Don't you wish you could tailgate in New Jersey? Yeesh.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J — Before we get to today’s Falcons’ game, I have two important travel updates:
1.) Our beat guy, Darryl Ledbetter, rolled into Manhattan at 2:53 a.m. I know this because he sent me a very excited text message, which of course I ignored until about 8:30. For those who missed our travel experiences, and if you want to know how D-Led blew it by not following my lead, click here.
2.) We STILL almost didn’t make it the game. Our taxi from the hotel did I nice little swerve and side slide on the New Jersey Turnpike after the doofus driving the Lexus in front of us lost control because he was driving too fast, spun out and kissed the wall. Our driver apologized for startling us. Apologize? For what? He just gave me a blog lead. Of course, now Ledbetter is screaming at me for not taking a picture of the Lexus.
Anyway, I can now say I’ve experienced
everything. Having a cab driver from Brooklyn apologize was the last thing on my Bucket List.
Inside the stadium, things are fine. Well, not great for the Falcons. As I’m sure you know, they officially were eliminated from playoff contention last night when Dallas upset New Orleans. Of course, I know most us knew they realistically were out of it following last week’s lost to the Saints.

The scene, the stadium and my press box neighbors, radio teammates Dave Archer and Wes Durham. Wes wanted me to point out that their windows were open.
But it doesn’t make today’s game against the New York Jets uninteresting. I realize athletes are human. But an NFL season is only 16 games. To me, there’s no excuse for letting up. I plan on making this central to the column later. But the Falcons have a lot of questions to answer — about Matt Ryan, about the offense, about the team in general. They need to get the most out of these “meaningless” games as possible.
About Ryan and Michael Turner: If you missed the earlier flashes on Twitter — follow @AJCFalcons and @JeffSchultzAJC!!!– both will start. How a quarterback with turf toe and a running back with a high ankle sprain hold up in this weather remains to be seen. But it will be good to see the offense somewhat intact again.
By the way, the weather is good right now. Cold, but clear skies. The snow on the field has been cleared to the side. So that shouldn’t be a factor. Let’s just say things are a little more under control here now than they are at LaGuardia. Or on the Turnpike.
I’ll check back in a little while.

I imagine turf toe will be numb from the cold, but gang green is another matter. Looking forward to seeing a similar effort to last week’s game with a winning season on the line. Turner is well rested (sans his injury) and should be a difference-maker. But a dome team in freezing weather is always a question. I know Matt Ryan has played in new England cold, so we need our wide outs to catch and hold the ball. I’ll bet Gonzo is the go-to guy today. Go Falcons… YOU CAN DO IT!!

Clusters’ Keys to the Game:
1. What happens with Turf Toe in cold weather? Will the green toe turn blue? Will Matt be able to go with cold toes?
2. How will Arthur Blank do on a cold-weather sideline? Will we see an overcoat and a muffler? What color muffler?
3. Are there residual effects from last night’s burrito?

TRIVIA QUESTION:
Which of the following Franchise quarterbacks are out of playoffs?
- Joe Flacco
- Mike Vick
- The CHOKE
I think it’s humorous that the CHOKE would decide to play with nothing on the line. When his teammates needed him, he didn’t have the guts or toughness to lead the team down the stretch, and instead let the backup take the heat for his poor 2-4 play over his last 6 games prior to the Tampa game.
He might as well keep his SORRY butt on the sideline cheerleading, something he is more suited for.

When we was playing ball we had a game in Gainesville in the snow and we was all wrapped up on the sidelines and shivering when Coach came over to us and said, “Jeff, wipe your runny nose. You’re going in.” We was a team so we both went in together. We was supposed to block and Jeff was supposed to run the ball right behind us. Stinky Wintes was playing tackle. It was the best we had to throw at ‘em. The ball was snapped and Stinky knocked back 3 players off the line. We burst through and leveled a linebacker and a pesky safety. Jeff, on the other hand was slow to hit the hole and was tackled for a loss. Coach called us right off the field and asked Jeff what happened? Ol’ Jeff just looked at Coach and said, “

teams that cannot score from 1st & goal from the 2 in the NFL are just pathetic to watch. Putrid. Peria Jerry sits out injured most of the season, D. Reevis making plays all over the field. I am disgusted, as usual at this time of year. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

They’ve been holding all day. Refs decide to call it when it doesn’t matter at all. Defense keeping us in yet another game. They need some help (but who doesn’t) but at least the defense has come to play in nearly every game this year. If not for all the big plays, this would be a decent (not good but decent) defensive unit

They may not be the most talented bunch, but you can see they give it their all every game. Right now, the offense looks like they just wanna get on the plane and come back to Atlanta.

