Are SEC rivals turning Tennessee, Kiffin in to NCAA?

Here's Lane Kiffin doing interviews Thursday. This seldom turns out well.

Here's Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin doing interviews Thursday. This seldom turns out well.

Sitting on stage, unaccompanied by blonde recruiting hostesses (good news) but still clearly devoid of a filter between his brain and mouth (oops), Lane Kiffin listened as somebody asked what he considered the toughest thing about coaching college football today.

“Following all the rules,” he said. And the room, free of NCAA investigators, broke into laughter.

I’ll say this for Kiffin: Most folks who devolve into a human punch line every 17 minutes eventually learn their lesson and know when to hit the mental mute button. Kiffin soaks it all in and wears the target proudly, like a new tan. There’s something to be said for consistency.

“I thought you guys were getting bored out there,” he said later about the rules comment. “We were answering every question politically correct, so I thought I’d give you something.”

Kiffin coaches Tennessee, at least when he’s not setting the campus on fire. The Volunteers are under NCAA investigation for recruiting violations, the most salacious of which is sending bubbly coeds off campus to high school football games to help lure hormone-raging teenage football players. There’s also all of that other stuff he has said or done since taking the job, from the occasional tweak, to accusing Florida coach Urban Meyer of cheating, to seeing three of his prize recruits arrested for armed robbery.

The good news? He’s not a schlep like Phil Fulmer, so nobody can make fat jokes.

Kiffin was in town Thursday for a news conference to help promote the Chick-fil-A Bowl game. I think Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer also was there. But Beamer’s 228 career wins just didn’t compare to Kiffin’s seven really loud and obnoxious ones. So the spotlight followed Kiffin.

Tennessee has been accused of sending female members of the school's "Orange Pride" off-campus to help recruit.

Tennessee has been accused of sending female members of the school's "Orange Pride" off-campus to help recruit.

He did not torch any particular SEC program (or rule) while in town, although he did remark to Beamer about Georgia’s failed pursuit of Hokies defensive coordinator Bud Foster, “We’re very glad he’s not going to Georgia.”

But he remarked on the probability that he has made coaching enemies in the conference and that, as fallout, other schools might be turning him into the NCAA.

“I think any time you do something [high profile], there’s going to be good and bad to it,” he said. “The approach we took, the good thing was it gave recognition [of Tennessee] to recruits. But I’m sure some of that stuff has made people more apt to try to find things we’re doing wrong and turn us in.”

But he has no direct knowledge of this.

“When you’re turned in, they don’t tell you what school did it,” he said.

For the record, he again denied any wrongdoing. He also said recent remarks that he viewed the NCAA investigation as a “compliment,” were taken out of context. “The context of the question was about what was going on in recruiting and do you feel like you have a target on your back,” he said. “We’re operating at such a high level, I said I take that as a compliment if people are coming after us and they’re [saying], ‘They’re doing something wrong.’ People come after you when you’re on top.”

Two things. First, the Vols are 7-5. They’re not quite on top. Second, Kiffin’s explanation for his frequent bombastic comments and actions – that it’s all orchestrated to the raise the profile of the Tennessee program – isn’t completely believable. Some of that might be true. But it’s also true that he’s a cocky guy who loves the attention but has been somewhat blindsided by the SEC’s lunatic following.

If Kiffin were a head coach in the Pacific 10, everything he said in Scottsdale, Ariz., wouldn’t detonate in Eugene, Ore. In the SEC,  it’s like a wet finger in an electric socket.

But maybe he is learning just a little. When I mentioned to him I was surprised he didn’t bring any hostesses with him, Kiffin smiled and said, “Come on. I already gave you one line.”

Ol’ Jeff . . . looking for the hostesses. :-) We was always having pretty hostesses come up to us when we was playing ball but we was also afraid of Coach so we was never getting into any trouble with them. We found that most of the hostesses was just girls from schools around us and not a one of them didn’t like Dairy Queen. Do you remember those little plastic spoons with the Dairy Queen ice cream cone on the end of the spoon? Those suckers was sharp! We was always sticking ‘em in people when we was in school.

Nice post, Jeff. Interesting how the only thing readers want are issues related to Kiffin, not his players or incoming recruits. While it’s true head coaches make some headlines, a player like Eric Berry deserves some ink, along with UT QB Crompton, who turned a miserable career into something worthwhile during the second half of the season.

