, 15 int’s, 138 pass rating
