Mark Richt still hasn't made the call on Georgia's next defensive coordinator.
There goes another one.
We may never know how high Kansas State’s Vic Koenning ranked on Mark Richt’s list of potential Georgia next defensive coordinators. But he’s off the board. Koenning, who was Clemson’s defensive coordinator under Tommy Bowden (a friend of Richt’s) apparently is on the verge of being named the coordinator at Illinois, according to ESPN.com.
The hiring would cap an impressive week for Illinois coach Ron Zook. He just hired Arkansas’s Paul Petrino as the Illini’s new offensive coordinator. Paul Petrino is Bobby Petrino’s brother, but don’t hold that against him. The Falcons were impressed with him when he coached the team’s wide receivers.
Illustrating how the market has skyrocketed for college coordinators, Petrino will make $475,000 a year, and Koenning figures to be in that neighborhood.
Back to Georgia. I’m heading out to Athens this morning for Richt’s first pre-Independence Bowl media conference. I fully expect him to reveal absolutely nothing about his hiring plans. But we already know that quite a few names have dropped off the list:
♦ Kirby Smart (Alabama) likely will remain on Nick Saban’s staff, possibly for a raise. But he has said nothing since seemingly leaving the door open a crack when asked about the Georgia job, saying he’s “not looking to go anywhere.” Some fans have taken that crack as a sign that the former Bulldog is coming back to Athens.
♦ Bud Foster (Virginia Tech): He got a raise to remain in Blacksburg.
♦ Ellis Johnson (South Carolina): He hasn’t been quoted about the Georgia job but most expect him to stay on Steve Spurrier’s staff.
♦ Bob Sanders (Buffalo Bills): He joined the Bills this season as defensive line coach after four years in Green Bay. But he spent 22 years coaching college, including 11 at Florida (most as line coach). For the record, if Richt wants to interview Sanders, he won’t have to pay travel costs. Buffalo visits the Falcons in two weeks.
♦ Sal Sunseri: (Alabama): He’s in his first season as Tide’s linebackers coach after seven seasons with the Carolina Panthers. He appeared to have the inside track to the Florida State job, but he lost out to Arizona’s Mark Stoops.
♦
Here’s one more thing for your college football fix this morning. Pre-season 2010 rankings!
NationalChamps.net has decided to beat everybody to the punch and come out with its top 25. I know. It’s kind of ridiculous having a pre-season top 25 now when we don’t know which juniors are leaving for the NFL. But according to National Champs, Georgia Tech is the pre-season No. 8 ranked team and Georgia is No. 23.
♦ The top 10: Alabama, Boise State, Oregon, Florida, Ohio State, TCU, Texas, Georgia Tech, Iowa, Miami.
♦ Nos. 11-25: Penn State, Nebraska, USC, Cincinnati, North Carolina, Oklahoma. Oregon State, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Houston, LSU, Wisconsin, Georgia, Arkansas, Missouri.
You may now commence with your debate.
I’ll check back later, before Richt’s press conference.

It most certainly will be a no name coach. Paying up and hiring proven winners is not the UGA way.

Hey Mark Summy, I guess the BCS didn’t get the memo that UGA is better than Tech??!?!? Neither did the AP, the ESPN Poll, or the All American Team voters?!?!
Now go grab your toothless wife and your half-sister girlfriend, get in your Camaro IROC-Z and grab a seat at the counter at the Huddle House in Shreveport. T-bone steaks are still available…

Smart to Georgia… NO Seriously!
I’ve gotten word from a VERY credible source that Kirby Smart is very intrested in the job and there is more than a good chance that he could end up in Athens. A friend of mine who is a High School coach and former player of the 2000 Valdosta State football team in which Will Muschamp coached defense, said that after mingling with Muschamp and Smart at the Georgia State Championships this weekend at the Georgia Dome, Smart said he was interested in the possibilities of coaching in his home state. And get this Dawg fans, it is a better chance of him coming if Bama wins the NC. It would give him even more leverage when it comes to salary negotiations. He also said that he and Saban have had talks about the posibility of UGA coming after him and plan to match whatever offer UGA throws his way. It was also said that from this source that Smart said Saban although a great coach, is a work-a-holic and he didn’t have as much time with his family as he would like. This bodes well for Richt and his more family orientated coaching style. To draw my conclusion from this exchange, is that Bama is gonna try and match whatever UGA does, but in the end it’s gonna come down to where Smart wants to be, and from this info UGA could have their next DC. He also said discussions wouldn’t really start til after the title game.