If the Falcons lose this one, and they certainly don’t look like they want to win it, this season will for sure be the most disappointing season in a long string of disappointing season because it is the first one where I think everyone expected them to finally end the long streak. When the Falcons were good in the past it always seemed like a fluke, and you knew it wasn’t going to last, but I think we are bought into the idea that things were finally different. Not saying coaching is to blame, there certainly had been a lot of crappy luck with injuries, but it could an especially bitter off season. But we still have a chance. Go Falcons. Wake up!

I think Turner should lock it down for the season. I didn’t see anything on the end of that one carry that a healthy ankle shouldn’t be able to survive. I guess we can thank Chris Gamble of Carolina who loves to hit low when players are already well on their way down. He ruined Culpper’s career, Turner may be on the same road.
I’m happy with the effort with from the defense today. I’ll admit they are being helped out by a not so sharp rookie in Sanchez. This team still has no pass rush. I think next year there will be no salary cap, due to the clause in the last labor agreement. Maybe the Falcons can go buy a defensive line. All four need to go. Lofton at LB is very solid, I like what I see from Decoud at the safety position, Grimes is doing better. The rest of the defense could use an upgrade.

Dude get a grip on that man crush. I’m the biggest Falcons fan there is, but even that play call had a man wide open in the back of the end zone while Ryan is still laser focused on #88, even though he was surrounded by 4 Jets. The Jets defense went to sleep on that play and didn’t get there in time, but they knew where Ryan wanted to go, and even Gonzo admitted as much in his post game interview.
The story of this game is not a mediocre performance by a second year QB with a lot of questions still to be answered. The story of this game is the Falcons Defense that outplayed the best defense in the league. Redneck nation wants a savior and so all we will hear this week is how Ryan saved the game. I’m happy about any Falcons win, but I don’t want none of that kool-aid.

It’s nice to see the players, even the ones new to the team, understand why the 9-7 record is so important this year. You can’t start building a team to win anything in the NFL until you prove you can win consistently. A lot of folks remember the Falcons superbowl year but not many remember what the year before and how it set up the big year. The Falcons were building a team but had lost 8 straight games, and then it clicked and they won the next 7 in a row, almost 8. Coming of that 7-1 record at the end the year, they followed that up with 14-2. Those off years do mean something and winning 9 games has significance this year.

I stand humbled and shamed. I thought the Jets would roll over the Falcons today given how poorly the offense played for most of the game and how good the Jets’ defense is. I have also mercilessly dogged Brent Grimes all season for being too small to man up against any receiver that’s bigger than him – and they ALL are – and not much of a tackler. But let me be the first to say that he was great today – 2 picks and solid in coverage all day. Maybe the Falcons have stuck with him because they know something the rest of us don’t. Great defense today and kudos to Van Gorder for an active and aggressive secondary all day. As for the offense, you could see the rust on Ryan being out the last couple of games, but he got it done in the end. Good adjustments by Mularkey in the fourth quarter and great job on that last drive. But, please shut Turner down for the rest of the year – he’s come back twice and re-injured the ankle almost immediately twice. Let him heal and come back healthy for next season. He’s too valuable to mess up permanently for these last two meaningless games.

Bewildered – well put, my man! I thought the Falcons would roll over the jets at the start of the game, but it became evident the Jets outplayed the Falcons most of the game. Without the 3 missed FGs and the picks, we wouldn’t have had the chance to steal it in the end. Great game and mental – they never thought they’d lose and never gave up. I love that!

I care where he’s looking, because we won’t win against good teams if he continues to do that. He’s the starting QB, gets all the reps ever since training camp, so a little rest shouldn’t make his “game” just disappear.
But they got it done. I said it at the start of the game, too (time for a defensive gem, is what I said). I don’t have to avoid ESPN all week long, and we still have a shot to overcome the curse. I’m ecstatic about that, but I’ve been a Falcons fan for 38 years so I’ve earned the right to call it like I see it.
Guess I’ll go listen to the 790 crew gloss over how bad the offense (especially Mr. Ice) played today.

