Koenning off Georgia’s board (and 2010 rankings already?)

Mark Richt still hasn't made the call on a defensive coordinator.

Mark Richt still hasn't made the call on Georgia's next defensive coordinator.

There goes another one.

We may never know how high Kansas State’s Vic Koenning ranked on Mark Richt’s list of potential Georgia next defensive coordinators. But he’s off the board.  Koenning, who was Clemson’s defensive coordinator under Tommy Bowden (a friend of Richt’s) apparently is on the verge of being named the coordinator at Illinois, according to ESPN.com.

The hiring would cap an impressive week for Illinois coach Ron Zook. He just hired Arkansas’s Paul Petrino as the Illini’s new offensive coordinator. Paul Petrino is Bobby Petrino’s brother, but don’t hold that against him. The Falcons were impressed with him when he coached the team’s wide receivers.

Illustrating how the market has skyrocketed for college coordinators, Petrino will make $475,000 a year, and Koenning figures to be in that neighborhood.

Back to Georgia. I’m heading out to Athens this morning for Richt’s first pre-Independence Bowl media conference. I fully expect him to reveal absolutely nothing about his hiring plans. But we already know that quite a few names have dropped off the list:

♦ Kirby Smart (Alabama) likely will remain on Nick Saban’s staff, possibly for a raise. But he has said nothing since seemingly leaving the door open a crack when asked about the Georgia job, saying he’s “not looking to go anywhere.” Some fans have taken that crack as a sign that the former Bulldog is coming back to Athens.

♦ Bud Foster (Virginia Tech): He got a raise to remain in Blacksburg.

♦ Ellis Johnson (South Carolina): He hasn’t been quoted about the Georgia job but most expect him to stay on Steve Spurrier’s staff.

♦ Bob Sanders (Buffalo Bills):  He joined the Bills this season as defensive line coach  after four years in Green Bay. But he spent 22 years coaching college, including 11 at Florida (most as line coach). For the record, if Richt wants to interview Sanders, he won’t have to pay travel costs. Buffalo visits the Falcons in two weeks.

♦ Sal Sunseri: (Alabama): He’s in his first season as Tide’s linebackers coach after seven seasons with the Carolina Panthers. He appeared to have the inside track to the Florida State job, but he lost out to Arizona’s Mark Stoops.

Here’s one more thing for your college football fix this morning. Pre-season 2010 rankings!

NationalChamps.net has decided to beat everybody to the punch and come out with its top 25. I know. It’s kind of ridiculous having a pre-season top 25 now when we don’t know which juniors are leaving for the NFL. But according to National Champs, Georgia Tech is the pre-season No. 8 ranked team and Georgia is No. 23.

♦ The top 10: Alabama, Boise State, Oregon, Florida, Ohio State, TCU, Texas, Georgia Tech, Iowa, Miami.

♦ Nos. 11-25: Penn State, Nebraska, USC, Cincinnati, North Carolina, Oklahoma. Oregon State, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Houston, LSU, Wisconsin, Georgia, Arkansas, Missouri.

You may now commence with your debate.

I’ll check back later,  before Richt’s press conference.

It’s pretty obvious by now that few coaches want to (1) live in Athens and (2) coach the low class goons that UGA recruits.

Or play in exotic places like Shreveport. :-)

No way GT is a top 10 team next year unless they do a real serious overhaul on their defense and I truly believe Smart is thinking seriously about the Dawgs DC job

2010 rankings are moronic- this is all before spring/summer/and fall practices before the 1rst game is played. Especially the top 10 with so many seniors and possible juniors leaving. I’ll def agree on Bama & Miami up there

Pure wishful thinking to think that Kirby Smart will go to UGA. First of all, Kirby is too Smart to go (sorry). Second, Smart would only go to UGA as head coach. UGA would have to fire Richt first, and that won’t happen for another year, maybe two.

Start lowering your expectations. You’re not getting Smart or anyone else with his experience and talent.

Smart has already agreed to big pay raise at Alabama last Friday and will be there next year. Sunseri did not get FSU job because of buyout in his contract with Alabama. Ellis Johnson is not a candidate becasue he has a $500,000 buyout in his contract at South Carolina.

Belichick to Athens as ugag DC,……well not exactly. But that’s the kind of thinking coming from their delusional fans. Living in their own little world,…with a field trip to Shereveport thrown in for good measure. Here’s an early lump of coal for you,…Kirby Smart isn’t “coming home” as you so arrogantly like to suggest.