I’m obviously not a UT fan, and I really tired for the whole Kiffin soap opera. Like I’ve written before, Kiffin has taken the game down to the level of professional wrestling. This is, after all, college football we follow.

If Kiffin wins he will be tolerated at UT. Most SEC schools would sell their souls for 10 wins. Pee Wee Herman could be the coach at UT, if he’s recruiting well (no matter how obnoxious) and they’re winning, Tenneesee fans will embrace satan himself. We was never much good at trivia but we was always playing ball. When we was running down the field being chased by half of Cobb County, we’d just put it in another gear and pull away from ‘em until we got to the end zone and then we’d just toss the ball to the referee and nod over to Coach on the sidelines and jog back to the sideline. We was taught that was how to do it. Today, they is a lot of carrying on after a big run or a big catch or even after a tackle. If we did that, Coach would have us for sure.

Bad news for UT fans. Your walking joke of a coach thinks 7-5 is “on top”. Someone needs to explain to this “gentleman” that there are much higher mountains to climb in the SEC than tied for 4th in the league. Ignorance is one thing, arrogant ignorance is quite another. In exchange for helping the ncaa dig up dirt on Bama,(some of it fabricated by the ncaa investigator as proven later in court documents) phat phil and the viles escaped the ncaa cops when they were trying to do the very same thing. Karma is a beyotch and what goes around comes around. And its gonna come around on UT big time.

Also, I hear Tee Martin is a little short on money this month. Tee Martin can just have one of the UT boosters wire him some more money. Apparently its okay if a self ascribed big UT fan wires him cash for no other reason than the fact that he was a UT football player. They got away with cheating long enough. Yup. I remember the 1998 Tennessee national title team. The professors gave 22 players passing grades to keep them eligible for the bowl game. Then after the bowl game the professors went back and changed their grades to failing grades. The NCAA looked into what is and should be obvious cheating by UT. We know cheating when we see it. But the ncaa said that although it looked bad they did not have the authority to go into classrooms and tell professors what grades they should be giving students and whether or not they should or shouldn’t change some grades.

That’s alright though. The rest of us know cheating when we see it. And UT is UcheaT university.

This program has no morals or standards whatsoever from enrolling people like Jason respert to the kid that participated in a rape of a cousin when he was 14 to whoring out their hostesses. This program makes me wanna puke.

Good luck beating both Bama and florida after losing your starting qb, tailback, top receiver, top tight end, losing 4 of 5 starting o lineman, losing dan williams, wes brown, rico mccoy, eric berry.

The reality is that you guys will actually go backwards. I’m forecasting 6 wins for UT in 2010 with blowout losses to both Bama and UF. Its funny that you don’t even know that you lose the core of your team this year. You guys are gonna be really, really bad next year. 6 wins max. BOOK IT!!!!!

I’m not gonna lie. As a graduate of the University, I’m embarrassed by Coach Kiffin. He’s a complete disgrace when he is compared to the other coach’s of the SEC. He felt like he had to come in and pick fights, but no other coach in the league has to do that to gain respect. Our University has a proud football tradition without all this so-called “needed” media attention.

Phil Fulmer had a few bad years in the 2000s as the head coach, but he also had some great ones, including a near SEC championship win over LSU in 2007. What eventually sunk him was the fact that he lost Cutcliffe in 1 year and hired Dave Clawson, who was not ready to bring his spread to the SEC. If you look at it, UT’s defense was WORSE last year than it was under Phil’s last season with Chavis and they did not graduate too many seniors on that side of the ball. The offense was better not because of Kiffin but because the players who were at UT were recruited to run a pro-style offense like they did under Cutcliffe . . . and the offense was not better than Cutcliffe’s.

Im telling you, as an alumnus, with all of the clout he is raising as well as how much money they are spending, if he has not won a SEC championship in the next 3 years, he needs to be gone.

Reality check. 6-6 next year for UT. Domination by a coach who once lined up his team the raiders to attempt a 75 yard field goal? What fool in the history of organized football would line up to attempt a 75 yard field goal? You think Saban or Meyer fears an idiot like that? You’ve got to be kidding me?

Good luck replacing your top 2 qbs, 4 out of 5 starting o lineman, your tb, top wr, top tight end, top 2 d-lineman, top linebacker, and eric berry. Saban went 12-0 in his 2nd year and finished 12-2. Meyer won a national title in his 2nd year. Think UT will go 12-0 regular season or win a national title next year? Um, uhhh, that would be NO! 6-6 most likely and 7-5 if some breaks fall their way. 5-7 is also a possibility. Come back to reality folks. Because it will be settling in soon on you in another 9 months.