Real American,
I hope McNabb and the #2 guy both get hurt tonight so all you Vick idiots can see what your guy really is. If he suddenly becomes the guy in Philly, that team will crash in record speed. I’ll give you that he had some success in the last two games, but he is not capable of being the guy on every play. I hope he gets a starting gig next year. We will allbe able to see that h i not a NFL quarterback.

You’re a real winner, you clown. You’re not even American (in my book). I thought MV would come back from his punishment a changed man. But, he’s doing the same things he’s always done… Look and act humble, but laughs under his breathe at everything he hates. The team played with heart against a great D (seriously, if Sanchez was not an interception machine and they had a better kicker, I’d be very scared of the Jets if I were in the AFC East!). I love that Smitty, Gonzo and the others are trying to break the curse. Ryan played OK back from injury. We’ve never been able to get into an offensive rhythm due to injuries. T-Town Dawg: Okay, I’ll make this quick because I’m really not into the Ryan vs Vick comparison politics. Vick led the Falcons to a fourth quarter comeback win against the Panthers during the FIRST month of his FIRST season. Trust me, between ‘01 & his PRO BOWL ‘06 season, there were TONS of 4th quarter touchdown throws & comebacks. I could be all day laying out examples, but I don’t care to waste my time responding to statements rooted in ignorance. Learning your Falcons’ history before you make such statements. I’m telling you all, this is a winner coming together. Just be patient. I know, it’s hard to do with the 40+ years of mediocrity. But this is different. And, at the risk of rebuttal, I’ll say, “If you can’t see this team winning playoff games consistently, you’re not looking at the big picture.” It’s a process. Mr. Charlie: So you choose ‘06 as your season for comparison? I’m assuming you don’t want to talk about the ‘03 & ‘05 seasons. Yes, Vick had no 4th-quarter TD’s during the ‘06 season. Yes, Ryan now has 5 4th-quarter TD’s on the season, but how’s this for a stat…
Of Ryan’s career 4th quarter TD’s, 44% were in games the Falcons actually won. Of Vick’s career 4th quarter TD’s, 46% were in games the Falcons actually won.
To be more specific, of Vick’s 46%, 3 of those 4th-quarter TD’s actually gave the Falcons the lead. Today was Ryan’s FIRST.
My point? Numbers can be quoted to reflect any opinion. As a Falcons fan, I’m hoping Ryan has many more. How about you use “4 qtr TD” passing stats when/if Ryan reaches 3? On with your bias.

Again I ask the logical question…why does every Falcons’ article in the AJC have to end up with people going back and forth about Vick????
I’m all for free of speech but the discussions should be related to the article which today is about the Falcons-Jets game in New York. Nothing about the game has anything AT ALL to do with Vick and whether or not he was on a team that made the playoffs. Some of the comments imply that Vick made the playoffs as the QB and won a playoff game. The last time I looked, there are always 11 players on the field representing each team so no ONE individual wins anything…it’s a team sport…GET REAL!!!!

I chose Vicks 2006 season, because it was his most current. It was what he became, what he developed into. Pretty pathetic when you consider he was suppose to be the “new breed of super-quarter back” when he started out.
That is what happens when you have all the talent in the world, but smoke blounts, don’t study, let some silly distraction like fighting dogs interfear with your destiny to be the best QB to ever play the game.

Vick fans… how many winning seasons did the Falcons have with him at QB? What was the Falcons’ overall record with him at QB?
Only two winning seasons in five? Yikes; only 38-28-1 in that span? Not exactly “Joe Montana-like,” eh?
And before you go pointing to injuries, incarceration, etc., remember, you’ll have to allow for the “injury excuse” for every OTHER QB as well if you’re going to tug on that towel. No NEED to worry about Matt Ryan missing time due to a FELONY, that’s for damn sure.
Get real, chumps; Vick’s not responsible for any of the Eagles’ wins. He’s a sideshow, and he only draws a few more morons to the gates than they did before. They already have an in-stadium courtroom and jail in Philadelphia, so they’re set for handling any rampant crime waves that strike the Linc, should Vick decide to take out any innocent animals or sneak any herb through security. That’s why the Eagles were the best team for him to (rarely) play for.
I know this much: Matt Ryan threw less INTs in his rookie year than the conVICKt threw in his 3rd, 4th and 5th seasons. One QB has a full, upward career ahead of him, and another is a circus sideshow act.
I’ll take my chances with #2.