GT Joe- wow is all i can say. and we all wonder why nobody shows respect to GT fans- you pretty much sum it up. congrats on this year as your basis for GT football as a whole. UGA has one bad year in comparison to how many years of mediocre years by GT. your pole #s make no sense on this year. so so sad.

“I believe Smart should take the UGA job for several reasons.
1. It’s his alma mater and their is an allegiance there.
2. As Alabama’s DC, his credit is marginalized because people assume Alabama’s great defenses are due to Saaban. If he comes to UGA and resurrects the defense with an offensive minded HC, then that gives him tremendous credibility for a head coaching job soon.
3. Saban is a diffcult person to work for (and that’s putting it mildly).”
1. How do you know where Kirby’s allegiance is? It could be very well be to CNS. He hired Kirby early on, and re-hired him at Miami after his first (unhappy) gig as RB coach in Athens.
2. I could have seen where youre coming from on this point 3 weeks ago. However, Kirby just won the Broyle’s award two weeks ago, which goes to the nation’s top assistant coach. I have a hard time believing that his role in Bama’s defense is marginalized any more.
3. Kirby has worked on Saban’s staff for 6 or 7 years now. If working for CNS was that difficult, don’t you think he would have been gone years ago?

GT Joe…we beat your ass this year…and that hurts more than the BCS bowl game that 1) you’ll lose and 2) show up with 5,000-8,000 fans who once again will go home with tears in their eyes and their ASSES in their hands…could ever heal.

Chris I would like to defend you. You bring up some solid points and most don’t want to admit the truth on this board at times. Strong should have been a HC much sooner than now but thankfully he can prove himself now. I don’t like FLA but admit he is a great coach who has proved himself over and over.
I for one am hoping that “Get Smart” is a “Mission Impossible” Go DAWGS!

So many say that Richt already has his man for DC, but no one can tell us his name…interesting. Richt isn’t going to hire any “big name” DC because he can’t afford to hire a potential successor given the current state of discontent at UGA. Nobody (especially dawgs after 2008) puts much stock in preseason rankings…especially those that come out in December…but if Tech loses only Morgan and Dwyer to the NFL another Top 10 finish is not out of the question. Likewise, UGA will be lucky to re-enter the Top 25 in an obvious rebuilding year. As for calling the Yellow Jackets “maggots,” I would suggest that the only maggots around these parts are feeding on dead dog corpses.

Oh man, I admit it, seriously, even though we beat Tech, come on guys, we could’ve easily been manhandled by them. If their quarterback didnt get hurt in the first half, we would’ve gotten our buttts handed to us. Hope we get a great new DC and a quarterback that can get it done, otherwise we might as well throw in the towel, cause we arent the powerhouse we use to be. Come on my fellow dawg fans, lets admit it, we got very lucky winning the game this year, but we got spanked by Florida like it was nobodys business, and then Kentucky, oh man, come on man, this is NOT fair, were better than that, but obviously not. I’ve become embarrassed to admit Im a UGA fan, I took my plate off the front of my car, and my wife wants to move to Florida, so either we shape up and start winning or there are gonna be alot of pizzed off redneck fans like me out there!

I am glad UGA is ranked where they are in this poll. I still don’t buy any of it though it is way too early. Jeff you sure are assuming a lot and you know what that means.
GT Joe- Who dropped that pass when you lost to UGA? AJ is one of the best receivers in the game b/c he puts up his numbers when he is double teamed. Bebe is never double teamed, and I doubt he would put up those numbers if he was. And if the UGA game was not that important why are you talking about us? If we are irrelevant then you should not mention us right? Oh and we might not sell out our bowl game but it looks like Tech has tickets left too. UGA never has to release there tickets to the public when they get into BCS bowl games. Just another thought.
GO DAWGS!!!!!!!