TnJack,

You need to check the recruiting rankings son. As of now Bama has the top class but it can be argued that Florida has a better class. Georgia will also always get better talent than UT. So will LSU. UT is a very thin state as far as talent goes. Everyone knows that and its why UT has to get all the leftovers in the surrounding states. They’ll have decent recruiting classes but still will not be on the level of the other programs mentioned above. It is what it is. Deal with it.

If conference rivals aren’t hating on you, you’re not doing your job. If sports writers aren’t acting desperate to hold on to their lazy narrative about you, then you know you’re doing something right. Seriously people do you really think we’re worried that fans of SEC schools say about Lane Kiffin? We LOVE Lane Kiffin. We love that he gets under the skin of Urban Meyer, we love that he brings great players to UT, we love that he attracts NFL coaches to campus, we love that he skull drugged Coach Jesus 45-19, we love that instead of a 20 pt loss to Bama at home, we came within a gimpy legged kicker of beating them at their place, and we love that all you can do is predict doom for us next season cause we’re losin all that TALENT. You can’t shame us into not liking Kiffin, because we know that with the exception of Saban at Alabama, we’ve got the best coach in the league.

He will give the rest of the sec lots of things to laugh about for the next year or 2. Personally I’m looking forward to it. You can at least be happy that he serves a worthwhile cause in that he provides the entire conference with comedic relief. Oh, I almost forgot to mention. After the Florida game Saban said in the postgame conference “We didn’t come here looking for a moral victory”. Ouch! Guess who Saban was alluding to?

I seen this guy PaulaC’s posts before. Not a very bright guy. But this time he takes the cake when he says that except for Saban UT fans know they got the best coach in the sec. Really? Upon what does the brilliant PaulC base that upon. Is it based upon Lane Pimpin’s 5-25 record or something like that with the raiders? It was so bad I can’t even remember how bad his record was. Or is it based upon that incredible 7-5 record with a UT team that had a great senior class to begin with? Inquiring minds want to know what great coaching resume lane pimpin has that has some idiot saying he’s the 2nd best coach in the sec. Inquiring minds are waiting?

I’m just having fun with you guys because to me its just funny to see people that should be thoroughly embarrassed but yet they keep talking bout how great the guy is. To me its fascinating. Its like Obama fans. The higher unemployment goes the more they talk about what a great job he’s doing. Its nothing for anybody to be upset about whether you’re talking Obama or Kiffin. Its more just fascination to see just how stupid people really are. It truly is. Its like most people at every other program would be embarrassed and humiliated if their coach was as idiotic as Kiffin is but you guys just drink the koolaid and can’t see just how much this guy is embarrassing you. Its something to be behold. Its like when everybody is laughing at a guy and the guy is so stupid that he thinks everybody is laughing with him when in reality they’re laughing at him. Same with what we see in Vol fans. Its good comedy though so keep it up. LOL!!!!!!

He is far more respected than Kiffin. You ought to be smart enough to acknowledge that.Mind you. I aint saying you’re smart. I’m just saying that you cannot possibly be so freaking stupid as to possibly believe that Kiffin has the same respect nationwide as Richt. Lane Kiffin came into the SEC running his mouth like an immature brat and making all kind of false accusations. He has earned the rile of his fellow coaches and caused the NCAA to put a target upon him. It is Kiffin’s own fault. If he’d shown some class and kept his mouth shut this would not be happening to him.

But face it, his predecessor (Phil Fumer) was the snitch that could cheat all he wanted because he turned everyone else in to the NCAA. As it was Fulmer and his Vol organization was probably the dirtiest in the entire nation. Heck, even the QB from Fulmer’s one and only national championship team admitted on national television that he’d been paid several thousand dollars in cash to play football at Tennessee. Conveniently, the statute of limitations had passed so UT of course could not be punished.

