In the end, Dogs probably got what they deserved

Mark Richt had his players pumped up for the Georgia Tech game. Can he do the same in Shreveport?

Mark Richt had the Dogs motivated at Georgia Tech. But will they be up for Independence Bowl?

A 7-5 record, a defense coached by mostly grad assistants and round-trip airfare to Shreveport wasn’t the way Georgia planned to go into the bowl season this year. But welcome to the season’s final reality check.

Despite closing out the regular season with an upset win over Georgia Tech, the Bulldogs did not receive any status upgrade from bowl officials. So much for the one-week high. The Dogs will finish the year in the Independence Bowl against Texas A&M Dec. 28.

Maybe you believe Georgia got jobbed and deserved better. Not so.

It’s important to remember that bowls are business enterprises, as I wrote in a blog last week, when Shreveport looked like the probable destination. The Dogs made huge gains in bragging rights with the victory over Tech. They succeeded in dropping the Jackets a few notches in the polls. But that’s about it. What happened in that game doesn’t change what happened against Florida, Tennessee or certainly Kentucky. It doesn’t change perceptions.

Bowls care about two things: 1) Records. 2) Perceptions. And really more No. 2. The second is what fuels ticket sales and revenue and stories and happy sponsors. The Dogs were not considered nearly as attractive a 7-5 team as Auburn or Tennessee for good reason. Neither was expected to do much this season but both recorded significant victories with first-year coaches and excited their respected fan bases. Those fans will travel well.

Georgia is coming off a season widely viewed as disappointing, to say the least. Coach Mark Richt just fired three defensive assistant coaches, including coordinator Willie Martinez. The defense will be coached in the bowl in part by grad assistants. The Dogs don’t shape up as a marketing dream. Realistically, this was going to be a hard sale for the Chick-fil-A, Outback and even Music City bowls. Auburn, Tennessee and, yes, Kentucky — which is headed to the Music City — were considered more attractive options.

Is there something to be gained by going to Shreveport? Absolutely. First, the seniors get a final game, even if it’s not the destination they would have preferred. Second, the remaining players get a few weeks of practice and one more game, with a chance to close out the season on a relative high note before next year.

Richt’s challenge will be making sure his players are motivated for a game that otherwise doesn’t have any ramifications. This is when things like character, discipline and resolve come into play. Obviously, another game couldn’t hurt.

This game certainly is no exclamation point. It’s not even a period. Lets hope it’s a comma for that springboard into a seccessful 2010 campaign.

It’s about the best UGA could hope after this season.

Oh well, at least they again proved what a joke the ACC is.

Shultzy, I have to agree with you, they got what they deserved. I am also predicting a Dawg loss in the bowl game, I just dont see our team or our players getting up for Shreveport. And really, would a loss even matter? We’ll see if the ship gets righted by next season. CMR has his work cut out for him.

But we still beat Tech. Something to hang our hats on.

Sometimes you’ve gotta hit rock bottom (Shreveport) before things get better.
For me, it says more that 7 or 8 wins and a bowl is considered rock bottom.
Because of CMR and his successes, more is expected.
You can’t keep a good dawg down for long, and the rest of the nation knows it.

Hey Tech Fans, in case you didnt notice, there were still PLENTY of seats left in Tampa last night! Not even 4 free hot dogs could fill it up. What a joke. No wonder why you cant settle on one city for your conference championship. NO CITY WANTS YOUR SORRY TRAVELLING ARSES BACK!

You really think we care about the bowl game? Go make your money, YOUR PROGRAM NEEDS IT! But in the end, what does an Orange bowl win get you? Nothing. Congrats on being champions of a league that WILL ALWAYS BE second rate to the SEC. BTW, I would take my guns with me to Miami, just as dangerous down there as North Avenue these days! Bwhahaha!

Spot on. I grew up in ATL and went to Furman because I couldn’t get a swimming scholarship to UGA and FSU (my favorite teams growing up and still root for them – not a great year and the parallels are almost weird).

Out here now on the west coast and the Independence Bowl is almost as irrelevant as the Emerald Bowl out here in the Bay Area, but much more to do of course.

UGA deserves what it got because of the complete resume from start to finish. Hopefully, they will practice hard and use this game as a springboard for 2010 and let these young studs we saw the last few games continue to get better.

The game yesterday did not surprise me – Gators just plain and simple were not as explosive as last year with the losses of Harvin and such and their defense (which carries them ALL year, not Tebow), got out schemed and outcoached along with that #9 falling asleep in a drunken stupor (didn’t help).

UGA needs to go out there and aggressively pay up for some young defensive coaches and special teams coaches – Nebraska will be doing the same on the offensive end as well.

UGA isn’t that far away – talent is there, coaching needed a big upgrade and I hope they can attract the coaching talent in what should at the least be a top 15 program every year.

Schultz is right- they got what they deserved…or at least Richt got what he deserved. Why has it taken 2 YEARS to make changes to the defensive staff? And he shouldn’t have stopped there. The win over Tech was big, but obviously not enough to redeem ourselves in anyone’s eyes outside of the State of Georgia. Next year won’t be great, either.

The Clarke County Chronicle came out today. Its published only during
football season. The national rankings are:

1. UGA
2. UGA
3. Alabama
4. Florida
5-13: The other southeastern conference teams

The Chronicle reported that this is the 19th straight season that UGA
has won the national championship. The publishers commented ” Tis a pity that UGA VII isn’t around to see this “. The Chronicle went on to
state that ” UGA’s football superiority is based upon having a top 10 recuiting class for the past 30 years and our hedges. The new indoor
practice stadium is designed to continue this great heritage” Also announced is that tickets will sold to alums with heavy wallets for the practices.

Laugh all you want all you Northside Insect fans. As for the money, the SEC splits the money among ALL teams in the league. TV viewership will probably be about the same for your bowl and Georgia’s. Your only viewers will be in GA and Iowa. The final thing is that even though we lost the majority of our offense in the first 50 something picks of the NFL draft, we were still able to beat Tech.