I really think Kirby will use the chance to jump from say 350,000 to 650,000 at Bama. If Saban Wins the NC, he’ll coach one more year at Bama then could end up at Michigan when they fire Rich after next year, and they will, at say 6-7 mil per year…….I don’t care what any Bama fan say’s, winning three national titles at three different schools appeals to Saban, along with getting wealthy. He loves the money and the limelight. All this to say Kirby wants to be a head coach, and with 5 to 7 good jobs opening up EVERY year, he’ll get his chance. Heck, they might hire him to replace Saban. I have no idea who Richt will hire, but I feel it will be an improvement.

THe fact that Richt is being so quiet about this and no one else is talking either, leads me to HOPE and lean toward the idea that he already has his man but he won’t announce any deals until after the bowls are over. Again – I hope that means its a Kirby Smart or someone who is currently coaching on defense for a very good team.
BTW, Jeff, how do you keep it together on the radio with Bell? That dude cracks me up….

didn’t FSU just hire one of the stoop brothers to coach their defense. the sunseri could still be a candidate. with some head coaching positions open this year and a few more opening next year, there’s no way tuberville is going to be our next defensive coordinator. Even if he does, he won’t be there more than two years anyway. Smart may be a possibility but I believe it’ll be someone we don’t really know. I’d like it to be either tuberville or smart but I don’t believe it’ll be those two. I’ll eat my words if I’m wrong though. Go Dawgs!

Hey Tech fans,
Are ya’ll going to have to give Iowa a large portion of your bowl tickets because your pathetic fan base won’t buy any Orange Bowl tickets. This is the best bowl you have been to in over 40 years and you still can’t sell your allotment of tickets. I feel sorry for the players on your team. They deserve better than that.

I agree…..with NO leaks or strong rumors, I think it’s also a done deal…. The only down side to Kirby is he is a hot commodity right now, and Richt knows he would only have him a year or two. He IS very young though, 33 i think?. I think it will be a surprise, and not Kirby. I think Saban would have confronted him, and it would not have been pretty and it would have leaked out of the Alabama athletic offices.
Saban would be OK if he was going as the Head coach, but pissed to leave for the Same job without talking to him first.

I would think any deal done with a presently unemployed coach would have already been announced. Why keep that secret? However, guys like Koenig could be taking other jobs after being told UGA has a deal in place with someone else or that the candidate in question is no longer being considered. I lean toward the latter. Relax guys. It’ll happen and when it does it will be very good news.

Papadawg, I’m a Tech fan but I do have to agree with you. We’re not finished with this year yet, and I don’t see Tech’s defense getting BETTER with some of the juniors leaving. Why don’t UGA and Richt “steal” Wommack away from Tech?

Atticus: Who was Kirby Smart two years ago? I believe he was one of the hottest young coaching talents around. Coached at LSU under Saban and then Saban thought enough of him to bring him to the Dolphins in the NFL.

He’s been a big name on the assistant coaching circuit for several years now. Pay attention.

Your the last one ought to be on this blog wondering about UGA’s defense.
After 349 yards rushing against the gnats you may wont to be thinking about your own.
301 yards to C. J. Spiller in 1 game.
We could keep Willie and be in better position than the bees. Dwyer 33 yards against Willie, Nesbitt 41 yards against Willie’s defense.

It is now very obvious that the assistant coaches across the county look at UGA as a second rate program. Made obvious by the fact that Richt can’t hire one as the DC. Having to coach against and recruit against BAMA, GATORS, VOLS, LSU and Auburn just will not appeal to any coach regardless of what the UGA fan base thinks. It’s time to face up to the facts and realize that trying to finish in front of the Gamecocks is what UGA is will be all about. Forget the SEC Championship, in the East the VOLS and GATORS will fight it out year after year.

Either Richt is shooting in the dark or he already has his man (IMO) since theres no legit rumors out there.
And I’m pretty sure we can stop with the childish insults to Tech fans….they know what they are. THey might have a brief one or two years (out of 10) where they finish ahead of the Dawgs, but eventually and overall, UGA will be better…GT’s just not a football school.

I believe Smart should take the UGA job for several reasons.
1. It’s his alma mater and their is an allegiance there.
2. As Alabama’s DC, his credit is marginalized because people assume Alabama’s great defenses are due to Saaban. If he comes to UGA and resurrects the defense with an offensive minded HC, then that gives him tremendous credibility for a head coaching job soon.
3. Saban is a diffcult person to work for (and that’s putting it mildly).