And you numbnuts keep proving him right. Everyday in the AJC and other national newspapers, Kiffin is front and center. You cannot buy that kind of publicity. And don’t give me the crap about armed robbery, hostess-gate, recruiting violations, etc. Well aware of all that. The thugs involved with the robbery attempt have been kicked off the team and out of school. The “hostess-gate” is a bunch of BS and you all know it. Its shameful you all call these young ladies “ho’s”. You don’t know them and I bet you would not say that to their father’s faces. You would get your teeth kicked in most likely. So worry about the sorryass team you have over in Athens. I heard on the radio this morning that tickets are still available for Shreveport….wow what a SHOCKER. Nice Research. When he is talking about operating at a “High Level”, he is specifically referring to recruiting, not the team success you reference with the 7-5 comment. And with a Top 10 class last season that he pulled out of nothing, and a current class that could end up in the Top 5, Id say that “top level” is pretty accurate. Especially when you consider that UT is 12-12 over the last 2 seasons.

It’s understandable that you folks are happy about having a winning season, but don’t drink all of the kool aid just yet. It’s a long way down from that high of 7-5. Just to clarify, there is no SEC fan “afraid” of UT. Anyone who has paid attention to SEC football over the last few years understands that everyone can lose… well maybe not UA, but that’s a different story this year. I know you guys can’t begin to think of what life would be like if you (gasp) lost to UGA next year, but just remember that all of this stuff you’ve been saying will come back. There’s a lot of less than classy UGA fans that can dish it out just as well. Just ask the gt crowd.

Fast and loose with players…

UT does not lose their top WR (Gerald Jones and Denarius Moore both back), their top two QBs (Crompton is gone but Stephens is back), their top tight end (Luke Stocker, back) or their top 2 defensive linemen (Dan Williams is gone but Chris Walker is back).

That’s a lot of wrong for somebody who is accusing UT fans of not knowing what they are losing. Maybe you should do better research.

We are losing some players, for sure, but we also saw players get better as the year went on. That’s something that rarely happened under the old regime.

The amount of time all you Tennessee haters are spending on this just shows that no matter what comes out of your mouth, Tennessee is on your mind.

Academically UGA and UF are the top two schools in the SEC. UGA is in a state with some of the best HS football in the country. The university’s fan base is growing nationwide due, in large part, to the transient nature of the city of Atlanta.

Why is it that you Rocky Toppers feel the need to think that UGA fans fear UT. Is this something that hillbillies have in their nature?

Kiffin may say things he shouldn’t at times, but the truth is that he has more head-coaching ability than Richt and Spurrier (at this point in Spurrier’s carrier). It has been clear in the way Kiffin has assembled his coaching staff, the way he has recruited such talented players, in his playcalling, and in his quarterback coaching. The coaches on his staff have coached in great programs around the country, and they agree that he is going to be great. We outcoached Bama and FL. We lost on ability at kicker and qb in those games. It’s amazing how close we played those teams with the unbelievable lack of depth that Fulmer left. Meyer and Saban will always be difficult to beat b/c they are two of the smartest coaches ever to coach. But Richt isn’t. Kiffin will beat UGA repeatedly until UGA hires a different headcoach.

Volhala

December 20th, 2009
11:25 am

Also, Kiffin works harder and prepares harder than most headcoaches in college football today. And he picks assistants based in part on their reputation for work ethic and the hours they’re willing to put into the program as well as ability. One of the reasons that Gran left is b/c of the time commitment under Kiffin. Ask any player at UT, and he’ll tell you that the coaches arrive before dawn and leave sometime close to midnight. (And Monte and Coach O are rumored to sleep in their offices.) Many coaches in college football put in crazy hours, but this staff seems to never take a break or lose focus during all of those hours.

Volhala

December 20th, 2009
11:34 am

If Kiffin is the idiot that Schultz and others claim, why would great assistant coaches want to play for him? And why do the UT players and recruits talk so highly of him? People in Knoxville who know him and work around him are sold on his ability and work ethic. We have no concern over UGA beating us as long as the status quo remains there.

Kiffin will bring UT up to Bama’s level within four years. Then we’ll beat Bama based on our edge in quartback play. Kiffin can take a decent qb and, given enough time, make him look great. No coach in the SEC East can coach a qb as well as Kiffin.

Kiffin coached his team “up” to a 7-5 year and is on the verge of having the Vols on probation in year one. Is that a great first year for a coach? No. And on top of that, he has drawn attention to his illegal recruiting and seems to boast in it. He has slammed other coaches and made a fool of himself. Further, he is running an escort service and dragging coeds in to this mess. Is that something UT is proud of??? If so, then it is true: you can’t spell slut without UT.