A 4th quarter is when game in the NFL are won, the 2006 Falcons went 7-9 without a 4th Quarter TD pass. My point is, if we had a QB who did not choke like a little ***th in the 4th quarter and not throw ONE SINGLE TD PASS, maybe it would not be up to ICE ICE BABY to be the first QB to have back to back winning seasons.

Are you saying all 4th qtr TD’s are equal whether they’re in the midst of a blowout or with the game on the line? You can’t be serious. I’ll take 1st, 2nd, & 3rd quarter TD’s that lead to a win over 4th quarter TD’s that end in a loss all day. 4th quarter COMEBACKS are what separates “real QB’s from the wannabees.” 3 for Vick, 1 for Ryan.

Choke, my point exactly…Falcons are not going to the playoffs, just like in 2005 and 2006. Vick could not win then either. To Vick supporters,
I can’t understand this continued support for Vick. He let the Falcons down by funding and participating in a dog fighting operation. Also, he lied to his boss repeatedly. I was a big Vick fan when he was first here. He was exciting to watch. He let the entire city down with his actions. The falcon could not put the future on hold waiting for him to get out of prison or have any rookie QB have the uncertainty of Vick as the back-up.
We don’t know yet if Ryan is going to be good quarterback, it is way too early to tell. As for the turf toe injury, given what other NFL players have said about the injury, I don’t blame Ryan for not playing. You want Ryan to be a failure, without ever giving the guy a chance.

Anybody who “blames” the Falcons for not “turning their back” on MV7 while he was in prison should – I don’t know – maybe consider that he’d turned his back on them with his off-field behavior to begin with.

I’m saying that if I’m a taxpaying citizen & I run into a rough stretch of life, there’s no reason I shouldn’t be able to get a little of my tax dollars back in the form of health insurance. As for those that legitimately need food stamps, I see nothing wrong with that. Notice, I said legitimately. Getting an education & working is obviously important, but that doesn’t make you immune to hard times. It better equips you to survive them, but doesn’t make you immune. Taxpaying citizens should be entitled to a little help from the same government that’s had it’s hand in their pockets when they need it…and I’m not just talking about in the form of Medicare when they’re sixty-something.

People Stop It!! Why are so many people obsessed with the Vick vs Ryan?
I just don’t get this newspaper.
‘m a Wisconsin transplant living in Duluth and graduate of BC. I have followed Ryan for years. Yes, I’m a Matt Ryan fan. I truly admire and respect Ryan. . He’s very down-to-earth and smart. Ryan gets it! He understands that in order for him to be the next Manning/Favre/Brees he has to continue to develop his game; consequently, that was Vicks’ downfall in Atlana.
With that being said- This argument was over 3 weeks ago when Vick came to the Dome and shredded the Falcons in their own back yard ,while Ryan was on the sideline nursing his toe injury. (BTW- Its been widely speculated by fans across the league if Ryan punk’d out or not ) Its a wrap!!!…this conversation should be dead.
My point- stop with the Ryan “greatest QB ever in Atlanta” and “Ryan is better than Vick” crap. No one is buying it. You’re only being laughed at by those who know the History of the NFL and know a little something about the Falcons and guy a name Steve. Bartkowski. And while Ryan has been scorned by many on this board, he might still end up gettin the last laugh after all.
Ryan will have a chance to shut his critics up next year, there’s no guarantee for Vick. But for now, Ryan has a lot prove in 2010 or he won’t stand a chance in Atlanta.

ANY QB that is in a playoff race is there because of the team’s play. NO…and I repeat NO QB would be in the playoffs if he wasn’t playing on a winning team. With some of these earlier comments you’d have thought that the QB was out there alone playing against 11 other players. So…to say that Vick or any other QB is in the playoffs is disregarding and ignoring the fact that football is and always will be a TEAM SPORT.
NEWSFLASH:…THE TEAM IS IN THE PLAYOFFS and if the team wins….then the TEAM WINS A PLAYOFF GAME not the QB. Is that concept so difficult to comprehend????