Volhala

December 20th, 2009
3:50 pm

Kiffin had very little to work with in terms of depth of talent when he arrived. He turned around Crompton and hid several huge deficiencies, especially in the offensive line. Monte used Berry and Jackson to cover many holes on D. To accomplish a 7-5 season w/what Fulmer left was an accomplishment. It’s more of an embarrassment to opposing coaches that they were unable to find and exploit our weakness (numerous walk-ons and injuries).

The Vols are not on the verge of probation. The allegation that coaches sent the Orange Pride members to SC is ridiculous. Anyone who continues to make this claim is going to be embarrassed this week when the investigation is concluded.

UT fans are excited to see how the staff coaches the kids and to see Kiffin’s expectations and installs each week. Richt and Spurrier won’t be able to compete; the game is changing too quickly. SC and UGA won’t be able to compete unless they get new coaches.

Georgia h.s. talent is about to get raided. Richt can’t even hire a decent defensive coordinator. Initially, his picks were rejecting his offers so now he’s backed off and claiming that he’ll take his time to get it right. He’s taking his time so that he can find someone who’ll accept and won’t embarass his program further by rejecting the offer. No one great wants to coach under Richt after this last season. UT’s assistants have opportunities to move up in responsibility and earn more money when they leave; UGA is not anywhere close to be able to provide that outlook to coaches right now b/c UGA unperformed so badly.

Spurrier just can’t keep up. Kiffin will raid SC’s limited amount of talent even more than GA; it’ll be easier in SC. When I saw Spurrier and the SC qb coach screaming at Garcia during the Bama game, I knew that UT would destroy SC. Compare Spurrier and Kiffin’s performance at the UT v Sc game.

It isn’t embarrassing to be a target, especially when the truth will come out next week. It’s embarrassing for a “well respected” coach to lose on the field and in the recruiting battle to first year college head coach with no prospects of a different result next year or the year after. UGA and SC are going to be embarrassed frequently until they make significant changes.

Volhala

December 20th, 2009
3:59 pm

boots,

Kiffin coached up to a 7-5 record b/c he hid from Richt and other coaches huge weaknesses in depth of talent, especially in the O-line. It’s more embarrassing that opposing coaches were unable to find and exploit those weaknesses. Kiffin performed much better than he was given credit for at the start of the season. Richt underperformed.

UT isn’t going to be on probation. The coaches didn’t tell those girls to go to SC. Those players committed a long time ago.

We heard the slut joke the first time. There’s no need to repeat yourself; funny.

UGA and SC are going to lose their 5-stars over the next few years to UT, Bama, and FL. Until Richt and staff are let go, UGA won’t be able to compete again. With UT’s recruiting and coaching, UT will win an SEC Championship by 2012 and get close in 2011.

My UGA bretheren, there’s no rationalizing with some (most) of these Vowels. There must be something in that orange kool aid that they drink that affects their thinking. Anyone who can compare Lane Kiffin to Mark Richt, much less Steve Spurrier, is slap off their gourd.

Take a little time and read the bios and you’ll find that Kiffin has exactly one year of NCAA headcoaching experience. He was 7-5, 4-4 in that season. Compare this to Spurrier’s UF inaugural 9-2, 6-1, Followed by 10-2, 7-0 and Richt’s UGA inaugural 8-4, 5-3 (Hobnail Boot) Followed by 13-1, 8-1. When/if Kiffin does similar, we’ll talk. Until then, why don’t you Vowels stopping embarassing yourselves by making foolish comments like the afore-mentioned one. Don’t you ever wonder why the rest of the country makes fun of you? It is pretty funny to watch one group of southern uneducated rednecks wearing red make fun of another group of rednecks wearing orange, who in turn make fun of the rednecks with an A on their caps, who in turn make fun of the rednecks wearing blue and orange.

You are all the same.

But by the way, didn’t the rednecks in Orange play the rednecks in Red this year?

Hey Jeff,

Either you or Tony Barndawg better write another Herschel retrospective in a hurry. Your base is suicidal.

We at Bama would love the chance to rat Tn out. Please provide details so we can do our duty.
No seriously, I think Kiffin will screw himself. Just give jr time. He is like the ultimate punk in that he runs his mouth in safe confines. Then, the next day he says was misinterpreted. You will never see him run his mouth outside of Tn. His daddy has the nerve to say he really isn’t like that. Damn daddy, he is a grown man right?
